Abstract:
The aim of this article is to redefine the phenomenon of borrowing on the basis of the Corpus of Spoken Lithuanian: to analyse the frequency and use of foreign words, to determine the proportion of new borrowings among foreign words, and to examine whether some of the foreign words may be treated as the instances of code switching or code mixing. The article attempts to make a distinction between new borrowings and other foreign words and discusses the phenomenon of code mixing in spoken language for the first time in Lithuanian; it also explains the terms of code switching and code mixing, which have not been discussed in Lithuanian linguistics. The results of the quantitative research have revealed that foreign words comprise only 0.33% of all words in spoken language. The largest proportion of these words is English words and phrases (93%), while lexemes or phrases from Russian, Latin, or Italian comprise only 7% of the words. The research has determined that new borrowings constitute 44% of all foreign words in the conversations under the present investigation, and code mixing has been employed in 56% of all instances. The research has demonstrated that code mixing is the most typical of spoken private speech, while the use of new borrowings is more frequent in more formal registers of spoken language, i.e. academic and media language.

Abstract This research was carried out with two main purposes: to survey the methods necessary to translate Chinese words and phrases into English, and to investigate how frequently their English versions appear in twenty different countries or regions. The research was conducted through an analysis of data from Xi Jinping’s book The Governance of China (English version), published by Foreign Languages Press. The results show that 401 Chinese words and phrases reflect seven specific translation methods. Moreover, their frequency of usage shows obvious differences across twenty different countries or regions based on the statistical analysis of the corpora. It is hoped that the Chinese-English (C-E) translation of political texts can benefit from these conclusions.

Machine Translation (MT) refers to automatically trying to translate words, phrases, text, or speech from one language to another (Arnold et al., 1994). This study aims to analyze English as Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions on utilizing machine translation (MT) in translating words, phrases, text, or speech. This research used descriptive qualitative method, 13 EFL students as respondents using this type of technology were described and analyzed. Data were gained from the analysis of the translation quality supported by machine translation procedures and questionnaires to 13 English students in translation subject. The results showed that, EFL students in the sixth and seventh semester of English education department of Megarezky University in translating words, phrases, texts, paragraphs had to recheck and rearrange to get a good translation by their own understandings. Machine Translation (MT) becomes another option to recognize the meaning of foreign language. Machine Translation can be used as dictionary as well. MT is incredibly useful and helpful, it can provide a general description to the users, it gives an inspiration or consideration to the users to understand the meaning.

This study aims to describe the forms of retention of the Javanese language in the Tegal dialect in the cerkak of Tegalan Warung Poci by Dr. Maufur. This research produces forms of retention of Javanese Tegal dialect, namely forms of active language retention and forms of passive language retention by recording it on a data card. Forms of active language retention in the form of the use of words with Tegal dialect that are rarely used in daily life include: basic word forms, forms of affixed words, forms of reduplication, forms of reduplication with implications, and forms of clay saroja. The passive language retention form shows the use of foreign language elements in fragments of Tegal dialect which includes the use of basic words, affixed words, phrases, reduplication, affixed reduplication, and translation of foreign language words (Indonesian and English) into the Tegal dialect that refers to language error or interference. The translation shows that the Tegal dialect is dynamic because it raises elements of the foreign language in the sentence fragment with the aim of creating communicative sentences and giving a different color to the use of the Tegal dialect.Keyword: language maintenance; Tegal dialect; Warung Poci

This paper argues that working memory is heavily involved in language acquisition as (a) a major part of language learning is the learning of sequences, (b) working memory allows short-term maintenance of sequence information, and (c) short-term rehearsal of sequences promotes the consolidation of long-term memories of language sequences. It first reviews evidence supporting this position. Next it presents an experiment that demonstrates that subjects encouraged to rehearse foreign language (FL) utterances are better than both silent controls and subjects who are prevented from rehearsal by articulatory suppression at (a) learning to comprehend and translate FL words and phrases, (b) explicit metalinguistic knowledge of the detailed content of grammatical regularities, (c) acquisition of the FL forms of words and phrases, (d) accuracy in FL pronunciation, and (e) some aspects of productive (but not receptive) grammatical fluency and accuracy. Finally, it describes possible mechanisms underlying these effects.

Currently, multimedia-assisted foreign language teaching is a topic of high interest in the field of foreign language teaching. The main goal of teaching foreign language is the formation of foreign language communicative competence which implies the development of speech skills. In the methods there are different approaches to teaching foreign language, one of which is the lexical approach. Undoubtedly, the lexical approach involves focus on learning the vocabulary of the language. However, there are different points of view on which methods and forms of work are the most effective ones. Mastering vocabulary occurs by studying the compatibility of words, phrases and combinations of words. Collocations are an isolated concept, meaning certain words in a language that tend to be used together. Working with collocations is an essential component of the lexical skills formation, accordingly, we should speak about the inclusion of collocational competence in communicative competence. Analysis of the methodic literature showed that the issue of the collocations’ role in the lexical speech skills formation is not very disclosed in the domestic and foreign methodic literature. In the presented article: 1) we conduct an analysis of the works of domestic and foreign scientists on the lexical approach in teaching foreign language; 2) we prove that the process of learning vocabulary goes by learning certain combinations of words and the ability to use them; 3) we derive the definition of collocations based on the definitions and classifications of scientists; 4) we determine the key place of collocations in the vocabulary learning.

The article is devoted to the names of music stars in Russian youth slang. The number of English borrowings, which appear in the Russian youth’s language, is growing rapidly. Russian youngsters are open for western music. The paper presents the processes of implementation of English names into Russian slang. The studied material shows how English words are transformed to adjust to Russian phonetics. The author of this paper proves that young people do not copy foreign words and phrases, but treat them as a basis for further modifications. They play with foreign words in order to adjust them to Russian phonetics and add humour which is a characteristic feature of youth slang.

