Full textThis study is a sociological exploration of Evangelical Protestantism under the perspective of divine and human enunciations. It aims to grasp those enunciations as configuring both the individual religious experience and the constitution of the local congregation and, more broadly, of Evangelicalism. The investigation is based on testimonies drawn from an Evangelical French website whose purpose is to evangelize, and on an ethnographic fieldwork done in Evangelical Swiss churches. It appears that there are different ways, for the believers, to relate to God as far as being an Evangelical has to do with hearing God's voice on an oracular mode, either thru the bible (Classical Evangelicalism and Fundamentalism), or thru the believer's body (Pentecotalism and Charismatism). Therefore, this study traces the birth of an ability - the ability to hear God on an immediate basis, and thus the possibility of participating in the life of congregation - and its obliteration, that is the suspicion that some Evangelicals feel towards divine enunciations as the believers face a conflict in their congregation. At the end, the analysis reveals the effects, on the architecture of the religious collectives, of a spirituality whose typical features is to postulate God's immedicay to the believer, and to refuse explicitly all form of institutional mediation

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to analyze the subjective phenomenon that is the mystic subject religious conversion's, using the psychoanalitic theory and more particulary thanks to concepts such as the invocatory drive and the voice. From the book « Confessions » of Saint Augustin, we are going to analyze how God's call affected him in his religious conversion. Indeed, in this work he testifes to the search for his faith in God, but also, to his conversion by wondering about the major riddles of his existence. For that purpose, we wonder about God's voice statuts and about the fantastical place that the divine figure occupies for Saint Augustin.Actually, the voice of Lord seems to print it self over of the primal repression. It is the unconscious cause of desire and it seems to impose itself as the « a » object. This divine voice would be covering the primal repression issue. It is not heared though the ear, it is experienced. It is a source of enjoyement, classified as an archaïc enjoyement

Full textVoice Conversion (VC) aims at transforming the characteristics of a source speaker’s voice in such a way that it will be perceived as being uttered by a target speaker. The principle of VC is to define mapping functions for the conversion from one source speaker’s voice to one target speaker’s voice. The transformation functions of common State-Of-The-Art (START) VC system adapt instantaneously to the characteristics of the source voice. While recent VC systems have made considerable progress over the conversion quality of initial approaches, the quality is nevertheless not yet sufficient. Considerable improvements are required before VC techniques can be used in an professional industrial environment. The objective of this thesis is to augment the quality of Voice Conversion to facilitate its industrial applicability to a reasonable extent. The basic properties of different START algorithms for Voice Conversion are discussed on their intrinsic advantages and shortcomings. Based on experimental evaluations of one GMM-based State-Of-The-Art VC approach the conclusion is that most VC systems which rely on statistical models are, due to averaging effect of the linear regression, less appropriate to achieve a high enough similarity score to the target speaker required for industrial usage. The contributions established throughout this thesis work lie in the extended means to a) model the glottal excitation source, b) model a voice descriptor set using a novel speech system based on an extended source-filter model, and c) to further advance IRCAM’s novel VC system by combining it with the contributions of a) and b)

