Abstract:
It is accepted, within the framework of the contemporary Catalan cultural system, that Pompeu Fabra was the architect of modern literary Catalan. The contemporary institutionalization of the Catalan language is therefore a product of the 20th century: a work of Fabra and Noucentisme. Yet before Fabra there was already modern Catalan literature, and there is no institutionalization of literature without an also institutionalized literary language. How is this contradiction resolved? The noucentists conveyed the idea that 19th-century literature was «languageless» literature, but a new look at the past compels us to rethink our views, and to ask ourselves whether reality requires further nuances. In this work, a proposal is made to periodise the progressive institutionalization of contemporary Catalan as a literary language, in a span that begins in 1859 and ends in 1913, with the implementation of the Fabra reform.

Summary: This paper provides a range of both synchronic and diachronic perspectives on the Catalan go-past, known in the literature as the perfet perifràstic. The first chapter presents an overview of the use and distribution of the feature in contemporary Catalan; the second chapter discusses the diachronic and synchronic attestation of the feature in other Romance languages, Occitan in particular. In chapter 3, the paper summarizes the state of the research on the grammaticalization process that underlies the go-past. In chapter 4, finally, the hypothesis that the feature diffused from (Old) Occitan into (Old) Catalan is postulated and underpinned with both historical and linguistic data. Summary: In this article we compare the contemporary legend known as «revenge rape» with the literary versions present in several works of Catalan literature, such as the famous novel Estudi en lila by Maria-Antònia Oliver, and the short narrative that is at its origin, «Fils trencats»; the play Anna, o la venjança by Manuel Crespo Serrat, the short novel by Inés Vidal Farré El metge i un gos d’atura, and the story «Bèsties carnivores» by Carlota Gurt. We also mention some other cultural reflections of this urban legend, such as the Greek mythology, the rape and revenge films, and some specific contemporary films. Finally, the matching key points are extracted and a common pattern is formed. Keywords: urban legend, Catalan literature, Maria-Antònia Oliver, Estudi en lila, rapeand revenge, castration

Abstract:
The Catalan children's author Josep Vallverdú published two crossover stories based on Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island. Les raons de Divendres (Friday's Reasons) (2003) gives an account of the episode of Crusoe and Friday told from the point of view of the servant, whereas El testament de John Silver (John Silver's Will) (2007) deals with the adventures of the pirate after searching for the treasure in the Caribbean. This paper demonstrates how Vallverdú uses his experience as a writer and translator to transform two canonical novels, through transposition into a contemporary context, in a way that facilitates an interaction between Catalan literature and English literature. In keeping with this exploration of literary tradition, the two sequels are also analysed as twenty-first century expressions of a Western literary tradition that abounds in adventure stories set at sea.

Abstract:
In recent years several projects have emerged that address Catalan culture from a spatial point of view. This article aims to review the theoretical framework of what is known as the spatial turn in order to evaluate its main contributions, and some potential future orientations, in Catalan cultural studies. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the main approaches inside spatial studies. In the second part, a selection of studies on Catalan culture and literature is reviewed from the perspective of their connections with spatial studies. Finally, the third part presents three case studies focused on examples from Catalan poetry, film, and science fiction and interprets them from three different spatial perspectives: the first based on the phenomenological perspective, the second on the methodology of emotional and sensory geography and the concept of cognitive mapping , and the third on the spatial figurations of postmodern empire. This final section aims to broaden the applications of spatial analysis, extending it to the interpretation of an open, diverse selection of representations of contemporary Catalan culture.

Abstract: Càrcer was a copyist from the 17th century that wrote a proem in verse of great interest for the study of the transmission and the valoration of catalan poetry from the Barroque period. This article studies this introductory poem from two points of view. First of all, the article points out the importance of this poem in order to understand the relationship between three miscellaneous manuscripts that have survived into our present day. This gives us more elements for the consideration of the context for some of the poems included in these volumes, and it can also help us to establish the authorship of some of the poems that would otherwise remain unclear. On the other hand, this poem is also a singular artifact when it comes to the consideration of the authors of catalan barroque poetry by a contemporary author that is therefore removed from future judgement. All of this has been complemented with the edition of this poem, which had been unedited until now, by following textual criticism. Keywords: catalan literature, barroque poetry, manuscripts, proem, textual criticism.

Abstract:
Joan Fuster (Sueca, 1922–1992) was one of the most important essayists of Catalan literature. Diccionari per a ociosos (Dictionary for the Idle), published in 1964, has been widely seen as one of his masterpieces, not only because of the wide range of topics he deals with, but also because of his witty and contemporary insight. Despite this critical acclaim, many aspects of this book still deserve further research. In this article we try to study more deeply the sources of Dictionary for the Idle, focusing on Bertrand Russell’s In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays (1935). Beyond the similar titles, we think that Joan Fuster could have been inspired by Russell’s literary style and intellectual attitude, not only because of stylistic and thematic similarities, but also because of the attested references (among which we will comment on which of Russell’s books are kept in Fuster’s personal library). A direct rewriting between In Praise of Idleness… and Diccionari per a ociosos must be dismissed due to lack of written proof, as well as direct allusions, which do not appear whatsoever. However, our aim is to trace the link between these two authors and the influence that the former had on the latter, in the context of his general influence on both Spanish and Catalan contemporary essay.

