Abstract:
An artistic, popular, and critical success, the film Before the Rain (1994), written and directed by Macedonian-American Milcho Manchevski, has been the subject of much critical work largely dominated by issues related to the setting of the story (early 1990s Balkans) and also by the concepts of seeing, watching, and being watched, and the relation of all this with the Balkan discourses. Gordana P. Crnković argues for moving away from this framework in order to explore the film's aesthetic achievements operating in a different sphere, and specifically the film's creation of the practice of proper listening taken in a more philosophical sense envisioned by Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Gemma Corradi Fiumara. Intertwining close readings of the film's scenes and especially the film's soundscape with these philosophers’ insights, Crnković shows how listening in this film grounds personal ethics and political acts, and how it relates to the spheres of childhood, nature, and one's own inner voice or daimon.

Abstract:
Detecting early symptoms of engine failure is a crucial phase in an engine management system to prevent poor driving performance and experience. This paper proposes a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) engine diagnostics using a low-cost piezo-film sensor, an analysis with improved statistical method and verification by a Support Vector Machine (SVM). The current engine management system is unable to evaluate the performance of each cylinder operation. Eventually, it affects the whole hybrid vehicle system, particularly in the mode of charging and accelerating. This research aims to classify the combustion to monitor the condition of sparking activity of the engine by using the Z-freq statistical method. Piezo-film sensors were mounted on the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) wall of each hybrid vehicle for vibration signal measurements. The engine runs at different speeds, the vibration signals were then recorded and analysed using the Z-freq technique. A machine learning tool referred to as Support Vector Machine was used to verify the classifications made by the Z-freq technique. A significant correlation was found between the voltage signal and calculated Z-freq coefficient value. Moreover, a good pattern was produced within a consistent value of the engine speed. This technique is useful for the hybrid engine to identify different stages of combustion and enable pattern categorisation of the measured parameters. These improved techniques provide strong evidence based on pattern representation and facilitate the investigator to categorise the measured parameters.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Academic administrators play an important role in shaping policies and processes that impact students. As student and faculty demographics in higher education continue to shift, academic administrative ranks need to mirror these changes, yet Latina upper level academic administrators face multiple challenges in moving up the leadership ranks. In order to create change within our educational system, it is important to have an understanding of the experiences of Latinas in upper level academic administration, including the role of culture and gender.

This qualitative interview study examined the experiences of twenty upper level academic administrators at two and four-year institutions across the United States. Four themes emerged from the study. First, the majority of the participants entered administration by chance but stayed within these ranks due to their desire to be change agents. Second, the participants faced multiple challenges, including ethnicity-base discrimination, sexism, microaggressions and self-doubt. Third, despite the challenges, the women accessed internal and external strategies and skills set such as coraje, an internal drive to continue pushing forward, hard work and mestiza consciousness to continue moving forward in their administration role. Finally, participants provided consejos, words of wisdom, such as going into administration being difficult, but doable and not losing one’s authenticity. The study provides recommendations for policy, practice and future research.

Grenier, Andrew T. "Fire Characteristics of Cored Composite Materials for Marine Use." Digital WPI, 2002. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/611.

Full text
Abstract:
A material study was conducted on two types of cored composite materials used in shipbuilding: a GRP/Balsa Cored sandwich and a GRP/PVC Foam Cored sandwich. The two materials were tested in the Cone Calorimeter and the LIFT Apparatus to obtain data on ignitability, heat release rate, mass loss rate, and smoke production. The observed phenomena of delamination, melting and charring of the core materials, and edge effects are discussed in the context of how they affect test results. The ignition data analysis method specified in ASTM E 1321 "Standard Test Method for Determining Material Ignition and Flame Spread Properties" and Janssens' "improved" method of analysis were both used to derive effective material properties of the test materials. These two analysis methods are shown to produce different material property values for critical irradiance for ignition, ignition temperature, and the effective thermal property, $k ho c$. Material properties derived using Janssens' method are shown to be more consistent between the two test materials and the two different test methods; they were also shown to be better predictors of time to ignition when compared to actual test data. Material properties are used as input to Quintiere's fire growth model in order to evaluate their affect on time to flashover predictions in the ISO 9705 Room/Corner test scenario. Recommendations are made for future testing of cored composite materials, ignition data analysis methods, predictive fire growth models, and other work with composite materials. ** This copy contains no figures or appendices **

Hoss, Jennifer Ann. "Rekindling the flame: reconstructing a fire history for Peters Mountain, Giles County, Virginia." 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-1315.

