Full textThe aim of this thesis is to show the feasibility and the efficiency of active vibration control by structures made of functionally graded piezoelectric materials (FGPM). One bloc structure, made of FGPM, with piezoelectric properties embedded, is used to replace classical intelligent structures (a host structure equipped with piezoelectric patches) and to remove their disadvantages (stresses concentrations near interface, delamination of patches, …).This study focuses on the FGPM’s modelization, in particular on the graded behavior laws and on the development of finite elements of FGPM beams and plates. Two finite element are implemented, a beam element based on Timoshenko’s kinematics and a plate element based on an adaptive kinematics. Both elements have a numerical layers approximation for the electrical potential. These two elements are used for active vibration control simulations. In the beam case, the system is governed by a linear quadratic regulator. Otherwise, for the plate a fuzzy decentralized regulator is developed and used. Both systems beam and plate are observed thanks to a Luerberger’s observer. Static studies show the behavior of FGPM depending on the material gradation. In addition, active vibration simulations show the feasibility of control with both systems and the ability of fuzzy regulator to accommodate to sudden changes on external perturbations

Full textThis study is concerned with active digital control of the dynamic behaviour of flexible structures using a limited number of pick-ups and actuators, and with the feasibility aspect. The state of the art in the research area and some basis of the linear quadratic control theory are presented in the first chapter. The second chapter describes the steps of the design of a digital control for a single degree of freedom system, and for a distributed parameters structure. The finite element model of the structure is reduced by the modal method. Then the state form is sampled for comparing two strategies of control. The first one deals with the optimised global control of the first modes, and its influence on residual modes is analysed. The second one takes into account the uncoupled closed loop equations, and the modes which have the highest energy. The most effective controller is implemented on the processor which is in charge of the real time treatment. Then, the results of the experimental investigation carried on a simply supported flexible beam equipped with three proximity probes and one electromagnetic actuator, are in very good agreement with prediction. In the last chapter, the control is adapted to the dynamic behaviour of the rotor in bending supported by active magnetic bearings. A model is built and three kinds of control are proposed

Full textThe aim of this study is to perform the active damping of a sloshing structure, i. E. A free-clamped beam with a tank. The first step is to model and DIMENSION the structure. Because of its complexity, a Finite Elements software has been used, to compute the electromechanical parameters from which the model is deducted. Then comes the choice of the control law, which must handle a multimode and MIMO context and must be robust, the fluid/structure interactions and the several filling configurations of the tank being seen as uncertainties around a nominal model. Generalized Predictive Control has been chosen. The use of GPC to perform the active damping of the flexible structure is interesting. The controller is efficient and compact; moreover the results show the same global behaviour for the looped system, from one filling configuration of the tank to another

Full textThis study deals with neuro-fuzzy active control of structures. An original control method has been carried out. The neuro-fuzzy control design method lies in two steps. The first one concerns the neural identification of the dynamic behavior of the studied structure and is essential to the second one, which deals with the training of the associated controller. The main advantage of these two steps is that they are undertaken automatically. The proposed method is then applied to the control of the position and the modes of dynamic systems using magnetic actuators. The developed controllers are then implemented on a turbo pump system supported by active magnetic bearings (ALCATEL VACUUM TECHNOLOGY). They are efficient and the robustness is deeply better than the PID controllers initially implemented. The good agreement between experimental and simulation results validates both the neural identification and neuro-fuzzy control methods and the simulation model developed

Full textBecause of their lightness the aerospace structures are vulnerable to vibrations whose the amplitudes need to be mitigated through the active and the semi active methods. For extreme temperatures (<20oC and > 100oC), Coulomb friction might provide more structural damping than polymers. Nevertheless, there is a consensus to say that these friction-damping values are often lower than 5%. Moreover friction damping is amplitudedependent. Therefore, engineers have to tune the normal load in order to get the maximum damping for the average vibration level. The first objective of the thesis is to define a coefficient indicator of the ability of the tightening force to control the vibration levels. This coefficient is a design tool of real structures witch need controlling. The second objective is to design semi-active control laws of the clamping force for free and forced modal problem of two degrees of freedom. The ultimate goal is to design a device that can be integrated to an assembly structure for controlling the normal load in the joints and then experimentally test the effectiveness of the laws control for an academic or an industrial structure. The tightening control forces is effected with the use of piezoelectric patches