Abstract:
Tackling violence against women in the theatre is often a controversial matter. To identify the ethical risks that victim representation may entail, we conduct a comparative analysis of two works about Ciudad Juárez’s feminicides staged in Barcelona: 2666 (2007), an adaptation of Roberto Bolaño’s novel directed by Àlex Rigola, and House of Strength (2011) by Angélica Liddell. This article argues that while Rigola reduces victims to mere sexual objects with no narrative of their own, Liddell places the voice and resilience of Mexicans in the foreground and represents their bodies respectfully. Adriana Nicolau is completing her doctoral studies on ‘Feminisms in contemporary Catalan theatre’ at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in Barcelona. Her publications include articles for Feminismo/s. Teresa Iribarren is an assistant professor at UOC, where she is the Director of the Catalan Literature, Publishing, and Society research group. Her current research focuses on narratives of violence and the promotion of human rights in literature.

Abstract:
This article explores the history and present state of the Occitan go-past. Also known as the perfet perifràstic, this is a characteristic and well-studied feature of the Catalan grammar (vaig cantar go.1sg.pres.ind-sing ‘I sang’), but its existence in Occitan has been ignored to the extent that Catalan is often erroneously thought to be the only Romance language with a go-past. In this article, we first explore the rise and distribution of the go-past in Old Occitan (ca. 13th to 16th centuries) and then focus on the presence of the construction in the contemporary Occitan dialects of Gascony and Guardia Piemontese (a village in Calabria, Italy). We discuss the semantic and morphological particularities of the construction in some detail for both dialects using data from a variety of (little-known) sources, including, for Guardia Piemontese, our own field data. Finally, we provide arguments for the hypothesis that the go-past developed first in Occitania and subsequently diffused into Catalan-speaking areas.

Abstract:
Paraules clau: Curial e Güelfa, no menys, italià, transferència lingüística, català Abstract: Curial and Guelfa reveals itself to us as quite a philological challenge when it comes to characterizing Catalan, which is rich in multilingualism and multiculturalism; and, even more so, if, considering the repercussion of this language model for contemporary Catalan, we examine the filigree of constructions with which it is woven. In this work, we look at the first and only documentation in Catalan of no menys with the concessive value of ‘even though, in spite of’. To do this, we turn to the historical lexicography of the environmental languages of Naples at the time (French and Italian) and to the literary sources (authors and texts, works, clichés and literary figures) from which the work. Thus, we will try to discern if, indeed, it is another Italianism, in this case, not observed until now. Alive in the author’s linguistic model, it seems that no menys was grafted onto an example of the Catalan of the Curial and Guelfa in the form of «language transfer». The article stresses mainly the comparison of the position of the clitic object pronouns with respect to finite verbs in two languages from the (Eastern) Pyrenees, Catalan and Occitan. The position of the weak pronoun in relation to the finite verb in Old Occitan and Old Catalan shows interesting differences to the modern varieties of these languages and to Old French. Both languages allow, like contemporary European Portuguese, the positioning of the object pronoun directly after the finite verb in unmarked main sentences. Unlike in Old French this applies irrespective of verb-first-constructions with the verb in the absolute front position (socalled Tobler-Mussafia Law), where in all medieval Romance languages a postposition occurs.

Abstract:
The history and reception of translations of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain form the basis of the discussion in this article. Eighty-four translations of modern and contemporary Chinese literature were published in Spain – either in Spanish or in Catalan – between 1949 and 2010. Using this under-researched corpus as a starting-point, this article explores two interrelated premises: the marginalisation of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain and the mediation of its Spanish reception by Anglophone and Francophone literary systems. To do so, the study investigates the history of translations, pays attention to the evolution of types of translation (direct and indirect), and uses concrete examples from paratexts (back covers and prefaces) and translation reviews. After a discussion of the predominance of indirect translations, three recurring motifs inferred from an analysis of the paratexts and reviews are presented: (a) a preference for documentary value, (b) an insistence on difference and (c) an emphasis on politics and trauma (censorship, dissidence and the Cultural Revolution). In addition, I demonstrate the connections between these recurring motifs in the Spanish reception of Chinese literature in relation to European orientalism and area studies. Ultimately, the recent history of translations of modern and contemporary Chinese literature in Spain helps us to reflect on the complexity and hierarchical nature of literary exchanges on a global scale.

