Abstract:
Abstract The salt print is an important part of photography, both in its historic value and in the tonal range it can provide. This tonal range is greater than any other photographic printing process available to date attributed to the inherent masking ability of the metallic silver. However the intrinsic production problems have made it a 'forgotten' process. There are five key problems. 1. The difficulties in achieving the potential extensive tonal range. 2. The varying colour of the print. 3. Staining that appears in the print, during and after processing. 4. Instability and longevity of the salt print. 5. Contradictory and inaccurate information in material published on the salt print. Although the emphasis of the research is on exploring and controlling the colour and tonal range, the staining problems and stability of the print are also addressed. The materials used for contact negatives today vary in both capture and output, from analogue film processed in the traditional wet darkroom to a variety of transparent film printed from digital files. Inadequate density and tonal range can affect all types of negatives. To provide sufficient exposure time for the salt prints extended tonal range adjustments to the negative were necessary. These long exposures then converted sufficient silver salts to the image making metallic silver, utilising the intrinsic self-masking process. Ultimately this research has uncovered ways to control colour and tonal range and certain aesthetic qualities of the salt print, while simultaneously resolving some of the conflicts in published information. Accurate and consistent methods of processing eliminate staining, providing some stability to the print. The activities and steps carried out to make a salt print are manual; precise duplication is therefore almost unattainable. Nevertheless, although tests on a densitometer may display numeric differences, visual differences are barely noticeable.

Sears, Forest (Forest Orion). "3D print quality in the context of PLA color." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/104320.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis: S.B., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, 2016.

Includes bibliographical references (page 45).
3D printing is a hot topic in manufacturing and a truly useful tool, but it has limitations. Print quality properties - like raft peelability, dimensional tolerance and surface roughness - are hard to calibrate perfectly. A common material used in fused deposition modeling (FDM) printers is polylactic acid (PLA). One print quality concern is how different colors of PLA print differently under the exact same settings. The inconsistency in print quality by color is bad for designers, students, and engineers who want to rapidly prototype effectively. Analyzing the thermal, chemical and mechanical properties of the different colors of PLA and relating it to the quality of the prints gives the user a chance to calibrate their machine effectively for higher quality prints. The quality of prints are quantified by scoring systems that measure three properties of a print: dimensional tolerance, how easily the raft peels from the print, and the surface roughness. The thermal properties of the different colors of PLA were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) up to 230° C. The integrals of peaks and troughs from the DSC - representing heat absorbed and released by the different colors of PLA - show that each color responds differently to thermal treatment. The mechanical strength of each color was found to be different through uniaxial tensile testing. Yellow and orange filament had high percent crystallinity at -12.1%, while having a high yield stress at 41-45 MPa, and a low yield strain at 6.6%-11% extension. Red and blue filament had low percent crystallinity at ~8.8-10.2%, while having a low yield stress at 33-36 MPa, and a high yield strain at 18%-23% extension. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis determined each PLA color had unique additives. For calibrating printers for reliably high quality prints, crystallinity has a relationship with the amount of material extruded which could factor into qualities like dimensional tolerance and surface finish.

Christoffersson, Jessica. "Evaluation of Systematic&Colour Print Mottle." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Science and Technology, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2788.

Full text
Abstract:

Print mottle is a problem that has been hassling the printing business for a long time. Along with sharpness and correct colour reproduction, absence of print mottle is one of the most important factors of print quality. The possibility to measure the amount of print mottle (reflectance variation) may in many ways facilitate the development of printing methods. Such a measurement model should preferably follow the functions and abilities of the Human Visual System (HVS).

The traditional model that STFI-Packforsk has developed to measure print mottle uses frequency analysis to find variations in reflectance. However, this model suffers some limitations since is does not perfectly agree with the functions of the HVS and does only measure variations in lightness. A new model that better follows the functions of the HVS has thus been developed. The new model does not only consider variations in lightness (monochromatic) but also variations in colour (chromatic). The new model also puts a higher weight on systematic variations than on random variations since the human eye is more sensitive to ordered structures. Furthermore, the new model uses a contrast sensitivity function that weights the importance of variations in different frequencies.

