Abstract:
The premise of this thesis is that the ???concrete holographic image???, a laser transmission hologram which has an object or a hologram of an object as its subject, has unique spatial and temporal properties which can suggest a plurality of tenses to a viewer. There is a lack of comprehensive analysis of the holographic representational system within art related theoretical and critical writing and a tendency to analyse individual works only in terms of generalities which apply to the concepts surrounding the holographic medium. While these form an important background for art image production, in some cases corresponding to artists works, the existing written material on the subject is inadequate as a model from which to draw the all important temporal conclusions. To date the critical reception of holograms has made no mention of acuity, the size of the viewing frustum, the depth of the image and scant mention of interference phenomena which are the intrinsic factors which I believe precipitate temporal illusions. Therefore this thesis examines the concrete holographic image in great detail on its own terms, firstly through theories of the basic image forming phenomena of interference and diffraction and secondly through the techniques of production as they have been adapted for the making of my art works. The extent of the metaphorical and allegorical potential of the spatial and temporal properties of the concrete holographic image are put to the ultimate test in a commission for St Brigid???s Church, Coogee. The Shrine of the Sacred Heart commission for St Brigid???s requires a concrete holographic image to facilitate devotion to the Sacred Heart. The Sacred Heart is not a physical thing but a complex, evolving spiritual entity with a realist pictorial history.

In this paper, we analyze strategies for playing Cookie Clicker optimally. While simple to state, the game gives rise to interesting analysis involving ideas from NPhardness, approximation algorithms, and dynamic programming.

Hoy en día las tendencias por lo saludable están en ascenso, las circunstancias de salubridad mundial nos exigen pensar más en el bienestar propio y en las costumbres alimenticias a adoptar para reducir situaciones médicas de riesgo, es necesario adoptar una cultura de comidas saludables buscando soluciones que nos faciliten llevar a cabo actividades relacionadas a ella. El presente trabajo de investigación está basado en la elaboración de contenedores con filtros de etileno, los cuales preservan por más tiempo los alimentos perecibles (frutas y verduras); buscamos replicar y traer al mercado doméstico una experiencia real aplicada hoy en la exportación de estos productos alrededor del mundo; basados en la investigación de mercado del proyecto evidenciamos que nuestro producto facilita el almacenamiento y la conservación de dichos alimentos. Este proyecto muestra las bondades del Filtro de Etileno que alarga la vida de alimentos perecibles a través de un compuesto químico llamado Permanganato de Potasio que, gracias a su propiedad antibacterial y aplicación aprobada para alimentos, elimina las bacterias que producen la oxidación de frutas. En estos momentos donde salir de casa o comprar con frecuencia representa un riesgo para la salud consideramos que nuestro producto solucionará este problema y reducirá considerablemente las perdidas por descomposición. La empresa venderá los productos a través del canal retail, para llegar a más familias peruanas, el precio varía según el tamaño, pequeño S/22.00, mediano: S/29.00 y grande S/39.00. Los filtros de Etileno se importarán de Italia y los envases de vidrio de China.
Today the trends for healthy are on the rise, the circumstances of global health require us to think more about our well-being and the eating habits to adopt to reduce risky medical situations, it is necessary to adopt a culture of healthy meals looking for solutions that facilitate us to carry out activities related to it. The present research work is based on the elaboration of containers with ethylene filters, which preserve perishable foods (fruits and vegetables) for a longer time; We seek to replicate and bring to the domestic market a real experience applied today in the export of these products around the world; Based on the project's market research, we show that our product facilitates the storage and preservation of these foods. This project shows the benefits of the Ethylene Filter that lengthens the life of perishable foods through a chemical compound called Potassium Permanganate that, thanks to its antibacterial property and approved application for food, eliminates bacteria that cause oxidation of fruits. At these times were leaving home or shopping frequently represents a health risk, we believe that our product will solve this problem and considerably reduce losses due to decomposition. The company will sell the products through the retail channel, to reach more Peruvian families, the price varies according to size, small S / 22.00, medium: S / 29.00 and large S / 39.00. Ethylene filters will be imported from Italy and glass containers from China.

