Abstract:
M. Fahim Khan, “Macro Consumption Function in an IslamicFramework,” Journal of Research in Islamic Economics (JRIE), Vol. 1,No. 2, Winter 1404/1984, pp. 1-24.Prof. M. Fahim Khan’s paper suffers from a number of deficiencieswhich may be grouped under the following categories:1. Inaccuracies in the description of positions relating to modernsecular economics.2. Questionable interpretation of Islamic positions.3. Technical and logical errors in model construction.I shall take up these points in turn.To begin with, Prof. Khan’s description of the premises of moderneconomic theory of consumer behavior and its subsequent critique isinaccurate. According to him, “Modern economic theory studiesconsumer behavior under the following premises: i) It is assumed that aconsumer will decide what to consume and how much to consume only togain the material benefits and satisfaction. ii) It is generally assumedthat all his consumption is geared to satisfy his own needs. He is notbothered to satisfy anyone else’s needs. iii) It is assumed that a consumerbehaves rationally. This among other things, means:(a) the consumer will neither be a miser nor an unnecesssry spendthrift.(b) he will not hoard his wealth.” (p. 2)Modern economic theory of consumer behavior do&e not assume any ofthe said premises given by Prof. Khan. What modern theory msumes isthat a consumer with given income allocates his spending on differentgoods and services in such a way that he maximizes his utility orsatisfaction. According to modern theory, it does not matter whether aconsumer is a miser, spendthrift or a hoarder. Also it does not matter ...

Abstract:
In part and concurrently, this study intends to ascertain the economic literacy, learning results, and consumption habits of students majoring in economics education at Jambi University. Regression analysis was used to examine this quantitative study. 101 members of Jambi University's 2019 Economics Education major class served as the research subjects. Using surveys and documentation, research data was gathered, and SPSS was used to process it. The analysis's findings indicate that: 1) College students lack excitement for saving, and their excessive spending habits make it challenging for them to be wise consumers. 2) The learning outcomes attained in economic learning may be used to gauge a person's capacity to identify sensible economic activities or non-consumptive conduct. 3) Students' consumption behavior decreases when economic literacy and student learning results go up, and vice versa. According to this research, children should better comprehend economic literacy, learning objectives, and consumptive behaviour. According to the findings of this study, economic literacy and learning outcomes have a negative and substantial impact on students majoring in economics at the University of Jambi.

Abstract:
The Qur'an is a source of excavation and development of Islamic teachings in various dimensions of human life. This paper tries to develop economic studies from an economic point of view based on the interpretation of the Qur'an. As a methodology, tafsir plays an important role in order to develop the discipline of Islamic economics. The model of economic interpretation derived from the thematic interpretation of the Qur'an is developed through four phases including; Classification of Qur'anic verses related to economics, understanding them based on chronology, micro and macro context, and socioeconomic contextualization. In summary, this paper reveals that consumption behavior in the Qur'an is harmoniously regulated, gradual and systematically to propose a new model of consumption for Muslims through Islamic consumption behavior.

Abstract:
AbstractPurpose - The problem of consumption in the framework of Islamic economics is how to fulfill needs so that satisfaction is achieved, full of ethics by adding social preferences and benefits, and hoping to achieve the pleasure of Allah SWT.Methodology - Such consumer behavior should be based on Islamic moral consumption ethics with the guidelines of the Qur'an and Sunnah. The principles of consumption within the framework of Islamic ethics, namely (i) the principle of permissibility and generosity; (ii) Responsibility and Simplicity Principles; (iii) Principles of Balance and Fairness; and (iv) Priority and Morality Principles. Findings - All consumption ethics are aimed at achieving falah, which is a noble and prosperous life in this world and the hereafter with the fulfillment of the needs of human life in a balanced way. The fulfillment of community needs will have an impact called mashlahah (individual and social welfare) in the hope of achieving the pleasure of Allah SWT. So it is fitting that the consumption of a Muslim is as a means of help to worship Allah SWT. So its consumption must conform to the hierarchy of essential (darūriyyāt), complementary (hājiyyāt) and embellished (taḥsīniyyāt) needs. Islam forbids consumers to take extreme actions (up to the upper limit) in the form of excessive consumption (israf) or wasteful consumption (tabdhir), and also avoid stingy consumption. The prohibition set is not to limit mankind, but to ensure the benefits are maintained and harm is avoided in consumption. Keywords: Consumption, Ethics, Islam, Falah.