The paper discusses the use of words of foreign origin in Slovenian political discourse. At the outset, this usage is broken down into four groups: the first contains specific phrases and terminology inherent to the political domain; the second contains words of foreign origin generally present in the Slovene language (because of their high frequency of nonexclusivistic use, these words are not of interest to the scope of this investigation); the third contains various words of foreign origin used as affectional packaging for messages with the aim of stimulating the desired interpretation (framing reality); the fourth group, which is the most interesting for our research, is made up of words of foreign origin which could have a marker: + marked, + not necessary, + unwanted, but only if we accept the logic of purism. All the words in this group could be replaced - without any loss of meaning - with their Slovene equivalents. The speakerʼs motivation for using the foreign word is crucial to our discussion. In the framework of Pierre Bourdieuʼs poststructural theory as well as Austinʼs and Searleʼs speech act theory, statistical data is analysed to observe how usage frequency varies in correlation with selected factors which manifest the speakerʼs habitus. We argue that words of foreign origin represent symbolic cultural capital, a kind of added value which functions as credit and as such is an important form of the accumulation of capital.

Discourse markers (DMs), represented by words and phrases such as but, you know, moreover, have for many years been a widely discussed topic in linguistics in Poland and abroad. However, no attention has been paid yet to DMs in teaching Polish as a foreign language (PFL). The paper explores this neglected issue by analysing the modes of presentation of DMs in the three most popular series of textbooks for teaching PFL (levels A1-B1). The textbooks were analysed manually to identify DMs and the ways in which they are taught. The results show that the textbooks differ in the number of DMs appearing in them. However, four common problematic aspects of the instruction of DMs in the analysed textbooks were identified: translation of DMs, usage of homographs of DMs, the mechanical nature of exercises and lack of sufficient input

This study is entitled "Mixing Indonesian Language Codes in Advertising Discourse". The use of Indonesian in discourse advertisements has taken place in another language, namely local languages and foreign languages. This study examines the factors that cause code mixing, the types and forms / forms of code mixing, and the social meaning that is caused by the code mixing. The study uses the method of observation (observation) and data collection techniques, descriptive qualitative methods used in analyzing data, and informal methods used to collect the results of the analysis. In this study found two kinds of mixed codes, namely mixed codes into local languages (Balinese and Javanese) and mixed codes out of English. The shape and form of the code that is found is a mixture of code in the form of words, namely nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. In addition to the form of words also found a mixture of code in the form of phrases, namely nominal phrases, verbal phrases, and prepositional phrases. There are two causes of code mixing in discourse, namely intralinguistic factors and extralinguistic factors. The code mixing events in the discourse are related to the language and social background, so that social meaning arises due to the code mixing behavior. Social meaning that emerges, shows more educated, shows social class, shows creativity, and shows the practical and regionalism.

This study describes English borrowing or loan words during COVID-19 pandemic frequently used by public and absorped by Indonesian. Some words mostly from medical and healthcare terms, but many of them are from daily, practical, social life terms. People don’t realize that they use many unfamiliar words and phrases when they communicate in Indonesian. Those words are English borrowings. The aims of the study are ; (1) to investigate some English borrowing words or phrases, (2) to describe the borrowing process from English into Indonesian. The Qualitative Decriptive Analysis Method used in analysing English borrowings . Obtains 95 English words taken then classified into the process of borrowings. 56 words from 95 words or 58,95 % already available in Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), 39 words or 41,05% is not listed in KBBI or signed with n.a or not available. In the borrowing process obtains 34 words or 35,7% as adoption , 45 words or 47,3% as adaptation , 14 words or 14,7 % as translation, and the rest is 2 words or 2,1 % as creation process. The result shows that English borrowings absorped by Indonesian through both adoption and adaptation are quite significant, total both is 83%. It means that Indonesian is quite open language to foreign languages. This fact also shows that Indonesian is a dynamic, up to date, and modern language.

Abstract:
The article considers the structure and semantics of terminological phrases with the core component “Geld” in German economic terminology. The following tasks were done: to analyze the approaches to the definition of terminological phrases, carry out the thematic classification of studied units, and identify the main terminological structural models. New terminological compounds were recorded and analyzed. The cases of coining of new meanings by already established, codified terminological phrases were investigated. The study's relevance is due to the rapid development of economic terminology. This is manifested by the addition of new units, the processes in the everyday vocabulary. The terminological vocabulary of economics requires a sufficient level of knowledge and skillful application. The study of structural and semantic features of terminological phrases contributes to a better understanding of functioning of technical language patterns. Moreover, the terminology is a broad layer of vocabulary that closely interacts and intertwines with other lexical items. Therefore, one of the most critical tasks of modern linguistics is studying the formation patterns of terminological vocabulary, structure, and semantics. German economic terminology is a dynamic system. Over time, new forms of management are emerging, business related to the sale of goods, services, and their production extends to foreign countries with foreign partners. This is why such terminology actively functions in the economic sphere of legislation, in the office work documentation. All scientific and technical phrases in the German language can be roughly divided according to the method of their creation into the following groups: common words terms, derived words terms and terminological phrases. Quite a considerable number of technical terms are characteristic of the German language. The studied terminology is heterogeneous and consists of a vocabulary of specific industries: investment, banking, finance, politics, economy, etc. The classification of terms and terminological phrases according to the content of the concepts was based on the collected material for research. It contains 170 terminological units picked by the method of continuous sampling from economic publications). Due to the analysis of the phatic material, it is possible to assert that the economic terminology of the German language is closely connected with the vocabulary of general use. Although terminological phrases are somewhat cumbersome, which contradicts the pragmatic principles of communication, they are motivated, which is extremely important in terminology. Such terminological units have more opportunities to reflect complex economic concepts accurately.

