Abstract:

This thesis examines law and policy in the book publishing industry in Ghana, with an evaluation of the success of government-sponsored institutions that have been established for the purpose of publishing development in the country. Issues concerning publishing development in Ghana and other countries in Africa have attracted considerable debate and coverage in the literature. The focus of the debate has been mainly centred on challenges confronting publishing development in the continent and the promotion of sustainable schoolbooks provision. Whilst there is a body of existing literature on the historical development of book publishing and its challenges, the role of law and policy, and the contributions of government-sponsored institutions to publishing development has not been explored. This thesis therefore provides the first analysis of law and policy, and an evaluation of government-sponsored institutions. In an attempt to fill this gap, this research identifies law and policy, examines the rationale for policy formulation, the policy-making process itself, the experiences of various stakeholders in the formulation of these policies and issues relating to the implementation of policy. It also evaluates the success of government-sponsored institutions by examining how their work has influenced book development and publishing in the country. The data for this research comprise legislation, policy documents and recorded interviews. These were analysed using the framework that was developed for book policy analysis. The use of the framework has been particularly useful in the analysis because it is compatible with the critical realist approach. Over two empirical chapters, the use of content analysis provides a thorough insight of the social, economic and political context, within the context of Ghana, for which institutions dedicated to publishing development were established as well as the formulation of book policies. Although government-sponsored institutions have provided considerable support to publishing development, the findings suggest that their operations are hindered due to a lack of funds and logistics. The findings again suggest that both national and international legislation have not been adequately beneficial to publishing development. A third empirical chapter, which focuses on the interview data for policy development offers an in-depth analysis into the policy-making process and the challenges that are associated with the implementation of policy. The findings suggest existing policy is limited in terms of scope of book publishing, and even with this limitation, there is a lack of transparency in the procurement process. A major challenge of the book publishing industry in Ghana is the lack of resources to enforce legislation and implement policies. Public policy analysis is not a new concept, however this research developed a framework for book policy analysis, a framework that combines concepts from general public policy analysis and in the specific area of information science as well as guidelines from UNESCO s guide to formulating book policies in a way that allowed the content of book policies to be analysed. The research also recommends that institutions should be strengthened through review and restructuring, and to review the textbook policy towards the development of a national book policy that will recognise book publishing as a strategic national industry.

DE ENSINO A tese tem como hipótese a importância do realismo jurídico norteamericano para o desenvolvimento do ensino jurídico e das escolas de direito norte-americanas. Para isto três autores serão abordados: Wesley N. Hohfeld, Walter W. Cook e Karl N. Llewellyn. O primeiro capítulo trará uma introdução sobre as questões metodológicas do trabalho. O segundo capítulo fará uma digressão histórica no direito norte-americano para podermos compreender o contexto de surgimento do realismo jurídico. O terceiro capítulo abordará Wesley N. Hohfeld, sua importância para o surgimento do movimento realista e também sua contribuição para a evolução do ensino jurídico norte-americano. O quarto capítulo tratará de Walter W. Cook, sua teoria e sua experiência fracassada no Instituto para o Estudo de Direito de Johns Hopkins. O quinto capítulo tratará especificamente do surgimento do realismo jurídico através dos escritos de Karl N. Llewellyn e também de sua teoria das funções do direito. A crítica de Llewellyn ao ensino jurídico da época será ponto central do capítulo. O sexto capítulo demonstrará o porquê de o movimento realista ter sucumbido tão rápido, bem como abordará o seu legado. Finalmente a conclusão demonstrará as limitações do trabalho e suas principais contribuições. The thesis has as its main hypothesis the importance of American legal realism to the development of American Law Schools and legal education. In order to accomplish that, three authors will be faced: Wesley N. Hohfeld, Walter W. Cook e Karl N. Llewellyn. The first chapter will bring an introduction about the methodological issues of the present work. The second chapter will make a historical digression on the American law so that the reader can understand in which context American legal realism appeared. The third chapter will be about Wesley N. Hohfeld and his importance to the appearance of American legal realism and also his contribution to legal education. The fourth chapter will treat Walter W. Cook’s theory and his failure in the John’s Hopkins Institute. The fifth chapter will treat specifically about the appearance of the legal realism movement through Karl N. Llewellyn articles and his law-jobs theory. Also, his criticism about legal education at the time will be the core of this chapter. The sixth chapter will demonstrate why American legal realism was not successful in its attempt and why it didn’t last long. It also will demonstrate the important legacy left by the movement. Finally, the conclusion will demonstrate the thesis’s limitations and its main contributions.

Abstract:

This qualitative study has examined the overall Norwegian contribution to international police reform missions (IPRMs) using a multiple case study design to compare three different missions where Noway has contributed relatively significantly over a period of time; the bilateral project in Serbia (JUNO); the multilateral UN mission to Liberia (UNIMIL); and finally the regional EU mission to Afghanistan (EUPOL). The case studies have subsequently been systematically compared through a narrative cross-case analysis where similarities and variations has been categorised into three stages; pre-mission, in-mission and post-mission, using analytical software for qualitative studies. Motives and goals for involvement were identified, subsequently set against the police officers actual experience in each mission, and their understanding of the overall picture in relation to their responsibilities. Substantial empirical research work was undertaken to inform the individual case study's including 99 open ended interviews, consisting of 36 Norwegian police officers (practioners), 21 co-operating partners in the missions and 42 experienced senoir officials working with IRPMs throughout the world. Also, oberservational fieldwork and study trpis to 11 countries were conducted, and a wide range of secondary data was reviewed to ensure reliability and validity throughout the thesis. The fidings suggest that there are severe impediments to achoeve a successful outcome of IPRMs, but that the responsibility cannot be attributed to one organisation or country alone. The experiences of Norwegian police officers deployed to different types of IPRMs paint a picture of an international arena torn between idealism and realism, one characterised by a pragmatic approach focused on action and quantity rather than development and quality. Because of a complete absence of overall doctrines and a system that is not sufficiently well grounded, IPRMs suffer from an absence of long-term strategies, goals, success criteria, and planning. Instead, goals are often vague and over-ambitious, demanding results that promote output rather thanoutcome, consequently at the risk of the individual police officer who operates in adverse operational working conditions. The findings reveals a system that currently fails to recognise the need for better and more extensive planning and preparation for the individual police officer pre-mission, that fails to acknowledge the role and professionalism of the police officers in-mission; and that fails to ensure proper debriefing and reintegration procedures for the police officer post-mission. International relations theory was used as a basis for the macro-level of this study, but no mid-range theory was found to inform the meso- and micro-level. Herein lies the original theoretical contribution to this field - it aims to inform the development of internationation police science, one that can substantiate a much needed future universal doctrine on international police reform missions.

Abstract:

This thesis is driven by the motivation to explore a way of working collaboratively that closely reflects the World Wide Web (WWW), more specifically the potential of the Web architecture built on Semantic Web technologies and Linked Data. The goal is to describe a generic approach and architecture that satisfies the needs for loose collaboration and collective knowledge construction as exemplified by the applications described in this thesis. This thesis focuses on a contribution-centric architecture which allows for flexible applications that support loose forms of collaboration. The first research question deals with how Web-based collective knowledge construction can be supported. The second research question explores the characteristics of collective knowledge construction with respect to the Open World Assumption (OWA). The OWA implies that complete knowledge about a subject cannot be assumed at any time, which is one of the most fundamental properties of the WWW. The third research question investigates how Semantic Web technologies be used in order to support such a contribution-centric architecture. The thesis and its underlying publications are of a technical character and are always grounded in theoretical models and considerations that have led to functional implementations. The research has evolved in iterative development processes and was explicitly directed at building applications that can be used in collaborative settings and that are based on standardized Web technologies. One of the main outcomes, an information model, was developed together with such an application and provides a number of novel approaches in the context in which it was designed. The validity of the presented research is supported by evaluations from different perspectives: a list of implemented applications and showcases, results from structured interviews that have investigated the suitability for various resource annotation processes, as well as scalability aspects. The thesis concludes that it is ultimately up to the application how "loose" the collaboration should be and to which extent the OWA is incorporated. The presented architecture provides a toolkit to support the development of loosely collaborative applications. The showcased applications allow the construction of collaborative conceptual models and to collaboratively annotate educational resources. They show the potential of the used technology stack and the introduced contribution-centric architecture that sits on top if it. QC 20140417

Abstract:

Dans le domaine infographie, l'animation par ordinateur désigne notre capacité à faire se mouvoir, via un ensemble de programmes ou d'algorithmes, des représentations géométriques virtuelles d'objets le plus souvent réels. Si les jeux vidéos ou le champ des effets spéciaux sont les premiers domaines d'application, le développement des technologies de l'information dans notre vie de tous les jours a ouvert la voie à un grand nombre d'autres utilisations. L'animation à proprement parler nécessite de spécifier le comportement dans l'espace et le temps de l'objet considéré. Il existe un grand nombre de méthodes permettant de réaliser cette spécification. Parmi celles-ci, la catégorie des méthodes dites "basées données" permettent d'obtenir un réalisme important en s'appuyant sur des exemples capturés du monde réel. A ces méthodes sont associés trois problèmes fondamentaux : - un problème d'acquisition : quels sont les bons descripteurs du mouvement ? Comment, et via quel médium, les capter du monde réel ? - un problème de généralisation : comment généraliser l'information obtenue à partir de quelques exemples ? Comment en caractériser leur portée ? - un problème de contrôle : par quel biais introduire cette information dans une boucle d'animation ? Peut on la modifier pour l'adapter à des cadres différents de ceux de la captation ? Pris ensemble, ces problèmes permettent d'établir des schémas d'Analyse/Synthèse, où l'information peut être capturée grâce à une formalisation (un modèle) numérique du phénomène considéré, puis utilisée à son tour dans la définition même du modèle. Ce document présente des travaux de recherche dans cette direction menés par moi et mon équipe depuis 2004. Deux domaines d'application "phare" sont considérés : l'animation de personnages virtuels, et plus particulièrement des personnages doués de la faculté de communiquer en langue des signes, et la simulation de foules de gens guidée par les données. Dans les deux cas est montré comment les données peuvent interagir avec les modèles numériques. Nous tentons même de mettre en avant l'émergence de cercles vertueux où l'on s'aperçoit que de meilleures données entrainent de meilleurs modèles, qui à leur tour autorisent la captation de nouvelles données et ainsi de suite. Ainsi cette thématique ouvre un large panel de problèmes évoluant de l'apprentissage à la simulation numérique.