Abstract:
One of the main goals of economics is to satisfy the wants of consumer. Like as conventional economics, Islamic economics has also its own law of consumption which is superior to that of conventional economics. This paper presents an empirical survey report on the application of Islamic consumer theory in Bangladesh. The survey is conducted on 184 graduate students of economics from university of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Besides, the consumption framework of Islamic economics has been discussed in this paper. The research finds that, the majority percent of respondents consider Halal (lawful), Haram (unlawful), economic disadvantages of other consumers, scope of reward and punishment in hereafter life (life after death) in their consumptions and other economic activities. The report explores that, though the wants is unlimited, the respondents are capable to control their wants and choose moderate and simple standard of living. In addition, they mentioned that, the use of interest is not essential to run economic activities and interest free economy is possible. It is found that, a large proportion of the respondents did not study Islamic economics due to unavailability of the reading materials in spite of having their interest while half of the respondents read it. Finally, the opinion is found that, religious and ethical instruments (Zakat, donation, hereafter life etc.) should be included in the syllabus of modern economics in school, college and university level. The findings satisfy the assumptions of Islamic consumption framework. Finally, it presents the problems, prospects and recommendations to apply the Islamic consumer theory in Bangladesh.

In fact, this paper is following to present the work of Thorstein Bunde Veblen unifying the two other terms, as an early brick to the economic theory, influencing the becoming of the economic theory and practice. Starting from Veblen’s key idea and special approach of teleology, in economics particularly, we’ve chosen as example of a final and determined thing/aspect the act of consumption. That is in the Veblenian sense, of conspicuous consumption, and the consumption as general human and economic activity. Using synthesis of all theoretical and practical sources, the result of the paper is that one of consumption, even luxury, which takes into account the constraints of nowadays phenomena and activities around the world. Abstract:
In Muslim economic activities, consumption behavior should be aligned with the principles of Islamic economics, which include justice, balance, and blessings. Excessive and unnecessary consumption should be avoided as it can harm oneself and others. Islam teaches its followers not to harm themselves in this world and the hereafter by engaging in excessive behavior to fulfill their needs and worldly pursuits. This research adopts a qualitative approach by conducting a literature review and content analysis to identify key concepts in Islamic economics relevant to Muslim consumption behavior in economic activities. A good integration between the concepts and applications of Islamic economics in the context of consumer behavior can shape ethical, responsible, and sustainable consumption behavior. These concepts guide the choice of halal products and promote a balance between the needs and desires of individual Muslims. Furthermore, the implementation of these concepts in daily consumption practices can help Muslim individuals avoid excessive consumption, minimize wastefulness, and enhance social benefits in economic activities.

Abstract:
Escalation is a key characteristic of many consumption behaviors that has not received theoretical attention. This paper aims to propose both a definition and a theoretical treatment of escalation in consumption. We define escalation as a subject’s attempt to obtain “more” or engage in consumption behaviors that are “more intense” on a measurable, quantitative or qualitative, objective or subjective, scale (more difficult ski slopes, stronger drugs, harder sex, better restaurants etc.), even if the subject preferred less intense consumption behaviors in the past. Further, this evolution in behavior also occurs if the budget constraint does not change. We will find endogenous and exogenous theoretical microfoundations for escalation in models of hedonic adaptation, desire for novelty, acquisition of consumption skills, rising aspirations, positional effects, and envy. However, we will also discuss the possibility that the tendency to escalate is a specific innate behavior inherent to human nature. Finally, we will propose a preliminary theoretical formalization of such behavior and indicate the possible implications of taking escalation into adequate consideration. Abstract:
Milton Friedman argued that giving parents freedom to choose schools would improve education. His argument was simple and compelling because it extended results from markets for consumer goods to education. We review the evidence, which yields surprisingly mixed results on Friedman's prediction. A key reason is that households often seem to choose schools based on their absolute achievement rather than their value added. We show that this can be rational in a model based on three ingredients that economists have highlighted since Friedman worked on the issue. First, education is an investment into human capital. Second, labor markets can feature wage premia: Individuals of a given skill level may receive higher wages if they match to more productive firms. Third, distance influences school choice and the placements that schools produce. These factors imply that choice alone is too crude a mechanism to ensure the effective provision of schooling.