Abstract:
The motive of the «disinherited widow» has found until now little consideration in literature. Therefore it is interesting to study two novels published within a few decades of each other and which address this problem: Middlemarch (1871/1872), one of the well-known novels by George Eliot, and Pilar Prim (1906) by Narcís Oller. Although it has not been proven, it seems plausible that Oller knew the English novel, because he read a lot of contemporary literature and, besides this, maintained close contact with French literary circles, where the French translations of Eliot’s novels were familiar. This article studies the socio-cultural differences, analogies and consequences of the forced renunciation of the deceased husband’s fortune of two wealthy widows, because a codicile in testament hinders a second marriage. The main problem is not this renunciation, but that the sec ond husband is poor, and so the widow must choose love, poverty and social isolation or wealth, loneliness and social appreciation. Tourism is a central theme in theatre production in Mallorca today. This article analyses a corpus of twelve theatre plays that draw on different formats, ranging from drama text to interactive performances in the public space, to explore the importance of tourism in the redefinition of local culture. The purpose of this article is to analyse how these productions deal with the consensus on an idea of collective heritage, the construction of an identity interfered with by tourist culture, and the representation of a new model of political agency promoted by both environmental activists and artistic creators. On a more metatheoretical level, this article aims to contribute to shaping Catalan cultural studies as an academic and interdisciplinary field more observant of the geopolitics of the region and the local effects of global dynamics, such as those caused by tourism.

Abstract:
This special issue brings together a series of in-depth case studies of commemorative discourses and practices dedicated to some of the most important figures in contemporary Catalan literature from the beginning of the 19th century onwards, which contributed to transform selected writers (including Antoni Capmany, Jaume Balmes, Jacint Verdaguer, Àngel Guimerà and Josep Maria de Sagarra, as well as female authors, such as Josepa Massanés, Mercè Rodoreda, Anna Murià, Maria Aurèlia Cap-many and Montserrat Roig) into collective memory sites for the Catalan community. It aims to contribute critically to the burgeoning international scholarship on “cultural saints”, that is, the (generally male) writers, artists and intellectuals marked out as representative of cultural-national community identities in the age of consolidation of the nation-state. The bodies and corpora of the symbolic figures and cultural icons examined across the nine articles commissioned and collected here both served to confer legitimacy on diverse projects and agents in the public sphere and were the site of sometimes heightened debate over contested cultural memory narratives. In other words, they show the ways in which Catalan commemorative practices and processes are both a vehicle for the construction of a distinctive community imaginary as well as reflecting the divisions and dissensus between different agents and sub-groups, according to social, political, geographical, linguistic, generational and gender affiliation, among other factors.

Summary: The critical reception of Jesus Moncada’s work has been determined by critical debate that opposed rural literature and urban literature in the eighties of the twentieth century. From this perspective, the narrative of Moncada has been identified with the desire to preserve the memory of Mequinensa, disappeared under the water. The paper proposes a reading of author’s work from the historiographic metafiction in which the exercise of memory is not to be understood as the desire to preserve against forgetting a lost world, but as a question about mechanisms of understanding of the real one, about conditionings and limits on access to knowledge of history and about relationship between fiction and reality. The main resources of historiographic metafiction analysed are: disrepute of memory, fantastic elements, fragmentation of narrative by marginal characters of story, intertextuality, loss of reliance on narrator and irony. When Llorenç Villalonga published Mort de dama (1931), the character of Aina Cohen offended representatives of the Escola Mallorquina, who interpreted it as an attack on autochthonous literature. Although Villalonga responded by affirming that it was his alter ego and although some contemporary critics have related her vaguely with Freud o have associated her with a Spenglerian concept of art, Aina Cohen has never been entirely freed from the condition of a simple, merciless caricature of the Escola Mallorquina. The goal of this article is to explore the complexity of this figure (a Jewish woman, lesbian, Catalan writer), who bears some characteristics of Josef Breuer’s Anna O. and appears as a point of intersection for various anti-Semitic, homophobic and misogynist discourses.

Abstract:
According to the French historian Pierre Nora, the “collapse of memory” in contemporary society has caused the dissappearance of “milieux de mémorie, authentic surroundings of memory.” Given that we no longer live in a society in which “memory is experienced collectively,” it is necessary for us to create lieux de mémorie, artificial places that act as a Space to remember. This article takes Can Traver (a country house situated in La Garrotxa) as an example and provides an interpretation of the country home as a lieu de mémoire, as a place that reflects the social, economic and legal structures of the rural Catalan territories. The arquitectural typology of the house symbolizes the rebirth of determining values of the history of Catalonia, or, to put it another way, it permits the attribution of a series of meanings related to the Catalan national identity, such as the rural origins of Catalonia or the importance of the family and the insitution of the hereu (first born). These traditional values and country way of life find their architectural translation in the country home. For this reason it is possible to explain the expansion of rural tourism, agrotourism and ecotourism throughout the Catalan territory. This new type of tourism is not simply a way of profiting from rural properties that have lost their agricultural function but rather it is a promesse de bonheur, the potential to experience something authentic, traditional and belonging to the past (even though this experience has nothing to do with the real life of the country or the people who live and work there).

