Haar, Alisa, and Dirk Schoenaers. Francophone Literature in the Low Countries (1200-1600). NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463721080.

Full text
Abstract:
In late medieval and early modern times, books, as well as the people who produced and read (or listened to) them, moved between regions, social circles, and languages with relative ease. Yet, in the multilingual Low Countries, francophone literature was both internationally mobile and firmly rooted in local soil. The five contributions collected in this volume demonstrate that while in general issues of 'otherness' were resolved without difficulty, at other times (linguistic) differences were perceived as a heartfelt reality. Texts and books in French, Latin, and Dutch were as interrelated and mobile as their authors. As awareness of the francophone literature of the medieval and early modern Low Countries continues to grow, texts in all three languages will be ever more firmly connected in an intricate and multilingual weave.

Abstract:
Teylers Museum was founded in 1784 and soon thereafter became one of the most important centres of Dutch science. The Museum’s first director, Martinus van Marum, famously had the world’s largest electrostatic generator built and set up in Haarlem. This subsequently became the most prominent item in the Museum’s world-class, publicly accessible, and constantly growing collections. These comprised scientific instruments, mineralogical and palaeontological specimens, prints, drawings, paintings, and coins. Van Marum’s successors continued to uphold the institution’s prestige and use the collections for research purposes, while it was increasingly perceived as an art museum by the public. In the early twentieth century, the Nobel Prize laureate Hendrik Antoon Lorentz was appointed head of the scientific instrument collection and conducted experiments on the Museum’s premises. Showcasing Science: A History of Teylers Museum in the Nineteenth Century charts the history of Teylers Museum from its inception until Lorentz’ tenure. From the vantage point of the Museum’s scientific instrument collection, this book gives an analysis of the changing public role of Teylers Museum over the course of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:

Shiva, Vandana. Soil, Not Oil. Zed Books Ltd, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350222663.

Full text
Abstract:
‘One of the world’s most prominent radical scientists.’—The Guardian This book is classic of the environmental movement. In it, Vandana Shiva envisions a world beyond our current dependence on fossil fuels and globalization, and makes the compelling case that food crises, oil dependency and climate change are all inherently interlinked. Any attempt to solve one without addressing the others is therefore doomed to failure. Condemning industrial agriculture and biofuels as recipes for ecological and economic disaster, Shiva instead champions small independent farmers. What is needed most, in a time of hunger and changing climates, are sustainable, biologically diverse farms that are better able to resist disease, drought and flooding. Calling for a return to local economies and small-scale agriculture, Shiva argues that humanity’s choice is a stark one: we can either continue to pursue a market-centred approach, which will ultimately make our planet unliveable, or we can instead strive for a people-centred, oil-free future, one which offers a decent living for all. This edition features a new introduction by the author, in which she outlines recent developments in ecology and environmentalism, and offers new prescriptions for the environmental movement.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The activities of the eight musicians on New Year’s Day 1918 reflected their changed status in the musical world. Kreisler and Schumann-Heink had withdrawn from the stage, and Muck was under intense pressure to follow suit. Damrosch and Samaroff continued to be popular with audiences, but the climate of a country at war made their positions tenuous. Nick LaRocca’s Original Dixieland Jazz Band was the toast of New York after being virtually unknown a year earlier. Keppard and the Original Creole Band continued to travel the vaudeville circuits, essentially where they had been a year earlier. Jim Europe’s first concert on French soil set the stage for the introduction of jazz to Europe.

Hazelton, Pam, and Brian Murphy. Understanding Soils in Urban Environments. CSIRO Publishing, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101432.

Full text
Abstract:
Soil properties such as water retention, salinity and acidity are not just issues for agriculture and forestry. They are equally as significant in creating environmental and structural problems for buildings and other engineering works. As an increasing proportion of the world's population is living in cities, and building and related infrastructure development continues, these problems assume ever-greater importance. In addition, existing works contribute to urban soil erosion and pollution as well as increased levels of urban runoff. Understanding Soils in Urban Environments explains how urban soils develop, change and erode. It describes their physical and chemical properties and focuses on specific soil problems, such as acid sulfate soils, that can cause environmental concern and also affect engineering works. It also addresses contemporary issues such as green roofs, urban green space and the man-made urban soils that plants may need to thrive in. It provides a concise introduction to all aspects of soils in urban environments and will be extremely useful to students in a wide range of disciplines, from soil science and urban forestry and horticulture, to planning, engineering, construction and land remediation, as well as to engineers, builders, landscape architects, ecologists, planners and developers.

Abstract:
The controversy over the theology of Arius was really over how to imagine a connection between a wholly transcendent God and the present world. Arius saw in Jesus a mediator, divinely generated to connect the world with God. The bishops at Nicaea asserted that this Son of God is of one substance with God his Father. Marcellus of Ancyra insisted that Father and Son cannot be numerically distinct agents, but different historical personifications of one transcendent being. Eusebius of Caesaraea, originally sympathetic to Arius, continued after Nicaea to insist that the Son is divine only by a privileged participation in God’s life, linking God to creation by taking an intermediate position between them. Athanasius developed and nuanced the position of Nicaea, emphasizing that only because the Son is fully God, yet personally present in the created order, can he be a source of life and incorruptibility for humanity.

Whelan, Brett, and James Taylor. Precision Agriculture for Grain Production Systems. CSIRO Publishing, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643107489.

Full text
Abstract:
Precision Agriculture (PA) is an approach to managing the variability in production agriculture in a more economic and environmentally efficient manner. It has been pioneered as a management tool in the grains industry, and while its development and uptake continues to grow amongst grain farmers worldwide, a broad range of other cropping industries have embraced the concept. This book explains general PA theory, identifies and describes essential tools and techniques, and includes practical examples from the grains industry. Readers will gain an understanding of the magnitude, spatial scale and seasonality of measurable variability in soil attributes, plant growth and environmental conditions. They will be introduced to the role of sensing systems in measuring crop, soil and environment variability, and discover how this variability may have a significant impact on crop production systems. Precision Agriculture for Grain Production Systems will empower crop and soil science students, agronomy and agricultural engineering students, as well as agronomic advisors and farmers to critically analyse the impact of observed variation in resources on crop production and management decisions.