Abstract:

La réalité mixte apporte certains avantages aux applications industrielles. Elle peut, entre autres, faciliter la visualisation et validation de projets ou assister des opérateurs durant des tâches spécifiques. Les systèmes de projection (PBS), tels que les CAVE ou la réalité augmentée spatiale, fournissent un environnement de réalité mixte permettant une collaboration directe avec des utilisateurs externes. Dans cette thèse, nous visons à améliorer l'utilisation des systèmes de projection pour des applications industrielles en abordant deux défis majeurs: (1) améliorer les composantes techniques des PBS et (2) augmenter l'expérience utilisateur dans les PBS. En tant que premier défi technique, nous visons à améliorer les systèmes de suivi de mouvements optiques. Nous proposons une approche permettant d’élargir l’espace de travail de ces systèmes grâce à deux méthodes. La première permet de suivre les mouvements à partir d’une seule caméra tandis ce que la deuxième permet de contrôler les caméras et suivre les objets dans l’espace de travail. Le système qui en résulte fournit des performances acceptables pour des applications en réalité mixte tout en augmentant considérablement l'espace de travail. Un tel système de suivi de mouvement peut permettre de mieux exploiter le potentiel des systèmes de projection et d’élargir le champ possible des interactions. En tant que deuxième défi technique, nous concevons un casque « tout-en-un » pour la réalité augmentée spatiale mobile. Le casque rassemble à la fois un système de projection et un système de suivi de mouvements qui sont embarqués sur la tête de l'utilisateur. Avec un tel système, les utilisateurs sont capables de se déplacer autour d'objets tangibles et de les manipuler directement à la main tout en projetant du contenu virtuel par-dessus. Nous illustrons notre système avec deux cas d'utilisation industriels: le prototypage virtuel et la visualisation médicale. Enfin, nous abordons le défi qui vise à améliorer l’expérience utilisateur dans les PBS. Nous proposons une approche permettant d’incarner un personnage virtuel et d’augmenter la perception spatiale des utilisateurs dans les PBS. Pour ce faire, nous ajoutons l’ombre virtuelle des utilisateurs dans les systèmes de projection immersifs. L'ombre virtuelle est directement corrélée aux mouvements des utilisateurs afin qu'ils la perçoivent comme si c'était la leur. Nous avons effectué une expérience afin d'étudier l'influence de la présence de l'ombre virtuelle sur le comportement des utilisateurs Mixed reality brings some advantages to industrial applications. It can, among others, facilitate visualizing and validating projects or assist operators during specific tasks. Projection-based Systems (PBS), such as CAVEs or spatial augmented reality provide a mixed reality environment enabling straightforward collaboration with external users. In this thesis, we aim at improving the usage of PBS for industrial applications by considering two main challenges: (1) improving the technical components of PBS and (2) improving the user experience when using PBS. As a first technical challenge, we propose to address the improvement of the tracking component. We introduce an approach that enables increasing the workspace of optical tracking systems by using two methods. As a first method, we propose to use monocular tracking. As a second method, we propose to use controlled cameras that follow the targets across the workspace. The resulting system provides acceptable performances for mixed reality applications while considerably increasing the workspace. Such a tracking system can make it easier to use large projection-based displays and can widen the range of available interactions. As a second technical challenge, we design an “all-in-one” headset for mobile spatial augmented reality on tangible objects. The headset gathers both a projection and a tracking system that are embedded on the user’s head. With such a system, the users are able to move around tangible objects and to manipulate them directly by hand while projecting virtual content over them. We illustrate our system with two industrial use cases: virtual prototyping and medical visualization. Finally, we address the challenge that aims at improving the user experience when using PBS. We introduce a method that provides virtual embodiment and increases the spatial perception of the users when using PBS. To do so we add the user’s virtual shadow in immersive projection-based systems. The virtual shadow is dynamically mapped to users’ movements in order to make them perceive the shadow as if it was their own. We then carry out an experiment to study the influence of the presence of the virtual shadow on the user experience and behavior

Abstract:

Ce travail concerne la realisation et la caracterisation structurale d'un materiau ceramique composite spinelle-zircone. Un precurseur de zircone est ajoute a une poudre de spinelle, mgal#2o#4, de grande purete. Le controle des reactions d'hydrolyse et de condensation, dans le systeme, n-propoxyde de zirconium-n-propanol-eau, est realise grace a un modificateur chimique, l'acetylacetone. La poudre de spinelle est introduite dans la solution contenant le precurseur avant gelification. A la suite du sechage la poudre subit une calcination. La temperature de cristallisation de zro#2 est alors plus elevee que celle du precurseur seul. La zircone apparait sous sa forme tetragonale metastable et sa temperature de transformation vers la phase monoclinique stable est egalement sensiblement modifiee. La poudre composite obtenue est constituee de cristaux de zircone nanometriques greffes sur les grains de spinelle. L'ajout de zircone ameliore l'aptitude a la densification du materiau. La zircone contenue dans le materiau dense reste tetragonale jusqu'a des teneurs de l'ordre de 20% en masse. La stabilisation de la zircone metastable ne semble pas etre due, de maniere preponderante, a un dopage par la magnesie, car une exsolution de mgo de la phase spinelle vers la zircone est peu probable. Ce procede de fabrication permet d'obtenir une microstructure fine et homogene, avec des grains de spinelle de taille comprise entre 200 et 600 nm. Les cristaux de zircone, dont la taille varie de 50 a 200 nm, se trouvent aussi bien en position intergranulaire qu'en situation intragranulaire. Les particules intragranulaires de zro#2 tetragonale se presentent en epitaxie avec le reseau cubique de la matrice spinelle, malgre l'ecart important de parametre de maille. Cette situation est probablement responsable du taux relativement eleve des microdeformations mises en evidence par l'etude du profil des raies de diffractions des rayons x.

Abstract:

L'objectif de cette thèse d'automatique industrielle et humaine consiste en la contribution à l'analyse et la modélisation de l'opérateur humain soumis à une tâche de télépistage visuo-manuel dans un environnement virtuel et tridimensionnel généré par des images de synthèse. À cette fin, l'opérateur doit piloter à l'aide d'une boule à capteurs optiques, composante de l'organe de commande DIMENSION6, un objet suiveur pouvant simuler un véhicule fictif. L’opérateur humain a pour consigne de télépister la cible en conservant pendant toute la durée des tests effectués dans les différentes configurations géométriques une distance de sécurité comprise entre une distance minimale et maximale à ne pas dépasser. L’opérateur humain se positionne par rapport à cette cible à l'aide d'une mire équipée d'un indicateur de proximité. Pour mener ces différentes expériences, une analyse exploratoire est menée afin de réaliser la plate-forme expérimentale intitulée BALSIDEL comportant les plus larges possibilités existantes, tant du point de vue matériel que du point de vue logiciel. Cette plate-forme multimédia supporte un ensemble d'études visant à mettre au point une méthodologie d'évaluation quantitative et qualitative de la performance de télépistage des opérateurs humains. Les variables mesurées se regroupent en deux classes : temporelles et globales. À l'issue des expérimentations effectuées sur une population de 40 individus, un système d'acquisition et de dépouillement des données est élaboré. Ces données après interprétation ont permis d'élaborer un modèle du comportement de l'opérateur humain soumis à une tâche de télépistage. Plusieurs classes de comportement de télépistage sont extraites. L’originalité de cette étude réside dans l'analyse des comportements de télépistage selon l'axe de profondeur de l'écran affectés par un ensemble de contraintes (limites biomécaniques, dimensions spatiales, immersion virtuelle, nombre de degrés de liberté important) influant sur la performance de télépistage de l'opérateur humain.

Abstract:

L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier l’utilisation d’Interfaces Cerveau-Ordinateur (ICOs) au sein de la Réalité Virtuelle (RV) et de la Réalité Augmentée (RA). Notre but est d’évaluer la compatibilité entre les systèmes basés sur une ICO et la RV/RA, de concevoir de nouveaux outils pour la visualisation de l’activité cérébrale basée sur la RV/RA, et finalement de proposer de nouveaux usages pour les ICOs, plus particulièrement en combinaison avec des vêtements intelligents. Afin de réaliser ces objectifs, nous avons tout d’abord réalisé une étude de faisabilité concernant l’association entre une ICO et la RV. Notre objectif était d’étudier l’influence de l’activité motrice sur une ICO. Nous avons conçu un système similaire à un jeu vidéo, servant comme support à une étude utilisateur montrant que l’ICO peut être utilisée avec succès, même lorsque les participants exécutent une activité musculaire exigeante. Dans un second temps, nous avons également proposé des outils de visualisation de l’activité cérébrale basés sur la RV/RA. Notre premier système nommé «Mind-Mirror» superpose un cerveau virtuel représentant l’activité cérébrale d’un utilisateur à l’image de celui-ci dans un miroir. Une étude utilisateur a montré qu’aucune perte significative de performance de l’ICO n’a été constatée, même avec une complexité additionnelle due à l’affichage basé sur la RA. Notre seconde contribution se nomme «Mind-Window» et étend les possibilités du Mind-Mirror en permettant plusieurs points de vue sur un même enregistrement d’activité cérébrale en utilisant des tablettes. Notre dernière contribution se nomme «Mind-Inside» et permet aux utilisateurs de visualiser en RV leur activité cérébrale en temps réel tout en étant immergés dans un cerveau virtuel. Enfin, nous avons étudié comment les ICOs et la RV/RA peuvent être appliquées au domaine des vêtements intelligents. Nous avons mis en place une plateforme d’expérimentation consistant en une cabine d’essayage virtuelle intégrant une ICO et permettant aux utilisateurs de porter des vêtements intelligents virtuels en RA. Poursuivant ces travaux, nous avons également conçu une «cape d’invisibilité» inspirée par l’univers de Harry Potter. Cette cape virtuelle permet aux utilisateurs de se camoufler en RA en utilisant leur état mental. Une étude utilisateur sur le contrôle de l’effet a mis en avant l’amélioration de l’expérience utilisateur et «l’impression d’avoir un superpouvoir» The objective of this PhD thesis is to study the use of Brain- Computer Interfaces (BCIs) within Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Our goal is to evaluate the compatibility between systems based on a BCI and VR/AR, to design new tools for the visualization of the brain activity based on VR/AR, and finally to propose new uses for the BCIs, and especially in combination with smart clothes. In order to fulfil these objectives, we have first designed and performed a feasibility study concerning the combination of a BCI and VR. Our objective was to study the influence of motor activity on a BCI. We have designed a system similar to a video game, serving as a base for a user study showing that this BCI can be successfully used, even when participants are performing a demanding muscular activity. We have also proposed three visualization tools for the brain activity based on VR/AR. Our first system called the «Mind- Mirror» which enables the visualization of our own brain activity «inside our own head» by superimposition. A user study has shown that no significant drop in BCI performance occurred, even with the additional complexity due to our AR-based display. Our second contribution is called «Mind- Window» and extends the Mind-Mirror’s possibilities by enabling one or multiple users to visualize the brain activity of another person as if her skull was transparent. Our last contribution is called «Mind-Inside» and allows users to visualize their brain activity in real-time while being immersed in a virtual brain. Finally, we have studied how BCIs and the VR/AR can be applied to smart clothes. We have designed an experimental platform comprising a dressing room integrating a BCI. Following this work, we proposed an «invisibility cloak» inspired by the Harry Potter universe. This virtual cloak allows users to camouflage themselves in AR using their mental state. Results from a preliminary study based on a simple videogame inspired by the Harry Potter universe could notably show that, compared to a standard control made with a keyboard, controlling the optical camouflage directly with the BCI could enhance the user experience and the feeling of «having a super-power»