Thermoelectric Cooler Design is a Microsoft Windows program to be used as an aid in the design of thermoelectric cooler devices. This program was written to be used to quickly model and compare alternative designs. A couple's optimum coefficient of performance and maximum heat pumping can be quickly determined. Other major features of the program include the ability to change material properties and dimensions of couples, analyze cascaded couples, and graph performance parameters. A brief description of thermoelectric cooler theory, modelling assumptions and complete source code listing is included.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine levels of optimism and pessimism along with the beliefs and expectations of teaching in agricultural education pre-service teachers, and to compare these findings to that of the Gallup Organization's Strengths Finder profiles. The states included in this study were Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The data for this study was collected using web based survey instruments. The population consisted of 61 pre-service agricultural education students. These students were enrolled in an agricultural education teaching methods class during the Fall 2002 semester, and planned on student teaching in a high school agricultural education program during the Spring or Fall 2003 semesters. A demographic survey, the Beliefs and Expectations about the First Year of Teaching, and the Academic Attributional Style Questionnaire (AASQ) were posted on a web site. The Strengths Finder instrument was used by providing each respondent a copy of the book, Now, Discover Your Strengths (Buckingham and Clifton, 2001) and was found at a Gallup organization web site. Overall, respondents believed that they will perform better at the teaching tasks as outlined in the Beliefs and Expectations about the First Year of Teaching than their peers. Only three respondents were excessively pessimistic and only five respondents were overly optimistic as reported by the results of the AASQ. The top five first strengths on the Strengths Finder profile as reported by the respondents were: "Adaptability", "Input", "Achiever", "Learner" and "Developer". Collectively, when the respondents were examined by looking at all three questionnaires, no overly pessimistic theme strengths were identified as measured by the AASQ and the Beliefs and Expectations surveys. A regression analysis, using a step-wise method was conducted. Only one independent variable, "scholarship" had a significant influence on the AASQ scores. Strengths Finder themes "Intellection", "Relator", and "Woo" were identified as being overly optimistic, as measured by the AASQ. All groups felt that they would perform better than their peers at the teaching tasks presented by the Beliefs and Expectations instrument except the Strengths Finder theme "Restorative". This group scored a 0.00, meaning the respondents think they will perform the same as their peers.

Abstract:
The current study investigates the prevalence rate of Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in mainland China. Although some research has investigated the prevalence and characteristics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa in China, virtually no research has been carried out on NES in the indigenous Chinese population. Thus, the primary goal of the current study was to examine NES prevalence and characteristics in China and to compare these prevalence rates and characteristics to published prevalence rates for the USA and also to a sample of college students in the USA. NES has also been linked to various other characteristics of eating pathology so the current study examined these facets as they have received inadequate attention in mainland China. Participants completed survey packets that contained the following measures: Night Eating Questionnaire (NEQ), Night Eating History and Inventory (NEHI), Eating and Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2), and the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). NES prevalence in the Chinese sample was found to be greater than rates for the US and for other countries. However, the NEQ may not be a valid measure for NES screening in the Chinese population. Seven of the 21 participants scoring above the NEQ cut-off, indicating likely cases of clinically diagnosable NES, also met the criteria for anorexia nervosa and one met the criteria for bulimia nervosa. Prevalence of other eating pathological symptomatology in the Chinese sample, such as anorexia nervosa, was also higher than reported rates for American Caucasians. With adjusted body mass index (BMI) norms for China, prevalence of obesity in the Chinese sample was much lower than the rates reported for Americans even though the Chinese participants overall reported consuming foods at a much greater frequency per week.

Abstract:
A thermoacoustic refrigerator that was optimized for preservation of biological samples in space, was modified for use as a cooler for the CV-2095 shipboard radar electronics rack. The thermoacoustic cooler was tested in the laboratory and demonstrated at sea aboard USS DEYO (DD-989). In the laboratory, using a calibrated heat load, the data acquisition system was able to account for the total energy balance to within 4%. At the highest operating power aboard ship, 226.6 Watts of acoustic power was used to provide 419 Walls of useful cooling power, corresponding to a coefficient of performance of 1.85. Taking into account the 53.9% electroacoustic efficiency of the loudspeakers, the Shipboard Electronics ThermoAcoustic Cooler (SETAC) provided one Watt of cooling for each Watt of electrical power input.

