Abstract:
AbstractThe memory of the foreign involvement in the Taiping war lasted long after the fall of the Taiping capital at Nanjing in 1864. The events were commemorated by various actors, Chinese and foreign, from the end of the war until the end of the treaty-port century in 1943 when the right to extraterritoriality was abrogated. This article explores the commemorations of the foreign role through three media: the issuing of medals to foreign fighters, the building of memorials to the foreign dead, and the writing of histories of the events. Across these media, different interest groups used the foreign interventions as a proxy for continuing debates about the role of foreigners in China and about China's place in the world. More broadly, the commemorations of the role of foreign fighters in the Taiping war is a case study in the transnational politics of memory. The memories of the war were contested or commemorated not just by states, but also by individuals and groups whose views often diverged from those of their government. By tracing how memories of the war were remembered and forgotten, we can trace the insecurities of different interest groups over time and their perceived power relative to each other.

Abstract:
Although it would be absurd to compare the 2016 Brexit referendum and whatever happened in its aftermath to the tragedy of the Great War, surprising as it may seem, the two have something in common. This is so because the 1914–1918 period triggered a flood of poetry, written not only by established literary figures, but also by thousands of civilians who found it a means of expressing their emotions. By the same token, the post-referendum years produced a poetic response on the part of ordinary citizens. This article tries to take a closer look at how once again British citizens turn to poetry to voice their fears and frustration.

Abstract:
Abstract Fluid flow inside a supersonic nozzle with a rectangular cross-section induces secondary flow due to the shape of the upper wall curvature. The secondary flow forms longitudinal vortices near the wall of the nozzle corner which destabilizes the nozzle outlet flow due to the early transition of the flow from laminar to turbulent. It is known that non-equilibrium homogeneous condensation occurs in a supersonic rectangular nozzle due to the rapid expansion of the condensable fluid with large latent heat such as water vapor. Homogeneous condensation takes place through the formation of water nuclei from its vapor when foreign nuclei are absent in the flow. The irreversibility of the non-equilibrium condensation process causes loss in flow transportation energy in the form of total pressure loss. Although numerous researches have been conducted about the effect of non-equilibrium condensation process in supersonic nozzles, however, the interactions between nozzle shape, non-equilibrium condensation, and longitudinal vortices have not been studied convincingly. Therefore, numerical simulations have been carried out for two supersonic three-dimensional rectangular nozzles in order to understand the effect of nozzle shape and non-equilibrium condensation on the longitudinal vortices at the nozzle corner. Furthermore, total pressure distribution in the nozzle was analysed to understand the effect of degree of supersaturation and expansion rate on the total pressure loss. In this research, characteristics of simulated flow fields including total pressure loss were in good agreement with the published literature.

To continue the legal theme set by the cover photo contest, I am often called on by colleagues to teach strategies for finding legal resources in library instruction sessions. Legal databases and legal materials are often perceived as foreign and overwhelming to undergraduate students as compared to other scholarly resources. Teaching legal materials also often includes having to give a brief overview of the legal system so students understand what types of materials are available to them. When demonstrating how to find legal materials I demonstrate case law relevant to the curriculum in the class, but I find that an active learning session helps reengage the students who are needing a break. I have a collection of “fun laws” for students to find and briefly read so that I know they have learned basic searching techniques. I break down these session to search for case law by citation and by case names.

Abstract:
Authors analyze efficiency of application antiseptics of a miramistin in prevention of infectious complications in case of repeated intravitreal injections of VEGF inhibitor Ranibizumab in 156 patients with the age related macular de-generation. 0,01% solution of antiseptic Miramistin (Okomistin®) was instillated 4 times per day two days before operation to all patients for the purpose of infection prevention. Just before the operation (60 and 30 minutes before) and right after it instillations of antiseptic continued within a week after intravitreal injection. During the operation in the conditions of the operating room with keeping of all rules of aseptic, three minutes prior to operation the surgery field and the conjunctival cavity of the patient were twice processed by 5% povidone-iodine solution (Betadine). The results analysis showed no expressed signs of irritation of the eyes connected to miramistin treatment preceding the operation. In the postoperative period all patients endured antiseptics well. Within a week of applications there were no complaints about pain, burning, foreign body sensation or hazy vision after the medicine instillation, and biomicroscopic research revealed no signs of inflammatory injection of conjunctiva or sclera, no cornea epitheliopathy, there was no cellular response in moisture of the anterior chamber and vitreous body. Thus, the authors state that antiseptics Okomistin® as an additional measure of prevention of infectious complications in case of intravitreal injection provide high level antimicrobic protection with no risk of development of microbial resistance.