Cependant, et s’écartant en cela quelque peu des tendances qui paraissent dominer ce courant de recherche, l’idée est de pointer autant que possible l’attention sur le ‘faire’ des connaissances. S’appuyant pour l’essentiel sur des entretiens passés auprès de journalistes et de chercheurs et dont l’objet était d’interroger leurs modalités d’entendement du réel, la thèse tente ainsi de penser ce que l’on pourrait apparenter à des « pratiques conceptuelles ». Faire directement usage de nos mains pour explorer des environnements virtuels et interagir avec leur contenu permet une interaction à la fois naturelle et convaincante. Dans ce manuscrit de thèse, nous visons à améliorer l’interaction avec les mains dans le contexte de la Réalité Virtuelle en abordant deux défis majeurs : (1) faciliter le contrôle de modèles de mains articulées et (2) fournir des sensations haptiques au travers d’interfaces accessibles. Nous abordons tout d’abord l’interaction au travers de mains virtuelles articulées et proposons deux méthodes pour faciliter leur contrôle. Premièrement, nous réduisons leurs nombreux degrés de liberté de façon à pouvoir exploiter des interfaces tactiles courantes. Le système qui en résulte permet aux utilisateurs de contrôler une main virtuelle en réalisant des gestes sur la surface de la tablette. Ensuite, nous adoptons une autre approche et séparons les degrés de liberté des mains virtuelles entre deux interfaces haptiques contrôlées en parallèle. Par cette distribution des contrôles et des retours de force, les utilisateurs sont exposés à des effets haptiques variés, autrement réservés à des interfaces haptiques coûteuses. Nous abordons ensuite le sujet du retour haptique pour différents types d’interaction avec les mains. Pour cela, nous combinons des retours passifs à des retours pseudo-haptiques en tant qu’alternative à l’usage d’interfaces actives complexes et encombrantes. Dans un premier temps, nous considérons l’interaction avec les bras et proposons une armature élastique attachés à l’utilisateur qui fournit un retour de force égocentrique tout en conservant sa mobilité. Nous abordons ensuite le sujet de la saisie d’objets virtuels et proposons un nouveau paradigme d’interaction basé sur une interface élastique qui reproduit les mouvements de préhension et fournit un retour adapté et modulable par un effet pseudo-haptique. Finalement, nous considérons la manipulation fine avec les doigts et proposons un exosquelette passif qui les contraint séparément, associé à un retour pseudo-haptique multi-doigt simulant l’interaction avec des matériaux hétérogènes Directly using our hands to explore virtual environments and interact with their contents produces a natural and compelling interaction. In this thesis, we propose contributions to improve hand-based interaction in the context of Virtual Reality by considering two main challenges: (1) improving the control of articulated hand models, and (2) providing haptic sensations with accessible techniques. We first address the challenge of interacting through realistic, articulated virtual hands and propose two methods for easing their control. As a first step, we reduce the degrees of freedom of complex hand models in order to make multi-finger interaction possible with common multi-touch interfaces. The resulting system allows users to control a virtual hand by performing gestures over a tactile tablet. Then, we take another approach and separate the degrees of freedom of one virtual hand between two haptic interfaces handled in parallel. Through this distribution of controls and feedback, users are exposed to a variety of haptic effects, otherwise restricted to complex haptic workstations. We then address the challenge of providing haptic sensations during hand-based interaction. To do so, we introduce different techniques that combine passive haptic feedback and pseudo-haptics as an alternative to complex and cumbersome active interfaces. We consider various types of interaction at different scales, starting with coarse interaction with the arm through an elastic armature that provides an egocentric and mobile haptic feedback. We then focus on object grasping and manipulation and propose an interaction paradigm that relies on elastic input devices for reproducing grasping gestures and perceiving modulable haptic properties through crossmodal feedback. Finally, we consider fine multi-finger manipulation and we propose a passive exoskeleton that constrains the digits individually, associated to a multi-finger pseudo-haptic feedback for simulating complex interaction with heterogeneous materials

La premiere partie du travail concerne une etude experimentale, par essais sur eprouvettes, de l'effet des bacs en tole mince nervuree mettant en evidence la diminution de resistance des connecteurs et la presence d'une branche de dechargement dans leur loi de comportement au cisaillement. Par ailleurs, des essais de poutre ont permis de montrer un comportement nettement plus favorable des connecteurs en place dans la structure. La deuxieme partie concerne l'adaptation d'un modele numerique existant et une etude parametrique a l'aide de ce modele afin d'optimiser le dimensionnement des poutres de plancher mixte pour les faibles degres de connexion. A l'etat limite ultime, on demontre que l'on peut employer une methode classique de l'eurocode 4 jusqu'a des degres de l'ordre de 0,2 a condition d'adopter une definition convenable de la resistance des connecteurs. De meme, a l'etat limite de service, des formules simples ont pu etre etablies, en fonction du degre de connexion et de la portee, permettant une determination precise de la fleche et des contraintes, meme en connexion tres partielle. L'application de ces methodes a des cas tres concrets confirme que l'on peut obtenir des gains sur le poids des profiles metalliques allant de 15 a 25%

Le terme "avatar" fait référence à la représentation des utilisateurs dans un monde virtuel, dans le cas où ils portent un casque de réalité virtuelle et ne peuvent donc pas voir leur propre corps. Les avatars sont désormais devenus une exigence majeure dans les applications de réalité virtuelle immersive, ce qui accroît la nécessité de mieux comprendre et identifier les facteurs qui influencent le sentiment d'incarnation d'un utilisateur envers son avatar. Dans cette thèse, nous avons défini trois axes de recherche pour explorer l'influence de plusieurs facteurs sur le sentiment d'incarnation, en nous basant sur une catégorisation qui ne prend pas seulement en compte les facteurs liés à l'avatar, mais aussi les facteurs liés à l'environnement virtuel et à l'utilisateur. En premier lieu, nous avons étudié l'influence des environnements virtuels partagés sur le sentiment d'incarnation, dans une étude où les utilisateurs accomplissaient une tâche ensemble dans le même environnement virtuel, et dans une autre étude où les utilisateurs partageaient le contrôle du même avatar. Dans une deuxième partie, nous avons exploré les interrelations entre les facteurs liés aux avatars qui influencent le sentiment d'incarnation. Enfin, dans une troisième partie, nous avons étudié l'influence des différences individuelles des utilisateurs sur le sentiment d'incarnation The term "avatar" refers to the representation of users in a virtual world, in the case where they are immersed in Virtual Reality with a Head-Mounted Display and therefore cannot see their own body. Avatars have now become a major requirement in immersive virtual reality applications, increasing the need to better understand and identify the factors that influence users’ sense of embodiment towards their avatar. In this thesis, we defined three axes of research to explore the influence of several factors on the sense of embodiment, based on a categorization that did not only consider factors related to the avatar, but also factors related to the virtual environment and the user. In the first part, we have studied the influence of shared virtual environments on the sense of embodiment, in a study where users performed a task together in the same virtual environment, and in another experiment in which users even shared the control of the same avatar. In a second part, we explored interrelations within avatar-related factors influencing the sense of embodiment, using a new methodological approach with a subjective matching technique. Abstract:

Neuropsychotherapy is a new philosophy in the treatment of mental disorders that bases its principles in the application of the information we have about the brain activations and brain functioning to adjust the therapy to them, in order to center the process in how the brain evolves to its normal activations. New tools in the field of neuroimaging have helped in this process, providing accurate and detailed information about how the particular brain of each patient works. Between the many neuroimaging techniques available nowadays, the functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) stands out by its high spatial resolution, which allows a better knowledge of which brain area is activated before each stimulus or while performing each activity. The disadvantages this technique presents in terms of size of the scanner and restriction of movements give light to another technique, more suitable in certain domains: the electroencephalography (EEG), which provides a greater freedom of movement and higher temporal resolution. For the purposes of this PhD Thesis, both techniques will be compared, in order to find which one better suits our interests. For doing so, another factor will be taken into account. Due to the limitations the neuroimaging techniques have in terms of presentation of the stimuli, we are not able to expose the subject to certain kinds of real life situations. There is where the virtual reality (VR) enters the scene. With VR we are able to move the subject to a virtual world where any kind of stimulus is possible. In the case of neuropsychotherapy, it will allow the exposition of the patient to a situation related to his disorder, in a safer and more controlled environment. In fact, virtual reality has been widely used for the treatment of psychological disorders; but, until now, it has not been applied during the assessment of the disease. For the aims of this Thesis, virtual environments will be used for the assessment of subjects before and after undergoing a psychological treatment for a specific disorder, using neuroimaging techniques to find useful information that could help during the therapeutic process. As an example of disorder, the phobia to small animals (spiders and cockroaches) has been chosen, although the conclusions of this study could be extended to other kinds of psychological disorders. Before being able to assure that the brain activations obtained are related to the disorder and not to other issues, it is needed to measure the sense of presence the subjects felt during the virtual experience. This is why before the assessment of a psychological disorder, a study of the sense of presence in a virtual environment was introduced. This study also helped in the decision of which neuroimaging technique apply in the second part of the Thesis. EEG and fMRI were used for the measure of presence in the same virtual environments, and the results in terms of brain activations were compared. Presence was also measured by means of questionnaires, the traditional subjective way of measuring it. As a result of this study it is expected to check if VR could effectively stimulate presence and which neuroimaging technique is more appropriate for the targets of this Thesis. To sum up, the initial hypotheses of this Thesis are that: 1- The new neuroimaging techniques can provide of useful information to use during neuropsychotherapy. 2- Virtual reality would help in the assessment of the disorder, improving the accuracy in the way the subjects are exposed to the stimuli. 3- The environments used would be immersive enough so the patient will feel present in them and feel them as real. For fulfilling these objectives, each of the two courses of work (study of presence and assessment of a mental disorder) was divided in two parts. In total, four studies were developed: 1- Study of the sense of presence in a virtual environment using fMRI: the aim of this part of the Thesis was to check if the environments were able to stimulate the sense of presence, correlating the results with those given to questionnaires. 2- Study of the sense of presence in a virtual environment using EEG: the aim here was to compare the brain activations obtained with EEG with those from the previous study, and if the responses of the questionnaires were equivalent despite being in a less intrusive scanner. As a result of these two studies, it was decided that the environments were immersive enough to induce the sense of presence, and that the best neuroimaging technique for the next part of the Thesis was the fMRI, due to the higher spatial resolution it brought. 3- Assessment of a psychological disorder, pre-treatment: once decided the study will continue with fMRI, the areas related to a specific disorder (small animals¿ phobia) were studied using VR as stimulus. Until now, the assessment has been done using real animals as stimuli but not using VR, which here is hypothesized to allow a better approach to the phobic experience than the view of photographs or videos of real animals. 4- Assessment of the state of subjects with a psychological disorder, post-treatment: once the patients had underwent a treatment to cure the disorder, they were assessed again to check if the brain areas related to the phobia stopped being activated after it. As a result of this second part of the Thesis, the brain areas related to the phobia (that stopped being activated after the treatment) were obtained, and this information is hoped to be useful in future neuropsychotherapeutic works, for the better adjustment of the disorder. Abstract:

This research seeks to connect the philosophical focus of the agency-structure debate with the practice of management through a comparative study of organisational decision-making in situations involving stakeholder consultation. Set in the context of decision-making following an airport master plan consultation, the study considers how the stakeholder framework can be integrated within institutional theory using institutional logics as a theoretical link between these two literatures. This thesis, which adopts a critical realist perspective, takes a comparative case approach of four airports, each owned in different ways. Interviews with airport managers are supplemented by discussions with stakeholders and industry experts. Two sets of a priori themes were identified from the literature. The first focuses on the institutional logics prevailing in the field and their influence on managers as they make decisions. The second considers four decision-making strategies managers might employ in this situation. Findings centre on the causal powers acting upon airport managers as they make their decisions. Whilst normative isomorphic pressure enables stakeholder consultation, the coercive pressure on the decision-making process deriving from English planning law, the adversarial and oscillating nature of Central Government policy, and a mimetic response to the nature of local authority development plans constrain the actions of airport managers. Indeed, the current bureaucratic form of capitalism limits stakeholder contribution to final master plans. This research makes four main contributions: Firstly, reflecting upon the agency-structure debate from a critical realist perspective has facilitated development of a model integrating the stakeholder framework within institutional theory. Secondly, it improves our understanding of how stakeholder contribution is managed in master planning. Thirdly, the study adds to the growing body of work that employs a critical realist perspective. Lastly, since reconciling conflicting stakeholder opinions may well be of vital importance to the future of the UK’s airport infrastructure, this work has practical significance for airport managers, government policy-makers and stakeholders as they strive to formulate worthwhile airport consultations.

