AbstractAn important function of many copper-containing proteins is activation of O2 and subsequent substrate oxidation. The Cu (III) oxidation state is generally considered to be less accessible because of the highly positive Cu (III)/Cu (II) redox potentials with typical amino acid ligands. Here, we employ density functional (DFT) calculations to explore to what extent copper (III) may be accessed in a biologically-relevant coordination environment around a mononuclear copper center, by breaking the oxygen-oxygen bond in a copper-(hydro) peroxide complex. In agreement with previous findings by Solomon and co-workers on copper models with related coordination patterns, the formally high-valent copper complex produced by O-O bond cleavage appears to harbor both oxidizing equivalents on the ligands. The potential energy surface for such a reaction reveals that with the three-histidine binding motif at the copper, O-O bond cleavage is not impossible, but rather disfavored thermodynamically.

Abstract:
The duckweed Lemna minor was cultivated under laboratory conditions with the amount of incident light as limiting growth factor. The fronds were found to double every 3 days under the highest radiation intensity. The plants were exposed to Cu and Cr(III) solutions of 0.25 and 1.0 mg ℓ−1 during 10 days. The plants needed to adapt for app. 8 days before attaining maximal, steady state removal. Cr(III) was removed more efficiently from the solution (75-100% in terms of concentration or load reduction) than Cu (35-40%), the higher efficiencies pertaining to the more dilute solutions. Uptake rates were 80-333 and 250-667 mg d−1 m−2 for Cu and Cr(III), respectively. The plants accumulated 1-2 g metal kg−1 plant (dry weight) when exposed to the high concentration. Cu seemed toxic at 1.0 mg ℓ−1, resulting in plant mortality after 8 days.

Uniform spherical colloidal particles of mixed internal composition were obtained by aging at 90 °C solutions containing Cu(NO3)2 + Y(NO3)3 and Cu(NO3)2 + La(NO3)3, respectively, in the presence of urea. The molar ratio of metal ions in the solids precipitated from a given solution varied with the reaction time. After sufficiently long aging, this ratio corresponded closely to that in solutions in which the particles were generated. The original precipitates consisted of basic carbonates, which on calcination converted to mixed oxides of defined composition.