Es por ello que un grupo de amigos al ver la necesidad que existe en el sector de postres decide crear a The Cookie Dough Company. Un emprendimiento que tiene como objetivo ofrecer productos de pastelería, cuya base es una de masa de galleta comestible, acompañada de diferentes sabores, los cuales están inspirados en diferentes frutas y postres tradicionales de la pastelería peruana e internacional, dando ello como resultado una primera línea de productos que incluye diferentes sabores. Estas combinaciones permiten que se tenga un equilibrio entre sabores dulces, agrios y amargos. Además, dado que nos encontramos en una tendencia por cuidar el medio ambiente, se ofrece los productos en envases de vidrio, los cuales pueden ser reciclados o reutilizados permitiendo que se disminuya la contaminación ambiental, el cual es un factor importante para todo consumidor en la actualidad, ya que valoran más a las empresas eco friendly, generando que tengamos una imagen positiva para los clientes. In Latin America, there are 49% of young people who are willing to try new experiences, new and unique flavors. Therefore, a group of friends realized that there is a need in the dessert sector and decided to create The Cookie Dough Company. An entrepreneurship that has as purpose to offer pastry products whose base is edible cookie dough, accompanied by different flavors which are inspired in different fruits and traditional desserts of peruvian and international pastry, resulting in a front line of products that includes different flavors. These combinations allow a balance between sweet, sour and bitter flavors. In addition, since the The Cookie Dough Company are in a trend to care the environment, our products are offered in glass containers that can be recycled or reused, allowing environmental pollution to decrease, currently it’s an important factor for every consumer because they value eco friendly companies more, generating a positive image for our customers. These products are targeted to young men and women - adults who are willing to try new products / flavors having the option of being able to purchase a cookie dough on virtual platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

A method for preserving transplant organs for extended periods of time has been developed in the transplant organ preservation cooler. The preservation cooler enhances organ viability by maintaining a temperature controlled organ bath and pumping perfusate through the transplant organ. The emphasis on the transplant organ preservation cooler is to provide a simple and portable system which will be powered by boiled off oxygen from a liquid oxygen source. The design of the preservation cooler pump and temperature control system are presented. Results of tests proving the successful operation of the preservation cooler prototype are also presented.

Abstract:

The project was made in cooperation with Coffee Queen AB, Arvika. The task was to develop and design a new cooler for the milk to Jura Impressa X9, an espresso machine. The good assistance with staff at Coffee Queen and engineers in China and at KPA in Karlstad led to a solution to the problem. It was a long road to get there, many different concepts was developed. When the day came to decide which concept to work with, the choice stood between two different technical solutions. Alt 1: The classic mini-fridge with today’s technique but a new design. Alt 2: Thermos with external cooling and a design which follows the X9. We choice alt 2 because of the fact that part of the production would fit Coffee Queens factory and therefore would it be possible to keep the costs down. The fact that it is a totally new idea in this business made it even more interesting and easier to make a choice. Both design and function is new, which make it interesting to keep working with. In cooperation with engineers in China there will be made a construction so they can make all necessary tests. This will probably happen autumn 2006. The new technique which the group has come up with is that all technique lays external, in a shell made of polypropen, which make it possible to clean the thermos in the dishwasher. Thermos: Vacuum-shaped in stainless steel with bottom of aluminium, covered with a protected surface, that works like a cold plate. Shell made of pp: shape-molding in polypropen and enclose the coolingsystem. This system are Peltiere, where the cooling is generated, spacer block and heat sink, where the heat are led away, and the fan which takes in cold air and blows out warm. The project has become much larger than Coffee Queen expected from the beginning so they will continue this work even after the students have done their share of the project. The new technique is the big question which requires more tests. These tests will carry through as soon as the group has sent all drafts of design and all info that has been gathered during the project. When the factory in China has made a construction of it they will send it to Coffee Queen and the project-group will be contacted to have a chance to take part of these tests.


