Abstract:
This article discusses the interest of emerging a unified view for group awareness and context information on groupware and context-aware systems. Group awareness corresponds to an important concept on Groupware applications, allowing individual users to be kept aware of group's activities and status. Context is defined by ubiquitous computing as any relevant information that can be used to characterize the situation of an entity. We assume that group awareness information should be considered as context information and handled as such. Group awareness information is often employed for decision making, contributing to users' activities and decisions, but it gives also an important clue about user's context, characterizing individual's actions regarding the group. As such, group awareness may be used for adaptation purposes, adapting the system behavior, the supplied content or its services. Besides, architectural concerns adopted on context-aware system should also be considered when developing new groupware applications that are more and more designed as context-aware systems.

Context aware computing is important for applications to provide smarter and safer<br />service to mobile users, especially when users’ context changing rapidly or regularly. In this paper,<br />we propose a context aware model for mobile devices based on audio and location. The information<br />can easily obtained from sensors, e.g., microphones and GPS. Thus, exploiting the MFCC features<br />and the location, a Bayes Net is trained and built and will be used for context classifying in the<br />real-time classification. The results of experiments implemented on Android 4.0 platform<br />demonstrate promising performance, which indicates that the model is able to support real<br />applications.

Abstract:
The very nature of mobile phones makes them ideal vehicles to study both individuals and organizations: people habitually carry a mobile phone with them and use it as a medium for much of their communication. The information available from today's phones includes the user's location, people nearby, and communication (call and SMS logs), as well as application usage and phone status (idle, charging, and so on). The main goal of this project is to combine some of the new technologies of voice over IP (VoIP) with context awareness services for mobile users and create a demonstrator for a typical routine of a student in Kista. We used context awareness together with the SIP Express Router to make a system more intelligent for the user. In this thesis the definition of CPL scripts and how they could exploit context information to provide SIP service that would be useful to a student were examined. A simple test was conducted to measure the overhead of using context awareness by the SIP proxy when processing CPL scripts.

Abstract:
The research described in this thesis considers mobile technology with particular reference to the use of context sensing. It is argued that such technologies are useful to enhance user proficiency in everyday tasks. A wearable, context–aware computer system and a set of evaluation tasks are devised to investigate this premise. A photograph diary study is carried out to elicit defining features of a broad range of everyday activities. These features are called Context Identifiers. From this a structured definition of context is suggested that bridges the gap between the current theoretical and technological definitions of context. Based on a literature review of current mobile and wearable technology and on the findings of the photograph diary study, a novel wearable computer and supporting software is developed. The wearable computer can detect and interpret features of everyday context, including Location, Posture and Movement, and Objects. During the design cycle of the wearable computer, experiments are conducted to evaluate three versions of the wearable computer. The usability of the computer is considered based on measures of efficiency, effectiveness and user satisfaction. Use of the system is shown to improve user task proficiency in the completion of simple tasks and the wearable computer is shown to capture context in a similar way to humans. Specifically when the first version of the system is used in an information retrieval task, the wearable computer is shown to significantly decrease task completion time when compared to using a standard internet enabled computer or users searching for information in their environment. In addition the task accuracy is increased. The second version of the system in which the number of everyday contextual features the system can detect is increased, again significantly decrease the task completion time when compared to the same system detecting less context features. The third version of the system which detects further more contextual features is shown to be highly usable based on a number of usability measures and is shown to capture context in a similar fashion to humans.

Abstract:
Today mobiles are a standard, multiple sensors that gathers data about the user is embedded within those mobiles. But the use of this data is not as common as one would think in the mobile game market. To observe and analyse how an implementation of this data would affect a mobile game from a common genre such as time-passing games a prototype were built. This prototype could be seen as a reversed gamification using training data, in this case footsteps, in order to enhance the game and make it more interesting for the user. Findings of how the data could be integrated within the game in a way that would interest users more have been gathered through a survey and are discussed and presented.

