Abstract:
This article looks at the increasing incidence of television format flows in the Asia-Pacific, and draws upon findings from a three-year, 11-country study. It argues that format activity is both a consequence of demand for low-cost content and a catalyst for change in local content. Fashioning formats has become a means of financial and cultural insurance. Media producers in Asia have joined the international television format trade circuit. This paper looks at a number of international formats that have staked out a presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Abstract:
In this article I argue that as well as item content, item formats (i.e., phrasing and response formats) are also important. Most trait items can be mapped onto 4 dimensions: point of reference (first person, possessive, others, indicator), general item format (staticity, frequency, valency, frequency + valency), construct indicator (attributal, behavioral, mental, contextual), and conditionality (unconditional, conditional). An item taxonomy tree for the first person perspective is provided for an Openness to Experiences item, and NEO-PI-R Extraversion items are analyzed according to the 4-item format dimensions. Future lines of research on item phrasing are outlined.

Abstract:
Online public catalogs have provided users with the option to conduct faceted searches for more than a decade. Although faceting is undoubtedly useful to the discovery process, the authors found that their system’s default facet mapping was inadequate for their researchers’ needs, particularly for the faceting of bibliographic formats, and librarians at their institution have worked extensively to revise this mapping. These revisions have relied on creating complex decision trees, which require the system to consult multiple fields and subfields in bibliographic records to assign more precise format facets. When their authority control vendor offered to add Resource Description and Access (RDA) coding to their bibliographic records, including the new Content, Media, and Carrier fields that describe formats with greater granularity than the General Material Designation, they questioned whether the new RDA coding might improve their public catalog’s format faceting. They found that the limitations of the MARC format as a data encoding standard meant that the RDA coding was not appreciably more useful to the format faceting process.

Abstract:
The content technology needs to attain forms with more intelligence, flexibility and complete features than those being currently on the market or proposed by standards. In this paper, an analysis of the state of the art about intelligent and complex content models is presented. The analysis allowed identifying a number of topics and features which models and formats should evolve according to. The work has been used to extend AXMEDIS content model and format which in turn is grounded on MPEG-21, SMIL, HTML, and other standards. The Extended AXMEDIS format presents a set of new features among them: semantic descriptors, extended annotations, intelligent behavioral and semantic computing capabilities. The newly obtained format has been compared against NewsML which is one of the most widespread formats for news production and distribution. The management of news has some peculiarities such as container, production tools and players, that may take advantage of the intelligent content features and applications. Moreover, news have to be massively processed for ingestion and repurposing, and present relevant requirements on right control. Also these features may be satisfied by AXMEDIS tools. To this end, a comparative analysis of processing and modeling NewsML with AXMEDIS tools and format has been performed and reported to verify the usage. In addition, AXMEDIS format can be profitably used for a range of innovative applications of intelligent content.

Abstract:
Recently, 360° content has emerged as a new method for offering real-life interaction. Ultra-high resolution 360° content is mapped to the two-dimensional plane to adjust to the input of existing generic coding standards for transmission. Many formats have been proposed, and tremendous work is being done to investigate 360° videos in the Joint Video Exploration Team using projection-based coding. However, the standardization activities for quality assessment of 360° images are limited. In this study, we evaluate the coding performance of various projection formats, including recently-proposed formats adapting to the input of JPEG and JPEG 2000 content. We present an overview of the nine state-of-the-art formats considered in the evaluation. We also propose an evaluation framework for reducing the bias toward the native equi-rectangular (ERP) format. We consider the downsampled ERP image as the ground truth image. Firstly, format conversions are applied to the ERP image. Secondly, each converted image is subjected to the JPEG and JPEG 2000 image coding standards, then decoded and converted back to the downsampled ERP to find the coding gain of each format. The quality metrics designed for 360° content and conventional 2D metrics have been used for both end-to-end distortion measurement and codec level, in two subsampling modes, i.e., YUV (4:2:0 and 4:4:4). Our evaluation results prove that the hybrid equi-angular format and equatorial cylindrical format achieve better coding performance among the compared formats. Our work presents evidence to find the coding gain of these formats over ERP, which is useful for identifying the best image format for a future standard.

Abstract:
This paper is based on a PhD study of the content of Islamic television broadcasting. Even though there are attempts in the Muslim world to produce Islamic television programs, most of the programs do not comply with Islamic rules either because of some content that includes some scenes that are not Islamic or because of the format that is usually rudimentary and unattractive. This paper focuses on Islamic television programs. It identifies important characteristics of Islamic television content such as reality and objectivity, comprehensiveness, moderation and application of Islamic distinctive features. It also identifies four characteristics of Islamic television programs’ format; which are artistic production, delivering indirect messages, adapting the message to the audience, and simplicity and frequency.

