The cooperative education begins with the very idea of cooperative. Aware of the peculiar characteristics of these organizational forms, where cooperation is proposed as an alternative to competition and individualism, the pioneers of the cooperative system themselves set that it will be one of the principles that define and support the cooperatives themselves. It transforms into one of the pillars of sustentation of the cooperative development, being constituent of the principles, as well as the explicit needs of these organizations. This work has as aim to discuss some aspects of the history, definitions and operation of cooperative education in the State of Minas Gerais- agricultural cooperatives and analyze the organizations that offer cooperative education. As methodological work for this analysis, there was first a survey, due to scarce available literature on the situation and to achieve more information about the problem, for it, it was directed questionnaires containing closed and open questions, addressed to all the agricultural cooperatives which it had access in the State. Second, it was performed a descriptive study of organizations that carry out cooperative education in the State of Minas Gerais, which were developed semi-structured interviews and documentary research. It is concluded that cooperative education is poorly developed in the Minas Gerais- agricultural cooperatives, although there is no single definition of what is the thematic or it should include. Therefore, the diversity of studied organizations allows the understanding of existence of multiple concepts of cooperative education, and also the observation of the variety of activities and public to whom theses activities are organized. It is possible to verify the presence of three focus areas - business management, social management and technical assistance to cooperatives members- in the contents that agricultural cooperatives identified as part of cooperative education. Among the organizations there are those that offer many of these contents, but with discrepancies, or sometimes with an emphasis of some contents and little attention given to the others. Yet, it is possible to visualize matches on the activities of cooperative education that are undertaken by these organizations, thereby causing duplicity of developed actions, however, not with the same approach. It´s verified the evidences of existence of a field, in Bourdieu´s way, multiple, diversified and in development, where diverse organizations with different profiles and purposes work.

O tema central desta tese é a Cooperativa ?

Abstract:
This research has as theme “A contribution for the structuring of the proceedings and cooperatives accounting demonstrations - applied to a working cooperative” and it shows a proposal of the structure changing not only the proceedings but also the accounting demonstrations of the cooperative society starting from the problem which this kind of society has been going through, that is, the taxation and contribution based on gross revenue, which doesn’t belong to the cooperative, besides the accounting presentation of themselves, that deal with the society “sui generis” related to its indocrinate aspect, it hasn’t been getting an accounting treatment appropriately. The research began with the origin synthesis and the cooperativism in the world and its forerunners, the formation and evolution of cooperative thought, its doctrine, its principles and rules, making possible the understanding of the function of this kind of society, its own doctrine aspects which makes the difference from the rest of the societies, besides getting to identify the transactions which occurs among them and their member of a cooperative, as well as the transaction of each one separatedly, including the possibilities of registering them. Afterwards it is achieved a study of the accounting system so that based on this theory we can think it over and name this revenues, expenses and costs of the cooperatives and their members, not to mention, at the same time define which are the correct accounting proceedings for these operations. With this, people searched for theorical referencial to back up the proposal of the changings in the proceedings as well as, by consequences, in the accounting demonstrations of the cooperative societies, which were achieved in a way to show their revenues and costs and also their members separatedly, making the demonstration of the results show along with the cooperative one and their corporate assets shows with its own way following the doctrine aspects of this kind of society. Finally, the proposal for the changing theorically studied, is tried and compared by means of its application in accounting demonstrations of a cooperative type of work.

Abstract:
The development of computer supported cooperative work has been used as the main solution to help groups of people that want to work in a cooperative environment and to obtain better and faster results than those attained by individual effort. The production of complex documents, as technical description guides of products, users manuals, tutorials, technical reports, papers, and so on, is a task that is inserted in this context, because it requires the collaboration of several specialists that work in the reserach and development of the product. According to this context this dissertation presents the design of an environment to support cooperative authoring to help a group of co-authors to build a hyperdocument, even though they are physically dispersed and interacting in an assyncronous mode. This environment offers a collection of services to support as the planning phase as the hyperdocument execution or writing phase. In the planning phase are discussed the main characteristics of the hyperdocument that will be produced like definition of the logical and presentation structures, the attribuition of activities among co-authors and the elaboration of a schedulling where are detailed the necessaries tasks and the foressened time to conclude them. To help this planning are foressen meetings support tools, decision support tools and also a set of tools to support hyperdocument structure criation together with the activities attributions of each co-authors in relation with the elements created in this structure. The execution or writing phase support tools emphatize the sharing of activities and informations among the co-authors as the support to their interactions. These tools will be based on the THOT structured hyperdocuments editor (developed at INRIA/CNRS research center - Grenoble, FR.) that will manager the editions functions. These tools were projected and designed in a prototype level as extensions to this editor which will allow its use in a shared manner for a group of co-authors. It is presented in this dissertation: i) the environment definided by an informal specification about the foressen functionalities, and; ii) the implemantion characteristics on a environment prototype.

