Abstract:
Field experiments were conducted over 2 years in Yuma County, AZ, and Imperial County, CA, to determine the efficacy of several biocontrol agents for the management of lettuce drop caused by Sclerotinia spp. Commercial formulations of Trichoderma harzianum (Plantshield, Supersivit), Gliocladium virens (Soilgard), Coniothyrium minitans (Contans), and Bacillus subtilis (Companion) were evaluated and compared with the chemical fungicide iprodione (Rovral) against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and S. minor. A single application of biocontrol products or of Rovral did not reduce lettuce drop caused by either Sclerotinia species. However, two applications of Contans, one at planting and one at post-thinning, significantly reduced the incidence of lettuce drop caused by S. sclerotiorum and increased yield but had no effect on S. minor at both locations in both years. Two applications of other biocontrol products did not significantly reduce disease incidence despite medium to high recovery following application. In contrast, Contans was only sporadically recovered following application. In vitro fungicide sensitivity evaluation revealed that both Trichoderma and Gliocladium species were tolerant to iprodione, dicloran (Botran), and vinclozolin (Ronilan) up to 1,000 ppm a.i., whereas both Sclerotinia spp. and C. minitans were sensitive to all three fungicides above 1 ppm. In summary, Contans was the most effective treatment for the control of lettuce drop caused by S. sclerotiorum, but no treatment was effective against S. minor in the desert lettuce production systems.

Abstract:
Field experiments were conducted over 2 years in Yuma, AZ, and Holtville, CA, to establish the relationship between soil sclerotium density of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and the incidence of lettuce drop on different lettuce (Lactuca sativa) types under different irrigation systems, and to determine the efficacy of the biocontrol agent Coniothyrium minitans (Contans) against S. sclerotiorum on crisphead lettuce at varied sclerotium densities under different irrigation systems. There was no significant interaction of irrigation (overhead sprinkler versus furrow) with either sclerotium density or with biocontrol treatment. Lettuce drop incidence was lowest in romaine lettuce compared with crisphead or leaf lettuce at all soil sclerotium densities. There was a significant positive correlation between the sclerotial density and the percent disease incidence. Disease incidence in plots infested with 2 sclerotia/m2 of bed was not significantly higher than in control plots regardless of lettuce type. However, plots infested with 40 or 100 sclerotia/m2 of bed revealed a significantly higher disease incidence over the control in all lettuce types. A single application of Contans at planting significantly reduced the incidence of lettuce drop in all lettuce types even under high disease pressure. There were no significant differences between recommended (2.2 kg/ha) and high (4.4 kg/ha) application rates of Contans or between one or two applications of the product.

Abstract:
Coniothyrium minitans, marketed as Contans, has become a standard management tool against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in a variety of crops, including winter lettuce. However, it has been ineffective against lettuce drop caused by S. minor. The interactions between C. minitans and S minor were investigated to determine the most susceptible stage in culture to attack by C. minitans, and to determine its consistency on S minor isolates belonging to four major mycelial compatibility groups (MCGs). Four isolates of S. minor MCG 1 and 5 each from MCGs 2 and 3 and one from MCG 4 were treated in culture at purely mycelial, a few immature sclerotial, and fully mature sclerotial phases with a conidial suspension of C. minitans. Sclerotia from all treatments were harvested after 4 weeks, air dried, weighed, and plated on potato dextrose agar for recovery of C. minitans. S. minor formed the fewest sclerotia in plates that received C. minitans at the mycelial stage; C. minitans was recovered from nearly all sclerotia from this treatment and sclerotial mortality was total. However, the response of MCGs was inconsistent and variable. Field experiments to determine the efficacy of C. minitans relative to the registered fungicide, Endura, on lettuce drop incidence and soil inoculum dynamics were conducted from 2006 to 2009. All Contans treatments had significantly lower numbers of sclerotia than Endura and unsprayed control treatments, and drop incidence was as low as in Endura-treated plots (P > 0.05). Although the lower levels of lettuce drop in Contans treatments were correlated with significantly lower levels of sclerotia, the lower levels of lettuce drop, despite the presence of higher inoculum in the Endura treatment, was attributable to the prevention of infection by S. minor. A useful approach to sustained lettuce drop management is to employ Contans to lower the number of sclerotia in soil and to apply Endura to prevent S. minor infection within a cropping season.