Abstract:
The contemporary media culture in Serbia has been marked by two trends - democratization and transformation of the media. These parallel processes on the eve of the 21st century led to the decrease in informative contents and the increase in the entertainment ones. Therefore, reality shows take primacy in Serbia, no longer being an exclusive feature of the television. This paper is aimed at researching and describing the ways in which informative contents in the Serbian media have been replaced by television reality contents, as well as the ways in which the printed media and internet portals inform about them. By the qualitative method of content analysis, this paper realizes its goal to fathom the mechanisms of the transposition of the informative content into the entertainment one, thus deconstructing journalistic practices. The results will indicate that the domestic portals relate to realities in two ways - the first and less common modality is ignoring, while the second implies uncritical acceptance of this type of content, which creates fertile soil for the development and maintenance of the so-called reality culture.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Evaluating potential data losses from mapping proprietary medical data formats to standards is essential for decision making. The article implements a method to evaluate the preliminary content overlap of proprietary medical formats, including national terminologies and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)—international medical standard. Methods Three types of mappings were evaluated in the article: proprietary format matched to FHIR, national terminologies matched to the FHIR mappings, and concepts from national terminologies matched to Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine–Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). We matched attributes of the formats with FHIR definitions and calculated content overlap. Results The article reports the results of a manual mapping between a proprietary medical format and the FHIR standard. The following results were obtained: 81% of content overlap for the proprietary format to FHIR mapping, 88% of content overlap for the national terminologies to FHIR mapping, and 98.6% of concepts matching can be reached from national terminologies to SNOMED CT mapping. Twenty tables from the proprietary format and 20 dictionaries were matched with FHIR resources; nine dictionaries were matched with SNOMED CT concepts. Conclusion Mapping medical formats is a challenge. The obtained overlaps are promising in comparison with the investigated results. The study showed that standardization of data exchange between proprietary formats and FHIR is possible in Russia, and national terminologies can be used in FHIR-based information systems.

Abstract:
Recent work in the semantics of markup languages may offer a way to achieve more reliable results for format conversion, or at least a way to state the goal more explicitly. In the work discussed, the meaning of markup in a document is taken as the set of things accepted as true because of the markup's presence, or equivalently, as the set of inferences licensed by the markup in the document. It is possible, in principle, to apply a general semantic description of a markup vocabulary to documents encoded using that vocabulary and to generate a set of inferences (typically rather large, but finite) as a result. An ideal format conversion translating a digital object from one vocabulary to another, then, can be characterized as one which neither adds nor drops any licensed inferences; it is possible to check this equivalence explicitly for a given conversion of a digital object, and possible in principle (although probably beyond current capabilities in practice) to prove that a given transformation will, if given valid and semantically correct input, always produce output that is semantically equivalent to its input. This approach is directly applicable to the XML formats frequently used for scientific and other data, but it is also easily generalized from SGML/XML-based markup languages to digital formats in general; at a high level, it is equally applicable to document markup, to database exchanges, and to ad hoc formats for high-volume scientific data. Some obvious complications and technical difficulties arising from this approach are discussed, as are some important implications. In most real-world format conversions, the source and target formats differ at least somewhat in their ontology, either in the level of detail they cover or in the way they carve reality into classes; it is thus desirable not only to define what a perfect format conversion looks like, but to quantify the loss or distortion of information resulting from the conversion.

Abstract:
This article presents our design and development of a description logics-based planner for providing contextdriven content adaptation services. This approach dynamically transforms requested Web content into a proper format conforming to receiving contexts (e.g., access condition, network connection, and receiving device). Aiming to establish a semantic foundation for content adaptation, we apply description logics to formally define context profiles and requirements. We also propose a formal Object Structure Model as the basis of content adaptation management for higher reusability and adaptability. To automate content adaptation decision, our content adaptation planner is driven by a stepwise procedure equipped with algorithms and techniques to enable rule-based context-driven content adaptation over the mobile Internet. Experimental results prove the effectiveness and efficiency of our content adaptation planner on saving transmission bandwidth, when users are using handheld devices. By reducing the size of adapted content, we moderately decrease the computational overhead caused by content adaptation.