Full text
Abstract:
Beginning in the late 1930s, fire exclusion has drastically altered the vegetation dynamics of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Extremely low fire frequency has allowed for more shade-tolerant species to invade once predominantly open forests and has made it almost impossible for fire-dependent species to establish on a site. One such species is the endangered Peters Mountain mallow (Iliamna corei Sherff.) located on Peters Mountain in The Nature Conservancy s Narrows Preserve in Giles County, Virginia. This paper focuses on the fire history and stand dynamics of Peters Mountain and how fire exclusion has altered the forest composition. The historic fire frequency and successional changes discovered here may provide an insight into management strategies for the mallow. Seventy-nine fire scarred cross-sections were taken and aged to determine fire history dates and frequencies. Three 50x20 meter plots were set up on opposing aspects: northwest and southeast. The aspects were chosen at the direction of The Nature Conservancy personnel. All trees within were identified, cored and aged to determine species composition and the establishment dates of all trees. Fire history analysis revealed a mean fire interval of 2.48 years, a Weibull median fire interval of 2.18 years and a 25 percent scarred class mean fire interval of 12.5 years. Stand dynamic results show that Quercus montana has established on Peters Mountain prior to fire exclusion and remains the dominate species on the landscape. An increased number of fire intolerant species (including Acer rubrum, Sassfras albidum, Nyssa sylvatica) have been establishing on Peters Mountain during the decades of decreased fire frequency, suggesting a shift in forest composition. Frequent fires are suggested for mallow management and oak forest maintenance.

Corrêa, Ana Cristina Coêlho Alves. "Corpus Inscriptionum: Mergulhadores de Corumbau." Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/131594.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate and learn with underwater divers from the Marine Extractive Reserve of Corumbau, located in the Banco de Abrolhos, (Bahia-Brazil); on the practices and transformations of underwater hunting, given the challenges posed by global warming, climate change and environmental disasters that occurred in 2019; namely coral bleaching (Duarte, et al., 2020), and the mysterious spill of crude oil into the environment (Soares, et al., 2020). The filmic component of this work, in addition to being a fundamental tool in the construction of the narrative, intends to communicate about a barely visible reality: the underwater world in its life interactions, observed under the waterline. I call this social mesh that exists between the human and non-human elements the “Coral System”. Thus, coral reefs and the social relationships established between species, become the guiding principle of this approach, aiming to clarify the social interactions of the mesh in their effective ties of support, disturbance, and sustainability. From the ethnographic method, I propose the use of images as a central and articulating tool, to give space to the “crossing of cultural perspectives” (MacDougall 1997), where the composition of the voices created the content. The camera follows the lines of life, in search of the meeting of elements and materials. With this, I intended to generate polyphonic content, through image and voice capture, about the empirical knowledge associated with underwater fishing, and taught through daily practice and observation. To account for the diversity of details and complex intertwined lives and materials related to this ethnography, I propose the use of the coral system, as an observation window, to understand the impact of climate change on the proposed local scale.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, we summarize the ecology and conservation issues affecting greater (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Gunnison (C. minimus) sage-grouse, iconic and obligate species of rangelands in the sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) biome in western North America. Greater sage-grouse are noted for their ability to migrate, whereas Gunnison sage-grouse localize near leks year-round. Seasonal habitats include breeding habitat where males display at communal leks, nesting habitat composed of dense sagebrush and herbaceous plants to conceal nests, mesic summer habitats where broods are reared, and winter habitat, characterized by access to sagebrush for cover and forage. While two-thirds of sage-grouse habitat occurs on public lands, private land conservation is the focus of national groups including the USDA-NRCS Sage-Grouse Initiative. Sage-grouse are a species of great conservation concern due to population declines associated with loss and fragmentation of more than half of the sagebrush biome. Wildlife and land management agencies have been increasingly proactive in monitoring trends in sage-grouse populations (e.g., lek count index), adapting regulations to reduce harvest on declining populations, and in designing and implementing conservation policies such as core areas to conserve sage-grouse habitats and populations. Much of the remaining sagebrush habitat is threatened by altered fire regimes, invasive annual grasses and noxious weeds, encroaching piñon (Pinus edulis and monophylla)-juniper (Juniperus spp.) woodlands, sagebrush conversion, anthropogenic development, and climate change. Several diseases affect sage-grouse, but to date, disease has not been a widespread cause of declines. Proper livestock grazing and limited hunting appear to be sustainable with sage-grouse, whereas improper grazing, increasing free-roaming equid populations, and sagebrush conversion are primary concerns for future conservation. Research has identified additional concerns for sage-grouse including effects from fence collisions, predation from common ravens (Corvus corax), and reduced habitat effectiveness resulting from grouse avoidance of anthropogenic infrastructure. There is a need for future research evaluating sage-grouse habitat restoration practices following improper rangeland management, habitat alteration from invasive species and fire, effects on small and isolated populations, and effects from diseases.

