Abstract:
This article offers an outline of a pragmatic sociology of the book. Whilst ubiquitous, books have received relatively little attention from sociologists. I propose to remedy this situation by drawing upon the ideas of GH Mead, namely his neo-Hegelian theory of the subject–object relationship. Mead’s chief insight is that objects such as books are first social and only then physical entities. They have agency not because of their thing-ness, so to speak, but because of their sociality. After reviewing the existing literature on the book, I discuss Mead’s most relevant contributions. In the proposal for a pragmatic sociology of the book that follows, I combine pragmatism’s focus upon the materiality of meaning-production with genealogy’s concern with power and violence. I conclude with an illustration of the approach: the simultaneous decanonization of Tocqueville’s Democracy in America among sociologists today and its canonization in political science.

Abstract:
Objectives: İlhami Güneral was a Turkish physician and surgeon whose contributions to anatomy education and medical illustration remained under-appreciated until this day. This study aims to outline his achievements throughout his career and acknowledge his unreported contributions to anatomical sciences in Türkiye. Methods: A series of interviews were conducted with his surviving family, relatives, and friends. Additional documents were also collected from various national and international institutions. Results: İlhami Güneral was born in 1914 in Anadolu Kavağı, İstanbul. He attended İstanbul University Faculty of Medicine and graduated in 1942. Upon graduation, he published his first book titled “Diseksiyon Atlası” which he also illustrated himself. His illustrations were later used in Prof. Dr. Zeki Zeren’s dissection handbook published in 1953. He visited and worked with renowned neuropathologist Philipp Schwartz between 1958 and 1960 in Warren, Pennsylvania. During his stay, he co-constructed a detachable “Transparent Brain Model” for teaching brain anatomy which was awarded with the Billings Gold Medal at the 109th Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association. After his return to Türkiye, he published his final illustrated anatomy atlas in 1972, the “Atlas Cerebri Humani”. He spent the remaining days of his life in his long standing home in Ödemiş, İzmir, as a private physician and surgeon. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993, and passed away due to his illness in 2006. Conclusion: This interesting and unique dramatis persona is the author and illustrator of the first original dissection manual printed in Turkish.

Abstract:
Scriven Bolton (1883-1929) was an amateur astronomer from Leeds active in the first three decades of the twentieth century. He was also a skilled artist and commercial illustrator, specialising in astronomical subjects. He produced a substantial body of work which was reproduced in a wide range of publications, including newspapers, magazines and books published on both sides of the Atlantic. His work was intended to be scientifically accurate, and illustrates the consensus astronomical knowledge in the first decades of the twentieth century. No comprehensive list of his work was ever produced and he is now little remembered. This paper is a first report in an attempt to recover some his work and ultimately assess his contribution to early astronomical illustration.

Joseph, Steven F. "Alfred W. Bennett and the Photographic Gift Book." Rijksmuseum Bulletin 70, no. 3 (August 30, 2022): 222–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.52476/trb.12831.

Full text
Abstract:
Alfred W. Bennett (1833-1902), better known to posterity as a botanist, was active as a publisher in London in the eighteen-sixties. Almost uniquely amongst his contemporaries, Bennett specialized in books illustrated with mounted photographic prints for the middle-class market. Every year, new ‘photographic gift books’ would be released to coincide with the Christmas season of giving. Subject matter was mainly topographical or literary. Text and images were associated creatively; design, typography and photographic printing were of the highest quality. While Bennett’s career in photographically illustrated books was brief, starting in 1861 and ending in 1868, he made a distinctive contribution to the creation and development of the genre in Britain. The article evaluates Bennett’s career and impact, covering the following topics: the Quaker context that influenced Bennett’s activity as a publisher and photograph dealer; Bennett’s invention of the photographic gift book as a genre; synergy with Lovell Reeve, another pioneering photographic book publisher; the crucial importance of literary tourism for Bennett’s output; assimilation of the concept of the Picturesque within photographic illustration; the extension of subject matter to Continental Europe; and the decline of the photographically illustrated book business in the hands of Bennett’s successor Abraham Provost.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article contributes to the debates on the role of anthropology in refugee law research by showing the added value of an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of complex asylum claims related to cultural and religious beliefs that are unfamiliar to the Western perspective. Based on the analysis of asylum claims in UK courts involving witchcraftbased persecution in the country of origin—both applicants who feared becoming victims of witchcraft practices and those who could be accused of having engaged in witchcraft practices—I demonstrate how anthropology can provide the tools for bridging the gaps between the law in the books and its implementation in practice and solving issues that are beyond the scope of the law. In particular, anthropology can feed into a broader legal conceptualization that accounts for the realities of our diverse societies and helps explain how fear of persecution due to witchcraft can indeed be real and connected with serious human rights violations. Moreover, cultural expertise can assist in assessing asylum claims in their cultural, historical, and political contexts, affording the claimant a fairer and better adjudicated outcome. Nevertheless, the use of anthropology inevitably comes with some challenges related to the different fields’ epistemologies, languages, and styles, as well as a lack of appreciation for interdisciplinarity in some areas of academia.