Abstract:
Dangor (Johannesburg, 1948-2020) and Vassanji (Nairobi, b1950) are two contemporary Indian-African (“Afrindian”) diasporic writers who share a hybrid combination of Indianness and Africanness. Both writers have been translated into Spanish and, in the case of Vassanji, Catalan. The number of translations is rich enough to establish many description-based contrasts, and the proposal of future guidelines for translating Afrindian writers. The description takes into account the powerful autobiographical overtones typical of African writing, and describes how they have been made available to Spanish readers. A representative sample of exoticizing textual units from the original texts will be compared with their translation solutions in order to explore if exoticizing is the right method for this kind of postcolonial African Indian literature. The results indicate that exoticizing has been clearly favoured by the translators

Abstract:
Abstract Based on the existence of some structural conflict between Spanish and Catalan in certain points of the syntax, this study tests the hypothesis about the influence of the latter on the distribution of queísmo uses (‘Me alegro que vengas’ [‘I’m glad you come’]) in the Spanish spoken in an eastern peninsular variety in contact with Catalan. Using the tools of comparative sociolinguistics, and the analysis of three corpora of contemporary Spanish, the study exhaustively examines the conditioning of this variable. The starting hypothesis is that the influence of the contact can be inferred from the comparison between different magnitudes derived from a multivariable statistical analysis. In addition to several linguistic and extra-linguistic predictors previously analysed in the literature, we also take into account other factor groups that may be particularly informative about that potential influence. Thus, from a structural point of view, we consider the contrast between: a) conjunctive queísmo in verbal structures, in which the structural conflict with Spanish is more evident (‘me acuerdo (de) que vino con su mujer/em recorde Ø que va vindre amb la seua dona’ [‘I remember that he came with his wife’]; and b) pronominal queísmo in relative sentences, in which the coincidence between both languages is greater (‘el día (en) que nos conocimos / el día (en) què ens vam conéixer’). From an extralinguistic perspective, the incidence of two additional factors is also examined: a) the speech community (without contact (Madrid/Alcalá) vs. in contact (Castellón), and b) the main language of the speakers (Spanish/Catalan-Valencian). The results of several mixed-effect regression analyses performed do not support the hypothesis of contact. The distributional differences between the above-mentioned groups are minimal, and in no case significant. On the other hand, the variation is basically affected by the same structural and non-structural predictors, regardless of the speech community or the ethnolinguistic group examined. Even the few divergences that are observed point in a direction contrary to that expected by the contact hypothesis. The study concludes with some potential explanations about these results and the contrast with other cases of syntactic convergence with Catalan.

Paraules clau: Renaixença valenciana, romanticisme, narrativa històrica, Manuela Agnés Rausell i Soriano, segle XIXAbstract: Manuela Agnés Rausell i Soriano (València, 1839-1918) was one of the most relevant female writers of the Valencian Renaixença, who contributed to this cultural movement as a sponsor and with a vast and diverse work: poetry, essays, drama and prose in Catalan and Spanish. She is considered an innovative figure in Catalan fiction, bearing in mind the outlook of Valencian prose during the 19th century, marked by testimonies of little literary ambition. Rausell wrote historical fiction, and three legends are known to be written by her: La llegenda del Puig (unpublished), La mort d’en Ramon Boïl (1883) and Centelles i Solers o un amor entre dos odis (1884). These legends boast several characteristics typical of historical romanticism and show the resources, themes and model of cultured language promoted by the Jocs Florals contest. Rausell intended to write prose following the premise for learned poetry and this allows to consider her contribution as an attempt to innovate the genre with respect to the contemporary prose written in Catalonia and in other European languages. Keywords: Valencian Renaixença, romanticism, historical fiction, Manuela Agnés Rausell i Soriano, 19th century

Paraules clau: Curial e Güelfa, català antic, selecció de l’auxiliar, construccions impersonals relatives, datiu experimentadorAbstract: One of the characteristics of Old Catalan that has not been preserved, except for some dialectal remains, is double auxiliary of perfect tenses, which were built with haver ‘have’ or ésser ‘be’ (e.g. ha parlat vs. és arribat). Haver occurred in transitive and agentive intransitive constructions, while ésser was used in statives, eventives, resultatives of change of state and change of location, pronominal intransitives, direct reflexives and passives. Although the substitution of ésser for haver is a process developed mainly during Modern Age and culminated in contemporary times, signs of it can already be detected in Medieval Catalan. In this paper, starting from the extraction and classification of perfects in Curial e Güelfa, we identify the samples in which haver occurs instead of ésser, we analyze the factors that may have favored it and we relate them to the entry routes of haver indicated in previous works. We conclude that Curial e Güelfa firmly maintains double auxiliary, innovation being practically restricted to the relative impersonal constructions with romandre ‘remain’, sobrar ‘be left over’, venir ‘come’, esdevenir ‘become’ and succeir ‘happen’, which contain a dative experiencer as a logical subject. Keywords: Curial e Güelfa, Old Catalan, auxiliary selection, relative impersonal constructions, dative experiencer