To compare the new model with the traditional STFI model, two tests were carried out. Each test consisted of a group of test patches that were evaluated by the traditional STFI model and the new model. The first test consisted of 15 greyscale test patches that originated from conventional flexo and offset presses. The second test consisted of 24 digitally simulated test patches containing colour mottle and systematic mottle.

The evaluation results in both the traditional and the new model were compared to the results of a visual evaluation carried out using a panel of test persons. The new model produced a result that correlated considerably better with the visual estimation than what the traditional model did.

Jones, Faith Anne. "The autobiography of Esther Shechter : Yiddish print culture in Winnipeg in transnational context." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/50070.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the Yiddish book, Di geshikhte fun mayn lebn [My life story] by Esther Shechter (1867-1953), published in Winnipeg in 1951. Its central text, initially written for the YIVO Institute of Jewish Research autobiography contest of 1942, is a memoir of the author’s early life and immigration to Canada. In considering this work, questions of authorship and the production of the text are explored. Jewish traditions of life writing and Yiddish secular culture specifically are the terrain from which this work grows. Shechter is found to have a strong commitment to the act of reading and to self-education, and to the creation of a modern Jewish identity which combines Jewish cultural and historical knowledge with awareness of and involvement in non-Jewish political life. This is evidenced through her passionate connection to newspapers and print culture, her involvement in Yiddish secular education, and her expressed and implicit reasons for writing her memoir. Her work comments on women’s activities and roles in ways that anticipate later feminist thought. Born in Ukraine and arriving in Canada in 1905, Shechter considers her autobiography a contribution to the historical record of Jewish immigration to Western Canada. Like many single-book memoir writers, she sees herself primarily as a consumer of and audience for culture. The self-publication of her memoir is therefore not primarily an act of artistic or aesthetic expression but a social undertaking in keeping with her values: engagement with civic life, the maintenance of Jewish and Yiddish cultural literacy, and the creation of the self through reading, learning, and writing. Her work arises from transnational Yiddish culture, and in turn seeks to enrich that culture.

Abstract:
The current study conducted a content analysis of newspaper articles in a Florida newspaper, the Orlando Sentinel. The study spanned across a five-year time period from 2004-2009, featuring 198 articles on domestic violence homicide. The current study is a replication of previous research conducted using the same newspaper during 1995-2000. Victim blame, tone, and descriptions of the perpetrator and victim were among several items of interest. Findings reveal a slight increase in victim blaming statements and a larger increase in positive portrayals of the victims of domestic violence homicide.

Al-Hasani, Abdulmonam. "Influences on media content : domestic news production processes at four Omani print news organisations." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30554.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines internal and external influences on news content at four Omani news organisations, Oman and Al-Watan (Arabic-language dailies) and Oman Observer and Times of Oman (English-language dailies). Three theoretical frameworks guided this study: the political economy approach, the cultural approach, and the social organisation of news. The study is divided into macro and micro levels of analysis. At the macro level, the study focuses on ownership and control, economic determinations, and media-society relationships. At the micro level, the study investigates newsgathering and news selection processes by focusing on journalists' backgrounds, journalistic practices in newsrooms, news values and journalists/sources relationship. Three methods are employed to collect the data in this study: content analysis of the selected news media, personal interviews (with journalists, editors, and editors-in-chiefs) and participant observation of the newsrooms at the Omani dailies. The findings of this research show that Omani daily newspapers, either private or government owned, are political projects working under government control. Most of the Omani news workers observed in this study were aware that they were not doing professional journalism work. The channels for gathering domestic news items at all four Omani newspapers in this study were very limited. The four main news sources for gathering domestic news items were (1) Oman News Agency (ONA), (2) public relation and information offices (PR), (3) reporters and (4) correspondents. News workers heavily depend on the national agency, and on ready-made news from the PR offices. Poor writing from correspondents leads to poor, similar domestic content in all daily newspapers. Because of the limitation of the news gathering channels, the selection processes were also limited. The findings of interviews and observations show the long process of decisions-making routines at the government-owned dailies. In contrast the private dailies work with less bureaucratic processes. Nevertheless, both private and government owned papers face the same problems in routines for selecting news items and the same difficulties gaining access to information, not only from the official sources, but also from ordinary people. The news workers face pressures from official sources, readers, advertisers, news organisations' administrations, and personal financial pressures. The findings of this research support the theoretical approaches to media content while focusing on Omani context. However, the findings match some perspectives more closely than others. The organisational, extra-media level and societal factors work stronger than the individual communicator perspective.