L'haptique joue un rôle majeur dans l'interaction avec des environnements virtuels, avec de nombreuses applications en entraînement virtuel, en prototypage et en assistance de téléopérations. En particulier, les objets déformables représentent un défi pour la simulation à cause de leur comportement intrinsèquement complexe. À cause des besoins particuliers en terme de puissance liés à l'interaction haptique, il est en général nécessaire de faire un compromis entre efficacité et précision, et tirer le meilleur parti de ce compromis reste un défi majeur. Les objectifs de ce doctorat sont premièrement d'améliorer l'interaction haptique avec des objets virtuels déformables au comportement complexe, et enfin d'étudier en quoi la perception peut nous aider dans cette tâche.Dans cette thèse, nous proposons dans un premier temps un modèle pour la simulation physique d'objets hétérogènes déformables. Plus précisément, nous nous intéressons au problème de la multirésolution géométrique pour les objets hétérogènes, en nous concentrant sur la représentation de l'hétérogénéité à basse résolution des objets simulés. La contribution consiste en une méthode d'attribution de l'élasticité pour la basse résolution de l'objet, et une évaluation de ce changement de géométrie sur la perception haptique.Nous nous intéressons ensuite à une autre classe de comportements complexes, les changements topologiques, en proposant un pipeline de simulation pour la déchirure haptique bimanuelle d'objets déformables fins. Cette contribution se concentre sur deux aspects essentiels à la simulation efficace de déchirure, à savoir la détection de collision pour les objets surfaciques, et la simulation physique efficace de déchirure. La simulation est particulièrement optimisée pour la propagation de déchirure.Le dernier aspect couvert dans cette thèse est l'influence de l'environnement sur la perception haptique de raideur, et plus particulièrement les environnements de Réalité Augmentée (RA). Comment perçoit-on les objets en RA par rapport à la Réalité Virtuelle (RV)? Est-ce que nous interagissons de la même manière dans ces deux environnements? Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons mené une expérience pour comparer la perception haptique de raideur d'un piston virtuel entouré dans un premier cas d'objets de la vie quotidienne en RA, et du même piston entouré par une reproduction virtuelle de cet environnement réel en RV.Ces contributions ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives pour l'interaction haptique avec des environnements virtuels, depuis la simulation efficace et fidèle d'objets déformables au comportement complexe à une meilleure compréhension de la perception haptique et des stratégies d'interaction Haptics is a key part for the interaction with physically-based environments, with many applications in virtual training, prototyping and teleoperations assistance. In particular, deformable objects are challenging, due to the complexity oftheir behavior. Due to the specific need in performance associated to haptic interaction, a trade-off is usually necessarybetween accuracy and efficiency, and taking the best of this trade-off is a major challenge. The objectives of this PhD are to improve haptic rendering with physically-based deformable objects that exhibit complex behavior, and study how perception can be used to achieve this goal.In this PhD, we first propose a model for the physically-based simulation of complex heterogeneous deformable objects. More specifically, we address the issue of geometric multiresolution for deformable heterogeneous objects, with a major focus on the heterogeneity representation at the coarse resolution of the simulated objects. The contribution consists in a method for elasticity attribution at coarser resolution of the object, and an evaluation of the geometric coarsening on the haptic perception.We then focus on another class of complex objects behavior, topology changes, by proposing a simulation pipeline forbimanual haptic tearing of thin deformable surfaces. This contribution mainly focuses on two main aspects for an efficientsimulation of tearing, namely collision detection for thin objects and efficient physically-based simulation of tearing phenomena. The simulation is especially optimized for tear propagation.The last aspect that is covered by this PhD is the influence of the environment over haptic perception of stiffness, and more specifically of Augmented Reality (AR) environments. How are objects perceived in AR compared to Virtual Reality (VR)? Do we interact the same way on these two environments? In order to assess these questions, we conducted an experiment aiming at comparing the haptic stiffness perception of a piston surrounded by everyday life objects in AR and of the same piston surrounded by a virtual replica of the real environment in VR.These contributions open new perspectives for haptic interaction with virtual environments, from the efficient yet faithful simulation of complex deformable objects behavior to a better understanding of haptic perception and interaction strategies

Cette étude interroge l’ouverture du droit savant américain aux méthodes et techniques des sciences sociales (économie, science politique, sociologie, etc.). Cette recherche s’intéresse, plus précisément, à l’institutionnalisation du phénomène d’ouverture et démontre que sa pérennisation s’opère en trois temps : par la légitimation, l’enracinement et la diffusion des sciences sociales en droit. À travers l’étude du phénomène d’ouverture, c’est la structure particulière du droit savant américain que cette thèse révèle. Abstract:

De nos jours, les images augmentées font partie du quotidien. Du cinéma aux jeux vidéo en passant par l'architecture ou le design, nombreuses sont les applications qui ont besoin d'afficher des objets synthétiques dans un contexte réel. Cependant, le processus permettant d'intégrer ces objets de manière cohérente dans leur environnement peut rapidement devenir très difficile à mettre en œuvre. Lorsque l'environnement à augmenter est de grande taille ou présente une géométrie ou un éclairage complexe, sa modélisation devient alors fastidieuse et l'utilisation de ces modèles dans le rendu d'images augmentées réalistes est très coûteuse en ressources. D'un autre côté, des applications telles que la réalité augmentée ont besoin de méthodes de rendu efficaces pour fonctionner en temps réel. Elles doivent, par ailleurs, pouvoir s'adapter automatiquement à des environnements a priori inconnus avec pour seule source d'informations les images acquises progressivement dans ces derniers. Dans cette thèse, nous nous sommes appuyés sur les méthodes développées en vision par ordinateur, en modélisation à partir d'images et en synthèse d'images pour proposer une approche globale au problème d'augmentation cohérente d'environnements complexes et progressivement découverts. Nous y développons de nouvelles méthodes d'acquisition permettant d'obtenir des images RGB+Z avec une grande dynamique et localisées dans l'environnement. Nous présentons ensuite comment exploiter cette source d'information pour construire incrémentalement des représentations de la géométrie et de l'éclairement de la scène à augmenter. Enfin, nous apportons de nouvelles approches de rendu adaptées à ces modélisations et permettant une génération rapide d'images augmentées où l'éclairement des objets synthétiques reste cohérent avec celui de l'environnement Today, augmented images are parts of our daily life. From movie industry to video games through architecture and object design, many applications need to display synthetic objects into a real context. However, coherently integrating objects in their environment may be a difficult task. When the environment is vast or includes complex geometry or lighting, its modelling is tedious and using its model to render augmented images is resource-consuming. Moreover, applications like augmented reality need efficient real-time rendering. They also have to automatically adapt to unmodelled environments, while progressively acquiring data from incoming images. In this thesis, we based our work on computer vision, image-based modelling and rendering methods to propose a global approach to the problem of progressively discovered and complex environment coherent augmentation. We first develop new acquisition methods to get high dynamic range RGB+Z registered images of the environment. Then we explain how to use these informations to incrementally build models of scene geometry and lighting. Finally, we provide new rendering approaches using these models and suitable for an efficient and photometrically coherent image augmentation

Les interfaces à retour d'effort sont des systèmes robotisés permettant d'interagir gestuellement de façon naturelle avec des environnements virtuels ou distants. Ces dispositifs sont utilisés dans différents contextes tels que la téléopération (e.g. nucléaire, sous-marine, spatiale), le manufacturing, les jeux vidéo, l'éducation, la médecine ou la rééducation, pour ne citer que quelques exemples. Pour les applications en réalité virtuelle, les utilisateurs manipulent généralement ces interfaces à l'aide d'une poignée qui est reliée mécaniquement au robot. Ce lien a une influence importante puisqu'il conduit l'utilisateur à ressentir la présence du robot même en espace libre (frottements, vibrations, inertie de la structure mécanique du robot), ce qui réduit le réalisme de l'interaction. Les interfaces à contacts intermittents (CI) constituent une alternative prometteuse pour essayer de surmonter ces inconvénients. Elles proposent de suivre les mouvements de l'utilisateur à faible distance en espace libre et de ne venir à son contact que lorsque l'on veut appliquer un retour d'effort. Elles visent de cette façon à améliorer le réalisme des interactions. They are employed in several domains such as remote handling (e.g. nuclear, subsea, space), manufacturing, entertainment, education, medicine and rehabilitation, just to mention the most popular. In virtual reality (VR) applications, the user typically holds a handle that is mechanically linked to the end-effector of the robot. This link has a non-negligible influence since the presence of the robot can be felt (friction, inertia and vibrations of the mechanical structure) even in free space, decreasing the realism of the interaction. Intermittent-contact haptic interfaces (IC-HIs) represent a promising approach to cope with this issue. These interfaces track and closely follow (without contact) the user movements in free space and come to his/her contact only when force feedback is required. Abstract:

Personal and Social Development (PSD) is a statutory subject in Maltese schools. Whilst PSD does not exist as a subject in Maltese higher education, PSD practice is present within the academic content as well as the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Its’ claimed purpose is to support the students’ personal and social development. This study explores stakeholder perceptions of PSD practice in Malta, the way in which it is included within the University of Malta (UoM) undergraduate experience and its contribution to the holistic development of undergraduates. Findings indicate that a number of factors impact upon the need, and resulting provision of PSD practice in Malta. These include: smallness of the Maltese Islands; their lack of natural resources and Malta’s reliance on human capabilities. While these factors may generate the need for PSD practice in Malta, other factors, like the traditional academic oriented system and the sense of fear for change, tend to hinder its provision. On the other hand, PSD practice in Malta is facilitated through policies which promote it; the compulsory PSD subject in schools and the different opportunities for PSD practice. In general, UoM students from the Science and Social Sciences faculty clusters, those attending the Degree Plus programme and those participating in extra-curricular groups, ranked highly the provision of generic competences training, the emphasis on their active role and the holistic aims. The thesis suggests that PSD practice at the UoM is not consistent across faculties, but whenever there was PSD practice, students appeared to value it and recognise its contribution to their holistic development. Such link is hindered by factors like the traditional pre-tertiary education, the influence of the European Union with the economic agenda and a neo-liberal, globalized and capitalist society that glorifies competition, performativity and market demands. In conclusion, it is recommended that there is genuine movement towards PSD practice for holistic aims.