Abstract : The main objectives of this study are to identify the symbols which are contextually attached to certain words and phrases; to analyze the contextual meaning of the symbols; and to describe the pedagogical implications of the uses of those symbols to the practices of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). These all are conducted by following Pierce’s triadic theory. The sources of the data of this study are some carefully selected short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe. Descriptive qualitative method is used to collect the data which are then analysed and presented explanatorily. The results of the analysis of the data suggest that there are six symbols which are contextually attached to words and phrases in The Masque of Red Death, three symbols in The Pit and Pendulum, and three symbols in The Black Cat. Those symbols carry important pedagogical implications to the teaching of English as a foreign language. This implies that teachers of English may use these short stories and their symbols to teach English vocabulary in reading section by using flashcard, and by which they can conclude the learning section by presenting the moral values in the short stories.Keywords : Symbols, Semiotic

Abstract:
This article is dedicated to the study of the semantic content of coordinate phrases and their role in the process of creating English idioms as representatives of the worldview of English society. The author outlines the key aspects of the interpretation of the linguistic picture of the world in domestic and foreign linguistics. The place and role of phraseological units, in particular idioms, in the English language picture of the world are clarified. The values ​​of these lexical units are emphasized, as they not only reflect the spheres of society but also contribute to the enrichment of the individual with linguistic information, help to learn the language through the prism of modern living communication, imbued with such units of language. The manifestation of coordinate phrases in English idioms is traced and the peculiarity of their formal-grammatical and semantic-syntactic levels is investigated. After the analysis, the author concludes that the language has idioms in which coordinate phrases are homogeneous, i.e. both components belong to the same part of speech, mainly nouns, verbs and adjective phrases. Their primary meaning as free phrases is leveled in the idioms, so the latter belong to the phraseological fusions according to the well-known V. Vinogradov’s classification of phraseological units. It is noteworthy that there are cases of coordinate connection at the level of word combinations between functional words – prepositions. Not surprisingly, but such combinations have all the parameters by which they can be attributed to fixed coordinate phrases.

Abstract:
The article provides guidelines on working with thematic texts with students of non-linguistic majors. It seeks to formulate effective and efficient methods of working with thematic texts, drawing upon the main types of working with texts in general. The article has made use of the method of analysing thematic texts and, therefore, argues that there are three basic steps in working with thematic texts, namely pre-textual, textual, and post-textual. A set of exercises based on the book On the Uses of Philosophy by Will Durant has been used to illustrate the point. In the final analysis, the article argues that the methodology it sets out focuses on developing students’ reading skills through helping them:• correctly understand a foreign word;• make conscious use of the structure of the meanings of foreign words;• combine words and/or phrases in accordance with relevant lexical and grammatical rules;• formulate and express an opinion in a foreign language in various form with thematic vocabulary;• and understand thoughts expressed by other foreign-language speakers.

The phenomenon of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused many problems, starting from the health, economic, and socio-cultural field. However, in the field of language, the outbreak of Covid-19 has actually increased the productivity of the new Indonesian vocabulary. The rapid and massive development of Covid-19 to many countries has made the public and the government panic. Covid-19 has become the central topic of mass media coverage and various new terms/vocabularies are widely used. This study aims to describe the productivity of Indonesian’s new vocabulary during the Covid-19 pandemic, its category classification, frequency of use, and the factors that cause its emergence. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data collection was done by observation method with note-taking technique. Data analysis used the intralingual equivalent method. The results showed that the productivity of new vocabulary during the Covid-19 pandemic was in the form of basic words, affixed words, abbreviations/acronyms, compound words, and phrases. Based on the category, the new vocabulary is in the form of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns. Based on the frequency of use, the most consecutive are nominal phrases, verbal phrases, and adjective phrases. The factors causing the emergence of Indonesian’s new vocabulary were extraordinary events related to the outbreak of Covid-19, the influence of foreign languages, and community creativity.

Good knowledge of a foreign language is an important factor contributing to the professional recognition and career prospects. In order to improve professional foreign language competence, the study of the situation in professional foreign language teaching and learning was carried out in three business sectors: logistics, transport, service industry. The survey was carried among three target groups: employers, foreign language teachers and students. Employers were asked to name language skills which employees need most to perform work, to express an opinion on the role of employers in the English language learning process as well as to identify topics, most common words, phrases, or specific professional terms which would be important for their employees to know. Students were asked about motivation and foreign language needs, training environment and teaching methods as well as about their learning styles. Foreign language teachers' questionnaires contained the evaluation of teaching process and methods used, lessons preparation and evaluation of learning. The study results show that foreign language competences are considered by employers as one of the most important for the employees. However, the level of language competences varies according to the position and role within the company. Based on the findings, suggestions and recommendations were developed for acquiring a professional foreign language in the three business sectors.

The subject of this research is the foreign words adopted by native speakers of the Hill Mari language from or through the Russian language. The object of this research is the oral speech of modern native speakers of the Hill Mari language. The goal consists in determination of the role played by the Russian loanwords in the modern Hill Mari speech. The research leans on dialectological materials acquired in the rural areas of Hill Mari District of Republic of Mari El, as well as recording of radiobroadcast “Hill Mari Hour” and TV shows “My Hill Mari Land”) in the Hill Mari language, with application of the methods of observation, linguistic descriptions, elements of the comparative method, and continuous sampling technique. This article is first to analyze Russian loanwords in the oral speech of modern Hill Mari people, which defines the scientific novelty. The following conclusions were formulated: the active vocabulary of Hill Mari people have certain words that were adopted by Hill Mari language long ago and  perceived by native speakers as foreign words; there is also a range of word familiar to all native speakers, which are the only nomination for designated notions; speech of the people of new generation marks an excessive inappropriate use of foreign words that clutters up the native language, deprives its uniqueness, impedes communication between people, makes it unclear to some people, and results in the formation of improper phrases.