As suggested by the title, the contributions reflected trends guiding the theoretical paradigm pre-eminently associated with MIT. After reading this collection, a colleague quipped that she wondered how well the view from Building 20 accorded with the broad research world beyond it. In this connection, the two books under review represent perspectives on language analysis which encourage one to pause and consider the present theoretical landscape in linguistics, and, less directly, the role of linguistics within modern cognitive science. Among their other merits, both books provide a rich and useful illustration of some of the perspectives on language analysis outside of Building 20. In doing so, they also help to define a more interesting research landscape than that usually characterized as an opposition between ‘formalists’ versus ‘cognitive/functionalists’.

Abstract:
Neoliberal economists say that growth is easy, provided the state does not obstruct the natural growth-inducing processes of a capitalist economy. They point to the success of South Korea and Taiwan as evidence that this proposition also holds for quite poor economies. Using chapters of Helen Hughes's edited volume by way of illustration, this article shows that the neoliberals ignore so much contrary evidence as to suggest that the neoliberal paradigm has entered a degenerative stage, like classical economics in the years before Keynes's breakthrough and like much Marxist writing of the 1970s.Two recent books about East Asia offer ways forward. The one by Alice Amsden argues that Korea has done better than other developing countries because it has created a more powerful synergy between a state that aggressively steers market competition and large, diversified business groups whose firms focus strategically on production processes at the shop floor. In conditions of “late development” this synergy is the key to success. Stephan Haggard's book accepts the core economic mechanism of the neoliberals but argues that the choice between sensible export-oriented policies, as in East Asia, or unsensible secondary import-substitution policies, as in Latin America, is determined by a complex conjunction of international pressures, domestic coalitions, political institutions, and ideas. Both books make important contributions to the debate. But they are weakened by not situating the experience of their case studies within an account of trends in the world system and by not addressing the question of what prevented massive “government failure” in market interventions in the East Asian cases. The last part of this paper takes a short step in this direction.

Abstract:
Abstract Among the artistically valuable philosophical stories with illustration which have been translated into Slovak from Norwegian literature for children and youth since 2010 are the books of Jostein Gaarder (Knižka otázok / English –Questions Asked, 2013;Anton a Jonatán / English –Anton and Jonathan, 2014), Jon Fosse (Kant, 2015) and Elisabeth Helland Larsen (Ja som smrť / English – Life and I: A Story about Death, 2016). The mentioned authors have all published books in which a narrower philosophical function is linked with an implicit aesthetic function. These writers and/as philosophers reflect in their books subjects and issues which are represented in a smaller measure in Slovak intentional literature and take on questions about the meaning of existence in the face of death, whether through experiences with death, or death as an integral component of life or about the boundaries of knowledge. In this contribution we will devote ourselves to selected artistic texts with the philosophical issues of boundaries (between life and death, of knowing) in literary and creative interpretation in order to emphasize that their reflection in literature may lead to more integrated identification of the world of children.

Abstract:
This article is an excerpt from a Master's degree research, whose main objective was to understand the contribution of picture books to the formation of young readers of Children's Literature. Thus, its content contains some lines from one of the Dialogical Meetings held between the researcher and an illustrator about the gestation process of one of her works – Max Emiliano – with the intention of reading the illustrations towards a more in-depth understanding of the narrative present in the image book. To achieve this purpose, the methodology used was the analysis of a work based on dialogue with the illustrator and comparison with the theoretical framework of the philosophy of language with the thoughts of some researchers of Literature and illustrated books. As a result, teaching how to read images/illustrations at school, through Children's Literature books, contributes to the formation of readers from a young age, as it sensitively and aesthetically broadens their perspective. This process of attributing meanings to the image tends to expand throughout life as a result of each person's reading and imagery experiences and favors a more complete formation and development of the literary reader's understanding.

