Abstract:
An examination of the logical relationships between attitude statements suggests that attitudes can be ordered according to favourability, and can also stand in relationships of implication to one another. The traditional representation of attitudes, as points on a single dimension, is inadequate for representing both these relations but representing attitudes as intervals on a single dimension can incorporate both favourability and implication. An interval can be parameterised using its two endpoints or alternatively by its midpoint and latitude. Using this latter representation, the midpoint can be understood as the favourability of the attitude, while the latitude can be understood as its generality. It is argued that the generality of an attitude statement is akin to its latitude of acceptance, since a greater semantic range increases the likelihood of agreement. When Coombs Theory of Unidimensional Unfolding is reformulated using the interval representation, the key question is how to measure the distance between two intervals on the dimension. There are innumerable ways to answer this question, but the present study restricts attention to eighteen possible distance measures. These measures are based on nine basic distances between intervals on a dimension, as well as two families of models, the Minkowski r-metric and the Generalised Hyperbolic Cosine Model (GHCM). Not all of these measures are distances in the strict sense as some of them fail to satisfy all the metric axioms. To distinguish between these eighteen distance measures two empirical tests, the triangle inequality test, and the aligned stimuli test, were developed and tested using two sets of attitude statements. The subject matter of the sets of statements differed but the underlying structure was the same. It is argued that this structure can be known a priori using the logical relationships between the statements predicates, and empirical tests confirm the underlying structure and the unidimensionality of the statements used in this study. Consequently, predictions of preference could be ascertained from each model and either confirmed or falsified by subjects judgements. The results indicated that the triangle inequality failed in both stimulus sets. This suggests that the judgement space is not metric, contradicting a common assumption of attitude measurement. This result also falsified eleven of the eighteen distance measures because they predicted the satisfaction of the triangle inequality. The aligned stimuli test used stimuli that were aligned at the endpoint nearest to the ideal interval. The results indicated that subjects preferred the narrower of the two stimuli, contrary to the predictions of six of the measures. Since these six measures all passed the triangle inequality test, only one measure, the GHCM (item), satisfied both tests. However, the GHCM (item) only passes the aligned stimuli tests with additional constraints on its operational function. If it incorporates a strictly log-convex function, such as cosh, the GHCM (item) makes predictions that are satisfied in both tests. This is also evidence that the latitude of acceptance is an item rather than a subject or combined parameter.

Abstract:
The Jurassic Ferrar large igneous province of Antarctica contains significant mafic volcaniclastic deposits, underlying the Kirkpatrick flood basalts. In South Victoria Land, the mafic volcaniclastics are referred to as the Mawson Formation. At Coombs Hills, the Mawson is interpreted as filling a large vent complex, which was re-examined in detail to better understand vent-forming processes. Two contrasting types of cross-cutting volcaniclastic bodies were found in the complex, both of which are interpreted to have been forcefully emplaced from below into existing, non-consolidated debris. The first type consists of country rock-rich lapilli-tuff pipes. These are interpreted as fossilized remnants of subterranean debris jets which originated when phreatomagmatic explosions occurred near the walls or floor of the vent complex, causing fragmentation of both magma and country rock. The second type of cross-cutting body consists of basalt-rich tuff-breccias and lapilli-tuffs, some of which could have been generated by explosions taking place within pre-existing basalt-bearing debris, well away from the vent walls. Other basalt-rich zones, accompanied by domains of in situ peperite and coherent basalt, are inferred to have originated by less violent processes. At nearby Allan Hills, the Mawson can be divided into two informal members, m₁ and m₂. Member m₁ is exposed only at central Allan Hills, consists essentially of sedimentary material from the underlying Beacon Supergroup, and is interpreted as a [less than or equal to]180 m-thick debris avalanche deposit. Most megablocks in m₁ were derived from the late Triassic Lashly Formation, parts of which were probably only weakly consolidated in the Jurassic. Sandstone breccias dominate volumetrically over megablocks within the deposits. This indicates pervasive and relatively uniform fragmentation of the moving mass, and probably reflects the weak and relatively homogeneous nature of the material involved. The avalanche flowed into a pre-existing topographic depression carved into the Beacon sequence, and flow indicators reveal a northeastward movement. Sparse globular basaltic megablocks suggest that Ferrar intrusions played a role in triggering the avalanche. Member m₂, which is exposed at both central and southern Allan Hills, consists predominantly of metre-thick basaltic volcaniclastic layers that fall into three broad categories: (1) poorly sorted, coarse lapilli-tuff and tuff-breccia; (2) block-rich layers; (3) tuff and fine lapilli-tuff. The former type is interpreted as the deposits of high-concentration pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), probably formed during the collapse of phreatomagmatic eruption plumes. Occasional block-rich layers probably were formed by both ballistic fall from local vents and pyroclastic flows, and the finer-grained layers were probably deposited by dilute PDCs. Dilute, moist turbulent currents were also likely responsible for the generation and deposition of large ([less than or equal to]4.5 cm) rim-type accretionary lapilli. The thick layers are locally underlain by or interbedded with thin tuff ring-style volcaniclastic layers, and all the layers are underlain and invaded by basalt-rich tuff-breccias and lapilli-tuffs. Abstract:

A crisis can threaten the existence of an organization, and in this social media age, information is spread at lightning-fast speeds forcing crisis communication managers to work quickly to quell any unflattering press. Companies in crisis situations attempt to mitigate damage and repair reputations using crisis communication strategies, such as Coombs’ Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). This thesis explored social media as a crisis communication channel for these strategies, by studying an organizational crisis that played out almost entirely on social media, through the lens of SCCT.

This thesis used six statements made by The Honest Company during a 2013 crisis where stakeholders accused the company of bullying a working mother over trademark rights. The company’s crisis communication messages were retrieved, and by using discourse analysis the messages were examined through the guidelines of the SCCT model, which allowed categorization of the messages according to SCCT, analysis of their effectiveness, and the defining of SCCT challenges in analyzing this organizational conflict aggrandized through social media.

This study found that even though The Honest Company did not strictly adhere to SCCT’s guidelines, it was able to flourish and surpass consumer expectations after the crisis ended. The examination of this crisis offered insight into SCCT’s lack of clarity and direction concerning its crisis types, strategies, and guidelines. It also offered suggestions for more specific crisis types and the expansion of crisis types for SCCT.

Abstract:
In 1961 president kennedy established the office of assistant secretary of state for education and cultural affairs. This was in order to compete with the soviets in the field of international education and cultural affairs, and also to respond to the needs of developing countries especially in the training of their teachers and engineers. The present study examines the origins and the development of the office as well as the most important projects undertaken by the assistant secretary and the obstacles encountered during the period of march 1961 to april 1962. Also considered is the dismissal of philip coombs, the first holder of the office, coombs' philosophy and the terms in office of his successors. The conclusions reached are: 1) in 1961 a real need existed for the office, 2) the attempt by kennedy was a good idea but too hurriedly conceived and developed, 3) the position established was not adequate to meet the demands placed upon it in 1961-1962, 4) coombs was not well enough prepared although he was the best prepared to hold the office at the time, 5) the united states still has a crying need to improve its international education policy. This study is based on archival documents, personal papers and interviews with members of the kennedy administration