Abstract:
Electricity consumption is determined by the use of electronic gadgets, income level of family members, choice of connection and size of the houses. In India, the energy use is at disaggregate level. Electricity is necessary in various types of activities and in each it takes a different character. There is a strong two-way relationship between economic development and energy consumption. The dynamics of growth in one sector with more residential electricity brings realistic potential for efficiency. The increasing availability and usefulness of electricity set the limit to its requirements in a region and the actual level of its consumption at any given time depends on a number of socio-economic factors which are usually not taken into account in making estimates of future requirements. In India, the growth in demand has exceeded the growth in generation capacity as a result the country is facing acute energy and peak shortages. The studies also discuss possible pricing options to bring about more efficient use of limited generated capacity as well as addressing the issue of equity. Some studies also tried to estimate the final demand which is price sensitive for both residential and industrial consumers. This study attempted to bring out literature reviews covering Studies on Electricity Economics; Studies on Household Electricity Consumption; and Studies on Managing Electricity Consumption.

This paper explores the factors potentially responsible for the overconsumption of office paper and estimates the adverse environmental and economic impact of overconsumption. Data were collected from the employees of selected higher educational institutions in Oman. Technical factors, workplace environment, printing preferences and lack of awareness were found the main cause of overconsumption. Environmental and economic impact of the paper was estimated from the actual amount of paper consumed using standard formulas from literature. The institutions have used 5,200 reams (13 tons) of 80gm A4 size paper in one year. The economic cost of the paper was 7,800 OMR (20,280 US$). The environmental impact estimated are: cutting of 312 trees, 73,970 Ibs of CO2 gas emission, 144,742 KWh of energy consumption, solid waste produced 29,614 lbs and 247975 gallons of water were wasted. Changing printing preferences, a significant amount of economic and environmental resources to the tune of 44.8% can be saved.

Abstract:
In this essay, we discuss the importance of consumption inequality in the debate concerning the measurement of disparities in economic well-being. We summarize the advantages and disadvantages of using consumption as opposed to income for measuring trends in economic well-being. We critically evaluate the available evidence on these trends, and in particular discuss how the literature has evolved in its assessment of whether consumption inequality has grown as much as or less than income inequality. We provide some novel evidence on three relatively unexplored themes: inequality in different spending components, inequality in leisure time, and intergenerational consumption mobility.

Abstract:
Economic growth of an economy is defined as the steady state path through which the productivity of an economy is improved and increases the levels of national output and income. The government consumption expenditures and investment play a key role in the process of investigating the macroeconomic performance of an economy and determinants of economic growth. The countries which grow quickly, invest a substantial fraction of their GDP for consumption expenditures as well for the sources which encourage private investment. The objective of this study to calculate the volatility in economics growth in Pakistan. The annual time series data are used from 1975 to 2014 from WDI, Economics survey of Pakistan and Hand Book of Statistics. GARCH model has been used to measure volatility of all variables. The empirical results of the study confirmed that the volatility of the different variables (volatility of inflation, volatility of interest rate, volatility of political instability, volatility of GDP, and volatility of foreign direct investment) significant affect the government consumption expenditures and private investment in the economy of Pakistan. The study analyzed data by using the autoregressive distributive lag model which is mainly used in time series data Econometrics to estimate the non-stationary models with mix order of integration. The estimated results of the study evaluated that volatility of the inflation lead to uncertainty which is also suggested by the Able (1980) and negatively affect the economy consumption expenditures as well as private investment in the economy of Pakistan. Because uncertainty directly affects the cost of capital as well as reduce private investor confidence.

Abstract:
One way that risk-averse households protect consumption levels is to borrow and use insurance mechanisms. Another way, common in low-income economies, is to diversify economic activities and make conservative production and employment choices. Households thus tend toward limiting exposure only to shocks that can be handled with available credit and insurance. Typically, both types of mechanisms are studied independently but much more can be learned by studying them together. First, we obtain a more complete picture of risks, costs, and insurance possibilities. Second, it opens the way to considering biases in standard tests of credit and insurance.

