Full text
Abstract:
This chapter contributes to defining a common research agenda on organizational trust, first by content-analyzing scholarly recommendations for future research published between 2007 and 2011 across 347 articles and 58 social science journals and second by reviewing the latest developments in trust research published between 2012 and 2015 across 111 articles and 31 top-tier management journals. This content analysis of scholarly recommendations yields an emergent organizing framework that offers systematic insight into the trust community’s beliefs about how the field should move forward, while the review of the latest developments in the field provide insight into whether these recommendations have recently been followed up on, or whether research has developed in previously unanticipated directions. The chapter concludes with suggestions on how individual researchers and the trust community as a whole can use and build on these findings to help advance the field.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that EU socioeconomic coordination can support social investment. Both the Lisbon Treaty’s main norms and goals and the European Semester’s short-term goals are in line with social investment. This chapter closely scrutinizes the country-specific recommendations (CSRs) stemming from the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP). Whereas this coordination cycle has been criticized for having a one-sided focus on limiting public expenditure, even the SGP at times results in recommendations that encourage social investment. Such recommendations only address a limited number of policies and are communicated to a small number of countries. However, the scope for and the content of social investment recommendations changes from year to year, reflecting that coordination is open to changes. This adjustment capacity provides new opportunities for social investment to further integrate into the European Semester process of socioeconomic coordination, thus building on core social principles of the Lisbon Treaty.

Newins, Amie R., and Laura C. Wilson. A Clinician's Guide to Disclosures of Sexual Assault. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med-psych/9780197523643.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexual assault is a worldwide public health concern, as it occurs to people of all genders at alarming rates and results in serious physical and mental health sequelae. The reactions survivors receive from formal and informal supports can significantly influence their recovery. Given the prevalence of sexual assault, all providers need to be prepared to handle disclosures of sexual assault from clients. The aim of this book is to provide guidance on how to interact with survivors of sexual assault, which the authors define as sexual contact or penetration without the explicit consent of the victim. While the book is primarily geared toward mental health professionals, the content is also relevant for professionals who work in medical settings, educational settings, law enforcement, and victim services. The authors also highlight that there are particular populations (e.g., racial and sexual minorities) and settings (e.g., military, higher education) that require particular considerations when discussing sexual violence. Overall, professionals have an instrumental role in facilitating survivor recovery, and this book provides best practices for providing services in an affirming manner. The book begins with a review of literature focused on sexual assault and survivor disclosure. Then, recommendations are provided for conducting assessments and psychotherapy with survivors of sexual assault. Case examples are presented to help illustrate specific recommendations for working with survivors of sexual assault. Finally, particular recommendations for various specific populations are provided.

Abstract:
Hispanics experience significant physical and behavioral health disparities compared to their racial and ethnic counterparts. To combat these health disparities, evidence-based interventions (EBIs) that prevent risk and promote protective factors within the broader context of culture must be systematically developed and disseminated. The purpose of this chapter is to describe key concepts related to the content and process of developing culturally relevant preventive interventions. The continuum of approaches for developing culturally relevant preventive interventions, including strengths and limitations, practical considerations, and recommendations for overcoming existing challenges, are discussed. Two exemplar preventive interventions targeting Hispanic youth and families, Criando con Amor: Promoviendo Armonia y Superación and Familias Unidas, are also highlighted. The approaches described in this chapter may maximize intervention effects and improve health outcomes for underrepresented minority groups, such as Hispanics.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Unconditional Care in Context examines the multiple, interacting social adversities that confront system-involved families and children and argues that intervention with these young people regularly fails to acknowledge the effects of these challenges. Assessment and treatment practices often focus only on relational and behavioral forces at work within individual children and their families. The book reviews the ways in which intervention in the child welfare, public behavioral health, education, and juvenile justice systems omits the daily realities of lives that are constrained and disrupted by the injuries of racism, the limitations imposed by poverty, the threat of eviction and homelessness, the danger of community violence and crime, and the compounding effects of social disconnection and isolation. These challenges never operate in isolation and are never brief or fleeting. Instead, for many system-involved families they are chronic and cumulative and amplify each other. They also can infiltrate internal life and undermine the developing child’s sense of personal agency and value. Unconditional Care in Context reviews the tangled effects of multiple social adversities and offers a roadmap to reclaiming these problems as appropriate, vital concerns of human service agencies and their workers. It offers concrete recommendations for “ecologically informed practice” at the level of the family, at the level of schools and communities, and at the level of state and national policy. Current examples of program innovations and policy initiatives that move in this direction are reviewed.

Guideline for the Treatment of Leishmaniasis in the Americas. Second Edition. Pan American Health Organization, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275125038.

Abstract:
Leishmaniasis is a neglected infectious disease of great importance in the Region of the Americas because of its prevalence, wide geographical distribution, morbidity and mortality. Several species of Leishmania can cause disease, and the resulting presentations differ in their clinical manifestations, diagnostic signs, severity, and treatment responses. The three main forms of leishmaniasis disease are: cutaneous, mucosal or visceral, of which cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most common. Visceral leishmaniasis (caused by L. infantum) is the most severe form and can cause death in up to 90% of untreated people. In 2013, PAHO, with the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, developed recommendations for the treatment of leishmaniasis in the Americas using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology. Since that time, new evidence has accumulated necessitating a revision of these recommendations. This publication, the second edition of the treatment guidelines for the Americas, has been put together with the leadership of PAHO’s Regional Program for Leishmaniasis with the support of the World Health Organization. It presents updated therapeutic recommendations for all three major forms of leishmaniasis disease, detailing the schemes and criteria for indication of treatment in the regional context. There are several notable changes from the first edition. For cutaneous disease, ketoconazole has been removed from the list of treatment options. Evidence for thermotherapy and pentamidine isethionate has been upgraded to “conditional” from “weak” in the previous edition. The number of Leishmania species for which there is strong evidence of the effectiveness of miltefosine has increased from two to four. And the evidence for intralesional antimonials in this disease form is now strong, whereas previously it was considered weak. The evidence for treatments for mucosal leishmaniasis – which is now considered separately to cutaneous disease – has become stronger since the first analysis, with the recommendation for use of pentavalent antimonials with or without oral pentoxifylline now strong. For visceral disease, the evidence has moved in the other direction. Whereas in the first edition, the evidence was considered strong for pentavalent antimonials, amphotericina B deoxycholate, it is now conditional. For miltefosine, there is now strong evidence against its useage. Further changes include the division of recommendations by adult and pediatric populations and the addition of new specific recommendations for immunocompromised patients that were not available in the first edition, including a strong recommendation against the use of pentavalent antimonials.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the content and procedures of a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation. Components include the referral question, review of records, history, observation, and assessment. Rating scales, standardized tests, and interviews make up the assessment portion of the evaluation process. The entire process must use multiple measures and assess multiple viewpoints and settings. Cognitive, academic, behavioral, social skills, and executive functions may be included in the assessment. A thorough integration of the findings from multiple sources must be accomplished to reach meaningful diagnostic conclusions and determine relevant recommendations. IDEA requirements for school-based evaluation processes are explained and contrasted with independent evaluation methods.