Full textThis thesis deals with active vibration control in one dirnensional structures. The control of flexural and extensional structural power flow is investigated. The instantaneous intensity is completely taken into account in the control algorithm, i. E. All the terms are considered in the real-time control process and, in particular, the evanescent waves are considered in this approach. The structural intensity has to be calculated from signals measured by several sensors. To do so, an intensity probe rnade of PVDF strain sensors is developped. The PVDF sensors are well suited for integration into structure in order to realize smart structures. A wave decomposition of the displacement field is used to calculate the structural power flow. A structural intensity optimal active control scheme is formulated and the numerical simulations illustrate the performance of this strategy. Experimental validation of the approach is conducted on a free-free beam and on a beam connected to a plate. A feedforward filtered-X LMS algorithm is adapted to control instantaneous intensity associated with flexural and extensional waves. This energy-based control problem involves a non-positive definite quadratic form in general. In this respect, the approach is limited to cases where the geometry is such that the intensity component will have the same sign for the control source and the primary disturbance. A finite difference scheme using PVDF strain sensors is presented and validated to measure and control structural power flow. The results show this strategy can be used to control vibration transfert in structures

Full textThe impact of noise on humans is increasingly at the heart of health issues. In a context of intense industrial competitiveness, these issues lie at the heart of the automotive sector, a truth that also applies to the tire industry. With the rise of electric vehicles, the rolling noise previously masked by other sources of vehicle-related noise pollution poses a real problem for passenger comfort. Vehicle structure, tires, and suspension systems can attenuate some of the undesirable effects of tire-road contact at high and low frequencies. However, few technical solutions have been deployed to address the vibratory phenomena transmitted by tire-wheel assemblies operating between 200 and 500 Hz. One reason for this, these tire-wheel assemblies present complex dynamics dependent on multiple factors, such as their internal pressure, loads, and rotation speed. This thesis is structured around three axes: a deeper understanding of the dynamic behavior of tire-wheel assemblies, the development and control of a set of experimental devices, and the realization of a system and a control law to reduce the forces transmitted in the hubs. Work carried out on four different experimental setups enabled us to minimize the uncertainties associated with the evolving dynamics of the structure to be controlled, thereby allowing for a better definition of the proposed solution's field of action. Based on these results, a network of piezoelectric transducers, used as sensors and actuators, has been proposed. Various robust control solutions have been suggested, including one that combines active control and a spatial modal filter, and another that exploits a sliding-mode controller. These solutions were first studied numerically using models based on experimental data, and then tested on the full-scale structure. In parallel with this work, robustness studies of the proposed solutions were carried out. The most advanced control system was finally tested under realistic operating conditions, involving loading, contact with the tire similar to that obtained with the roadway, and rotation of the assembly. Attenuation of the two target modes was achieved for different rotation speeds

Full textTensegrity systems are selfstressed reticulate space structure. They are defined as a set of elements maintained in compression inside a continous set of tense components, wich are generally cables. As lightweight frames, they are subject to deformation and vibration issues when faced to external loads, climate, human, or seismic. We are interested in this thesis to the vibration control of a tensegrity plane grid. The objective is the active damping of the first two modes, by controlling actuators integrated into the structure. A robust control law is developed to minimize the vibration level while maintaining the same efficiency when the stiffness or mass varies. Using simulation, new active tensegrity structures that use similaractuation principle can be proposed

Full textA given mechanical system is dependant on its environment at the time of its operation. The excitation sources and the connections with its environment makes the system produces adverse effects such as the noises and the vibrations. Such a system behaves according to positive and total natural laws'. Active control aims to act on these laws and makes it possible to confer on the system a behavior with better dynamic performances. With this intention one integrates into the basic structure a set of sensors to measure its vibratory state and a set of actuators to apply a command generated by a controller in order to bring the structure in a state fixed before. In this work, it is a question of studying the active control of light and flexible structures using peizoelectric materials. These structures are abundantly used in aeronautical construction. A fundamental problem arises during the control of such structures : it is the phenomenon of the modal contamination (effet Spillower) which occurs as instabilities