Abstract:
Because cooperatives are a model of organization that promotes economic and social development, studies of solutions that increase its performance and reduce its problems are very important. Those solutions involve not only improvement in managing and financing areas, but mostly the participation and the cooperative education. Thus, the objective of this work was to observe the relation between cooperative education, participation, and satisfaction of the members of a cooperative, as a way to contribute for the creation of proposals and plans that improve the performance of the cooperatives. To achieve this aim, it was done an exploratory study, using a questionnaire in a case study of an agricultural cooperative. The results show that high level of formal education does not implies high level of cooperative education, which is related with participation in a positive way. It also turned out that the higher participation is not connected with lower satisfaction, as imagined, but with higher economic power. All this reinforce the idea that is necessary investments in cooperative education to improve participation and cooperative performance. Despite its limits, the research is a start to others in the same area and contributes to the development of an analysis model.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a shift in among Kentucky rural electric cooperatives in regard to their stance on economic development. With this has been the employment of electric cooperative staff to help attract new industries and forge relationships with other local economic development-geared groups to facilitate growth. Cooperative businesses have historically proved their resilience and deep-rooted connections within the communities they serve. In exploring two similar-sized electric cooperatives in Kentucky located in two very different regions of the state, considering socio-economic status, and interviewing key informants with local affiliated economic development groups, it becomes evident that electric cooperatives possess a great potential to serve as a catalyst for economic development within their respective service territories.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract In the last few years, location-awareness has emerged as a key technology for the future development of mobile, ad hoc and sensor networks. Thanks to location information, several network optimization strategies as well as services can be developed. However, the problem of determining accurate location, i.e. positioning, is still a challenge and robust algorithms are yet to be developed. In this thesis, we focus on the development of distance-based non-cooperative and cooperative algorithms, which is derived based on a non-parametric non- Bayesian framework, specifically with a Weighted Least Square (WLS) optimization. From a theoretic perspective, we study the WLS problem and establish the optimality through the relationship with a Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator. We investigate the fundamental limits and derive the consistency conditions by creating a connection between Euclidean geometry and inference theory. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form expression of a distance-model based Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB), as well as the formulas, that characterize information coupling in the Fisher information matrix. Non-cooperative positioning is addressed as follows. We propose a novel framework, namely the Distance Contraction, to develop robust non-cooperative positioning techniques. We prove that distance contraction can mitigate the global minimum problem and structured distance contraction yields nearly optimal performance in severe channel conditions. Based on these results, we show how classic algorithms such as the Weighted Centroid (WC) and the Non-Linear Least Square (NLS) can be modified to cope with biased ranging. For cooperative positioning, we derive a novel, low complexity and nearly optimal global optimization algorithm, namely the Range-Global Distance Continuation method, to use in centralized and distributed positioning schemes. We propose an effective weighting strategy to cope with biased measurements, which consists of a dispersion weight that captures the effect of noise while maximizing the diversity of the information, and a geometric-based penalty weight, that penalizes the assumption of bias-free measurements. Finally, we show the results of a positioning test where we employ the proposed algorithms and utilize commercial Ultra-Wideband (UWB) devices

Rauf, Zahid. "Multi-user Non-Cooperative and Cooperative Systems with HARQ." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8708.

Full text
Abstract:
The performance and reliability of wireless communication links can be improved by employing multiple antennas at both ends, thereby creating multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. However, once multiple co-channel users are added to the system it can be difficult to provide as many receive antennas as transmit antennas, resulting in a so-called overloaded (rank-deficient) system. Under overloaded conditions, maximum likelihood (ML) detection works well, but its exponential complexity prohibits its use and suboptimal linear detectors perform poorly. In this thesis, new signal processing techniques for multi-user overloaded systems using hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocols are investigated. The HARQ retransmissions are used to form virtual receive antennas, which can efficiently transform an overloaded system into a critically loaded system (i.e. a system with an equal number of transmit and receive antennas). In the first part of the thesis, a multi-user non-cooperative overloaded system is considered. At first, it is demonstrated that the suboptimal linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector leads to significant performance degradation compared to an ML detector for such systems. To overcome this drawback, two multi-user transmission schemes are proposed that work well under overloaded conditions. The proposed schemes allow us to apply linear multi-user detection (MUD) algorithms without requiring additional antennas or hardware chains. Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrate that the proposed schemes can result in significant gains in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) and dropped packet performance. In the second part, the performance of multiple HARQ processes for a two-hop multi-source multi-relay decode-and-forward (DF) relaying network with no direct link are analyzed. Dealing with multiple HARQ processes at each relay, a retransmission scheme is proposed that utilizes virtual antennas to achieve increased receive diversity and improved throughput compared to traditional orthogonal (time division) retransmissions. A novel forwarding strategy at the relay(s) to destination link is proposed with the objective of further improving throughput. Finally, the end-to-end outage probability and throughput efficiency of the proposed retransmission and forwarding schemes are found analytically and confirmed with Monte-Carlo simulations.