Abstract:
Content digitalization brings products with homogeneous content but in different formats (digital format and physical format) together. Recently retailers in the online book industry started bundling programs such as Amazon Matchbook, giving print book buyers a free or deeply discounted e-book version. While this bundling strategy is attractive to consumers, it potentially allows consumers to resell the print book in the bundle, which might cannibalize retailers' sales. Consequently, it will influence all participants in the industry including the publisher, the retailers, and the consumers. Using a two-period model, the authors investigate the impacts of this strategy under both monopoly and competition. The authors compute the equilibrium outcome for both scenarios. The findings show that (1) under monopoly, both the publisher and the retailer sell at a higher rate; consumers also see higher total surplus; (2) under competition, the retailer who provides bundling will gain a competitive advantage. This study indicates that the bundling model yields a win-win strategy.

The article analyses the issues of television format and its dramatic foundation. Unlike film, a television spectacle is, above all, reproducible: in its core lays a replicated plot structure, which is filled with new content in each new episode of the series. The need for establishing of a steady communication with TV audience demands special rules, instruments and plot devices, enclosed in a professional term television format. Consistent modelling of predetermined reactions of the audience is in the core of the formats dramatic structure. The format is seen outside the specific subject-matter; as a dynamic system: as a number of multi-level codes.

Abstract:
The coming of digital living, as well as the rising popularity of smart phones and tablets, has seen a rush by digital content applications on mobile devices. Most have focused their attention on the hardware and equipment, while the source of content and format development has attracted relatively little attention. For the electronic books industry, hardware is not the only challenge. The development of the ebook format is another issue that they must now contend with. Future mobile readers continue to follow the trend towards color. Thinner, lighter as well as ever cheaper electronic products with more integrated functions are also on the table. If a reader appears that offers more advantages and is better suited to user requirements, this means the publishing format of ebooks will naturally evolve in the direction of multimedia ebooks that offer greater variety. Right now, the hardware side of digital publishing formats is developing in multiple directions. No single specification has emerged for publishing format and copyright management however. As most publishers and authors still harbor doubts about licensing in digital publishing, this has also made it difficult to acquire digital copyrights. All of these are important issues facing the digital publishing industry today.

Abstract Self-reports in surveys are often influenced by the presented question format and question context. Much less is known about how these effects influence the answers of younger survey respondents. The present study investigated how variations in response format, answer scale frequency, and question order influence self-reports of two age groups: younger (11–13 years old) and older (16–18 years old) adolescents. In addition, the impact of the respondents’ level of familiarity with the question content was taken into account. Results indicated that younger adolescents are more strongly influenced by the presented question format and context than older adolescents. This, however, was dependent on the particular question content, implying that response effects are more pronounced when questions deal with issues that lie outside of the respondents’ field of experience. Implications of these findings in survey research with younger respondents are discussed.

Abstract:
High-content screening, typically defined as automated fluorescence microscopy combined with image analysis, is now well established as a means to study test compound effects in cellular disease-modeling systems. In this work, the authors establish several high-content screening assays in the 384-well format to measure the activation of the CC-type chemokine receptors 2B and 3 (CCR2B, CCR3). As a cellular model system, the authors use Chinese hamster ovary cells, stably transfected with 1 of the respective receptors. They characterize receptor stimulation by human monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 for CCR2B and by human eotaxin-1 for CCR3: Receptor internalization and receptor-induced phosphorylation of ERK1/2 (pERK) were quantified using fluorescence imaging and image analysis. The 4 assay formats were robust, displayed little day-to-day variability, and delivered good Z′ statistics for both CCRs. For each of the 2 receptors, the authors evaluated the potency of inhibitory compounds in the internalization format and the pERK assay and compared the results with those from other assays (ligand displacement binding, Ca2+ mobilization, guanosine triphosphate exchange, chemotaxis). Both physiological agonists and test compounds differed significantly with respect to potencies and efficacies in the various profiling assays. The diverse assay formats delivered partially overlapping and partially complementary information, enabling the authors to reduce the probability of test compound—related technology artifacts and to specify the mode of action for individual test compounds. Transfer of the high-content screening format to a fully automated medium-throughput screening platform for CCR3 enabled the profiling of large compound numbers with respect to G protein signaling and possible tolerance-inducing liabilities. Abstract:
Hybrid courses allow students additional exposure to course content that is not possible in a traditional classroom environment. This exposure may lead to an improvement in academic performance. In this report, I describe the transition of a large undergraduate exercise physiology course from a traditional lecture format to a hybrid lecture-online format. A total of 658 final grades (traditional = 346, hybrid = 312) was used to evaluate the effect of course format on academic performance. The hybrid online portion was delivered using WebCT Vista, enhanced with various instructional technologies. The hybrid lecture portion was enhanced with an in-class response system. PowerPoint files were used to distribute in-class lectures in both formats of the course. Final student grades were 9.9% higher (83% of the increase due to an increase in the exam grade) when the course was administered in a hybrid format ( P = 0.01), which translated to a one letter grade increase on a standard grading scale. Transition from a traditional lecture format to a hybrid format significantly enhanced student learning; presumably, this increase is due to the fact that students were able to increase their exposure to course content via access to material on WebCT.