The purpose of this study is to describe elitist language on the Humor Recehku Instagram account, namely (1) non-standard word forms; (2) abbreviated forms that cause non-standard; and (3) word forms from foreign languages. The method used in this research is the descriptive method. The data collection technique was done by observing and taking notes. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman qualitative analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions and levers. This research leads to the content analysis “content analysis”. The data in this study are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences that experience language shifts in an elitist form. The results of this study indicate that there is a language shift in the case of using elitist language in the Humor Recehku Instagram account. First, non-standard word forms include non-standard words without a play (emang, gini, telfon, sampe, ngerasa dan sebagainya); non-standard words with a pun (Oktrouble dan gw); and non-standard words weakening phonemes (males, denger, bener-bener, ye, cakep, anjeng, kecapean, dan temen). Second, abbreviations that cause non-standard abbreviated standard words (sm, org, krn, dan trs); and abbreviated non-standard words (not and yesterday2). Third, foreign language words are divided into (typing, excuse, mood and so on); phrase (self-reminder, close friend IG); and sentences (is the best kind of sleep, oh well honey, you keep your small circle, and friend with many but trust any).

The article reveals the possibilities of using podcasting in the process of teaching foreign students of preparatory departments of the Ukrainian language as a foreign language, shows its didactic potential (resources Studyukrainian and Ukrainianlessons). The article analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of podcasting in the organization of the educational process and presents the types of work with podcasts. The modern educational process is inconceivable without the widespread use of such technology as “podcasting”. A podcast is a single audio or video file or a series of such files that are published at the same address on the Internet and have a certain frequency of publication, which depends on the creator of a particular podcast. One of the most productive platforms for online learning of Ukrainian as a foreign language is the Studyukrainian resource. The site already has 5 seasons of podcasts (about 160 recordings), and the resource is actively replenished. In the first season the podcasts are written in English, in the following seasons the share of English in the teacher’s explanations decreases significantly, in the fifth season the podcasts are written exclusively in Ukrainian. Each podcast lasts about 20 minutes. Foreign students have the opportunity to receive by e-mail a “script” in PDF format of the podcast and additional materials on the topic (grammar tables, explanations, examples, diagrams, a list of phrases and dialogues, exercises for more practice and vocabulary on the topic, etc.). In addition, the foreign student is given additional opportunities: sets of cards for learning words, videos of various songs and clips, which explain the Ukrainian realities or features of word usage (for example, national holidays, greetings etc.). The site provides foreign students with a dictionary, a list of phrases, a grammar block, a blog for communication with the teacher. In the process of learning the Ukrainian language as a foreign language, the fullest possible disclosure of the possibilities of podcasting technology is possible, because the language as a means of transmitting information in this context is also the object of study. The use of podcasts in teaching various activities helps to increase students’ motivation to learn the national language; the emergence of choice in the selection of interesting phonetic material; promotes the formation of listening skills and the ability to perceive different speech styles with different accents and intonations; improving speaking skills. Podcast as a media carrier of information is, along with other resources, an integral technical means of distance learning of Ukrainian as a foreign language, which allows to solve complex problems of foreign language education. Abstract Starting from the premise that cultures assume myriads of foreign elements, alterities, and differences, this paper analyses a phenomenon that becomes a conscious and an intentional one, namely language hybridity. Our purpose is to give thoughtful attention to certain instances of hybridity perceived at the syntactic, semantic, and lexical levels. Since language users make their choice in any situational context, we witness a great degree of linguistic blending: e. g. the borrowing of words and phrases becomes tied to new ways of making meaning. Additionally, we face a dynamic increase of mixed language registers, styles, and voices that form a complex linguistic repertoire in a literary work. For exemplification, we will analyse Margaret Atwood’s experimentations across genre and linguistic boundaries encountered in her short story Dark Lady, integral part of the short fiction collection Stone Mattress. Nine Wicked Tales (2014). This narrative is characterized by a mixture of heterogeneous elements: hybrid phrases created as a result of borrowing words, elevated language (sprinkled with widely known Latin sayings), and alteration of idioms by one-word substitution. Hybridity becomes a way through which Margaret Atwood deconstructs language borders. In Dark Lady, the Canadian writer shows that hybridity stimulates innovation since the individual is allowed to move freely between spaces of meaning.

The article presents a conceptual apparatus of conceptualization on the example of economic cognitive sphere. The relevance of this work can be considered from the point of view of language of the market study as an accumulative sphere of fixation of market-economic surrounding reality, and a cognitive-pragmatic aspect of human consciousness development. The aim was to evaluate the language of market economy from cognitive-derivational position as well as problems connected with the usage of borrowed foreign words. The authors solved the tasks: 1) analyzed and interpreted language of the market special vocabulary in English and Russian; 2) understood the scientific and the professional picture of the world through the economic language; 3) identified the specific expression of external and internal state of its participants; 4) found out the borrowed foreign words; 5) described the collected information. During the study of the material the authors used: 1) the component analysis method; 2) the continuous sampling method; 3) the analysis of terminological definitions; 4) the classification method. The researchers analyzed the concept, which was the main result and means of linguistic conceptualization of the world and the economic term as a result and means of conceptualization of the economic picture of the world. The main parameters of economic cognitive derivational system and borrowed foreign words spheres were described. A detailed analysis of terminological phrases allowed identifying the most common structural types of functioning in the economic cognitive sphere of composite economic terms and borrowed foreign words. It can be concluded that the study of the market economy language makes it possible to regard its evolution as a result of social, creative, spiritual activity of economic branch and science.