Abstract:
In this research Pythagorean Hodograph based path planning and camera based cooperative perception are investigated separately and then these two entirely separate areas (Path Planning and Perception) are integrated for the application in online pop-up obstacle locating & avoidance and moving target tracking & surveillance in dynamic environments. The path planning is integrated with the cooperative perception to deal with the challenges posed by the dynamic environment. The aim of this integration is to achieve maximum autonomy required to execute a mission autonomously by multiple fixed wings UAVs in a dynamic environment. During the mission execution, the cooperating UAVs start from some initial location in the operating environment and finish at some final location while trying to achieve the mission’s objectives in a cooperative way. Naturally planning a feasible (safe and flyable) path for each participating UAV from initial position to a final location becomes a compulsory task of mission planning. For fixed wing UAVs flyable paths mean, paths which have tangential and curvature continuity and which obey the kinematic and dynamic constraint of the UAVs. In this research an algorithm based on Pythagorean hodograph curves is developed and used for planning feasible (safe and flyable) paths. The Pythagorean hodograph (PH) yields paths of exact length having tangential and curvature continuity. These continuous paths are made flyable for the UAVs by imposing the kinematic constraints of the UAVs. These constraints are imposed by the curvature and torsion manipulation of the planned paths. The safety of these paths is ensured by making it free of inter collisions between the vehicles and collisions with the known obstacles. These feasible paths are known as the initial paths or reference trajectories. In this research the operating environment is assumed to be dynamic in which changes are taking place at all times. Each UAV taking part in the mission is equipped with a vision sensor to perceive these changes continuously in a cooperative way. As the mission is assumed to be executed in day light, therefore light intensity video camera is used as a vision sensor. A perception algorithm for locating an object cooperatively in 3D is developed in this research. This algorithm is based on the optimization of errors in target position acquired by the on board camera. The algorithm is used by the cooperative perception system for optimal position estimation of the object in the scene. The target position information between the participating UAVs is exchanged through wireless communication for data fusion purposes. After developing efficient algorithms for path planning and cooperative perception, the two algorithms are integrated to be used in reactive obstacle avoidance and target tracking. During the mission, when the UAVs start their flight on the reference trajectories generated by the path planning algorithm, the perception algorithm comes into action. During the travel on these paths if the perception system of any of the UAVs detects an interrupting obstacle which was not known a priori in the map, then the exact location of this obstacle is determined with the help of the perception algorithm in a cooperative way. Using the location of the interrupting obstacle determined by the perception algorithm the path planning algorithm plans an evasive manoeuvre for the corresponding UAV to avoid it. After avoiding the obstacle the UAV comes back to its reference trajectory as soon as possible. In the operation of surveillance and tracking during the mission, the onboard perception algorithm locates an object of interest dynamically and the Pythagorean hodograph (PH) path planner uses this location to generate the paths for the cooperating UAVs to keep in close proximity of the target. In this case the close proximity of the target means to follow the moving target in such a way that it remains in the fields of views of the UAVs cameras at any time. By this integration of path planning and cooperative perception the continuous surveillance and tracking of the target was made possible even when the individual UAV experiences failure. During this research the mid flight obstacle locating & avoidance, and target surveillance & tracking have been successfully achieved by the integration of the path planning and cooperative perception. The purpose of this integration is to achieve an enhanced autonomy for the cooperating group of UAVs to increase the probability of their survival in mission being executed in dynamic environments.

Abstract:
This research evaluates the contribution of the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE) in creating new markets for local producers to the experience of cooperative COOPAFI the municipality of Capanema, an organization that is a reference in many strategies to access the institutional market to enable the marketing of products of its affiliated farmers, but: Did the PNAE positively impacted the revenue from these farmers? Where and how the farmers to sell their products if they were not associated with the cooperative? Therefore, the first hypothesis is that farmers who access the PNAE in the municipality of Capanema had effective increase income. And the second is that farmers would have no other means to achieve market in the local / regional market in close or similar amount if they were not members. This way will be sought to understand the role of PNAE in strengthening family agriculture and its organizations. In particular, efforts will be made: (1) investigate the reasons for accession and farmers remain in the PNAE and understand how farmers were inserted in PNAE; (2) verify that the PNAE helped improve the living conditions of the population involved; (3) identify which foods purchased by COOPAFI - Capanema in meeting their local / regional demands to understand the motivations and perceptions thereof forward the possibility of generating income not only in the short term; (4) describe the socioeconomic profile of participants PNAE farmers and the influence of this policy on the integration of family farmers in new markets. The survey found an effective increase in revenue among the cooperative, which highlights the role of PNAE in strengthening family farming, however, was not possible to characterize the extreme dependence of farmers to the cooperative, but an insert into new markets that led to the diversification production; increase in the quantity produced; the qualification of the farmer to improve the quality of products; the specialization of labor in the agricultural industry and the knowledge of new marketing channels.

