Full textCool collapsible is a project that involves creating an innovative collapsible outdoor table. This thesis work has been performed in collaboration with aka buna design consult in Salzburg, Austria. Aka buna design consult is a design consultant who works with different product lines, cool collapsible is an internal project where the idea is about creating a product field with different collapsible products. As an exchange student and manage to established a contact and resulted in this thesis. The project has focused on finding a function, technology or materials to then transform it into an innovative outdoor table. By extensively worked to define the target group, created a framework for a table format for the typical user. The result was a collapsible table that got its inspiration from nature. A table, that folds up like a flower blooming. By adding an experience of a static product creates a different relation to the table so that it will stand out from today's market.

Full textThe influential theorist, David Bordwell, talks about various modes of watching film: the intellectual, the casual, or the obsessive interaction with cinema practiced by the film-buff. This thesis is an attempt to come to terms with film and film culture in a number of ways. It is first an attempt at reinscribing a notion of aesthetics into film studies. This is not an easy task. I argue that film theory is not adequately equipped to discuss film in affective terms, and that instead, it emphasises ways of thinking about film and culture quite removed from the act of film ‘spectating’ – individually, or perhaps even more crucially, collectively. To my mind, film theory increasingly needs to ask: are theorists and the various subjectivities about whom they theorise watching the same films, and in the same way? My experience of film is, as Tara Brabazon writes about her own experience of film, a profoundly emotional one. Film is a stream of quotation in my own life. It is inextricably wrapped up inside memory (and what Hutcheon calls postmodern nostalgia). Film is experience. I would not know how to communicate what Sergio Leone ‘means’ or The Godfather ‘represents’ without engaging what Barbara Kennedy calls the ‘aesthetic impulse.’ In this thesis, I extrapolate from what film means to me to what it might mean to an abstract notion of culture. For this reason, Chapters Three and Four are necessarily abstract and tentatively bring together an analysis of The Matrix franchise and Quentin Tarantino’s brand of metacinema. I focus on an aesthetics of cinema rather than its politics or ideological fabric. This is not to marginalise such studies (which, in any case, this thesis could not do) but to make space for another perspective, another way of considering film, a new way of recuperating affect.
Magic, Zazralt. "Theoretical stellar atmosphere models for cool stars." Diss., Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, 2014. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bvb:19-173446.
Full textIn cool stars, like the Sun, energy from the inside is transported to its surface by convection, which then can escape into space as radiation that we can observe. Modeling this photospheric transition region – from convective to radiative energy transport – is notoriously challenging due to the inherent three-dimensional (3D) nature of convection itself and the complex non-linear and non-local interaction of the radiation field with the stellar plasma. Astronomers rely on theoretical atmosphere models, which provide the fundamental basis to study and understand stars. The commonly employed one-dimensional (1D) atmosphere models make use of several simplifications, in particular, convection is usually treated with the mixing-length theory (MLT), despite its well-known wrongness simply due to the lack of a considerably improved alternative. Therefore, the only appropriate approach to overcome this issue, is to solve the time-dependent, 3D, hydrodynamic equations coupled a with the realistic treatment of radiative transfer. Due to the soaring computational power in the recent decades, significant progress has been established with the advent of 3D radiative hydrodynamic (RHD) atmosphere simulations. Nowadays, these perform exceedingly well and offer exceptional predictive potential as detailed comparisons with the Sun have repeatedly revealed. Equipped with this matured, powerful tool, I want to address the following three main questions as the aim of my thesis: What are the atmospheric properties of cool stars besides the Sun? Which differences are given between 1D and 3D models? How do the application-based predictions change? To attend to this matter in a systematical approach, I have computed the Stagger-grid, a comprehensive grid of 3D RHD model atmospheres of cool stars covering a wide range in stellar parameters. In this thesis I describe the methods I have applied for the computation of the grid models, and the general properties of the 3D models, as well as their temporal and spatial averages are presented and discussed in detail. Also, the differences between 1D and 3D stratifications are determined, and the details of stellar granulation, the manifestation of subsurface convection, is extensively depicted. Furthermore, I investigated with the Stagger-grid several applications for 3D atmosphere simulations including: spectral line profiles, important for stellar parameter determination, stellar spectroscopy and abundance analysis; limb darkening, necessary for interferometry and extrasolar planet search; and the calibration of the mixing length, which will improve stellar evolution models. The cumulative technical developments of high-resolution observations in the recent years have surpassed the standards of theoretical 1D atmosphere models, thereby, it has given rise to the enhanced demand of improved atmosphere simulations. By providing a comprehensive grid of 3D RHD atmosphere models to the astronomical community, a major contribution has been achieved to live up to the current and future high-precision observations, which ultimately will lead to a better understanding of cool stars.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, an ontology of contemporary cinema is developed using the position assumed by postmodern thinkers (notably Jean Baudrillard) and contemporary filmmakers. Using Baudrillard's perspective it is argued that the cinematic apparatus is an expression of both human curiosity and a desire to place "reality" at a distance. While the spectator seeks involvement with the viewed subject, he or she remains detached from the images which simulate the various "realities" in which he or she becomes "involved" through the act of viewing. The contemporary Western subject is said to crave "meaning" in a universe which is increasingly secular, materialistic, individualistic and, to a certain extent, "virtual". Life is also said to be more ironic, providing illusory concessions such as communication in lieu of interaction, information instead of knowledge, choice in favour of quality, surfaces rather than depth, and images which ultimately extinguish "the real". Moving images may be said to allude to the artificial nature of a "reality" which is itself a human construction. This suggests that the role of the camera is to place both the world and human subjects "at a distance", thereby objectifying (and potentially dehumanising) the subject-objects of the gaze. Many postmodern films are concerned with the functioning of the cinematic apparatus itself, and these films - implicitly and explicitly - deal with the way in which subjectivity is established through the cinematic gaze. "Realism" in the cinema has to a large extent shifted from the documentation of the world, to techniques which problematise the viewer's experience of "reality". Interactivity, faux-verité and the hyperrealism of computer graphic imaging, have contributed to the confusion of various forms of screen "realism", arguably impacting on the viewer's experience of "reality". In another sense, "reality" has been transformed by the blurring of distinctions between high and low cultural paradigms, increasingly evident in work that privileges the showing of "perverse", "profane", "grotesque", "vulgar" and explicit "realities". Boundaries between private and publiC spaces are eroded as the cinematic apparatus takes spectators into increasingly intimate personal spaces, demystifying and popularising the unknown and previously hidden. Considering the influence of commercial and socio-economic factors on the development of contemporary cinema (emphasizing Hollywood), the thesis looks at the aesthetic, thematic and narrative concerns of both mainstream and niche-market films. Focus is given to the socalled postmodern aesthetic which is closely linked to what some critics call recycling (an inability to say anything "new"), some label "empty" (meaningless) and many see as "schizoid" (able to be read in various, often contradictory, ways). The thesis proposes that contemporary (postmodern) cinema is a "pure" form which increasingly sets "reality" at a distance so that it's illusory nature is emphasised. It also demonstrates how contemporary films serve as reflections of a world which is itself nothing but a reflection (artificial construction). Like dreams, fantasies and other "virtual realities", the cinema represents a form of "remembering" which is detached from any particular time or space. In this sense, cinematic moving images enable viewers to engage with aspects of their own humanity which may be quite independent of the "reality" status of the world.