Abstract:
Children’s literature has always been created and published due to its importance to the aesthetical, cultural, and educational needs of young brains. It is purposefully written not only for pleasure and fun but also to teach fundamental socio-cultural values and develop early academic concepts. A voluminous juvenile literature has been produced in the English language for more than a century. However, it was dominated by British-American culture in its context, structure, vocabulary, presentation and even illustration. On the other hand, the growing number of immigrants and children who read English stories worldwide, either for learning or fun, felt it hard to relate themselves to the cultural settings of these stories. Eventually, this need drove giant publishers like Oxford, Cambridge, Macmillan, Scholastic Inc., and others to incorporate diversity and multi-ethnicity in their publications, rather than to make them Euro-American-centric. In general, Muslims—being a significant community in English speaking world—have been striving to maintain their religious identity, while attempting to assimilate into the majority culture. In addition to their various endeavours, from the dawn of the twenty-first century a significant number of women have started writing various fictional, non-fictional, illustrated, and non-illustrated books for children of different ages. In this context, this study provides an overview of women’s contributions to the promulgation of Islamic culture and civilization, using the children’s literature in the English language as their tool.

Abstract:
In this study, the authors examine how emergent bilingual second graders collaboratively constructed textual understandings, a phenomenon they call intercomprehending, by building on each other's contributions and positioning their ideas in relation to peer ideas. The study traces the interrelationships of the utterances of emergent bilingual students discussing text in English for the first time in the context of a small-group discussion focused on English-language picture books. The textual ideas students shared were highly contingent on peer ideas and at the same time drew substantially on the text itself, particularly the illustrations. The authors argue that intercomprehending may serve as a fruitful way for emergent bilingual students to build on what they know as they read and learn in school and that classroom teachers may do well to build on that resource.

Abstract:
This paper delves into the analytical interpretation of the Holy Quran, an esteemed approach in the field of Quranic interpretation. As a dynamic and evolving discipline, the translation and interpretation of the Holy Quran constantly evolves, guided by the principles of Sharia and the contextual needs of the time. Among the earliest and most influential methods of interpretation is the analytical approach, which has been employed in numerous renowned exegeses such as Tafsir-al-Tabari, Tafsir Bahr al-Muhit, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, and others. A distinguishing feature of the analytical interpretation method is that commentators interpret Quranic verses in the order they appear in the Mus'haf (the written compilation of the Quran), comprehensively exploring each verse before proceeding to the next. Each interpreter adopts the analytical method according to their expertise and interests, often encompassing introductory remarks on the Surah, connections between verses, reasons for revelation, lexical meanings, juridical inferences, grammatical analysis, rhetorical and lexical nuances, scientific miracles, interpretations in light of contemporary sciences, and other relevant aspects. This research utilizes a descriptive and analytical approach, drawing upon scholarly books, academic articles, and the works of esteemed Islamic scholars who have made significant contributions to Quranic interpretation. Through this method, individuals can address their specific scholarly needs. Al-Mashhadani: 248-266). It is worth noting that other interpretive methods, such as the method of Tafsit Ijmali, Tafsir Mawzui, and Tafsir Moqarin, draw inspiration from the analytical interpretation of the Holy Quran. In conclusion, the analytical interpretation of the Holy Quran provides a comprehensive framework for understanding its profound messages. This method offers various stages and features that facilitate a deep and multifaceted analysis of the Quranic text. As an example, this paper includes an illustration of the analytical interpretation method from Tafsir Munir, authored by the esteemed scholar Dr. Wahba al-Zuhaili. It is hoped that this discussion and example will prove beneficial to readers in comprehending and appreciating the analytical interpretation approach.