Full textAs social animals, humans communicate with each other by transmitting various types of information about the world and about themselves. At the heart of this process, the voice allows the transmission of linguistic messages denoting a strict meaning that can be decoded by the interlocutor. By conveying other information such as attitudes or emotions that connote the strict meaning, the voice enriches and enhances the communication process. In the last few decades, the digital world has become an important part of our lives. In many everyday situations, we are moving away from keyboards, mice and even touch screens to interactions with voice assistants or even virtual agents that enable human-like communication with machines. In the emergence of a hybrid world where physical and virtual reality coexist, it becomes crucial to enable machines to capture, interpret, and replicate the emotions and attitudes conveyed by the human voice. This research focuses on speech social attitudes, which can be defined - in a context of interaction - as speech dispositions towards others and aims to develop algorithms for their conversion. Fulfilling this objective requires data, i.e. a collection of audio recordings of utterances conveying various vocal attitudes. This research is thus built out of this initial step in gathering raw material - a dataset dedicated to speech social attitudes. Designing such algorithms involves a thorough understanding of what these attitudes are both in terms of production - how do individuals use their vocal apparatus to produce attitudes? - and perception - how do they decode those attitudes in speech? We therefore conducted two studies, a first uncovering the production strategies of speech attitudes and a second - based on a Best Worst Scaling (BWS) experiment - mainly hinting at biases involved in the perception such vocal attitudes, thus providing a twofold account for how speech attitudes are communicated by French individuals. These findings were the basis for the choice of speech signal representation as well as the architectural and optimisation choices for the design of a speech attitude conversion algorithm. In order to extend the knowledge on the perception of vocal attitudes gathered during this second study to the whole database, we worked on the elaboration of a BWS-Net allowing the detection of mis-communicated attitudes, and thus provided clean data for conversion learning. In order to learn how to convert vocal attitudes, we adopted a transformer-based approach in a many-to-many conversion paradigm with mel-spectrogram as speech signal representation. Since early experiments revealed a loss of intelligibility in the converted utterances, we proposed a linguistic conditioning of the conversion algorithm through incorporation of a speech-to-text module. Both objective and subjective measures have shown the resulting algorithm achieves better performance than the baseline transformer both in terms of intelligibility and attitude conveyed

Full textIn recent years, advances in wireless communication technology have led to the widespread use of cellular phones. Because of noisy environmental conditions and competing surrounding conversations, users tend to speak loudly. As a consequence, private policies and public legislation tend to restrain the use of cellular phone in public places. Silent speech which can only be heard by a limited set of listeners close to the speaker is an attractive solution to this problem if it can effectively be used for quiet and private communication. The motivation of this research thesis was to investigate ways of improving the naturalness and the intelligibility of synthetic speech obtained from the conversion of silent or whispered speech. A Non-audible murmur (NAM) condenser microphone, together with signal-based Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) mapping, were chosen because promising results were already obtained with this sensor and this approach, and because the size of the NAM sensor is well adapted to mobile communication technology. Several improvements to the speech conversion obtained with this sensor were considered. A first set of improvement concerns characteristics of the voiced source. One of the features missing in whispered or silent speech with respect to loud or modal speech is F0, which is crucial in conveying linguistic (question vs. Statement, syntactic grouping, etc. ) as well as paralinguistic (attitudes, emotions) information. The proposed estimation of voicing and F0 for converted speech by separate predictors improves both predictions. The naturalness of the converted speech was then further improved by extending the context window of the input feature from phoneme size to syllable size and using a Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) instead of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for the dimension reduction of input feature vector. The objective positive influence of this new approach of the quality of the output converted speech was confirmed by perceptual tests. Another approach investigated in this thesis consisted in integrating visual information as a complement to the acoustic information in both input and output data. Lip movements which significantly contribute to the intelligibility of visual speech in face-to-face human interaction were explored by using an accurate lip motion capture system from 3D positions of coloured beads glued on the speaker's face. The visual parameters are represented by 5 components related to the rotation of the jaw, to lip rounding, upper and lower lip vertical movements and movements of the throat which is associated with the underlying movements of the larynx and hyoid bone. Including these visual features in the input data significantly improved the quality of the output converted speech, in terms of F0 and spectral features. In addition, the audio output was replaced by an audio-visual output. Subjective perceptual tests confirmed that the investigation of the visual modality in either the input or output data or both, improves the intelligibility of the whispered speech conversion. Both of these improvements are confirmed by subjective tests. Finally, we investigated the technique using a phonetic pivot by combining Hidden Markov Model (HMM)-based speech recognition and HMM-based speech synthesis techniques to convert whispered speech data to audible one in order to compare the performance of the two state-of-the-art approaches. Audiovisual features were used in the input data and audiovisual speech was produced as an output. The objective performance of the HMM-based system was inferior to the direct signal-to-signal system based on a GMM. A few interpretations of this result were proposed together with future lines of research