Abstract:
The solution of the communication problem in the Arctic, as well as in the tundra, in the taiga, in the forest, in the sea, in the fields is possible only with the use of mobile satellite communication systems. FSUE "Space Communications" (Moscow) has a constantly expanding group of satellites. For reliable communication in the Arctic and Northern latitudes, in addition to geostationary satellites, satellites moving along high-orbit trajectories were launched. To switch from one satellite to the other included in the subscriber's visibility area, it is necessary to use antenna arrays. The problem is that currently there are no mobile terminals for high-speed satellite communication, and the cost of foreign analogues prevents their widespread use (up to 50 thousand dollars). Typically, a phased array radar is used to track thousands of corner points to track hundreds of targets. Such requirements can only be met by scanning the beam in space for a microsecond. It is clear, that electronic beam control is necessary since it is not possible to mechanically rotate the antenna. Only some of the above problems will be touched upon in this article. An electronic model of the antenna array and its mathematical model is presented

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the phenomenon of eponyms derived from scientists’ names through bibliographic analysis of literature. Materials and methods. The following research methods were used: dialectical, historical and chronological, bibliographic and descriptive, analytical. Results and discussion. It would be difficult to name the field of medicine in which there would be no eponyms. Most eponyms are still used in medicine. An eponym (Greek: ἐπώνῠμος, lit. "the one who gave the name") is an outstanding person or hero after whom an object was named. In science, an eponym is a natural linguistic compound of a scientist and his/her discovery in scientific and historical context. In anatomy, histology, embryology, cytology eponyms have been constantly used for a long time. Knowing them is essential for a certified doctor, teacher and scientist from a professional point of view. The use of eponyms contributes to professional development and raises the intellectual level of a medical worker. In anatomy, eponyms are increasingly found in various publications and textbooks on clinical anatomy. They are used in foreign publications and textbooks as well as in clinical practice. This article contains eponyms related to the human nervous system anatomy. The reason is that during practical classes and exams, many students face difficulties in learning and memorizing terms that are found in the literature. Ammon's horn is a part of the hippocampus that forms a longitudinal bulge on the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle. Bekhterev's nucleus is the superior cerebellar nucleus, which is located in the lateral corner of the fossa rhomboid; its neurons switch the fibers of the anterior part of the vestibulocochlear nerve. Betz cell is a large pyramidal neuron of the inner pyramidal layer of the cerebral cortex, the axons of which form the main part of the corticospinal (pyramidal) pathways. Sylvian aqueduct, aquaeductus cerebri, is a narrow channel in the midbrain connecting the third and fourth ventricles and containing cerebrospinal fluid. Flechsig’s tract is the posterior spinocerebellar tract (tractus spinocerebellaris posterior), which runs in the posterior part of the lateral funiculus of the spinal cord. Forel decussation is the ventral intersection of the fibers of the rubrospinal pathway in the lining of the midbrain (decussatio tegmentalis encephali ventralis). Meynert's decussation is dorsal intersection of the tegmentum in the midbrain. Schwalbe's nucleus is medial median nucleus (nucleus vestibularis medialis) of the VIII pair of cranial nerves. Conclusion. Thus, the study of eponyms allows us to preserve the names of scientists who have made a significant contribution to science. Furthermore, eponyms simplify memorizing of the material when studying the human nervous system anatomy and enriches our knowledge of medical science history

