Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Active microrheology uses external forces (most typically magnetic or optical) to force microrheological probes into motion. These techniques short-circuit the Einstein component of passive microrheology. Active microrheology provides an additional handle to probe material properties, and has been used both to extend the range of materials amenable to microrheological analysis, and to examine material properties that are inaccessible to passive microrheology. Three main topics are presented: the use of active microrheology to extend the range of passive microrheology, while maintaining many of the advantages (small sample size, wide frequency range, etc.); its use to complement passive microrheology in active systems, which convert chemical fuel to mechanical work, in order to elucidate the power provided by molecular motors, for instance; and its application (and potential limitations) to investigate the non-linear response properties of materials, including shear thinning and yielding.

Haan, Estelle. ‘Latinizing’ Milton. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198754824.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter traces the trajectory and implied audiences of a cluster of Latin translations of Paradise Lost that emerged in the long eighteenth century. These, by a certain J.C. (1686), Hog (1690), Power (1691), Trapp (1740), and Dobson (1753), are discussed in relation to theoretical and pedagogical precepts about translation, the important tradition of neo-Latin poetry, and the perennial debate about la questione della lingua. Informed by current translational theory, the analysis considers the multifunctional aims and consequences of Latinizing Milton, whereby the translator, employing a reverse translational methodology, must convert the language of the present into that of the past. It also examines the elaboration of a vernacular original via Latin exegesis and paraphrase, and assesses ways in which, in the more accomplished renderings, Latinitas enabled the invocation of classical intertexts, which in themselves offer a nuanced reading of Milton’s epic.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This annual publication contains summaries of the Mycenaean Seminar convened by the Institute of Classical Studies. The seminar series has been running since the 1950s, when it focused largely on the exciting new research enabled by the decipherment of Linear B. The series has now evolved to cover Aegean Prehistory in general, and is well known among subject specialists throughout the world. Taken together, the summaries provide a rich resource for Aegean Prehistory, and often provide the only citable instance of new research projects, until their fuller publication becomes possible. The summaries of the seminars have been published as part of BICS since 1963. Starting with the 2015–16 series, the Mycenaean summaries will be published separately online, retaining their original character and their close connection with BICS, and becoming far more widely available as Open Access publications via the Humanities Digital Library.

Full text
Abstract:
With “Phantoms,” the second solo piano piece from her Four Sketches op. 15 (1892), American composer Amy Beach adopts a “strategic” approach to tonality that manipulates formal, harmonic, and linear closure. The analysis presented in this chapter demonstrates, through a close reading of the phrase structure, harmonic vocabulary, textures, motivic design, and voice leading of the piece, Beach’s aptitude for tonal obfuscation, which she employs to convey a sense of the epigraph she borrowed from Victor Hugo: “Toutes fragiles fleurs, sitôt que nées” (“Such fragile flowers, as soon as they are born”). The melody she constructs is indeed fragile, floating as it does over various “misharmonizations,” and including not one but two gaps in its descent from ‸5 to the tonic. By avoiding explicit melodic reference to ‸4 and ‸2 and making abundant use of registral coupling, Beach compellingly captures the ethereal quality of the flowers described by Hugo.

Floudas, Christodoulos A. Nonlinear and Mixed-Integer Optimization. Oxford University Press, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195100563.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Filling a void in chemical engineering and optimization literature, this book presents the theory and methods for nonlinear and mixed-integer optimization, and their applications in the important area of process synthesis. Other topics include modeling issues in process synthesis, and optimization-based approaches in the synthesis of heat recovery systems, distillation-based systems, and reactor-based systems. The basics of convex analysis and nonlinear optimization are also covered and the elementary concepts of mixed-integer linear optimization are introduced. All chapters have several illustrations and geometrical interpretations of the material as well as suggested problems. Nonlinear and Mixed-Integer Optimization will prove to be an invaluable source--either as a textbook or a reference--for researchers and graduate students interested in continuous and discrete nonlinear optimization issues in engineering design, process synthesis, process operations, applied mathematics, operations research, industrial management, and systems engineering.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the Supreme Court's decision inHurley v. Irish-American Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Group of Boston. The Hurley case involves the exclusion of an objectionable group with an objectionable view—pro-gay—from the longstanding annual St Patrick's Day Parade in Boston, and the Massachusetts law that deemed the exclusion illegal discrimination. The chapter addresses the following issues: Is a parade speech? Is a parade an event in the nature of metaphor and viewer construction rather than linear transmission of a message from a known, intending speaker to an audience that comprehends what the speaker means? Is the selecting of parade participants in the construction of the parade distinguishably expressive from the rejection of one or more participants? Is an orchestra director's selection of instrumentalists for a performance an act of free speech? What if the director deselects a violinist, not on grounds that he is a poor violinist, but on grounds that he is black and the aesthetics of racial diversity is not a message the director wishes to convey?

Abstract:
Jewish and Christian authors of the High Middle Ages not infrequently came into dialogue or conflict with each other over traditions drawn from ancient writings outside of the bible. Circulating in Hebrew and Latin translations, these included the two independent versions of the Testament of Naphtali in which the patriarch has a vision of the Diaspora, a shipwreck that scatters the twelve tribes. The Christian narrative is linear and ends in salvation; the Jewish narrative is circular and pessimistic. This book regards this as an emblematic text that illuminates relationships between interpretation, translation, and survival. Such noncanonical texts and their afterlives provided Jews and Christians alike with resources of fiction that they used to reconsider boundaries of doctrine and interpretation. Among the works that the book takes as exemplary of this medieval moment are the Book of Yosippon, a tenth-century Hebrew adaptation of Josephus with a wide circulation and influence in the later middle ages, and the second-century romance of Aseneth about the religious conversion of Joseph's Egyptian wife. Yosippon gave Jews a new discourse of martyrdom in its narrative of the fall of Jerusalem, and at the same time it offered access to the classical historical models being used by their Christian contemporaries. Aseneth provided its new audience of medieval monks with a way to reimagine the troubling consequences of unwilling Jewish converts.