Full textThis dissertation focuses on medieval orality’s representation. It questions the very notion of « representation » by challenging the fundamental assumption of the equivalency between the oral and written communication systems .The issue of the relationship between writing and orality (I) is introduced through a brief examination of the notion of phonocentrism (I, 1). A category of orality markers involving non-resemblance representational models has been created to address this as a representational rather than a grammatical issue (I, 2). Then we analyze both medieval and oral salient characteristics (variation, imprecision, and improvisation) illustrated by our literary and inquisitorial corpus (I, 3). Finally, we will examine the way our texts depict their own representation of writing and orality (I, 4) The ad hoc development of a new linguistic category allows us to consider the markers of orality as new areas of analysis rather than mere representations of orality (II). The notion of medieval variance will be used to develop an analytical model as the basis for a « pragmaphilology », i.e. a discourse involving the combinatory possibilities of the orality markers (II, 5). Based on concepts of conversation analysis, we will focus on the role of markers as turn-taking organizing devices, including their function as transition or interruption graphic indicators (II, 6). We have considered four specific case studies (Oh, Et, Et bien, Hen) aiming at re-evaluating existing hypotheses about the function of orality markers (II, 7). Finally, our goal is to demonstrate that contrary to the presupposition of the vacuity implicit to their massive presence in medieval texts, swear words should be considered effective means of truth-telling (II, 8)

Full textTiO2, ZrO2, CeO2 and CeZrO2 supported noble metal catalysts (Pt, Pd, Ir, Ru and Rh) have been in a first time prepared to be used in the Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation of ammonia. The first results show that platinum is the most active metal. Palladium and iridium are the most selective toward nitrogen. Pt/TiO2 is the most interesting catalyst because it combines a very strong activity and a selectivity toward nitrogen close to iridium and palladium. An in-depth study on this catalyst (preparation method, nature of the metallic precursor…) shows that the single parameter which has a negative impact on the selectivity toward nitrogen is the basicity of the catalyst surface. The work realized on the operating conditions (PO2, catalyst weight, pH and ammonia concentration) in the presence of Pt/TiO2 shows the necessity to control the oxidizing function and particularly the nO2/nNH3 ratio. Indeed, if the value of this ratio is too high (nO2/nNH3 >> 0,75) then the selectivity toward nitrogen degrades strongly. To end, PtIr/TiO2 and PtPd/TiO2 bimetallic catalysts have been prepared to combine the activity of the platinum and the selectivity of palladium/iridium to nitrogen. These catalysts are not interesting because their behaviour is similar to the mechanical mixtures. Furthermore, the selectivity toward nitrogen is also degraded for nO2/nNH3 >> 0,75 with these catalysts

Full textThis study is part of the Autonotex project and aims to develop a connected and autonomous energy textile. The textile is intended for the manufacture of medical sheets monitoring patients and professional underwear. The main objective is to overcome the traditional batteries in smart textiles and develop a textile that will use the movements of the human body as a battery to power sensors placed strategically on clothing. To meet this challenge, the Autonotex project is focused in part on the development of new piezoelectric fibers. These materials generate a high electrical potential when subjected to mechanical stresses. In this new context, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer can be used to produce multi-filaments by melt spinning process. This polymer is known for its piezoelectric property linked its crystalline forms. The first issue of the PhD subject is to optimize this phase during the process of production of the filaments. Subsequently, two strategies were considered. In a first case, the 100% PVDF filaments are used for the production of textile fabrics which, once instrumented by electrodes, generate an electrical output voltage. A first prototype of a piezoelectric fabric coupled to electrodes by 3D-printing allows checking the feasibility of the plan. The second strategy was to develop a tri-component filament formed by the piezoelectric polymer and two layers of conducting polymer composites acting as external/internal electrodes