Abstract:
Abstract: The Valencian writer Víctor Labrado (Sueca, 1956) has emerged as one of the great contemporary references in the field of the non-fiction novel in Catalan, a narrative subgenre that combines the fictional intention with real testimonial speeches. However, can Labrado’s capital books –peculiar, idiosyncratic and unusual– be considered also, without subterfuges or hints, historical novels? Broadly speaking: are his Spanish civil war plots grafted with interviews, generous doses of documentary journalism and almost absolute absence of fiction, historical novels? Its techniques and style are no impediment to say so, if we pay attention to the topoi agreed by the specialized critic. In fact, these novels become, in short, a living testimony of our past time: they rescue from oblivion the experiences and adventures of anonymous people, from the most universal particularity, and the Valencian reality of a past century stigmatized by the civil conflict of 1936 and the consequent dictatorship. Is that enough, however, to attribute this label to the rest of his literary works? This paper analyses the techniques, the plots and the concepts of Labrado’s essential books to determine what part of his nonfiction novels may or may not be considered historical. Keywords: Víctor Labrado, nonfiction novel, historical novel, Catalan literature, Valencian

Abstract:
Paraules clau: adverbis temporals i aspectuals, català antic, Curial e Güelfa, llengües en contacte, gramaticalitzacióAbstract: The adverb totavia is a singular word in the language of the Curial e Güelfa, both because of its frequency and because of the values it presents in the work. This has already been observed in several previous studies, which have considered this exceptionality as a result of interference from French or Italian, or which have qualified it as cultism. In this study, we intend to analyse the use of the word in the novel and to formulate a hypothesis about its singularity. To do so, we will characterise the adverb semantically and functionally in Old Catalan, with a diachronic perspective (12th-16th century), and we will contrast the results obtained with those of the Curial e Güelfa. On the other hand, and taking as a basis several studies on the derivatives of TOTA VIA in French, Italian and Spanish, we will compare the results obtained with the data on these adverbs in the 15th century. In this study, we conclude that the characterisation of the word in the Curial e Güelfa does not correspond to that of totavia in Old Catalan nor to that of the French parallel; it is closer to the characterisation of the adverb in contemporary Spanish and, above all, to that of the Italian tuttavia. We conclude, therefore, that we are dealing with a –possible– new semantic Italianism. Abstract:
The thousands of Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil sent to Barcelona in order to prevent the referendum legislated by the Catalan Parliament on 6 and 7 September 2017 raised major questions about the fragility of Spanish democracy. The subsequent display of police violence on 1 October and the imprisonment and criminalisation of political opponents for the archaic offences of ‘rebellion’ and ‘sedition’ looked even less ‘democratic’. Indeed, those events in Catalonia constitute a remarkable moment in recent European history. This article uses the literature on ‘postfascism’ (developed in this journal and elsewhere) to analyse this remarkable moment and develop its social connections to the parallel re-emergence of fascist violence on the streets and the appearance of fascist symbolism in mainstream politics in Spain. The literature on postfascism identifies contemporary fascism as a specifically cultural phenomenon, but generally fails to identify how the conditions that sustain the far right originate inside the state. In order to capture this historical turn more concretely as a process in which state institutions and processes of statecraft are intimately involved, we argue that the Spanish state is postfascist. The article offers a brief critique of the way the concept of postfascism has been deployed, and, through an empirical reading of the historical development of Spanish state institutions, it proposes a modified frame that can be used to understand the situation in Catalonia.

Abstract:
The poems of Pepe Sales (Barcelona, 1954-1994) are marked by his experience as a homosexual, drug addict and AIDS sufferer. He was a key member of the Barcelona counterculture, along with Pau Riba, Pau Malvido and Genís Cano, and has gone down in history as one of the poètes maudits of contemporary Catalan literature. The aim of this article is to analyse the representation of pain and distress in his poems and songs, with some additional references to his paintings. To this end, I draw on the critical work of Susan Sontag, Sara Ahmed, David Le Breton and Joanna Bourke, who conceive pain in general, not as a private and personal experience, but as a cultural and historical event that creates identity and community bonds. The main strategies used by Sales to convey his pain are the scream, animalisation, weapons and wounds and, especially, religious martyrdom. The basic finding is that the poet’s pain is not simply a testimony to the suffering of a lost generation of junkies and misfits that the official account of the transition from Francoism to democracy has stigmatised. On the contrary, it reminds us of an unfair medical, political and financial system that inflicted great suffering on them.

Abstract:
This article investigates one of the most important and erotically explicit early modern Spanish texts: Fernando de Rojas’s La Celestina (1499/1507). Highlighting the dynamics of the three sex acts depicted in the plot, it argues that intercourse can be read as a negotiation of the text’s main values: (courtly) love, honour, and money. While scholars have elaborated on the metaphor of the wheel of fortune in La Celestina, this article suggests that the wheel was more than a trope for life’s vicissitudes; it operated as a structural tool in the text, a metaphor rendered material via Ramón Llull’s (ca. 1232–1315) ars combinatoria. Applying the Catalan philosopher’s mnemonic device demonstrates how the text’s values are transferred from men to women and thereby shift their semantics. While the resulting inversions must have amused contemporary audiences, they also reveal the tensions of a transforming society.