Abstract:
Dyslipidemia leads to atherosclerosis which is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Edamame contains omega-3 fatty acids and phytochemical components such as isoflavones, sterols and saponins, and also high in fiber content. Edamame has been proved to have ability to decrease LDL cholesterol level. This research aims to analyze the comparison of edamame flour based low fat enteral formula with commercial low fat formula. This was a descriptive comparatif research design. Data collection was done by doing calculations on nutrient content and bioavailability protein, also organoleptic quality of low fat enteral formula with edamame flour substitution. The result showed that fat content of modified formula was 26.4% of total energy requirement and the value had met dietary requirement for dyslipidemia diet which is not more than <30% of total energy requirement. Type of fat in this formula largely contans unsaturated fats derived from omega-3 fatty acids of soy edamame and omega-9 fatty acids from olive oil. The value of protein bioavailability which was shown from Amino Acid Score was 32.18, Theoretical Digestibility was 89.27, Net Protein Utilization was 28.73, Protein Worth of Eggs was 16.77, and Protein Eficiency Ratio was 4.51. The result of hedonic quality test showed that the color of low fat enteral formula with edamame flour substitution was light brown, the taste was sweet, the smell was typical edamame aroma, and had liquid consistency. Based on the comparison of commercial enteral formula with non-commercial enteral formula based on edamame flour, it can be concluded that edamame based flour enteral formula can be recommended as a non-commercial enteral formula for patients with dyslipidemia replacing commercial formula.

Antymikrobową aktywność tych produktów przypisuje się organicznym związkom chemicznym zawartym w komponentach roślinnych i zwierzęcych (allicyna, endogenne flawonoidy i glikozydy, terpeny, kumaryny, furanokumaryny, chitozan). Związki te hamują kiełkowanie zarodników i ograniczają wzrost strzępek kiełkowych grzybów.

Abstract:
A comparison of the ability of commercially produced biological control agents—Contans, Gliorex, Hirundo, Polyversum, Prometheus, Clonoplus, Integral Pro and Xilon GR, completed with an isolate of Clonostachys rosea and of Pseudomonas sp.—to protect strawberry plants against Phytophthora cactorum was performed. The experiment was performed on strawberry cultivars Sonata, Karmen, and Wendy—cultivated in a cultivating room and greenhouse. The health of plants was affected negatively by the pathogen in all variants of biological agents used, but differences were seen in the rates of this decrease. The results revealed the ability of some tested agents to improve the growth of plants in the absence of the pathogen; the preparation Polyversum (Pythium oligandrum) was the most beneficial, in both the presence and absence of the pathogen. Contrarily, some agents alone decreased the health of plants; Integral Pro (Bacillus subtillis) and a strain of Pseudomonas sp. caused a deterioration in the health of the plants, even in the absence of a pathogen. The results of our analysis demonstrate the varied usefulness of all agents under unified environmental conditions; their effect seems to be dependent on the conditions and on the combination of the genotypes of all three participants in the interaction: plant–pathogen–antagonist.