Abstract:
Most of the diverse groups of crustaceans associated with scleractinian and fire corals form symbiotic relationship with their coral hosts. Coral-associated barnacles include species from the orders Acrothoracica and Thoracica. Most of the coral-associated barnacles belong to the family Pyrgomatidae in Thoracica. Within Pyrgomatidae, the subfamily Ceratoconchinae contains mostly extant species and is present from Florida through the Caribbean to Brazilian waters. The subfamily Megatrematinae has lower species diversity and has a cosmopolitan distribution (except the Eastern Pacific). The Pyrgomatinae are the most species-rich subfamily and distributed only in Indo-West Pacific waters. Host usage of pyrgomatinid barnacles varies spatially, probably related to coral host diversity. Copepods are the most common and most abundant coral-associated crustaceans, often associated with scleractinian, gorgonian, and alcyonacean corals. More than 90% of coral-associated copepods are endemic to the Indo-West Pacific. In contrast, only a few species (<10%) have been discovered from the Atlantic due to several historical perturbations reducing the diversity of their coral hosts. The communities of coral-associated copepods thus show dramatic differences between geographic regions, notably between the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans. Brachyurans of the family Cryptochiridae (gall crabs) are obligate associates or parasites, of scleractinian coral hosts in tropical and subtropical seas, being a monophyletic group of only 52 species, from the intertidal to the deep sea (to 512 m) habitats with most (46) recorded in the seas of the tropical Indo-West Pacific and none being cosmopolitan. Atlantic species of Cryptochiridae, apparently not phylogenetically related, display less strict host specificity than their Indo-West Pacific counterparts. Current phylogenetic understandings of the group remain preliminary, while one consistent Indo-West Pacific clade reflects rapid species diversification during the last ~15 million years.

Abstract:
The final chapter follows the decline of the studio system. Toward the late 1940s, political and economic factors such as the rise of television and changes in the tax code, pushed film production away from the studio system and towards a system based more and more on “spot production” or separate deals. Furthermore, the Paramount decision handed down by the Supreme Court ended vertical integration and eroded the power of the major film companies. Changes in labor practices followed, as demonstrated by the career of actors like Gino Corrado and producers like Hal Wallis. As the “stock-company” model ended, and the number of long-term contracts declined, new forces, particularly talent agents such as Lew Wasserman became the power brokers of the new Hollywood.

Abstract:
In late 1803, Beethoven acquired a new piano from the French firm of Sébastien Erard. This piano differed from the one built by Anton Walter that he owned in the late 1790s, most notably in its heavier construction, English-style action rather than the lighter Viennese action, triple stringing, four pedal stops (lute, dampers, buff, una corda), and five-and-a-half octave range from FF to c4. The piano’s influence on Beethoven’s compositional process is apparent in his Thirty-Two Variations on an Original Theme, WoO 80 (1806), a quasi-systematic exploration of piano techniques, textures, and sonorities that exploits both the capacities and limitations of the Erard.

There are a number of different imaging modalities that can be used to confirm atlantoaxial instability. Plain film radiographs of the cervical spine can be used to assess the atlantodental interval (ADI). Cervical CT is necessary to assess the atlantoaxial bony anatomy as well as to assess the foramen transversarium at C1 and C2. In particular, CT scan should be used to estimate screw length, medial/lateral and cranial/caudal screw trajectory. MRI can also evaluate the extent of cervical cord compression or cord injury that has occurred due to atlantoaxial instability.

Abstract:
In most human societies, ritualized and firm rules evolved for cutting the navel-string and handling the umbilical stump. These customs were not always beneficial, and contributed to umbilical infection, neonatal tetanus, and navel hernia. After prematurity, neonatal tetanus was the most frequent cause of death in poor countries up to the 19th century. It was caused by poor cord hygiene and by the age-old habit of severing the navel-string with biological products instead of man-made tools, which included palm leaves, blades of grass, mussel shells, crusts of bread, and other devices likely to be contaminated with tetanus spores. The navel-stump was covered with zinc powder, starch, oak-gall powder, grease, musk, clarified butter, and many other substances believed to protect the baby from evil, but actually creating anaerobic conditions in the umbilical wound. Care of the cord was associated with deep-rooted rituals and customs, and dangerous techniques persisted on islands well into modern times.