Abstract:
Robert Seymour was celebrated enough in his day to become one of very few late Regency and early Victorian comic and satirical draughtsmen sufficiently visible to be traced through the magazines of the 1830s. His periodical contributions are, therefore, of considerable significance in trying to establish the patterns of work and maps of interconnected activity that were necessary to sustain the career of a jobbing draughtsman at this time. After contributing to <em>Bell’s Life</em> in London in the late 1820s, Seymour’s presence as a prolific magazine illustrator dates largely from the early 1830s. As well as a mass of jobbing illustrations that were produced for a remarkably diverse range of magazines. Seymour worked extensively for three significant and profusely illustrated magazines at this time — the <em>Looking Glass</em>, <em>Figaro in London</em>, and the <em>Comic Magazine</em>. The <em>Looking Glass</em> was published by Thomas McLean and sought to sustain an established tradition of political caricature through adapting it to a magazine format using the relatively new reprographic medium of lithography. <em>Figaro in London</em> was illustrated by vignette wood engravings, which were both vernacular and sophisticated at the same time. The <em>Comic Magazine</em>, another publication dependent on small wood-engraved images, sought to build on the growing popularity of song books and comic annuals. The diversity and prolixity of Seymour’s output at this time bears testimony to the extraordinary demands made on draughtsmen and engravers in the 1830s, and suggests something of the relentlessly innovative market place for humorous and satirical print at this time.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the illustrated book editions of the cultural and artistic heritage of the outstanding Ukrainian artist Mykola Semenovych Samokysh, which are stored in the Central Scientific Library. The purpose of the study is to study and disclose books and periodicals illustrated by the artist M. S. Samokish. The artist's paintings are stored in many museum collections in Ukraine and Russia and in galleries of various collectors, and graphic works, books and magazines decorated with artistic illustrations enrich the funds of many libraries. The Central Scientific Library of Karazin University preserves unique editions of the artist, which are currently a bibliographic rarity. The methodological basis of the study is the problem-chronological method, which allowed to trace the sequence of origin, formation and development of creative activity of M. S Samokish. This method allowed to study and analyze a specific creative work of an illustrator in a certain period of time. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the coverage of book-illustrative publications from the fund of the Central Scientific Library. This allows you to popularize the library fund as a whole and determines its scientific, cultural and historical value. A specific bibliological study reveals the personal contribution of M. S. Samokysh to the development of book art in Ukraine. Conclusions. M. S. Samokysh is known, above all, as an excellent master of the battle genre, for which he was awarded silver and gold medals and awarded the title of Academician of the Academy of Arts. Also, it should be noted that M. S. Samokysh took part in the preparation and creation of albums on Ukrainian art. This is a famous art publication "From Ukrainian antiquity" in 1900 and a rare album "Motives of Ukrainian ornament", which was published in the early XX century. The vast majority of Samokish's works were performed in his favorite battle genre. Thus, the result of Nikolai Semenovich's trip to the front of the Russo-Japanese War was the album "War 1904-1905: From the Diary of an Artist" published in 1908. . The magazine "The Great War in Images and Pictures 1914–1915" of 1915 included the artist's front-line materials. Drawings and watercolors from nature, made directly on the fronts, serve as a kind of historical document of the turbulent war years. Of particular interest are the many illustrated books on the history of the royal army, military regiments, the coronation of the royal family and others. The historical essay on the history of the Grand Ducal and tsarist hunts in Russia and Russia is fascinating. A multi-volume study of individual regions of the Russian Empire at the end of the XIX century is quite significant. Artistic and graphic elements of book decoration - vignettes, letters, screensavers, endings, which worked on the painter and graphic artist M. S. Samokish, not only reveal and supplement the content of books, but also make publications real works of art.

Abstract:
Impelled to seek relief from a “peccant chest” (L233) at the seaside, Christina Rossetti travelled to Hastings in December 1864, taking a carefully wrapped bundle of unfinished manuscript poetry with her. Throughout the winter until the following March, a series of letters to Cheyne Walk kept her brother Dante Gabriel abreast not only of her gradual recovery, but also of her efforts to complete her second book of poetry, two years after she had made a successful debut with Goblin Market. Shortly after her arrival, Rossetti reported that she was struggling to finish “The Prince's Progress,” the long narrative poem that was to lend its title to the new volume: [M]y Alchemist still shivers in the blank of mere possibility: but I have so far overcome my feelings and disregarded my nerves as to unloose the Prince, so that string wrapping paper may no longer bar his “progress.” Also I have computed pages of the altogether-unexceptionable, and find that they exceed 120: this cheers though not inebriates. Amongst your ousted I recognize sundry of my own favourites, which perhaps I may adroitly re-insert when publishing day comes round. . . . Meanwhile I have sent 3 (I hope) pot-boilers to Mac's Mag. (L233) In the past few decades, Rossetti's lifelong effort to see what critics have variously called “the divine spiritual essence of material beauty” (Harrison 56), the “moral and spiritual significance in physical signs” (Arseneau 279), and “the spiritual in the sensuous, the numinous in the material” (Kooistra, Illustration 38) has become a mainstay of Rossetti scholarship. This excerpt from her correspondence, in contrast, reveals her equally profound preoccupation with the materiality and economics of writing. Issues of textual ownership, authorial control, and literary marketability confronted Rossetti in the 1860s as her financial situation forced her to balance book publication with regular contributions to the periodical press, notably Macmillan's Magazine, the magazine owned by Rossetti's publisher Macmillan and Co., which carried more of her poetry than any other British periodical in the nineteenth century. These issues extended beyond Rossetti's personal dealings with Macmillan, however, shaping the material and interpretive consumption of her work throughout her career. This arc may be seen in the publication and adaptation history of one of her most popular poems, “A Birthday,” from its first appearance in Macmillan's Magazine in 1861 until her death. Over time, the poem underwent various types of mediation: reprints in gift books and poetry anthologies, musical adaptation, vocal performance, and quotations in fictional works. Finally, her reaction to the three parodies of her poems published in an 1888 comic magazine – particularly to “An Unexpected Pleasure,” the parody of “A Birthday” – demonstrate her perspective on the increased commodity value of the original poem.