La construction sociale de la realite est un processus communicationnel, qui implique une succession de la decision interdependante entre les acteurs sociaux. Les medias de flux, notamment la television, s'impliquent dans le processus de la construction de la realite dans la vie quotidienne, non seulement en tant que fournisseurs des nouvelles exterieures mais aussi comme organisateurs de la vie quotidienne. Ils interviennent d'une facon particuliere dans la construction du temps (qotidien et social) et de l'espace (domestique). L'information joue un role ponderant dans l'infitration du temps televisuel a l'espace domestique. Avec l'augmentation du temps de diffusion et la creation des chaines d'information, la polychronie domestique envahie par la monochronie televisuelle et informationnelle. La structure de brooedcasting accomplit l'exercice du pouvoir centralisant, en construisant l'espace national et en organisant domestique comme lieu de l'autosurveillance a travers le mecanisme de l'interdependance sociale. Le systeme d'information se definit comme regime d'actualite (mise en acte des faits au present), qui exerce des forces illocutoires particulieres et fonctionne comme un systeme autoreferentiel en tant qu'une institution et vis-a-vis de la societe a travers la mediation des statistiques sociales (sondage d'opinion, les informations boursieres et routieres). Le regime d'actualite s'est developpe a travers les trois etapes (la presse-distribution, la telediffision, la connexion) en tant quen formation sociale et historique de la construction de la realite des medias dans la vie quotidienne. Chaque formation resulte de differente logique de la gestion sociale du temps et de l'espace. Elles ne succedent pas l'une apres l'autre, mais elles s'articulent les unes avec les autres Interdependent decisions between social actors. News system is defined as actuality regime (actulisation of the facts in present), exercises particular illocutionary forces and operates like an auto-referential system. It also plays his part in social auto-referential process through the mediation of the social statistics (opinon poils, audience measure, stock exchange information, highway information). The actuality regime has developed through three stages (press-distribution; broadcasting connexion) as a social et historical formation of media reality construction in everyday life. Usually the difficulties arise due to lack of appropriate coordination, poor definition of the context in which the activities are to be performed individually or in group; thus, generating redundancies, inconsistencies and contradictions within the workgroup. In order to overcome these problems, a new field of research, called Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), was created to seek means of properly supporting work groups. Despite the favorable results achieved by CSCW, thus far, tools that provide a high level of interaction among the group members and the leaders of sub-groups are still not satisfactory. The use of virtual reality within cooperative systems allows the interactions among participants to be highly spontaneous, because, in virtual environments, communication by means of image, text and audio is possible. The Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs), which employ shared virtual reality technology, have proved to possess great potential for collaborative work. Therefore, collaborative virtual environments have been developed taking into consideration the results obtained by CSCW research. Nonetheless, developing CVEs is complicated, since they demand a great deal of resources, and need to incorporate concepts and recommendations from several research fields, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Computer Supported Cooperative Work and l Distributed Computing. The main objective of this dissertation is to design a generic architecture (CRAbCVE) for allowing distribution of several collaborative virtual environments within a network of servers on the Internet. This architecture defines specialized components, capable of distributing the processing that takes place in the CVE, thus obtaining a great computational power at low costs. Another important objective is the specification of a Model of Authorship in CVEs (MAC) for helping to integrate the CRAbCVE architecture into the framework of collaborative work. All models proposed herein have been incorporated into a prototype system and a simple case study has been analyzed. A complexidade das tarefas do mundo atual requer cada vez mais a cooperação das pessoas para sua execução. Entretanto cooperar não é uma tarefa fácil, e, muitas vezes, por falta de coordenação adequada ou por uma definição pobre do contexto em que as atividades dos participantes individualmente ou do grupo serão realizadas, são geradas redundâncias, inconsistências e contradições dentro do trabalho em grupo. Para evitar esses problemas, a área de CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) vem buscando meios de suportar adequadamente o trabalho em equipe. Apesar dos bons resultados alcançados pela área de CSCW, o principal obstáculo enfrentado pelos seus desenvolvedores é fornecer interatividade a suas aplicações. O uso de realidade virtual em sistemas cooperativos permite aos participantes interagirem com o mais alto grau de naturalidade, pois através do ambiente virtual é possível a comunicação por meio de imagem, texto e áudio. Os CVEs (Collaborative Virtual Environments) fazem uso da tecnologia de realidade virtual distribuída e apresentam grande potencial para o suporte ao trabalho colaborativo. Por conseguinte, esses ambientes virtuais colaborativos têm sido desenvolvidos, levando em consideração os resultados obtidos na área de CSCW. Entretanto, desenvolver CVEs é uma tarefa complicada, pois eles são grandes consumidores de recursos, e precisam incorporar conceitos e recomendações de várias áreas de pesquisa, como a de Realidade Virtual (RV), a de Trabalho Colaborativo Assistido por Computador (CSCW) e a de Sistemas Computacionais Distribuídos. La réalité virtuelle (RV) est de plus en plus utilisée dans des simulations industrielles mais la possibilité de toucher les objets manque rapidement par exemple pour juger de la qualité perçue dans la conception de véhicule automobile. Les interfaces haptiques actuels ne permettent de restituer aisément la notion de texture, l’approche envisagée est donc une interface à contact intermittent. Un cobot vient positionner une surface mobile à l’endroit du contact avec un objet virtuel pour permettre un contact physique avec la main de l’opérateur.Les contributions de cette thèse portent sur plusieurs aspects : le placement du robot, la modélisation de l’opérateur, la gestion du déplacement et de la vitesse du robot et la détection des intentions de l’opérateur. Le placement du robot est choisi pourpermettre d’atteindre les différentes zones de travail et pour assurer une sécurité passive en rendant impossible au robot de heurter la têteet le buste de l’opérateur en position normale de travail, i.e. assis dans un fauteuil. Un modèle de l'utilisateur, incluant un torse et desbras, est conçu et testé pour suivre les mouvements de l'utilisateur en temps réel. L’interaction est possible sur un ensemble de pose prédéfinies que l’utilisateur enchaine comme il le désire. Différentes stratégies sont proposées pour prédire les intentions de l'utilisateur. Les aspects clés de la prédiction sont basés sur la direction du regard et la position de la main de l'utilisateur. Une étudeexpérimentale ainsi que l'analyse qui en découle montrent l’apport de la prise en compte de la direction du regard. L’intérêt d’introduire des points dit « de sécurité » pour éloigner le robot de l’opérateur et permettre des déplacements rapides du robot est mis en évidence Virtual reality (VR) is evolving and being used in industrial simulations but the possibility to touch objects is missing, for example to judge the perceived quality in the design of a car. The current haptic interfaces do not allow to easily restore the notion of texture, therefore an approach is considered “intermittent contact interface” to achieve this. A cobot positions a mobile surface at the point of contact with a virtual object to allow physical contact with the operator's hand. The contributions of this thesis concern several aspects: the placement of the robot, the modeling of the operator, the management of the displacement and the speed of the robot and the detection of the operator's intentions. The placement of the robot is chosen to allow reaching the different working areas and to ensure passive safety by making it impossible for the robot to hit the head and chest of the operator in a normal working position, i.e. sitting in a chair. A model of the user, including a torso and arms, is designed and tested to follow the user's movements in real time Interaction is possible on a set of predefined poses that the user chains together as desired. Different strategies are proposed to predict the user's intentions. The key aspects of the prediction are based on the gaze direction and the hand position of the user. An experimental study as well as the resulting analysis show the contribution of taking into account the gaze direction. The interest of introducing "safety" points to move the robot away from the operator and allow fast robot movements is highlighted

Abstract:

This research explores some of the factors which might impact on promoting the inclusion of pupils on the autism spectrum in secondary schools. The experience of inclusion for these pupils is often described as problematic, and that the general ‘top down’ information led approaches offered to schools to support their inclusion of this group of pupils seems to be problematic, failing to acknowledge the individuality of their pupils, staff, and the uniqueness of their contexts. This study utilises a practitioner action research framework in order to explore the experiences and theories about inclusion of staff and pupils on the autism spectrum within a secondary school. This research aimed to ‘grow’ inclusion within this context and reflect on the key process elements which supported any changes to occur. The main findings of the study suggested that it is possible to ‘grow’ inclusive practice and that a number of process elements were necessary to this growth. The significant process elements which emerged were; co-constructing practice and experience local to the community, explicit activity with reference to the process of change and development, and professional expertise relating to autism, the process of change and evaluation. Based on the findings of the study a model for future practice is proposed and discussed which combines learning from research in the areas of; autism and inclusion, school effectiveness, solution oriented and motivational psychology, and theory based approaches to evaluation. The model developed suggests that in order to grow inclusive practice, including for those on the autism spectrum, we need to move away from a simplistic standards/competency based approach. Instead what is suggested is that inclusion in practice should: have regard to and be constructed by those within a community, requires a process which has regard to both the goals and motivations of individual members of staff and of the broader organisational and social context, and that this requires professional expertise and facilitation. Discussion as to the implications of the findings of this study in terms of the role of an educational psychologist in this process and the value of practitioner action research in generating evidence on which to base future practice is also undertaken.

Les transistors a effet champ a contact metal-semiconducteur, non passives, realises sur arseniure de gallium sont sujet a une degradation progressive de leurs performances statiques et dynamiques aux hyperfrequences. Ce defaut de fonctionnement est en parti attribue aux surfaces d'arseniure de gallium situees de part et d'autres de la grille. La stabilisation des composants requiert donc de la passivation de ces zones grace a des materiaux de haute qualite dielectrique realisant une interface stable avec gaas. Dans cette optique, les proprietes physico-chimiques et electriques de films de silice et de nitrure de silicium deposes en phase vapeur assiste par plasma sont etudiees en fonction du rapport des debits des gaz employe, de la temperature du substrat, de la puissance et de la frequence de l'excitation du plasma. . . Cette approche systematique permet de determiner des parametres de depot qui donnent des films ayant tres bonnes proprietes electriques: une resistivite de 10**(14) a 10**(16) ohm. Cm et un champ de claquage superieur a 10**(6) v/cm sont ainsi obtenus apres un recuit dont on soulignera l'importance. Apres mise au point d'une preparation de surface avant depot, la densite d'etats sur la bande interdite du semiconducteur a l'interface gaas/si::(3)n::(4) presente un minimum de 7. 10**(11) ev**(-2). Les depots ainsi optimalises sont utilises pour la passivation des transistors mesfet gaas. Le recouvrement d'un composant par une couche mince introduit une modification de ses caracteristiques statiques; celle-ci est expliquee conjointement par un effet piezo-electrique et par un effet de surface inherent au mode de depot. Suivant les resultats obtenus en tests de fiabilite, le nitrure de silicium s'avere etre le meilleur choix pour reussir la passivation du composant. De plus, des pretraitements par plasma et une meilleure adaptation du procede de fabrication au mode de passivation sont proposes pour ameliorer encore la stabilite a long terme des caracteristiques des transistors

La Théorie de la Relativité (TRR), est une théorie particulièrement contre-intuitive dont les implications sont inaccessibles à l'expérience sensible humaine ; ce qui pose un certain nombre de difficultés de compréhension aux étudiants. Cependant, la Réalité Virtuelle (RV) offre une approche intéressante en permettant à un utilisateur d'être immergé et d'interagir dans un monde virtuel où la vitesse de la lumière est ramenée à 1 m/s. Les phénomènes relativistes deviennent ainsi directement accessibles par ses sens. Cette caractéristique, point départ de nos travaux, permet alors d’appréhender les phénomènes relativistes par une expérience « par la pratique ». L'enjeu de notre travail porte plus précisément sur la définition de moyens et de méthodes intégrés dans une plate-forme immersive permettant d'appréhender les phénomènes relativistes. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons, tout d’abord, des méthodes novatrices pour simuler les phénomènes relativistes sur un nombre quelconque d'objets en mouvement arbitraire et tenant compte de la dynamique relativiste des objets dans la scène, notamment durant leurs interactions. Nous nous focalisons sur les effets qui déforment les objets vus par l'observateur, à savoir le délai de propagation des photons, la relativité des longueurs et l'effet d'aberration. Nous définissons ensuite des méthodes pour intégrer une simulation relativiste dans un environnement immersif basé intrinsèquement sur un monde newtonien. Nous proposons également une plate-forme expérimentale dans laquelle sont intégrées des méthodes d'interaction utilisées pour mettre en scène un « jeu sérieux », ici un billard relativiste. Enfin, nous démontrons la portée de notre outil expérimental par deux voies : l'une concerne l'utilisation de l'application dans des évaluations de didactique et l'autre concerne un exemple d'extension de l'outil pour mettre en lumière un autre aspect de la Physique relativiste : la relation entre vitesse et énergie The Theory of Special Relativity (TSR) is a particularly counterintuitive theory. Its implications are, by nature, out of reach by human experience. Therefore we cannot perceive its effects directly, thus raising problems of comprehension for the students confronted to it. However, Virtual Reality (VR) enables us to overcome this limitation by immersing a user into a world where the velocity of light is reduced to 1 m/s. As a result, the relativistic phenomena become directly perceivable through our senses. This possibility, which is the cornerstone of our work, brings a unique way to apprehend the relativistic phenomenon trough a "hands-on" experiment.In this context, we propose, first, innovative methods to include relativistic effects in simulation containing any number of objects moving in an arbitrary direction and velocity and taking into account the relativistic dynamics of the objects, including object-to-object interaction. We focused on the relativistic phenomenon involved in the deformation of objects: the delay of propagation of the photons from the light source to the observer, as well as the relativity of length and the aberration of light. We describe, second, methods to integrate the simulation techniques, previously introduced, into an immersive environment intrinsically based on Newtonian physics. We also provide interaction methods and a concrete application in a serious game framework: a relativistic carom billiard. Finally, we demonstrate the possibilities of our platform are demonstrated in two ways: one tackles usage in the context of learning evaluation and the other is an extension of the tool to access new pieces of information relevant to TSR, such as the force profile used to launch an object with a relativistic velocity