Abstract The honeycomb sandwich structure composite is a very efficient and complex structure widely used in the aircraft industry. Honeycomb-cored sandwich panels increase part stiffness at a lower weight than monolithic composite materials. This chapter describes the analysis of the intermingling of the film adhesive/prepreg resin system. It discusses the causes and effects of honeycomb core movement, which results in core crush. The chapter also explains the formation of a void in honeycomb composites and the failure mechanisms in honeycomb sandwich structure composites.

Abstract:
A little girl in Raytown, Missouri, used to spend part of almost every day in a special place in the woods near her house. The place had a calming effect on her. “Sometimes I go there when I’m mad . . . and then, just with the peacefulness, I’m better. I can come back home happy, and my mom doesn’t even know why.” In his book Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv recounts the end of this fifth grader’s story. “And then they just cut the woods down. It was like they cut down part of me.” I know this same feeling. When I was her age, I watched the prairiesavannah I loved to explore turned into a housing development, chasing away my friends, the meadowlarks. I watched my aging Irish poet friend, Ken Olsen, try to fight the city to save the little bit of woods next to his house from being turned into an apartment complex. The loss nearly gave him a heart attack … or it did give him one, just not one that could be seen. Another friend mourned for weeks after the city cut down the oak in front of her apartment complex that offered dappled green shade to her fourth-floor home. It’s grief, pure and simple. But with all grief, life goes on, sometimes even when we don’t want it to. And there’s hope in that. The land systems long to rejuvenate, just as we long to have them back. Leopold’s restoration work at the Shack and the Arboretum have expanded exponentially, into every ecosystem on land and even into ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs, kelp beds, tidal communities, and oyster beds. Because so much damage has been done, this is one of the most vibrant, growing, and needed areas of the Leopold legacy. Steven Brower, a landscape architect and Leopold family historian from Burlington, often walks the woods, caves, and bottomlands where Aldo roamed as a child. Brower’s eyes penetrate the landscapes with a kind of x-ray vision, seeing what once was underneath what is today.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the ways in which a hero of the nineteenth century — a Malaysian pirate who, in his rescuing of the imperially downtrodden, the exploited, and the betrayed, spoke in actions and words with anti-imperialist flourish — became reimagined as a twentieth-century, post-war anti-hero by a director of westerns all'italiana who had, in his own films, fashioned a bandit, a ‘noble savage’, who opened the eyes of a Texas ranger to the corruption of the aristocracy and Orientalist assumptions. The first section introduces the nineteenth-century Italian children's author Emilio Salgari, and the hero of his most famous and well-loved novels: the pirate Sandokan. The second section analyzes Sergio Sollima's radical westerns, focusing on the protagonist of La resa dei conti and Corri, uomo, corri: Cuchillo, played by the Cuban-American-Italian actor Tomás Milián. The final section examines the ways in which Sollima melds his vision of the anarchic borderlands of the USA and Mexico with his imagining of the primitive wilds of Southeast Asia in his 1970s television series and films, bringing Sandokan, Salgari, and Sollima together.

