Full textMotivated by the ubiquity of optimization in many areas of science and engineering, particularly in data science, this thesis exploits the close link between continuous-time dissipative dynamical systems and optimization algorithms to provide a systematic analysis of the global and local behavior of several first- and second-order systems, focusing on convex, stochastic, and infinite-dimensional settings on the one hand, and non-convex, deterministic, and finite-dimensional settings on the other hand. For stochastic convex minimization problems in infinite-dimensional separable real Hilbert spaces, our key proposal is to analyze them through the lens of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and inclusions (SDIs), as well as their inertial variants. We first consider smooth differentiable convex problems and first-order SDEs, demonstrating almost sure weak convergence towards minimizers under integrability of the noise and providing a comprehensive global and local complexity analysis. We also study composite non-smooth convex problems using first-order SDIs, and show under integrability conditions on the noise, almost sure weak convergence of the trajectory towards a minimizer, with Tikhonov regularization almost sure strong convergence of trajectory to the minimal norm solution. We then turn to developing a unified mathematical framework for analyzing second-order stochastic inertial dynamics via time scaling and averaging of stochastic first-order dynamics, achieving almost sure weak convergence of trajectories towards minimizers and fast convergence of values and gradients. These results are extended to more general second-order SDEs with viscous and Hessian-driven damping, utilizing a dedicated Lyapunov analysis to prove convergence and establish new convergence rates. Finally, we study deterministic non-convex optimization problems and propose several inertial algorithms to solve them derived from second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) combining both non-vanishing viscous damping and geometric Hessian-driven damping in explicit and implicit forms. We first prove convergence of the continuous-time trajectories of the ODEs to a critical point under the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz (KL) property with explicit rates, and generically to a local minimum under a Morse condition. Moreover, we propose algorithmic schemes by appropriate discretization of these ODEs and show that all previous properties of the continuous-time trajectories still hold in the discrete setting under a proper choice of the stepsize

Full textThis thesis + portuguese trajectory ;, is the result of a long research in documentary film-making through photography, film and video, of the immigrant portuguese population in the region of paris, during the period of 1984-1998. About 100 individuals were interviewed. The images record their experiences, from 1960-1970, to find lodging and employment and - in the 30 years that followed - portray their efforts to participate in the economic and cultural, artistic and scientific life in the country which accepted them - while at the same time they tried to maintain their unique personalities and cultural heritage, as well as participate in the economic life and development of their country of origin. Between 1984 and 1997, a large amount of footage was made that was based on interviews, reports and varieties of other documented materials. At the same time, an analysis was continually made during this research in order to develop an approach and understanding of these people who balanced their lives between the country of their origin and france. This is, in fact, a mixed thesis which aims to establish a relationship between film and text. The purpose of the film is to establish a record of image and sound for the future. Considering all the new ways we have to communicate, the camera certainly permits us to film reality - and isn't the documentary film the best mean of expression ? note - in this thesis of 605 pages, 308 are devoted to the description of the daily life of this people. The balance of the study is a more detailed discussion of the film-making techniques

Thesis, Paris 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA01H126/document.
Full textTourist place since the 19th century, the forest of Fontainebleau knows a paradoxical situation since the 1960's. The estimation of his attendance is increasing, passer-by from 9 million in 1969 to 17 million in 1999. At the same time, the set of the tourist services disappears in the forest. Around the forest, the territory knows a decrease of the number of tourist beds. Exurbanisation pulled a residential transition where an important part of second homes became main homes. This process brings us to reflect about the evolution of the practices and the representations of the place. The objective of this thesis is to study the trajectory of the place by questioning its tourist inheritance. Our research leans on an ethnographical survey c the recreational practices in the forest of Fontainebleau and the associative tissue in the territory of Fontainebleau. Also, we study a documentary corpus mobilizing archives, artistic works and tourist literature. The forest of Fontainebleau constitutes a laboratory to question the notion of tourism with regard to the modem perception of the wilderness area. It also allows to wonder about the power of places builds by the tourism in inhabitants' anchoring of the territory and the conflicts which it can engender