Abstract:
Semantic Mashups constitute a relatively new genre of applications that illustrate the combination of the current trends of the Web, i.e. the Semantic Web and Web 2.0. The great benefit of Semantic mashups lies in the ability to aggregate different and heterogeneous data with rich semantic annotations and due to this, an additional ease of integration. In this paper, the authors attempt to outline the transition from conventional to semantic mashups, analyzing the former's limitations and identifying improvements and contributions which can come in with the advent of the later. Furthermore, the authors survey the background technologies on which semantic mashups are based, like Semantic Web Services and the process of data triplification. The authors also investigate the current trends and efforts put into developing tools and frameworks, which are designed to support users with little programming knowledge in semantic mashup application development, such as Semantic Pipes or Jigs4OWL. After presenting and illustrating the theoretical and technological background of this genre of mashups, the authors look into some use cases and systems. Among others, the authors present their mashup, called Books@HPClab, in which they introduce a personalized semantic service for mashing up information from different on-line bookstores.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of Vsevolod Rozhnyatovsky’s “Mirozhsky poems” (2013), which demonstrates the sacralization of the place described therein. The author shows how the title toponym exists in the cultural consciousness of the Pskovites (the name of the river is absorbed by the name of the temple, which has been turned into a museum). Its composition outlines a peculiar lyrical plot: the subtitles of the book indicate the author’s path from museum work through contact with the Christian religion and art to his own poetic creativity in line with the Christian idea of the Logos. The motif of leaving the temple allows the poet to spread the received in it “knowledge” about the creatureliness of the world to the entire city, which is perceived as a city-temple; the acquired poetic gift turns his book of poems into a kind of prayer for a person of the 20th century, shocked by the meeting with the Christian artistic tradition. The article pays particular attention to the specifics of the poetic ekphrasis, which represents the descriptions of the frescoes of the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Pskov Mirozhsky Monastery. There is the analysis of the position of the subject of the speech (inside the temple but at the same time inside the frescoes plot) based on the contributions of three poems containing the ekphrastic descriptions. This is seen as a kind of illustration to the Pavel Florensky’s ideas of about the icon and church art. The article also indicates to the connections of the 20th century author’s perception of frescoes with the 12th century icon-painting program, which reflects the theological controversy about the union of divine and human God the Son’s nature. The poet’s fascination with this topic attested to the relevance of hierotopy even for the end of the 20th century.

Children’s natural curiosity by everything around them is a premise for discovery. Natural phenomena such as the alternation between day and night, elements of nature such as the tree’s leaves and their shapes and colors, daily routines as sorting waste, raise many questions in children, stimulating them towards scientific literacy trough what is familiar to them and their personal life experiences. In the science children’s books, the concepts’ approach sometimes difficult its understanding by children, due to the used vocabulary, the lack of an appealing narrative, among other aspects. In turn, children’s literature books without any intention of promoting or developing ideas of science can, through their narrative and illustrations, in a more meaningful context for children, motivate the inquiring and the concepts’ exploration. This work results from a presentation session of the children’s book “From the outside to inside and from the inside to outside” to children of a Portuguese school of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, by the authors which are also the researchers, having as aim create an environment based on questioning activity, supported in the story narrative, and develop children’s divergent thinking in a context involving scientific ideas.

Abstract:
AbstractThe term “creative space” describes a relatively recent phenomenon of innovative workplace design. Such creative workspaces are becoming popular in industry and academia. However, the impact of specific spatial design decisions on creativity and innovation is not yet fully understood. This paper provides an overview of state-of-the-art research on creative work and learning environments. We conducted a systematic literature search within the Scopus database and identified a total of 73 relevant sources discussing creative spaces within academic, practice, and other innovation environments. Among the included sources are 51 academic publications and 22 sources from company research and illustrative coffee-table books. We analyzed the sources using three lenses of interest: (1) the types of theoretical and practical contributions that are provided, (2) the spatial characteristics that are suggested to be beneficial for creativity and innovation, and (3) the discussed potential of new technologies for designing or researching creative spaces. The results provide in-depth insight into the current state of research on the topic of creative spaces. Practitioners, educators, and researchers can use the presented overview to investigate the possible impact of creative workspace design and identify research gaps that can be filled by conducting further research in the field.