Projektet genomfördes i samarbete med Coffee Queen AB i Arvika. Uppgiften bestod i att utveckla och formge en ny förvaring av mjölk till kylning till espressomaskinen Jura Impressa X9. Genom nära samarbete med personalen på Coffee Queen samt ingenjörer i Kina och på KPA i Karlstad togs en lösning fram. Vägen dit var lång. Efter att konceptvalet gjordes stod det mellan två olika tekniska lösningar. Alt 1: Klassiskt minikylskåp med befintlig teknik men ny formgivning. Alt 2: Termos med dockningsstation med kylanordning i och formgivning som följer X9:an. Då delar av tillverkningen skulle passa Coffee Queens fabriker, vilket kan bidra till att hålla kostnaderna relativt låga, valde studenterna alt 2. Att det sedan är en helt ny idé som ännu inte finns i branschen bidrog till att valet underlättades. Både funktionen och designen hade ett nyhetsvärde som var värt att jobba vidare med, enligt Coffee Queen. Under hösten 2006 kommer det att göras tester av en prototyp. Denna prototyp med den nya tekniken kommer att konstrueras av ingenjörer i Kina. Den teknik som studenterna arbetat fram bygger på att all teknik ligger i dockningsstationen och termosen skall vara anpassad för att kunna rengöras i diskmaskin. Termos: Vakuumformad i rostfritt stål med en botten av lackad aluminium. Aluminiumplattan fungerar som en kylplatta och lacken ser till att mjölk och aluminium inte kommer i kontakt med varandra, vilket är ett måste för att uppfylla livsmedelskraven. Dockningsstation: Formsprutas i plast och innesluter kylanläggningen. Denna anläggning innefattar peltiereelement, där själva kylan genereras, kylfläns och kylblock, där värmen leds bort, samt fläkt som suger in kall luft och blåser ut varm. Då projektet visat sig bli mycket större än Coffee Queen från början räknat med, kommer detta att resultera i fortsatt arbete från deras sida. Den del som inte kunnat arbetats igenom är själva kylanordningen, då det är en ny teknik som kräver tester. Dessa tester kommer att genomföras så fort som projektgruppen har lämnat alla formgivningsförslag och det som tagits fram under projektets gång. När en prototyp har tagits fram av ingenjörerna i Kina kommer den att sändas till Coffee Queen för att genomgå tester. När det är dags för dessa tester kommer projektgruppen att kontaktas för att få chansen till att vara med och ta del av dessa.

Today air cooled chillers are often used in industrial applications where chilled water is pumped through processes or laboratory equipment. Industrial chillers are used for the controlled cooling of products, mechanisms and factory machinery in a wide range of industries. However, there is limited information on condenser coil design for a simulated model that uses R407c in a process chiller system with a focus on the finned tube condenser design. Therefore, a simulation tool that evaluates the performance of a condenser design, e.g. frontal area, cost, and overall system efficiency would be very useful. An optimization calculator for the air cooled fin-tube condenser design was developed. This calculator allows a user to specifically select the condenser geometric design parameters including the overall condenser length and height, number of rows, number of circuits, row and tube spacing, fin thickness, fin density, tube inner and outer diameters, and the quantity and power of the fan motors. This study applied the calculator finding an optimum condenser design for various frontal areas and cost constraints. The calculator developed is appropriate for engineering designers for use in the process chiller industry.

Abstract:
This master thesis project within product development is established for Electrolux. The project was a collaboration between the Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University and Electrolux department Healthy Home. The goal with this project was to deliver a concept proposal for Electrolux on a product with the purpose to cool one individual, a concept called “Personal cool”. The project concerns the cooling of one individual, cooling in this case meaning to lower the temperature to achieve a greater comfort for the user. The concepts should consider feasibility as well as usability. The developed concept should be able to be produced within 3-4 years. In order to deliver a feasible concept within the project scope, the developed concept should use existing technologies and components. To achieve the set goal, to deliver a concept proposal for Electrolux, the project’s intention was to answer the following research questions: What technology could be integrated in a personal cool? Which main components can be identified for the chosen technology? What are the requirements for a personal cool? The project included various stages and methods to achieve the delivered result. Activities such as research, market analysis, consumer survey, concept development, calculations, prototypes and CAD-models were implemented. The customer needs and desires were collected and combined with the given project requirements set by Electrolux. The outcome of this resulted in a requirement specification, which was used to eliminate the identified technologies and the developed concepts. The result was to use Peltier Modules as the technology to generate cold for the concept. The main components were identified to be Peltier modules, heat sinks and fans. These were selected after performance calculations. The goal was achieved and the research questions are answered. The results of this project are considered to be successful. The developed concept of a Personal cool includes the selected technology, the main components as well as internal and outer design. Finally, it can be concluded that this project contributes to an innovative concept for Electrolux, when this product category and technology is not existing within the department, Healthy Home, at Electrolux.
Detta examensarbete är ett produktutvecklingsprojekt som är framtaget för Electrolux. Projektet var ett samarbete med Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan, Lunds Universitet och Electrolux avdelning Healthy Home. Målet med projektet var att ta fram ett konceptförslag till Electrolux på en produkt med avsikt att kyla en person, ett koncept som kallas ”Personal cool”. Projektet avser kylning av en individ, med kylning i detta fall menas att sänka temperaturen för att uppnå en ökad komfort för användaren. Konceptet hade som avsikt att beakta genomförbarhet samt användarvänlighet. Det framtagna konceptet skulle vara möjligt att producera inom 3-4 år, därför skulle existerande teknik och befintliga komponenter användas. För att uppnå målet att leverera ett konceptförslag till Electrolux hade projektet som avsikt att besvara följande forskningsfrågor: Vilken teknik kan integreras i konceptet ”Personal cool”? Vilka huvudsakliga komponenter kan identifieras för den valda tekniken? Vilka är kraven för en ”Personal cool”? Projektet innehöll olika steg och metoder för att uppnå det levererade resultatet. Aktiviteter så som efterforskningar, marknadsundersökning, enkätstudie, konceptutveckling, beräkningar, prototyper samt CAD-modeller gjordes. Kundernas behov och krav sammanställdes och sammanslogs med de givna projektkraven satta av Electrolux. Det resulterande i en kravspecifikation som användes för att utvärdera de identifierande teknikerna samt koncepten. Resultatet blev att använda sig av Peltier-moduler som teknik i konceptet. Komponenterna som identifierades var Peltier-moduler, kylflänsar och fläktar. Dessa valdes efter beräkningar för att fastställa kapaciteten. Målet med projektet är uppnått och forskningsfrågorna är besvara, därav anses resultat av projekt vara framgångsrikt. Det framtagna konceptet på en ”Personal cool” innefattar vald teknik, huvudkomponenterna så väl som inre- och yttre design. Avslutningsvis kan konstateras att projektet bidrar till ett innovativt koncept för Electrolux, då denna produktkategori och teknik inte innefattas inom området på avdelningen Healthy Home.

