Abstract:
This research is subjected to the documentation of Nirona, in Kutch, Gujarat. Nirona is web of various art forms- Rogan painting, copper bell, lacquer art, leather art, Weaving, practiced at one place, making it culturally very rich. Though it is blessed with a bunch of art forms, it is still facing survival problems. Thus, it is getting at the verge of extinction. This research aims at documenting these art forms and understanding the reason behind its declination. Also, architectural contributions for their survival and upliftment are analyzed and based on that new suggestions are made.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the new field of philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition. The research presented in this paper is part of an ongoing doctoral research concerning the connection between ethics and aesthetics in architecture. The connection between architecture and philosophy is not a novelty. Architectural theory has always looked up to philosophy for inspiration but only recently philosophers have started to study architecture in detail. Architectural theory is still a field that is in search of a better conceptual frame after the failure of the theoretical premises of the Modern Movement and the rise of the "theory speak". Architecture's features as a public art ask for a certain amount of objectivity. The philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition can contribute to a more objective conceptual frame. The principal concerns are familiar to those acquainted with continental philosophy: What makes architecture special among the arts? What is the essence of an architectural work? How we can better define architecture's social mission? But the way of answering them is different. The ethical dimension of architecture is one of the most debated subjects among architects in recent years. There are several contributions on the connection between ethics and aesthetics in the philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition. They have the potential to have an impact on architectural theory and practice.

Abstract:
The subject of this research is the art installation, a spatial creativity that arises in relation between art and architecture. In a more narrow definition, the subject of the research is installations created in the formative period of the 60s and 70s up to the present. As a ‘critical spatial practice’ art installations are conceived in the form of alternative proposals for settlements which enter the field of architectural design. Ideas concerning new sets of relations between the subject and a spatial order indicate the potential of the use of the concept of art installations in architectural design. The initial hypothesis is that art installations represent the articulation of a place of dialogue between art and architecture, which opens up a new field of research in architectural design. The aim of the research is to show the position of art installations as architectural projects. The applied methodological procedures approach architectural design in a manner of synthesizing the architecture and art in a new form of visual culture. The paper deals with the study of artistic concepts in terms of design, which emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to research and the importance of integrating the principles of art in the field of architectural design. The main contribution of this paper is reflected in the expansion of the problem and thematic framework of research on architectural design, contemporary art and their relation. Abstract:
Contribution of civil engineer Charles Carr to the development of Liepāja's Art Nouveau architecture is analysed in the article. Art Nouveau in Liepāja is one of the greatest values of architectural heritage of the city. Buildings of this style determine the cityscape in many places, but data on Liepāja's Art Nouveau architects until recent past were extremely sparse. Ch. Carr was known only as the author of the design of the building at Graudu iela 45. Two more his designs, including the one for the building at Graudu iela 44, were found during research. Analysis of planning principles, methods of artistic composition and architectural detailing of these works allowed identifying several other notable Liepāja Art Nouveau buildings as possible creations of Ch. Carr and to determine the place of this personality in the history of Latvian culture.

Abstract:
Recent social theory that stresses the ‘nonrepresentational’, the ‘more-than visual’, and the relationship between affect and sensation have tended to assume some kind of break or rupture from historical antecedents. Especially since the contributions of Crary and Jay in the 1990s, when it comes to perceiving the built environment the complexities of sensation have been partially obscured by the dominance of a static model of vision as the principal organizing modality. This article returns to some prior historical articulations of the significance of motility in perception, retracing pathways across art history, architectural theory and the history of neuroscience to argue for an alternative model based on the movement of the eye. Along with subsystems that deal with balance and orientation, I offer parallels between spatial motifs of the interior spaces of the body – labyrinths, vestibules, chambers – and those in artefacts and the built environment that contribute to the heightened physicality of the oculomotor subject.

Abstract:
The 20th Century Avant-Garde Movements broke with the traditional distinction of artistic disciplines in favour to an ambiguous space where limits are diffuse. Exhibition space played a relevant role in this sense as a laboratory where art object and spectator are together in interaction, getting to experiences that, in many cases, transcend from the exhibition to disciplinary Architecture. Through the analysis of the Proun Space of El Lissitzky, constructed in 1923, and some of the most relevant proposals of Neplasticist authors, focusing on the creative and experimental process, contributions from Painting to Architecture are established. Some of them, partially shaded by the hegemony of Modern Movement, have been incorporated to 20th Century architectural projects and they are a significant chapter about interdisciplinary creative processes.

