Abstract:
Neuroimaging is an integral part of clinical assessment, management, and research involving concussion. Typically, in sports concussion, conventional neuroimaging studies are unrevealing, likely reflecting the rapid homeostatic return of baseline neural functioning in most concussions. However, a number of advanced neuroimaging methods hold great promise in furthering the study and identification of subtle neuropathological changes associated with concussion, which are reviewed here.

Abstract:
This article presents theoretical simulations of scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) images and spectra of nanostructures. It begins with an overview of the theories of STM and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS), focusing on four main approaches: the perturbation or Bardeen approach, the Tersoff–Hamann approach and its extension, the scattering theory or Landauer–Bütticker approach, and the non-equilibrium Green's function or Keldysh approach. It then considers conventional STM and STS experimental investigations of various systems including clean surfaces, ad-atoms, single molecules, self-assembled monolayers, and nanostructures. It also discusses STM activities that go beyond conventional STM images and STS, such as functionalized STM tip, inelastic spectroscopy identification, manipulation, molecular electronics and molecular machines.

Full text
Abstract:
Information extraction (IE) is the automatic identification of selected types of entities, relations, or events in free text. This article appraises two specific strands of IE — name identification and classification, and event extraction. Conventional treatment of languages pays little attention to proper names, addresses etc. Presentations of language analysis generally look up words in a dictionary and identify them as nouns etc. The incessant presence of names in a text, makes linguistic analysis of the same difficult, in the absence of the names being identified by their types and as linguistic units. Name tagging involves creating, several finite-state patterns, each corresponding to some noun subset. Elements of the patterns would match specific/classes of tokens with particular features. Event extraction typically works by creating a series of regular expressions, customized to capture the relevant events. Enhancement of each expression is corresponded by a relevant, suitable enhancement in the event patterns.

Abstract:
This chapter provides the reader with an introduction to the book’s fundamentals. It begins with a challenge to the conventional view that public inquiries are ineffective, which stresses that inquiry scholarship has simply not been rigorous enough to justify that position. The book’s response to that lack of rigour, in the form of its research design and theoretical framework, is then set out and justified. Thereafter three outputs are summarized as the book’s main contributions. First, an updated conceptual account of what the public inquiry is in relation to contemporary public policy and governance. Second, a central argument that inquiries produce certain types of policy learning that reduce our vulnerability to future crises. Finally, the identification of a series of factors that influence inquiry success and failure.

Head, Matthew. Fantasia and Sensibility. Edited by Danuta Mirka. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199841578.013.001.

Full text
Abstract:
Fantasia and sensibility are not like other topics. Composed and improvised in all shapes and sizes, fantasias are not reducible to a single type of material. The fantasia was a host genre, a context of topical play, incorporating a range of stylistic and generic references. The frequent use of passages inspired by accompanied recitative and aria reveals an affinity with opera seria. The idea that the fantasia influences other genres is prominent in music criticism only after 1800 and represents an idealist trope foreign to much of the eighteenth century. Sensibility, though thematized in scenes of musical pathos and tenderness which display stylistic commonalities through a range of conventional materials, was not a musical style but a capacity for refined emotional response and sympathetic identification broadly relevant to the project of aesthetics and the fine arts.

Moulton, Calum D. Novel pharmacological targets. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198789284.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a bidirectional relationship between depression and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Patients with comorbid depression and T2D are at high risk of complications and premature mortality. Conventional treatments for depression do not consistently improve diabetes outcomes, despite improving depressive symptoms. Shared mechanisms may underpin both depression and T2D, providing novel pharmacological targets to treat both conditions simultaneously. There are several candidate pathways. For inflammation and vitamin D deficiency, there is good cross-sectional evidence to support an association with depression in T2D. Prospective epidemiological studies are needed to test biological pathways as predictive biomarkers of depression and T2D. Intervention studies are needed to test the modifiability of these pathways. Repurposing of established diabetes treatments may provide a ‘multiple hit’ strategy. The identification and modification of novel biological targets has the potential to treat both depression and T2D, as well as reducing longer term morbidity and mortality.