Abstract: Mondragón Cooperative Corporation (MCC) - through the institutions and rules created since its beginning (in the 1950's) and, since 1990, through the investments in new production plants or alliances with other companies outside Spain, including Brazil - represents nowadays the biggest production cooperative enterprise in the world. As a business, Mondragón's internationalization is a success, however, it exposes a lot of contradictions in relation to the cooperative ideals and principles. We have researched Mondragón's internationalization in a branch installed in Brazil comparing it to its head office in Spain and from this, we considered that MCC internationalization process and the ways it is organized outside the Basque Country is a pragmatic and economical choice, which can enable the competition among the cooperatives in the market, besides keeping and funding its solidary structures in Basque Country. Nevertheless, this international acting degenerates the cooperative ideals since it inserts the division between capital and work, through the wide use and exploration of wage labor

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to examine the current situation of university libraries in the GCC countries identifying the problems and difficulties being faced by them and suggest means and ways by which an effective library cooperation may solve these problems. A general description of library cooperation is given, including that in developing countries and in the Arab world. Apart from literature sources the material for this research was obtained by questionnaire, personal visits to university libraries and some related research institutions in the countries concerned and by some personal observations and experience. The development of library and information services in general in the CCC countries is examined, but particularly various features of university libraries, from administration to user services. University library resources, technical services, and existing cooperative activities are also discussed in detail. There are some major issues which are related to library cooperation such as financial resources, adequacy of library collections, collection development practices, uniform standards of technical processing of library materials, availability of bibliographical apparatus and experienced professional manpower. The analysis of these issues brought out factors which should motivate individual libraries to engage in a library cooperation and resource sharing network. There is no practical or well organised resource sharing programme among university libraries in the GCC countries, even the existing marginal activities are not satisfactory to all university libraries concerned. This is mainly due to the absence of a well organised central agency which should take the lead to implement a well developed cooperative model for library cooperation in the region. The various professional meetings which have been organised at a regional level emphasised the importance of establishing effective cooperative links among university libraries in the Gulf region, but little implementation of these proposals have resulted so far. With the current political situation in the Gulf region and with the limitation on financial resources, the need for effective library cooperation is emphasised now more than ever before. Therefore, this research makes some practical recommendations emphasising the need for a central agency responsible for library cooperation programmes and proposing a model for an effective resource sharing network among university libraries in the GCC countries in the hope of improving the existing situation.

Agricultural cooperatives have been widely promoted as a vehicle for smallholder agricultural development in South Africa. As a result, agricultural co-operative registrations in South Africa are increasing. However, research suggests that South African co-operatives have generally not been effective, successful and functional. This study has investigated the challenges facing agricultural cooperatives in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. It is expected that identification of these elements may enable institutions that offer support to cooperatives make better decisions to improve primary agricultural cooperatives support. Understanding of these elements could inform the efforts for members of cooperatives to achieve their set objectives and thus improve agriculture cooperative, employability, functionality and profitability. A case study of the Nkomamonta Agricultural Primary Cooperative in the Greater Tzaneen Municipalities is used. It is composed of fifteen agricultural cooperative which were purposively selected for the study because they were nearby, they are a pilot agricultural cooperative in the municipality and which are also not functioning as expected. The sample also included the purposively selected members, customers of these agricultural cooperative, workers, Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Local SEDA and LIBSA to explore the differences and provide insight to the knowledge, opinions and challenges that are facing agricultural cooperatives. One-on-one interviews were carried out with co-operative members as well as focus group discussions with customers, members of the cooperatives, workers, the Municipal officials, SEDA and LIBSA. A framework for analysing the challenges agricultural cooperatives with reference to the Nkomamonta cooperative case study was developed using literature of objectives of agricultural cooperatives, challenges which were identified by other researchers and success factors of smallholder agriculture. According to this study, farmers’ activities are hampered by a number of constraints. Production capability of the fifteen primary cooperatives is hampered by resource constraints such as lack of access to land (in one cooperative), machinery and equipment, finances and information relevant to production. Marketing, transportation, poor infrastructure and the elderly age of some cooperative members and issues related to free-rider syndrome were part of the problems that were identified. Low capability of some of the fifteen cooperatives to mobilise resources, use the limited resources available and low capability to manage institutional arrangements rendered the cooperatives ineffective in achieving their set objectives. The study recommends strategies for ensuring that the challenges facing agricultural cooperatives are minimised to better their services in the community. These include strategies for addressing internal and external issues affecting the cooperatives. Direct intervention from government is recommended to improve production through revising land allocation systems which made Kulani Agricultural Cooperative not to have land for growing crops. Jerry Jeff and Nwa Rex went out of action for eight months due to renovation of neighbourhood inorganic farms by the Department of Agriculture. Another strategy would entail improving extension services and follow up and strict monitoring of effective use of government resources provided to farmers. Responding and action taking when disaster has struck the agricultural cooperative by Government is also a plausible strategy. Access and training to relevant technologies to improve the processing and packaging capabilities of cooperatives should improve. Marketing and management activities should be supported through provision of improved infrastructure and relevant training. Farmers themselves should consider assisting one another especially regarding land issues as it was discovered that 67 hectares lay unutilised while the farmer next door needed land. Farmers should also engage in value added activities, and improve marketing programs and cost-effective distribution mechanisms.