Full textCopper-Zinc-Tin chalcogenide (Cu2ZnSnS4, CZTS) materials have attracted increasing attention for solar cell absorber layers. In contrast to well-known solar absorber materials for thin films chalcogenide-based solar cells such as Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 and CdTe, CZTS is composed of abundant and non-toxic elements. Alternately, nanoparticles ink printing route process has been recently developed to address the issue of fabrication costs, replacing potentially more expensive vacuum based techniques. With the objective to develop low cost solar cells, we have designed a process route for the fabrication of solvent-redispersible, surfactant-free Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanoparticles with the objective to take benefit of a simple sulfide source (thiourea) which advantageously act as (i) a complexing agent inhibiting crystallite growth (ii) a surface additive providing redispersion in low ionic strength polar solvents (iii) a transient ligand easily replaced by an carbon-free surface additive. Highly concentrated (c > 100 g·l-1), stable, ethanolic CZTS dispersions were achieved after S2- surface exchange. CZTS nanoparticle films on Mo Glass substrate were fabricated using dip coating as a film forming process route. A procedure yielding crack-free films of 3 µm required for enhanced photovoltaic performances was defined involving a multi-step deposition. Sintering of these nanoparticle films under selenium partial pressure was carried out by conventional and rapid thermal processing sintering. A reasonable sintering of the films was achieved at 550 °C during 15 min with nearly complete conversion of the CZTS into CZTSe as shown by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The good electronic properties and low defect concentration of the sintered, crack-free CZTSe films resulting from these building blocks was shown by photoluminescence investigation, making these CZTS building blocks interesting for low-cost, high performance CZTSe solar cells. A solar cell (Mo/ CZTSe/CdS/ZnO) was fabricated

Full textDriven by the problematic of climate change, carbon dioxide emissions have to be drastically reduced within the next decades. Biodiesel uses vegetable oils and fats as raw-materials, which are upgraded in the transesterification process, whereby glycerol is formed as inevitable by-product of low value. Among the numerously proposed valorization possibilities of this component, the dehydration of glycerol to acrolein is economically one of the most interesting reactions. The reaction is known to be catalyzed by acid-catalysts such as zeolites, mixed metal-oxides and heteropoly acids. The latter offers the possibility for tuning their chemical properties by changing their composition. Therefore these Keggin-type heteropoly acids were chosen as active phase which was supported on meso-structured silica. The catalysts studied showed high catalytic performance but tend to deactivate rapidly which is ascribed to the deposition of carbon – a phenomenon widely observed for strong acid catalysts. Therefore the fine-tuning of the acid strength - by modification of the silica support with zirconia - was successfully demonstrated leading to (i) the increase of the long-term performance and (ii) the increase of the thermal stability of the active phase. In fact the, long-term performance of silicotungstic acid supported on zirconia-grafted SBA-15 was increased by a factor 3, compared to non-modified silica, yielding 69% acrolein after 24h on stream (against 24%)

Full textIn Vietnam, more than half a million people do not have access to electricity. They are mainly in mountainous regions or on islands. However, this country has great potential for renewable energy. In this context, these sources of energy can be regarded as promising solutions both economically and environmentally for supplying electrical power. Solar energy is the most suitable to supply villages with electricity because of the plentiful solar radiation and relatively easy maintenance of the structures. In energy conversion systems using renewable energy sources, simple static converters are generally used. Indeed, if we explore a photovoltaic system, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is done using a boost or buck-boost converter. Thus, in case of failure, the system is simply switched off. The aim of this thesis is to make improvements to an autonomous photovoltaic system that can be used in an isolated site. Therefore, an MPPT algorithm using three-level DC-DC converters is developed to extract the maximum power of a photovoltaic generator, whatever the climatic variations (temperature, sunlight) or charge. The system’s architecture is based on solar panels associated with a storage system, which required the development of a fuzzy supervisor to control the flow management. Finally, we propose a fault detection method to efficiently manage the failure of a multi-level converter element. Indeed, if there is a fault, we must go into a degraded mode to provide a service close to normal or at least minimal functioning, pending maintenance