Abstract:
Sclerotinia drop of lettuce, caused by the pathogenic fungi Sclerotinia minor and S. sclerotiorum, is a serious disease in most regions where this crop is grown. Conventional fungicides, such as Rovral (iprodione) and Endura (boscalid), are usually applied after lettuce is thinned and once more 2 to 3 weeks later. Two biological products, Contans (Coniothyrium minitans) and Serenade (Bacillus subtilis), are also available. In earlier field trials conducted from 2001 to 2003 in the presence of S. sclerotiorum, the mean reduction in disease by Contans, Serenade and Endura was 69, 18 and 41%, respectively. The objective of the current study was to determine the efficacy of the biological products Contans and Serenade, applied alone or in combination with each other or the conventional fungicide Endura, within a biologically intensive integrated pest management system for Sclerotinia drop on lettuce. The study was conducted at The University of Arizona, Yuma Valley Agricultural Center. Sclerotia of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum were produced in the laboratory. Lettuce ‘Winterhaven’ was seeded and sclerotia were applied to the plots on November 8, 2004. Disease assessment was performed three times, including plant maturity (February 24), by recording the number of dead plants in each plot. Lettuce drop caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum was significantly reduced by the biofungicides Contans and Serenade as well as the conventional fungicide Endura. At plant maturity, the highest level of disease control among all treatments was provided by one or two applications of the biofungicide Contans as well as application of Contans at seeding following by either Serenade or Endura after thinning. Also, two applications of the other tested biofungicide, Serenade, controlled Sclerotinia drop as well as two applications of the conventional fungicide, Endura. The results of this study suggest that the biological products Contans and Serenade, used either alone or with the conventional fungicide Endura, can provide effective levels of control of lettuce drop caused by S. sclerotiorum. Although encouraging, the results from this initial field trial will need to be confirmed by additional studies. Funding for this research project was provided, in part, by the IR-4 project under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Abstract:
In this work we have developed a theory of electric characteristic of the metal-oxide-insulator-metal structure, considering a thin film of oxide between metal and insulator; the oxide is another insulator of wider forbidden energy gap. A uniform energy distribution of impurity states at the oxide-insulator interface was considered. W e have studied the actual distribution of potential in the region of spatial charge using the Poisson equation. With this distribution we obtain the relation between the contact potential and the charge in the depletion region and then the characteristic potential - capacitance of t his structure. This type of characteristic is useful to calculate the characteristic current - potential, and current-time at a given potential . In this manner it is important to the understanding of MIM and MOIM structures.

Abstract:
The tangential contact stiffness for ground Ti-6Al-4V surfaces is measured to linearly decrease with the application of tangential load. At the beginning of the application of tangential load, for ground surfaces, the ratio of the tangential contact stiffness to the normal contact stiffness is seen to be approximately half the Mindlin ratio. This is consistent with many other published experimental studies. Measurements of normal contact stiffness for ground surfaces conform to a model that posits a linear relationship between normal contact stiffness and normal load. An equivalent surface roughness parameter is defined for two surfaces in contact; and the normal contact stiffness for ground surfaces is observed to be inversely proportional to this parameter. Single asperity models were constructed to simulate the effect of different frictional laws and plasticity on the tangential displacement of an asperity contact. Further, multi-asperity modelling showed the effect of different normal load distributions on the tangential behaviour of interfaces. In addition, normal contact stiffness was modelled for a grid of asperities taking into account asperity interactions. A receding contact problem for which the required form of the distributed dislocations is bounded-bounded was solved. Then, a fundamental 2D frictional receding contact problem involving a homogeneous linear elastic infinite layer pressed by a line load onto a half-plane of the same material was analysed. This was done by the insertion of preformed distributed dislocations (or eigenstrains), which take into account the correct form of the separation of the interface at points away from the area of loading, along with corrective bounded-bounded distributions. The general method of solution was further refined and adapted to solve three other receding contact problems. The solutions demonstrated the robustness and applicability of this new procedure.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the influence of asperities such as found on the teeth of gears and discs, and failure mechanisms associated with rough surface Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL). The principal outcomes of the research provide a good insight into fatigue life, residual stress effects, damage prediction and surface contact failures. In particular, the study is intended to provide understanding into the residual stress distribution resulting from plastic deformation of surface asperities in the running in process. The residual stress is then added to the asperity elastic stress distribution and examined in detail to see the effects on fatigue damage and fatigue life. So, a theoretical model has been developed to assist design against the residual stress effect and surface contact fatigue, such as micropitting. The technique used in the study starts with developing an elastic plastic model of the rough surface by using the Abaqus Finite Element analysis software package. This is a nonlinear problem and ranges of applied loads have been applied to the as-manufactured surfaces causing the asperity features to experience varying degrees of plastic deformation. The pre and post running roughness profiles are studied in order to assess the level of plastic deformation actually occurring at significant surface asperity features by aligning the pre and post running profiles. This results in a new technique that has helped to identify the level of plastic deformation occurring in the practice, and also to make a comparison with FEA contact analysis for the same asperity features to identify the appropriate residual stress field. The residual stress field associated with the plastic deformation was extracted and evaluated. The extracted residual stress field was transferred to a form that facilitated IV inclusion in stress evaluation code to obtain the stress history for the material subject to loading in an EHL contact. The research carried out considers surface fatigue analysis with and without a residual stress field, so as to establish the influence of asperity plastic deformation on the fatigue properties of the surface. All the work is based on numerical simulation of surface fatigue failure in EHL situations and carried out numerically. The procedure can be applied quickly and gives the opportunity to apply several models and investigate the influence of all the model parameters on material deformation and fatigue life.

