We live in a time when the presence of a multitude of crises is a manifest and worrying reality. Organizational crises are growing steadily, thus amplifying the challenges that companies face. The present work focuses on the study of negative consumer reactions in contexts that trigger organizational crises, specifically reputation crises and product damage crises. The main objective of this research is to better identify the psychological mechanisms underlying coping strategies leading to revenge and consumer avoidance. Based on a review of the literature and the results of two qualitative exploratory studies, an integrative model has been developed and tested to examine the influence of crisis trigger contexts (crisis type and historical) on the psychological process, including individual affective, motivational and behavioral responses, as well as the consequences for consumer post-crises attitudes and purchasing intentions. After validating the measurement scales on a sample of 358 participants, a second data collection was carried out as part of an online experiment using the scenario method, with the participation of 670 individuals from two different cultural backgrounds, raising the total sample to 1028 participants. The results confirmed direct structural relationships and highlighted the moderating role of the culture and perception of crisis response strategies. This research contributes to existing literature by expanding the scope of revenge to organizational crises, which have so far been mainly studied in the context of failing services. Management implications are presented

This dissertation focuses on the institutional and political reasons behind the severity and length of the crises that the State of California went through during the first decade of the 2000s. After several years of economic growth that generated significant budget surpluses, several crises hit the Golden State. The first started after the bursting of the dotcom bubble in 2000 and was directly followed by a power crisis resulting from a failed deregulation of the supply chain system. This coincided with the beginning of an era of budget deficits that would last for a decade. Finally, this time period had seen the worst crisis since the 1930s: the Great Recession that originated from the bursting of a housing bubble in 2007 and was followed by a global financial crisis that culminated in the Golden State in the year 2009.The consequences of these crises were particularly severe in California and this dissertation aims at identifying the reasons accounting for this severity. It first stresses that the significant diversity of interests that comes from the state’s size, its economic structure and its socio-ethnic profile slows down political decision-making and increases its complexity. It can even result in an unequal representation of those interests. In addition, political partisanship is very high, and recession periods tend to increase this divide. This is one of the reasons behind the political and budget gridlocks of the 2000s that prevented legislators from promptly and efficiently dealing with the consequences of the recessions. Handling these consequences was also made difficult by the shift in power from local governments to the state, resulting in a slowing down of the decision-making process as well as in a shortage of funds. Besides, even though direct democracy has proved efficient in allowing citizens to circumvent gridlocks, it appears that a few propositions adopted through the initiative process have had unintended negative consequences like limiting the ability of elected officials to adjust revenues and expenditures in a timely manner. Indeed, the volatility of the California tax structure tends to be exacerbated when the economy takes a hit. This volatility is rather hard to offset both because the state does not tax services and a two-thirds majority vote is required to amend the tax code. Finally, several political decisions can be questioned, sometimes because they were made in favor of special interest groups while being detrimental to the public good. We conclude that the severity of the crises the Golden State went through during the 2000s results from a combination of both institutional and political weaknesses

"International financial crises" are meaningful events who question the order of the financial sector while impacting the rest of the society, notably at economic (drop of credits for example) and social levels (unemployment for example). In consequence, they clearly show values and norms that the state and its representatives stand up for when they communicate. Our research is based on communication activities of the members of the executive (ministers and the president of the Republic) during the "stock market crash of 1987", the "asian crisis of 1997-1998", and the "subprimes crisis of 2007-2008". Indeed there is a symbolic link between communication activities of the members of the executive and State communication. Ministers and the President are legitimate to embody the State and make it act through their communication activities. From this link, it is possible to understand the role of the State communication during an "international financial crisis". This thesis examines the participation of State communication in the government of French society. It also addresses the collaborative and competitive relationships, through of communication, that State officials have with different actors - such as journalists or political actors of other States - involved in building a "crisis". In short, our research suggests to include the communication of the State in logics of domination and power relations

Tunisia, the country from which sparked the revolutionary uprising in December 2010, presents a political and economic situation that has continued to evolve in a direction that is not always positive. It is characterized by instability and sometimes anarchy, which has had repercussions in all areas, particularly in the vital area of water, which management has been severely disrupted. In this perspective, this resarch is intended, based on a series of surveys and interviews, to contribute to a better understanding of the risks of water scarcity for the various actors in charge of the management of the resource in the area of the Tunisian Sahel (Sousse-Monastir). It proposes a critical analysis of the different interactions between the factors of scarcity and the indicators of water crisis in connection with the socioeconomic and geopolitical situation. The results of these investigations show a very delicate situation especially after the Revolution. However, levels of scarcity vary from one county to another eventhough the feeling of water stress is widespread in the tunisian Sahel. The study also offers a spacialized dataset that can be integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS), as well as a battery of individual and collective adaptation measures for a more efficient water management based on taking into account perceptions

The aim of this research if to develop a model of entry to resilience for organizations facing extreme events. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident is used as a case study. The accident is analyzed through the testimony of the Site Superintendent Masao Yoshida and the investigation reports. The goal is to answer the following questions: what are the conditions to assess resilience during the Fukushima Daiichi accident? What shape did the resilience take in this context? What processes have been activated particularly during the initiation of the resilience process?A specific methodology is produced to analyze Masao Yoshida’s testimony. This methodology also proves the usefulness of such a material to develop feedbacks in industrial organizations. The thesis draws lessons from the accident and defines an evaluation grid to study the precarious equilibrium between on-site and off-site that is highlighted by the data used. The provided model defines the processual and emerging logic of entry to resilience

In France, when an industrial accident occurs, the population confinement mainly prevails over its evacuation. Moreover, the latter suffers a lack of experience feedbacks, especially at the city scale. In addition, while numerous risk management and crisis documents exist, they marginally integrate the car drivers, for which evacuation does remain the most appropriate solution. The (good) progress of such a process depends both on (1) the public authorities’ strategy and (2) the choices made by each car driver during his trip. Indeed, some individual behaviors can generate conflicts in some points of the road network, and thus increase the duration of the whole network discharge. Thanks to the multi-agents simulation, we developed a method able to report the spatio-temporal consequences generated by different evacuation strategies, in Rouen (Normandy). Based on a daily travel model, a series of evacuation scenarios is tested, combining whether or not specific routes are set up, whether or not signage are maintained, and the adoption of an impatient behavior by some car drivers. The effectiveness of each strategy is defined by the total evacuation duration, and completed by a cartographic and dynamic analysis of the jammed areas of the Rouen network