Abstract:
Summary: The social and cultural transformations that occur in occidental Europe in the later Middle Ages have an impact on the diversification and diffusion of knowledge. Through the increasing number of scientific texts in vernacular language, knowledge formerly reserved for the clergy becomes accessible for literate laymen. The importance of this phenomenon becomes evident with authors such as Ausiàs March, who incorporate into their literary language philosophical, theological, medical or technical notions and concepts. The present paper proposes an interpretation of March’s Cant CXIII which focuses on his use of what we call the ‘discourses of knowledge’ (Wissensdiskurse). With regard to the main argument of the text – the capacity of man to understand the truth is limited, human knowledge is vain – the poet follows the ideas propagated by the church. However, at the same time, he uses these scientific discourses (above all notions and concepts of Aristotelian psychology and ethics) for his description and analysis of human behaviour. What at first glance seems to be a paradox, is, in fact, characteristic of the contemporary attempts to reconcile the new knowledge about man and cosmos with the Christian world vision. Yet, the tension between ‘human science’ and ‘divine science’ (which intensified in the following centuries) is perceptible in March’s poem. Paraules clau: Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas, narrativa, català contemporani, model de llengua, normativaAbstract: This paper describes the linguistic model in Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas’ prose by means of the analysis of some morphosyntactic, lexical and phonetical spelling uses taken from Matèria de Bretanya and from the short story «El llamp i la sageta de records». The historical-social context in which the author published both texts and the success achieved by Matèria de Bretanya among valencian readers justifies the relevance of examining the linguistic choices of the writer. As we aim at proving, Sánchez-Cutillas chooses to use a model that includes in standard language Valencian forms enjoying prestige due to their learned uses and some dialectisms form the region of the Marina Baixa, without giving up the maximum rapprochement with the rest of local ways of speaking within the linguistic domain. Generally speaking, the model of this writer coincides with that supported by some Valencian grammarians and literary figures of that time, such as Sanchis Guarner or Enric Valor. Keywords: Carmelina Sánchez-Cutillas, prose, contemporary Catalan, language model, normative

Abstract:
Francesc Eiximenis, a Catalan polyhistor, Franciscan, and writer, left a significant mark on 14th-century literature in the Crown of Aragon. Well-educated in influential academic centres of pre-Renaissance Europe, he did not limit his treatises to religious matters alone. Instead, he explored a wide range of topics related to secular, everyday life. This paper examines one such theme: warfare, which was considered of prime importance during that time, and Eiximenis dedicated part of his most ambitious work, Lo Crestià (The Christian), to this subject. The paper consists of two parts: a translation of selected fragments from Dotzè llibre del Crestià (The Twelve Book of the Christian) and an introductory section, which discusses the style and sources of the text, as well as Eiximenis’ original concept of soldier training and its significance for the art of war. To facilitate analysis, the war-related portion of Dotzè (chapters 213 to 337) is herein separated and described as the Treaty on Military Affairs. This approach also highlights its strong reliance on ancient authors such as Vegetius (Epitoma rei militaris), Aristotle, and Ptolemy. The translation presented in the second part of the article is the first Polish version of the Treaty on Military Affairs’ fragments related to soldier training. The text consists of chapters 213, 217, and 222–227, accompanied by commentary notes that compare them to source fragments from Vegetius’ work, and explain passages that may pose challenges for contemporary readers. As there is no modern critical edition of this part of Dotzè, the basis for the translation is the incunabulum printed in 1484 by Lambert Palmart in Valencia.

Abstract:
Today in the scientific literature there are active discussions about the architectural style of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Gaudi’s architecture is often referred to as organic or bionic. The presence of the bionic style in Gaudi’s architecture is supported by the fact that the Sagrada Familia has complex shapes, which are known today as helicoids, hyperboloids and hyperbolic paraboloids. Gaudi borrows these forms from nature and bases the construction of columns, vaults and other structural elements of the temple. However, the architectural image of the Sagrada Familia was also influenced by Gaudi’s existential experiences, which were the result of many factors. First of all, it is the emotional experiences of childhood. Other important factors in shaping the image of the Sagrada Familia were Catalan modernism, which emerged at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries in Barcelona, the influence of German Expressionism, the interaction of contemporary Gaudi architects and the influence of Goethe’s philosophy on A. Gaudi. Goethe’s organic worldview, which was based on the understanding of the world as a living monadic whole, revolutionized not only philosophy but also architecture. The fundamental principle of the Sagrada Familia is a kind of proteism, the desire for constant renewal, expressed through both the interior and exterior of the building. The transformation of living integral formations, depicted on the three facades of the Sagrada Familia, demonstrates a series of metamorphoses of pra-phenomenon (Urphanomen – germ. after Goethe) and metamorphosis of the human soul under the influence of Christ’s teachings. Antonio Gaudi’s architecture is special for its emotional content, which hides the author’s emotional conflicts and contradictions. Opposing one to the natural environment and emphasizing harmonious coexistence with it is an oxymoron that the author laid down in the architectural forms of the Sagrada Familia. The Church of the Holy Family can be seen as a symbiosis of advanced technology and creative expression, the skill of presenting the author’s architectural ideas and happy coincidences. The artist's original vision and understanding of the relationship between the anthropogenic and natural environment in the creation of architectural space, the place and role of man in this process determined his exclusively individual architectural style.