BACKGROUND: Individuals exposed to red blood cell alloantigens through transfusion may produce antibodies. Clinically significant red blood cells alloantibodies develop in 1- 38 % of patient, who receive multiple transfusion. Red cell antibodies, which can become undetectable over time, can cause delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions after incompatible blood transfusions. STUDY DESIGN, METHODS: Blood samples of 674 patients with hematologic and hematooncologic diseases, who undergo transfusion were studied. Antibodies screening and identification were performed by direct and indirect Coombs test. RESULTS: We examined the alloimmmunization risk and antibodies incidence over the period of 2 years (2004-2006). • Alloantibodies were found in 36,36 %, allo- and autoantibodies in– 52,27 %, autoantibodies in– 11,36 % patients. Alloantibodies against blood group system antigens incidence: Rh (58,75 %), Kell (11,25 %), MNS (7,5 %), Duffy (6,25 %), Lutheran (6,25 %), Lewis (5,00 %), Kidd (5,00 %) • We found that overall immunization rate in patients was 14, 77 % against Rh (68,42 %), Lutheran (15,79 %), Kell (10,53 %), Lewis (5,26 %) ir Kidd (5.26 %) blood group systems antigens. We examine the persistence of clinically significant red blood cell alloantibodies over a period of 5 years (2000-2006). • After 1 months 30,16 % antibodies become undetectable, after 3 months- 60,32 %, after 5 years– 88,89 %. Abstract:
Postoji pozitivna korelacija između citopenije i stepena konzumacije antihumanog globulina. Smanjenje titra antitela direktnog testa utroška antihumanog globulina je jedan od pokazatelja bolje prognoze bolesti.
INTRODUCTION: Cytopenia is one of the main characteristics of many hematologic diseases. In routine use are methods of detecting the presence of antibodies in the serum or on red blood cells of patients. The application of direct consumption test of antihuman globulin is an efficient way to gain complete insight into the immunological events at all bloodlines, monitor the dynamics of the development of antibodies and disease progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients samples were tested for: 1) direct antiglobulin test by micro agglutination method in the gel card (LISS) / Coombs ID. The result obtained by micro agglutination gel can be negative or positive, 2) direct consumption test of antihuman globulin in a test tube. Interpretation is performed by determining differences in titer of antihuman globulin by reading existing reactions of agglutination in samples of the patient and compare it to the results obtained with the samples of the healthy control persons. The test is considered positive if the difference in titres obtained AHG differs for at least two dilutions of a patient's cells compared to cells of healthy control persons. Statistical significance was analyzed by t-test, Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS: A total of 100 patients diagnosed withanemia, leukopenia, lymphoproliferative disease, thrombocytopenia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, myelodysplastic syndrome, myasthenia gravis and systemic lupus erythematosus were analyzed before and after receiving treatment. Direct antiglobulin test was positive in 20% cases, while the direct consumption test of anti-human globulin was 51%, that is the difference of 31%. After treatment direct antiglobulin test remainedpositive in 18% of cases and direct consumption test of antihuman globulin was in 46%, which is 28% higher. Determining the relationship between the degree of cytopenia and consumption of anti-human globulin showed that all monitored parameters affect the level of consumption: hemoglobin (β = -0.579, p = 0.000), hematocrit (β = -0.568, p = 0.000), erythrocytes (β = -0.519 , p = 0.000), platelets (β = -0.617, p = 0.000) and leukocytes (β = -0.119, p = 0.237). It was also proved that if the values of observed parameters are higher, difference in titer of direct consumption test of antihuman globulin is lower, which can indicate better prognosis of disease. CONCLUSION: Direct consumption test of antihuman globulin was significantly more  sensitive test than the direct anti-human globulin test. There is a positive correlation between the degree of cytopenia and consumption of anti-human globulin. Decrease in antibody titer in direct consumption test of antihuman globulinis an indicator of a better prognosis of the disease.