AbstractIn 1996, Andrew E. Steinmann proposed that integrity and faith, not theodicy and suffering, were the heart of the book of Job ("The Structure & Message of the Book of Job", VT 46, pp. 85-100). I do not dismiss the element of theodicy, but view the issue of integrity as critical to appreciating the book's split level setting (heaven and earth), its dual focus (divine and human), and its prose-poetry, frame-and-center, integration. Exchanges between Job and "friends" connect to the book's prologue as the human contribution to discussion of its earliest stated theme, human integrity. The epilogue's divine verdict (xlii 7, 8) brings closure upon this question which opens the book and provokes its drama. This essay focuses on the book's juxtaposition of Job and Eliphaz as illustrative of contrasting postures with regard to human integrity, a subject too long overshadowed, in Job scholarship, by questions on theodicy and suffering.

The influence of electronic and digital codes on children's literature represents one of the most interesting aspects of the artistic and literary productions of the last decades. Signs of the profound and irrevocable change that has taken place in children’s literature and in the ecosystem to be read of the electronic age are particular picturebooks, which reflect how even the printed book has drawn from the multilinear structures of the digital and from the expressive codes of the screens. In the context of this cultural mutation, the present contribution explores two illustrated books representative of the media technology mutation and integration, which, on the one hand, maintain the stability of reading on a traditional printed book, on the other, they contain the challenges of a "hyper-reading" experience.

Carlos S. Alvarado is a well-known specialist of the history of parapsychology, and also famous for his pedagogical skills mostly as an affiliate of the Parapsychology Foundation and the Alvarado and Zingrone Institute for Research and Education. Most of the material used in this book was already available online on his blog (https://carlossalvarado.wordpress.com) as it is a collection of previously published essays. I’m part of the people who publicly endorsed the book because Alvarado is clearly one of the most qualified authors able to deal with this topic, but here I will provide a complementary expertise based on my reading of the book and my own work on the history of French parapsychology (Evrard, 2016). (I’m also contributed to the Appendix E “Bibliography about and by Charles Richet with emphasis on psychic phenomena”, 119-132). Charles Richet (1850-1935) is a French physiologist (Nobel laureate 1913) who had contributed to many fields, among them psychology and psychical research. The book gathers six essays while trying to exhaustively cover these specific contributions through various glasses: a general overview of his interest in psychic phenomena (Chap. 1, 1-26), a discussion of his metapsychic autobiography (Chap. 2, 27-44), an analysis of his early ideas on mental suggestion and his pioneering use of probabilities in human sciences (Chap. 3, 45-54), his various attempts to create gateways between psychology and psychical research (Chap. 4, 55-66), a review of his masterpiece The traité de métapsychique (Chap. 5, 67-84), and a final comment about his own conclusions about what he learnt from psychical research and the survivalist hypothesis (Chap. 6, 85-96). The first four appendices cover small historical points as Richet’s séances with famous medium Leonara Piper (97-102), one of his observation of moving ectoplasm (103-104), a note about the term “ectoplasm” which he didn’t coin (105-106), and an extract from his Traité (107-118) about the scientific statute of “metapsychics”, his own term for parapsychology, in which we have a nice illustration of his clever and Hugolian expression style.

Abstract:
Francis Grose (1731-91) initiated the eighteenth-century's most extensive series of published illustrations of ancient monuments. A thousand plates with accompanying descriptions, based on his and others ‘views and researches, appeared in The Antiquities of England and Wales (1772-6, Supplement, 1777-87), of Scotland (1789-91) and of Ireland (1791-5). He combined the role of popularizer with original contributions to the study of folklore, slang and military antiquities, but has received little scholarly attention for several reasons. His own drawings are indifferent artistically, so he scarcely features in art history. His books and pictures were sold on his death, and no archive of his papers is known to survive. The largest collection—about 380 pictures given to the publisher and now in the possession of the Society of Antiquaries—are his reductions of views for the engraver to copy for The Antiquities of England and Wales. They yield little information on the circumstances of the original drawings. He did not sign his pictures, so many may survive without, or with wrong, attributions. Dudley Snelgrove, F.S.A. (1906-92) amassed much material by and on Grose, but published nothing and the pictures are now dispersed though his notes, lately presented to the Antiquaries, are a valuable quarry. For a century the Dictionary of National Biography has provided the authoritative biography, which relied on obituaries, contemporaries’ fond recollections and a few letters printed by John Nichols.