Abstract:
Modern design projects tend to be more and more complex and multi-disciplinary in terms of both organization and process. Knowledge management enables a company to reuse its experience in order to improve organizational learning. Several knowledge engineering methods are defined to obtain expert knowledge. However, no knowledge approaches have succeeded to extract cooperative knowledge due to its particular features: cooperative knowledge is produced in cooperative activities; no single actor can claim to explain globally the cooperative activity with no personal bias. How can we reuse cooperative design project knowledge is the new challenge. In my thesis “knowledge discovery from cooperative activities, application on design projects”, the term “knowledge discovery” is redefined according to knowledge engineering approaches, and guided by the spirit of knowledge management. The nature of cooperative knowledge is studied and a novel approach of classification is proposed to discover knowledge from cooperative activities, and it is further elaborated in the context of design projects, examples on software engineering, eco-design and mechanical design are demonstrated

The present study describes the diverse socioeconomic aspects that contribute to family income increase of cooperative members at the Cooperativa Agropecuária do Cariri Coapecal. The idea of cooperative firstly appeared in the nineteenth century when the first cooperative was founded in Rochdale, Manchester, Britain in response to the Industrial Revolution advance that had introduced the steam machine to replace manpower available then. The method used in the research was a case study including a descriptive and bibliographic field survey. A population of 900 cooperative members were involved in the study, being 187 out of them used as a sample for the investigation. A questionnaire involving three aspects was used to collect the data in the survey. The first aspect containing 8 questions related to the socioeconomic profile of cooperative members; the second with 6 questions referred to property, being the third aspect with 9 questions about cattle raising. The whole questionnaire comprised of 23 closed questions aiming to estimate the increase rate in the family income of the people surveyed. Finally, after compiling and interpreting the variables of the research, the study showed there was, indeed, an increase in the family income of those members, and it confirmed that cooperativeness is an effective alternative to reach this goal. Thus, it is expected that cooperative managers ponder over this reality and that they be willing to meet their members´ requests.

Competencies of organisations are of vital importance to them, because they represent the drivers of competitiveness of organisation. Resource-based theory as the underlying theory and competence-based-view in particular highlight competencies´ problem-solving attribute. This is especially relevant for banks, confronted with challenges, linked to technological developments. Currently, banks are faced considerable difficulties due to the financial and economic crisis. Credit cooperatives, on the other hand, have successfully handled the challenges posed by technological developments and also seem to be dealing with the current Finally, the results of each step and the rationale of the identified competencies, including the so-called ´activation power´, are presented. Because of this research´s intensity and extension, a valuable framework to identify, analyse and describe the competencies of credit cooperatives can be proposed. Furthermore, the profound insights into the area of investigation, combined with the interesting aspects, linked to the case-study-bank, allowed the researcher to develop additional correlated propositions. Managers of credit cooperatives as well as of other banks can profit from this study. Understanding the basic rules may enhance the possibility of transfetring the results and consequently to discover thus far unexplored potentials and new ideas for navigating through the current challenging situation. crisis rather well. This study, therefore, aims at identifying, analysing and describing competencies of a credit cooperative, that may potentially contribute to ´solve the problems´, banks are continuously faced with. The complexity and difficulty of identifying competencies necessitates the application of an interpretive paradigm to this study, which enables the researcher, as well as managers of CCs and banks to ´dig deeper into´ and better understand the area of investigation and thus identify, analyse and describe competencies. An extensive literature research, including the elucidation of specific aspects, was conducted and subsequently, a concept developed that facilitated the structuring of the data gained from the empirical study. This empirical study builds on a comprehensive case study, which involved an especially interesting credit cooperative in Germany. The concept, developed from the theoretical research derived from the literature, was applied to the collected data. The applied research technique resulting from the interpretive paradigm supports the significance of the results, as it allows to a step-by-step and thus better understanding of the ´rules of the game´ prevalent in the case-study bank.