Immune hemolysis occurs due to auto-antibodies, drug induced or not, or due to allo-antibodies, formed by transfusion or passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors for immune hemolysis in LT. Between September 2014 and April 2016, 175 patients submitted to 178 LT were included. Multi-organ recipients were excluded. Samples from before, seven consecutive days and weekly for four weeks were analyzed for complete blood cound, reticulocyte count, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), indirect bilirrubin (IB) and imummohematological tests. SPSS 24 was used for statistical analysis, p<0.05 was considered significant. The mean age was 52.1 ± 14.6 years old, with 105 male patients (60%). The most frequent causes of cirrhosis were hepatitis C virus (HCV, 59 – 33.7%) and alcohol (44 – 25.1%). Anemia before LT was present in 140 patients (74.2%), with lower hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in those with positive direct antiglobulin test (DAT, p=0.014). Nine patients (5.1%) presented positive antibody screen (AS) before transplant, with 2.3% of clinical significance. This finding was more frequent in RhD negative patients (p=0.017). Positive DAT occurred in 53 patients (30.3%) and was related to high MELD score (p=0,048), HCV (p=0.005) and furosemide use (p=0.001). These patients presented higher levels of IB (p<0.001). Ninety six patients (55%) were transfused in the studied period. One hundred and fourty five patients (87.8%) were still anemic on the fourth week. Twenty two patients (12.5%) presented positive AS after LT, with nine patients (5.7%) presenting clinically significant antibodies. Positive AS occurred more frequently in RhD negative (p=0.021) and in those transfused with red blood cells units (RBCU, p=0.022). Sixteen patients received grafts with minor ABO incompatibility. Post-transplant positive DAT was associated with higher levels of LDH (p=0.006), piperacillin-tazobactam use (p=0.021) and was more frequent in the non identical ABO group (p=0.0038). In this group, five of eleven positive DAT patients presented anti-A (2) or anti-B (3) on the eluate, representing PLS. All PLS patients received liver graft O and were using mycofenolate, tacrolimus and steroids. Four patients presented hemolysis and three were transfused due to PLS. These patients, compared to all the other patients, presented lower Hb concentration (p=0.043) and higher LDH levels (p=0.008) and reticulocyte counts (p=0.008). The presence of auto and allo-antibodies against red blood cell antigens is frequent in LT, but clinical significant hemolysis occurred in only 2.8%. Antibodies are more frequent in patients with higher MELD scores, with HCV, in use of pre-transplant furosemide, in those transfused patients with RBCU, RhD negative and piperacillin-tazobactam use after LT. The only risk factor for PLS is minor ABO mismatch between donor and recipient.
Anemia no transplante hepático (TH) é multifatorial.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical and laboratory factors, dopplervelocimetric and hematimetric values in the prediction of fetal hemolysis between first and second intrauterine transfusion in alloimmunized pregnant women. METHODS: This retrospective study involved singleton pregnancies with non hydropic fetus, that underwent to first and second intrauterine transfusions (IUT) by simple direct intravascular technique, accompanied at Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de São Paulo. The following data were collected: maternal age, obstetric history, previus history of alloimmunization (classified in severe, moderate, mild and none), antibodies type and titre and data from the IUT (gestational age, hemoglobin levels before and after first IUT and before second IUT, middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity before first and second IUT, transfused blood volume, transfused blood hemoglobin concentration, time interval between transfusions and type of intrauterine puncture). The ratio between amount of endogenous hemoglobin and total amount of hemoglobin after IUT, volume expansion and hemolysis rate were calculated. RESULTS: Forty-one pregnant women were included and presented at first IUT, mean gestational age of 26.1 ± 4.6 weeks, mean of transfused blood volume of 44.4 ± 23.5ml and mean expansion volume of 51.3 ± 14.5%. The mean interval between the transfusions was 15.7±6.5 days. The mean hemolysis rate was 0.40 ± 0.25 g/dl/d between the first and second transfusions and there was not significant difference between the distinct groups of previous history of alloimmunization (p = 0.21). There was not significant difference between mean hemolysis rate and the type of intrauterine punction (p = 0.387). Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated that hemolysis correlated significantly with hemoglobin levels after the first transfusion (r = 0.60, p<0,001), the interval of time between transfusions (r = 0.64, p<0,001) and middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity before the second transfusion (r = 0.56, p<0.001). The best-fit equation for hemolysis rate was: 0.31517 + 0.03463 x Interval 0.314038 x MCA PSV pre 2 0.068719 x Hb zeta pos1 (r2 = 0.58). CONCLUSION: Fetal hemolysis rate between first and second transfusions in alloimmune disease can be predicted by a combination of hemoglobin levels after the first transfusion, interval between both procedures and middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity before the second transfusion

Abstract:
In December 22, 2010, the hockey clubs AIK and Djurgården played against each other in front of an audience of more than 11 000 people in Ericsson Globe Arena, Stockholm. Although it was one of the biggest games of the year, afterwards no one was talking about the actual game on the ice. The reason; several times during the game, hooligans from both sides started big quarrels and the hockey dome felt more like a war scene than a place for a hockey game. From a branding point of view, and along with similar incidents from the past, the night in December did not create a good situation for AIK and their image.   Therefore, in this essay I want to investigate how AIK communicated through the crisis. I also want to evaluate whether their communication was good or bad from the perspective of different crisis communication theories. The essay’s research questions are: How did media describe the crisis and AIK´s part in it? What effect did AIK´s previous history of similar problem have on the ongoing crisis? How did AIK communicate through the crisis? How was AIK´s image affected by the crisis? What did AIK do well/what could AIK have done better? To be able to answer these questions, several news articles from the sports paper “Hockeyexpressen” has been analyzed as well as a text from AIK itself. The answers from the analysis has then been weighed against Hearit´s and Benoit´s theories on apologia as well as Coombs theory on the impact from previous crisis. An important conclusion is that AIK protects its image during the crisis by using the strategy “shifting the blame”. AIK also redefines the picture of a true supporter by questioning the acts of some of their so called “fans”. AIK´s redefinition also serve to correct the news papers misleading use of different epithets on the same category of people. However, although their image stays more or less intact AIK fail to communicate the need of a broader responsibility from the society when it comes to the problems caused by sports related hooliganism.