Full textThe present works aim to the development of anticorrosion protection systems for magnesium alloys, by the way of sol-gel coatings. The first part of the study defines a targeted surface pretreatment for the Elektron21 magnesium alloy (Mg-Nd-Gd-Zr-Zn), consisting of a mechanical preparation, followed by a chemical step. The second part is related to the formation of cerium-based and phosphate-based chemical conversion layers, in order to reduce the substrate reactivity and to promote the post-deposition of other kind of coatings. A third part of the study regards to the protection of the Elektron21 alloy by two different formulations of hybrid coatings: "methacrylate" and "epoxy"-based, for whose the original composition was modified by addition of a corrosion inhibitor, Ce(NO3)3, or also by addition of organic "phosphonate" functional groups. In the prospect of the improvement of performances of the "epoxy-based" hybrid coating, a "bilayer" architecture system is proposed. Finally, the last part of these works discusses the study of a "duplex" protection system, consisting of both a phosphate-chemical conversion layer and the "epoxy-based" hybrid coating, on mono or bilayer configuration. Some surface and microstructural analyzes are correlated to the results obtained by electrochemical characterizations realized in corrosive environment for all the different anticorrosion protection systems here presented

Full textHydrothermal carbonization (HTC) allows pre-treating humid biomass in subcritical water (180-250°C) and at low pressures (10-40 bars) in the absence of air. This process produces a carbonaceous solid material called "hydro-char". The main aim of this work is to optimize the HTC process by studying the potential of hydro-char to produce energy. The studied biomass is a by-product of the olive oil industry called olive pomace containing water, residual oil, olive skin, olive pulp, and olive stones (with 70% moisture content). The moroccan olive pomace was first air-dried (DOP) and characterized. During the HTC process, the biomass is decomposed via dehydration and decarboxylation reactions. The obtained hydro-char has much less moisture and higher carbon contents than that of untreated DOP. Also, the hydro-char becomes poor in ashes by transferring them into the liquid phase. Hydro-chars have a higher HHV than that of peat and lignite. The results show that hydro-char mass yield and its properties depend on the process temperature especially. For a better analysis of the effect of operating conditions, a Design of Experiments Response Surface Methodology (DoE/RSM) approach was applied to optimize the HTC process. The DoE/RSM allows identifying a relationship between hydro-char properties and its mass yield and thermal combustion behavior. Response-surface plots show defined areas of production of hydro-char which allows tailoring hydro-char elaboration to a specific application. The process liquid from the HTC treatment of DOP shows a sensibility to operating conditions. The soluble carbon in the HTC liquid increases its polluting power and to decrease it two treatment process have been tested: evaporation and wet oxidation. Finally, the results show that the amount of water used for the hydrothermal treatment is the most influential factor on the energy balance of the HTC process

Full textInvestigations of the effect of the operating conditions on the dry coating and the motion of particles in a high shear mixer by the DEM simulation have been done. Big Suglets® and small Magnesium Stearate materials have been chosen for the dry coating process. The treatment has been carried out in a Cyclomix, a high shear mixer, at different mixing time, rotational speeds, filling ratio of the samples and particle size ratio to observe the effect of the operating conditions on the dry coating. A conversion ratio has been introduced to quantify the degree of coating and measured. The flowability has been improved when increasing the operation time in the mixer. Higher speeds of rotation can improve the flowability more rapidly. However, the flowability doesn’t seem to be sensitive to the filling ratio. The curves of conversion ratio versus time exhibit the same kind of variations for different operating conditions. It is possible to approximate this tendency by an exponential function in which a characteristic parameter “coating rate constant” is introduced, linked to the efficiency of the dry coating process, since the conversion ratio shows a linear relation with a flowability index and the wettability angle. Simulation of the particle motion in the mixer has been carried out by a Discrete Element Method: different parameters characterizing the location, the velocities, and the attachment of the particles have been derived. The velocity fields of the real and simulated particle motions, compared by Particle Image Velocity (PIV), are quite similar, validating the DEM method and allowing the prediction of the coating process