Si la coopération sino-africaine dans le sillage des indépendances nationales des années soixante a trouvé son ferment dans l’idéologie révolutionnaire et l’esprit de Bandung, il n’en est point question de la nouvelle phase qui s’ouvre à l’aube du XXIème siècle. En effet, les mutations internationales intervenues dans la charnière des deux siècles, le renouvellement des acteurs des deux côtés et les réalités endogènes propres à chaque partie, ont accéléré l’entrée dans une nouvelle ère où l’économie devient la pierre angulaire de la coopération. La naissance du FOCAC traduit la volonté de mieux coordonner les relations entre la Chine et l’Afrique, en même temps qu’elle donne la mesure de l’intensité et du volume de leurs échanges. Quelle est donc cette institution qui regroupe autant d’Etats ? Quels sont ses fondements théoriques? Et quelle réponse apporte-elle aux nombreux contempteurs de la présence chinoise en Afrique ? Telles sont les principales articulations de ce travail Whereas the China-Africa cooperation under the tough era of decolonization in 1960’s was strongly fostered by shared revolutionary ideology and Bandung spirit, that is not the case in the new phase in the early 21st century. La navigation à la première personne en Environnement Virtuel (EV) est essentielle à beaucoup d'applications de Réalité Virtuelle (RV), comme les simulations d'entraînement ou les visites virtuelles de musées ou de projets architecturaux. Les techniques de navigation doivent fournir un moyen efficace et écologique d'explorer les EV. De plus, comme dans toute autre application de RV, l'immersion des utilisateurs est aussi primordiale pour obtenir une bonne simulation. Dans cette thèse, nous avons proposé des nouvelles techniques d'interaction 3D et de retour sensoriel pour améliorer la navigation. Ainsi, nos contributions peuvent être découpées en deux parties : (1) une nouvelle technique d'interaction pour une navigation efficace et écologique en RV et (2) de nouvelles techniques de retour sensoriel conçues pour améliorer l'immersion et la sensation de marche des utilisateurs durant la navigation. Pour chacune des techniques proposées, nous avons conduit des évaluations poussées afin de valider que nos techniques atteignent leurs objectifs. Dans la première partie, nous avons proposé une nouvelle technique de navigation pour la RV, le Shake-Your-Head (SYH). Cette technique suit les mouvements de la tête de l'utilisateur lorsqu'il marche sûr place devant son écran afin de produire une navigation simulant la marche, ainsi que les sauts ou ramper. Nous avons trouvé que notre technique peut être utilisée efficacement sur des trajectoires complexes et est simple d'apprentissage. De plus, cette technique a été très appréciée par les utilisateurs. Dans la seconde partie, nous avons proposé une technique, les King Kong Effects (KKE), pour simuler les informations visuelles et vibrotactiles produites à chaque pas. Nous avons également proposé de nouveaux Mouvements de Caméra (MC) améliorés pour simuler les mouvements de la têtes lors de la marche, de la course et du sprint. De plus, nos MC sont adaptés à l'âge, au genre, au poids et à la condition physique de l'humain virtuel, ainsi qu'à la pente dans l'EV. Les KKE améliorent la sensation de marcher dans l'EV et ont également été très appréciés des utilisateurs. De plus, nous avons montrés que les différents paramètres des MC sont correctement perçus par les utilisateurs.

L'optimisation des processus de conception est une activité de recherche en pleine évolution, soulignée dans de nombreuses références et pratiques des entreprises dans l'objectif l'amélioration et le développement de produits nouveaux. Notre démarche s'inscrit dans la continuité de ces activités qui prend comme point de départ la diversité des processus de conception existants et la difficulté de réaliser un choix où une adaptation. D'ou notre problématique est résumée autour d'une question centrale que nous formulons de la manière suivante : comment optimiser le choix d'un processus de conception soumis à un environnement contraint ? La réponse à cette question est à travers la proposition d'un outil d'aide au choix qui converge vers l'installation d'un processus de conception. Cet outil est tridimensionnel, où la première dimension vise la préparation de la phase amont de conception, la deuxième dimension sélectionne un processus de conception sur une carte de classement et l'objectif de la troisième dimension est l'identification des métiers, outils et méthodes pour le développement des produits. La partie expérimentale de notre travail nous a conduit à valider l'outil développer et proposer comment l'exploiter par des concepteurs. L'optimisation est réalisée dans notre travail par la proposition de l'outil tridimensionnel d'un coté et de l'autre par l'exploitation des algorithmes d'optimisation pour la modélisation de l'outil. Des nouvelles pistes de recherche pour l'amélioration sont identifiées et proposées pour des futurs travaux The optimization of the design process is a research evolving highlighted in numerous references and business practices with the aim improving and developing new products. Our approach is a continuation of those activities that takes as its starting point the diversity of existing design processes and the difficulty of achieving a selection where adaptation. Hence our problem is summarized around a central question which we formulate as follows: how to optimize the choice of the design process subject to a constrained environment? The answer to this question is through the proposition of a tool Help in choosing which converges to the installation of a design process. This tool is three-dimensional, where the first dimension relates to the preparation of the upstream design phase, the second dimension selects a design process on a map classification and the objective of the third dimension is the identification of trades tools and methods for product development. The experimental part of our work has led us to validate the developed tool and propose how to use by designers. Optimization is achieved in our work by the proposal of a three-dimensional tool side and the other by the use of optimization algorithms for modeling tool. New avenues of research for improvement are identified and proposed for future work

Chez l'homme, la mémoire épisodique est l'aptitude cognitive qui lui permet de récupérer une expérience passée vécue, ou épisode, selon un état de conscience spécifique. La particularité de ce système de mémoire est la construction de liens entre les dimensions contextuelles constitutif de l'épisode mnésique : l'évènement « Quoi ? », le moment « Quand ? », et l'endroit « Où ? ». Les études classiques de la mémoire épisodique indiquent que ces dimensions sont traitées et intégrées dans les structures corticales comprenant principalement le lobe temporal médian et le cortex préfrontal. Des études récentes de la mémoire en IRMf faisant usage de matériaux expérimentaux plus naturelles et écologiques ont ouvert la perspective de réseaux corticaux sous-jacents de la mémoire épisodique s'étendant au-delà de ces structures. En effet, ces études suggèrent l'idée que le lobe pariétal joue un rôle important dans la constitution d'un épisode mnésique au contexte enrichi. Cependant les mécanismes et structures relatives aux traitements des caractéristiques contextuelles d'un évènement restent débattues, et les interactions induites entre les différentes dimensions contextuelles d'un épisode mnésique, lors de son rappel, sont mal compris. Cette thèse présente 3 objectifs principaux : 1) développer de nouveaux protocoles expérimentaux pour étudier la mémoire des épisodes mnésiques encodés dans des situations comprenant un contexte riche et écologique ; 2) évaluer l'influence du contexte temporel et spatial sur la performance de rappel des épisodes encodés dans ces situations hautement écologiques ; et 3) élucider les structures corticales sous-jacentes aux traitements de ces dimensions contextuelles. Avec ces objectifs en vue, j'ai développé des protocoles d'études faisant usage de films, de réalité virtuelle et d'une application mobile géolocalisée lors de la phase d'encodage. J'ai étudié les performances de rappel comportementale, et sous IRMf, par le moyen de 2 tâches : une tâche hybride Rappel/Familier et de Mémoire source ; et une tâche de jugement de l'ordre temporel. Mes résultats comportementaux de la première tâche démontrent que le rappel correct et confiant de l'endroit « Où ? » et du moment « Quand ? » prédit la probabilité du choix rappel, et non familier, du « Quoi ? » ; et cela, dans l'ensemble des modalités d'encodage. L'étude IRMf a mis en évidence une activité accrue du Précuneus concomitante. Dans la tâche de jugement de l'ordre temporel j'ai observé une modulation des temps de réaction et de l'activité du Précuneus en fonction de la distance temporelle entre les épisodes pendant la phase l'encodage. Plus important, à travers les études, j'ai constaté que ces effets comportementaux et d'imagerie sont modulés en fonction d'autres facteurs contextuels associés aux épisodes écologiques (p. ex. facteurs spatiaux, contenu sémantique, modalité d'encodage), ce qui démontre que l'information épisodique traitée par le Précuneus dépasse les dimensions classiques "quoi, où, quand". Ces résultats mettent en avant l'implication du lobe pariétal médian pour le rappel des épisodes mnésiques écologiques et suggérant son implication dans le rappel conscient et subjectif d'un épisode. J'interprète ces résultats à la lumière des théories reconstructives de la mémoire épisodique et je propose que le Précuneus soit impliqué dans l'intégration multidimensionnelle des épisodes mnésiques enrichis selon une perspective subjective/personnelle accrue. Plus généralement, mes études appuient l'importance d'étudier la cognition humaine dans son milieu écologique, en démontrant ici le rôle crucial du Précuneus, qui est une structure éloignée du réseau classique temporo-frontale de la mémoire épisodique In humans, episodic memory is the cognitive ability that allows them to recover a past experience, or episode, according to a specific state of consciousness. The particularity of this memory system is the construction of links between the contextual dimensions constituting the memory episode: the "What?" event, the "When?" moment, and the "Where?" place. Conventional studies of episodic memory indicate that these dimensions are processed and integrated into cortical structures mainly comprising the median temporal lobe and the prefrontal cortex. Recent studies of fMRI memory using more natural and ecological experimental materials have opened the perspective of underlying cortical networks of episodic memory extending beyond theses regions. Indeed, these studies suggest that the parietal lobe plays an important role in the constitution of a memory episode with an enriched context. However, the mechanisms and structures relating to the processing of the contextual features of an event remain debated, and the interactions induced between the different contextual dimensions of a memory episode, when it is recalled, are poorly understood. This thesis presents 3 main objectives: 1) to develop new experimental protocols to study the memory of encoded episodes in situations involving naturalistic and rich contexts; 2) to assess the influence of the temporal and spatial context on the recall performance of encoded episodes in these highly naturalistic situations; and 3) to elucidate the cortical structures underlying the treatment of these contextual dimensions. With these objectives in mind, I developed new protocols using films, virtual reality and a geolocated mobile application during the encoding phase. I studied the behavioral performance of recall, and related functional brain activity using fMRI, by means of 2 tasks: a hybrid Recall/Family and Source Memory task; and a temporal order judgment task. My behavioral results from the first task show that the correct and confident recall of the "Where?" place and the "When?" time predicts the probability of successful recall of the “What”? over and above any familiarity rating; and this, in all encoding modalities. The fMRI results showed increased activity in the Precuneus. In the task of judging the temporal order I observed a modulation of the retrieval reaction times, and activity of the Precuneus, as a function of the temporal distance between the episodes during the encoding phase. More importantly, through the studies, I have found that these behavioural and imaging effects are modulated according to other contextual factors associated with ecological episodes (e. g. spatial factors, semantic content, encoding modality), demonstrating that the episodic information processed by the Precuneus exceeds the traditional "what, where, when" dimensions. These results highlight the involvement of the medial parietal lobe in the recall of ecological memory episodes and suggest its involvement in the conscious and subjective memory recall. I interpret these results in the light of reconstructive theories of episodic memory and propose that the Precuneus is involved in the multidimensional integration of enriched memory episodes from an enhanced subjective/personal perspective. More generally, my studies support the importance of studying human cognition in naturalistic environments, by demonstrating here the crucial role of the Precuneus, which is a structure remote from the classic temporo-frontal network of episodic memory

