Abstract:
I posit that contemporary fears about the effect electronic media has on us and our children is anything but new. Therefore, reminiscing about the "good ole days" and wanting to go back would not actually solve the problem. However, looking back to a time when there was also anxiety about electronic media and the shifting field of public and private may reveal new possibilities for relating to and with these media. Rather than flatly blame media as an apparently new cause of harm, it is essential to reveal media's historical and political conditions, only in this way can we better assess its possibilities and limits. I argue that the figure of the mother in Poltergeist (1982) and Stranger Things (2016-) can be read as both a metaphor and model for media. The mother exhibits, what I call, active-passivity, which means that she does not amputate herself from her media use and its implications, but rather provides oversight and intervenes when necessary. I draw upon the work of media scholar Marshall McLuhan in order to read the figure of the mother as a cool medium that demonstrates and invites a high level of involvement. The figure of the mother's method of media use is affirmed by the film and offered as not only a mode of media use but also a mode of politicization. In our present moment, we are constantly technologically extended into the world with our networked media. I contend that Stranger Things returns to the 1980s to reveal that even while using cool media, what is important is how one uses that media. I utilize the work of Svetlana Boym in my argument that not only can we learn something from media that is nostalgic, but we can learn something about our relationship with media through nostalgia.

Cool collapsible is a project that involves creating an innovative collapsible outdoor table. This thesis work has been performed in collaboration with aka buna design consult in Salzburg, Austria. Aka buna design consult is a design consultant who works with different product lines, cool collapsible is an internal project where the idea is about creating a product field with different collapsible products. As an exchange student and manage to established a contact and resulted in this thesis. The project has focused on finding a function, technology or materials to then transform it into an innovative outdoor table. By extensively worked to define the target group, created a framework for a table format for the typical user. The result was a collapsible table that got its inspiration from nature. A table, that folds up like a flower blooming. By adding an experience of a static product creates a different relation to the table so that it will stand out from today's market.

Abstract:
The energy efficiency of a building is directly related to the heat transfer between the building and the outside environment. In order to limit the heat transfer to the building by solar radiation cool roofs have been developed which increase the solar reflectivity of roofs. This report investigates the potential application of high reflectivity coatings to roofs at Pomona College and the energy benefits that could result. Cool roofs are used to address two prevalent environmental concerns: high cooling loads and Urban Heat Islands. These two problems are linked and exhibit the potential micro and mesoscale benefits of reducing roof surface temperature. Cool roofs are part of a larger set of solutions to tackle these two issues and so must be considered in the context of the multitude of other mitigation measures. This report discusses the ways in which a cool roof affects a building envelope and Urban Heat Islands, and what this means in the context of Southern California and Pomona College. Due to the already energy efficient clay tile on most Pomona roofs, the gains from reflective coatings would be limited. However there are several flat roofs on campus that could benefit from the application of a reflective coating. These benefits would come in the form of cooling energy cost reduction to individual buildings. These benefits would not be so drastic as to necessitate immediately applying reflective coatings, but flat roofs should be updated with an energy efficient coating as part of regularly scheduled resurfacing

Clarke, F. "Variability in ultra cool dwarfs." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2002. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.597743.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter one provides a brief overview of the physics of ultra cool dwarfs, and discusses relevant observation to date. Of particular import is an understanding of their atmospheric physics. The cool temperatures (2500K) of their atmospheres are condusive to the formation of molecules, the occurrence of chemistry and the condensation of solid and liquid particulates. The latter of these processes, which can be regarded as the formation of clouds, is especially interesting and poorly constrained by current theory and observation. One method of probing the structure, scale and distribution of clouds is to observe and characterise the variability they induce. In this dissertation, I present the results of observations designed to detect and characterise the photometric and spectroscopic variability induced by inhomogeneous cloud formations on ultra cool dwarfs. Chapters two and three describe observations and modelling of the brown dwarf Kelu-1. I report the discovery of a 1.8 hour periodicity in the object's brightness and discuss models to explain it. Chapter three then describes observations designed to test these models, and the conclusions that can be drawn from them. Observations of four further ultra cool dwarfs are described in chapter 4, and I report the discovery of photometric variability in two of them. These three chapters together form the most sensitive study of variability in ultra cool dwarfs made to date. In chapter five I discuss the possibility of imaging extrasolar plants and brown dwarfs around nearby white dwarfs. If discovered, these objets would be the "coolest" ultra cool dwarf known. Chapter six contains conclusions, and a brief summary of potential future work in this field.

Abstract:
The theme of this master's thesis is "Marketing Revival of 'Cool tour linka'". 'Cool tour linka' is a joint project of Prague's leading exhibition institutions and transport company. Introductory part presents the project with the aim to preserve it "for next generations" too. 'Cool tour linka' was terminated due to economical reasons. Therefore the thesis leads to formation of a new project, that would work under even less favourable conditions. Conclusions from the chapters that analyse the previous 'Cool tour linka' (analysis of the visitors' attendance, application of marketing tools, SWOT analysis) are used in the new project. Both the original and the newly proposed 'Cool tour linka' emphasize the element of cooperation of the organisations operating in the field of culture and the importance of unusual presentation of arts collections to the public.