Abstract:
O modelo é criado seguindo a proposta do benchmarck apresentada pela International Association of Vehicle System Dynamics (IAVSD).
Railway dynamics systems are modeled regarding the creep forces between wheel-rail. The equations of movement are strongly influenced by these forces, what requests the knowledge of the theory in mechanical of contact, necessary tool to foresee the behavior of a railway vehicle. The wheelset is responsible by receiving the perturbations of irregularities and transfer them to the primary suspension. A railway vehicle is composed by primary and secondary suspensions. The proposal is based on performing simulations in the time domain, dynamic mresponse of a railway wheelset of two degrees of freedom. The mathematical model is developed. The stiffness of contact and conicity are linearized around an operation point, near to track center. The influence of speed is determined to linearized model and to a range of 0.1 to 1.0 in the conicity. The eigenvectors are presented. In the following, the non linear model of the wheelset is generated using a specialized package of multi body system, VAMPIRE. The package creates equations of movement after the generation of the topology. The non linear mathematical model are defined by the benchmark proposed by International Association of Vehicle System Dynamics (IAVSD). The wheelset is submitted to 20kN at the rail level. In a second case, the wheelset is submitted to a rate of 50kN/s of lateral force until derailing. The determined longitudinal and lateral forces on contact, yaw angle and displacement of the center of gravity of the wheelset, contact angle are compared with the benchmark results and other authors.

Balcombe, Robbie. "A study of rolling contact fatigue cracks in lubricated contacts." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/9848.

Full text
Abstract:
A novel method for coupling fluid pressure and crack deformation for the purpose of analysing rolling contact fatigue (RCF) cracks in lubricated, hydrodynamic and elastohydrodynamic, contacts is presented. The model addresses some of the simplifying assumptions applied to existing models presented in the literature such as: (i) using an imposed fluid pressure gradient inside the crack, (ii) using an imposed fluid pressure at the crack mouth, and (iii) adopting a surface contact pressure, Hertzian or EHL, that does not account for the fluid flow in and out of the crack during loading. The model has been used to model the effect of lubricant/crack interaction in various RCF configurations as the rolling element passes over the pre-formed crack; which has direct application to bearings and rail/wheel contacts. The results of the simulations performed with the fully-coupled fluid/solid solver developed by the author suggest that the cracked component/lubricant interaction contributes significantly to accelerate the rate of surface breaking crack growth in rolling element bearings and wheel/rail type contacts. It is shown through simulations that the lubricant works as a catalyst inside the crack to convert the compressive contact load into a crack opening, tensile fatigue mechanism, through the effect of fluid pressurisation inside the crack. The results obtained using such a model suggest that the opening associated with the fluid action within the crack induces large mode I stress intensity factors. This has been shown to be the principal factor that promotes and influences the rate of rolling contact fatigue crack growth in lubricated contacts. In addition to the modelling work, an experimental method of analysing RCF cracks in real time has been developed. The technique is based on laser induced fluorescence that allows the penetration of the fluid within the crack to be observed. Though the method would require development to be used to provide results that could be used for quantitative comparisons with crack models, some encouraging preliminary results have been obtained: the technique has been shown to be suitable for measuring, at least qualitatively, the real time evolution of the film thickness in RCF cracks.