Le droit du travail est constamment critiqué pour son manque de « réalisme » : on lui reproche d’être élaboré par un législateur trop éloigné des aspirations variées des salariés et des employeurs, d’avoir des règles trop uniformes eu égard à la diversité des situations et d’être inadapté aux finalités qui lui sont assignées. Le droit du travail moderne se caractérise pourtant par les efforts faits pour répondre à cette critique. Et cela ne date pas d’hier. Ce caractère était déjà présent dans la législation ouvrière qui est née à la fin du XIXe siècle, dans la grande révolte des faits contre le Code civil. Mieux, ce réalisme était déjà dans le droit travail d’avant la législation ouvrière, celui de la Révolution, du Code civil et du premier XIXe siècle.Cette thèse propose plusieurs concepts distincts de réalisme, en lien avec la typologie des rationalités du droit de Max Weber et de certains de ses continuateurs. Ces concepts sont mobilisés pour analyser différentes dimensions de la législation relative aux ouvriers et à ceux qui les emploient produite entre 1791 et 1841. Better still, this realism was already in the the labor law from before, that of the Revolution, the Civil Code and the first nineteenth century.This thesis proposes several distinct concepts of realism, in connection with the typology of the rationalities of the law of Max Weber and some of his continuators. These concepts are used to analyze different dimensions of the legislation relating to the workers and those who employ them produced between 1791 and 1841. Cette thèse jette la lumière sur la notion d'arbitraire linguistique qui, depuis les premières réflexions sur la nature du langage, ne cesse d'être, plus ou moins, un objet de débat: l'origine du langage est-elle humaine ou divine? Son statut est-il conventionnel ou naturel? La dénomination des choses est-elle fondée sur l'arbitraire humain ou sur sa raison? Par conséquent, le signe linguistique est-il arbitraire ou motivé? Ce débat s'étend depuis l'Antiquité jusqu'à nos jours, dans une proportion d'intensité variable en temps et en lieu. Mais dans tout cela, qu'entendons-nous au juste par arbitraire? Et pourquoi représente-t-il toujours une problématique?Dans ce contexte, nous avons conduit un travail qui parcourt l'histoire, de l'Antiquité à la période actuelle, pour voir comment la question de l'arbitraire a été traitée chez les savants. La globalité de cette étude permet de construire une idée du point de divergence qui fait de l'arbitraire une question autant soutenue que débattue par les savants. Ainsi, cette étude est conçue pour réexaminer la notion de l'arbitraire afin de pouvoir la définir et identifier sa problématique.Conduite dans une méthode de travail qui repose sur l'analyse logique et philosophique des textes, cette étude montre en conclusion que le problème de l'arbitraire réside dans l'ambiguïté de sa notion. Celle-ci est due à la multiplicité des sens qu'il peut renfermer, donc à la multiplicité de sa conception chez les philosophes et linguistes, mais aussi à la multiplicité des points de vue pour déterminer la partie concernée par l'arbitraire dans la théorie du signe. Autrement dit, c'est en terme de l'arbitraire des idées, qu'on peut parler de l'arbitraire du langage.La thèse finit par présenter une position sur le langage et l'arbitraire, construite sur deux questions: i) le fait qu'il existe des lois dans le langage qui gèrent son fonctionnement selon un système propre; ii) le fait qu'il existe un lien pertinent entre la pensée du groupe et sa langue This thesis sheds light on the linguistic notion of arbitrariness, which, since the very first reflections on the nature of language, continues – to a greater or lesser extent – to be a subject of debate: is the origin of language human or divine? Is its status conventional or natural? Is the naming of things based on human arbitrariness or human reason? Consequently, is the linguistic sign arbitrary or motivated? This debate extends from antiquity to the present day, in a proportion of variable intensity in time and place. But in all this, what do we mean by arbitrary? And why has it always represented a problematic?In this context, we have conducted a survey which retraces the history of this notion from antiquity to the present day, to see how the question of arbitrariness has been treated by savants. The global nature of this study can enable the construction of an idea of the point of divergence which makes arbitrariness into a matter of such sustained and controversial debate among savants. Thus, this study was designed to review the concept of arbitrariness in order to identify and define the problem.This study has been conducted using a working method based on the logical and philosophical analysis of texts. It conclusively demonstrates that the problem of the arbitrary lies in the ambiguity of the concept. This is due to the multiplicity of meanings that it can contain, that is, the multiplicity of its conceptions among philosophers and linguists, but this is also due to the multiplicity of points of view applied to determining the part affected by the arbitrary within the theory of the sign. In other words, it is in terms of arbitrary ideas that we can speak of the arbitrariness of language.The thesis ends by presenting a position about language and arbitrariness, which has been constructed around two issues: i) the fact that there are laws in the language that manage its working according to an own system; ii) that there is a relevant connection between the thought of a group and its language تلقي هذه الأطروحة الضوء على مفهوم الاعتباط اللغوي الذي ما انفك يكون بشكل او بآخر موضوعا للجدل منذ البدايات الأولى للتفكير في طبيعة اللغة : فهل إن أصل اللغة إنسانيّ أم إلهي؟ وهل أنّ تشريعها جاء بشكل اتفاقي أم طبيعي؟ هل جرت التسمية على أساس اعتباطية الإنسان ام على عقلانيته؟ وبالنتيجة فهل ان الإشارة اللغوية اعتباطية ام معللة؟ امتد هذا الجدل منذ العصور القديمة وحتى يومنا هذا بنسب متفاوتة بالشدة في الزمان والمكان. ولكن في كل هذا ، ما الذي نعنيه بالضبط بالاعتباط؟ ولماذا يمثل دائما إشكالية؟في هذا السياق أجرينا بحثا طاف التاريخ برمته منذ العصر القديم حتى يومنا هذا كي نتعرف كيف تمت معالجة هذا الموضوع عند علماء اللغة. ان شمولية هذا العمل تسمح بتكوين فكرة حول نقطة الخلاف الذي جعل من الاعتباط موضوعا قابلا للتأييد والرفض على حد سواء بين العلماء. وعليه فقد صممت هذه الدراسة لإعادة النظر في مفهوم الاعتباط من اجل تعريفه وتحديد اشكاليته.تتألف الأطروحة من أربعة أجزاء فصلت في سياق زمني ، ولكن رتبت على وفق التوزيع ألموضوعاتي. يتناول الجزء الأول مكونات الاعتباط كعناصر تعريفية ، وأنواع الاعتباط ، ويبحث الجزء الثاني في إشكالية الاعتباط من خلال دراسة جذور فكره والحجج التي قدمت في هذا الطرح والطرح الذي عارضه ، الأمر الذي ترك المشكلة بلا حل، إضافة إلى المقترحات التي حاول من خلالها العلماء الخروج من المشكلة. وقد خصص الجزء الثالث حصرا حول ملامح الاعتباط عند سوسير ؛ في حين ناقش الجزء الرابع مفهوم الاعتباط في الفكر الحديث.أجريت هذه الدراسة على وفق منهج بحث استند على التحليل المنطقي والفلسفي للنصوص. وبينت بالنتيجة أن مشكلة الاعتباط تكمن في غموض مفهومه. ويعود ذلك إلى تعدد المعاني التي يمكن ان تحتويه المفردة، وبالتالي تعدد طريقة فهمه عند الفلاسفة وعلماء اللغة ، إضافة إلى تعدد وجهات النظر في تحديد الجانب المعني بالاعتباط في نظرية الإشارة اللغوية. وبعبارة أخرى، يمكننا القول إنّ اعتباطية اللغة تكمن في إطار اعتباطية الأفكار.تقدم الأطروحة في النهاية فكر المؤلف حول اللغة ومسألة الاعتباط اللغوي، وقد بناه على مسألتين: الأولى أن هناك قوانين في اللغة تدير حركته على وفق نظام خاص؛ والثانية أن هناك علاقة وثيقة بين فكر المجموعة ولغتها

Abstract:

Le fait même de nous engager dans un projet explicatif, que nous nommons canoniquement philosophique, nous convoque à ce présupposé de l’affinité entre langage et monde. Nous proposons dans l’introduction une approche cohérentiste des systèmes philosophiques, définis comme des visions du monde où ontologie et épistémologie se doivent un support mutuel. Les positions épistémologiques de Locke, définies par son empirisme, sont juxtaposées à une conception corpusculaire de la réalité. Nous montrerons que les tensions qui existent entre ces deux positionnements sont consolidées par une attitude doxastique profondément réaliste, aboutissant à la fameuse thèse de la ressemblances des qualités primaires réelles et perçues. La science de l’époque est ainsi promue par une ligne rationaliste d’une affinité profonde entre ces catégories qui nous rendent intelligible notre environnement et la réalité même. Le naturalisme contemporain s’appuie quant à lui tout entier sur l’intelligibilité que nous avons du réel au travers de l’activité scientifique, fondant dès lors une résurgence de l’ontologie comme cet idéal d’une accessibilité rationnelle du réel, par le biais de procédures largement a priori, que nos sciences affleurent. Si les prétentions des métaphysiciens à pouvoir remplir cet objectif au moyen de préconceptions ontologiques doivent être déçues, il paraît plus juste de valoriser l’a priori mathématique qui, pace le modèle du réseau holiste de Quine, semble empiriquement incorrigible. Son efficacité ‘déraisonnable’ dans l’heuristique de nos sciences fondamentales le place en première ligne dans la constitution des différentes strates d’objectivation de notre environnement The very fact of being engaged in an explicative program, canonically called philosophical, calls us to this presupposition of an affinity between world and words. We propose in the introduction a coherentist approach to philosophical systems, defined as worldviews where ontology and epistemology are in charge of mutual support. In Locke’s empiricism, the epistemological line defined by his empiricism is coupled to a corpuscularist conception of reality. We’ll show that the lines of tension existing between those two positions are consolidated by a deeply realistic doxastic attitude, bringing to the famous thesis of the likeness between real and perceived first qualities. The science of that time is thus promoted by a rationalist line of a deep affinity between the categories that make our environment intelligible and the very reality. Today’s naturalism leans entirely on the intelligibility that we have of reality through scientific activities, so founding the reappearance of ontology as this ideal of rational access to reality, by means of largely a priori procedures, that our sciences flush. If the pretentions of the metaphysicians to meet those objectives have to be deceived, it seems more judicious to value the mathematical a priori which, pace Quine’s model of the seamless web of belief, seems empirically incorrigible. It’s unreasonable effectiveness in the heuristics of our fundamental sciences places effectively it in the very first line in the constitution of the different strata of objectivation of our environnement