Abstract:
This poetry collection moves from the narrator’s childhood in the marshes of Canada to her coming of age in a new, southern swamp in South Florida. Many of the poems use free verse as well as fairly recent poetic forms like the Golden Shovel and the Pecha Kucha. Others rely on wordplay and nonce forms. Influenced by Hector Veil Temperly, Matthew Zapruder, Dorothea Lasky, Laura Kasischke and Anne Carson, the poems often employ simple language in stream of consciousness, and oscillate between lyric and narrative. These poems are feverish creations inspired by the oracular tradition and induced by the psychic crush of modern life: depression of the body and mind, cultural paranoia, and the decline of nature. The reader is privy not only to the personal biography of the narrator, but also to the inner workings of the narrator’s mind as it encounters and interprets the world.

Rosén, Lisa. "Magnetic fields of cool active stars." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Observationell astrofysik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-283357.

Full text
Abstract:
Magnetic fields are present throughout the universe and are very important for many astrophysical processes. Magnetic field influences a star throughout its life and affects nearby objects such as planets. Stellar magnetic field can be detected by measuring the Zeeman splitting of spectral lines in the intensity spectra (Stokes I) if the field is strong, or by analyzing polarization spectra if the field is weak. Magnetic fields in stars similar to the Sun are ubiquitous but, in general, relatively weak. Until recently these fields were detected through circular polarization (Stokes V) only since linear polarization (Stokes QU) is significantly weaker. The information embedded in different Stokes spectra is used for reconstruction of the surface magnetic field topology with Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI) technique. However, cool stars often have complex field geometries and this, combined with a low field strength, partial Stokes parameter observations and the presence of cool spots, makes accurate magnetic mapping difficult. We have performed numerical tests of ZDI to investigate some of the problems of magnetic inversions and ways to overcome them. The most reliable results were found when magnetic field and temperature inhomogeneities were modelled simultaneously and all four Stokes parameters were included in the reconstruction process. We carried out observations of active cool stars in all four Stokes parameters trying to find an object with linear polarization signatures suitable for ZDI. The RS CVn star II Peg was identified as a promising target, showing exceptionally strong linear polarization signatures. We reconstructed the magnetic field in II Peg using full Stokes vector observations for the first time in a cool star. Compared to the magnetic maps recovered from the Stokes IV spectra, the four Stokes parameter results reveal a significantly stronger and more complex surface magnetic field and a more compact stellar magnetosphere. Spectropolarimetric observations and magnetic inversions can also be used to investigate magnetic activity of the young Sun and its implications for the solar system past. To this end, we studied a sample of six stars with parameters very similar to the present Sun, but with ages of only 100-650 Myr. Magnetic field maps of these young solar analogues suggest a significant decrease of the field strength in the age interval 100-250 Myr and a possible change in the magnetic field topology for stars older than about 600 Myr.

Abstract:
M-dwarfs are the coolest type of hydrogen-burning stars, and three times as numerous as all other stars in the Galaxy combined. Thanks to their low masses, luminosities and surface temperatures, they are potentially the best targets for finding exoplanets capable of supporting life. A low surface temperature unfortunately also allows the formation of various molecules, which complicates spectroscopic analyses. In this work, the molecular lines of titanium oxide (TiO) and various atomic lines are analyzed in a high-resolution (R ~ 68000) UVES spectrum of the M-dwarf GJ 876, as well as very high-resolution (R ~ 120000) spectra of five M-dwarfs. The TiO linelist is evaluated in a theoretical study of the molecular model. Results of the molecular line analysis are found to be misleading in certain regions. The strong TiO bands below wavelengths of 7300 Å indicate results incompatible with atomic lines at higher wavelengths. Instead, the TiO lines near 7700 Å are preferred. The theoretical study of the molecule improved both the precision and accuracy of transition wavelengths, but could not improve results of the molecular line analysis. The incompatible results are believed to stem from inaccuracies in the molecular line haze. Analyses in the wavelength range 7600-8800 Å are found to indicate consistent results, but residual accuracy problems cannot be excluded in the present analysis. Further study of M-dwarfs and improved modeling of TiO could resolve this issue, as well as lead to general improvements in the analyses of cool stars.

Abstract:
PhD
The influential theorist, David Bordwell, talks about various modes of watching film: the intellectual, the casual, or the obsessive interaction with cinema practiced by the film-buff. This thesis is an attempt to come to terms with film and film culture in a number of ways. It is first an attempt at reinscribing a notion of aesthetics into film studies. This is not an easy task. I argue that film theory is not adequately equipped to discuss film in affective terms, and that instead, it emphasises ways of thinking about film and culture quite removed from the act of film ‘spectating’ – individually, or perhaps even more crucially, collectively. To my mind, film theory increasingly needs to ask: are theorists and the various subjectivities about whom they theorise watching the same films, and in the same way? My experience of film is, as Tara Brabazon writes about her own experience of film, a profoundly emotional one. Film is a stream of quotation in my own life. It is inextricably wrapped up inside memory (and what Hutcheon calls postmodern nostalgia). Film is experience. I would not know how to communicate what Sergio Leone ‘means’ or The Godfather ‘represents’ without engaging what Barbara Kennedy calls the ‘aesthetic impulse.’ In this thesis, I extrapolate from what film means to me to what it might mean to an abstract notion of culture. For this reason, Chapters Three and Four are necessarily abstract and tentatively bring together an analysis of The Matrix franchise and Quentin Tarantino’s brand of metacinema. I focus on an aesthetics of cinema rather than its politics or ideological fabric. This is not to marginalise such studies (which, in any case, this thesis could not do) but to make space for another perspective, another way of considering film, a new way of recuperating affect.

