Abstract:
Organizations have always been dependent on communication, information, technology and their management. The development of information technology has sped up the importance of management information systems, which is an emerging discipline combining various aspects of informatics, information technology, and business management. Understanding the impact of information on today’s organizations requires technological and managerial views, which are both offered by management information systems. Business management is not only about generating greater returns and using new technologies for developing businesses to reach future goals. Business management also means generating better revenue performance if plans are diligently followed. It is part of business management to have an ear to the ground of global economic trends, changing environmental conditions and preferences, as well as the behavior of value chain partners. While, until now, business management and management information systems are mostly treated as independent fields, this publication takes an interest in the cooperation of the two. Its contributions focus on both research areas and practical approaches, in turn showing novelties in the area of enterprise and business management. Main topics covered in this book are technology management, software engineering, knowledge management, innovation management and social media management. This book adopts an international view, combines theory and practice, and is authored for researchers, lecturers, students as well as consultants and practitioners.

Abstract:
This article provides an overview of the key insights resulting from recent international business research on the interactions between location advantages and the competitiveness of multinational enterprises (MNEs). It consists of four main sections. First, the evolution of the location advantage concept in the international economics literature is discussed. Here, it appears that the international economics literature has substantially broadened its analytical scope in the last few decades. However, the field of international business research had gone even further in its analysis of the interactions between location and MNE competitiveness because of its in-depth focus on the actual behaviour of MNEs. The complex nature of location advantages for MNEs is discussed in more detail in the second section. The third section describes the intellectual foundations of a spatial analysis of MNE activities. Finally, the fourth section discusses the relative contribution of home country specific advantages (CSAs) and host CSAs to MNE competitiveness.

Abstract:
After the Waldock Report, OUP began a process of gradual modernization that resulted in changes to its systems of business administration and corporate structure. Manufacturing and in-house printing became less profitable and were eventually discontinued, and emphasis shifted to product marketing, international business, and corporate management. The Press maintained throughout this change its traditional learned values in academic and trade publishing and the Delegates continued to play a significant role in decision-making. By the 1990s OUP had reinvented itself as a modern publishing enterprise and was able to exploit new opportunities in digital publishing and the global book trade. The chapter considers in detail the process of modernization through an analysis of business structure, annual surpluses, and book sales, and the contribution of key individuals, while placing OUP in the context of the wider UK and international publishing world.

Reiser, Dana Brakman, and Steven A. Dean. The Social Enterprise Trust Deficit. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190249786.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explains why social enterprises have more difficulty gaining access to capital than conventional businesses do. It begins with the insight that law lends both for-profits and nonprofits the stability they need to raise capital; legal doctrine and enforcement mechanisms combine to reassure donors and investors that their contributions to standard businesses and charities will be well spent. Using the tools of game theory, the chapter then describes the more challenging assurance problem faced by social enterprise founders and investors. For either an entrepreneur or investor to commit capital to the venture, each must trust the other to remain faithful to both of its dual missions—and particularly to be willing to trade more social good for lower financial returns. The chapter concludes by describing why neither traditional for-profit and nonprofit law nor the first-generation of social enterprise law satisfactorily bridge this trust deficit.

Jakob, Mark, Nina Kleinöder, and Christian Kleinschmidt, eds. Security and Insecurity in Business History. Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783748924579.

Full text
Abstract:
Business history has so far examined the ‘security’ of enterprises primarily from the perspective of risk. The contributions in this volume apply the approach of historical security studies to business history and examine cases of dynamic historical negotiations of security since the late 19th century. In line with the assumptions of historical security research, we assume that the meaning of ‘security’ was negotiated in concrete historical situations and therefore cannot be explained solely from businesses’ focus on market risks. Rather, their perception of risk and danger was governed by the historically changing ‘grammar of security’. With contributions by Marcus Böick, Christian Kleinschmidt, Mark Jakob, Sabine Pitteloud, Kristin Stanwick Bårnås, Christian Marx, Ole Sparenberg, Sascha Brünig and Eva Schäffler.