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Informática
Internet users consume online targeted advertising based on information collected about them and voluntarily share personal information in social networks. Sensor information and data from smart-phones is collected and used by applications, sometimes in unclear ways. As it happens today with smartphones, in the near future sensors will be shipped in all types of connected devices, enabling ubiquitous information gathering from the physical environment, enabling the vision of Ambient Intelligence. The value of gathered data, if not obvious, can be harnessed through data mining techniques and put to use by enabling personalized and tailored services as well as business intelligence practices, fueling the digital economy. However, the ever-expanding information gathering and use undermines the privacy conceptions of the past. Natural social practices of managing privacy in daily relations are overridden by socially-awkward communication tools, service providers struggle with security issues resulting in harmful data leaks, governments use mass surveillance techniques, the incentives of the digital economy threaten consumer privacy, and the advancement of consumergrade data-gathering technology enables new inter-personal abuses. A wide range of fields attempts to address technology-related privacy problems, however they vary immensely in terms of assumptions, scope and approach. Privacy of future use cases is typically handled vertically, instead of building upon previous work that can be re-contextualized, while current privacy problems are typically addressed per type in a more focused way. Because significant effort was required to make sense of the relations and structure of privacy-related work, this thesis attempts to transmit a structured view of it. It is multi-disciplinary - from cryptography to economics, including distributed systems and information theory - and addresses privacy issues of different natures. As existing work is framed and discussed, the contributions to the state-of-theart done in the scope of this thesis are presented. The contributions add to five distinct areas: 1) identity in distributed systems; 2) future context-aware services; 3) event-based context management; 4) low-latency information flow control; 5) high-dimensional dataset anonymity. Finally, having laid out such landscape of the privacy-preserving work, the current and future privacy challenges are discussed, considering not only technical but also socio-economic perspectives.

Full text
Abstract:
The First Person Vision (FPV) paradigm allows to seamlessly acquire images of the world from the user's perspective. Compared to standard Third Person Vision, FPV is advantageous for building intelligent wearable systems able to assist the user and augment his abilities. Given their intrinsic mobility and the ability to acquire user-related information, FPV systems have to deal with a continuously evolving environment. Moving from the observation that data acquired from a first person perspective is highly personal, we investigate contextual awareness for First Person Vision systems. We first focus on the task of recognizing personal locations of interest from egocentric videos. We consider personal locations at the instance level and address the problem of rejecting locations not of interest for the user. To challenge the problem, we introduce three datasets of 10 personal locations which we make publicly available, and perform a benchmark of different wearable devices and state-of-the-art representations. Moreover, we propose and evaluate methods to reject negative locations and perform personal location-based temporal segmentation of egocentric videos. As a second aspect, we investigate the anticipation of object interaction. We propose and define the task of next-active-object prediction as recognizing which objects are going to be interacted with, before the actual interaction begins. Even if recognizing next-active-objects is in general not trivial in unconstrained settings, we show that the First Person Vision paradigm provides useful cues to address the challenge. We propose a next-active-object prediction method based on the analysis of egocentric object trajectories and assess its superior performances with respect to other cues such as object appearance, distance from the center of the frame, presence of hands and visual saliency. In appendix, we also report some investigations on extraction features directly from wide angle images.

Abstract:

This project aims to describe how workflow systems can integrate and make use of context information from context rich environments, to enhance the execution of workflow processes. Context information can for example be used to control transitions between activities, activity enactment and process/activity coordination. A dynamic contextual environment also requires that a workflow system is capable of responding to contextual events. A set of requirements for a context-aware workflow system, based on existing workflow standards, theory behind context-aware computing and activity theory, will be presented and elaborated. Prototypes, which illustrate how these requirements can be implemented in a standard based workflow system, are also provided. Based on the solutions presented in the prototypes, a new interface for a workflow enactment service is presented. This new interface serves as the link between the contextual environment and the workflow system. We also present a solution for handling context related exception states. The definition of basic terms in workflow systems are expanded to better support context-aware behaviour. Ideas and solutions for more complex requirements not met in our prototypes are also discussed, such as situated activity coordination.

O’Brien, Tom, and Ben Olson. Equity in Learning Opportunities for Middle School Students: Connecting Communities and Transportation Through GIS. Mineta Transportation Institute, September 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2023.2247.

Full text
Abstract:
Geographic information systems (GIS) is part of an in-demand career skillset that can lead to safer streets in California communities. This project included a three-session bootcamp that introduced middle school students to transportation via GIS and gathered assessments on their awareness of transportation as a career pathway. The project built upon CSUTC TRANSPORTS’ Year 4 project, “K–12 Special Investigation Project: Mapping E-Commerce Locally and Beyond.” The bootcamp for this project was coordinated in partnership with Rio Hondo College, which provided the instructor and connection to the students at the Mountain View Unified School District in El Monte, CA. The bootcamp focused on developing safer communities and transportation systems as a context for the students to become familiar with GIS. The student feedback reported on student awareness of transportation and GIS prior to the bootcamp and how the curricular tools and activities impacted that awareness. Gathered data and feedback will inform the development of future middle school GIS curricula, an area that is underdeveloped.

Lyzanchuk, Vasyl. COMMUNICATIVE SYNERGY OF UKRAINIAN NATIONAL VALUES IN THE CONTEXT OF THE RUSSIAN HYBRID WAR. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11077.