Summary In this paper, we describe a new lexicographic resource for advanced learners of Lithuanian, the Lexical Database of Lithuanian Language Usage, which is the first attempt in Lithuanian lexicography to prepare a description of vocabulary based on the word usage analysis in the particular corpus. The written subpart of the Lithuanian Pedagogic Corpus (approx. 620,000 tokens) was used to develop headword lists and collect word usage information in the form of corpus patterns. In the database, there are 3,700 lexical items, words and multi-word units (compounds, idioms or sayings). For the appr. 700 most frequent words from a shared vocabulary (they appear in texts assigned to A1, A2, B1 and B2 levels, and their frequency in the whole corpus is 100 occurrences and above), we prepared a full-record entry: it includes sense-related corpus patterns with grammatical, semantic and lexical information and the examples illustrating all pattern components. The short-record entry (no patterns, only examples) is prepared for the less frequent words from the shared vocabulary, which are derivationally related to the most frequent headwords. The users are provided with 2,542 derivatives, which are linked to 940 headwords. In the database, 28,550 encoding examples are manually selected for all 3,000 headwords and 700 phrases. We discuss the features of the database, and, particularly, the adopted semi-automated procedure of Corpus Pattern Analysis, which was used for the description of word usage. We evaluate the approach applied, and discuss its advantages for users as well as provide the suggestions for the future improvements of the resource, which can be used as an additional resource in the classroom of Lithuanian as a foreign language, and, together with the available corpora, fill in a gap of usage information in the existing (learner) dictionaries.

The main goal of foreign language teaching is the development of foreign language communicative competence that implies the development of speech skills. Due to the prevalence of the competency-based approach in the methods, as well as based on the lexical approach, special attention is paid to the collocational competence development. Since the vocabulary acquisition is founded on the acquisition of the compatibility of words and phrases, and collocations are certain words in the language that tend to be used together, we should talk about the inclusion of collocational competence into the communicative competence. Informatization of education influences the methods of foreign language teaching. For the successful implementation of educational process in the modern world, the development of linguocomputer competence is necessary for both students and the teacher. Analysis of the methodic literature showed that the issue of the psychological and pedagogical conditions for the collocational competence development of students is not well covered in domestic and foreign methodic literature, and requires a more detailed study. In the presented study: 1) we conduct an analysis of the domestic and foreign scientists works on the psychological and pedagogical conditions for the competencies development; 2) we prove the importance of collocation competence development of students; 3) we study the issue of linguocomputer competence development of both students and teachers; 4) we identify the key place of the complex task “dictogloss” as a mean of collocational competence development, as well as a mean of linguocomputer competence formation and development.

The analysis is based on the qualitative approach by focusing the analysis on the discourse approach. The result of the analysis shows that the emotional aspect was frequently used to engage the costumers to the product. Some advertisements also use foreign language to give a good impression to the costumer. From the result of the analysis, it can be inferred that food and drinks advertisement not only provided information and about the product but also reflect the cultural value of the costumers.

Mo Yan is a famous Chinese writer. He has become the first Chinese to win the Nobel Prize in literature. Frog is one of Mo Yan's masterpieces. His works were strongly influenced by magical realism and told the legend which took place in Gaomi, Shandong Province, during the Cultural Revolution and the early years of reform and opening up. Different countries have different cultural formation processes, which have led to creating their culture-loaded words. Culture-loaded words refer to the words, phrases, and idioms used to signify objects peculiar to specific cultures. These culture-loaded words and expressions are the direct reflections of the unique features of Chinese culture. The translator needs to avoid errors and omissions in translation, especially when translating cultural information. Based on domestication and foreignization translation strategies, this article takes Howard Goldblatt's English translation of Mo Yan's Frog as the research object to explore the translation and effect of cultural-loaded words in the novel. The translator uses foreignization and domestication strategies to explain and convey these Chinese characteristics. It achieves faithfulness to the original text and flexibly handles culture-loaded words with Chinese characteristics, ensuring the attractiveness and affinity of the translated text. The research on the English translation of the Chinese culture-loaded words in the novel is helpful for foreign readers to understand and accept the culture with Chinese characteristics.

This article is an attempt to a new look at the role of coordinate phrases in communication. The object of the research is English proverbs as representations of coordinate syntactic connection and the subject is coordinate phrases that are realized in them. The article presents a brief history of the study of coordinate phrases in English. The author made a comparative analysis of the views of domestic and foreign linguists on the problem of distinguishing coordinate phrases in the language. She distinguishes such differential signs of coordinate phrases in English: the equality of components, the uniformity of the syntactic function of all components, the integrity of the structure, the implementation of the connection between components with the help of coordinate conjunctions, the order of words and intonations. The expression of coordinate phrases with the adversative conjunction but and cumulative conjunction and in English proverbs was studied. Their semantic space and formal-grammatical features also were analyzed. The author revealed about 12 specific realizations of the semantic volume of coordinate phrases with the cumulative conjunction and 5 variants of opposing semantic-syntactic relations with the adversative conjunction but in paremias. After the analysis, the author concludes that the peculiarity of coordinate phrases with conjunction but is their relatively larger semantic and grammatical dependence on the whole sentence – proverb than in the coordinate phrases with and, which can function independently without a sentence, although in some cases their conceptual fullness is also realized only in a general judgment. Coordinate phrases, being carriers of a certain semantic volume, act as key concepts of proverbs.