Full textThis memory contributes to the study of the active control of the transient behaviour of flexible rotors. They propose a Fuzzy Modal Control (F. M. C) based on the feed-back of modal state of the structure and applied by an active plan composed of two piezoelectric pushers. First, the concept F. M. C. Is validated via an application a beam whose dynamic behaviour controlled by an action plan composed of two piezoelectric pushers. Optimal controllers of Linear Quadratic Gaussian type (L. Q. G. ) are set up and are taken for reference to validate the strategy using of controllers F. M. C. The application is carried out in two phases. The first relates to the control of the beam in one of its transverse directions is realised. The results of simulations and the experiments are in agreement and have a good effectiveness of the proposed controllers. The second relates to the extension of the method in two transverse directions. The feasibility of the control of a flexible beam according to two directions by a plan of piezoelectric actuators was shown. Secondly, we are interested more particularly in the application of the F. M. C. To control the transient dynamic behaviour of a flexible rotor subjected to external disturbances. The control force is applied in an action plan by means of an active bearing equipped with two piezoelectric pushers. The F. M. C. Is used to control the first modes of the system. The results of simulations show that this control is effective, the rejection of the disturbances is fast and the damping observed on the response to the unbalance with the passage of the critical speeds is significant. The robustness of control proposed absorbs the non linearity of the dynamic behaviour of the rotor in particular those which are due to evolution of its modal base according to its speed of rotation and those related to uncertainties in the model of the rotor/actuators

Full textWhen vibrating structures are subjected to large displacements, coupling may occur between the vibrations and the displacements inducing possibly strongly non-linear behaviour. In this case, linear control algorithms and independent control strategy are no longer suitable. This study deals with the non-linear control of Bi-articulated structures. A model that combines both finite element (FE) discretisation, taking into account strains/electric field coupling, and global behaviour is carried out. Electromechanical and piezoelectric actuators carry out the multivariable control. The control strategy developed consists in weighting the output of parallel state controllers, calculated for the p discretized operating points crossed during the progression of the structure’s dynamic behaviour. The multivariable control u is obtained by weighting interpolation functions fi of the linear quadratic control gains Ki of each controller optimised according to large displacements. The first application to Bi-articulated rigid beam systems shows, in comparison with a stable linear control, that non-linear control is by far the better of the two. This is mainly due to increased efficiency of motor torque use. The second application of the proposed non-linear control algorithm concerns a Bi-articulated flexible beam system modelled by two rigid body modes and five flexible modes. The control obtained is robust regarding both stability and performance. Quasi-steady controlled dynamic behaviour is obtained during movement. The last application deals with a flexible link featuring two piezoelectric sensors and one pair of the piezoelectric actuators pasted to the both sides of the beam. The associated model is adjusted by optimisation. The control of the beam, clamped-free or articulated by the geared motor, shows performance. The simulated results accords with the experimental ones

Full textThis thesis deals with the development of design tools needed for the realization of hybridcomposite materials incorporating piezoelectric patches electrically shunted by negativecapacitance circuits. The impact of uncertainty on the performance of these innovative hybridsystems is yet unknown or poorly controlled, which can compromise their reliability and harmtheir industrial applicability. The first thesis contribution has focused on the development andcharacterization of a digital shunt circuit adapted to an adaptive control for a structureequipped with a large number of patches. The design steps and electronic device design arepresented and led to a prototype that has shown experimentally its ability to implement anegative capacitance shunt. The second contribution of the thesis is the analysis of therobustness of these devices by considering the whole system, from geometric to materialsparameters, including the electrical parameters. An analysis of the most significantparameters is proposed and has highlighted the tolerable uncertainty ranges for a givenefficiency. Finally, the combination of the developed digital devices inside a distributednetwork provides a better reduction of acoustic waves or vibrations by increasing theefficiency bandwidth. The use of the developed digital circuit in such distributed systems hasbeen made possible by its miniaturization, adaptability and integrability. The last contributionof the thesis therefore focuses on prospects in fully integrated active interfaces

