Abstract:

Abstract:
Altered expression of corin, a cardiac transmembrane serine protease, has been linked to dilated and ischemic cardiomyopathy. However, the potential role of corin in myocardial infarction (MI) is lacking. This study examined the outcomes of MI in wild-type vs. cardiac-specific overexpressed corin transgenic (Corin-Tg) mice during pre-MI, early phase (3, 24, 72 h), and late phase (1, 4 weeks) post-MI. Corin overexpression significantly reduced cardiac cell apoptosis (p < 0.001), infarct size (p < 0.001), and inhibited cleavage of procaspases 3, 9, and 8 (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01), as well as altered the expression of Bcl2 family proteins, Bcl-xl, Bcl2 and Bak (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001) at 24 h post-MI. Overexpressed cardiac corin also significantly modulated heart function (ejection fraction, p < 0.0001), lung congestion (lung weight to body weight ratio, p < 0.0001), and systemic extracellular water (edema, p < 0.05) during late phase post-MI. Overall, cardiac corin overexpression significantly reduced apoptosis, infarct size, and modulated cardiac expression of key members of the apoptotic pathway in early phase post-MI; and led to significant improvement in heart function and reduced congestion in late phase post-MI. These findings suggest that corin may be a useful target to protect the heart from ischemic injury and subsequent post-infarction remodeling.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Differences in the diversity of fish species between granite and limestone reefs, as well as high- and low-relief limestone reefs, were investigated at Hamelin Bay, south-western Australia. It was found that there were significant differences in the presence and abundance of fish species between granite reefs and limestone reefs. Granite reefs were characterized by greater numbers of Coris auricularis (western king wrasse) and Parma mccullochi (common scalyfin), whereas limestone reefs had greater numbers of the fish species Odax cyanomelas (herring cale), Pempheris klunzingeri (rough bullseye) and Kyphosus sydneyanus (common buffalo bream). A significant difference in fish diversity was also found between high-relief and low-relief limestone reefs in the same area. More species were found on the high-relief reefs than low-relief reefs. Complementing differences in fish assemblages, significant differences were found in algal assemblages from the different habitats. This was mainly owing to a dominance of Ecklonia radiata on low-relief limestone reefs. Ecklonia radiata was less dominant on granite reefs and on high-relief limestone reefs, where there was a lower overall algal biomass and a higher total number of species.

Abstract:
Art—or at least the kind we most like to write about—is almost always political, whether it is inter/national or personal; and though TDR has already taken this up in its “War and Other Bad Shit” issue, the topic remains center stage. In his review of Dutch theatre troupe Dood Paard's medEia, Jacob Gallagher-Ross notes the emergence of “a new age of the chorus” in which spectatorship becomes inseparable from paralyzed witnessing and Medea's tragedy is reconceived as a metaphor for the West's tragic relations with the East. Laurietz Seda explores Guillermo Gómez-Peña's recent performance/installation Mapa/Corpo 2: Interactive Rituals for the New Millennium, a fluid piece that, like much of the artist's recent work, addresses the xenophobia and “war on difference” that underlies the US's ongoing War on Terror. The Burmese stand-up trio the Moustache Brothers is the subject of Xan Colman and Tamara Searle's personal account of how performance can be both art and resistance in a contradictory and charged political regime.

Abstract:
The objective of the work reported in this thesis was to design and implement an ecological effects environmental monitoring program which would: 1) Collect baseline biological information on sessile epibiotic fouling communities from an area adjacent to a petroleum refinery located on Corio Bay, Victoria, to allow comparison with results of future monitoring for the assessment of long term temporal water quality trends. 2) Detect and — if possible - estimate the magnitude of any influence on epibiotic fouling communities within the Corio Bay marine ecosystem attributable to operations at the Shell Petroleum Refinery. 3) Investigate the extent of thermal stratification and rate of dispersal of the petroleum refinery main cooling-water outfall plume (discharging up to 350,000 tonnes of warmed seawater per day), and its effect on epibiotic communities within the EPA-defined mixing zone. A major component of the work undertaken was the design and development of artificial-substrate biological sampling stations suitable for use under the conditions prevailing in Corio Bay, and the development of appropriate quantitative underwater photographic sampling techniques to fulfil the experimental criteria outlined above. Experimental and other constraints imposed on the design of the stations precluded the simple suspension of frames from jetties or pylons, a technique widely used in previous work of this type. Artificial substrate panels were deployed along three radial transects centred within and extending beyond the petroleum refinery main cooling-water mixing zone. Identical substrate panels were deployed at a number of control sites located throughout Corio Bay, each chosen for differences in their degree of exposure to such factors as water movement, depth, shipping traffic and/or comparable industrial activity. The rate of colonisation (space utilisation) and the development of epibiotic fouling communities on artificial substrate panels was monitored over two twelve-month sampling periods using quantitative underwater photographic sampling techniques. Sampling was conducted at 4-8 week intervals with the rate of panel colonisation and community structure determined via coverage measurements. Various species of marine algae, polychaete tubeworms, hydroids, barnacles, simple and colonial ascidians, sponges, bivalve molluscs and encrusting bryozoans were all detected growing on panels. Communities which established on panels within the cooling-water mixing-zone and those at control sites were compared using statistical procedures including agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis. A photographic sample archive has been established to allow comparison with similar future studies.