When detonation cords are used in explosive trains such as explosive circuits, the output performance can be obtained by destructive tests of matching samples from common production lots. In this paper the shockwave pressure testing method for Detonating Cords is studied. Two types of sensors are used to test the shockwave pressure. One is a thin film Mn-Cu sensor which is a standard testing method for output performance of explosive devices. The other sensor is a high pressure sensor with a microcircuit in it; this sensor can be used many times. The testing results are verified in the detonation equation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Cored wires and high velocity arc spraying technique (HVAS) were applied to produce Zn-Al-Mg and Zn-Al-Mg-Re alloy coatings on low carbon steel substrates. And the effects of rare-earth metal on microstructure and corrosion resistance of the Zn-Al-Mg coating were investigated. The microstructures and mechanical properties were studied by SEM, EDS and XRD. The coatings show a typical aspect of layered thermal sprayed material structure. SEM results revealed that the addition of small amount of REM to the cored wires would result in a fine grained structure in the coating layer together with a dense microstructure, which is the reason for the adhesion strength enhancement and the porosity reducing of the coating. And the electrochemical corrosion mechanisms of the coatings were discussed. Chemical analysis of the coating indicated the composition to be Zn-16.5Al-5.9Mg-4.6O-RE (wt%). The phases of the coatings are Zn, Al5Mg11Zn4, MgZn2 and Al3Mg2 mainly, together with oxide ZnO, ZnAl2O4, and MgAl2O4. The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of Zn-Al-Mg-RE coating were investigated in 5%NaCl solution comparing with Zn-Al-Mg coating. Electrochemical measurements in the forms of potential-time and potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that such two coatings behaved excellent electrochemical corrosion resistance in salt solution, and the Zn-Al-Mg-RE coating was much more stable. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results revealed that small amount of rare-earth metal can not promote to form the passive film but it could enhance the surface property of the coating extraordinarily, which will has a great effect on the corrosion behaviors of the coating. Abstract:
Abstract Residual stresses resulting from welds are a key consideration in the design and assessment of piping and pressure vessels. As welding is a variable process, the resulting variability in weld residual stress should be accounted for in design and assessment. This paper investigates the variability in residual stress resulting from flux cored arc welds by performing residual stress measurements on a set of nominally identical welds between 25mm plates of grade DH36 steel. The welds were produced in two environments to assess the impact on residual stress variability: a well-controlled laboratory environment and a less controlled factory environment. The results showed significant variability in the residual stresses between the welds, with standard deviations up to 25% of the peak value in some locations near the weld center. The welds were two sided and higher variability was measured in the side performed second, with the variability in heat applied appearing to be a key driver of the residual stress variability. A difference was observed between the standard deviations of residual stress in the factory and laboratory samples, with the laboratory samples showing less residual stress variability. Whilst the small number of samples measured prevents firm quantitative conclusions being drawn about the potential differences in residual stress variability between production environments the results do suggest that there is value in further study.

Abstract:
Abstract The microstructure and sliding wear behavior from room temperature up to 650°C of Fe-Al intermetallic coating produced by cored wire and high velocity arc spraying (HVAS) have been investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersion spectroscope (EDS), optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the microstructure and sliding friction and wear mechanism of the coatings. Chemical analysis of the coating indicated the composition to be Fe-20.0Al-14.1O (at.%). The microstructure was found to consist of Fe3Al, FeAl and α-Fe regions mainly, together with fine oxide (Al2O3) layers and a little Al. The results of sliding wear indicated that the Fe-Al coating exhibited low friction coefficient and low wear rate at elevated temperatures. The reason of the friction coefficient decreasing at elevated temperatures is that protective oxide film formed on the worn surface during sliding wear process. And delamination is the predominant wear mechanism of the coatings. The Fe3Al and FeAl intermetallics which have higher strength and hardness at elevated temperatures can effectively resist crack initiation, propagation and splat fracture, thus resulting in excellent high temperature wear resistance of the Fe-Al coating.

Abstract:
A set of experiments was conducted to expose different types of energized electrical cords for lamps, office equipment, and appliances to a developing room fire exposure. All of the cords were positioned on the floor and arranged in a manner to receive a similar thermal exposure. Six types of cords commonly used as power supply cords, extension cords, and as part of residential electrical wiring systems were chosen for the experiments. The non-metallic sheathed cables (NMB) typically found in residential electrical branch wiring were included to provide a link to previous research. The basic test design was to expose the six different types of cords, on the floor of a compartment to a growing fire to determine the conditions under which the cord would trip the circuit breaker and/or undergo an arc fault. All of the cords would be energized and installed on a non-combustible surface. Six cord types (18-2 SPT1, 16-3 SJTW, 12-2 NM-B, 12-3 NM-B, 18-3 SVT, 18-2 NISPT-2) and three types of circuit protection (Molded case circuit breaker (MCCB), combination Arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI), Ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)) were exposed to six room-scale fires. The circuit protection was remote from the thermal exposure. The six room fires consisted of three replicate fires with two sofas as the main fuel source, two replicate fires with one sofa as the main fuel source and one fire with two sofas and MDF paneling on three walls in the room. Each fuel package was sufficient to support flashover conditions in the room and as a result, the impact on the cords and circuit protection was not significantly different. The average peak heat release rate of the sofa fueled compartment fires with gypsum board ceiling and walls was 6.8 MW. The addition of vinyl covered MDF wall paneling on three of the compartment walls increased the peak heat release rate to 12 MW, although most of the increased energy release occurred outside of the compartment opening. In each experiment during post flashover exposure, the insulation on the cords ignited and burned through, exposing bare conductor. During this period the circuits faulted. The circuit protection devices are not designed to provide thermal protection, and, thus, were installed remote from the fire. The devices operated as designed in all experiments. All of the circuit faults resulted in either a magnetic trip of the conventional circuit breaker or a ground-fault trip in the GFCI or AFCI capable circuit protection devices. Though not required by UL 1699, Standard for Safety for Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupters as the solution for detection methodology, the AFCIs used had differential current detection. Examination of signal data showed that the only cord types that tripped with a fault to ground were the insulated conductors in non-metallic sheathed cables (12-2 NM-B and 12-3 NM-B). This was expected due to the bare grounding conductor present. Assessments of both the thermal exposure and physical damage to the cords did not reveal any correlation between the thermal exposure, cord damage, and trip type.