Abstract:
In cool stars, like the Sun, energy from the inside is transported to its surface by convection, which then can escape into space as radiation that we can observe. Modeling this photospheric transition region – from convective to radiative energy transport – is notoriously challenging due to the inherent three-dimensional (3D) nature of convection itself and the complex non-linear and non-local interaction of the radiation field with the stellar plasma. Astronomers rely on theoretical atmosphere models, which provide the fundamental basis to study and understand stars. The commonly employed one-dimensional (1D) atmosphere models make use of several simplifications, in particular, convection is usually treated with the mixing-length theory (MLT), despite its well-known wrongness simply due to the lack of a considerably improved alternative. Therefore, the only appropriate approach to overcome this issue, is to solve the time-dependent, 3D, hydrodynamic equations coupled a with the realistic treatment of radiative transfer. Due to the soaring computational power in the recent decades, significant progress has been established with the advent of 3D radiative hydrodynamic (RHD) atmosphere simulations. Nowadays, these perform exceedingly well and offer exceptional predictive potential as detailed comparisons with the Sun have repeatedly revealed. Equipped with this matured, powerful tool, I want to address the following three main questions as the aim of my thesis: What are the atmospheric properties of cool stars besides the Sun? Which differences are given between 1D and 3D models? How do the application-based predictions change? To attend to this matter in a systematical approach, I have computed the Stagger-grid, a comprehensive grid of 3D RHD model atmospheres of cool stars covering a wide range in stellar parameters. In this thesis I describe the methods I have applied for the computation of the grid models, and the general properties of the 3D models, as well as their temporal and spatial averages are presented and discussed in detail. Also, the differences between 1D and 3D stratifications are determined, and the details of stellar granulation, the manifestation of subsurface convection, is extensively depicted. Furthermore, I investigated with the Stagger-grid several applications for 3D atmosphere simulations including: spectral line profiles, important for stellar parameter determination, stellar spectroscopy and abundance analysis; limb darkening, necessary for interferometry and extrasolar planet search; and the calibration of the mixing length, which will improve stellar evolution models. The cumulative technical developments of high-resolution observations in the recent years have surpassed the standards of theoretical 1D atmosphere models, thereby, it has given rise to the enhanced demand of improved atmosphere simulations. By providing a comprehensive grid of 3D RHD atmosphere models to the astronomical community, a major contribution has been achieved to live up to the current and future high-precision observations, which ultimately will lead to a better understanding of cool stars.

Fortais, Sarah Elizabeth. "Defining cool through a bricoleur's studio practice." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10052124/.