Full textSmart structures have increasingly become present in different industry applications and particularly in the fields of aeronautics and civil engineering. These structures have features that allow interactions with the environment, adapting their characteristics according to the needs (stiffness, damping, viscosity, etc.), monitoring their health or controlling their vibrations. Today smart structure active control methods do not respond appropriately to damage, despite the capacity of external disturbances good rejection. Damage-tolerant active control (DTAC) is a recent research area that aims to develop integrated approaches to reduce the vibrations while monitoring the integrity of the structure, identifying damage occurrence and reconfiguring the control law of the adopted active vibration control method. This thesis contributes to DTAC area, proposing a novel modal control framework and some applying strategies. Developed methods focus in non-collocated flexible structures, where multiples piezoelectric sensors and actuators are used to attenuate damaged structure vibration. The chapters present four main topics and the conclusions. Chapter 2 reviews the regular suboptimal H∞ problem and its respective solution based on the linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach, which is a fundamental tool for the development of subsequent topics. Chapter 3 introduces the modal H∞-norm based method for vibration control, which reveals high modal selectivity, allowing control energy concentration on damage effects and presenting robustness to spillover and parameter variation. A new control strategy is developed in Chapter 4, taking into account existing knowledge about the structure stressed regions with high probability of damage occurrence, leading to specific requirements in the modal H∞ controller design. A structural health monitoring (SHM) technique assesses each damaged mode behavior, which is used to design a preventive controller. Chapter 5 presents a novel modal double-loop control methodology to deal with the unpredictability of damage, nevertheless ensuring a good compromise between robustness and performance to both healthy and damaged structures. For this purpose, the first loop modal controller is designed to comply with regular requirements for the healthy structure behavior, and the second loop controller is reconfigured aiming to ensure satisfactory performance and robustness when and if damage occurs, based on a state-tracking observer and an SHM technique to adapt the controller online. In all these chapters, simulated (analytical and finite elements based) and/or experimental aluminum structures are used to examine the proposed methodology under the respective control strategies. The last chapter subsumes the achieved results for each different approach described in the previous chapters

Full textOn-board structures such as electronic boards are submitted to severe stresses, particularly vibration. This extreme environment affects the structure’s expected lifetime. Some techniques can be used to increase their lifetime particularly in the case of complex structures. This dissertation presents firstly a method to reduce vibration using modal active control applied to on-board MBDA Printed Circuit Boards (PCB). This modal strategy permits to reduce on-board energy and to target the control energy only on the controlled modes using a minimum number of components. The control uses piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The method has been numerically and experimentally tested on the PCB with industrial boundary conditions and excitation levels. In the case of industrial mass production, dispersion leads to changes in mechanical and electromechanical properties. Moreover, boundary condition variations can induce mechanical properties variations. These variations can modify control performance and stability. This dissertation presents secondly a modal semi-adaptive control strategy, based on identification algorithms, aim at increasing control robustness. This strategy has been numerically and experimentally tested on the PCB for frequency and torque variations respectively. Finally, in the case of on-board structures, on-board energy used by the control must be minimal to reduce on-board mass. The last part of this dissertation presents a modal semi-active control strategy to eliminate operational energy. This method has been numerically tested on the most damaging mode of the PCB. This method could be used to increase PCB lifetime in future research

Full textThis thesis includes modelization, experimental investigations and active control of the aeroacoustics of cavities under low mach number turbulent flows. A progressive formulation for the stability analysis of the fluid interface separating two uniform flows is first presented. The oscillation stages show dependance to the geometric configuration and to the Mach number. An experimental model of adjustable dimensions is then investigated using pressure measurements. The extensive resulting data partially validate the chosen theoretical analysis. A vibrating apparatus is designed and applied to the active control of the aeroacoustic stages with focus on the fluid-resonant conditions. Proof is given that this system leads to a deterministic modulation of the coupling intensity. Finally, a Particle Image Velocimetry system is synchronized with chosen oscillation stages in order to aerodynamically validate the theoretical approach and the active control efficiency