Abstract:

Print news has been relied upon as a source of information for centuries. Despite recent strides towards gender equality, women are persistently marginalized in news content and newsrooms. This thesis analyzed over 950 staff-written Milwaukee Journal Sentinel stories and conducted 19 interviews with both men and women staff reporters and editors to examine how patriarchy might infiltrate local print news. I analyzed how women and men authors, sources and subjects are included or excluded from the news. Furthermore, this thesis examines the gendered division of labor within the newsroom.

Berger, Jessica. "Disease Representations in Late Modernity: Lung Cancer Stories in the Canadian Print Media." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23307.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis describes and analyses the representation of lung cancer in the Canadian print media. The thesis employs a theoretical framework comprised of Giddens’ theory of reflexivity and Goffman’s theory of framing, to understand the social dynamics of negotiation behind the disease’s portrayal in the media, in a late modern context. Late modernity was defined by institutional reflexivity and a focus on understanding and mitigating risk. The research was conducted through a content analysis and examined quantitative trends that contributed to a subsequent qualitative interpretation. The results show that the coverage of lung cancer decreased over time. The analysis shows a discourse of a biomedical institution that has unsuccessfully controlled the disease, a lack of patient advocacy, particularly among celebrities, and a continued conflation of smoking behaviour and lung cancer, all of which contributed to the decreasing coverage. The framing processes point to a society focused on understanding risk through studying the disease’s causes, as well as one concerned with legislative debate and behavioural prevention. The emergence of a frame focused on the patient’s lived experience might contribute to an improved representation of the disease.

Robinson, Thomas Christopher. "The Sticking Out Parts: A Content Analysis of Print and Website Advertisements on Breast and Penis Augmentation." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2008. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/sociology_theses/20.

Full text
Abstract:
Breast and penis augmentations are century old processes of body modification continuing in development and practice today. This Masters thesis is a content analysis of breast and penis augmentation print and internet advertisements to explore one facet of augmentation discourse presented in public space. Relevant theoretical literature includes fetish discourse and medical discourse as existing frameworks that conceptualize augmentation predominantly as a process of body fragmentation. After reviewing this literature, I expand to blend together perspectives from three body theorists, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault and Judith Butler, as an alternate framework for embodiment. I then use content analysis to examine the data collected from 21 print sources and 27 internet sources. The data indicates fetish discourse, focusing on body fragmentation, is the dominant content in breast and penis augmentation advertisements; however, I argue in the conclusion that incorporating elements of embodiment into fetish discourse is a better perspective for future research.

Tanski, Karen Martin. "The Concepts of Mother in Children's Stories in Translation from Print to Visual Media: A Content Analysis." PDXScholar, 1994. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4783.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was two-fold. First, this thesis sought to uncover the implicit concepts associated with mothers in children's stories. Second, this thesis attempted to chart changes in portrayals of mother when translated from print to a visual medium. This research maintains that the concepts of mother in children's stories contain cultural ideals that are related to society's evolving perceptions of mother. Eighteen mother/surrogate mother portrayals were analyzed in 15 novels and 15 videotapes. Each portrayal was coded according to marital status, range of behaviors, 41 individual behaviors within five categories, and the amount of storytime. The results of this thesis reveal that the two most frequent behaviors associated with the role of mother in both media and print are authority and nurturance. The research also found that mother portrayals, when translated to film and television, displayed less dominant and less supportive behaviors than in print versions. Of the 41 individual behaviors coded in both novels and videotapes mothers in films and television were found to display less ability and more affection than their print versions. In conclusion, this study found that mother portrayals, when translated to film and television, may be altered to increase their mass audience appeal.