This thesis explore the use of Cultural and Politcal narratives in Roberts Coover’s fiction. Coover’s writing questions the validity of the monolithic grand narratives within our society, and complicates the grand narrative by subverting its conventions with the comic and the erotic. The tone of the narrative, while often absurd or grotesque, offers distinctive insight into modern culture. In Coover’s work these themes meld with society’s libidinal urge for the absurd, the sexual, and the ritualized archaic. His characters are often faced with overt savagery and violence, but are also surrounded by high culture and idealism. In examining these notable works of Coover, spanning over fifteen years, patterns emerge throughout his oeuvre. The shifting of Cold War politics, the carnivalesque, theatrics, history, politics, and the exploration of metanarratives are present throughout these works. In navigating these cultural and political structures, Coover’s writing deconstructs these ideological concepts, and in turn both affirms and subverts them.

Abstract:
A significant factor in the overall efficiency of the balance of plant for a future magnetic fusion energy (MFE) reactor is the thermal performance of the divertor. A significant fraction of the reactor power is delivered to the divertor as plasma impurities and fusion products are deposited on its surface. For an advanced MFE device, an average divertor heat load of 10 MW/m² is expected at steady-state operating conditions. Helium cooling of the divertors is one of the most effective ways to accommodate such a heat load. Several helium-cooled divertor designs have been proposed and/or studied during the past decade including the T-Tube divertor, the helium-cooled flat plate (HCFP) divertor, the helium-cooled multi-jet (HEMJ) divertor, the helium-cooled modular divertor with integral fin array (HEMP), and the helium-cooled modular divertor with slot array (HEMS). All of these designs rely on some form of heat transfer enhancement via impinging jets or cooling fins to help improve the heat removal capability of the divertor. For all of these designs very large heat transfer coefficients on the order of 50-60 kW/m²-K have been predicted. As the conditions of a fusion reactor and associated helium flow conditions (600 °C and 10 MPa) are difficult to achieve safely in a controlled laboratory environment, the study of these divertors often relies on computer simulations and experimental modeling at non-prototypical, albeit dynamically similar, conditions. Earlier studies were based on the assumption that, for geometrically similar divertor test modules, dynamic similarity can be achieved by matching only the Reynolds number. Experiments conducted in this investigation using different coolants and test module materials have shown this assumption to be false. Modified correlations for the Nusselt number and loss coefficients for the HEMJ and HEMP-like divertor modules have been developed. These have been used to develop generalized performance curves to predict the divertor performance, i.e. the maximum allowable heat flux and corresponding pumping power fraction, at prototypical conditions. Additionally, a numerical study has been performed to optimize the fin array geometry of the HEMP-like divertor module. The generalized correlations and performance curves developed in this investigation can be incorporated into system design codes, thereby allowing system designers to optimize the divertor geometry and operating conditions.