Abstract:
Interval uncertainty affects our decision making activities on a daily basis making the data structure of intervals of real numbers more and more popular in theoretical models and related software applications. Natural questions for people or businesses that face interval uncertainty in their data when dealing with cooperation are how to form the coalitions and how to distribute the collective gains or costs. The theory of cooperative interval games is a suitable tool for answering these questions. In this thesis, the classical theory of cooperative games is extended to cooperative interval games. First, basic notions and facts from classical cooperative game theory and interval calculus are given. Then, the model of cooperative interval games is introduced and basic definitions are given. Solution concepts of selection-type and interval-type for cooperative interval games are intensively studied. Further, special classes of cooperative interval games like convex interval games and big boss interval games are introduced and various characterizations are given. Some economic and Operations Research situations such as airport, bankruptcy and sequencing with interval data and related interval games have been also studied. Finally, some algorithmic aspects related with the interval Shapley value and the interval core are considered.

Abstract:
In this thesis project, we consider the cooperative control of multi-agent systems under limited communication between the individual agents. In particular, quantized values of the relatives states between neighboring agents are used as the control parameters for each agent. As an introductory part, the theoretical framework for the distributed consensus problem under perfect communication is reviewed with the focus on the system stability and convergence. We start from the common problem setup that single integrator agents with a static tree communication topology, where the stability constraints and convergence guaranty are derived for dierent quantization models: uniform, logarithmic and dynamic. Then the conclusions are extended to switching tree topologies, tree topologies with disconnected time intervals and nally general undirected graphs. The control performance like  onvergence rate and the area of convergence set are compared between systems with and without quantization eects, and also among the systems with dierent quantizers. Furthermore, similar techniques are applied to other system dynamics with quantized control inputs. We investigate additional constraints on the stability of the corresponding discrete time system due to the presence of quantization eects. Explicit upper bounds on the sampling time that guarantee convergence are derived. As expected, the sampling frequency has to be increased accordingly under dierent quantization models. The multi-agent system composed of second-order agents under general undirected communication graphs is also taken into account with quite dierent analytical tools. Finally we switch to an alternative model that takes the relative quantized states as control parameters instead. Distinctive convergence properties are found between these two models and detailed comparisons are made. Throughout this report, all results obtained are supported by numerical simulations.

Almualim, Anwar Hassan Ali. "Dynamic cooperative investment." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/39146.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we develop dynamic cooperative investment schemes in discrete and continuous time. Instead of investing individually, several agents may invest joint capital into a commonly agreed trading strategy, and then split the uncertain outcome of the investment according to the pre-agreed scheme, based on their individual risk-reward preferences. As a result of cooperation, each investor is able to get a share, which cannot be replicated with the available market instruments, and because of this, cooperative investment is usually strictly profitable for all participants, when compared with an optimal individual strategy. We describe cooperative investment strategies which are Pareto optimal, and then propose a method to choose the most ‘fair’ Pareto optimal strategy based on equilibrium theory. In some cases, uniqueness and stability for the equilibrium are justified. We study a cooperative investment problem, for investors with different risk preferences, coming from expected utility theory, mean-variance theory, mean-deviation theory, prospect theory, etc. The developed strategies are time-consistent; that is the group of investors have no reasons to change their mind in the middle of the investment process. This is ensured by either using a dynamic programming approach, by applying the utility model based on the compound independence axiom. For numerical experiments, we use a scenario generation algorithm and stochastic programming model for generating appropriate scenario tree components of the S&P 100 index. The algorithm uses historical data simulation as well as a GARCH model.

