Abstract:
This review focuses on how covert attention modulates perception. It explains why attention is considered a selective process, the constructs of covert attention, and spatial endogenous and exogenous attention. This review includes the effects of spatial attention on discriminability and appearance in tasks mediated by contrast sensitivity and spatial resolution.

Umphrey, Heidi R. Emerging Breast Imaging Technologies. Edited by Christoph I. Lee, Constance D. Lehman, and Lawrence W. Bassett. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190270261.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Emerging breast imaging technologies may provide improved care across the entire breast cancer care continuum; however, assessment of these technologies and their added value will require further development and research. Contrast-enhanced mammography was first described in 1985, utilizing digital subtraction angiography of the breast. Molecular techniques in breast imaging are expanding as advances in technology allow for decreased radiotracer dose and reveal high sensitivity for the detection of breast cancers. Molecular breast imaging (MBI) tools may have a role as we develop personalized breast imaging protocols based on risk. This chapter, appearing in the section on breast cancer overview, describes the new emerging technologies in breast imaging, including contrast-enhanced spectral mammography and molecular breast imaging.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the connection between knowledge and counterfactual states of affairs—and the connection between the semantics of knowledge ascriptions and that of sentences expressing counterfactual conditionals. It argues that each ought to be considered as a kind of context-sensitive modal, and develops a close connection between the corresponding modal bases. The result implies, contrary to contemporary orthodoxy, that sensitivity is indeed a necessary condition for knowledge: to know that p on the basis of some evidence, one must be such that if p were false, one wouldn't believe that p on the basis of that evidence. Apparent counterexamples to this condition can be explained away as depending on equivocal arguments.

Abstract:
Vision is the primary source of information about the environments in which birds live. But vision is not ‘all-seeing’; it is subject to many constraints, trade-offs, and compromises. Furthermore, the basic components of eyes (optics, image analysing systems, and eye positions) have been subject to intense and persistent natural selection which has resulted in eyes whose capacities are tuned in many and subtle ways to the perceptual challenges posed by life in different environments. Colour vision, spatial resolution, contrast sensitivity, absolute sensitivity, and visual fields all differ markedly between species. Even two birds with eyes that appear very similar may have quite different bird’s eye views, and all birds have a different world view from our own. Knowledge of these differences is vital for understanding the behaviours of birds. While vision provides key information only rarely is it sufficient to guide behaviour, information from other senses must come into play.

Full text
Abstract:
Computed tomography (CT)–guided selective cervical nerve root blocks, particularly in the dorsal/posterior access, are sensitive, specific, efficacious, and safe. If performed with a lateral/anterolateral access, the CT-fluoroscopic technique with real-time visualization should be chosen. In comparison to fluoroscopy-guided nerve root blocks, CT guidance offers a more precise visualization of the contrast agent. While the advantages of CT guidance seem to outweigh the slightly higher exposure to radiation, this specific topic is debatable and requires additional scientific inquiry. Comparative studies are needed to address the sensitivity, specificity, efficacy, complication rates, and radiation exposure of CT- and fluoroscopy-guided cervical nerve root blocks.

Kotzmann, Jane. Theoretical Approaches to Higher Education. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190863494.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores two general theoretical models that are used to frame higher education policy. Under the market-based approach to higher education teaching and learning, higher education is provided through the free market. This approach is based on the principles of competition, privitisation, and absence of government intervention. In contrast, a human rights-based approach to higher education seeks to translate the human right to higher education and operationalise it. The principles of a human rights-based approach include integration and mainstreaming of human rights norms, accountability, non-discrimination and equality, participation, dignity, interdependence and indivisibility, and cultural sensitivity. The chapter evaluates the theoretical effectiveness of these two models.

Webster, Michael A. Blur Adaptation and Induction. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0110.

Full text
Abstract:
The image on the retina is always blurred because of optical aberrations of the eye. Yet typically the world does not “look” blurred, and although the acuity of the eye varies dramatically from the center of gaze to the periphery, the outside world generally “feels” focused throughout the visual field. This perception of focus is one of many illusions where the brain appears unaware of its own imperfections. The perceived focus of an image can be strongly biased by prior adaptation to a blurred or sharpened image or by simultaneous contrast from a blurred or sharpened surround. Adaptation to blur can selectively adjust to the patterns of blur introduced by different optical aberrations and may reflect adjustments that help compensate spatial perception for the optical and neural sensitivity limits of the visual system.

Full text
Abstract:
Electronic instrument panel displays systems covers the many technical considerations of instrument panel display systems including brightness, contrast, temperature sensitivity, space requirements, color capabilities and human factors concepts. As part of the Progress in Technology Electronics Series, this book contains 40 technical papers written in the last eleven years on the progress of instrument panel displays and their corresponding electronic systems. Papers are grouped according to display technology and present the most recent advances in that area plus several of historical interest. Electronic Instrument Panel Display Systems is divided into ten sections: vacuum fluorescent displays; fluorescent indicator panels; liquid crystal displays; electroluminescent displays; light emitting diode displays; electroluminescent displays; light emitting diode displays; cathode ray tube displays; head up displays; virtual and holographic displays; reconfigurable displays; and human factors considerations.

Palmusaari, Jussi. For Revolt. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350273993.

Full text
Abstract:
For Revolt: Rancière, Abstract Space and Emancipation presents an interpretation of Rancière’s uncompromising view of emancipation, drawing on its invariably rational and Kantian-moralist basis. Tracing a logic of abstract or empty space in all of Rancière’s work, it contrasts the prevailing tendencies to emphasise Rancière’s sensitivity to evolving historical forms and changing regimes of sensibility. Overturning the meaning of Rancière’s interest in the sensible enables the capture of the object of his thought as a revolt against the reality accorded to ordered temporalities and forms of appearance as such. In making its argument, For Revolt reconstructs Rancière’s relations to some of the crucial, yet unexplored, politico-historical frameworks of his thought, such as the Cultural-Revolutionary Maoism and the French Revolution, offering a fresh perspective to these revolutionary paradigms. In contrast to dominating views, the book makes a case for a fundamentally positive influence of Louis Althusser’s philosophy on Rancière’s thought. It develops an immanent critique of Rancière through a discussion of his relation to Marx, spanning its coverage to Rancière’s hitherto undiscussed early student work. It distils elements in Rancière’s thought which resist its own defining orientation, opening ways to alternative developments. Through a critical discussion of Rancière in relation to other contemporary accounts of revolt and resistance, the book addresses the present predicament of emancipatory politics, its emphasis on the actualities of here and now and its difficulties to envisage programmatic realisations of radically alternative futures.
