Abstract:
This collection of original essays concerning democracy and the challenges it faces throughout the world is the result of events beginning with the establishment of an endowed center, The Cline Center for Democracy, at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University oflllinois. The intentional focus is on "the big picture" for democracy in the world in view of increasing diversity and "Information Age innovations." The essays originally presented at a conference in 2004 generated discussion among attending scholars representing "a variety of subdisciplines." Revisions based upon scholarly input resulted in the final collection presented here. The collection is invaluable as a tool to evaluate democracies at their various stages in the world today, to offer learned considerations and options for improving or stabilizing existing democracies and to offer best chance scenarios for establishment of lasting democracy in transition countries such as Iraq . (It is worth noting that "the companion volume, International Perspectives on Contemporary Democracy, deals with ... the prospects for a fourth wave of democratization and the challenges that globalization poses for democratic governance.")

Abstract:
The Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China perceive each other as strategic, independent and equal partners with joint projects in bilateral trade, national security, tourism, education, etc. Countries are committed to long-term and mature cooperation and to peaceful and balanced settlement of disputes. Successful intercultural communication, based on an understanding of the values and norms of another nation, is a guarantee not only of peaceful relations but also of mutually beneficial partnership. We should understand that communication does not take place between States and organizations, but between real people and representatives of their countries. The communicator is the bearer of the collective experience of his people. Its national and cultural identity is shaped by the society in which he was brought up. In intercultural communication «their» norms are treated as reference norms, and «others» as incomprehensible, non-motivated and inadequate. The article discusses the cultural codes of Russia and China, examines the influence of national way of thinking on the vision of different reality and mentality, analyzes patterns of behaviour and judgment, which have a negative impact on the effectiveness of communication in various areas of joint activity. The article also describes recent intercultural contacts and highlights the most significant differences between the two countries. The article may be of interest to specialists and teachers in the field of intercultural communication, since it gives an idea of the manifestations of national and cultural identity in the individual, in his behaviour and in his speech. The article explores the reasons for negative impact on intercultural contacts in the recent period.

Abstract:
Man/machine confronts us immediatly with a philosophical paradox of which Cartesian thought is the best testimony. This paradox which includes many “traditional” expressions (in particular the soul/body, life/death opposition) acquires a new intensity and image in contempory sport in so far as, through it, the body/machine tradition returns both as an inevitability and a form of cultural remorse. The relationship between the spirit and the body then appears much more complex than foreseen. Automatism (a generic concept) gives access to new links between these two terms, which philosophy, medical history and contemprorary thechnology offer us. In all these ways, topically but also recurrently, the automatised and sports body becomes a heuristic model which makes it possible to establish a relationship with reality other than that too generally imposed upon us. That relationship is phenomenological in nature and retains a complexity which reveals the cultural quality of dynamic and sports activity.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the presence of an intertext between literary prose and political essay writing by a representative of the French Catholic literary revival of the first half of the 20th century. - Georges Bernanos - within the limits of modern intergenre French literature. The example is the collection of essays by the French-speaking writer Juan Asensio. However, the broader context of the reactualization of modernist writing in the contemprorary literary process is shown. The metamodernist sensibility of the 2000s is considered to be a result of the end of the dominance of the postmodernist discourse, its main theorists are investigated and the reasons for its appearance are shown. The dialogic character of metamodernism with the clue ideas of both modernism and postmodernism is noted, which is a middle way between modernist enthusiasm and postmodernist irony and skepticism, between hope and melancholy, between empathy and apathy, between truth and relativism, between totality and fragmentation, between experience and omniscience. Linguistic etymology and semantic plurality of the concept of “metamodernism” at the epistemological, ontological and historical levels are shown. The basic characteristics of the metamodernist worldview are named, such as: the return of metanarratives, belief in the truth, sincerity, empathy, the return ofhistory, the seriousness of religious experience, the search for the real, the importance of subjective experience. On the basis of these categories, the intertextual connection of the texts of Bernanos and Asensio is revealed according to four categories based on G. Genette’s narratology. It is about architextuality, thus citation at the genre level, narrative and poetic-stylistic closeness, explicit citation and allusions, and Bernanos’ meta-literary criticism provided in a comparative way. It is proved that the writing of Georges Bernanos became not only an intertext, but also a productive pretext of modern French literature, although the radical prophetism of the former was turned into a voice that just found the right to the truth and sincerity.