Abstract:
A 3 (crisis response strategy) x 3 (medium) factorial design experiment was conducted to determine if information graphics conveyed through online news sources may be more beneficial for organizational reputations during some crisis situations than the use of news videos and text-based news stories. Variables examined include cognitive and affective appraisal, third-person effect, behavioral response and crisis response strategy. Recent research in organizational crisis communications has pointed to the fact that more information is needed regarding how individuals react cognitively and affectively to crisis communications. Current crisis communications literature is also sparse concerning the behavioral aspects of crisis message reception and social media usage. This study addressed these concerns and built on the established framework of Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT).

Abstract:

Buykx, Lucy. "Interactive recipe instructions : supporting cooks with better designs." Thesis, University of York, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5158/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last decade in HCI there has been a growing interest in using interactive technology to support human-food activities such as meal planning, shopping and cooking. However, despite the principles of UCD, few researchers have made use of empirical research of users’ human-food activities to ground their system designs, few evaluated their systems with users against a control and most have designed systems with the needs of younger people in mind. In the first two studies I investigated the food related activities of older adults using focus groups and a food and shopping diary with post diary interview. I found that older adults’ food related activities were both routinized and flexible. They were knowledgeable about food, how to plan meals, shop and prepare food and did not have need for technological support. The design assumptions of early food-related systems do not generalise to older adults. In the second two studies I investigated how cooks interact with recipe instructions in order to inform the design of interactive recipe systems. In the first cooking study I investigated the effect (1) of shorter recipe steps and (2) of integrating the instructions and information normally located in the ingredient list into the text of recipe steps. I found that cooks do not read or perform the tasks of recipe instructions in sequence. In part this is because of the nature of recipe procedures and in part because they read ahead to understand the narrative of ingredients to help them interpret the current step. Cooks found instructions with ingredient information integrated clearer and easier to read because integrating the information reduces the need for the cook to look up and mentally integrate information from different sources. In the second cooking study I investigated the effects (1) of adding pictures to recipe steps and (2) of presenting an overview of the structure of the recipe procedure. I found that cooks liked pictures with the recipe steps but they did not reduce problems or errors. Cooks preferred recipes with a structural overview because it enabled them to understand the process and to plan and perform tasks in parallel. Results suggest that the overview presentation, by highlighting the sub-goals of recipe instructions, reduced problems due to recipe content experienced by cooks. The implications for design show that future interactive recipe systems should integrate ingredient information into the recipe steps, support cooks to move around the recipe steps non- sequentially, support cooks to perform more than one step in parallel and provide an overview of the procedure with sub-goals.

Templeman, Sally Jane. "Cooks, cooking, and food on the early modern stage." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/9824.

Full text
Abstract:
This project aims to take the investigation of food in early modern drama, in itself a relatively new field, in a new direction. It does this by shifting the critical focus from food-based metaphors to food-based properties and food-producing cook characters. This shift reveals exciting, unexpected, and hitherto unnoticed contexts. In The Taming of the Shrew and Titus Andronicus, which were written during William Shakespeare’s inn-yard playhouse period, the playwright exploits these exceptionally aromatic venues in order to trigger site-specific responses to food-based scenes in these plays. Ben Jonson’s Bartholomew Fair brings fair-appropriate gingerbread properties onstage. When we look beneath the surface of this food effect to its bread and wine ingredients, however, it reveals a subtext that satirizes the theory of transubstantiation. Jonson expands on this theme by using Ursula’s cooking fire (a property staged in Jonson’s representation of Smithfield’s Bartholomew Fair) to engage with the prison narrative of Anne Askew, who was burned to death in front of Bartholomew Priory on the historic Smithfield for denying the doctrine of transubstantiation. This thesis also investigates water, which, for early moderns, was a complex and quasi-mystical liquid: it was a primary element, it washed sin from the world during the Great Flood, it was a marker of status, it was a medicine, and it was a cookery ingredient. Christopher Marlowe not only uses dirty water to humiliate his doomed monarch in Edward II, but he also uses it to apportion blame to the king for his own downfall. In Timon of Athens, Shakespeare draws on the theory of the elements to cast Timon as a man of water, who, Jesus-like, breaks up and divides (or splashes around) his body at his “last” supper. Fully-fledged cook characters were a relative rarity on the early modern stage. This project looks at two exceptions: Furnace in Philip Massinger’s A New Way to Pay Old Debts and the unnamed master cook in John Fletcher’s The Tragedy of Rollo, Duke of Normandy. Both playwrights use their respective gastronomic geniuses to demonstrate the danger that lower-order expertise poses to the upper classes when society is in flux. Finally, this project demonstrates that a link existed between ornate domestic food effects and alchemy. It shows how Philip Massinger’s The Great Duke of Florence and Thomas Middleton’s Women, Beware Women use food properties associated with alchemy to satirize notions of perfection in their play-worlds.