Abstract:
In the last few years, there have been a lot of interests in wireless ad-hoc networks as they have remarkable commercial and military applications. Such wireless networks have the benefit of avoiding a wired infrastructure. However, signal fading is a severe problem for wireless communications particularly for the multi-hop transmissions in the ad-hoc networks. Cooperative communication has been proposed as an effective way to improve the quality of wireless links. The key idea is to have multiple wireless devices at different locations cooperatively share their antenna resources and aid each other’s transmission. In this thesis, we develop effective algorithms for cooperative wireless ad-hoc networks, and the performance of cooperative communication is measured based on various criteria, such as cooperative region, power ratio and end-to-end performance. For example, the proposed interference subtraction and supplementary cooperation algorithms can significantly improve network throughput of a multi-hop routing. Comprehensive simulations are carried out for all the proposed algorithms and performance analysis, providing quantitative evidence and comparison over other schemes. In our view, the new cooperative communication algorithms proposed in this research enable wireless ad-hoc networks to improve radio unreliability and meet future application requirements of high-speed and high-quality services with high energy efficiency. The acquired new insights on the network performance of the proposed algorithms can also provide precise guidelines for efficient designs of practical and reliable communications systems. Hence these results will potentially have a broad impact across a range of related areas, including wireless communications, network protocols, radio transceiver design and information theory.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the studies on the Cooperative Teleoperation Systems. The literature on cooperative teleoperation did not take into account control architectures composed of pairs of wave-based bilateral teleoperators operating in a shared environment. In this work The author two cooperative control schemes based on wave variables by considering two pairs of single-master/single-slave devices collaborating to carry out operations in a shared remote environment are proposed. Such architectures have been validated both with simulations and experimental tests. Ch. 2 introduces a description of the two control architectures proposed and presents some simulation results where the cooperative teleoperation systems evolve in free space and in contact with a stiff wall. In the Ch. 3 some experimental results which confirm the positive results of the control schemes are illustred. Such results have been achieved by using a prototype custom built at Laboratory of Automaiton and Robotics of University of Bologna, which is also illustrated in this chapter. In Ch. 4 the problem of defining proper tools and procedures for an analysis, and possibly a comparison, of the performances of cooperative teleoperation systems is addressed. In particular, a novel generalization of criteria adopted for classical (i.e. one master-one slave) teleoperators is presented and illustrated on the basis of the force-position and the position-position cooperative control schemes proposed in Ch. 2, both from a transparency and stability point of view, and by assuming a null time delay in the communication channel.

The emergence of associations and cooperatives of recyclable waste collectors constitute an important initiative, since they involve both financial improvements and minimizing the vulnerability of waste pickers. This research aimed to analyze the experience of cooperativism and the empowerment of the cooperative. The research was conducted together with the Environment cooperative located in the region of Estrutural, Brasília-DF. The correlation between the experience of cooperativism and the empowerment of the cooperative was analyzed from a theoretical and methodological perspective. For this purpose, the exploratory and descriptive research strategy was used by, using interview and participant observation as techniques for collecting data. The results indicated the existence of empowerment processes in the different levels studied but with limits. Such workers have sought social recognition, through attempts to make visible the activities of sorting and recycling of waste and to establish themselves as a specific occupational category, through their political organization, which contributes to their empowerment, individually and collectively. However, there are limits to individual empowerment, since the collectors benefit from the guarantees of a cooperative, but with restrictions, due to non-compliance with certain cooperative principles.

Abstract:
Future wireless networks will combine multiple radio technologies and subsystems, possibly managed by competing network providers. For such systems it may be advantageous to let the end nodes (terminals) make some or all of the resource management decisions. In addition to reducing complexity and costs, increasing redundancy, and facilitating more timely decisions; distributed resource sharing regimes can decouple the individual subsystems. Decoupled subsystems could be desirable both because competing operators can be business-wise separated and because it allows new technologies to be added (removed) in a modular fashion. However, distributed regimes can also lead to “selfish” wireless nodes who only try to maximize their own performance. The first part of this dissertation studies if selfish nodes can make efficient use of wireless resources, using multiaccess and network layers as examples. The related problems are formulated as noncooperative games between nodes. To maintain tractability nodes are confined to simple strategies that neither account for future payoffs nor allow for coordination. Yet, it is demonstrated that selfish nodes can achieve comparable performance to traditional protocols. These results should be interpreted as an argument in favor of distributed regimes. The second part of this dissertation evaluates the effects of multi-provider network architectures where users can roam freely across all networks. From a supply side perspective the benefits are improved path gain statistics and the fact that different networks may have non-overlapping busy hours. Several network configurations are analyzed and it is shown that cooperation between symmetric providers can yield significant capacity gains for both downlink and uplink; even if the providers have nearly collocated sites. When the providers have different site densities the gains from cooperation are reduced and the provider with a sparse network always gains more from cooperating. This suggests that initially, voluntary cooperation may be limited to some special cases. Lastly, the architecture is analyzed in a context where the providers compete for users on a per session basis by offering access at different prices. Although such architectures currently only exist in a few special cases, they could emerge in domestic markets where the costs to switch and search for new networks are low. Based on a game theoretic formulation it is shown that a competitive market for wireless access can be advantageous for both users and providers. The results presented suggest that the advantages of cooperation of competing providers occur in more than just a few cases.