Belete, Roman Yiseni. "The contest of representation : photographic images of Ethiopian women in national print media, development aid organisations and galleries." Thesis, Durham University, 2014. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/10631/.

Full text
Abstract:
The repetition of particular photographic narratives may homogenise women from the non-European world, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa, who are often portrayed as victims of drought, famine, war and conflict. The research critically analyses the historical and contemporary construction of female bodies in Ethiopia through photographic images. It provides a novel overview of the least explored representational practices, by comparing photographic works commissioned by aid and development organisations with those produced by Ethiopian photographers. It specifically considers how far stereotypical representations are being challenged and deconstructed in contemporary practices of photography in Ethiopia. This project assesses over seventy photographic images, ranging from picture postcards to photojournalism and photo-essays, and seeks to critically interpret them from their site of production to their final presentation in different modes of circulation (Rose, 2003). It triangulates the meanings of images through developing an understanding of the specificity of documentary photographs, the photographers’ intent and the demands of institutions, including the national print media, development aid organisations and galleries. The research argues that some Ethiopian photographers use the photographic image as a medium to confront stereotypes in picturing poverty, drought, famine, malnutrition and HIV/AIDS, there by contesting narratives about Ethiopia and Ethiopians in the process.

Linnemann, Martina E. "From page to screen : placing hypertext fiction in an historical and contemporary context of print and electronic literary experiments." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4422/.

Full text
Abstract:
Only recently has our perception of the computer, now a familiar and ubiquitous element of everyday life, changed from seeing it as a mere tool to regarding it as a medium for creative expression. Computer technologies such as multimedia and hypertext applications have sparked an active critical debate not only about the future of the book format, ("the late age of print" {Bolter} is only one term used to describe the shift away from traditional print media to new forms of electronic communication) but also about the future of literature. Hypertext Fiction is the most prominent of proposed electronic literary forms and strong claims have been made about it: it will radically alter concepts of text, author and reader, enable forms of non-linear writing closer to the associative working of the mind, and make possible reader interaction with the text on a level impossible in printed text. So far the debate that has attempted to put hypertext fiction into a historical perspective has linked it to two developments. Firstly the developments in computer technology that made hypertext not only possible but also widely accessible and secondly a tradition of postmodern theory, where characteristics attributed to hypertext echo concepts of fragmentation, multiplicity and instability that theorists like Barthes and Derrida have formulated previously and that have led to the notion of hypertext as an "authentic, yet functional postmodern form" {Roberts} A third element that is not generally subject to critical evaluation is the practice of (post)modern writing in which a number of authors consciously break with the linearity of print conventions in favour for a more fragmented narrative and presentation as well as actively inviting the reader's participation in what Barthes calls "writerly" text. There are two reasons why these "proto-hypertexts" have been widely ignored or dismissed: Hypertext is still widely define as exclusive to the electronic realm and is furthermore generally perceived in oppositional pairs in contrast to print, i.e. non-linear vs. linear and interactive vs. passive, which conceptually does not leave room for a study of an "evolution" out of existing forms of writing practice. By examining hypertext fiction in a context of print experiments (Cortazar, Borges, B.S. Johnson, Andreas Okopenko, Raymond Queneau, Miroslav Pavic, Italo Calvino) and also in a context of other forms of digital literary experimentation (collaborative projects and computer-generated writing), this thesis aims to, on a diachronic level, reincorporate hypertext fiction into an evolutionary (though radical) literary tradition and examines the manner in which concepts which originated in this tradition have been taken over often very literally and without much redefinition. On the a-historical, synchronic level, this study explores some of the possible formats for literature in the new electronic textual media: hypertext fiction, collaborative writing projects, computer-generated writing and the different challenges these present to our understanding ofliterature. After an introduction in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and 3 discuss two of the keywords of hypertext theory, its "grand narratives' (non-linearity and interactivity) and the appropriation of the terminology to hypertext theory and to hypertext fiction. Chapter 4 and 5 will look at alternative, though related, approaches to electronic fiction: Chapter 4 will examine aspects of collaborative writing in both a print and a digital environment while computer-generated writing stands at the centre of Chapter 5.