Full text
Abstract:
My practice-led research aims to define what it means to call a person or thing ‘cool’. Methodologically, my fine art practice is bricolage: disassembling, repurposing, and modifying objects or ideas to generate new wholes and understanding. As a bricoleur, I thus set out to break down the value judgement of cool into constituent parts, to enable a more nuanced definition to emerge. By surveying current research on cool in fields such as marketing, jazz, and neuroscience, and by creating two artworks, I identified 14 sensibilities (i.e. processes sensed and engaged with) that culminate in judging something to be cool. My artworks, 1 2 3 (Unfinished) (2014-2016) and Lunar Salon (2015), highlighted that the sensibilities of originality and spontaneity are related to creativity, and so I proceeded to investigate how cool might be valuable to a creative practice. My final artwork, spacesuits for animals (2016-ongoing) concluded that all 14 sensibilities of cool could become incorporated into, and could enhance my bricolage methodology. In this report I articulate what these sensibilities emotionally and materially felt like as they fused with my practical methods. This articulation was key to understanding that cool as a value judgement is comprised of a flexible network of both experienced and observed sensibilities. The specific network that I produced was subjective, but its constituent sensibilities are a synthesis of discourse on cool and my personal experience, and are original contributions to knowledge. Cool is made of pre-existing physical/conceptual material, but it contributes unique value to the world in the same way that a bricolage sculpture creates unique value: not from what it is but rather, from how it is made. Calling something cool is the result of a creative methodology which builds connections between bodily interactions, personal experiences, concepts, and personal values, and as such, can help to articulate and even formulate one’s identity.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last few decades it has become clear that metals present within the atmospheres of more than one quarter of white dwarfs signify recent accretion of minor bodies from their planetary systems. Spectral analysis of these metal-polluted white dwarfs allows determination of the accreted body composition, providing the most direct method for measuring the makeup of exoplanetary material. So far, most detailed abundance analyses have mostly been limited to a few systems at a time. In this thesis, I present a sample of 231 cool DZ white dwarfs identified from SDSS spectroscopy. These stars exhibit strong metal lines from multiple elements, permitting detailed abundance analyses of each. Furthermore their low effective temperatures of 9000{4400 K imply corresponding cooling ages of 1{8 Gyr, allowing me to examine some of the oldest planetary systems in orbit of stellar remnants. Across the sample, I found a huge diversity in the metal abundance ratios, with Fe/Ca varying by a factor 100. I developed a simple method for interpreting the rocky geology of the accreted parent bodies, indicating that some were composed of > 80 % crust material, and with > 80 % core material for others. Using the calculated white dwarf ages, I identified a downwards trend of the highest levels of metal pollution for the oldest systems, suggesting their mass reservoirs of exoplanetesimals become depleted on a ' 1 Gyr time scale. Finally, Zeeman split metal lines are found in the spectra of 33 of these systems, with surface magnetic fields in the range 0:25{30 MG. Investigation of this rare combination of metals and magnetism has consequences for the formation of white dwarf magnetic fields, and motivates new research in atomic physics.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, an ontology of contemporary cinema is developed using the position assumed by postmodern thinkers (notably Jean Baudrillard) and contemporary filmmakers. Using Baudrillard's perspective it is argued that the cinematic apparatus is an expression of both human curiosity and a desire to place "reality" at a distance. While the spectator seeks involvement with the viewed subject, he or she remains detached from the images which simulate the various "realities" in which he or she becomes "involved" through the act of viewing. The contemporary Western subject is said to crave "meaning" in a universe which is increasingly secular, materialistic, individualistic and, to a certain extent, "virtual". Life is also said to be more ironic, providing illusory concessions such as communication in lieu of interaction, information instead of knowledge, choice in favour of quality, surfaces rather than depth, and images which ultimately extinguish "the real". Moving images may be said to allude to the artificial nature of a "reality" which is itself a human construction. This suggests that the role of the camera is to place both the world and human subjects "at a distance", thereby objectifying (and potentially dehumanising) the subject-objects of the gaze. Many postmodern films are concerned with the functioning of the cinematic apparatus itself, and these films - implicitly and explicitly - deal with the way in which subjectivity is established through the cinematic gaze. "Realism" in the cinema has to a large extent shifted from the documentation of the world, to techniques which problematise the viewer's experience of "reality". Interactivity, faux-verité and the hyperrealism of computer graphic imaging, have contributed to the confusion of various forms of screen "realism", arguably impacting on the viewer's experience of "reality". In another sense, "reality" has been transformed by the blurring of distinctions between high and low cultural paradigms, increasingly evident in work that privileges the showing of "perverse", "profane", "grotesque", "vulgar" and explicit "realities". Boundaries between private and publiC spaces are eroded as the cinematic apparatus takes spectators into increasingly intimate personal spaces, demystifying and popularising the unknown and previously hidden. Considering the influence of commercial and socio-economic factors on the development of contemporary cinema (emphasizing Hollywood), the thesis looks at the aesthetic, thematic and narrative concerns of both mainstream and niche-market films. Focus is given to the socalled postmodern aesthetic which is closely linked to what some critics call recycling (an inability to say anything "new"), some label "empty" (meaningless) and many see as "schizoid" (able to be read in various, often contradictory, ways). The thesis proposes that contemporary (postmodern) cinema is a "pure" form which increasingly sets "reality" at a distance so that it's illusory nature is emphasised. It also demonstrates how contemporary films serve as reflections of a world which is itself nothing but a reflection (artificial construction). Like dreams, fantasies and other "virtual realities", the cinema represents a form of "remembering" which is detached from any particular time or space. In this sense, cinematic moving images enable viewers to engage with aspects of their own humanity which may be quite independent of the "reality" status of the world.

Jones, Gordon B. "Temporal Nutrient Dynamics in Cool-Season Pasture." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/23143.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding the nutrient dynamics of pastures is essential to their profitable and sustainable management.  Tall fescue [Schendonorus phoenix (Scop.) Holub.] is the predominant forage species in Virginia pasturelands.  Although tall fescue pasture is common, little research has attempted to document how soil and herbage nutrient concentrations change through time.  This thesis summarizes two studies conducted within the context of a larger grazing systems project near Steele\'s Tavern, VA.  The objectives were to: (1) examine temporal changes in plant available soil nutrient concentrations in four grazing systems, (2) determine how hay feeding and use of improved forages affected soil and herbage nutrient concentrations (3) examine the relationship between and variability within soil and herbage nutrient concentrations, (4) analyze the seasonal variation in herbage mineral concentration with regard to beef cattle requirements, and (5) create a statistical model to predict variation in herbage mineral concentration across the growing season.  Analysis of plant and soil nutrients through 5 years of grazing produced several important findings.  Soil pH, P, and Ca, Mg, and B declined through five years of grazing.  Higher concentrations of herbage N and K and soil P, K, Fe, Zn, and Cu were measured in hay feeding paddocks.  Herbage nutrient concentrations showed less variability in P and K than did soil test results.  Fertility testing in pastures is important to monitor changing nutrient concentrations, and this study showed that herbage analysis may provide a more stable and accurate assessment of pasture fertility than soil testing.  Pasture herbage, grown without fertilization, contained sufficient concentrations of macronutrients to meet the requirements of dry beef cows through the growing season and to meet the requirements of lactating beef cows in April.  A model was developed using soil moisture and relative humidity that predicted (R2 = 0.75) variation in herbage mineral concentration throughout the growing season.  As described in this thesis, use of modeling to predict nutrient dynamics in pasture could allow for more efficient mineral supplementation strategies that lead to improved profitability, nutrient retention, and livestock health.