Dans le contexte actuel de mutation, les dispositifs d'insertion professionnelle peuvent aider les jeunes cadres dans leur adaptation aux mutations liées aux pratiques institutionnelles, tout comme l'université a un rôle de facilitateur de l'inclusion des enseignants stagiaires à travers les dispositifs pédagogiques de formation mis en place. Le processus de socialisation et de professionnalisation proposée dans notre recherche sont à rapprocher de la conception de Claude Dubar et de Perez-Roux (1998 ; 2010 ; 2012) pour qui l'identité professionnelle se construit durant une double socialisation anticipatrice (formation) et organisationnelle (insertion) à travers une approche systémique des conduites du sujet évoluant dans différents contextes. Cette identité peut être spécifique de la fonction exercée, notamment celle des enseignants. Dans le cadre d'une double approche comparative et interculturelle, l'objectif de notre recherche propose de prendre en compte ces éléments de professionnalisation à travers un double objectif qui consiste à analyser et à décrire l'évolution du rapport au travail des jeunes cadres durant leur primo insertion professionnelle. Il s'agit également de décrire et d'analyser les dispositifs et pratiques pédagogiques d'enseignement en France et au Gabon avec une attention particulière portée aux difficultés rencontrées et décrites par les apprenants, en vue de renseigner les conditions de construction des dispositifs éducatifs de formation des formateurs dans un contexte culturel donné. L'étude a été réalisée auprès de quatre groupes de population constitués pour la première approche comparative de 60 étudiants français issus de Master 2 professionnel et 34 jeunes cadres qui exercent en France d'un coté. Pour la seconde approche comparative il s'agit de 60 enseignants stagiaires en formation en alternance dans des écoles supérieures de professorat en France (30 sujets) et au Gabon (30 sujets). Le recueil de données s'appuie sur une approche descriptive / quantitative (Questionnaire) complétée par une approche qualitative/ analytique (questions ouvertes ; entretiens semi directifs). Une adaptation des outils de recueil des données pour chaque population a été nécessaire. Les résultats mettent en évidence d'une part l'existence d'un rapport au travail variable et évoluant au cours de la transition formation emploi. En effet, la confrontation à la réalité du monde professionnel explique une diminution du rapport au travail observé au cours de la socialisation organisationnelle chez les jeunes cadres. A travers les entretiens réalisés, il a en effet été facile de déterminer et de comprendre ce qui, au-delà de la satisfaction globale observée due, au fait d'avoir trouvé un premier emploi, amenait les jeunes cadres à développer un rapport au travail moins affirmé que celui des étudiants. Outre la rémunération fortement mentionnée, le besoin de se sentir compris, encouragé et soutenu par son management s'est révélé être un facteur déterminant dans le rapport au travail développé au cours de cette phase critique qu'est « l'entrée au travail ». D'autres part, les résultats confirment le malaise existant au sein des systèmes éducatifs gabonais et français tant au niveau de la perception des stagiaires des pratiques pédagogiques des enseignants qu'au niveau des conditions matérielles d'apprentissage, qu'ils décrivent comme précaires et insuffisants selon les contextes. Les apprenants revendiquent systématiquement une véritable inclusion de l'université (changement des dispositifs). Cependant, l'identité professionnelle enseignante en construction semble fondée sur une détermination et un positivisme qui ne semble pas ébranlée par les réalités du milieu In the current changing environment, the employability devices can help young professionals in adapting to the changes related to institutional practices, as the university has a facilitating role in the inclusion of trainee teachers through the educational training systems already in place. The socialization and professionalization process proposed in our research are similar to the design of Claude Dubar and Perez-Roux (1998 ; 2010 ; 2012) to which professional identity is constructed in a double anticipatory socialization (training) and organizational (insertion) through a systemic approach to the subject lines evolving in different contexts. This identity may be specific to the function performed, notably that of teachers. As part of a double comparative and intercultural approach, the objective of our research proposes to consider these elements of professionalization through a dual objective to analyze and describe the evolution in relation to the work of young professionals during their first-professional insertion. It also aims to describe and analyze the pedagogical teaching systems and practices in France and Gabon with particular attention to the difficulties encountered and described by learners, with a view to inquire the educational construction conditions for for the trainers training in a given cultural context.The study was conducted among four population groups constituted for the first comparative approach from 60 French students from Master 2 Professional and 34 young executives exercising in France on the one hand. For the second comparative approach it is linked to 60 teacher trainees in alternating training in colleges of professorship in France (30 subjects) and (30 subjects) in Gabon. Data collection is based on a descriptive / quantitative approach (Questionnaire) completed by qualitative / analytical approach (open questions, semi-structured interviews). An adaptation of the data collection tools for each population was neccessary. The results bring to light on the one hand the existence a report to flexible working and evolving during the transition between training and employment. Indeed, the confrontation with the reality of the professional world explain a decrease in the report observed at work during the organizational socialization among young professionals. Other hand, the results confirm the existing malaise in Gabonese and French education systems both in terms of the perception of trainees teaching practices at the level of conditions learning material, they describe as inadequate and insecure in different contexts. Learners always claim a real inclusion of the university (change devices). However, teacher professional identity in construction, seems based on a determination and positivism that does not seem shaken by the realities of the environment

Cette thèse se propose d’opérer un rapprochement entre quatre penseurs emblématiques de la période qui va de la Grande Rébellion à la Glorieuse Révolution en Angleterre au dix-septième siècle : Thomas Hobbes, James Harrington, Algernon Sydney et John Locke. Ces penseurs au statut et à la postérité différents se caractérisent par de fortes divergences théoriques : théoricien de l’absolutisme pour Hobbes, partisans d’un régime de représentation populaire pour Harrington et Sydney, tenant d’une monarchie parlementaire pour Locke. Malgré ces divergences, on a pu dégager une perspective commune chez ces auteurs, marquée par le souci de prendre en compte les conditions réelles dans lesquelles s’exerce le pouvoir politique. Cette perspective commune, qualifiée de réaliste, s’articule autour de trois grands axes : tout d’abord elle se signale par une volonté de fonder l’organisation politique dans les principes de nature, tels qu’ils sont découverts par un examen historique des sociétés humaines, ainsi que par une démarche rationnelle ; elle les conduit ensuite à rechercher les conditions optimales de préservation de la République ainsi fondée ; enfin, elle les entraîne à prendre en compte l’intérêt de la République dans le traitement d’un certain nombre de questions politiques fondamentales qui se posaient alors. On conclura en établissant que ce réalisme les pousse à formuler des propositions similaires sur la nature et l’étendue du pouvoir qui doit être confié aux gouvernants, quel que soit le régime envisagé The purport of this doctoral thesis is to bring in perspective four emblematic thinkers of the period of English history extending between The Great Rebellion and the Glorious Revolution : Thomas Hobbes, John Harrington, Algernon Sydney and John Locke. These authors, whose respective status and posterity widely differ, are divided by strong ideological differences : Hobbes was a proponent of absolutist government, Harrington and Sidney inclined in favour of a regime based on popular representation and John Locke was a partisan of parliamentary monarchy. Whatever their differences, these philosophers share a common attitude that consists in taking into account the real conditions presiding over the exercise of political power. This common perspective which has been described as political realism is founded on three main axes : the first one is the will to choose a foundation of all political organisations the principles of nature as evidenced by the historical study of human societies and rational analysis ; the second axis is to be found in their search for optimal conditions to ensure the preservation of the Commonwealth built on such foundation ; the third and last axis consists in taking into account the Commonwealth ‘s interest in the resolution of a certain number of fundamental political questions that prevailed during that period. We shall establish in conclusion that their common realism induces them to put forward similar propositions on the nature and extent of the power that political leaders must be entrusted with, whatever the chosen form of government may be

Boschs ökumenischem Missionsparadigma als Vorschlag für ein ganzheitliches Missionsverständnis mit den Brennpunk-ten Verkündigung und soziales Engagement in einer postmodernen Welt. Auf der Suche nach einer geschichtsbezogenen Eschatologie als Grundlage und motivierende Hoffnung für die Kirche in ih-rer Mission, verweist Bosch mit einiger Zurückhaltung auf die heilsgeschichtliche Theologie seines Lehrers Oscar Cullmann. Die Arbeit setzt sich daher in einem ersten Teil kritisch mit unterschied-lichen eschatologischen Entwürfen und insbesondere mit Cullmanns Eschatologie und deren Impli-kationen auf das Missionsverständnis auseinander. Im Anschluss wird danach gefragt, ob und in-wiefern die Theologie von N.T. Wright die cullmannsche Eschatologie in Sinne von Bosch zu er-weitern vermag. Es wird schliesslich deutlich, dass Wrights eschatologischer Ansatz eine tragfähi-gere Grundlage für ein ganzheitliches Missionsverständnis darstellt, als derjenige von Cullmann. This missionary-theological investigation takes as its point of departure David J. Bosch’s ecumeni-cal missionary paradigm as a proposal for a holistic understanding of mission with a focus on pro-clamation and social engagement in a postmodern world. In the search for an eschatology related to history as a foundation and motivating hope for the church in its mission, Bosch refers with some reservation to the salvation historical theology of his teacher Oscar Cullmann. Accordingly, the first part of the work is devoted to a critical engagement with different eschatological conceptions and especially with Cullmann’s eschatology and its implications for the understanding of mission. After this, we then ask whether and to what extent the theology of N.T. Wright can expand the Cullman-nian eschatology in the sense of Bosch. It becomes clear in the end that Wright’s eschatological approach represents a more viable foundation for a holistic understanding of mission than that of Cullmann. The study aims to contribute to the debate over eschatology and at the same to present a critical appraisal of Wright’s theology from a missionary-theological perspective. Problématique : Il est de plus en plus clair que la pérennité des systèmes de santé repose en partie sur un élargissement des soins offerts par des équipes de première ligne. Il existe de nombreux exemples de modèles de soins primaires performants dans plusieurs pays. Par contre, en général, le Québec peine à atteindre ses objectifs d’accessibilité, d’équité et d’efficience. Les études s’accumulent sur l'importance des soins infirmiers en soins de santé primaire, mais elles fournissent peu de données sur comment entreprendre ces changements en fonction des éléments contextuels propres à chaque milieu. La complexité des interventions à mettre en place pose de nombreux défis. Objectif : Ce mémoire rapporte les résultats d'une revue réaliste portant sur l'optimisation de la contribution des infirmières dans les équipes interprofessionnelles en soins de santé primaire. Méthodologie : Pour ce faire, une analyse de la littérature, basée sur la revue réaliste et l’analyse logique, a permis de déterminer des caractéristiques structurelles désirables de modèles de services de première ligne qui tendent à une contribution étendue ou optimisée des équipes interprofessionnelles. Résultats : La revue réaliste a permis d'élaborer deux typologies analytiques permettant d'établir des bases de fonctionnement cohérentes pour améliorer la performance des modèles de services de première ligne. Conclusion : Ces typologies souhaitent ultimement faciliter l'utilisation des données probantes aux décideurs afin de soutenir les processus de transformation nécessaires en première ligne au Québec. Background: It increasingly appears that the sustainability of health systems depends in part on expanding the care provided by primary care teams. There are many examples of successful primary care models in several countries. However, Quebec generally fails to meet its objectives of accessibility, equity and efficiency. There is growing evidence on the importance of nursing care in primary health services, but it provides little actionable advice on how to reform primary care models given the diversity of clinical settings. The complexity of the interventions needed to reform primary care models is a challenge. Objective: This research reports the results of a realist review on optimizing the contribution of interprofessional and nursing teams in primary health care. Method: An analysis of the literature based on the realist review and the logic analysis was conducted to determine the desirable structural characteristics of health care services models that tend to an extended or optimized contribution of interprofessional teams. Results: The realist review helped to develop two analytical typologies to establish coherent operating bases to improve the performance of models of primary health services. Practice implications : These typologies ultimately aim to facilitate the use of evidence for decision makers to support the necessary transformation processes of primary health care in Quebec.