Abstract:
A content analysis of 36 newspapers in 12 states were examined to determine if balanced reporting of pesticide and water issues existed in 1995. There were two hypotheses explored in this study: One, that journalists tend to bias their reporting of pesticide and water issues by using more mentions from environmental groups than other sources; and two, that journalists tend to bias their reporting by using more negative terminology than positive terminology when reporting on pesticide and water issues. An on-line search using the Lexis-Nexis newspaper database produced 302 usable articles for this study. The number of mentions of environmental groups, government agencies and agri-industry officials were listed in coding sheets. Also, negative versus positive terminology was coded.A chi-square analysis of coded data derived from the selected articles demonstrated that journalists use a balance of sources when reporting on pesticide and water issues. However the analysis also shows that journalists frequently use more negative terminology, such as "toxic," or "contaminated," than positive when writing about pesticide and water issues.Recommendations at the end of this study are made to help reporters understand more thoroughly the definitions of some of the terminology they use in writing about pesticide and water issues.

Tanaka, Minne. "The twelve large colour prints of William Blake : a study on techniques, materials and context." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2008. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/79/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study in entirety the group of large colour prints which William Blake made between 1795 and 1805. The series of prints represents the single most important and complete development of Blake’s skill as an innovative printmaker. Although they include some of Blake’s best-known images, they have not been studied before in their entirety or from the point of view of analysing the techniques and methods Blake had used. My study will show how Blake executed these truly impressive prints in terms of materials, method and motives. The first half of the thesis deals with the materialistic aspects of Blake’s colour printing. In chapter one tracing the controversial two-pull discussion to the root, I will make clear the focus points as well as revealing the early tradition of experimental criticism on Blake’s colour printing method. Focusing on two important critics, W. Graham Robertson and Ruthven Todd, and the periods they lived, I attempt to reveal the role they played in a wider context. Also I show how the tradition of Blake’s art was inherited directly through the Ancients to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which leads to Robertson and Todd. In the second chapter I deal with the development of Blake’s colour printing experiments. It is obvious that the Twelve Large Colour Prints were produced as a result of Blake’s series of colour printing experiments, starting with monocolour simple prints, going through the illuminated books progressing with more colours and higher skills. As the experiments processed, the illustrations started to get free from the text and became independent visual art. Thus the Large and Small Book of Designs are compiled of full-page designs taken from the earlier illuminated books and printed in full colours, and interestingly some prints are colour printed from intaglio-etched plates. Based on my direct experience of comparing various prints and feeling the differences of the stages in the experiments in a relatively short period of time during my two research trips to the United States, I attempt to reconstruct the development of colour prints placed in his entire oeuvre. Chapter three is the history of colour printing. Throughout history, many innovative printers attempted colour printing, but the number of those who succeeded both technically and financially was surprisingly few. Some were obliged to pursuit their aesthetic in amateurish wasteful spending even ending in bankruptcy, and some compromised the quality for mass production and cost effectiveness. But there have always been innovative printers trying to produce prints in colour. Taking in the whole picture, I try to understand Blake’s colour printing better. Chapter four is my attempt to record scientifically attained information about the materials Blake used. Most of the information in this chapter is taken from the results of the research conducted by the Tate conservationists led by Joyce Townsend. Thanks to their state of the art equipment, most of the pigments and other materials are now identifiable. By studying materials, we can grasp the method physically. The latter three chapters narrow the focus on the series of Twelve Large Colour Prints itself. Chapter five deals with the actual examination of the prints. During this doctoral project, I saw all prints extant, except two, Nebuchadnezzar at Minneapolis and Good and Evil Angels in a private collection in New York. Based on my direct experience, I give the full record of the location, comparison of different pulls and further information for each print. In chapter six I trace the footstep of academic criticism in the field of art history to show what has been said about the interpretation of the Twelve Large Colour Prints. The first important critic was Anthony Blunt. As the director of the Courtauld Institute he not only set the base tone of Blake criticism in this field with his monograph but educated many critics after him. Various critics contributed to accumulate knowledge, but none could propose a decisive narrative to unite the whole set of prints. The latest proposal was made convincingly by Butlin and Lindsay in 1989 to put them in six pairs. In chapter seven I attempt to give my own interpretation of Blake’s motivation from his contemporary social situation and the art discussion Blake joined in. In relation to the art world Blake lived in, especially to the boom of galleries opened one after another by influential printmakers, I speculate what drove Blake to invent new methods and produce those exuberant colour prints.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to achieve a deeper understanding of how media portrays politicians and examine whether media is gender-biased. This is done by carrying out a case study within the Swedish context, which compares print media’s portrayal of the Moderate party’s former leader Anna Kinberg Batra with their current leader Ulf Kristersson. A quantitative content analysis is applied on 330 articles from four Swedish newspapers. By examining previous literature, a theoretical framework is constructed using theories on framing, the gender system as well as media’s treatment of female and male politicians which is later operationalized. In brief, the results of the study show there are differences in certain parts of media’s portrayal of Kinberg Batra and Kristersson, however they were not always as substantial and obvious as previous literature had indicated.