Full textTo study the voice in the silence of its expression reveals a new origin of language. Such a study replaces an examination of the sign as defined by philosophers and musicians during the classical period, and implies a modification of the language of the unconscious, considered until now as a sign by freud and as a signifier by lacan. The combined historical and psychoanalytical points of view identify the gesture in this construction, and put in question the psychoanalytical status of representation. The clinical study of the voice in autistic muteness leads us to reconsider the content of metapsychology. Through the bipolarity of the sound gesture and the soundless gesture, subnitted to the rhythm of encounter, and of primitive, submitted to the rhythm of encounter, and of primitive violence, a duo of passion is organized, wich in its paroxysm, extends to scream. This new language of the unconscious does not refer to representation but to voice. Thus voice finds itself located begoud the image, within the space of the vocal. Through this space, we are able to construct a vocal mirror, in wich the voice becomes an echo of desire, as a primitive, vocal writing of the psyche, and thus modifies the basis of the unconscious

Full textPopulation growth, coupled with a general increase in standard of living, result in a booming demand for raw material and energy. To face this challenge, an increased attention is paid to the use of renewable energies and natural resources. Among them, biomass is especially promising. Its advantages (abundance, distribution all over the Earth) are balanced by several drawbacks (low energy density, high moisture content,…). To overcome these problems, torrefaction is the most traditional way, but it has some inconveniences (increased ash content, loss of material). Hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) is a possible alternative. The purpose of this thesis is the study of HTC a means to beneficiate the lignocellulosic biomass. Three main aims were identified: increase of the energy density, recover molecules and minerals of interest. The study initially focused on HTC of molecular model systems present in wood. Beech wood was also studied, as a model biomass. This study allowed determining optimal experimental conditions for treatment of further biomasses. Finally, other activation methods have been tested, such as microwaves, and supercritical fluids. Hydrochars obtained after HTC feature a concomitant decrease of the atomic H/C and O/C ratios. Liquid phase contains different molecules of interest (furfural,…). Finally, ash content decreases after HTC owing to a partial leaching of some elements (alkali and alkaline earth metals). In conclusion, HTC seems to be an interesting alternative to torrefaction as it allows for the production of hydrochars suitable for gasification, and the recovery of molecules and minerals of interest. The interest and technical feasibility have been demonstrated in particular for biomasses with high moisture (agricultural crops) or with high pollutant contents (grounds of waste disposal)

Aussi, les scores perceptifs prédits à partir des paramètres de contrôle du synthétiseur et les scores attribués par des experts sont fortement corrélés.

Full textOur research is a contribution to studies on secondary acoustic cues in Mandarin tone identification, by comparing acoustic data collected in modal speech and in whispered speech. According to the literature on the same issue, theses cues could be found in acoustic dimensions other than in the fundamental frequency, as a set of attributes. We have analyzed these attributes in the temporal domain, at the intensity level and in the spectrum, as well as their relations with tones. Our results show that some temporal parameters and the fourth resonance in the spectrum are very closely related to tones. These relations are dependent on the intrinsic characteristics of the vowel that carries the tone (which is equivalent to the rime in our research)

Full textThis work aims to propose an overall reflexion in particular relating to the role of the mother in winnicott and lacan. Thus we develop the concept of empathy. Our process follows three axes. The first consists of probing the origin of the mother-child relationship from a genetic and physiological point of view, and this, well before birth the framework of the primary mother-child education bond. We are thus led to lay the basis of a vast articulation of comprehension with others. This enables us to develop the concept of empathy harmony. Which leads us to probe the contributions of the anglo-saxon school represented in particular by m. Klein, o. Kernberg, and h. Searles from the point of view of the object-relationship. Thus, we pass from the roles of a genetic nature to those which refer to the identification as a differentiation. This finally leads us to approach the bases of the word as bases of the symbolic system, and to proceed. Through a study of the work of dante, to an analysis of the particular statute of the voice of the mother, creation, or the voice of god. This, in reference to my certificate