Abstract:
The goal of this Educational Project is to investigate the characteristics of vocal warm up and cool down activities, as well as their importance for a good vocal health. Any physical activity which requires human effort must be preceded by a warm up in order to prepare the muscles involved in the exercise and to reduce the probability of injury. After exercise, cool down promotes recovery and prevents the onset of muscle pain resulting from the exercise. Singing should include these two procedures to promote the preparation of the vocal apparatus and the recovery of the effort. Through a survey made within the singing community (choir conductors, singing teachers of middle and high school, professional singers and singing college students) an evaluation of the performance of these activities was made, as well as of its methodology. The results were analysed and compared with the introductory state of the art.

Abstract:
Physically, vocally, and physiologically something happens to the actor in rehearsal and performance that can impact the actor’s everyday life. Practitioners have described this as boundary blurring, emotional hangover, and post-dramatic stress. Even acting as a profession can breed stressful situations for the actor. Actors can combat the blurring, the hangover, and the stress through awareness and process. As a part of process, actors warm-up to prepare their bodies and voices and to transition from real life to stage life. An often ignored aspect of process, but no less significant than the warm-up, is the cool down. After researching the acting experience and the cool down, I introduced several student actors to the cool down during two productions and a workshop. Through these practical experiences, this research, and numerous interviews, I have compiled exercises to facilitate the transition between the acting experience and everyday life.

Lynch, Christene Rene. "Studying the magnetic fields of cool stars." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1357.

Abstract:
Magnetic fields are prevalent in a wide variety of low mass stellar systems and play an important role in their evolution. Yet the process through which these fields are generated is not well understood. To understand how such systems can generate strong field structures characterization of these fields is required. Radio emission traces the fields directly and the properties of this emission can be modeled leading to constraints on the field geometry and magnetic parameters. The new Karl Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) provides highly sensitive radio observations. My thesis involves combining VLA observations with the development of magnetospheric emission models in order to characterize the magnetic fields in two fully convective cool star systems: (1) Young Stellar Objects (YSOs); (2) Ultracool dwarf stars. I conducted multi epoch observations of DG Tau, a YSO with a highly active, collimated outflow. The radio emission observed from this source was found to be optically thick thermal emission with no indication of the magnetic activity observed in X-rays. I determined that the outflow is highly collimated very close to the central source, in agreement with jet launching models. Additionally, I constrained the mass loss of the ionized component of the jet and found that close to the central source the majority of mass is lost through this component. Using lower angular resolution observations, I detected shock formations in the extended jet of DG Tau and modeled their evolution with time. Taking full advantage of the upgraded bandwidth on the VLA, I made wideband observations of two UCDs, TVLM513-46 and 2M 0746+20. Combining these observations with previously published and archival VLA observations I was able to fully characterize the spectral and temporal properties of the radio emission. I found that the emission is dominated by a mildly polarized, non-thermal quiescent component with periodic strongly polarized flare emission. The spectral energy distribution and polarization of the quiescent emission is well modeled using gyrosynchrotron emission with a mean field B~100 G, mildly relativistic power-law electrons with a density ne~105-6 cm-3, and source size of R~2R*. We were able to model the pulsed emission by coherent electron cyclotron radiation from a small number of isolated loops of high magnetic field (2-3 kG) with scale heights~1.2-2.7 stellar radii. The loops are well-separated in magnetic longitude, and are not part of a single dipolar magnetosphere. The overall magnetic configuration of both stars appears to confirm recent suggestions that radio over-luminous UCD's have `weak field' non-axisymmetric topologies, but with isolated regions of high magnetic field.

Sebzali, Mohamed. "Assessment of cool thermal storage strategies in Kuwait." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1826/1599.