The objective os this research is to show that there is an intrinsic, unequivocal and specific communication between body and environment. When silences and blockages occur it is because cognition and perceptual processes are interrupted. For this reason, we will study Communication Theory related to the Bodymidia concept (Katz and Greiner, 2001 and 2003), concepts developed by cognitive scientist referring to perception, conscience and body image (e.g: Damásio 2000, Ramachandran 2001) and the Rolfing procedures. Rolfing is a postural and moviment re-educational system that seeks to produce functional changes in the muscle skeleton system, changes in the body-processed sensations and perceptions and alterations in the environment relationship. Our hypothesis is that Rolfing may work as a restorative element of the blocked communication between body and environment.

Abstract:
There are currently various means of electronic payments, which have been increasingly used worldwide. With the evolution of technology and mobile devices over the last decade, new trends in payment systems have emerged, namely the realization of mobile payments using mobile phones or smartphones. The NFC payment system, which has been increasingly asserting itself in this paradigm, is a system that allows performing mobile payments by proximity and securely using an equipped smartphone with the proper technology. However, it is necessary that the user approaches the mobile device to the POS terminal throughout the whole payment process, something that can be uncomfortable or inconvenient in certain situations. The BCC payment system, developed in this Master’s dissertation project, seeks to offer a new solution in the framework of mobile payment systems. It uses the human body as a communication medium, making use of technology that allows the transmission and reception of information through capa-itive coupling to the human body. Due to the communication confinement in the human body, this system increases the security of a payment and eliminates the hassle and inconveniences of the NFC payment system.

Abstract:
CORFO was one of the first national development banks in Latin America, and played a decisive role in Chile’s national development strategy. In recent decades, its relative scale has diminished significantly. Its financial support currently represents only 1% of Chile’s GDP and has switched from giving credit directly to becoming a second-tier institution whose main instruments are not loans but guarantees. Its support for strategic sectors has been decisive to incentivize innovative, value-added activities, such as the Start-Up programme or renewable energy projects. Nonetheless, its limited scale severely reduces its potential ability to transform Chile’s economy or deploy a countercyclical role in a crisis scenario. This study suggests that CORFO could take advantage of Chile’s mature capital market, by raising additional funds through bond issues.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a historiography of a select group of Brazilian women's independent, alternative film and video production during the 1980s, which contributed to new definitions of citizenship during the last years of the dictatorship and the transition toward democracy. Concomitant to the goal to define new political and cultural identities, Brazilian women's alternative media at the time sought to reclaim and expand citizenship rights by intervening in understandings of brasilidade (Brazilian cultural identity) and shaping debates surrounding issues such as abortion and women's access to healthcare. The chapter then examines works by film and video maker Eunice Gutman, the Lilith Video Collective—a group of three women who dedicated themselves to bringing greater awareness to women's issues as the Brazilian constitution was being rewritten, and the feminist nongovernmental organization SOS-Corpo.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how revolutionary enthusiasms, experimental magazines, and translation fueled inter-American relations in the 1960s on the countercultural left. Previous critics note the Boom, but most US accounts of the period’s poetry center on the intra-national polarities (“margin versus mainstream” or “raw versus cooked”) inflamed by Donald Allen’s The New American Poetry (1960). The chapter instead describes a larger formation called “the new inter-American poetry,” recovering dialogues best emblematized by the hemispheric little magazine El Corno Emplumado, and the reciprocations engendered between the works of rebellious Beats and revolutionary Cuban barbudos, Paul Blackburn and Julio Cortázar, Clayton Eshleman and Javier Heraud, Pablo Neruda among his English translators, and others. These exchanges were not without their blind spots, and the chapter concludes by comparing the communities imagined by Frank O’Hara’s Lunch Poems (1964) to poems by contemporaneous visitors to Manhattan such as Mario Benedetti (Uruguay) and Alcides Iznaga (Cuba).