Abstract:
I studied coots nesting at semipermanent and seasonal wetlands near Flagstaff, Arizona. Coot nests in bulrush (at the semipermanent wetland) were spaced closer together than nests in spikerush (at seasonal and semipermanent wetlands). Nests were much more successful in bulrush at the semipermanent wetland than in spikerush at seasonal wetlands. Coots nesting in bulrush laid larger eggs than coots nesting in spikerush. However, coots nesting in spikerush at seasonal wetlands laid larger clutches than coots nesting in bulrush at the semipermanent wetland. Better nesting success was related to better vegetative concealment of the nest from crows and ravens. Smaller territories and larger eggs among nests in bulrush were related to better food resources in the vicinity of the nest as indicated by a greater abundance and diversity of emerging aquatic insects. Clutches with more eggs, however, did not correspond to nest sites associated with more abundant aquatic insects. I suggest that clutch size might have been influenced by some aspect of nutrients stored prior to egg-laying which were not necessarily gained from resources on the territory. In general, in areas where nests were more closely spaced (e.g., bulrush) clutches contained fewer eggs than in areas where nests were spaced further apart (e.g., spikerush at seasonal wetlands) indicating the amount of energy expended by the female on the defense of territories might also affect clutch size.

Abstract:
In the light of corporate scandals, pressure has increased on organizations to communicate information related to their corporate social responsibility (CSR). In order to keep up with the increased pressure on social commitment, organizations’ self-descriptions may be future-oriented rather than reflections of reality. The future-oriented communication may improve the organizational culture and thereby motivate staff to perform more efficiently. On the other hand, if the organization does not fulfill their CSR communication it could lead to internal skepticism. This thesis constitutes a case study of the organization Coop, comprising whether the relationship between its CSR communication and the internal perception of Coop’s CSR work in store has affected their organizational culture.   In order to answer How does Coop communicate it sustainability work through its external communication? and How does the staff perceive Coop's sustainability work? a qualitative content analysis and interviews with Coop’s staff have been conducted. The theoretical framework consists of Nils Brunsson’s (2006) theory about Organized hypocrisy, and Christensen's (1997) Autocommunication.   A conclusion that can be made from the results of this thesis, is that the image communicated from Coop (regarding their sustainability work) does not seem to be fully aligned with the staff’s perception of Coop’s sustainability work. Coop’s definition of their sustainability work had only been acknowledged by some, whereas half of the staff had individual interpretations of Coop’s sustainability work. The various definitions of sustainability among the staff led to various attitudes towards Coop’s sustainability work, which ultimately resulted in a fragmented organizational culture.

Abstract:
During a long period of time, mankind as we know it, has progressed in remarkable ways. We leap from one era to another, whilst becoming smarter and more capable. Although one could argue for the superiority of man, we have now reached a time where our skilfulness is beginning to backfire. As the desire for production and consumption is growing, the environmental impacts increase. Climate change has in many ways become the product of modernity. However, these relatively new circumstances are met with more and more awareness. One example is how Swedish grocery stores, in this case COOP, have expanded their range of vegetarian foods. They claim to take responsibility for the planet and for a greener future. In the last two years, they have released two rather noteworthy commercials, with the aim of reducing meat-eating. By applying a narrative and semiotic analysis, and by using Becks theories on reflexive modernization as framework, this essay has studied these commercials in order to understand how they communicate their plant based alternatives in relation to a changing society. The results showed that both commercials portray a growing concern for the planet and the prevailing change of its climate. To prevent these conditions from accelerating, they suggest less meat on the plate. Likewise, semiotic tools, like falling trees or flooding cities, are used to enhance the significance of the narrative. In conclusion, both commercials show to be in line with Becks observations of the modernized world – an acknowledgement of its detrimental character. Additively, they function as a means of addressing the issues of modernity and meat-eating in particular.

Rogner, Sam. "Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth? : Burden Sharing and Effectiveness in Peacekeeping Operations."