Full text
Abstract:
Dogmatic or closed-minded cognition is directionally biased; a tendency to select, interpret, and elaborate upon information in a manner that reinforces the individual’s prior opinion or expectation. Open-minded cognition is directionally unbiased; a tendency to process information in a manner that is not biased in the direction of the individual’s prior opinion or expectation. It is marked by a tendency to consider a variety of intellectual perspectives, values, attitudes, opinions, or beliefs—even those that contradict the individual’s prior opinion. Open-Minded Cognition is assessed using measures that specifically focus on the degree to which individuals process information in a directionally biased manner. Open-Minded Cognition can function as an individual difference characteristic that predicts a variety of social attitudes and political opinions. These include attitudes toward marginalized social groups (e.g., racial and ethnic minorities), support for democratic values, political ideology, and partisan identification. Open-Minded Cognition also possesses a malleable component that varies across domains and specific situations. For example, Open-Minded Cognition is higher in the political domain than religious domain. In addition, Open-Minded Cognition is prevalent in situations where individuals encounter plausible arguments that are compatible with conventional values, but is less evident when individuals encounter arguments that are extremely implausible or that contradict conventional values. Within a situation, Open-Minded Cognition also varies across social roles involving expertise. Because political novices possess limited political knowledge, social norms dictate that they should listen and learn in an open-minded fashion. In contrast, because political experts possess extensive knowledge, social norms dictate that they are entitled to adopt a more dogmatic cognitive orientation when listening to a political communication.

Abstract:
Human myiases can be caused by over 50 species of dipteran larvae. The numbers of human clinical myiasis reports, reflect their relative importance in the following order; cutaneous, ophthalmomyiases, nasal, oral, intestinal, ear, urogenital, and cerebral myiases. Myiasis producing flies are distributed worldwide, but most reported cases are from warm and developing countries. Molecular techniques have been applied to myiasis fly identification and classification, especially ostrids and calliphorines. Successful elimination programs have been carried out against Hypoderma spp. in the UK and Cochliomyia hominivorax in the USA, Mexico, Central America, Libya and the Caribbean Islands and another is ongoing against Crysomya bezziana in the Middle East. A beneficial myissis “Biosurgery or maggot therapy” is the intentional use of Lucilia sericata larvae applied in specially designed dressings to chronic and MRSA infected wounds. The growing larvae execration/secretion facilitate wound debridement and successfully treated leg and pressure ulcers, wounds associated with diabetes, and many other types of infected wounds in a shorter time compared to conventional treatment. Now knowledge of myiases producing flies is accepted in many countries as a forensic tool.

Adhikari, Mohamed. Burdened by race: Coloured identities in southern Africa. UCT Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.15641/1-92051-660-4.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its emergence in the late 19th century, coloured identity has been pivotal to racial thinking in southern African societies. The nature of colouredness has always been a highly emotive and controversial issue because it embodies many of the racial antagonisms, ambiguities, and derogations prevalent in the subcontinent. Throughout their existence coloured communities have had to contend with the predicament of being marginal minorities stigmatised as the insalubrious by-products of miscegenation. This book showcases recent innovative research and writing on coloured identity in southern Africa. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines and applying fresh theoretical insights, Burdened by Race brings new levels of understanding to processes of coloured self-identification. This collection breaks virgin ground by examining diverse manifestations of colouredness across the region using interlinking themes and case studies from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi to present analyses that both challenge and overturn much of the conventional wisdom around the identity in the current literature. Mohamed Adhikari teaches in the Historical Studies Department at the University of Cape Town and has published widely on coloured identity in South Africa. His books include ‘Let Us Live for Our Children’: The Teachers’ League of South Africa, 1913–1940 and Not White Enough, Not Black Enough: Racial Identity in South Africa’s Coloured Community.

Joslyn, Mark R. The Gun Gap. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190064822.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
To understand public opinion and political behavior, researchers typically sort people by self-identified groupings such as party identification, race, gender, education, and income. This book advances gun owners as a new classification. It demonstrates a “gun gap,” which captures the differences between gun owners and nonowners, and shows how this gap improves conventional models of political behavior. The gun gap in fact represents an important explanation for voter choice, voter turnout, perceptions of personal and public safety, preferences for gun control policies, and support for the death penalty. Moreover, the gun gap is growing. During the 1970s and 1980s, it was small. However, legislative battles over guns in the early 1990s marked a significant growth in the gun gap that continues to this day. The 2016 presidential election witnessed the largest recorded gun gap in history. The gun gap in voter choice was nearly three times larger in 2016 than the gender gap, and it exceeded age and education gaps by notable margins. This book also focuses on variation among gun owners. Gun owners are not a monolith but exhibit attitudinal and behavioral differences that can be as large as the gap between gun owners and nonowners. The gun gap thus affords a new and compelling vantage point to evaluate modern mass politics.