Abstract:
Basaltic reservoirs have produced hydrocarbon from Yurihara Field in Japan, Quiko Depression in China, and Padra Field of Cambay Basin and Western Offshore Basin in India. The availability of fractured, altered, and vesicular basalts contributes to reservoir development in this stratigraphic unit. This study is conducted in the Kutch-Saurashtra Basin, located at the western continental margin of the Indian subcontinent wherein, the Deccan basalt, with a thickness range of 200–2500 m, overlies Mesozoic sediments. The Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments constitute the main source rock in the area. Several wells have been drilled through the entire basalt section, and some are hydrocarbon bearing in basalt. The entire basalt section in the study area has been classified into four major units using gamma-ray logs. These units have been further subdivided into individual flows and correlated all over the basin. Analysis shows that the base of an individual basalt flow is massive, and the top is differentially altered. Crossplot analysis of P-impedance and VP/VS ratio carried out on logs delineates a zone of moderately weathered/altered basalt, which is due to spheroidal weathering and calibrated with sidewall cores. These moderately altered zones between two successive flows of basalt are the probable reservoir facies for hydrocarbon accumulation, provided that there is an overlying seal in the form of massive or completely altered basalt. Three-dimensional seismic data in the area show an alternating reflection pattern in the basalt section due to the alternation of massive and weathered basalt. The seismic signature of basalt in the area is similar to that of a sedimentary sequence in any given area. Continuity of the identified individual flows in seismic scale has been propagated over the entire seismic, and subsequent inversion has facilitated the deciphering of the probable hydrocarbon-bearing locales within basalt.

Abstract:
The direct difference method is used for solving the heat conduction equation, and simulate the solidification process of T-type cast. The effect of the thermal resistance at cast/mold on distribution of temperature and the solidification rate of corner region is studied. The results show that during the solidification process of T-type, the riser region first solidified, followed by the right half, finally the solidified part was around the corner. With the decrease of the thermal resistance at cast/mold, the temperature of the corner area decreased more quickly and the solidification rate increased. In the actual design process, the material with the good thermal conductivity should be selected for the cast mold to accelerate the solidification rate of the corner region, so the solidification rate of the corner and riser region tend towards harmony, which reducing the formation of various types of defects, and the quality and mechanical properties of the casts were improved.

Abstract:
The shingled magnetic recording (SMR) with exchange coupled composite (ECC) media is a feasible method to achieve the areal density of multi-Tera-bit/in2. However, a rounded corner is inevitable due to deviations from the fabrication process of a shingled writer. The rounded corner is modeled and characterized by two parameters: the rounded angle (θ) and the corner length (L). This paper investigates the influence of the rounded corner effect on the field distribution, writing capability, bit error rate (BER), and erase band width (EBW) of SMR. The analysis suggests that an optimized structure of rounded corner can increase the write field gradient and reduce the stray field to avoid adjacent track encroachment. The results show that if the shingled rounded corner writer with θ = 40° and L = 3 nm is elaborately constructed, the write field gradient can attain a peak value of 552 Oe/nm, and the write performance of the recording system can be improved.

Abstract:
In the past century major changes in the study of language learning, and its attendant effects on language instruction, derived from the espousal of behavioral psychology by structural linguistics of the Bloomfieldian persuasion. Did not the founder of this strand of structuralism, who collaborated in the Army language manual for the teaching of Russian under the revealing pseudonym of I. M. Lisnin, declare: “Language learning is overlearning, nothing else is of any use”? Noam Chomsky's (1959) brilliant demonstration of the reductionism of the most extreme form of behaviorism—Skinner's operant conditioning (Review of B. F. Skinner's Verbal Behavior, Language, 35, 26–58)—triggered the demise of the influence of behavioristic views of language acquisition. This demise was accompanied by that of the structural approach to second language teaching associated with such applied linguists as Robert Lado, although it must be acknowledged that the combination of these two theoretical strands did lead to significant changes in foreign language classrooms—for example, the abandonment of grammar translation and a shift of focus from written texts to speech. However, what applied linguists of that generation failed to do was to observe how actual second language learners in both naturalistic and instructed contexts process and reorganize linguistic input, how they intake it, and how they turn it into output in communicative interactions. It was not until the impact of Chomskian-inspired studies of first language acquisition and Pit Corder's (1967) seminal “The significance of learners' errors” (International Review of Applied Linguistics, 5, 161–170) that the second language learner came into focus and that the field of second language acquisition research began to flourish. In this connection, it is noteworthy that bringing to a wider international audience the proceedings of the Neuchâtel colloquia led by Corder served as a catalyst for the launching of SSLA.