Abstract:
This paper examines the effect of burden sharing in peacekeeping operations (both among contingent troops and in the entirety of the mission) and effectiveness, specifically whether a party chooses to renege on a peace agreement. The author hypothesizes that burden sharing will make it less likely that a party reneges on a peace agreement. The theoretical argument made in the paper is that burden sharing will help in solving the commitment problem inherent to peace agreements, by signaling to the combatants that the peacekeeping mission is there to stay (and won’t be vulnerable to a potential withdrawal from an important contributor), as well as signaling that there is international support for punishing measures against a party who would renege on the agreement. The paper examines all peacekeeping missions that deployed following a peace agreement between 1992-2016 using data on peacekeeping contributions from the United Nations. The hypotheses will however not be supported by the empirics. In fact there is limited evidence for burden sharing among contingent troops to increase the likelihood that a party chooses to renege on a peace agreement, while burden sharing among all personnel (military and civilian) have no effect on the matter.

Abstract:
I investigate the range of different agents’ explicit and implicit views about the forest and forest practices to see what makes the forest such an important resource in Mayurbhanj District in Orissa, India. There are two main lines of inquiry in this dissertation. I examine the social construction of forest practices and livelihoods in relation to sustainability, and how nature-culture, forest-village, object-subject, other-self and local knowledge-Western scientific knowledge are constructed, accounted for and represented. I analyse the junglewala’s (forest-dwellers’) and foresters’ views of forest practices and each other. I begin with concrete, material forest practices, and gradually move towards analysing their conceptual forms. The main questions of the dissertation investigates are why and how many state forest practices have been so detrimental to the junglewala’s livelihood sustainability despite over a century of declared attempts in Mayurbhanj. To do this I investigate several counterpositions: conflicts and trade-offs between different forest uses, and mismatches of worldviews and cosmovision models. In order to answer these questions and to understand these counterpositions, I investigate villagers’ and state forest practices, forest knowledges, and make a symbolic interpretation of worldviews and cosmovision models, which consist of natural, human and cosmic spheres. I examine what forest practices mean in Mayurbhanj with a three-pronged approach combining actor-oriented, case-study and symbolic approaches.

O'Neill, Molly. "Seasonal Hydrography and Hypoxia of Coos Bay, Oregon." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18521.

Abstract:
The recent rise of inner shelf hypoxia in the California Current System has caused concern within the scientific community, sparking a surge in studies addressing the issue. While regional studies of hypoxia abound, relatively little attention has been focused on the smaller coastal estuarine systems in the Pacific Northwest. Here, we present results from Coos Bay, a small, highly seasonal estuary on the southern Oregon coast. Due to wide fluctuations in freshwater input, Coos Bay exhibits characteristics of a salt-wedge type estuary in the winter, a well-mixed estuary in the summer, and a partially-mixed estuary during times of moderate discharge. Despite a strong coupling with coastal waters, we did not find evidence for pervasive hypoxia in Coos Bay. The primary drivers of variability in dissolved oxygen levels in the estuary are upwelling wind stress, residence time, and in situ biologic processes.

Carabello, Maria. "Defining Food Agency: An Ethnographic Exploration of Home and Student Cooks in the Northeast." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2015. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/453.

Full text
Abstract:
According to popular and academic sources, home cooking is in decline. Nutrition and public health scholars concern that a loss of cooking abilities may diminish individuals' control over their food choices, thus contributing to poor health outcomes. Yet, there are still many unanswered questions. What skills, strategies, and knowledge sets are required to cook a meal on any given occasion? What capacity separates those who cook with ease from those who struggle to incorporate cooking into their daily routines? I propose that this difference is determined by an individual's capacity to employ a range of cognitive and technical skills related to meal preparation. I call this capacity 'food agency'. Drawing upon discourses of human agency developed in the social sciences, this food-specific theory considers how a home cook employs cognitive skills and sensory perceptions, while navigating'and shaping'various societal structures (e.g., schedule, budget, transportation, etc.) in the course of preparing a meal. Thus, to have food agency is to be empowered to act throughout the course of planning and preparing meals. To better understand the form and function of food agency in everyday contexts, this thesis has pursued two ethnographic explorations. The first study explored food agency from the vantage of routine performance by looking at the everyday practices of twenty-seven home cooks in the Northeastern United States. Data was collected through videotaping and observing the home cooks as they prepared typical dinnertime meals, followed-up with semi-structured interviews. The data has revealed a working model of the interrelated components seen as essential to consistent cooking practice, and thus to food agency'a conglomeration of skills, techniques, and strategies; structural and sensory guidelines; confidence and self-efficacy. All the home cooks were found to possess a basic scaffolding for food agency, yet the degree to which each had developed fluency in any given area was contingent upon personal experience. This supports the view that food agency is an actively acquired and dynamic capacity best understood as fluid rather than dichotomous. The second study explored food agency through guided progression, by following a cohort of eight college students at the University of Vermont as they learned how to cook during a semester-long food and culture course. Data was collected through videotaping the students as they cooked, and by interviewing them about their food behaviors and experiences at the beginning and end of the semester. The findings outlined the students' various trajectories as they progressed in many of the component areas involved in food agency'for example, skills, techniques, organizational strategies, sensory engagement, and a sense of individual and collective efficacy around meal preparation. While the longitudinal scope of this study was limited, these results suggest a need to develop similar curricula for hands-on cooking interventions that can be offered in a more diverse range of settings and contexts.