Full textThis thesis is approached through the prism of my own practice of sculpture. My sculpture is positioned through soft materials in a perspective of proven experience in undergoing the same constraints as my own body, which also seeks balance and position. Under the auspices of the dialectic of lightness and heaviness, I reinvested in my theoretical discourse gestures and directions as the center of my own artistic work through terms and concepts that are familiar to me. These concepts are experienced through a selected history of the sculpture of the twentieth century. I perceive a community of attitude, gestures and choices to form the aim of its presence in space and time. In the first part, the problem of the mind-body dichotomy is approached through a path between the sculpture, the look and the speech carried on it. On the second part, I address the issue of presence against that of representation by analyzing the question of repetition as well as the work that reflects the choice to let go or let the proper behavior of the material be. These actions which involve a dispossession sometimes tend to describe what it is to hold on and to resist. This paradox opens the third part in which the process of implementing and updating the presentation of the work is questioned. Finally, in order to identify the conditions of the phenomenological experience specific to the sculpture, the work of this thesis concludes with the study of the concept of presence in the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty. This thesis conceives the creation of the sculpture and its perception as a bundle of "trajectories of gravities" [Krauss, 1994]

Full textWe propose a strategy to curve the trajectory of the central lobe of a zero order Bessel beam Jo(αr) along its propagation axis. The proposed method involves modifying the phase of the beam incident on an adaptive mirror. We show that the central lobe of the beam can be propagated along parabolic and cubic trajectories while preserving its symmetry. Theoretical simulations were reproduced in laboratory using an adaptive liquid mirror. The parabolic trajectory of the 60-micron central spot of a Jo(αr) beam exhibits a 0.6-mm off axis shift after 30-cm propagation. The versatility of the adaptive liquid mirror allows producing other beam shapes and trajectories. For example, it is possible to split the central lobe of a Bessel beam in two (Y shape); it is also possible to modify the diameter of a tunnel beam during the propagation a higher-order J₁(αr) Bessel beam. Comparison with Airy beams and potential applications in guided-wave optics will be discussed.

Full textThe work presented in this manuscript is based on the study of a phenomenon called phonetic convergence which postulates that two people in interaction will tend to adapt how they talk to their partner in a communicative purpose. We have developed a paradigm called “Verbal Dominoes“ to collect a large corpus to characterize this phenomenon, the ultimate goal being to fill a conversational agent of this adaptability in order to improve the quality of human-machine interactions. We have done several studies to investigate the phenomenon between pairs of unknown people, good friends, and between people coming from the same family. We expect that the amplitude of convergence is proportional to the social distance between the two speakers. We found this result. Then, we have studied the knowledge of the linguistic target impact on adaptation. To characterize the phonetic convergence, we have developed two methods: the first one is based on a linear discriminant analysis between the MFCC coefficients of each speaker and the second one used speech recognition techniques. The last method will allow us to study the phenomenon in less controlled conditions. Finally, we characterized the phonetic convergence with a subjective measurement using a new perceptual test called speaker switching. The test was performed using signals coming from real interactions but also with synthetic data obtained with the harmonic plus

Full textThe main work in this thesis deals with the problem of trajectory planning for autonomous airships. In the first part, we exposed a mathematical model governing the motion of the airships. The second part is devoted to characterization of admissible trajectories. The choice is made on the trim trajectories, which occupy a particular place in aviation applications. We proposed an algorithm that allows the calculation of the trim minimizing energy, suitable for long duration missions. The third part consists in formulating the problem of planning in a Hybrid Automata form named Motion automata. Its nodes are represented by trim trajectories, while its edges correspond to transitions maneuvres between trim’s. Analysing controllability of motion automaton is possible by exploiting the properties of trim trajectories. In this context, nominal trajectory is given by concatenating a finite number of primitives

Full textThe three synoptic recensions of peter's confession are based on a primitive apocalyptic-coloured account, which ends with the choice-saying presently reported in mt 16,18. It expresses a paschal faith tinged with the radicalism of a christian community close to its semitic origins and living in the expectation of the living god's son's advent, seeing peter as the tangible token of the reality of their hope. This primitive account probably retains the remembrance of peter's attitude during the galilean crisis of jesus' ministry. Its most reliable historical base lies nevertheless in the mention of kepha, the nickname given to the disciple. The choice-saying offers a new reading of it, focusing the aspects of solidity and stability usually linked to the term. Yet under the shock of peter's martyrdom, mark replaces the choice-saying by a gathering of jesus'words on the followership, preceded by the first annoucement of the passion. It is not certain that luke ignored the choice-saying. But a reading of the entire lukan corpus allows to see that peter is less the foundation-rock than the actor assuring the steady growth of god's people beyond the calls for conversion of the passion and the overture to the pagans. Matthew knew the primitive account and the markan recension of the confession's narrative. He widened the jesus' declaration with the mt 16,17 beatitude and the mt 16,19 saying of induction, thus creating an indoubted echo with mt 28, 18-20. The powers nowadays wielded in the ecclesiastic brotherhood in the name of the risen lord are then deeply rooted in the jesus'earthly ministry, through the relay of generations