Abstract:
The contemporary age is marked by the rapidly advanced digital revolution, unstoppable rise of computer technologies and omnipresence of technological advancements in all aspects of everyday life. In the information era, computer technologies have become pervasive, ubiquitous and dominant. Their hybridization with previously present media forms resulted in the emergence of a new and exuberant field of new media and technologies. New media is a hybrid field of computer based technological forms, which are used in contemporary practice, not only as tool, but also as an expressive medium. Because of the complex nature of new media, the field is extremely hybrid, positioned at the intersection of art, science and culture. Its emerged cultural paradigm is scientific culture, in which dominant characteristics are technological art and cultural forms, as well as information and techno society. In this overall context, architecture is not an isolated phenomenon. The new media have influenced the field of architecture too, offering new possibilities, features, design methodologies and principles for conceptualizing and developing architectural space. In architectural practice different modalities of the new media are being used. These modalities initiated the emergence of the field of new media architecture. The distinction of these state-of-the-art types of architectural space, together with the principles and concepts they rely on, were the main focus and main contribution of the research presented in this paper.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the contributions of the Mamluks to the architecture and development of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. The main discussion lays emphasis on two major issues: Making the Mosque in the Mamluk architectural image, and the maturation of architectural deviations. In order to make them more comprehensible, the two thrusts are preceded by a brief account of a religio-political context that existed prior to and at the time when the Mamluks started to assert their authority, both locally and internationally. In the sheer context of the architectural development of the Mosque, the Mamluks unmistakably showed why they are regarded as some of the greatest patrons of art and architecture in the history of Islamic civilization. But in terms of how they dealt with the prevalent architectural deviations, the Mamluks could be recognized both as victims of the established nonconformist architectural tendencies and trends, and as active protagonists in their further nurturing and spreading. Keywords: The Mamluks, the Prophet’s Mosque, Madinah, architectural deviations.

Abstract:
NcRNA represent most of primary transcripts RNA in higher eukaryotes and tune gene expression via diverse mechanisms. They adopt 3D structures composed at 70% by WC bp forming A-form helices linked by RNA motifs. We identified the pk-turn, a new RNA motif related to k-turns that allow for the formation of a bend of 60° between stems P16 and P17 from the bacterial RNaseP. Yet it features different sequence and structural requirements than k-turns. The 2nd ribozyme which got my attention is the LCrz inserted in GIR2, a group I intron. This twintron is observed in the pre-rRNA 18S of the small subunit of the eukaryoteD. iris. LCrz catalyzes a reaction equivalent to the first step of splicing by group II introns, but in a structural context related to group I introns. We solved the 2.5 Å crystal structure of the LCrz and confirmed the unexpected shape by means of SAXS experiments. This work emphasizes the relationship between structure and function in the evolution of ribozymes.

Abstract:
My paintings emerge from within a context best explained by reference to Nietzsche's perspectivism. That is an intellectual attitude that deprivileges rationalism and accommodates scepticism or unknowing as an acceptable starting point From this standpoint art/language can be seen as being in a state of becoming rather than as representing a state of being. This thesis aims to demonstrate, not only by a philosophical encounter with Giorgio de Chirico's work: ie. his use of myth, his Nietzschean perspectivism and his enigmatic interpretation of figuration, that the most helpful context and understanding of my work can be realied. De Chirico's art, like Nietzsche's philosophy seeks in its processes to explore the possible unity of Dionysian aesthetic force with the Apollonian. Neither Nietzsche nor de Chirico considered within a post-Socratic world that this unity was realizable. Nevertheless they both share in their respective art forms a need to represent the relentless struggle to enact the disjunction of the two aesthetic forces in a secular world. The artist’s enigmatic imagery is characterized by a consideration of appearance and reality and it is for this reason that the work was selected as a model for investigating the nature of enigma. His use of seemingly straightforward, ordinary images suggests a sense of accessibility, yet at the same time they are irreducible to knowing and my own image-making was greatly expanded by investigating these concerns. I am not arguing that de Chirico was influenced by Nietzsche but instead that Nietzsche's philosophical point of view and his use of poetic language to express these views lay in discovering the qualities and substance of the Dionysian spirit As well as working within a Nietzschean world-view set out in The Birth of Tragedy, de Chirico has also drawn on the Italian unification, specifically the Risorgimento and the lineage of these political and mythical figures were endemic to his art and they interface the with his use of the Apollonian-Dionysian disunity first explored by Nietzsche. The focus of the exegesis will be to present the poetic and philosophical use made of the latter in de Chirico’s art It is anticipated that this philosophical encounter with the aesthetic, social and political world of de Chirico will, not only assist in interpreting his life's work anew, but will also provide a context in which my paintings of enigma might be interpreted.