Abstract:
We demonstrate corner cloak operations mimicking a corner reflector and hiding objects in a truncated corner. The corner cloak is designed at 18.25 GHz and implemented by nonresonant artificial dielectric sheets stacked onto the bottom hypotenuse. It is shown by the near-field measurements that the measured field distributions for the cloak agree well with those for the original area of the corner reflector as well as those for the numerical prediction. The bistatic radar cross-sections (BRCSs) for the cloak and the original area calculated from the measured field distributions coincide with each other and the cloak operation is quantitatively confirmed. The bandwidth evaluated by the specular scattering angles from the BRCSs shows broadband operation as wide as from 16 to 22 GHz.

Abstract:
The study is devoted to the creation of a dataset of protein structural motifs of the 3β-corner type. The relevance and importance of creating a dataset of 3β-corners is determined by the fact that this structure can be an embryo or a ready-made structural block in the process of protein folding, and can also act as an independent object of research in the field of structural biology. The dataset also contains 3β-corner-like structures that are geometrically similar to 3β-corners. The dataset consists of 45,896 structures. For each motif, its characteristics are presented: the name of the protein in which the 3β-corner is recognized, the method and resolution of the protein structure, the coordinates of localization in the protein, the secondary structure of the amino acid sequence, the gyration radius, the solvent-accessible area, and the composition of the elements of the secondary structure. The dataset will allow a comprehensive study of structures on a large scale and advance the understanding of the features and patterns of their structural organization.

Abstract:
In an effort to contribute to the recent debate around epistemological and methodological anarchism inspired by the thinking of Paul Feyerabend, we reflect on Habermas's pragmatist perspective of social science. We argue that the information systems field instantiates a sort of pluralism that goes beyond the relativistic conclusions of Feyerabend. This is evident through the different traditions of research into business processes and organizational routines. There is a healthy diversity of epistemological and methodological approaches in this research. Accompanying this diversity is an openness to novelty and change. Yet, at the same time, this does not necessitate the abandonment of rigor and a cumulative tradition implied by "anything goes." Anything does not go, and that's a good thing. There is not a singular, hegemonic approach to what constitutes strong information systems research, but neither have we devolved into anarchy.

Abstract:
The research purpose was to provide a biomechanical analysis of penalty corner striking techniques in field hockey. Research problems. 1) To identify the boundary phases of a penalty corner; 2) To determine the mechanism of pressure distribution under the feet; 3) To identify the characteristics of an ideal model of spatial-temporal motion of the projection of the center of pressure on the supporting surface when executing a penalty corner. Methods: literature review, biomechanical analysis with the use of a podometric platform, and mathematical statistics. Results. The results of a biomechanical analysis enabled us to register the parameters of pressure distribution under a foot during a penalty corner, and to identify boundary and spatial-temporal phases. We revealed 3 periods in the movement structure: preparation, implementation, and completion. We revealed 5 movement phases: #1 Preparation, #2 Adjustment to a starting position, #3 Start of a stroke, #4 Stroke, and #5 Completion. We identified the values of pressure under a foot in each of the phases of penalty corner and the bio-mechanism of its change and regulation when during penalty corner execution. Therefore, for each phase, pressure changes under the right (R) and left (L) feet from the percentage of body weight were arranged. The arrangement is as follows: #1 – Preparation (R – 72; L – 28%), #2 Adjustment to a starting position (R – 93; L – 7%), #3 Start of a stroke (R – 17; L – 83%), # 4 Completion of a stroke (R – 16; L – 84%), and # 5 – Stick and body motion after a stroke (R-1: L-99%). We identified the characteristics of the ideal model of spatial-temporal motion of the projection of the center of pressure on the supporting surface when executing a penalty corner. We revealed that each phase took a certain time period during the stroke execution: #1 – Preparation (35%), #2 Adjustment to a starting position (22%), #3 Start of a stroke (26%), #4 Completion of a stroke (4%), and #5 Stick and body motion after a stroke (13%). Conclusion. The research findings can enable coaches and athletes to understand the characteristics of an ideal model of the stroke execution, and to get aware of various tools available for its technical support.