Full textThis study follows the trajectory of the category of “intercultural relations”, both an academic and a public policy category. It analyses, in the French context, its first formulations in the beginnings of the 1960’s, its various forms of institutionalization along the 1980’s and describes its progressive invisibilization until the 2000’s. This study investigates the way different actors use this category in a scientific, administrative or political way in order to consider the presence of immigrants in the French society. The mobilization of this category led these sociologists, educationalists and civil servants to rethink the immigration phenomenon. Instead of looking at the dynamics of social classes or with an assimilationist view, they put the cultural dimension of immigrant workers’ presence in France at the heart of the analysis. At the centre of this study lies the analysis of the emergence of this scientific category coined via critical knowledge and used as a reforming public policy category which targets representations of a so-called “racist French public opinion”. The investigation is carried out at the crossroads of socio-historical analysis of a category and the study of the construction of policy problems. It is based on (partly unreleased) archives of public organizations, depending from the Ministry of social affairs, in charge of implementing insertion policies and promoting intercultural relations. This study also relies on the grey literature produced both by the main promoters of this cause, and various State agencies as well as interviews with both kinds of actors. These empirical data are examined through two approaches: first the analysis of the relations between knowledge and public policy; and second, the relations between organisations and public policy. The thesis shows that the idealistic dimension of this category promoting a harmonious management of intercultural relations has not been present very long in the government’’ agenda. However, this category has been used as a long-lasting regulation device for the interactions between street-level civil servants and immigrants constituents. It also shows that the institutionalization of this knowledge in an organization at the margin of the State and the strategies developed to fight a “racist public opinion” contributed to forge and feed a depoliticized antiracism. Investigating on a barely visible category, the thesis aims at giving an account of the process of the redefinition of the boundary between State and society which is at the heart of the pedagogical role of the State

Full textThe French ecosystem of audiovisual production has been structured by the liberalization of state television (1984-1986). Radio frequencies were granted to broadcasters in exchange for a commitment to invest a percentage of their turnover into French production. The result is a heavily regulated system whose rules have changed very little in thirty years. This industrial organization is showing its limits: the market share of French films in theaters is stagnant, while the audience is aging. The profitability of TV-channels crumbles and series they finance don't sell. The entry of foreign platforms such as Netflix fragments the audience even more. The purpose of this thesis is to study the creation of the industrial ecosystem of the French Television, its evolution and the impact of the entry of international players on the incumbents' strategies and on regulation

In a model of two open economies with intertemporal optimization, we characterize optimal paths toward convergence and show that the richer country achieves higher utility than it would in autarchy, while the poorer country's convergence toward the steady state is speeded up. However, the short-term effects of free trade and free capital flows on the richer economy are negative in terms of wages and consumption. The richer country will maintain its assets in the poor country indefinitely.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to link two phenomena concerning the asymptotical behavior of stochastic processes, which were disjoined up to now. The abrupt convergence or cutoff phenomenon on one hand, and metastability on the other hand. In the cutoff case an abrupt convergence towards the equilibrium measure occurs at a time which can be determined, whereas metastability is linked to a great uncertainty of the time at which we leave some equilibrium. We propose a common framework to compare and study both phenomena : that of discrete time birth and death chains on N with drift towards zero. Under the drift hypothesis, we prove that there is an abrupt convergence towards zero, metastability in the other direction, and that the last exit in the metastability is the time reverse of a typical cutoff path. We extend our approach to the Ehrenfest model, which allows us to prove abrupt convergence and metastability with a weaker drift hypothesis

On étend notre approche au modèle d'Ehrenfest, ce qui nous permet de montrer la convergence abrupte et la métastabilité sous une hypothèse de dérive plus faible.