In this paper, the authors present a rationale and offer suggestions for how nursery rhymes could be used in the EFL classroom as well as how teachers and/or teachers in training might use nursery rhymes to enhance engagement in learning English. First, the authors define nursery rhymes, give a brief history of the origins, discuss the characteristics, make a case for using nursery rhymes with EFL learners, and last, offer practical suggestions for how nursery rhymes might be used in English as a Foreign (EFL) instruction. A list of accessible nursery rhyme resources is shared at the end. There are many categories in folklore, but the ones children often like the most and adults may remember well are nursery rhymes, fairy tales, fables, myths, legends, and folksongs. Each of these genres contributes in some way to the language development of children. Nursery rhymes in particular form one of the foundations of children’s as well as adults’ literary heritage. The simple rhythm and rhyme of the language, the often predictable structure of the narratives, and the appealing characters combine to produce memorable language models for young children (Cullinan & Galda, 1998; Temple, Martinez, & Yakota, 2011). Children delight in the opportunities to chant the catchy phrases, mimic the nonsense words, and recite the lines endlessly. This pleasure in nursery rhymes translates into developing many reading, writing and oral language skills such as naturally segmenting sounds in spoken words and playing with real and nonsense words. Additionally, young children appreciate the stories and verses for their rhythm, repetition, and rhyme. Their attention is focused on the fanciful language and imaginative nonsense. They learn basic story patterns, encounter vivid plots, develop a sense of theme, and meet intriguing characters that in turn become the stepping stones for subsequent literary education (Cullinan & Galda, 1998; Bodden, 2010).

The article deals with the theoretical and practical aspect of using «word clouds» to create activities when teaching philological disciplines aimed at the formation of the professional and communicative competency (development of language and professional competences) of foreign students of the medical faculty whose language of instruction is English. It is worth mentioning that the tasks created using the «Word Cloud» technology integrate work with lexical material (lexemes, phrases, sentences) and controlled as well as free practice on producing utterances on professional topics, dialogue simulation according to various models (doctor – hypochondriac patient, doctor – inattentive patient, doctor – talkative patient, doctor – silent patient, doctor – hostile patient), which contributes to the implementation of speech behaviour tactics to achieve the communication goal, demonstrating a good command of the techniques aimed at establishing professional contacts. It is stressed that foreign students established logical and semantic connections between lexemes / phrases / sentences when working with «word clouds». Interactive situations described in the research are close to the real conditions of the professional activity of future specialists in the medical field, which reproduce the possibility of extensive communication in standard situations, as well as in communication conditions with elements of unpredictability, accompanied by a visual demonstration of educational information using «word clouds». Special attention is focused on the didactic possibilities of «word clouds» for teaching and learning philological disciplines as they are used in multiple variations, namely: 1) as a lexical minimum for transforming aphorisms / questions / dialogical units / the topic and content of the lesson; 2) as an algorithm for modelling communicative situations in accordance with professional activity, for writing cinquains; 3) as a tool for creating associative series (anatomical terminology, clinical terminology, diseases, symptoms, drugs, medications, painful conditions, etc.), instructions that establish the rules for medical assistance to the victim (based on key words), terminological dictionaries to learn and consolidate medical vocabulary on educational topics; 4) as a visual tool that contributes to the cognitive activity of medical students in terms of mastering skills in perceptive and productive types of speech activity in educational and professional communication situations, as well as to the formation of their intellectual and creative abilities. The conclusion is drawn that working with word clouds» created by the teacher/students, in combination with communicative tasks, contributes to the accumulation of linguistic and communicative experience, expanding of the active vocabulary, acquiring of phonetic, lexical and grammatical skills.

The grammatical speaking skills, which are in the center of research analysis, manifest as the means of formation of communication competence. The knowledge of grammatical rules is the basis for language proficiency. Grammar performs an organizational role essential to students for structuring oral speech and understanding specializes texts in foreign language. The article analyzes the peculiarities of teaching basic syntactic structures of German language system, the methodologically appropriate presentation of which form grammatical speaking skills of the students. The need for paying closer attention to the formation and development of grammatical competence is substantiated by the fact that communication in foreign language is impossible without the command and proper use of words and phrases that comply with the norms of that language. Possessive and demonstrative pronouns are most difficult to digest for the Russian-speaking audience, due to discrepancy in their morphology and variety of meanings in the contacting languages, which necessitates the use of methodological techniques to alleviate the effect of linguistic interference.

The present study focuses on the challenges and strategies in translating Chinese or English prepositions into Shona. These two languages were chosen mainly because Chinese is becoming one of the most influential foreign language in Zimbabwe while, English is also one of the widely spoken foreign language in many countries. As already observed in some previous research, English and Chinese prepositions are captured in Shona phrases as morphemes. Words are the smallest elements that may be uttered in isolation with semantic or pragmatic content. This differs from morphemes which are defined as smallest units of meaning which cannot necessarily stand on their own. Research shows that Chinese and English prepositions do not have direct equivalent prepositions in Shona. We observed that Shona employs substitutes for Chinese and English prepositions, making translation of prepositions from other languages into Shona challenging. The article deals with the role of the cognitive approach in teaching students foreign vocabulary. The authors note the need to find new approaches to teaching a foreign language, since the development of electronic resources for both teachers and students faces the problem of organizing a significant amount of information in such a way as to track changes in the language: the appearance of neologisms, the development of new meanings in existing lexemes, the disappearance of various words and phrases. If changing grammatical constructions and their use is not critical, since it does not interfere with communication, then the constantly appearing new meanings of words and the expansion of existing meanings require not only attentiveness, but also certain skills for structuring in the mind in order to be further used in the corresponding situation. Based on the approach of cognitive linguistics and considering the most effective systems of exercises, the authors propose the use of the phenomenon of conceptualization in teaching vocabulary using the example of poly-semantic synonyms of the English language — the verbs feel and sense, which belong to the group of perceptual verbs.