Abstract:
The refuge phenomenon is part of a historical trajectory of humanity in which modern world still resists to adapt itself. Refugees emerge in a social landscape that opposes to differences and, in this context, the journalistic discourse, taken as happening and reality on the cause, builds up limited spaces that restrict its social function inside the phenomenon, narrowing realities, identities and meanings. According to this perspective, this research aims to understand how the Brazilian journalistic coverage takes part on the construction of refugees, presenting them by means of elements that emphasize war and/or peace. To do so, it is used the peace journalism theory, by Johan Galtung, which should be able to create new values for the journalistic work. Under this paradigm, the field could work collaborating to the social integration of these people, as well as raising possibilities for voluntary repatriation and resettlement, considering long term solutions to the cause. To get to a common ground, the method used was the content analysis of 98 texts that were published by Brazilian journalists at the newspapers Correio Braziliense, Folha de São Paulo, O Globo and Zero Hora during the ten years that followed the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks. With an innovative characteristic, this study builds up an image of the Brazilian press and reveals that, for finding in violence and in victimization its main attraction, journalism companies treat the subject with indifference, presenting refugees as stereotyped and threatening social actors. What comes up in the Brazilian content, then, is not a reality based upon peace.

Abstract:
The capillary electrophoresis/mass spectrometry with electrospray source (CE-ESI-MS) was improved by (1) the development of new temperature control and positioning systems and (2) the inclusion of two capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detectors (C4Ds) to the electrophoretic separation capillary allowing to obtain complimentary information to the MS. The initial improvements were the introduction of a sliding platform for the CE equipment and a thermostatic module for the portion of the capillary outside the CE environment. These improvements allowed obtaining, for the first time, the activation energy of hydrolysis reaction of monoethyl carbonate: 99 ± 8 kJ mol-1. However, the most important improvement was the development of 3D-printed cartridge allowing the inclusion of up to two C4Ds along the capillary. This cartridge also allowed a significant improvement of the thermal control over the capillary. No significant difference of the original CE-DAD was observed for electrophoretic currents up to 100 µA. The original CE-MS has similar behavior only until 60 µA. New possibilities of the CE-(C4D)2-ESI-MS setup were demonstrated by the development of analytical methods for separation of: (1) sugars at pH 11.2, (2) biogenic amines at pH 2.0, and (3) carboxylic acids at pH 7.5. The electropherograms of the three detectors were made compatible by correcting the time scales. Therefore, the information obtained from the three detectors may be easily complemented. Thanks to the intrinsic low-selectivity of the C4D, that is complementary to the MS, which is the most selective detector for CE today. Although MS is also highly sensitive, C4D had similar or even better performance in some cases. Therefore, this unique combination is powerful analytical tool