Alabri, Said. "Distributed Extremum Seeking and Cooperative Control for Mobile Cooperative Communication Systems." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5596.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, a distributed extremum seeking and cooperative control algorithm is designed for mobile agents to disperse themselves optimally in maintaining communication quality and maximizing their coverage. The networked mobile agents locally form a virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system, and they cooperatively communicate among them by using the decode and forward cooperative communication technique. The outage probability is used as the measure of communication quality, and it can be estimated real-time. A general performance index balancing outage probability and spatial dispersion is chosen for the overall system. The extremum seeking control approach is used to estimate and optimize the value of the performance index, and the cooperative formation control is applied to move the mobile agents to achieve the optimal solution by using only the locally-available information. Through the integration of cooperative communication and cooperative control, network connectivity and coverage of the mobile agents are much improved when compared to either non-cooperative communication approaches or other existing control results. Analytical analysis is carried out to demonstrate the performance and robustness of the proposal methodology, and simulation is done to illustrate its effectiveness.

Abstract:

This dissertation presents a case study of collaborative research through design with Floracaching, a gamified mobile application for citizen science biodiversity data collection. One contribution of this study is the articulation of collaborative research through design (CRtD), an approach that blends cooperative design approaches with the research through design methodology (RtD). Collaborative research through design is thus defined as an iterative process of cooperative design, where the collaborative vision of an ideal state is embedded in a design. Applying collaborative research through design with Floracaching illustrates how a number of cooperative techniques—especially contextual inquiry, prototyping, and focus groups—may be applied in a research through design setting. Four suggestions for collaborative research through design (recruit from a range of relevant backgrounds; take flexibility as a goal; enable independence and agency; and, choose techniques that support agreement or consensus) are offered to help others who wish to experiment with this new approach. Applying collaborative research through design to Floracaching yielded a new prototype of the application, accompanied by design annotations in the form of framing constructs for designing to support mobile, place-based citizen science activities. The prototype and framing constructs, which may inform other designers of similar citizen science technologies, are a second contribution of this research.

Context. Video games are a big entertainment industry. Many video games let players play against or together. Some video games also make it possible for players to play against or together with computer controlled players, called bots. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used to create bots. Objectives. This thesis aims to implement cooperative behaviors between two bots and determine if the behaviors lead to an increase in win ratio. This means that the bots should be able to cooperate in certain situations, such as when they are attacked or when they are attacking. Methods. The bots win ratio will be tested with a series of quantitative experiments where in each experiment two teaming bots with cooperative behavior will play against two teaming bots without any cooperative behavior. The data will be analyzed with a t-test to determine if the data are statistical significant. Results and Conclusions. The results show that cooperative behavior can increase performance of two teaming Real Time Strategy bots against a non-cooperative team with two bots. However, the performance could either be increased or decreased depending on the situation. In three cases there were an increase in performance and in one the performance was decreased. In three cases there was no difference in performance. This suggests that more research is needed for these cases.

The objective of the thesis is to validate the criteria of Johnson and Johnson (1992) as evaluation indicators of cooperative attitudes.
We propose to define, monitor and assess new performance tools by observing, analyzing and assessing as 6-year-old boys and girls develop cooperative attitudes through activities proposed by their teachers, with the goal of evaluating, in a new application context, the indicators cited in Johnson and Johnson (1992).To focus on the research objectives we have taken into account a triple perspective: that of the teaching staff, of the students and of the activities. We present the analysis of the data from the different instruments, in accordance with the aims set out in the thesis on two levels of analysis and with indicator validation.
Monitoring the contributions from the different instruments has allowed us to perform a triangulation of the data, which guarantees the reliability of the indicators and allows us to reach the conclusions mentioned in the last chapter.

The main purpose of this study was to identify the major obstacles to cooperation as perceived by school library media specialists in the state of Mississippi and to determine if members of the Coastal Mississippi Library Cooperative (CMLC) believe that there are fewer obstacles to cooperation than do non-members. The secondary purpose was to evaluate the CMLC to some extent to determine if success was achieved through organization when defined by the variables, planning, governance, funding, communication, administration, and evaluation. The population of the study was all of the librarians (academic, public, school, and special) in the six-county area which comprises the CMLC, and a random sample of public school librarians throughout the remainder of the state. All of the school librarians were sent a questionnaire that requested their responses to statements of barriers to cooperation. All of the librarians in the CMLC region were sent a questionnaire to obtain their perceptions of participation in the CMLC. Pour librarians, members of the CMLC, were Interviewed to obtain information on the organizational factors of the CMLC. Data received from school library media specialists were submitted to various statistical tests. The Chi-Square statistic was used on the demographic portion of the questionnaire, which revealed that four of the variables and the dependent variable, membership in the CMLC, were significantly different. A t-test performed on the barriers to cooperation section produced no significant differences between the member and non-member responses. The perceptions of participation in the CMLC data revealed that there were differences among the four library systems (academic, public, school, and special) involved, but most of the respondents considered the CMLC to be successful. Data from the interview also revealed that the CMLC was successful in its organization. Due to the overall low response to the survey, the stated hypotheses could not be accepted; however, many of the findings and implications should be useful in helping to eliminate several obstacles to cooperation in Mississippi.