Following the abolition of Transatlantic slavery, the British introduced a new scheme of labour to replace the former. 'Indian indentureship', as it was referred to, affected nearly 2 million Indian coolies who defied the traditional ban against crossing the kala pani (dark waters) in order to work on plantations in countries such as British Guiana, Trinidad, Malaya, South Africa and Fiji. In effect, the Indian labour: diaspora emerged and established itself across the globe. Despite over 100 years of labouring and contributing to the development of their new homes, the coolies and their descendents still face political, social and cultural marginalization. The aim of this thesis is to explore the consequences of indentureship in various societies through a parallelization of inter-national coolie conditions as represented by writers of the diaspora. The three areas selected for this study are Guyana, Malaysia and Fiji. David Dabydeen (Guyana), K.S.Maniam (Malaysia) and Satendra Nandan (Fiji) all share the impetus to disclose the past as a portal into the present, thereby dismpting normative time, and by implication, a fixed sense of history. However; the most striking similarity between these writers, despite their geographical and social distance, is their literary method which centres on the theory of coolitude. Coolitude was coined by Khal Torabully as a means of recuperating the voiceless coolie, firstly, by re-membering the sea voyage across the kizla pani and secondly, by highlighting the coolie's place in the mosaic of multicultural societies. Chapter 1 details the historical, theoretical and methodical foundations of the thesis. Chapter 2 explores Dabydeen's novels The Counting House and Our Lady of Demerara while Chapter 3 is a detailed study of Maniam's novels The Return and In A Far Country. The final chapter considers Nandan's novel The Wounded Sea and collection of poetry Lines Across Black Waters. Each literary analysis seeks to understand how coolitude, as a means to historically and politically place the coolie in the current world,: links spaces between countries both through a shared colonial history and a common postcolonial condition.

A empresa Cooper A1 tem sua matriz localizada na cidade de Palmitos – SC, atua com 16 filiais no Oeste de Santa Catarina e Noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Iniciou a atividade na década de 1930, onde conseguiu despertar o interesse dos primeiros 18 agricultores em investir no negócio. A Cooper A1 é a cooperativa de produção mais antiga do Estado de Santa Catarina de funcionamento ininterrupto. Recebe uma média anual superior a 167 mil toneladas de milho, mais de 20 mil toneladas de soja e mais três mil toneladas de trigo. A maior parte da produção recebida é dos associados, sendo que a cooperativa também adquire grãos de outros mercados para suprir a demanda de matéria prima para fabricação e formulação de rações em suas fábricas. Atualmente, a capacidade estática de armazenamento de grãos da Cooper A1 é superior a 1,3 milhões de sacas. Já a capacidade de secagem foi expandida para mais de 60 mil sacas/dia. Esta grande capacidade, permite que o associado decida quanto tempo seu produto fica armazenado, podendo escolher a melhor época para comercializar sua produção. O trabalho objetivou uma avaliação técnica e comercial da empresa Cooper A1 com ênfase na comercialização de sementes de Soja, Aveia, Trigo, Azevém e Capim-Sudão. Coletaram-se dados da comercialização dessas culturas, dos anos de 2007 à 2011, formando um banco de dados que auxilia nas decisões futuras para implantação de uma Unidade de Beneficiamento de Sementes. No decorrer desses anos, a venda de sementes aumentou gradativamente, e a perspectiva de aumento da área de abrangência de atuação da Cooper A1, principalmente no estado do Rio Grande do Sul, verificam-se reais possibilidades de aumento na comercialização de sementes, caracterizando um forte indicador da possibilidade de entrada da empresa no negócio de produção de sementes.
The company Cooper A1 has its matrix located in the city of Palmitos – SC, operates with 16 branches in the West of Santa Catarina and Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul states. The Cooper A1 is the oldest cooperative production of the State of Santa Catarina uninterrupted operation. This large capacity allows the associated decide how long your product is stored, choosing the best time to market their production. The work aimed to evaluate the technical and commercial company Cooper A1 with emphasis on commercialization of seeds of soy, oats, wheat, ryegrass and Sudão grass. Data were collected on the marketing of these crops the years from 2007 to 2011, forming a database that helps future decisions for implantation of a Unit of Seed Processing. During those years, the sale of seeds increased gradually, and the prospect of increasing area of operation of the Cooper A1, mainly in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, real possibilities of increase commercialization of seeds, characterizing a strong indicator of the possibility of entry of the company in the business of producing seeds.