Abstract:
How do we read after the so-called death of literature? If we are to attend to the proclamations that the representational apparatuses of literature and politics are dead, what aesthetic, ethical, and political possibilities remain for us today? This book brings together works of continental philosophy and critical theory (Emmanuel Levinas, Paul de Man, Jacques Derrida, Jacques Rancière) and works of art from Argentina (J. L. Borges, Juán José Saer, Ricardo Piglia, César Aira, Albertina Carri, the Internacional Errorista) in order to practice what Graff Zivin calls anarchaeological reading: reading for the blind spots, errors, points of opacity or untranslatability in works of philosophy and art. Rather than “applying” concepts from the former in order to understand or elucidate the latter, the book aim to expose works of philosophy, literary theory, narrative, poetry, film, and performance art/activism to one another. The work of aesthetic or political expression, then, does not appear as an object of study in the conventional sense, but rather as a possible source of philosophical and political thought itself. Ethical and political concepts such as identification and recognition, decision and event, sovereignty and will, are read as constitutively impossible, erroneous, through these acts of interdisciplinary and interdiscursive exposure.

Horne, Paul, and Jessica Page. Integrated Pest Management for Crops and Pastures. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643095625.

Full text
Abstract:
Integrated Pest Management for Crops and Pastures describes in straightforward language what is required for farmers to successfully implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in cropping and grazing operations. It explains the differences between conventional pesticide-based controls and IPM, and demonstrates the advantages of IPM. Effective control of pests depends on a number of approaches, not just chemical or genetic engineering. The opening chapters cover the different approaches to pest management, and the importance of identification and monitoring of pests and beneficials. Most farmers and advisors can identify major pests but would struggle to recognise a range of beneficial species. Without this information it is impossible to make appropriate decisions on which control methods to use, especially where pests are resistant to insecticides. The book goes on to deal with the control methods: biological, cultural and chemical. The biological control agents discussed include both native and introduced species that attack pests. Cultural changes that have led to an increase in the incidence or severity of pest attack are also examined. The chapter on chemical control describes the different ways chemicals can affect beneficial species, also detailing acute, sub-lethal and transient toxicities of pesticides, drawing on examples from horticulture where necessary. Finally, the authors bring all the components of integrated pest management together and show farmers how to put their IPM plan into action.

Abstract:
This book presents a synthesis on the necessary methods and techniques for the correct excavation, recovery and conservation of human remains, as well as notions of sampling and analysis of bones, useful for an adequate study of funeral contexts in conventional (bio)archaeological research or forensic-anthropology. As this book was written primarily for archeology students and archeologists with little training in bone handling, the language is easy-to-follow. The book is divided into two sections that roughly correspond to the two phases in which the method of analysis of human bones can be divided. In the first section, we describe the Phase I or field work that includes recovery methods, from the prospection and identification of burial sites, excavation and recording, field-sampling techniques, to the packaging and transport of bones to the laboratory. In the second part of the book, Phase II or laboratory work, we describe the treatment that should be given to bones from their arrival to laboratory of analysis to the final storage. In this section, we show the methods of cleaning and preparation of bones for further analysis, some basic notions on restoration and conservation, and relevant information about sampling techniques and their scientific principles to obtain information from the examined individual. Along the text we emphasize the informative potential of each analysis from the bioarchaeological and anthropological-forensic viewpoint.

Abstract:
The second edition of this new authority on project financing continues to provide guidance on the legal and practical issues relevant to international projects. As well as addressing the basic principles which affect the structuring and documentation of project financings, the book also explains structural, legal, and contractual differences between the various sectors such as transportation, telecommunication, infrastructure, public/private partnerships; conventional, renewable, and nuclear power; mining, and oil and gas. It considers the application of English and New York law in cross-border documentation and legal and practical matters associated with running financing projects in civil law jurisdictions. Different sources of funding are also examined. These include the legal and documentation issues arising from the use of such financing techniques and how they interact with each other. Equally significant, the book provides analysis of project defaults and work-outs giving guidance on how to manage projects when these circumstances arise. It also contains extensive coverage of dispute resolution in international projects. Project finance is used worldwide to structure and finance natural resource and infrastructure projects. This book provides detailed guidance on practical issues such as the identification and assessment of project risk with relevant documentation such as risk matrices and checklists covering both key project contracts and the major terms of a project financing aimed at providing practical guidance to practitioners on the structuring of projects.