Abstract:
The main milestones of life and professional path of an outstanding surgeon of the 20th century Voyno-Yasenetsky (Archbishop Luka) are considered. In 1915, Voino-Yasenetsky published a book «Regional anesthesia» in Staint Petersburg with his own illustrations, and in 1916 he defended his doctoral dissertation in Moscow University on regional anesthesia: the thesis was awarded the prize of the University of Warsaw. In 1917-1930s he worked in Tashkent - the first doctor-surgeon of the city hospital, and from March 1917 - a chief doctor. Since 1920 Voyno-Yasenetsky became a Professor of topographical anatomy and operative surgery at newly established Turkestan University. Voyno-Yasenetsky made great contributions to practical surgery. In his honor several operation were named: resection of affected by purulent process in the sacroiliac joint, the posterior part of the Ilium (pelvic resection by Voyno-Yasenetsky), operation of excision of the affected skin and fatty tissue of the axillary fossa when multiple hidradenitis (Voyno-Yasenetsky operation), incision in the popliteal fossa, supplementing arthrotomy purulent chase (cut by Voyno- Yasenetsky). Also he worked on other problems of clinical surgery. Voyno-Yasenetsky invented the original closure method of the wound located on the periphery of the diaphragm (Voyno-Yasenetsky method). He proposed a new method of spleen mobilization and ligation of blood vessels during splenectomy (Voyno-Yasenetsky method). He described important for surgeons topographic- anatomical landmarks - the projection of the sciatic nerve on the skin back of thigh (Voyno-Yasenetsky line) and the place of exit of the sciatic nerve under the gluteal folds (Voyno-Yasenetsky point). For the books «Sketches of purulent surgery» (1943) and «Late resections of infected gunshot wounds of the joints» (1944) in 1946 he was awarded the Stalin prize of the first degree. Since 1946, in connection with the illness, he departed from surgical activity and before the end of his life he lived in Simferopol (Crimea).

Abstract:
[Purpose] Many recent conflicts in different places in the world are considered as a perfect illustration of the growing risks faced by media working in conflict zones. It is therefore important to call renewed attention to the fact that direct harms against the media and its role are illegal based on the principles of international humanitarian law, which is the law that regulates the conduct of war (jus in bello) and protects civilian persons and objects, as long as they are not making an effective contribution to military action. The role of media and its great value cannot be considered a legitimate target in conflicts. Respectively, the media also benefit from all measures that must be taken by the conflicting parties measures –not confined to them alone– such as the principle of proportionality and the obligation to give a warning. As of late, many books and articles have been addressing the media in the time of conflicts. They all appear to discuss it either from one perspective, or consider its role concerning one single issue, but not daring to dive too deeply into specific related issues to the media in a time of conflicts. The purpose of this paper is to present evidence on how media plays a role in armed conflicts so that can help to prevent insecurity and violent conflict, and contribute to peace and justice. It aims to help recognize the importance of media and its positive and negative potential about conflicts. [Methodology] The paper will examine the available literature on this subject specifically focusing on the challenges faced by media and underlining the knowledge gaps around media in armed conflicts. [Findings] We have directed ourselves to approach the topic from a different perspective. We hope to accomplish it, in part, by introducing the role of media in armed conflicts and whether it is still a good idea.

Abstract:
This article is a book review of Michael Belgrave, Merata Kawharu and David Williams (eds) Waitangi Revisited: Perspectives on the Treaty of Waitangi (Oxford University Press, Melbourne, 2005) (402 + xxi pages) NZ$65. The book looks at issues surrounding the Treaty of Waitangi 16 years after the publication of "Waitangi: Māori and Pākehā Perspectives of the Treaty of Waitangi". Although it can be difficult to find cogent and lucid expressions of contrary opinions on Treaty issues, Northover states that the book's attempts to provide different ideological perspectives are relatively successful. Other pieces are more akin to case studies, illustrating wider schemes and issues of significance. It is concluded that the book deserves to be read by a wide audience, and that the contributions in the collection reflect Treaty issues that remain (and will remain) prominent.