Abstract:
This article aims to discuss the figuration of wars, taking into account fictional texts produced in the context of migratory flows. The first part is dedicated to a theoretical discussion. Its purpose is to problematize the nexus between wars and identitynarratives, based on three assumptions: (1) wars need a narrative mobilization to erupt, (2) members of a group need to mobilize this narrative for the representation of the self and (3) wars substantially modify the foundations of identity narratives. Inthe second part, the article uses the comparative methodology to discuss two contemporary novels, written in German: Tauben fliegen auf(2010) by Melinda Nadj Abonji and Jacob beschließt zu lieben(2011) by Catalin Dorian Florescu.

Abstract:
Spain was an anachronism in nineteenth-century Europe, politically unstable, underdeveloped in agriculture and industry, and dependent on contemporary economic centers. The city and the region of Barcelona are above all the leading region in the direction of modernity, which also arrived despite many retarding factors. But unlike the developed states of Europe, economic and social progress has so far been limited to a few regions. This leads to deep tensions between the leading region, Catalonia, and the political center, Madrid. From about 1880, Catalanism articulated these differences in development politically and nationally. So that, from a modern point of view, Catalans could use standard elements of national identity - such as their own history, language and literature.

Abstract:
The starting point for the reflexions is the epistemological postulate to understand "city" itself as a text that is characterized by alterity. According to the specific cultural-sociological prerequisites of the authors, this is not used as a "factual attribute" of aesthetic experience, but as a "methodological principle" with the aim of alienation. Based on the Barcelona novels by two contemporary French authors, it is shown how the construction of foreignness not only serves philosophical-epistemological or aesthetic, but also social innovation. While Claude Simon focuses more on the loss of a political utopia, Pieyre de Mandiargues’s novel deals explicitly with the situation of the Catalans under Franco. It examines how the foreign is experienced, where it becomes aesthetically productive and finally what meaning the foreign imagined in literature acquires in one's own considerations. A complex interaction between authors, their protagonists as personifications of the experience of others and the subject of the city as a carrier of alterity becomes obvious.

Abstract:
<p>The main objective of this article is to stress and to prove that the Latgalian national identity is the only national identity for a lot of citizens of Latvia and it is not the second or the additional identity that may be attributed only to secret service men inter alia.</p><p>My personal studies of official sources, literature and correspondence with officials of state institutions, etc. are at the basis of this article.</p><p>National identity is the person’s identity and sense of belonging to one state or to one nation, a feeling one shares with a group of people, regardless of one’s status of citizenship.</p><p>National identity is not inborn trait; various studies have shown that a person’s national identity is a direct result of the presence of elements from the „common points” in people’s daily lives: national symbols, language, national colours, the nation’s history, national consciousness, culture, music, cuisine, radio, television, etc.</p><p>There are cases where national identity collides with a person’s civil identity. For example, many Israeli Arabs associate themselves or are associated with the Arab or Palestinian nationality, while at the same time they are citizens of the state of Israel, which is in conflict with the Palestinians and with many Arab countries.</p><p>There are also cases in which the national identity of a particular group is oppressed by the government in the country where the group lives. A notable example was in Spain under the authoritarian dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939–1947) who abolished the official statute and recognition for the Basque, Galician, and Catalan languages for the first time in the history of Spain and returned to Spanish (Castillian) as the only official language of the State and education, although millions of citizens of Spain spoke other languages.</p><p>During the first independence period of Latvia in the thirties, the schools of Latgale used Latgalian as the language of instruction during the first four years, Latgalian language was taught as a subject starting with the third year twice a week. After the coup d’état on May 15, 1934 the Latgalian textbooks were withdrawn from use and even burnt.</p><p>There is enough evidence to prove that the Latvian nationalist elite was very unwilling to accept the spread of Latgalian both during the first period of independence and the multinational Soviet rule. The positive expression of one’s national identity is patriotism, and the negative is chauvinism.</p><p>Latgalians are an autochthonous people living mostly in the eastern part of the contemporary Latvia. As regards Latgalian (it has been named in different ways – language, dialect, subdialect, foreign language, but it does not change the essence of the phenomenon) various resolutions, decrees etc. have been passed and adopted.</p><p>Participants of the 2nd Conference on Latgalistics (Rezekne, October 17, 2009) adopted the resolution „On the Status of a Regional Language to Be Attributable to the Latgalian Language”.</p><p>In accordance with the new Official Language Law enacted on September 1, 2000 the official language in Latvia is the Latvian language. Section 3 Paragraph 4 of the Law prescribes: „The State shall ensure the maintenance, protection and development of the Latgalian written language as a historic variant of the Latvian language.” However, it is a very formal statement. Strange as it may sound but the Senate of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia has adopted a decision (August 18, 2009, Case No. A42571907 SKA-596/2009): „The Senate concludes that in the first sentence of Article 4 of the Satversme (the Constitution – J. C.) of the Republic of Latvia the concept „The Latvian language” means the Latvian literary language. It is the official language for the purpose of Section 110 of the Administrative Procedure Law. From the conclusion that for the purpose of Section 110 Paragraph I of the Administrative Procedure Law the official language is the Latvian literary language it follows that other subdialects or languages for the purpose of Section 110 Paragraph II of the Administrative Procedure Law are foreign languages and a document drafted in the Latgalian literary language is to be acknowledged as a document drafted in a foreign language. This decision is not to be appealed against.”</p><p>It took the Latgalian enthusiasts (I am one of them) seven years (2003–2010) to get the individual code for the Latgalian language. ISO 639/Joint Advisory Committee (Library of Congress, Washington) has finally attributed the code, namely, LTG.</p><p>Hopefully the Latgalian identity will not be swept away and this only identity for a lot of citizens of Latvia will be fought for and preserved also in the shadow of the so-called majority.</p>

