Abstract:
This chapter concludes discussion of the inter-war radio market by examining the specific strategies used by independent radio manufacturers to develop distinctive brands and thus avoid falling under the control of larger radio companies. These include innovative marketing, product differentiation through innovations in design, and strong, cooperative links with the retail trade. It also examines two alternative channels of supply for radio reception that did not require purchasing a receiver—relay services (which provided radio services from central stations by wire relays) and set rentals. Both offered the potential to extend the market to families that struggled to afford the cost of a radio set and—in the case of wire relays—to families without mains electricity. However, the expansion of these services—especially wire relays—was constrained by the determined opposition of the mainstream radio trade.

Guillery, Ray. Thalamic higher-order driver inputs as sensorimotor links. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198806738.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a closer look at the branching patterns of driver inputs to higher-order thalamic nuclei, and introduces their functional significance for discussion in later chapters. Their thalamic branches bring information for relay to higher cortical levels, including a copy of the information carried in the motor branches about anticipated cortical contributions to the control of actions and consequent changes in perceptions. In this way, the cortex can add to the control of an action when there is a mismatch between action and perception. Most of these branched axons that have so far been described come from early sensory areas and only a few from other, higher areas have been studied. These branching inputs are a part of the hierarchy of cortical areas that provide an opportunity for higher areas to monitor lower areas and, when needed, contribute to the motor control of the phylogenetically older brainstem and spinal centres. A far more extensive review of the branched thalamic driver inputs and their contributions to the control of actions than we have at present will be crucial for understanding the full complexity of the thalamic relay.

Full text
Abstract:
Individual differences in personality have long been linked to the use and misuse of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other drugs. Broadly, personality characteristics of high neuroticism and behavioral undercontrol/impulsivity appear to robustly relate to several substance use disorders (SUDs), although other traits have also been linked to SUDs. Much of the genetic basis of SUDs appears to be mediated by personality traits, which may relate to SUDs through a variety of non-mutually exclusive mechanisms that may work additively and synergistically, are indexed by various motivations associated with reward seeking and regulating negative emotion, and also relate to self-control and environment selection. Considerable change occurs in personality over the life course, and recent data show that the course of substance use and SUDs is associated with personality change. Although much progress has been made, several lines of future research could be pursued to further our understanding of the personality–SUD relation.

Maass, Vera Sonja. Coping with Control and Manipulation. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400632105.

Full text
Abstract:
You can't always avoid becoming a manipulator's target, but you CAN avoid becoming a victim. This revealing book gives you the power to resist the people who want to control you. Who is pushing your buttons—and what can you do about it? Coping with Control and Manipulation: Making the Difference Between Being a Target and Becoming a Victim examines the various spheres in which people encounter control and manipulation and shows how avoiding such victimization is absolutely possible. Knowing the players, understanding what motivates them, identifying their goals, and learning the techniques they use can help potential victims avoid, or at least survive, control and manipulation attempts. In her comprehensive look at this potentially harmful human drive, clinical psychologist Vera Sonja Maass shows just how prevalent control and manipulation are. She examines manipulators' goals and techniques as they relate to personality structure and offers a "menu" of techniques commonly used to exercise control. Arming readers through an in-depth analysis of controllers' behaviors toward targeted persons, Dr. Maass enables such targets to predict future actions—and prepare responses that will prevent victimization.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter will consider the value of anxiety, and how it might be reframed into something that is helpful in our interview. Anxiety is a precious commodity in the interview, and rather than trying to stifle or dampen it down to a more comfortable state of relaxed internal calm, anxiety should be examined, nurtured, and reframed into something that will overtly help. The chapter will revisit the idea of being mindfully anxious, and will consider how we can understand and control stress. This chapter describes practical techniques, including using a mood diary, to help us to control and utilize our anxiety in order to give our best in the interview.

Abstract:
Appropriate control of the HPA (hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical axis) is required for adaptation to physiological and environmental challenges. Inadequate control is linked to numerous stress-related pathologies, including PTSD, highlighting its importance in linking physiological stress responses with behavioral coping strategies. This chapter highlights neurocircuit mechanisms underlying HPA axis adaptation and pathology. Control of the HPA stress response is mediated by the coordinated activity of numerous limbic brain regions, including the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala. In general, hippocampal output inhibits anticipatory HPA axis responses, whereas amygdala subnuclei participate in stress activation. The prefrontal cortex plays an important role in inhibition of context-dependent stress responses. These regions converge on subcortical structures that relay information to paraventricular nucleus corticotropin-releasing hormone neurons, controlling the magnitude and duration of HPA axis stress responses. The output of these neural networks determines the net effect on glucocorticoid secretion, both within the normal adaptive range and in pathological circumstances.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an introduction to study design, data collection, and analysis in implementation science. Although the randomized controlled trial is frequently employed in implementation science, a number of alternatives are relied on for addressing the unique challenges present. Alternatives include the cluster randomized control trial, roll-out designs such as the stepped wedge, cumulative trial, and effectiveness–implementation hybrid designs. Data collection and data analytic techniques must also address the unique challenges present in implementation science. Often, implementation occurs over time, often, across complex, multilevel contexts. Implementation scientists frequently utilize mixed, qualitative, and quantitative methodologies for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data. Data represent the outer context of service systems and the inner context of organizations such that the data are often nested and hierarchical in nature. This chapter highlights the previously mentioned topics, particularly as they relate to currently funded implementation studies focused on the cancer control continuum.