Abstract:
We investigate the quantum geometry of a 2d surface S bounding the Cauchy slices of a 4d gravitational system. We investigate in detail for the first time the boundary symplectic current that naturally arises in the first-order formulation of general relativity in terms of the Ashtekar–Barbero connection. This current is proportional to the simplest quadratic form constructed out of the pull back to S of the triad field. We show that the would-be-gauge degrees of freedo arising from S U ( 2 ) gauge transformations plus diffeomorphisms tangent to the boundary are entirely described by the boundary 2-dimensional symplectic form, and give rise to a representation at each point of S of S L ( 2 , R ) × S U ( 2 ) . Independently of the connection with gravity, this system is very simple and rich at the quantum level, with possible connections with conformal field theory in 2d. A direct application of the quantum theory is modelling of the black horizons in quantum gravity.

Nowadays, English is significantly popular among Algerian generation but not to such an extent to be used in social context. Its use is, however, limited to classroom environment except for those students who are fond of this foreign language and master it with a high level of fluency. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the status of English as second foreign language in Algeria, and how it has been injected within the educational system by taking into consideration social and cultural aspects. Education is a process and like other processes, it is exposed to several factors, some of which are aid and some others are obstructive. The type of school can be one of these factors that may affect teachers and students: Single-sex or coeducational schools. Algeria is a country that still offers different types of schools that have great impact on pedagogy and on learners’ performance in the EFL context due to social and cultural impacts.

Abstract:
The behavior of pedestrians around the corner of a room or a corridor is one of the most important features in pedestrian evacuating dynamics. In order to study this in detail, an existing potential field model is modified to capture the pedestrian dynamic around corner by introducing a local density parameter. The local density parameter of a cell is defined as the pedestrian occupancy of the surrounding eight neighbors. Simulations are carried out to study pedestrian evacuation in rooms with corners formed by internal obstacles and walls. The simulation results show that the new model can reproduce the empirical pedestrian dynamics around corner. Pedestrians prefer to walk to lower pedestrian density area although the route may be a little longer. It is also shown that the total evacuation time could be reduced for the evacuation corridor is fully utilized.

The flow field structure of different cavity aft wall slope angle (16°,30° and 90°) , different fore aft wall height ratio (1 and 2) and different length depth ratio (3 and 5) are analyzed. The conclusions are as follows: As cavity aft wall slope angle decreases, the compression wave formed at cavity leading separation corner shifts into expansion wave, the shear layer moves into cavity gradually; As cavity fore aft wall height ratio increases from one to two, the expansion wave formed at cavity leading separation corner strengthens and there is no compression wave formed at;As cavity length depth ratio increases from three to five, the compression or expansion wave formed at cavity leading separation corner weakens, cavity bottom wall pressure tends to be constant and aft wall pressure rises.

Abstract:
In this paper, the characteristics of the stress field near a corner of jointed dissimilar materials are studied as a plane problem. It is found that the order of singularity is dependent not only on the elastic constants of materials and the local geometry of corner, but also on the deformation mode. The dependence of the order of singularity was established for the case of mode I and the case of mode II. An explicit closed-form expression is given for the singular stress field at the close vicinity of the corner, in which the stress field is expressed as a sum of the symmetric state with a stress singularity of 1/r1-λ1 and the skew symmetric state with a stress singularity of 1/r1-λ2. When both λ1 and λ2 are real the singular stress field around the point singularity is defined in terms of two constants K1, λ1, K11, λ2, as in the case of crack problems.