Abstract:
This research explains Fazlur Rahman’s innovative approach to delineating the distinction between Hadith and Sunnah and its implications for the reconstruction of Islamic science. Rahman identified historical ambiguities in the usage of Hadith and Sunnah within Islamic scholarship, advocating for a clearer differentiation between textual records (Hadith) and the practical applications (Sunnah) of Prophet Muhammad’s teachings. By employing qualitative analysis of primary texts authored by Rahman and supplemented by secondary literature, this study examines Rahman’s nuanced perspectives on these concepts. It critically assesses Rahman’s contributions, emphasizing his endeavor to harmonize traditional Islamic teachings with contemporary scientific paradigms. Rahman’s scholarly approach not only enriches the understanding of Islamic sciences but also underscores the vital integration of Islamic principles with modern knowledge frameworks. His intellectual legacy stands as a crucial link between traditional Islamic scholarship and contemporary critical inquiry, advocating for a nuanced approach that addresses the multifaceted challenges confronting Muslim societies today. Abstract:
Abstract: This essay examines how Benito Pérez Galdós represents regional and national identities in his travel literature, published across magazines, newspapers, and books. Drawing on Imagology's theoretical framework for analyzing literary representations of national stereotypes, the study argues that Galdós's portrayal of various ethnic identities (Basque, Cantabrian, Castilian, Catalonian, Andalusian, Portuguese, Italian, and English) serves his broader social and political project of forging a new Spanish national consciousness. The analysis situates Galdós's representations within contemporary intellectual currents—social Darwinism, competing nationalist discourses, and regeneracionismo—that shaped his worldview.

Abstract:
Abstract. Meaning is correlated with actual actions, both in communication and ideology and social relations, so that the issue of meaning is now the focus of contemporary scientific study and criticism. The Christian faith, which specifically constructs a system of theology, worldview and ethics based on Biblical texts, is also faced with the challenge of interpreting the meaning of Biblical texts. From this struggle, this article discusses the issue of semantic theory from three perspectives, namely: structuralism, post-structuralism, and evangelical theology. Through this article, the author aimed to analyze semantic issues so that it is hoped that it will be able to present appropriate semantic constructions for approaches to Christian hermeneutics and theology in facing existing challenges. The method used was literature study. The results of this research showed that there are several similarities between the semantic theory of structuralism and Christian theology which is characterized by a constructive approach to meaning with several important notes. On the other hand, these two approaches are not in line with the semantic pattern of post-structuralism which is deconstructive, radical and tends to be agnostic.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As part of historically minorized culture, Catalan literature endured difficult periods, e.g., the Francoist regime. To imagine different worlds writing in this language was even more arduous in the 20th century because of the negative attitude towards the fantastic shared by two fundamental trends of Catalan literature up to the 1970s: Noucentisme and historical realism. Nonetheless, H.P. Lovecraft was an important reference in the Catalan non-mimetic fiction that had a certain revival in post-war times. As a step towards “normalization” of Catalan literature after Franco’s death, the writers’ collective Ofèlia Dracs published several collections of short-stories of “genre” fiction–among them Lovecraft, Lovecraft! (1981). On the one hand, this article inscribes this exceptional collection in its historical context and in the contemporary Catalan literary system; on the other, it aims to shed light on Lovecraft’s role in Ofèlia Dracs’ book, proving the projection of his extraordinary supernatural world onto it by the presence not only of Lovecraftian hypotexts in its different tales, but also of metafictional elements inherited mainly from Joan Perucho’s postmodernist writings.