Abstract:
The number of Indonesian novels translated into various foreign languages, especially English, requires a deeper study so that illegibility and unacceptableness will not occur in conveying the true meaning in the source language. This study examines the disclosure of the main character in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer which was translated into English This Earth of Mankind using Appraisal theory in Functional Systemic Linguistics (LSF) perspective which includes the culture of the source language in it. The results of the analysis show that there is a shift in appraisal or a shift in the type of appraisal in the depiction of the main character in the novel in the source language (Indonesian) with the depiction of the character in the target language (English) as seen in the change in the choice of expression (words or phrases) in the target language. This can be interpreted that in the world of translation, the choice of equivalent target language words will always change according to acceptance with the culture and norms that apply to the target language.

This article describes the translation into Chinese of phraseological units in «The book of words», which are the treasury of moral, philosophical, socio-political and intellectual-satirical thoughts of the greatest figure of Kazakh enlighteners, a brilliant poet and thinker, AbayKunanbaev. There are many mistakes when translating phraseological units in Abay's words of wisdom into foreign languages. There are several types. Firstly, when the translator perceives phraseological units as a lexical unit in the literal sense, and not as stable phrases, and translates them literally. Secondly, he is faced with the problem of selecting an equivalent in the target language. Thirdly, linguistic units used in a figurative sense are perceived as phraseological and are translated as so. In such cases, it we cannot say that the translation correctly conveys the content, meaning and artistic features of the original. The basic requirement is that the translator should strive to translate the phraseological units of the original text using the phraseological units of the target language.

The task of the work is to study the existing types of audiovisual means of training; analysis of the possibilities of using audiovisual means as a modern type of training. The object of the research is audiovisual media, through which while learning of the Russian language as a foreign language appropriate mastering of the material is carried out. Descriptive method and method of analysis of intelligence information are used. As a result of the research, the main methodological aspects of work with audiovisual means of education on Russian as foreign language lessons were highlighted. Conclusions: 1. The key stages of the work are chosen according to the scheme «task – viewing a film – task». 2. The task before watching a movie involves analyzing information about the movie. 3. The tasks after watching a movie include exercises on understanding of the content, as well as the consolidation and introduction of the new vocabulary in the broadcast. 4. The broadcast of feature films has both an emotional effect, and serves as an impetus for activating an additional stimulus in the next educational, practical, and creative activity. The analysis made it possible for us to determine that the film's review must include the appropriate purpose, everyday situations, clear dialogues, in which repetitive words and phrases that occur on the film repeatedly help to better remember the new vocabulary and as a result – the development of speech activity students The ability to compare read and seen causes excessive interest of students and activates them into cognitive activity. The feature film is not a universal admission, but it has certain prerogatives: it provides work of educational value, which helps in the process of intensive language proficiency; suppresses the psychological potential of the student (development of attention, memory, thinking); promotes the interconnection of various types of speech activity; takes into account peculiarities of language usage in various stylistic aspects, etc.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the establishment of listening strategies of senior students of a Ukrainian general secondary education institution who study German as a second foreign language. On the basis of student questionnaires, listening strategies of German as a second foreign language learners were identified. The study shows that mastering listening strategies contributes to the successful understanding of the audio message and the improvement of results during the performance of tasks for the development of this competence. The survey of the participants made it possible to identify the most frequent listening strategies used by high school students at three stages of the listening task: preparatory, while listening to the audio recording, and after completing the task. It was established that the most frequent listening strategies among high school students are strategies related to the functioning of memory mechanisms, as well as predictive strategies. In the process of perceiving and understanding speech by ear, high school students use the "top-down" approach, guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words based on the context and filling in information gaps based on familiar words and phrases. By performing the corresponding task, students regularly use strategies for predicting possible answer options in the presence of visual support for the printed text, recognizing grammatical constructions, predicting the content of the audio text, and their background knowledge.

The article deals with the issues of learning Russian as a foreign language using a communicative approach. In the Turkish linguistic literature much attention is paid to the study of language, methods of development of oral and written speech of students. Russian as a foreign language teaching methodology is based on the methodology of teaching foreign languages in General and Russian linguistics in particular, and provides opportunities for solving didactic problems. At the moment, the most effective way to learn Russian as a foreign language is, first of all, to teach students communication activities. The author pays special attention to the concept of “lexical-semantic group”, since the introduction of foreign language vocabulary as part of integral semantic associations will help students to assimilate the lexical richness of the language being studied. When teaching foreign students, considering a word in the structure of semantic associations of words will contribute not only to a deep understanding of its lexical meaning, but also to mastering typical word usage. As an argument, the didactic aspects of using the synonymic series of the lexeme “laugh”are considered. The lexical meaning of a word is manifested not only in a specific unit, but also in specific phrases and in certain stylistic boundaries. Therefore, in practical work with vocabulary, special attention should be paid to the lexical and grammatical compatibility of words, their stylistic characteristics. This requires working on the semantic equivalence and stylistic shades of phraseological combinations, as well as their functions in literary texts and colloquial speech. In fragments of a literary text, it is also advisable to work on the stylistic shades of the lexeme, in our case, “laught”. Specific examples of practical work on fragments of the text of the play “the Cherry orchard” by A. p. Chekhov are given. Generalized that work with various shades of meaning of lexemes, phraseological units of the synonymous row of the word “laugh” in the passages of literary text and spoken language, firstly, enables students to correctly use them in various speech situations, and second, deepening knowledge about the lexical richness of the Russian language, and provides materials for work on the comparative typology of Russian and Turkish languages. Abstract: The objective of this study is (1) to describe the choice of using foreign and local languages on the bussiness banners and advertisements in Banjarbaru and Martapura; and (2) to explain the reasons or the cause of using those languages. Data is obtained from purposive samples of business sign board found in Banjarbaru and Martapura city. Data analysis is using descriptive approach; it was describing the error from the sample. This research uses the rule of Indonesianization of foreign words and terms and AIDA theory (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action). The results of this research are (1) many Banjar and foreign languages are used in one business sign board; (2) three reasons of using foreign and local language: 1. latest icon are used to attract consumer’s attention to goods and services even though the icon is not relevant to Indonesian Language. 2. Using different languages deviate from grammar and uncommon word choice to attract consumer’s attention to the advertisement of product or business. 3. The use of local language is familiar to consumers of detail and services. This research shows that local phrases or terms are used to evoke consumer’s feeling. On the other hand, the use of English gives an educated impression to advertisers.