Full text
Abstract:
The presence of surface texture/roughness on engineering surfaces results in contacts between surfaces being considerably more compliant than if the interfaces were smooth and flat. The inclusion of a local contact stiffness can be critical to the accurate analytical or computational modeling of mechanical contacts. We present measurements of contact stiffness for five pairs of freshly prepared and worn of steel surfaces. The wom surfaces variously contain surface glazes, oxide layers, subsurface cracks, inclusions and wear particles. Contact resonance frequencies between sample interfaces are measured at various applied pressures. With known modal masses, the contact stiffness is easily calculated and presented on a per unit area basis. For a given contact pair, the contact stiffness is nonlinear, increasing with nominal pressure and decreasing with increasing surface roughness. We compare these results with the Greenwood-Williamson (G-W) Theory of rough surface contact. The expected pressure and summit height dependencies are observed in the measured data. When there are wear particles within the contact, the stiffness is reduced when the underlying surfaces are very smooth. If the underlying surfaces are rough, the presence of wear particles have little effect on the contact stiffness.

Rigotti, Christophe, and Mohand-Saïd Hacid. Representing and Reasoning on Conceptual Queries Over Image Databases. Aachen University of Technology, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.89.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of content management of multimedia data types (e.g., image, video, graphics) is becoming increasingly important with the development of advanced multimedia applications. Traditional database management systems are inadequate for the handling of such data types. They require new techniques for query formulation, retrieval, evaluation, and navigation. In this paper we develop a knowledge-based framework for modeling and retrieving image data by content. To represent the various aspects of an image object's characteristics, we propose a model which consists of three layers: (1) Feature and Content Layer, intended to contain image visual features such as contours, shapes, etc.; (2) Object Layer, which provides the (conceptual) content dimension of images; and (3) Schema Layer, which contains the structured abstractions of images, i.e., a general schema about the classes of objects represented in the object layer. We propose two abstract languages on the basis of description logics: one for describing knowledge of the object and schema layers, and the other, more expressive, for making queries. Queries can refer to the form dimension (i.e., information of the Feature and Content Layer) or to the content dimension (i.e., information of the Object Layer). These languages employ a variable free notation, and they are well suited for the design, verification and complexity analysis of algorithms. As the amount of information contained in the previous layers may be huge and operations performed at the Feature and Content Layer are time-consuming, resorting to the use of materialized views to process and optimize queries may be extremely useful. For that, we propose a formal framework for testing containment of a query in a view expressed in our query language. The algorithm we propose is sound and complete and relatively efficient.

Abstract:
The Building Assets Toolkit is an approach for developing programs for specific segments of girls that will prepare them to better face the challenges of growing up. It will help program managers understand the needs of the girls in their community, engage stakeholders at different levels and with different viewpoints, and build concrete and meaningful programming for adolescent girls. The toolkit contains all the materials needed to help make a preliminary assessment of the assets a girl should acquire and the age by which she should acquire them. This document contains the Building Assets Toolkit’s List of Contents and Instruction Guide. The Instruction Guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to use the materials provided.

Benn, D., R. Linnen, and T. Martins. Evaluating white mica as an indicator mineral for lithium bearing pegmatites, Wekusko Lake pegmatite field, Manitoba, Canada. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/328982.

Full text
Abstract:
This project investigates the potential use of white micas as an indicator mineral within Li-bearing pegmatites and the potential of field portable techniques, such as Raman spectroscopy and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) as real-time techniques in exploration. The pegmatites in the Wekusko Lake field, Manitoba, Canada, display five zones of varying mineralization. White micas display two textures in the field (primary igneous and secondary) and four textures were identified by backscattered electron imaging (poor zonation, rimmed, patchy and exsolution). The white micas were analysed by Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA) and Laser Ablation Induction-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS) and the results show a strong correlation in the Li content of the white mica and the whole rock Li2O obtained from the assays of drill core. The K/Rb vs. Cs contents of the white mica indicate that the most prospective dikes contain moderate to highly evolved grains. The use of portable Raman Spectrometer, while useful for mineral identification, was not able to detect a significant Li signature at the concentrations tested (1500-6000 ppm).