Yang, Nanying. "Characterization and modeling of silicon and silicon carbide power devices." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29643.

Full text
Abstract:
Power devices play key roles in the power electronics applications. In order for the power electronics designers to fully utilize the performance advantages of power devices, compact power device models are needed in the circuit simulator (Saber, P-spice, etc.). Therefore, it is very important to get accurate device models. However, there are many challenges due to the development of new power devices with new internal structure and new semiconductor materials (SiC, GaN, etc.). In this dissertation, enhanced power diode model is presented with an improvement in the reverse blocking region. In the current power diode model in the Saber circuit simulator, an empirical approach was used to describe the low-bias reverse blocking region by introducing an effect called â conduction loss,â a parameter that causes a linear relationship between the device voltage and current at low bias voltages with no physics meaning. Furthermore, this term is not sufficient to accurately describe the changes to the device characteristics as the junction temperature is varied. In the enhanced model, an analytical temperature dependent model for the reverse blocking characteristics has been developed for Schottky/JBS diodes by including the thermionic-emission mechanism in the low-bias range. The newly derived model equations have been implemented in Saber circuit simulator using MAST language. An automated parameter extraction software package developed for constructing silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) power diode models, which is called DIode Model Parameter extrACtion Tools (DIMPACT). This software tool extracts the data necessary to establish a library of power diode component models and provides a method for quantitatively comparing between different types of devices and establishing performance metrics for device development. This dissertation also presents a new Saber-compatible approach for modeling the inter-electrode capacitances of the Si CoolMOSTM transistor. This new approach accurately describes all three inter-electrode capacitances (i.e., gate-drain, gate-source, and drain-source capacitances) for the full operating range of the device. The model is derived using the actual charge distribution within the device rather than assuming a lumped charge or one-dimensional charge distribution. The comparison between the simulated data with the measured results validates the accuracy of the new physical model.

Kim, Alexander. "Switching-Loss Measurement of Current and Advanced Switching Devices for Medium-Power Systems." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34568.

Full text
Abstract:
The ultimate goal for power electronics is to convert one form of raw electrical energy into a usable power source with the lowest amount of loss. A considerable portion of these losses are due to the use of switching devices themselves. Device losses can be apportioned to conduction loss and switching loss. It is commonly known and practiced that conduction loss can be reduced by driving MOSFETs and IGBTs harder with gate voltages closer to the maximum rating. This lowers the voltage across the device in the path of the amplified current and ultimately reduces power dissipated by the device. However, switching losses of these devices are not as easily characterized or intuitive for power electronics designers. This is mainly due to the fact that the parasitic reactive elements are nonlinear and not as readily documented as I-V characteristics of a given power device. For example, non-linear parasitic capacitances in the device are given for a fixed frequency across a voltage sweep. Parasitic inductance is typically not even mentioned in the datasheet. The switching losses of these devices depend on these mysterious reactances. A functional way to obtain estimates of switching loss is to test the device under the conditions the device will be used. However, this task must be approached carefully in order to accurately measure the voltage and current of the device. Measurement devices also have parasitic impedances of their own that can add or subtract to switching energy during turn on or turn off and create misleading results. Preliminary testing was performed on multiple devices. After preliminary testing and deliberation, a device-measurement printed circuit board was made to easily replace switching devices of the same package. This thesis presents switching loss measurements of medium-power capable devices in the tens of kW range. It also aims to attribute characteristics of switching voltage and current waveforms to the internal structure of the devices. The device tester designed is versatile since the output buffer of the gate drive is comprised of D-PAK totem pole BJTs. This is able to drive both current and voltage driven devices, i.e. SiC J-FETs (current-driven) and other voltage-driven devices (i.e. MOSFETs and IGBTs). It also allows for TO-220 and TO-247 packaged power diodes.