Kunasek, Kimberly Ann Oei. "Anne Graham Rockfellow: Who was she? What was her contribution to the history of architecture?" Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/278409.

Full text
Abstract:
Anne Graham Rockfellow, virtually unknown to history, deserves a place worthy of scholarly attention. Rockfellow's significance to the histories of American architecture, of Tucson, and of professional women is explored. She was the first woman architect academically trained at M.I.T. (the first recognized school of architecture in the United States). In the mid-1890s she made her first move to Tucson, Arizona, a growing southwestern town that already had a long history. When Rockfellow permanently relocated to Tucson in 1915, she was hired by the H. O. Jaastad architectural firm, where she remained until her retirement in 1938. In order to put Rockfellow in a historical context, her biography is juxtaposed with the biographies of some of her female contemporaries who also chose to pursue careers in the field of architecture. Her contributions to the architecture of Tucson and to the development of the Spanish Colonial Revival style are also examined.

Abstract:
Alexandre Brongniart was known for his work as an important geologist and as an administrator at the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, but his roles as art historian and museologist are overlooked. Brongniart created a holistic methodology taken directly from science and applied it to ceramic art of all cultures and eras. He had a uniquely modern perspective on time, world culture, and archeology. Brongniart wrote about the art of Asia and the Americas on an equal status with that of the Classical West at least fifty years before it became a mainstream idea. Brongniart integrated scientific principle and practice into the structure of the Sèvres Museum and a comprehensive set of books which includes Traité de Mineralogie avec des Applications aux Arts, Traité des Arts Ceramiques, and Description Methodique du Musée Ceramique de la Manufacture Royale de Porcelain de Sèvres. Numerous historians were influenced by Brongniart’s work, including Samuel Birch and Albert Jacquemart. Notably, the art historian Gottfried Semper refocused his ideas for Style in the Technical and Tectonic Arts after seeing the completed works of Brongniart. Although contemporary historians credit Semper with the development of a scientific approach to art history, Semper himself frequently acknowledged the importance of Brongniart’s work.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2001.
Page 135 blank.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 131-133).
This thesis examines the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, designed and executed between 1966 and 1972 by the architect Louis I. Kahn. This study responds to a series of design related questions raised in the author's mind upon visiting the Kimbell museum on June 22, 2000. The work will evaluate the buildings' major design elements, beginning with the overall site and building organization, and end with the relationship between structure, space and natural light. The building is documented with numerous photographs taken during my visit to illustrate its experiential aspects. This study examines how the Kimbell Art Museum prompts 'readings and re-readings,' associations, symbolisms, and meanings that may initially appear elusive, contradictory or even obscure. My analysis suggests that Louis Kahn designed the Kimbell to generate obscure readings, or to be more precise, he utilized ambiguous design features capable of being understood in two or more possible senses. My analysis also raises questions such as, 'What types of ambiguity are employed in this museum, and why?', and 'How does the Kimbell Art Museum as both building and experience compare to Kahn's stated design goals?' The lens through which this examination takes place is my own experience of the building, tempered by an examination of the building's documentation compared to what Kahn wrote, sketched and built. This project aims to offer plausible insights into the building'S numerous, seemingly ambiguous design features. The process of reading and re-reading the Kimbell reveals elusive aspects of the building that to date, have not been adequately considered and articulated. The object of this study is twofold: first, enhance understanding and appreciation of Louis 1.