“Estado de Minas” started publishing series of articles which gave rise to this research. “A tortura de Estela contada por Dilma” has been published for nine days by this newspaper and rescued the memory of torture in Minas Gerais. In addition, the series revealed the existence of such practices in the city of Juiz de Fora, a fact never before officially revealed. In this work, the author tried to understand, through Pecheutiana’s Analysis of Discourse, as the press talks about the military dictatorship and how the recollection of this period in Juiz de Fora reconstructs meanings in the reader's memory. It turned out that there is a reaffirmation of journalism's commitment to the revelation of hidden facts of the history of the country through the recovery of memory. In addition, it was found that there is a radicalization in discourse good versus evil, where the active militancy against the dictatorship is portrayed as totally good, while the military appear as exclusively bad figures. As series has as main character the political figure of Dilma Rousseff, was also possible to detect the existence of a positive look of the subject of the discourse on the current president, since he believes that a good militant can be a good ruler. Finally, evidence of the difficulty to rescue the country's memory through testimonies of survivors, since the recall causes the revival of past pains and often those people who could contribute to the rescue of certain periods prefer not to be subject to certain emotions. Thus, it was observed that journalism, manifested by the genre entry, is able to take up the memories of the country readers in a light way and, at the same time, deep. Topics, that was not discussed before, are presented to readers and lead to reflection on the past of the country. In addition, when the journalism reveals facts not published by the official media, he instigates the opening of discussions on specific topics, either by impact in other media, whether on the political scene.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates whether black women in senior management positions with decision-making authority have had an impact on the newsrooms of the Cape Town newspapers Die Burger, the supplement Jip, community newspaper MetroBurger, the Cape Times, the Cape Argus, the Weekend Argus and the Southern Mail, one title of the Cape Community Newspapers. Labour legislation promulgated in South Africa in 1994 means companies have to employ human resources equitably in keeping with the racial demographics of each province. Given the historical background of the South African media and the fact that it is almost 10 years after the first democratic elections in this country, what new paths have black South African women journalists forged for new journalists? This study focuses on the role of black women with regard to decisionmaking at the aforementioned newspapers. During the course of this study, 5 of the 6 women respondents have resigned from their positions. Other findings are that the editors generally have limited knowledge of the responsibilities of the women in this study. The editors have also indicated that no changes have been made or will be made to the job descriptions of the women, while the women have indicated that there have, indeed, been changes to their job descriptions. These changes have related to editorial and non-editorial responsibilities. While no training plans have been set out specifically for the women respondents, most of them have indicated they wanted more training opportunities. Most of the women respondents have indicated higher remuneration and job satisfaction as being the main reasons for resigning.

Abstract:
The problem of violence against women in Serbia is connected with the position that women hold inside of the discourse of family and society in general. Also, the general atmosphere in media implies the lack of media freedom, specific structural organization, and ownership relations in media companies. From this starting point, this paper investigates how different newspapers in Serbia are reporting about violence against women. This study outlines the most common topics and social actors that are represented inside of the articles. The analysis is divided in two parts. A content analysis of the five different newspapers in Serbia (Kurir, Blic, Vecernje Novosti, Politika and Danas) and critical discourse analysis of the most relevant articles inside of those. Part of the study is devoted to identify how these articles are most commonly framed among the chosen newspapers. Another part of the study looks at the comparison of the newspapers, with special emphasis on the social actors and the way they are represented among the articles. Results showed that newspapers report on violence against women differently when it comes to the category of frame. Most commonly used frame among overall sample is human interest frame which implies reports connected to the individual cases of violence against women that often generate feelings of outrage, empathy, caring, sympathy, or compassion. The background of the cases is almost in all of the articles used to portray the human-interest perspective. The reports are somewhat similar when it comes to the way how social actors are represented in the articles. For example, in the analyzed articles it is most often that the victims are presented as passive agents. The discourse of guilt around the social actors is often shared between the perpetrator and the victim. According to the latest statistics, eight women were killed during the first 58 days of 2018. Thus, practical implication of this study is to potentially point out more and less effective ways for Serbian news media to approach this serious social issue in the future.