Full textThe aim of the study is to develop a condensed procedure in order to obtain reduced analytical models in medium and high frequency ranges. The starting pointis the modal sampling method [J. -L. Guyader - Modal sampling method for the vibration study of systems of high modal density- J. Acout. Soc. Am. , 1990, Vol. 88(5), p. 2269-2276] used to obtain predictions of the flexural vibrations of homogeneous beams. When a large number of modes control the vibration response of a structure, this procedure enables the grouping together of the modes of the structure in order to predict global energy quantities per frequency band. This method lies between the classical modal methods well adapted for low frequency ranges where every mode is taken into account, and the statistical methods for high frequency ranges which consider an << averaged mode» using the concept of modal density. A condensed procedure is developed. Reduced models are obtained for simple structures (plates, cylindrical shells) modelled by analytical methods. The performance of the reduced models is systematically assessed for different structural and vibro-acoustic problems of increasing difficulty: rectangular homogeneous plates, rectangular plates which carry a number of concentrated masses , plates with elastic boundary conditions, coupled plates, and cylindrical radiating shells in an infinite acoustic medium

Full textIt is now a reality that in the vasteness of the civil engineering discipline, the engenier has to contend with a multiplicity of constraints. This generally relates to economics, confortability, reliability and security. Although these setbacks seem simple to enumerate, their strict application and a quick glance at the availible literature is enough to give a good idea of the complexity of the problem. To arrive at satisfactory solutions a colossal effort has been made by researchers on the field even though sometimes to the detriment of simplicity. A good number of concepts have been proposed amongst which the theorie of active control is now gaining much ground as an efficient control tool. It is thus interesting for adoption and adding a new constraint (soil-structure coupling) becomes important. Three studies would thus be undertaken to better identify the relevant problems called into play:1-structural active control to highlight its efficiency,2-the dynamic response of a foundation in a semi infinite medium (soil). Two new methods shall be proposed and validated. 3-active control taking into account soil-structure couplings. The realisation of these three studies necessitated the elaboration and validation of a calculation code based on the three dimensional finite element method, integrating the concept of sub-structuration

Full textThis research aims at solving a particular vibration control problem of smart structures. We aim at reducing the vibration in a specific zone of the smart structure under the disturbance that covers a wide frequency band. Moreover, at this specific zone, neither actuation nor sensing is possible. Here we face several main challenges. First, we need to control the vibration of a specific zone of the structure while we only have access to measurements at other zones. Second, the wide bandwidth of the disturbance implies that numerous modes should be controlled at the same time which requires the use of multiple actuators and sensors. This leads to a MIMO controller which is difficult to obtain using classical controller design methods. Third, the so-called spillover problem must be avoided which is to guarantee the closed-loop stability when the model-based controller is applied on the actual setup. To tackle these challenges, we investigate two control strategies: the centralized control and the distributed control. For centralized control, we propose a methodology that allows us to obtain a simple MIMO controller that accomplishes these challenges. First, several modeling and identification techniques are applied to obtain an accurate low-order model of the smart structure. Then, an H_∞ control based synthesis method with a particularly proposed H_∞ criterion is applied. This H_∞ criterion integrates multiple control objectives, including the main challenges. In particular, the spillover problem is transformed into a robust stability problem and will be guaranteed using this criterion. The obtained H_∞ controller is a standard solution of the H_∞ problem. The final controller is obtained by further simplifying this H_∞ controller without losing the closed-loop stability and degrading the performance. This methodology is validated on a beam structure with piezoelectric transducers and the central zone is where the vibration should be reduced. The effectiveness of the obtained controller is validated by simulations and experiments. For distributed control, we consider the same beam structure and the same control objectives. There exist methods aiming at designing distributed controllers of spatially interconnected system. This research proposes a FEM based method, combined with several model reduction techniques, that allows to spatially discretize the beam structure and deduce the state-space models of interconnected subsystems. The design of distributed controllers will not be tackled in this research

Full textIn this thesis, and with the aim to improve the power quality, we have theoretically and experimentally studied two types of filtering, the shunt active power filter and hybrid, passive and active power filter. The modelling and simulation of a parallel active filter with three types of current controllers (MLI, classical hysteresis and modulated hysteresis) are first studied. The behavior of the active filter under transient conditions is also presented. Then, we have experimentally validated the simulation results obtained for the modulated hysteresis. The test bench consists of a parallel active filter, a non-linear load, a digital control system DSPACE (DS1104) and an analog card. Next, we studied by modelling and simulation the hybrid filter. For both cases, the use of multi-variable filter improves the filtering performances. An experimental prototype called "FPGA in the Loop" has been implemented to validate digital control of hybrid filter. In addition, a comparison between the two filters has been realised in order to find the best way to reduce network harmonic currents
