Abstract:
This open access book offers a systematic overview of the relations between comics and religion from the perspective of cultural sociology. How do comics function in religions? How does religion appear in comics? How does the reading of comics relate to rituals, ethics, and worldviews? And how do graphic narratives inform us about contemporary society and the changing role of religion? Contributing authors, use examples from across the globe to explore a diversity of religions, spirituality and dispersed notions of the sacred – including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Indian and Japanese religions, Anthroposophy, Hinduism and Norse religion – but also the rituals, ethics, and worldviews that pop up in the comics milieu itself. In the burgeoning field of comics studies, research on the religious aspects from a sociological point of view is missing, a gap filled by the current contributors, making this volume as relevant to students of religion in popular culture, cultural sociologists and students of comics. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by The Faculty for Humanities and Education and the University Library at the University of Agder, Norway.

Postema, Don C. Ethics Committees and Consultation in Mental Health. Edited by John R. Peteet, Mary Lynn Dell, and Wai Lun Alan Fung. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190681968.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding the role of ethics committees in providing ethics consultations, ethics education, and ethics-related policies is the context for exploring the relationship of ethics, psychiatry, and religious and spiritual beliefs. After a brief history of biomedical ethics in the United States since the mid-20th century, this chapter presents several case studies that exemplify frequently encountered tensions in these relationships. The central contention is that respecting these beliefs is not equivalent to acquiescing to ethical claims based on them. Rigorous critical reflection and psychiatric insight, coupled with the values embedded in the social practices of healthcare, provide the grounds for evaluating the weight and bearing of religious and spiritual beliefs in ethically complex cases. This is one contribution that ethics committees can make at the intersection of psychiatry and religion.

Miller, Christian B., ed. The Bloomsbury Handbook of Ethics. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350217911.

Abstract:
Updated and expanded to represent the fundamental questions at the heart of philosophical ethics today, the 2nd edition of The Bloomsbury Handbook of Ethics covers the key topics in metaethics and normative ethical theory. This edition includes 12 fully revised chapters, and 3 newly commissioned contributions from a range of esteemed academics who provide accessible introductions to their own areas of expertise. The first part of the book covers the field of metaethics, including subjects such as moral realism, moral psychology, experimental ethics, and evolutionary ethics, as well as two new chapters that respond to ethical debates within moral relativism and moral responsibility that enable students and scholars to better navigate this complicated ethical terrain. Moving onto normative ethical theory, the second part of the book ranges across morality and religion, consequentialism, and particularism, as well as Kantian, virtue, feminist ethics, and Confucian ethics. This comprehensive edition provides a one-stop resource for students of ethics, which includes updated introductory overviews of the field and methodological issues, as well as an appendix of additional resources, including technical terms in ethics.

Abstract:
This chapter defines several commonly used terms in discussions of world religions, spirituality, and the contributions to and overlapping concerns of theological ethics and bioethics. Brief summaries of six major world faith traditions are offered, including historical origins, demographic information, basic theological tenets, and key themes in the religions’ ethics. Attitudes and beliefs about life, illness, suffering, medical care, end of life, and mental health care are discussed. Points at which theological ethics inform use of the Jonsen Four Topics Model are reviewed. Readers are provided a list of resources for additional reading and study at the intersection of theological and medical ethics. Although this chapter is not intended to be an exhaustive review of major world faith traditions, readers are reminded that understanding aspects of the religious and spiritual traditions and their imperatives for living may be of great importance to patients and their ethical decision making.

Abstract:
The contributions to this volume analyse the complex relations between religious traditions, groups and ideas on the one hand, and (neo-)nationalism on the other. They do so on a conceptual level as well as with regard to concrete contexts and countries. They shed light on these relations from historical, sociological, theological and ethical perspectives, and contribute to the discourse on neo-nationalism, populism and public theology. While the first part of the book situates religion and (neo-)nationalism in a globalised world, the second puts the concepts of neo-nationalism, populism, religion in context. The third part presents different case studies (particularly from European countries), and the final part concludes with ethical and political perspectives.