Abstract:
The importance of place—as a unique spatial identity—has been recognized since antiquity. Ancient references to the ‘genius loci’, or spirit of place, evoked not only the location of a distinct atmosphere or environment, but also the protection of this location, and implicitly, its making and construction. This volume examines the concept of place as it relates to architectural production and building knowledge in early modern Europe (1400-1800). The places explored in the book’s ten essays take various forms, from an individual dwelling to a cohesive urban development to an extensive political territory. Within the scope of each study, the authors draw on primary source documents and original research to demonstrate the distinctive features of a given architectural place, and how these are related to a geographic location, social circumstances, and the contributions of individual practitioners. The essays underscore the distinct techniques, practices and organizational structures by which physical places were made in the early modern period.

Abstract:
Being a social presence, people participate in social life in the public spaces of the city. In these areas, they are in perceptual and physical contact with each other and get the opportunity to socialize. Social life culture contributes to urban culture and urban identity while keeping communities together. Cities creates areas for people to express themselves outside of their basic needs. The art used in the expression of an emotion, design and beauty has been included in our socio-cultural life in public spaces over time. Public art, which provides social, physical, environmental and economic contributions to the society and the city, is a manifestation of a multi-layered and multi-dimensional expression that includes different representations. Public art representations are important urban images and are the sensory components of collective memory. Today, in the process where the cities start to look alike, public art representations identified with the place make sense of the space and contribute to the identity of the city. In our study, the approach of landscape architecture to this subject will be evaluated by making important public art representations and city readings.

Abstract:
Conservation and enhancement of ruined fortified systems in Tanaro Valley (Piedmont)The contribution reports on a research concerning the preparatory investigation of some fortified systems of Tanaro Valley (Piedmont) in view of their restoration. The research highlighted the strong connection between the castles and the memory of events and characters that were linked to these architectures; the relationship between landscape and ruins that, today, represents a potential resource for the territory; the willingness of local authorities to improve knowledge, protection and enhancement of this heritage; the need to investigate theoretical and methodological issues and define the proper procedures for the conservation, restoration, safeguard, maintenance and management of a widespread and vulnerable heritage. The study, taking advantage of interdisciplinary contributions, used innovative instruments for the survey and monitoring of this heritage, as well as graphic and digital restitution techniques to propose to the scientific community –and communicate to the native population– the interventions of restoration, conservation, enhancement and management of these fortified systems. The research demonstrates that particular attention has to be paid to these less-known historical architectures that can however contribute, as effectively as the most famous and eye-catching fortification systems, to the political and social development and to the historical identity whose recognition, preservation and valorization are strongly hoped for.

The castle of Iznájar and the castilian remodelling of king Pedro I (1362-1368)This paper presents a unique case of castilian remodelling of an islamic fortress, the castle of Iznájar, conquered by Pedro I between 1362 and 1366, with the clear intention of staying in the territory. For that purpose, defensive improvements were introduced, wich are clearly identified in the context of the fortified compound. This episode, well bounded in time, allows to recognize the Castilian contributions to the Nasrid defensive achitecture.

Abstract:
New contributions on the chronology of the preserved remains of the medieval city walls of Almeria (Spain)The medieval city walls of Almeria have abundant references in Arabic sources and numerous preserved remains, either in all its elevation, or as small archaeological remains on the current slope and even under the ground. This circumstance has given rise to a lot of scientific literature on the chronology of each of the different existing precincts: Alcazaba, Medina, suburbs and outer enclosure. The problem lies in the fact that, since its foundation in the tenth century until the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489 and its reuse until the mid-nineteenth century, the medieval walls have undergone various repairs, extensions and reconstructions. In order to provide greater chronological precision, from the School of Arab Studies (CSIC), a Project of the State Research Plan was requested, which was granted with reference HAR2015-71609-P. It has allowed to make radiocarbon dating of wood and other building materials of the walls, in combination with studies of construction, metrological, historical techniques and restorations carried out since the mid-twentieth century. All this has allowed us to contribute new hypotheses about the chronology of the preserved remains, many of which are much more recent than the foundational walls that they have replaced.