Abstract: This academic work aimed to verify how the newspapers “Folha de S.Paulo” and “O Estado de S. Paulo” covered the home fans only policy in the São Paulo state, where the act came into force in April 2016. The work came from the hypothesis that the newspapers made a limited and unquestioning coverage about the subject. According to the act, football matches in which Palmeiras, Corinthians, São Paulo and Santos play against each other should only have supporters of the home teams in the stadium – later, Ponte Preta and Guarani were also reached. This dissertation tried to discuss concepts about football violence and home fans only policy, relating them to Brazil’s current context, seeked to set legal parameters about the issue and interviewed several people interested at the subject. Methodologically, content analysis proposed by Bardin (2016) was used to check how was the work made by “Folha” and “Estado”, in addition of the interviews. The newspapers went through both quantitative and qualitative analysis: it was examined how the newspapers reported, investigated and thought about home fans only policy along the first two years of validity. From the collected data, it was inferred that the newspapers made a correct and continuous coverage, but not so deep and questioning, partially confirming the initial hypothesis

The ecological knowledge, derived from human handling natural resources, is related to each individual perception of the environment where one lives. Two hundred semi-structured interviews with adults were performed and one hundred and two children’s mental maps were collected. The answers from the interviews were evaluated by the Thematic Content Analysis and they received specific scores to formulate a wise Local Ecological Knowledge measure (CELP). In spite of the proximity with RPPN “Engenho Gargaú” the interviewed adults had a poor ecological knowledge. However, the ones who had a more significant contact with primates, the man and residents who lived longer in the community showed a significantly higher CELP compared to the other residents. The age group did not influence the CELP results. Apparently, the community does not overly explore RPPN resources, justifying the poor ecological knowledge among residents. According to the mental maps, the children who had already seen primates showed a more realistic and detailed environmental perception than the ones who had never seen primates, showing a bigger contact with the environment and, possibly, with the RPPN. These data are able to help future researches and Environmental Education actions, specifically involving A. belzebul and S. flavius from RPPN “Engenho Gargaú”, two of the five target species included in the Brazilian government conservation action planning system “Plano de Ação Nacional para Conservação dos Primatas do Nordeste” (PAN PriNE). performed and one hundred and two children’s mental maps were collected.

This research examines the discursive dislocation undertaken by the women s magazine TPM, launched in 2001, regarding the models of women present in other women magazines that have become hegemonic, such as Claudia, Nova and Marie Claire. The hypothesis of the research is that TPM is built as an antagonistic force, printing an opening from the standard model of femininity and the way of doing women s magazines. We rely on two methodological approaches: analysis of issues of the magazine and research with the reading audience. The analyzed corpus covers eight years of the magazine s history, totaling 86 editions, published from January 2007 to December 2014. The qualitative empirical research was carried using focal group discussion techinque and presential individual interviews, with ten participant readers. Both approaches culminate in a critical analysis of the visibility schemes proposed on the magazine s communication contract. The discursive dispute established by TPM magazine was designed from the discourse theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. The steady discourse of women s magazines was set in the first chapter, by privileged signifiers romance, care, beauty, home life, independence, work and freedom. The second chapter maps in thematic blocks the research corpus. The discussions held by the readers are systematized in the third chapter, by the axies of expectations, frustrations and the relationship of love and hatred they establish with the magazine. The last chapter analyzes comparatively TPM s communication contract, concluding that its convocation appeals to uniqueness