Boyle, M. Terrestrial vegetation monitoring at Congaree National Park: 2021 data summar. National Park Service, August 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2300302.

Full text
Abstract:
he Southeast Coast Network (SECN) conducts long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring as part of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program. The vegetation community vital sign is one of the primary-tier resources identified by SECN park managers, and monitoring is conducted at 15 network parks (DeVivo et al. 2008). Monitoring plants and their associated communities over time allows for targeted understanding of ecosystems within the SECN geography, which provides managers information about the degree of change within their parks’ natural vegetation. 2021 marked the first year of conducting this monitoring effort at Congaree National Park (CONG). Sixty-four vegetation plots were established throughout the park from May through August. Data collected in each plot included species richness across multiple spatial scales, species-specific cover and constancy, species-specific woody stem seedling/sapling counts and adult tree (greater than 10 centimeters [3.9 inches {in}]) diameter at breast height (DBH), overall tree health, landform, soil, observed disturbance, and woody biomass (i.e., fuel load) estimates. This report summarizes the baseline (year 1) terrestrial vegetation data collected at Congaree National Park in 2021. Data were stratified across two dominant broadly defined habitats within the park, Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodlands and Coastal Plain Alluvial Wetlands. Noteworthy findings include: 295 vascular plant taxa (species or lower) were observed across 64 vegetation plots, including 37 species not previously documented within the park. 27 unique species of sedge (Carex sp.) were found across all plots. The most frequently encountered species in each broadly defined habitat included: Coastal Plain Alluvial Wetlands: green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), red maple (Acer rubrum), possumhaw (Ilex decidua), eastern poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans var. radicans), muscadine (Muscadinia rotundifolia var. rotundifolia) and smallspike false nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica). Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodlands: loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), muscadine, sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), willow oak (Quercus phellos), roundleaf greenbrier (Smilax rotundifolia), and Carolina jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens). Seven non-native species categorized as invasive (Significant or Severe Threat) by the South Carolina Exotic Pest Plant Council (SCEPPC 2014) were encountered within the park during this monitoring effort. These included sweet autumn virginsbower (Clematis terniflora), Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense), Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), Japanese climbing fern (Lygodium japonicum), Japanese stilt grass (Microstegium vimineum), marsh dew flower (Murdannia keisak), and Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis). Four species listed as rare and tracked by the South Carolina Natural Heritage Program (SCNHP 2023) were encountered during this monitoring effort. These included Cherokee sedge (Carex cherokeensis), ravenfoot sedge (Carex crus-corvi), Santee azalea (Rhododendron eastmanii), and heartleaf nettle (Urtica chamaedryoides). Sweetgum, water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica), green ash, and bald-cypress were the most dominant species within the tree stratum of Coastal Plain Alluvial Wetland sites; loblolly pine was the most dominant species of Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodlands. Feral hog (Sus scrofa) rooting was observed in 73% of the Coastal Plain Alluvial Wetland plots, while 20% of the plots had over 60% damage from rooting behavior. Hog activity was observed throughout the Congaree National Park’s floodplain, but largely absent from sites along the park’s northern boundary with the private hunt club. Based on data collected from eight Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodland plots, the canopy and subcanopy composition and structure of the park’s upland pine woodlands are not in a condition to maintain fire-dependency and thus promote healthy and sustainable longleaf pine woodlands. Densities of loblolly pine in the canopy and sweetgum in the sapling stratum are elevated. However, with continued fire and fire surrogate treatments to these upland units, thriving longleaf pine woodlands can be achieved. All plots are scheduled to be resampled during the summer of 2025.