Full textHere is developed a description of the primary sound-environment of man based upon applications and treatise that conceive the transmittal of a sound and more particularly the voice - even before birth - both as a psychophysical contribution and a symbolical gift. Examining some mythical texts belonging to different cosmogonies will enable to spot through the figurative representation of a primordial voice or a creative speech the basic themes and the process recalling the founder aspect of speech for man. The phantasm underlying the original narratives also determine the expressive construc- tions of the individual who sublimes through creation the loss of an imaginary voice. A morphological description of the "making up" of the voice from the early vocal impulses of the baby to the predicative activity at its beginning will endeavour to understand how the voice turns into speech. This passage is interpreted in connection to a psycho-analytical conceptualisation focussing on the notion of "picture of the body" and more particularly on the "mirror stage". The symbolizing process has been studied with this outlook in mind and the incidence of the double-sided character of spoken voice (semiotical substratum and support of the verbal symbol) are being viewed through the study of the "poetic art" of some writers

Full textDifferences between female and male voices are linked to complex and multidisciplinary issues. The current study focuses on phonetic and psycholinguistic aspects. The first chapter is a literature review of the field. The second chapter presents an acoustic analysis of dissyllabic words produced by Northeastern American English speakers and Parisian French speakers. Resonant frequencies, mean F0, F0 range, VOT, H1-H2 intensity differences and words’ durations were measured. Significant cross-gender differences were obtained for each tested parameter. Moreover, cross-language variations were observed. The same recordings were then used in gender identification from speech experiment. It was conducted jointly on Parisian French native listeners with French stimuli, and on American English listeners with English stimuli. Listeners had to identify the speaker’s gender and indicate their degree of certainty. Considering the acoustic analysis performed on the stimuli, it was found that American English and French listeners did not use the same strategies. The fourth and last chapter is dedicated to a word spotting experiment, conducted with French native speakers. Results suggest that these two types of voice are processed equally fast. To conclude, it appears that cross-gender acoustic differences and listeners' strategies in gender identification from voice are strongly language dependent and therefore socially constructed. Research perspectives and practical applications are proposed

Full textAs a consequence of a reflection on the nature of the voice in vocal works after 1945, the aim of this work is to expose, through the study of works by composers of the same avant-garde school, various, broadened vocal practises. The issue is considered from two different angles : - the voice as raw material, within the framework of two traditional categorie : monody and polyphony, - the voice in its relationship to language, a subject about wich several theoretical attitudes ha e been so far defended. This dichotomy which has traditionally been respected (oice as music vs. Voice as language), and which has been adopted in the divisions of this work, has re ealed its own gaps and breaking points. Thus, we shall find in voice - not reduced to song (whose main role is to sustain a sound) but apprehended as a whole, embracing speech, language, music and noise together - that which consistantly makes it heterogeneous in itself, as in a continuous variation

We will examin the way in which the verbal morphems -endings and suffixes -*to- and -*ndo- - are significant of the semantic connectio (or diathesis) which is established between verbs and substantive nouns

Full textThis study considers the narrative and poetic works of the Spanish writer Manuel Rivas. Through a literary and psycho-analytical approach, it underlines the author’s concern for the Inner Self. He endeavors to penetrate its secrets written in him as on a palimpsest. The writer carries out that introspection in Galicia, the land where he was born in 1957, and which, in his writings, becomes a “global village” –an archetype of the world giving in to globalization and of a cosmos made of multiple intertwined strata-. In that singular context aiming at Universality, individuals open themselves up in the midst of their everyday life, they lavishly express themselves in words that the writer uses to build up a poetics of the oral language and weave an aesthetics of meanings and sensations. These words telling anxiety, desires, dreams and nightmares eventually shape out a geographical survey of the human soul, taking its roots in childhood and stressing the importance of Father and Mother imagos which have been revealed through the image of the double, the water and earth motifs, or that of emigration