Abstract:
A study was undertaken to create a finite element model of a cooled throat converging/diverging rocket nozzle to be used as a tool in designing a cooled aerospike nozzle. Using ABAQUS, a simplified 2D axisymmetric model was created featuring only the copper throat and stainless steel support ring, which were brazed together for the experimental test firings. This analysis was a sequentially coupled thermal/mechanical model. The steady state thermal data matched closely to experimental data. The subsequent mechanical model predicted a life of over 300 cycles using the Manson-Halford fatigue life criteria. A mesh convergence study was performed to establish solution mesh independence. This model was expanded by adding the remainder of the parts of the nozzle aft of the rocket motor so as to attempt to match the transient nature of the experimental data. This model included variable hot gas side coefficients in the nozzle calculated using the Bartz coefficients and mapped onto the surface of the model using a FORTRAN subroutine. Additionally, contact resistances were accounted for between the additional parts. The results from the preliminary run suggested the need for a parameter re-evaluation for cold side gas conditions. Parametric studies were performed on contact resistance and cold side film coefficient. This data led to the final thermal contact conductance of k=0.005 BTU/s•in.•°R for contact between metals, k=0.001 BTU/s•in.•°R for contact between graphite and metal, and h=0.03235 BTU/s2•in.•°R for the cold side film coefficient. The transient curves matched closely and the results were judged acceptable. Finally, a 3D sector model was created using identical parameters as the 2D model except that a variable cold side film condition was added. Instead of modeling a symmetric one or two inlet/one or two outlet cooling channel, this modeled a one inlet/one outlet nozzle in which the coolant traveled almost the full 360° around the cooling annulus. To simplify the initial simulation, the model was cut at the barrier between inlet and outlet to form one large sector, rather than account for thermal gradients across this barrier. This simplified nozzle produced expected data, and a 3D full nozzle model was created. The cold side film coefficients were calculated from previous experimental data using a simplified 2D finite difference approach. The full nozzle model was created in the same manner as the 2D full nozzle model. A mesh convergence study was performed to establish solution mesh independence. The 3D model results matched well to experimental data, and the model was considered a useful tool for the design of an oxidizer cooled aerospike nozzle.

Lo scopo di questo lavoro di tesi, svolto presso la Fores Engineering di Forlì, società del gruppo Rosetti Marino, è di studiare il sistema di raffreddamento di un gas di sintesi ad alta temperatura, andando a supportare la progettazione di dettaglio sviluppata da Fores. Il raffreddamento avviene in due apparecchiature poste in serie: un quencher che porta il gas da 1100 °C a 500 °C, e, a seguire, uno scambiatore (secondary cooler) che raffredda il gas fino a 300 °C. Durante l’esperienza di tirocinio è stato richiesto di dimensionare entrambe le apparecchiature, tenendo presenti alcuni vincoli progettuali richiesti dal processo. Il fluido di raffreddamento è acqua in pressione che evapora parzialmente, per cui è stato necessario considerare tutte le problematiche e gli aspetti peculiari connessi a queste particolari condizioni. Il quencher fa parte di un impianto pilota oggetto di revamping e svolge un ruolo fondamentale all’interno del processo in quanto il successo di quest’ultimo è strettamente correlato al modo in cui viene condotto il raffreddamento. N.b. Poiché questo impianto è oggetto di brevetto, in questa tesi non sarà esplicitato niente che possa tradire il segreto industriale: pertanto non verranno riportate informazioni specifiche come, ad esempio, le sostanze coinvolte, ma solamente informazioni generali che permettano comunque di ottenere una buona descrizione del sistema.

We report on conductance measurements in carbon nanotube based double quantum dots connected to two normal electrodes and a central superconducting finger. By operating our devices as Cooper pair beam splitters, we provide evidence for Crossed Andreev Reflection (CAR). We inject Cooper pairs in the superconducting electrode and measure the differential conductance at both left and right arm. The contacts split the device into two coupled quantum dots. Each of the quantum dots can be tuned by a lateral sidegate. If the two sidegates are tuned such that both quantum dots are at a transmission resonance, a considerable part of the injected Cooper pairs splits into different normal contacts. On the contrary, if only one of the two dots is at resonance, nearly all pairs tunnel to the same normal contact. By comparing different triple points in the double dot stability diagram, we demonstrate the contribution of split Cooper pairs to the total current. In this manner, we are able to extract a splitting efficiency of up to 50% in the resonant case. Carbon Nanotubes ensure ballistic transport and long spin-flip scattering lengths. Due to these properties they are promising candidates to investigate EPR-type correlations in solid state systems.