Full text
Abstract:
The author characterized the Ukrainian national values, national interests and national goals. It is emphasized that national values are conceptual, ideological bases, consolidating factors, important life guidelines on the way to effective protection of Ukraine from Russian aggression and building a democratic, united Ukrainian state. Author analyzes the functioning of the mass media in the context of educational propaganda of individual, social and state values, the dominant core of which are patriotism, human rights and freedoms, social justice, material and spiritual wealth of Ukrainians, natural resources, morality, peace, religiosity, benevolence, national security, constitutional order. These key national values are a strong moral and civic core, a life-giving element, a self-affirming synergy, which on the basis of homogeneity binds the current Ukrainian society with the ancestors and their centuries-old material and spiritual heritage. Attention is focused on the fact that the current problem of building the Ukrainian state and protecting it from the brutal Moscow invaders is directly dependent on the awareness of all citizens of the essence of national values, national interests, national goals and filling them with the meaning of life, charitable socio-political life. It is emphasized that the missionary vocation of journalists to orient readers and listeners to the meaningful choice of basic national values, on the basis of which Ukrainian citizens, regardless of nationality together they will overcome the external Moscow and internal aggression of the pro-Russian fifth column, achieve peace, return the Ukrainian territories seized by the Kremlin imperialists and, in agreement will build Ukrainian Ukraine.

Abstract:
The limited participation of Iraqi women in community decision-making in Kirkuk and Diyala is the result of various intertwined factors. This study explores emerging opportunities for social transformation in the context of sedimented layers of male privilege and the questioning of restrictive gender norms in the two governorates. With this report, Oxfam and its partners aim to dismantle barriers to women’s active participation, which is currently constrained by stereotypes and restrictive ideas about gender. Among the promising pathways for change are awareness-raising activities with male allies, alongside other longer-term efforts advancing transformative change in attitudes, practices, and behaviors.

Abed, Dana, Rihab Sawaya, and Nadim Tabbal. Analyzing Voter Turnout in Lebanon: Political Change in Times of Crisis. Oxfam, April 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2022.8823.

Full text
Abstract:
In May 2022, Lebanon is hosting its first parliamentary elections since the popular uprising of October 2019, when massive protests took place to denounce the current ruling elites. This research looks at voter turnout and behavior on the eve of the elections and examines the will for political change. It argues that in the current Lebanese context, there needs to be further political awareness-raising, and campaigns should be more inclusive of women and the queer community. Independent campaigns should focus on developing strong governing capacities that voters can trust, and create further space for civic and political engagement on the local and national levels.

TUC Urban Lab Profile: Alliance for the Residencial Edgar Gayoso, Teresina, Brazil. United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), March 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.53324/vfoy6162.

Full text
Abstract:
After almost two years in operation, the challenges and key achievements of the TUC Urban Lab established in Residencial Edgar Gayoso in Teresina, Brazil, provide valuable lessons for sustaining ongoing activities, accelerating broader transformations and guiding similar efforts elsewhere: 1. ASSEMBLING A TRANSFORMATIVE COALITION FOR PARTICIPATORY GOVERNANCE: The UL approach has been instrumental in overcoming challenges associated with the MCMV programme in Residencial Edgar Gayoso, fostering community empowerment and sustainable local transformation. Establishing commitment within new local networks requires fundamental steps such as building trust, defining tangible goals, decentralizing decision-making, making individuals accountable and ensuring accessible meeting formats. 2. BUILDING CONNECTIONS AND RAISING AWARENESS FOR CLIMATE ACTION: The development of mutual trust and awareness of climate change within the Alliance for the Residencial Edgar Gayoso is a precondition for tailoring climate discussions to the local context and emphasizing practical connections between pressing local needs and climate action. Promoting stronger engagement and collaboration is pivotal for achieving transformative changes across practical, political and personal spheres. 3. LEVERAGING OPPORTUNITIES TO BROADEN THE IMPACT OF THE UL: Triggering systemic transformation requires a shift from individual-centric participation to broader institutional involvement within the Alliance for the Residencial Edgar Gayoso. Moreover, institutionalization through diverse organizational strategies coupled with strategic partnerships is essential.

Grieco, Kevin. Building Fiscal Capacity with Traditional Political Institutions: Experimental and Qualitative Evidence from Sierra Leone. Institute of Development Studies, May 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2024.028.