Abstract:
Heidegger's philosophy has long been one of the core references for information systems (IS) researchers, often drawing upon one of two distinct perspectives he employed in his writings. The first of these perspectives is found in Heidegger's work on presence, and the second in his work on relations. We refer to these two as his presence perspective and his relation perspective. The presence perspective builds on ideas developed in early sections of his major work, Being and Time (1927:1996), contrasting the presence of being-in-the-world with that of readiness-at-hand. The relation perspective builds on ideas developed in later sections of Being and Time, elaborating on the concept of being-with [Mitsein]. We discuss the ways these two key perspectives in his philosophy are intertwined and reinforce each other when we consider them together, and how they amplify and extend each other's scope of effect in human situated practice. We argue that Heidegger's philosophical perspective on human existence is a powerful theoretical lens for understanding both the subjective and the objective poles of our experience of being in the world. It provides an integrated framework for research on both poles that is useful across the IS field.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the characteristics of elastic-plastic deformation and stress fields at the intersection of a crack front and the free surface of a three-dimensional body, referred to as corner fields. Design/methodology/approach The structures of elastic-plastic corner deformation field were assessed experimentally by looking at the corner border displacement and strain fields on the surface of a compact tension (CT) specimen using digital image correlation method. For assessment and verification purposes, the results were compared with the fields predicted through finite element analysis. The latter method was used further to assess the corner stress field. Findings The characteristics of displacement, strain and stress fields in the vicinity of a corner vertex in a finite geometry CT specimen in a strain hardening condition are independent of load and geometry. One of the distinctive features that becomes evident in this study is that the stress state at the corner vertex at θ=0° is a simple uniaxial tension. Originality/value This paper provides some insights on the structure of elastic-plastic corner fields that could optimistically be served as a fundamental framework towards the development of analytical solutions for elastic-plastic corner fields.

Abstract:
The growth behavior of a naturally initiated corner crack under a uniform residual stress field is investigated in this study. A convenient method is proposed to induce and evaluate the uniform residual stress field for a beam-type specimen. Fatigue tests are conducted with a rotary bending fatigue machine to investigate the growth of the corner crack. For this reason, a cylindrical specimen, which is typically used for rotating bending tests, is modified into a beam specimen. The corner crack growth behavior under residual stress is evaluated based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and compared with long through crack data. The test results verify that the corner crack growth under residual stress can be effectively evaluated by LEFM and estimated using long crack data.

Abstract:
AbstractThe flow structure and turbulence in an open cavity shear layer has been investigated experimentally at a Reynolds number of$4. 0\times 1{0}^{4} $, with an emphasis on interactions of the unsteady pressure field with the cavity corners. A large database of time-resolved two-dimensional PIV measurements has been used to obtain the velocity distributions and calculate the pressure by spatially integrating the material acceleration at a series of sample areas covering the entire shear layer and the flow surrounding the corners. Conditional sampling, low-pass filtering and time correlations among variables enable us to elucidate several processes, which have distinctly different frequency ranges, that dominate the shear layer interactions with the corners. Kelvin–Helmholtz shear layer eddies have the expected Strouhal number range of 0.5–3.2. Their interactions with the trailing corner introduce two sources of vorticity fluctuations above the corner. The first is caused by the expected advection of remnants of the shear layer eddies. The second source involves fluctuations in local viscous vorticity flux away from the wall caused by periodic variations in the streamwise pressure gradients. This local production peaks when the shear layer vortices are located away from the corner, creating a lingering region with peak vorticity just above the corner. The associated periodic pressure minima there are lower than any other point in the entire flow field, making the region above the corner most prone to cavitation inception. Flapping of the shear layer and boundary layer upstream of the leading corner occurs at very low Strouhal numbers of ∼0.05, affecting all the flow and turbulence quantities around both corners. Time-dependent correlations of the shear layer elevation show that the flapping starts in the boundary layer upstream of the leading corner and propagates downstream at the free stream speed. Near the trailing corner, when the shear layer elevation is low, the stagnation pressure in front of the wall, the downward jetting flow along this wall, the fraction of shear layer vorticity entrained back into the cavity, and the magnitude of the pressure minimum above the corner are higher than those measured when the shear layer is high. However, the variations in downward jetting decay rapidly with increasing distance from the trailing corner, indicating that it does not play a direct role in a feedback mechanism that sustains the flapping. There is also low correlation between the boundary/shear layer elevation and the returning flow along the upstream vertical wall, providing little evidence that this returning flow affects the flapping directly. However, the characteristic period of flapping, ∼0.6 s, is consistent with recirculation time of the fluid within the cavity away from boundaries. The high negative correlations of shear/boundary layer elevation with the streamwise pressure gradient above the leading corner introduce a plausible mechanism that sustains the flapping: when the shear layer is low, the boundary layer is subjected to high adverse streamwise pressure gradients that force it to widen, and when the shear layer is high, the pressure gradients decrease, allowing the boundary layer to thin down. Flow mechanisms that would cause the flapping-induced pressure changes, and their relations to the flow within the cavity are discussed.