Abstract:
While the international flows of media content and the emergence of global media giants have gained extensive scholarly attention, their implications for national television production remain understudied. The article addresses the question of how the concentration of ownership and transnational flows involved in global media industries determine television production in a small national market. By analysing the structures, practices and agencies involved in programme format import and adaptation in Finland, the article introduces the format catalogue as the main vehicle of distributing and establishing the structuring properties of global formats in local television production.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION Accurate written communication is essential in orthopaedic surgery. Incomplete and poorly structured letters can lead to poor knowledge of a patient's diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Structured and traditional letter formats were compared for speed of reading and preference by general practitioners (GPs), consultants, registrars and out-patient nursing staff. In addition, out-patient clinic letters and notes were analysed and compared for speed of reading and ease of assimilating information and content. RESULTS There was overwhelming preference for the structured letter format. This style of letter could be read significantly more quickly with information better assimilated and relevant data included more frequently. However, only 26% of letters generated contained a complete set of information sought by GPs and hospital staff. CONCLUSIONS Structured letters are better in orthopaedics because it is easier to access the contents. The structured format disciplines medical staff to address essential information. Even with a structured format the majority of letters omitted essential information. Training in letter writing is necessary. A structured letter format next to dictating machines might improve the quality of letters generated.

Abstract:
PurposeTo describe INFORM, a new methodology for investigating and measuring the risk factors of digital formats and providing guidelines for preservation action plans.Design/methodology/approachConstruction of a model which aims to discover specific threats to preservation and measure their possible impact on preservation decisions. The methodology defines: risk categories of digital formats and their dependencies; risk factors for each category; scales to measure probability of occurrence and impact; and methods to collect, report and interpret the results.FindingsWhile individuals are biased and subjective in their aversion to risk, collating the assessments of many individuals should generate group‐consensus or group‐averaged objective results. Hence, preservation plans can be based on objective analysis of risk trends instead of individuals’ opinions developed in the relative isolation of their institutions. The methodology takes into consideration individuals’ aversion to risk, therefore refraining from imposing specific courses of action, but simply making suggestions of possible actions.Research limitations/implicationsA comprehensive approach to the format assessment must also consider, in addition to the risk factors, two other considerations, reflecting the quality of the digital format specification: significant properties of the format under consideration; the features of the format as defined in the format specification. These two aspects will be defined at a later time.Practical implicationsDigital archives, institutional repositories and digital libraries can take advantage of the measurements offered by the INFORM method to select digital formats most apt for long‐term viability. Moreover, by repeating the process, involved parties can detect changes in the threat model over time, to which digital collections managers can act accordingly.Originality/valueRisk management has been previously used to detect the potential of loss of web resources and has been inspirational to this author. However, this method is the first to use risk factors to measure digital preservation viability of digital formats. The results of the measurements described here can be used by: content creators and publishers, to suggest best formats to use; content curators, to restrict what is collected; content managers, to know in advance how difficult to handle a certain collection may be; and preservation planners, to define and implement preservation plans, in the form of either, migration strategies or short‐term emulation solutions.

Abstract:
This article illustrates the TV format business in Japan, which has a 60-year history of TV broadcasting and is the second biggest market in the world; however, it is still a small player in the business. The article examines the elements which prevent the international sale of more TV formats and suggests possible solutions. To meet the objectives, this study presents the following research: 1) a questionnaire to ask TV content buyers about the problems and strong points of Japanese TV formats, 2) semi-structured interviews with Japanese TV format sellers via email, 3) semi-structured interviews with TV format experts, and 4) archival research. As a result, this study found that the elements that prevent Japan from developing the TV format business include their unique presentation style in light entertainment shows, called ‘variety show style’, an inability to adjust this structure to the international market, and traditional Japanese-styled business practices. As possible solutions, this article suggests 1) introducing flying producers, 2) changing the business structure, 3) buying foreign TV formats, and 4) taking risks.