Full text
Abstract:
How can weak states build fiscal capacity? I argue that governments in weak states can build fiscal capacity by collaborating with non-state, traditional political institutions (TPIs). Using a mix of experimental and qualitative evidence, I show that this collaboration increases citizens’ compliance because TPIs possess legitimacy and coercive capacity. Collaborating with the local government in Kono District, Sierra Leone, I embedded an experiment in their campaign to collect property taxes. Potential taxpayers were shown awareness videos that varied in their content, particularly in terms of whether and how their local paramount chief characterised his involvement in tax collection. I find that state collaboration with TPIs increases a preregistered proxy of citizens’ compliance with a newly introduced property tax and that TPIs’ authority stems from both their legitimacy and coercive capacity. Qualitative evidence from 300 semi-structured interviews adds a richer description of legitimacy and coercive capacity in my context. I argue, based on qualitative evidence, that legitimacy and coercion are complementary mechanisms of TPIs’ authority enabling them to effectively coordinate collective action to produce local public goods in the absence of the state.

Borgès Da Silva, Roxane. COVID-19 : Comprendre et agir sur l’acceptabilité sociale des mesures de santé publique. CIRANO, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54932/izck1391.

Abstract:
As of May 14, masks will no longer be required to be worn in indoor public places such as businesses, schools and daycares. It will continue to be required in public transportation, hospitals, medical clinics and CHSLDs. A survey conducted by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec from April 15 to 27 shows that two-thirds of respondents still intend to continue wearing the mask. But in reality, how will Quebecers react? What will be their motivations? How can we ensure that they make informed choices based on their circumstances and the objective risk factors they - and those around them - face? And how do we avoid the ostracization of those who will continue to wear the mask? Research inspired by experimental economics provides insight into the role that awareness and improved knowledge of the real risks associated with COVID-19 can play in people's intentions and reactions following the implementation - or removal - of various measures. This short text presents the results of two experimental studies conducted in the specific context of the reopening of schools in September 2020. These studies allow us to draw two main conclusions about the social acceptability of health measures and individual choices in the face of the pandemic: It is essential to provide valid, accurate, and simple sources of information to inform and reassure the population about the risks of developing COVID-19, without causing "cognitive overload." Simple awareness tools, clear and evidence-based information can have an impact on people's perceptions and choices when it comes to their health or that of their loved ones.

Turmena, Lucas, Aline Lusieux, Simone Sandholz, Flávia Guerra, and Michael Roll. TUC City Profile: Recife, Brazil. United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.53324/rrep9173.

Full text
Abstract:
Recife is a prominent front-runner for climate policymaking in Brazil, having formulated robust plans and strategies at the city scale. The next step is to overcome the gap between strategic planning and local action at the neighbourhood scale. Historically, urban development in Recife has been marked by social inequalities. To ensure social inclusion and justice in climate action, it is critical to open up governance structures to include bottom-up, community-based approaches and incentivize co-production of urban space between governmental and non-governmental actors. Climate action can build on opportunities to also tackle inequalities in Recife, prioritizing the most vulnerable communities. To support this goal, social indicators can be used next to traditional emissions data to assess how transformative climate action is in the city. The climate agenda should be mainstreamed into urban development in Recife, particularly in the context of upgrading informal and low-income settlements. Capacity development and awareness raising activities drawing on local expertise, knowledge and practices can facilitate that.

Liaga, Emmaculate Asige. Towards Local Approaches and Inclusive Peacebuilding in South Sudan. RESOLVE Network, October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37805/pn2021.24.lpbi.

Full text
Abstract:
The post-liberation peacebuilding in South Sudan, which largely drew from liberal peace theory, was employed between 2005 (after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and before the referendum, secession, and independence in 2011) and December 2013 (when it imploded into a civil conflict) and proved insufficient to sustain the fragile peace that briefly existed after the country’s secession from Sudan. After a protracted conflict lasting almost half a decade and the presence of multiple peace actors, the lack of a comprehensive and coordinated peacebuilding strategy proved detrimental. This failure is partly due to poor coordination between stakeholders and lack of local/domestic legitimacy, leading to insufficient peacebuilding and an aggravation of the 2013 conflict. Over the years, liberal peacebuilding strategies, which emphasize formal institution-building and statebuilding in fragile and conflict-affected environments, continue to produce mixed to poor results and fragile peace. This decline has resulted in the shifting of discourses and operations within peacebuilding, a paradigm shift that pays greater attention to localization and the local context in the conceptualization of peacebuilding objectives and strategies. This transformation promotes local ownership and inclusivity in peace processes and their dividends. The dialogue on inclusive peace has thus gained momentum, bearing a need to fully engage both states and societies in this process. The “local” in peacebuilding forms an important resource when solving root causes of conflicts, as in South Sudan, by improving awareness of the cultural and historical diversity in a given context.