Abstract:
Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) are a group of metallic alloys that have the ability to return to some previously defined shape or size when subjected to an appropriate thermal cycling procedure. In recent years there has been a lot of research on the development of small, light and, yet, powerful actuators for use in areas like robotics, prosthetics, biomimetics, shape control and grippers. Many of the miniaturized conventional actuators do not have sufficient power output to be useful and SMAs can be used advantageously here. The widespread use of SMAs in actuators is limited by their low bandwidth. Use of SMAs in two-way actuators requires that they undergo thermal cycling (heating and cooling). While SMAs can be heated quickly by resistive heating, conventional convection cooling mechanisms are much slower as the exothermic austenitic to martensitic phase transformation is accompanied by the release of significant amount of latent heat. While a number of cooling mechanisms have been studied in SMA actuator literature, most of the cooling mechanisms involve unidirectional forced convection. This may not be the most effective method. Oscillating flow in a channel can sometimes enhance heat transfer over a unidirectional flow. One possible explanation for this heat transfer enhancement is that the oscillatory flow creates a very thin Stokes viscous boundary-layer and hence a large time-dependent transverse temperature gradient at the heated wall. Therefore heat transfer takes place at a large temperature difference, thereby enhancing the heat transfer. In this work, the heat transfer from an SMA actuator under an oscillating channel is investigated and is compared to steady, unidirectional flow heat transfer. Oscillating flow is simulated using a finite volume based method. The resulting velocity field is made use of in solving the heat transfer problem using a finite difference scheme. A parametric study is undertaken to identify the optimal flow conditions required to produce the maximum output for a given geometry of the SMA actuator. The latent heat of transformation of the SMA is accounted for by means of a temperature dependent specific heat.

Abstract:
Phase-change heat transfer is an important process used in many engineering thermal designs. Boiling is an important phase change phenomena as it is a common heat transfer process in many thermal systems. Phase change processes are critical to thermodynamic cycles as most closed loop systems have an evaporator, in which the phase change process occurs. There are many applications/processes in which engineers employ the advantages of boiling heat transfer, as they seek to improve heat transfer performance. Recent research efforts have experimentally shown that nanofluids can have significantly better heat transfer properties than those of the pure base fluids, such as water. The objective of this study is to improve the boiling curve of de-ionized water by adding aluminum oxide nanopthesiss in 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% wt concentrations in a sub-cooled pool boiling apparatus. Enhancement to the boiling curve can be quantified in two ways: (i) the similar heat fluxes of de-ionized water at smaller excess temperature, indicating similar quantity of heat removal at lower temperatures and (ii) greater heat fluxes than de-ionized water at similar excess temperatures indicating better heat transfer at similar excess temperatures. In the same fashion, the secondary objective is to increase the convective heat transfer coefficient due to boiling by adding different concentrations of aluminum oxide nanopthesiss.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main objective of this study to determine the air-side heat transfer and pressure drop performance characteristics of commercially available round and elliptical fined tubes. A . computer code to compare the performance of industrial forced and induced draught aircooled heat exchangers (henceforth referred to as f\CHE's) commonly found in the petrochemical industry is also developed. The comparison is extended to include both round and elliptical finned tubes. From the tests conducted, it is found that there is generally an increase in the heat transfer parameter with a decrease in the fin pitch. The decrease in the fin pitch however also results in an increase in the pressure drop across the tube bundle. The performance of the tubes is compared with round reference tubes having circular or plate fins for which performance correlations are available in the literature. The fan power required by an induced draught aircooled heat exchanger is found to be higher than that required by a forced draught heat exchanger rejecting the same amount of heat.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die hoofdoel van hierdie studie is om die werksverrigting van industriële geforseerde trek -- en geinduseerde trek lugverkoelde warmteruilers (LVWR) soos algemeen aangetref in die petrochemiese nywerheid te vergelyk. Warmteruiier bundels word gewoonlik opgebou uit ronde vinbuise. Die werksverrigting van laasgenoemde word vergelyk met die werksverrigting van warmteruiier bundels wat gebruik maak van elliptiese vinbuise. Die werksverrigting van 'n reeks kommersieël verkrygbare ronde en elliptiese vinbuise word deur middel van toetsing bepaal. In die algemeen word 'n toename in die warmteoordrag-parameter waargeneem met In afname in die vinsteek. 'n Toename in die vinsteek gaan egter gepaard met" 'n toename in die drukverlies oor die bundel. Die werksverrigting van hierdie buise word vergelyk met bestaande korrelasies vir die werksverrigting van ronde verwysingsbuise wat gebruik maak van ronde of plaatvinne.
