Abstract:
Sedimentological analysis of cored sections within the Merrimelia Formation (basal Gidgealpa Group, Cooper Basin, South Australia) reveals a complex glacigenic environment, including glaciolacustrine, deltaic, shorezone, fluvial, aeolian and other associated terrestrial facies (over 20 different facies have been identified). These facies are observed within terminoglacial and proglacial environments and interfinger laterally and vertically constantly throughout the Merrimelia Formation, exhibiting rapid environment change related to the position of ice sheet. Detailed sedimentological and petrographical (Cubitt 1998) analysis suggests that Tirrawarra sandstone-type sandstones facies belong within the Merrimelia depositional realm. Provenance data (Cubitt 1998) indicates that the lithic component of the Tirrawarra Sandstone (sensu stricto), is sourced from reworked Merrimelia coeval depositional facies. It is proposed that the fluvial sandstones of the Merrimelia Formation are part of the same fluvial deposystem as the Tirrawarra Sandstone (sensu stricto) as the two sandstone sequences are the natural progression of coarsening sediment as more detritus was released from melting glaciers during deglaciation. It is suggested that there no longer remain any sedimentological, stratigraphical or petrographical (Cubitt 1998) reasons why the Tirrawarra Sandstone (sensu stricto) and the Merrimelia Formation glaciofluvial sandstones should not be grouped together as Tirrawarra-type facies within the Merrimelia glacigenic domain. Facies architecture across the basin on both field and basin wide scales has identified two regional lacustrine episodes, both of which are followed by a period of lacustrine basin clastic infill. Such cycles represent ice advance and retreat, allowing two deglaciation phases and one ice advance phase to be identified.

Maynard, Annastacia Lin. "Copper isotope compositions of Cenozoic mafic-intermediate rocks of the Northern Great Basin and Snake River plain (USA)." Thesis, Kansas State University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/32881.

Abstract:

Mid-Miocene epithermal Au-Ag ores of the northern Great Basin USA are related to magmatism associated with the inception of the Yellowstone hotspot. The geochemical chemical connection between these ores and spatially and temporally related volcanism is not well understood, but has been suggested (Kamenov, 2007; Saunders et al., 2015). These Cu- and Pb- isotope studies show that the ore and associated gangue minerals have different sources of Pb, which supports evidence that the metal(loids) originate from a deep magmatic source (Saunders et al., 2008). Cu isotopes as a tool for exploring linkages between ore deposits and related volcanic rocks is a new and evolving field. A suite of mid-Miocene Northern Great Basin (NGB) and Snake River Plain (SRP) volcanic rocks was analyzed by aquaregia leach for their δ⁶⁵Cu compositions. These samples have all been previously characterized and include basalts, trachybasalt, basaltic andesites, and basaltic trachyandesites that are representative of regional flood basalt magmatism and younger basalt eruptions in central Idaho. Included are rocks from the Santa Rosa-Calico volcanic field, NV (e.g., Buckskin-National district); Owyhee Mountains, ID (Silver City District); Midas, NV region, near Jarbidge, NV; and a locality proximal to Steens Mountain, OR. Also included are two Pleistocene basalts from the central Snake River plain unequivocally related to the Yellowstone hotspot volcanism (McKinney Basalt and Basalt of Flat Top Butte), and one Eocene basalt from the Owyhee Mountains that is related to pre-hotspot arc volcanism. International rock standards ranging from ultramafic to intermediate were also analyzed in this study for comparison. Our new δ⁶⁵Cu data greatly expands the range of known Cu isotopic compositions for basalts, with values ranging from -0.84‰ to +2.61‰. These values overlap with the δ⁶⁵Cu of regional ores, further suggesting a link between the source(s) of the ores and the NGB rocks. The range of δ⁶⁵Cu values also overlaps with mantle rock values, suggesting that the Cu isotopic composition may be a signature derived from the mantle source. Fractionation mechanisms that cause such a broad range in Cu isotopes are still unclear but liquid-vapor transitions and mantle metasomatism are being explored. Furthermore, δ⁶⁵Cu values of international rock standards reported in this study did not agree with previously reported data (Archer and Vance, 2004; Bigalke et al., 2010; Moeller et al., 2012; Liu et al., 2014, 2015) suggesting that aquaregia leach may not be a preferable technique when analyzing volcanic rocks.

Abstract:
This study integrates sequence stratigraphy of the Late Permian Toolachee Formation in the non-marine intracratonic Permian-Triassic Cooper Basin, Australia with 3-D seismic attribute analysis to predict the extent of depositional environments identified on wireline and well core data. The low resolution seismic data (tuning thickness 23 - 31 m) comprised of six seismic horizons allowed the successful testing of sequence stratigraphic interpretations of the productive Toolachee Formation that were based on wireline data. The analysis of 29 well logs and three 20 m core intervals resulted in the identification of eleven parasequences that comprise the building blocks of an overall transitional systems tract, characterised by a gradual increase in accommodation. The parasequences reflect cyclic transitions between braided and meandering fluvial systems as a result of fluctuations in sediment flux, possibly driven by Milankovitch climatic-forcing. The seismic horizon attribute maps image mostly the meandering fluvial bodies within the upper parts of the parasequences, but some maps image the lower amalgamated sand sheets and show no channel structures. Categorisation of the fluvial bodies in the overbank successions reflects a gradual decrease in sinuosity, channel width, and channel belt width up-section, supporting the overall increase in accommodation up-section. Similar acoustic impedance values for shales and sands do not suggest successful seismic forward modelling between the two lithologies. Geological interpretations suggest most imaged channel fill to be made up predominantly of fine sediments, as channel avulsion and abandonment is common and increases with time. Seismic forward modelling resulted in the interpretation of carbonaceous shale as a possible channel fill, supporting the geological interpretations. The three major identified fluvial styles; braided, meanders, and distributaries are potential targets for future exploration. Extensive sand sheets deposited from braided fluvial systems require structural traps for closure. Meandering and anastomosing channel systems represent excellent stratigraphic traps, such as the basal sands/gravels of laterally accreted point bars.