Abstract:
The Pashto language encompasses a rich array of legendary terminology, with numerous words employed by past leaders that include both mythological and metaphorical connotations. In addition to their surface-level significance, a significant proportion of phrases within the Pashto language are employed to convey a secondary, or intrinsic, meaning like ‘Diwali Xaro ‘Bird of wall’. If we explain this kind of term, (Diwali Shiro) means the beautiful girls of the neighborhood. De Aasman Kat, "The Sky Bed." When elucidating the word "De Aasman Kat," it denotes an individual who resides within a realm of fantasy, wherein they inhabit an imaginative and non-existent world, persistently engrossed in fanciful musings and reverie. This individual may exhibit a tendency to disregard the practicalities of existence and instead engage in a deep involvement with their imaginative realm. This behavior can be attributed to individuals seeking to avoid unpleasant realities or distressing experiences, or alternatively, it may stem from a desire to engage in creative endeavors and construct novel narratives and realms. Language serves as a significant tool for comprehension and communication, and folklore assumes a substantial role in the process of societal advancement. Significant contributions have been made in the domain of Pashto folklore, resulting in the compilation of many literary works. The motif has been observed in both poetic and prose literary works. The early and later works of Pashto literature encompass a plethora of folkloric compositions. Pashto grammar books serve as valuable resources for illustrating grammatical concepts, often incorporating elements of folklore within their textual content.

Abstract:
Writing and genre scholarship has become increasingly attuned to how various nontextual features of written genres contribute to the kinds of social actions that the genres perform and to the activities that they mediate. Even though scholars have proposed different ways to account for nontextual features of genres, such attempts often remain undertheorized. By bringing together Writing, Activity, and Genre Research, and Multimodal Interaction Analysis, the authors propose a conceptual framework for multimodal activity-based analysis of genres, or Multimodal Writing, Activity, and Genre (MWAG) analysis. Furthermore, by drawing on previous studies of the laboratory notebook (lab book) genre, the article discusses the rhetorical action the genre performs and its role in mediating knowledge construction activities in science. The authors provide an illustrative example of the MWAG analysis of an emergent scientist’s lab book and discuss its contributions to his increasing participation in medical physics. The study contributes to the development of a theoretically informed analytical framework for integrative multimodal and rhetorical genre analysis, while illustrating how the proposed framework can lead to the insights into the sociorhetorical roles multimodal genres play in mediating such activities as knowledge construction and disciplinary enculturation.

Abstract:
John Rae, Scottish by birth, and a Canadian-Hawaiian (i.e. of the Kingdom of Hawaii) by residence, lived in Canada for about twelve years before the publication of his only work of significance in economies' and for nine years before he started writing it (James 1965,). He titled his book Statement of Some New Principles on the Subject of Political Economy, Exposing the Fallacies of the System of Free Trade and of Some Other Doctrines Maintained in the “Wealth of Nations” (1834) (obviously not a very memorable or popular title). The book was first conceived as an appendix to a statistical study of an aspect of the Canadian economy but, as sometimes happens, took a life of its own, in which references to Canada became merely illustrative and less frequent than to England, France or even China.

Abstract:
Mortimer Frank (1874–1919) was an ophthalmologist in Chicago, Illinois. He published a number of papers on the history of medicine, and was secretary of the Chicago Society of the History of Medicine and editor of their Bulletin. His major contribution to the history of medicine relates to the history of anatomical illustration. The classic book on that subject had been published in 1852 in German by the physician and historian, Johann Ludwig Choulant (1791–1861). However, by Frank’s time this text was both out dated and out of print. Frank took on the tremendous project of translating Choulant’s German text into English as History and Bibliography of Anatomic Illustration in Its Relation to Anatomic Science and The Graphic Arts. He improved Choulant’s text with the results of his and other scholars’ research, greatly enlarging the text. Frank supplemented the original book with a biography of Choulant, essays on anatomists not considered in the original text, and an essay on the history of anatomical illustration prior to those authors discussed by Choulant. This book, now referred to as Choulant/Frank, has been reprinted several times, and is still useful as a reference in this field, though some of its research is now dated.

Moore, P. G. "Eric Fitch Daglish (1892–1966): naturalist, illustrator, author and editor." Archives of Natural History 38, no. 2 (October 2011): 229–41. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/anh.2011.0031.

Abstract:
Eric Fitch Daglish (1892–1966) was a naturalist by inclination, a free-lance author and editor in business and, by practice, a wood-engraver of high repute. Taught wood-engraving skills by Paul Nash, he was a close friend also of other famous engravers (John Nash, Eric Gill) within the Society of Wood Engravers. He applied these skills to illustrating his own books for popular audiences on topics ranging from flowers to birds, beasts and the English countryside. Fluent in German, he translated books from that language to supplement his income in the years succeeding the First World War. He is perhaps best known for his bird books: Woodcuts of British birds, The life story of birds and Birds of the British Isles, but was also a prolific writer about dogs. His oeuvre is examined, and his contribution compared with other contemporary bird artists who embraced wood-engraving techniques. A bibliography of his natural history works as author and as editor is included.