Abstract:
Field weeds identification is challenging for precision spraying, i.e., the automation identification of the weeds from the crops. For rapidly obtaining weed distribution in field, this study developed a weed density detection method based on absolute feature corner point (AFCP) algorithm for the first time. For optimizing the AFCP algorithm, image preprocessing was firstly performed through a sub-module processing capable of segmenting and optimizing the field images. The AFCP algorithm improved Harris corner to extract corners of single crop and weed and then sub-absolute corner classifier as well as absolute corner classifier were proposed for absolute corners detection of crop rows. Then, the AFCP algorithm merged absolute corners to identify crop and weed position information. Meanwhile, the weed distribution was obtained based on two weed density parameters (weed pressure and cluster rate). At last, the AFCP algorithm was validated based on the images that were obtained using one typical digital camera mounted on the tractor in field. The results showed that the proposed weed detection method manifested well given its ability to process an image of 2748 × 576 pixels using 782 ms as well as its accuracy in identifying weeds reaching 90.3%. Such results indicated that the weed detection method based on AFCP algorithm met the requirements of practical weed management in field, including the real-time images computation processing and accuracy, which provided the theoretical base for the precision spraying operations.

Geometry is an essential component of mathematics instruction. “Geometry helps us represent and describe in an orderly manner the world in which we live” (NCTM 1989, 48). Research in the field of early childhood mathematics education (Fuys and Liebov 1993; Del Grande 1985; Fruedenthal 1973) confirms that children are naturally intrigued by, and motivated to learn more about, the geometry that defines their worlds. Although it is important to provide a rich geometry program in the primary grades, research reveals that the little attention given to geometry is typically for exposure purposes (Bruni and Seidenstein 1990; Porter 1989). Therefore, any classroom time devoted to geometry is precious.

Abstract:
The corner defects in the casting slab greatly influence the product quality. These defects may extend during the heating and rolling process and even result in the discarding of the rolled plate as scrap. A corner cleaning equipment based on the scarfing machine is proposed to eliminate the defects in slab corners for producing high-quality steel. Unlike the flat surface scarfing process, the flame jet and the shape of the molten pool have an essential impact on the effectiveness of the flame cleaning in the corner of the casting slab. A three-dimensional fully coupled model for the flame cleaning nozzle is developed to simulate the flow pattern of the flame jet, Oxygen concentration distribution, and temperature field in the corner of the slab. The simulated flame jet flow field and temperature results agreed well with the factory trial results. Additionally, a three-dimensional thermal model for simulation of the molten pool formed by flame cleaning in the corner of the casting slab has also been developed. For the sake of simplicity, the 2D elliptic and 3D Gauss heat source models are used to simulate the flame heating on the upper and right surfaces of the slab corner and the reaction heating between oxygen and heated iron along the corner, respectively. The simulation results show that the length is 58.1 mm and 57.9 mm on both sides and the corner melting depth is 29.9 mm. The error is 7.04%. The numerical simulation results showed good agreement with the factory trial results, indicating that the proposed models of the flame jet and the heat sources analysis are feasible to study the flame cleaning process of the slab corner, it provides the scientific theoretical basis for the design and practical application of corner scarfing machine.