Full textA tragic but largely unknown episode for the Western public--and highly distorted on the Soviet side--the siege initiated by the Germans and their allies that Leningrad underwent for almost 900 days is a privileged observation field for studying the reaction of individuals to a context of extreme violence and pressure (the war, the blockade, Stalinism). The many personal diaries kept by the besieged --an extremely rich but still underexploited source--allow one to penetrate into their mental universe and thereby offer an invaluable insight not only on the history of the siege of Leningrad but more generally on the intimate experience of the Stalinist era in times of war. On one hand they let one see the role of diaries in infrahuman conditions (survival writing and testimonial aspect) and bring to light a singular way of narrating this experience (mass death, starvation, disorientation), joining as such the realm of disaster literature. On the other hand, they show the complex way Soviets react to a propaganda-filled ideological environment. The articulation of the three pillars of the Soviet ideology (collectivism, internationalism, heroism) by the diarists reveals a permanent tension between intimate and official discourses. It manifests itself by a wide spectrum of different stands, from total discredit to the internalizing the voice of the power. As such, the personal diaries allow us to refine our comprehension of the intimate experience of Stalinism, whose study often remains restricted to the 1930s

Full textStarting from the double meaning of the latin word uates, this study aims to define the links between poetry and prophecy in Lucan’s Pharsalia. Since Antiquity indeed, the prophet has been both a soothsayer and a person speaking for somebody else, especially for a god. First, we build a typology of the prophetic figures in the Pharsalia and we compare them with literary characters from epic and tragedy. Lucan conjures three kinds of prophets : omniscient ones, prophets who use divinatory technics (e.g. astrology, haruspicy, enthusiasm) and those whose inspiration comes from the Underworld. We then look at the prophetic speeches delivered by the characters against the oracular voice of the epic narrator. We study narrative prolepses of the epic that anticipate Roman history (especially the history of the Civil Wars), and through which Lucan offers a cyclical vision of history. After defining the prophetic matter of the narrative voice, we analyse Lucan’s prophetic manner from a narratological and a stylistic perspective. Lastly, we switch from a poetic definition of prophetic voices in the Pharsalia to a metapoetic study. The prophet characters indeed serve as surrogates of the poet and literally utter his voice, thus referring to the etymology of the word. The role of Lucan’s prophets is therefore to formulate an Ars poetica, in accordance with the poet’s Weltanschauung – a vision articulated by an aesthetics of disruption which encapsulates the celestial macrocosm, the organic microcosm and the epic hexameter

Full textThis study focuses mainly on the work of the African-American woman writer Toni Morrison. Its aim is to show how Morisson's writing of black bodies and of the African-American heritage, as well as her creation of a unique tragic voice, make hers a forbidden voice, a literary voice of memory (or rememory) and pain, struggling to be heard against the forces of suppression and oblivion. To each of these three themes-the body, the Afro-American heritage, the tragic voice a chapter of this study is devoted. The literary commentary of long extracts from the novels is the main feature of this dissertation, my hope being that such literary analyses may more specifically highlight the subtlety of Toni Morrison's work on language. Throughout these three chapters, other authors (African-American or not)are also the object of textual analysis, either because their voices enter in a call-response pattern with Morrison’s or, on the contrary, because they are emblematic of what Morrison writes against, of what she revises. In singling out writers who have chosen very similar themes, my point is to underline the marked differences in literary or ideological treatment that appear when their work is read in parallel with Morrison’s texts. The last chapter asks the question: "is there such a thing as a black voice?" in order not to avoid the question of the ethnicity of black literature. Without reducing black literature to the linguistic or sociological features it comprises, this chapter attempts to chart the already rich literary tradition that the black voice has behind it, a tradition which, thanks to the writers studied here, arches likes a rainbow from the fertile past into a glorious future