Full text
Abstract:
The extensive use of air conditioning for indoor cooling in offices and large commercial buildings in Kuwait represents a major part of the power and electricity consumption in that country. The main objective of this research was to investigate ice and chilled water cool thermal storage technologies and operating strategies for air conditioning. This was motivated by the extreme climatic conditions in Kuwait and the necessity to reduce both maximum power demand and energy consumption whilst being economically feasible. This work represents the first such study undertaken. In Kuwait approximately 45% of the total annual exported electrical energy is consumed solely by air conditioning systems as a result of the very high ambient temperatures occurring between March and October. Furthermore, it was estimated air conditioning systems represent about 62% of the peak electrical load. To assess the potential of cool thermal storage, the air conditioning system for an existing clinic building, representing a typical medium size building in Kuwait, was designed with and without a cool thermal storage system. The results demonstrate that internal ice-on-coil and chilled water storage systems are suitable storage technologies that can be implemented in Kuwait. The cooling demand of the clinic building was first estimated using the ESP-r building energy simulation program, following which the different components in the air conditioning systems were sized including chiller, storage tanks, pumps, air handling units for conventional, ice and chilled water storage air conditioning systems operating with load levelling, 50% demand limiting and full storage strategies. The heat gains by different auxiliary components in the air conditioning systems were estimated and the final cooling demand profiles were developed. For each air conditioning design, the power and energy consumption for the design day condition and over the whole year were calculated and analysed. Furthermore, the life cycle costs were determined based on the estimated capital, maintenance, operating costs and a financial analysis was carried out. For the Kuwaiti climate, the results demonstrate ice and chilled water storage systems can reduced the maximum power consumption during the day time when the electricity demand is high and largest reduction in the maximum power achieved full storage strategy. However, the energy consumption of ice storage system operating with 50% demand limiting and full strategies were found were found to be higher than the conventional air conditioning system. Nevertheless, the energy consumption in the ice storage system with a load levelling operating strategy was slightly lower. Chilled water storage system was found to be unlike ice storage system, the energy consumption in all operating strategies improved over the conventional system. Based on the estimated life cycle cost using the actual operating costs for both the government and user, it was established that for the government, ice storage operating with load levelling strategy and all other strategies of the chilled water storage systems would be more economical than conventional systems. However, for the user, load levelling ice storage, load levelling chilled water storage, and 50% demand limiting chilled water storage systems would be more cost effective. Out of all alternatives, chilled water storage system with a load levelling strategy was found to be the most cost effective for the climate of Kuwait and for similar climates of Kuwait. Although, the outcome from this research work can not be generalised however, the method of sizing and energy and economic analysis, which was discussed in this thesis can be generalised and followed to evaluate the impact of cool thermal storage systems on energy performance and economy of the air conditioning systems.

Fry, Glyn. "Marketing, the literary & the logos of cool." Thesis, University of South Wales, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.574489.

Full text
Abstract:
This Dissertation offers a poststructuralist critique of cool across the discourses of marketing and consumer culture. The starting point for this study was an exploration of the ways in which postmodern marketing's engagement with the literary helps consolidate interpretive approaches that claim to offer a deeper understanding of the more nuanced needs of the sovereign consumer. I challenge this Whiggish version of a 'progressive' marketing by problematising its deployment of the literary, with its focus on the use of irony as a mode of subjective knowingness, but which occludes its disruptive 'other'. I draw on Foucault and Belsey to highlight the discursive practices and techniques entailed in the articulation of subjectivity and knowingness. I also highlight the implications of Derrida's challenge to Western culture's dependence on the logo-centric in its inscriptions of the knowing subject that ultimately effaces the play of textuality and the materiality bf the signifier. Consequently, it is proposed that recognising subjectivity as a function of signifying and discursive practice, and not simply as the manifestation of a logocentric rationality or some deeply embedded psychological need or impulse, has profound implications for consumer sovereignty and choice. This study maintains that the shared logocentric assumptions between articulations of ironic knowingness in relation to literary and postmodern theory 'conspire' to valorise the subjective configurations of the sovereign consumer, most notably promoted as cool. While a poststructuralist mode of research is not without its methodological difficulties it proved particularly apposite in offering a reading of how marketing achieves its effects. A key feature of poststructuralist enquiry, as with the uses of irony configured as a challenge to, rather than a manifestation of, knowingness, is to draw attention to the unsettling, disruptive, decentring, tendencies implicit in the linguistic process. But while this makes for a degree of discomfort and frustration, such critiques also constitute a source of creativity and innovation for configuring the world differently. In this regard, a deconstructive cultural history shows marketing to be divided against itself. Marketing both seeks to specify and satisfy clearly determined needs, desires and aspirations, but at the same time constantly effects to unsettle and reconfigure desire. Those deemed to have a cool, percipient sensibility effectively operate as a conduit for this unsettling of desire. The consequence is that almost before consumer satisfaction can be [re]articulated it is running up against a new unsettling of desire. What the study of the discourses of cool indicate is that this unsettling effectively constitutes a 'creative' strategy by which cool maintains its exclusivity over early and late majority consumers, and in driving forward new 'consumer' priorities. This Dissertation argues that it cannot be inconsequential that the material signifying practices entailed in promoting this unsettling also have the effect of achieving a particular resonance with the priorities of late consumer capitalism - the creation of an ever increasing cycle of demand for products and services.