Abstract:
In this article, we are trying to grasp the role of hisroricism in the understanding of epistemology in the late of XX century. From Bacon to enlightenment, it has been understood that the only criterion of science based on natural sciences. The extent of science has also been determined as study according to the method of the natural sciences, therefore the sciences concerned with history and society has also determined according to method of the natural sciences. In this article authors aims to introduce to movement called Historicism. Which is emerged in XIX century as a critical viewpoint against classical approach to the science. Most influential figure of this movement was German thinker Wilhelm Dilthey. Dilthey had an anti-positivist attitude towards the established methodology by natural science. Which was saying that in order to be a science every researcher must have rigorous set of rules and their research must based on experiment results, observable facts, and objective evidence. Starting from Dilthey and with help of other philosophical schools new movement called historicism starts its journey to establishing new methodology to human and social science. And this movement made a classification of science. They divided science into natural and spiritual science. Each of science has its own methods and object of study. They believed that to social and human study we cannot apply natural science methods of research due to it is not a physical or biological subject but it is social life and human destiny and history. Considering this process of change, is it possible to talk about historicism as a contemporary epistemological approach? As a methodology, can we talk about history in the separation of positive science? What is the subject of history in social and human sciences? By moving from this questions, we will try to understand the role of historicism in the contemprory philosophy on the hermeneutical phenomenological approach.

Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Management and Economics, 2003. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-1870.

Abstract:

From the beginning of nineties, when significant changes took place, Russia began to elaborate new environmental policy and designed new patterns for responding the environmental problems. The paper tried to make a contribution to our understanding of environmental policy and policy processes within the Russia in general terms and to the nature of environmental agenda setting in Pskov region in more specific terms. This thesis is therefore explores environmental agenda setting process in Russia taking into consideration contemporary trends in the analysis of policy- making, such as inclusion of non-state actors as well as role of ideas shaping actors attitudes and behaviour. The purpose of the thesis is to study the relationship between transnational forces and interactions, national policy and local political developments and the role of various agents and institutions in agenda setting of the regional environmental policy-making. The frame of reference is constituted by a theoretical combination of the agenda-setting model with constructivist approach in order to broaden our investigation of the implications of environmental policy-making, impact of political culture upon construction of environmental issues, and transformations in the public policy. By focusing on Pskov region case, the paper identifies and discusses a number of reasons why environmental issues are found on the margins of the political agenda. A central argument is that in the absence of effective governance in the Pskov region, international agents together with regional interest groups formulate environmental agenda. The paper concludes that, even though, the mentality of environmentalism is set through the foreign assistance, the processes of learning from international cooperation may contribute to attainment of regional environmental objectives.

Cherruet, Sébastien. "Édouard Albert (1910-1968) : l'oeuvre complexe d'un architecte moderne." Thesis, Paris 1, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA01H041.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comprehensive study of Édouard Albert’s work. After graduating in architecture at the École des beaux-arts in 1937, Édouard Albert (1910-1968) became one of the champions of Modernity in France. During the Second World War, he drew up urban plans for the French Commissariat technique à la reconstruction immobilière and founded an association claiming the legacy of the medieval Compagnon workmanship tradition. During the post-war Reconstruction, he drew inspiration from the aircraft industry to design homes, while exploring also the possibilities offered by pre-stressed concrete. At the 1954 Salon des Arts ménagers, he presented the “Minimax” wooden house, echoing the research by Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) on prefabrication. After 1955, in collaboration with the young engineer Jean-Louis Sarf (1928-2004), Édouard Albert developed a concept of tubular metal frame. In 1958, he received the Grand Prix awarded by the Cercle d’études architecturales and started building the first Parisian skyscraper (completed in 1961). André Malraux supported the “synthesis of the arts” advocated by Édouard Albert through his project for the “Jean Vilar Amphitheater” (1958-1968) – a synthesis demonstrated in particular in the so-called gril of the Jussieu Campus he designed (1963- 1968). In keeping with the architectural tradition of constructive Rationalism, and building a theory of option sur le vide (“an option on space”), Édouard Albert connected the expression of structures to an aesthetics of transparency. His kinetic art finds an embodiment in the seat he developed with the Mobilier National (1967). The complexity and contradictions of his architecture truly crystallize in the artificial “metabolist” island he thought up for Monaco (1965-1968)

Abstract:
This chapter examines the engagements with Marx that appear in Agamben’s analyses of praxis, history and inoperativity. Whyte begins by analysing Agamben’s treatment of Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts in Man without Content and Infancy and History, before turning to his claim, in The Kingdom the Glory, that Marx secularises the theological paradigm of oikonomia. The chapter then draws on Althusser to argue that there is a major break between the young Marx’s analysis of labour and his later analysis in Capital Volume 1, and that the former obscures the historical specificity of labour under capitalism. Whyte charges Agamben’s genealogy of oikonomia, which traces a continuity between the Greek oikos and contemproary capitalism, with a similar lack of historical specificity, for conflating the labour of the slave with that of the proletarian.