Abstract:
High Performance Computing (HPC) has become ubiquitous for simulations in the industrial context. To identify the requirements for integration of HPC-relevant data and processes a survey has been conducted concerning the German car manufacturers and service and component suppliers. This contribution presents the results of the evaluation and suggests an architecture concept to integrate data and workflows related with CAE and HPC-facilities in PLM. It describes the state of the art of HPC-applications within the simulation domain. Intensive efforts are currently invested on CAE-data management. However, an approach to systematic data management of HPC does not exist. This study states importance of an integrating approach for data management of HPC-applications and develops an architectural framework to implement HPC-data management into the existing PLM landscape. Requirements on key functionalities and interfaces are defined as well as a framework for a reference information model is conceptualized.

Abstract:
Aontia: an ancient toponym from the Aragon mapsThe Aragon geographical maps represent the territory of the ancient Kingdom of Naples. they date back to the second half of the fifteenth century, probably some of them or some copies were subsequently modified or updated. These ancient maps were rediscovered about thirty years ago in the State Archives of Naples and in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, and they have been under study for some years. They are unfortunately still little used in the scientific field, although several contributions have demonstrated their validity as an investigation tool thanks to their undoubted information potential. In fact, thanks to the very high degree of characterization of these maps it is possible to advance hypotheses and considerations of a historical-archaeological nature of the territories they represent. It is often toponymic analysis that offers insights and guides the early stages of research: toponyms relating to natural and anthropic elements inform about landscapes rich of medieval and classical references. The case study proposed here relates to the toponym Aontia, located on the Aragon maps near the centers of the Basilicata of Cirigliano and Gorgoglione. It is a place currently unidentified and not attested in any medieval or modern source; its toponym may refer to some references relating to an epithet of the well-known Greek divinity Artemis and to the presence of a sanctuary dedicated to it or to an ancient settlement. Starting from the analysis of the toponym Aontia, a localization proposal will be carried out based on the etymological and historical study, on the topographic survey and on the remote sensing analysis.

Abstract:
Historical research report on the external architectural surfaces of the fortress of San LeoThe hinterland of Rimini is characterized by the presence of many castles, but the fortress of San Leo is certainly the most representative because of its position and the different constructive contributions that over time have updated its appearance and military functions. Cited by Dante and Machiavelli for the impervious nature on which it stands, its origin dates back to the early Middle Ages. It was rehashed following the imprint of Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the fifteenth century, restored by Giuseppe Valadier at the end of the eighteenth century and converted to a prison in 1631. A peculiarity that makes the studies on the fortress of San Leo absolutely interesting is the treatment of the external architectural surfaces of which there is ample documentation in the historical archives and of which there are multiple uses in the various areas of the factory; the research aims to offer useful knowledge for the subsequent conservation and restoration project. The theme, completely original, arises from indirect investigations of a documentary and iconographic nature, conducted at the State Archives of Pesaro, Florence, Rome, the Central State Archive and the Vatican Secret Archive, which repeatedly refer in the accounting of works, starting from the seventeenth century, the execution of plasters executed outside the monument. The interpretative tension of the archival documents and the drawings continued by looking for a direct comparison between historical information and materiality of the fortress, in order to identify a correspondence between historical data and constructive reality. It emerges clearly that the external surfaces of many parts of the fortress were treated and finished with plaster since its origins, probably due to the exposure to atmospheric agents; therefore a rethinking of what is reported in the literature is necessary both in terms of interpretative profile of the fortress, and about how its image was perceived over the centuries.

Abstract:
Neural systems offer high predictive accuracy but are plagued by long training times and low interpretability. We present a simple neural architecture for recommender systems that lifts several of these shortcomings. Firstly, the approach has a high predictive power that is comparable to state-of-the-art recommender approaches. Secondly, owing to its simplicity, the trained model can be interpreted easily because it provides the individual contribution of each input feature to the decision. Our method is three orders of magnitude faster than general-purpose explanatory approaches, such as LIME. Finally, thanks to its design, our architecture addresses cold-start issues, and therefore the model does not require retraining in the presence of new users.

Abstract:
As an emerging field, Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) aims to reduce or eliminate manual operations that require expertise in machine learning. In this paper, a graph-based architecture is employed to represent flexible combinations of ML models, which provides a large searching space compared to tree-based and stacking-based architectures. Based on this, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to search for the best architecture, where the mutation and heredity operators are the key for architecture evolution. With Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, the proposed approach can automate the workflow of machine learning. On the PMLB dataset, the proposed approach shows the state-of-the-art performance compared with TPOT, Autostacker, and auto-sklearn. Some of the optimized models are with complex structures which are difficult to obtain in manual design.

Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building blocks: The ultimate aim should be to build rich, detailed and testable narratives situated within a European context, and addressing phenomena from the longue durée to the short-term over international to local scales. Chronological control is essential to this and effective dating strategies are required to enable generation-level analysis. The ‘serendipity factor’ of archaeological work must be enhanced by recognising and getting the most out of information-rich sites as they appear. o There is a pressing need to revisit the archives of excavated sites to extract more information from existing resources, notably through dating programmes targeted at regional sequences – the Western Isles Atlantic roundhouse sequence is an obvious target. o Many areas still lack anything beyond the baldest of settlement sequences, with little understanding of the relations between key site types. There is a need to get at least basic sequences from many more areas, either from sustained regional programmes or targeted sampling exercises. o Much of the methodologically innovative work and new insights have come from long-running research excavations. Such large-scale research projects are an important element in developing new approaches to the Iron Age.  Daily life and practice: There remains great potential to improve the understanding of people’s lives in the Iron Age through fresh approaches to, and integration of, existing and newly-excavated data. o House use. Rigorous analysis and innovative approaches, including experimental archaeology, should be employed to get the most out of the understanding of daily life through the strengths of the Scottish record, such as deposits within buildings, organic preservation and waterlogging. o Material culture. Artefact studies have the potential to be far more integral to understandings of Iron Age societies, both from the rich assemblages of the Atlantic area and less-rich lowland finds. Key areas of concern are basic studies of material groups (including the function of everyday items such as stone and bone tools, and the nature of craft processes – iron, copper alloy, bone/antler and shale offer particularly good evidence). Other key topics are: the role of ‘art’ and other forms of decoration and comparative approaches to assemblages to obtain synthetic views of the uses of material culture. o Field to feast. Subsistence practices are a core area of research essential to understanding past society, but different strands of evidence need to be more fully integrated, with a ‘field to feast’ approach, from production to consumption. The working of agricultural systems is poorly understood, from agricultural processes to cooking practices and cuisine: integrated work between different specialisms would assist greatly. There is a need for conceptual as well as practical perspectives – e.g. how were wild resources conceived? o Ritual practice. There has been valuable work in identifying depositional practices, such as deposition of animals or querns, which are thought to relate to house-based ritual practices, but there is great potential for further pattern-spotting, synthesis and interpretation. Iron Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report v  Landscapes and regions:  Concepts of ‘region’ or ‘province’, and how they changed over time, need to be critically explored, because they are contentious, poorly defined and highly variable. What did Iron Age people see as their geographical horizons, and how did this change?  Attempts to understand the Iron Age landscape require improved, integrated survey methodologies, as existing approaches are inevitably partial.  Aspects of the landscape’s physical form and cover should be investigated more fully, in terms of vegetation (known only in outline over most of the country) and sea level change in key areas such as the firths of Moray and Forth.  Landscapes beyond settlement merit further work, e.g. the use of the landscape for deposition of objects or people, and what this tells us of contemporary perceptions and beliefs.  Concepts of inherited landscapes (how Iron Age communities saw and used this longlived land) and socal resilience to issues such as climate change should be explored more fully.  Reconstructing Iron Age societies. The changing structure of society over space and time in this period remains poorly understood. Researchers should interrogate the data for better and more explicitly-expressed understandings of social structures and relations between people.  The wider context: Researchers need to engage with the big questions of change on a European level (and beyond). Relationships with neighbouring areas (e.g. England, Ireland) and analogies from other areas (e.g. Scandinavia and the Low Countries) can help inform Scottish studies. Key big topics are: o The nature and effect of the introduction of iron. o The social processes lying behind evidence for movement and contact. o Parallels and differences in social processes and developments. o The changing nature of houses and households over this period, including the role of ‘substantial houses’, from crannogs to brochs, the development and role of complex architecture, and the shift away from roundhouses. o The chronology, nature and meaning of hillforts and other enclosed settlements. o Relationships with the Roman world