Abstract:
The study explores both the long- and short-run liaisons between three conceptual dimensions: economic growth, energy consumption, and trade openness in 29 net energy importing middle-income economies using annual data from 1990 to 2019. We hereby assess ARDL models which examine the long-run links by integrations in between these three conceptual variables, and additionally Dumitrescu-Hurlin and Granger causality tests for panel and individual country models, respectively. For panel country samples, we reveal bidirectional causality connection between trade openness and economic growth along with unidirectional causalities from economic growth to energy consumption and from energy consumption to trade openness in the short run. Bidirectional positive feedback relationships stand between economic growth- energy consumption and trade openness- energy consumption in the full sample and the upper middle-middle economies subsample in the long run. Findings for individual country estimations reveal significant long-run relationships between energy consumption and economic growth in 12, energy consumption -and trade openness in 6, and economic growth -and trade openness in 9 of the middle-income economies examined.

Abstract:
Diverse perception of natural capital and sustainability in opposite approaches of environmental economics and ecological economics has impact on understanding and defining of sustainable development. Ecological economics approach based on strong and very strong sustainability is too ambitious for contemporary generation, although environmental economics approach based on weak sustainability is more realistic, but insufficient. Weaknesses of mainstream economics gave heterodoxy broad field for redefinition of sustainable development and for new synthesis for this socio-economic category. Demographic changes, duplication of Western consumption patterns in emerging economies and intensive pressure of global production and consumption on environment are the reasons why new agreements at international level on climate, energy, food security, access to clean water and protection other natural resources are needed. Effective coordination of actions and application of good governance standards taking into account such matters as human existential problems and needs, equity, access to information, social participation as well as indicators for sustainable development and green economy are also necessary,

Abstract:
Materialism and consumerism influence people’s consumption behaviour, considering that the purpose of consumption is not only to fulfil life’s needs but also for mere satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of Islamization of economics, especially the theory of consumption, referring to the theory of Islamization of science of al-Attas and al-Faruqi. The results of this study indicate that the Islamization of economics in consumption theory is very important to liberate society from the secular doctrine of materialism; Islamizing the goods and services concept by limiting it with the term of h}al?lan t}ayyiban; incorporating the element of mas}lah}ah as the main foundation in consumption instead of satisfaction. With the Islamization of economics on consumption theory, it is hoped that it can provide a change and enlightenment, particularly in the consumption behaviour of the Muslim community, and generally for economic development.

Abstract:
Electric power is the basic industry of a modern country. The rapid development of the power industry has promoted economic development and social progress. With the establishment of the carbon neutrality target of carbon peak, China’s power industry is also facing new situations and new challenges. This paper innovatively introduces the concept of allometric growth in biology, and uses the data of provincial electricity consumption and economic development from 1972 to 2017, to study the allometric growth relationship between electricity consumption and economics in China at multiple scales. Combined with the spatial autocorrelation analysis method, the temporal and spatial characteristics of allometric growth between electricity consumption and economic development were researched based on the analysis of spatial correlation of GDP electricity consumption intensity. The results show that: (1) The provincial GDP electricity consumption intensity shows an aggregate distribution, and the local aggregate pattern changed significantly from 1972 to 2017. (2) The High-High Cluster gradually disappeared, and the Low-Low Cluster moved southward, appearing in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. (3) The differential growth coefficient of electricity consumption and economic development increased initially and decreased from 1972 to 2017. (4) GDP would increase by 7.4%, 20.1%, and 15.6% in the simulation of electricity consumption, increasing 10% at the three stages of China’s economic development. (5) The allometric growth coefficients of electricity consumption and economic development are very different in the three economic belts, eight economic zones, and provinces with different characteristics at the different stages of economic development. Formulating differentiated regulation policies for regional economic development and electricity consumption will be conducive to the coordinated development of electric power production and the national economy.

Abstract:
Analyzing account-level data from an account aggregator, we find that households increase consumption when they receive expected tax refunds, as if they face liquidity constraints. However, these same households smooth consumption when making payments in other years, primarily by transferring funds among liquid accounts. Even households carrying credit card debt smooth consumption when making payments, and even highly liquid households spend out of refunds. This behavior is inconsistent with pure liquidity constraints or hand-to-mouth behavior and is most consistent with a mental accounting life-cycle model. (JEL D12, E21, G51, H24, H31)