Full text
Abstract:
Observations of many R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars and Hydrogen deficient Carbon (HdC) stars have been obtained to more fully understand the characteristics of these types of objects. A long term photometric programme has been undertaken to observe most of the known RCB and HdC stars, including those in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Photometry has been obtained over durations of 700-1100 d for many of these stars, permitting a more accurate analysis of the light and colour curves of these objects than has been possible with previously published data. Properties of the low amplitude variations, observed in all these stars, are described and analysed using Fourier techniques. By combining the observed periods and estimated temperatures, the latter obtained from spectra, a period temperature relationship is produced for these stars. Most stars have a period that can be identified with a radial pulsation mode from models of hydrogen deficient carbon stars. Theoretical period decrease rates for these types of stars indicate that cooler (T eff ≈ 5000 K) stars should dominate the temperature distribution. This is not observed. The reasons for this apparent lack of cooler stars are discussed. If the evolutionary models are correct, there should be many more cool hydrogen deficient carbon stars still to be discovered. Observations obtained during declines of several RCB stars are discussed. The observations of the 1988 decline of R CrB represent the first occasion where both photometric and spectroscopic observations were obtained during the onset of the decline. For those declines for which extensive photometry is available, a major division in photometric properties is observed during the early stages of the decline. This division, where the colours of the star become either bluer, or redder, may be due to a range of dust formation angles, which alters the relative flux contributions of the photosphere and chromosphere of the star. Additional aspects of two RCB stars, NSV 6708 and RY Sgr, are described in greater detail. For NSV 6708, the low radial velocity amplitude of NSV 6708 (< 4 kms-¹) causes some difficulty for the standard decline model for these stars, which assumes that the dust formation is linked to radial pulsations. For RY Sgr, observed changes in the pulsation period in the star are interpreted with an O-C analysis to the times of maxima. Only a series of linear solutions, which have lifetimes of ~ 10 yrs, satisfy the O-C residuals to within the observational uncertainty. In addition, spectra have been obtained during the shock wave event of RY Sgr, which is seen as a splitting of the absorption lines near Vmax. Low excitation lines have a greater shock amplitude, which is consistent with their formation in the upper regions of the photosphere of the highly extended atmospheres of these stars. Finally, areas where additional progress could be made on the study of these stars are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis examines cool and coolness, both as word and as mode of affective deportment. It treats cool as an historical and literary phenomenon in late twentieth-century Anglo-American culture, during the period between 1945 and the present day. From relatively obscure origins among the subcultures of nineteen-forties African-American inner-city communities, this word, and its cognate forms of disposition towards personal and political agency, diffused through society in the course of these six decades to become, by the turn of the 21st century, near ubiquitous: highly visible, highly recognizable, and closely bound up with certain kinds of social cachet and approval. Through literary-critical analysis I aim to challenge and to deepen the accounts provided by the established literature on the topic, including the work of Lewis MacAdams (2001), Dick Pountain and David Robins (2000), Alan Liu (2004), and Ted Gioia (2009). The narrative emerging from these and other sources offers a unidirectional account of cool's passage through the culture, from fringe to mainstream to wide acceptance - a story that belies the more complex and fractured evolution to which literature can grant us access. An account of cool based in literature and literary analysis reveals how social and political forces, as well as individual authorial interpretations and creative misreadings, established a much more uneven interpretive terrain.

Abstract:

The meaning of cool brands has attracted the attention of many marketing practitioners, but little attention has been given in academia. This study reports the development of a scale measuring characteristics of cool brands and the model is grounded in the accepted paradigm for scale development provided by Churchill (1979). Based on an exploratory qualitative and quantitative analysis (two national samples), a seven-dimension scale of a cool brand is identified: contemporary, singularity, remarkable experience, sub-group, social conscience, classic and preciousness. Construct, nomological and predictive validity is examined, and the relationship of the scale with important outcome variables assessed: brand credibility, consumer satisfaction, perceived quality, self-brand connection and communal-brand connection. The positive results demonstrate the validity and consistency of the scale as well as that most of the Cool Brand Characteristics dimensions were strongly associated with the outcome variables. This dissertation concludes with a brief discussion of the implications of the study for future research and marketing practicesl.

Abstract:
Old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees were sampled in the Sierra Madre Oriental of northeastern Mexico and used to develop a 219-year chronology of earlywood width. This chronology is correlated with monthly precipitation totals from January to June recorded at Saltillo some 55 km northwest of the collection site. The chronology was used to reconstruct winter-spring precipitation (January-June total) from 1782-2000. The reconstruction indicates large interannual, decadal, and multidecadal variability in winter-spring precipitation over Saltillo. This variability is vaguely apparent in the short and discontinuous instrumental record from 1950-1998, with January-June totals ranging from 15 to 310 mm, multiyear droughts, and a negative trend in January-June precipitation over the last 50 years. The reconstruction indicates that severe dryness was prevalent over a 24-year period from 1857-1880. This mid-19th century drought exceeds the duration of any droughts witnessed during the 20th century. However, three episodes of winter-spring dryness have prevailed in the Saltillo region after 1950, a much higher frequency of decadal drought than estimated over the past 219 years and aggravating the regional water supply problems associated with this booming manufacturing and ranching center.