ABSTRACTSome observations on what words associated with Islam are in, and what might yet go into, current ELT dictionaries. Muslims constitute a vast number of speakers of English as a Second Language (ESL) and a Foreign Language (EFL). As a consequence, many expressions associated with Islam have been introduced into contemporary English and its dictionaries – both general and ESL/EFL. The present paper focuses on three particular works: the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE, 2003), the Macmillan English Dictionary (MED, 2002) and The New Oxford Dictionary of English (NODE, 1998), in order to discuss how Islamic terms are being used. It was found that few phrases or sentences are provided to illustrate such terms – even those in common use among English-speaking Muslims. The present paper therefore (1) suggests sample sentences for these terms, so that users of such dictionaries can set them in context, and (2) offers a list of common Islamic words for possible inclusion in future editions.

The main aspect of the formation of communicative speech competence of foreign students who master economic specialties is the expansion by applicants of higher education of their vocabulary with the necessary terminology vocabulary, a clear understanding of their stylistic and semantic shades of vocabulary, its practical assimilation taking into account the scope of application. The presented article focuses on the importance of considering the phenomenon of synonymy during the study of the language of the specialty and the need to expand the vocabulary, mastery of foreign languages, we are students of synonymous series of Ukrainian economic terminology, the formation of skills of distinguishing contextual shades of synonym values for use in professional communication. The formation of foreign students ‘skills and abilities to select the correct words in accordance with the context and communicative purpose, terms, phrases, phraseology and increase the level of linguistic, speech, communicative and, accordingly, professional competence. The study identified the key method and mastery of the synonymy phenomenon, such as: description of objects, phenomena, properties and features, as well as translation of phraseology, work with terminology dictionaries, etc. to use of synonyms in the Ukrainian language. The importance of developing a system of relevant tasks and exercises is determined, which will increase the effectiveness of the organization of work with Ukrainian vocabulary and professional terminology. The authors of the article give a number of practical tasks with various synonymous phenomena, which are expedient tooffer foreign students within the framework of the study of the discipline «Ukrainian as a foreign language».

This paper is a reflexive teaching study to investigate the use of discourse markers (DMs) in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom setting with non-native speakers. It is a qualitative and quantitative study that focuses on the teacher’s discourse by analysing the occurrences and frequencies in the use of DMs during interaction in class. The corpus was extracted from recordings made during four classes, and later documented through transcriptions. With items selected and categorized in an inventory, it was possible to explain the main functions of the markers used. With the aid of the AntConc© software, it was possible to visualize how the words and phrases of interest appeared in the corpus, in addition to their frequencies. The analysis reveals pragmatic awareness and the use, however restricted, of DMs in the building and organization of classroom interaction by teacher, which contributes to the coherence of his discourse.

The article deals with the views of a prominent scientist and a statesman Ivan Ohiienko on the process of formation of the Ukrainian literary language as the basis of spiritual and cultural growth of the people and the conditions that contribute to the development of the united literary language. The analysis of historical and linguistic aspects of the literary language development in Ukraine and the current language situ-ation in the early twentieth century, linguist’s advice on further development of his na-tive language is especially relevant in today’s socio-economic and political conditions in Ukraine, when bilingualism remains widespread in diff erent fi elds of communica-tion and the infl uence of other languages on Ukrainian language remains signifi cant. In the works «Grammatical and stylistic dictionary of Shevchenko’s language», «Our literary language», «History of the Ukrainian literary language» and others the re-searcher covers in detail the history of the origin and development of the Ukrainian language, as well as its state, in particular, spelling, vocabulary, grammatical struc-ture. The scientist analyses the language of writers -T. Shevchenko, Marko Vovchok, M. Rylsky, etc., the language of whose works became the basis for the development of the modern Ukrainian language, describes the requirements for it, characterizes the ways of its improvement. Among the main requirements for a good literary lan-guage Ivan Ohiienko calls the correctness, clarity, purity, richness and sonority of the language. To ensure the purity and other important features of the literary Ukrainian language, the scientist considers it necessary to avoid both obsolete, spatial words, as well as words and phrases, adopted from other languages. Russisms and Polonisms spoil the Ukrainian language, although, according to I. Ohiienko, some Russisms can be considered archaisms that were still preserved in the language at that time. Only the use of foreign words, which are not easy to replace with good Ukrainian equivalents, is allowed in the literary language. I. Ohiienko himself rarely uses foreign words, words, adopted from other languages, are very rare in his works, obviously, only those that denote new concepts, his language is characterized by clarity and purity
