Abstract:
Modern Buddhist education in Asia is an organic part of the project of Buddhist modernization pursued by a number of Buddhist reformers, often as a response to the challenges of imperialism, capitalism, and Christian proselytism. While in some cases (notably in colonial Burma) the resistance to colonialism could translate into the resistance of the monastery schools to the introduction of “modern” subjects, in most cases Buddhist educational systems attempted to reinvent themselves, using modern techniques of teaching and evaluation as well as modern institutional forms—for example, that of a sectarian Buddhist university. Such a reinvention brought considerable successes in many places, notably Japan and South Korea, but modernization success is rife with inherent pitfalls. Once integrated into standardized modern educational marketplace, Buddhist educational institutions risk quickly losing their specifically religious character, with religion remaining as simply one compartmentalized and professionalized subject. In the countries where modernization has been state-driven (typically, People’s Republic of China), Buddhist educational modernization often implies close cooperation with—and ultimately co-optation by—the state institutions.

Abstract:
This title will give students and other readers a clear understanding of the true state of public and private education systems in the United States by refuting falsehoods, misunderstandings, and exaggerations—and confirming the validity of other assertions. This work is part of a series that uses evidence-based documentation to examine the veracity of claims and beliefs about high-profile issues in American culture and politics. Each book in the Contemporary Debates series is intended to puncture rather than perpetuate myths that diminish our understanding of important policies and positions; to provide needed context for misleading statements and claims; and to confirm the factual accuracy of other assertions. This particular volume examines beliefs, claims, and myths about public and private K–12 education in the United States. Issues covered include categories of public and private schools and variations in academic performance and socioeconomic status therein; controversies surrounding school choice, including school vouchers and charter schools; accountability and assessment of private and public schools; debates about school environment, safety, and curricula; and teacher and administrator quality. All of these issues are examined in individualized entries, with objective responses grounded in up-to-date evidence.

Abstract:
The publication contains the authors‘ vision on contemporary challenges in education. It was compiled according to the results of International Education Forum held in Lviv (Ukraine) on 16–17 September, 2021. The event was organized by the National Agency of the Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps of the Foundation for the Development of the Education System (FRSE) and the Faculty of International Relations of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, which celebrates its 360th anniversary this year. The Forum focused on challenges in the development of educa-tion system in the face of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and COVID-19 pandemic. It also addressed the issue of quality in formal and informal education, which has a direct impact on the competen-cies of young people under the challenges of the 21st century. The Forum also covered the Erasmus+ program within the new financial perspective of the European Union 2021–2027. Internation-al educational mobility is an important instrument for the develop-ment of young people, which should be supported by governmental and non-governmental institutions, educational institutions and business. The Forum provided a platform for discussion and exchange of experience between representatives of different sectors.

Abstract:
This open access Handbook offers a unique and unprecedented global comparative account of student representation in higher education. It provides a systematic and structured range of specially commissioned chapters reflecting on the history, contemporary practices and current debates on student representation in higher education. The chapters analyse the organisational characteristics and political activities of representative student associations within multilevel governance of higher education and map opportunities for student representatives to influence higher education institutions and higher education policies. The Handbook re-examines and further develops the existing theoretical concepts and analytical lenses in existing research on systems of student representation and organisational models of student representative associations. It depicts empirical insights from 30 countries from all world regions, from 6 regional student federations and the Global Student Forum. The volume is unique in bringing together established scholars with a highly diverse group of current and former student leaders, specially trained and empowered to conduct research for this Handbook. This is a major contribution to the study of higher education, and politics and governance of higher education specifically. Kinchin, Ian M. How to Mend a University. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350338678.

Full text
Abstract:
The contemporary literature on higher education tells a story of a system that is widely perceived to be broken. Students are sceptical of the system that they are increasingly asked to pay into, and staff are disillusioned by rampant managerialism, or burnt out. There is an alternative view that is emerging in the literature, that of the ecological university. This book builds on established ecological models that can be applied to social systems, particularly the adaptive cycle. It links these ideas to key theoretical stances from across the educational literature to create an epistemological consilience across the divide between structuralist-poststructuralist educational research literatures. It is written with a consideration of the practical moves that can be undertaken within an institution to develop a healthier environment in which sustainable pedagogies can be nurtured. Kinchin argues that the ecological university may be seen as a way to ‘mend’ the current system so institutions can justify the use of popular terms like sustainability, inclusivity and wellbeing in an ecologically authentic and demonstrable way. The book includes a Foreword written by Martyn Kingsbury, Professor of Higher Education and Director of the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship, Imperial College London, UK.