Abstract:

Abstract:
My project is split in two, one theoretical part and one empirical part. The first part is based on existing theories within design and marketing. I focused my research on management theories, research methods and consumer behavior theories. The second part is based upon a case study "Rebirth of the airship", where I test the method identified in the first part. The case study also includes a straight forward design process and a qualitative field research. In the final part of the project I conclude my findings and reflect upon the work method and the result at hand.

Abstract:
Solar cooling research center is being developed on CSEM-UAE outdoor research facility in RAK/UAE.  The research center is capable to test system from 1 TR cooling capacity to 10 TR cooling capacity. The source of heat is solar radiation and heat pipe type evacuated tube solar collectors are used to collect the solar energy. Solar station controls and circulates water in solar collectors and helps charge the hot water stratified tank. While in operation of the solar cooling facility, circulation pumps for hot water, chilled water and rejection circuit have to be continuously operated along with fan coil units, solar station, chiller and cooling tower. These all components require continuous electrical power. Currently, the entire electrical power requirement is supplied by a diesel generator. Since the center is for research activities, most of the time solar cooling center is on no load condition. Thus solar collectors are subjected to saturation. To prevent heat collection during no load conditions solar collectors are covered. Research project carried out to design of the renewable energy powered system to ensure the electricity availability for all the components so that the facility can be operated continuously without fossil fuel. UAE climate is sunny throughout the year thus Photovoltaic will be most prominent as a renewable source in generating electrical power. The PV is subjected to UAE harsh hot and dust environment which affect the performance of the PV. Thus the performance variations of PV due to dust deposition and temperature have analyzed. A matlab simulink model has developed to analyze the energy generation in UAE environment with available weather data. Technical and economical analysis has done for different PV technologies and find out the optimum PV design for the solar cooling center. To prevent the saturation of the solar collectors, a heat rejection unit have designed and installed. The control system for the automatic operation also implemented.

Jones, Hugh Richard Arthur. "Infrared and optical studies of cool low-mass dwarfs." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/28313.

Full text
Abstract:
Infrared and optical studies of cool low-mass dwarfs are made in order to determine their properties. The goal of distinguishing low-mass stars from brown dwarfs is engaged by studies on a number of different fronts. (1) The first infrared spectral sequence of cool dwarfs from GL411 (M2V) to GD165B (>M10V) enables derivation of reliable bolometric luminosities down to the hydrogen burning limit. The strength of the deep water absorption bands is used as the basis of a new reliable method to calculate effective temperatures. We find that GD165B is the only star in the sample that is a good brown dwarf candidate. (2) Expected temperatures, metallicities and gravities of cool dwarfs are compared to inferences from fitting synthetic to observed spectra at the peak of the energy distribution. A good representation of the overall spectral features is found, although the study is limited by (i) the quality of atomic and molecular opacities and (ii) the complex behaviour of atomic lines having strengths which increase with decreasing metallicity down to around -1.5 dex. The comparisons suggest a similar spread in metallicities to that anticipated, although for our sample neither kinematic motion nor membership of a particular photometric class are, on their own, reliable indicators of metallicity. (3) A high resolution study of the strongest water vapour absorption band in cool dwarfs is compared to predictions from a preliminary ab initio computation for water vapour incorporated into a stellar atmosphere calculation. The comparisons show that water vapour lines are formed relatively high in the photosphere at pressures about an order of magnitude lower than atomic lines.

Abstract:
Five projects improve understanding of how to use PCM to reduce building cooling energy. Firstly, a post-installation energy-audit of an active cooling system with PCM tank revealed an energy cost of 10.6% of total cooling energy, as compared to an identical tankless system, because PCM under%cooling prevented heat rejection at night. Secondly, development of a new taxonomy for PCM cooling systems allowed reclassification of all systems and identified under-exploited types. Novel concept designs were generated that employ movable PCM units and insulation. Thirdly, aspects of the generated designs were tested in a passive PCM sail design, installed in an occupied office. Radiant heat transfer, external heat discharge and narrow phase transition zone all improved performance. Fourthly, passive PCM product tests were conducted in a 4.2 m3 thermal test cell in which two types of ceiling tile, with 50 and 70% microencapsulated PCM content, and paraffin/copolymer composite wallboards yielded peak temperature reductions of 3.8, 4.4 and 5.2 °C, respectively, and peak temperature reductions per unit PCM mass of 0.28, 0.34 and 0.14 °C/kg, respectively. Heat discharge of RACUS tiles was more effective due to their non-integration into the building fabric. Conclusions of preceding chapters informed the design of a new system composed of an array of finned aluminium tubes, containing paraffin (melt temperature 19.79 °C, latent heat 159.75 kJ/kg) located below the ceiling. Passive cooling and heat discharge is prioritised but a chilled water loop ensures temperature control on hotter days (water circulated at 13 °C) and heat discharge on hotter nights (water circulated at 10 °C). Test cell results showed similar passive performance to the ceiling tiles and wallboards, effective active temperature control (constant 24.6˚C air temperature) and successful passive and active heat discharge. A dynamic heat balance model with an IES% generated UK office’s annual cooling load and PCM temperature%enthalpy functions predicted annual energy savings of 34%.