Abstract:
Dancing Women: Choreographing Corporeal Histories of Hindi Cinema, an ambitious study of two of South Asia’s most popular cultural forms—cinema and dance—historicizes and theorizes the material and cultural production of film dance, a staple attraction of popular Hindi cinema. It explores how the dynamic figurations of the body wrought by cinematic dance forms from the 1930s to the 1990s produce unique constructions of gender, stardom, and spectacle. By charting discursive shifts through figurations of dancer-actresses, their publicly performed movements, private training, and the cinematic and extra-diegetic narratives woven around their dancing bodies, the book considers the “women’s question” via new mobilities corpo-realized by dancing women. Some of the central figures animating this corporeal history are Azurie, Sadhona Bose, Vyjayanthimala, Helen, Waheeda Rehman, Madhuri Dixit, and Saroj Khan, whose performance histories fold and intersect with those of other dancing women, including devadasis and tawaifs, Eurasian actresses, oriental dancers, vamps, choreographers, and backup dancers. Through a material history of the labor of producing on-screen dance, theoretical frameworks that emphasize collaboration, such as the “choreomusicking body” and “dance musicalization,” aesthetic approaches to embodiment drawing on treatises like the Natya Sastra and the Abhinaya Darpana, and formal analyses of cine-choreographic “techno-spectacles,” Dancing Women offers a variegated, textured history of cinema, dance, and music. Tracing the gestural genealogies of film dance produces a very different narrative of Bombay cinema, and indeed of South Asian cultural modernities, by way of a corporeal history co-choreographed by a network of remarkable dancing women.

Abstract:
The novel as a great socio-literary institution, which projects the ideals of bourgeois class, becomes the maximum expression of modernity from the 18th century on. The genre, characterized by its malleability and ambivalence, reflects an individualistic and innovative orientation. In this sense, the novels of characters originate subtypes, as the Bildungsroman, whose paradigmatic model would be Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship (1795), by the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Since the novel is a genre in constant becoming, the concept of Bildungsroman undergoes problematizations and revisions and, today, it is possible to consider a novel of formation which includes ethnic, racial and sexual minorities. Some important steps in male Bildungsroman, such as fulfillment in love from several experiences and the discovery of a professional vocation and a philosophy of life, are still problematic in female novels of formation along the 20th century, due to the small space dedicated to woman in society, making her formative experiences more subjective, and culminating, in most cases, in the failed end of characters who cannot escape the webs of social oppresion. In this book I try to show that there is a process of subjectification of the female characters, in which the formative experiences occur through spatial and identity displacements, characteristic of modern times. Thus in the novels of formation from the 21th century – such as Pérolas Absolutas (2003), by Heloísa Seixas, Algum Lugar (2009), by Paloma Vidal, and Azul-corvo (2010), by Adriana Lisboa, – amid globalization and the dismantling of great utopias and truths, they experience other conflicts and problems resulting from the fluidity of human relations in modern times.

Abstract:
Bab Tut of the medina of Tetouan (Morocco): study and data for its conservationAt the beginning of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco (1912-1956) the medina of Tetouan, with its walls and gates, was perceived as a fundamental part of the traditional city that was to be conserved. It is interesting to consider, in this sense, the concern that since the war of Tetuan (1859) was to obtain an adequate graphic representation of this architecture. Among the Maps of the Spanish Army Geographical Service are the first drawing that were made (scale 1:100) of the gates of the medina. They are signed by Francisco Gómez Jordana; Alejo Corso and Eduardo Álvarez in 1888. The purpose of this study is to publish the Bab Tut survey and its description. Thanks to this drawing we can know the exact status of the gate before the Spanish occupation and establish a documentary base that facilitates the recovery of this defensive heritage of the city of Tetouan.