The goal of this Educational Project is to investigate the characteristics of vocal warm up and cool down activities, as well as their importance for a good vocal health. Any physical activity which requires human effort must be preceded by a warm up in order to prepare the muscles involved in the exercise and to reduce the probability of injury. After exercise, cool down promotes recovery and prevents the onset of muscle pain resulting from the exercise. Singing should include these two procedures to promote the preparation of the vocal apparatus and the recovery of the effort. Through a survey made within the singing community (choir conductors, singing teachers of middle and high school, professional singers and singing college students) an evaluation of the performance of these activities was made, as well as of its methodology. The results were analysed and compared with the introductory state of the art.

Full textThe meaning of cool brands has attracted the attention of many marketing practitioners, but little attention has been given in academia. This study reports the development of a scale measuring characteristics of cool brands and the model is grounded in the accepted paradigm for scale development provided by Churchill (1979). Based on an exploratory qualitative and quantitative analysis (two national samples), a seven-dimension scale of a cool brand is identified: contemporary, singularity, remarkable experience, sub-group, social conscience, classic and preciousness. Construct, nomological and predictive validity is examined, and the relationship of the scale with important outcome variables assessed: brand credibility, consumer satisfaction, perceived quality, self-brand connection and communal-brand connection. The positive results demonstrate the validity and consistency of the scale as well as that most of the Cool Brand Characteristics dimensions were strongly associated with the outcome variables. This dissertation concludes with a brief discussion of the implications of the study for future research and marketing practicesl.
