Abstract:
Road traffic has many negative socioeconomic impacts on society. A key problem is the risk of deadly accidents. The risk, to a high extend is reduced in developed societies. However, the accidents are still ubiquitous. There are various approaches for reducing accidents such as improving the infrastructure, educating better drivers and incentivizing drivers for driving safe. For the latter, the way is to analyse driving behaviour and this is possible using sensors such as inertial measurement units (IMU) without hindering privacy. Insurance companies approach this issue via Usage Based Insurance (UBI) products, where the premium is dynamically calculated by evaluating the driver based on measuring vehicle dynamics and other contextual data. Due to utilization of devices that use different IMUs, generalization of measured data is an issue for correct evaluation and fairness.The thesis deals with providing tools for filling the evaluation gap of IMUs for this purpose. The study began with a survey involving IMUs in the market. Considering technical and economic aspects, the most suitable ones were selected for evaluation. A modular system called quad-IMU (QIMU) was designed and developed. A selected IMU (BMI160) was incorporated into a QIMU and compared to two widely used IMUs in two scenarios; harsh breaking and static measurement using raw digital linear acceleration measurements. Root mean square errors (RMSE) showed that the BMI160 outperformed the others by approximately one and two orders of magnitude, respectively. The QIMU showed to be a promising framework that needs to be explored further for evaluating IMUs in-house in a rapid, low-cost and reliable manner.

Olyckorna är dock fortfarande allestädes närvarande. Det finns olika metoder för att minska olyckor som att förbättra infrastrukturen, utbilda bättre förare och incitament för förare att köra säkert. Det sistnämnda kan göras genom att analysera körbeteendet, och detta är möjligt med hjälp av sensorer som tröghetssensorer (IMU) utan att hindra integriteten. Försäkringsbolag närmar sig denna fråga via användningsbaserade försäkringar (UBI) -produkter, där premien dynamiskt beräknas genom att utvärdera föraren baserat på mätning av fordonsdynamik och annan kontextuell data. På grund av användningen av enheter som använder olika IMU-enheter är generalisering av uppmätta data en öppen fråga för korrekt utvärdering och rättvisa.Avhandlingen handlar om att tillhandahålla verktyg för att fylla utvärderingsgapet för IMUer för detta ändamål. Studien började med en undersökning med IMUer på marknaden. Med tanke på tekniska och ekonomiska aspekter valdes de mest lämpliga för utvärdering. Ett modulärt system kallat quad-IMU (QIMU) designades och utvecklades. En vald IMU (BMI160) inkorporerades i en QIMU och jämfördes med två ofta använda IMUer i två scenarier; hård inbromsning och statisk mätning med hjälp av raka digitala linjära accelerationsmätningar. Det genomsnittliga medelkvadratfelet (RMSE) visade att BMI160 överträffade de andra med ungefär en och två storleksordningar. QIMU visade sig vara en lovande ram som behöver undersökas mer för att utvärdera IMUer internt på ett snabbt, billigt och pålitligt sätt.

Abstract:
Motion capture plays an important role in a wide range of fields including film production, game industry, sports analysis and medicine. However, commercial optical motion capture systems are expensive due to their reliance on high speed high resolution cameras and accurate shutter synchronization. In the thesis, we present a technique based on continuous video exposure and stereo streak matching to do motion capture with a low cost, simple, portable and scalable setup of consumer grade cameras and LED markers. Neither shutter synchronization nor global shutters are required for geometric calibration and motion reconstruction. The system is presented in four stages, camera calibration and synchronization, streak segmentation and 2-D track extraction, stereo track matching and multi-view fusing. The system is qualitatively demonstrated through capturing human motion and fan spinning motion, and quantitatively evaluated by motions with known spatial trajectory and the rigidity of rigid moving objects.

Accurate quantification of neurodegenerative disease progression and neurocognitive decline is an ongoing challenge that muddles efforts to understand and treat these conditions. The golden standard to track neurodegenerative disease progression is a neurocognitive assessment administered through a series of forms and questionnaires, both of which suffer from high retest variability. Thus, there is a need for a validated biomarker that can accurately track neurocognitive decline or disease progression unobtrusively. Clinical studies have shown that saccade latency - a measure of eye movement reaction time - can be significantly different between healthy subjects and neurodegenerative disease patients. Hence, we propose and test a system that enables measurement and tracking of saccade latency outside of the clinical environment, without relying on supplemental or special-purpose illumination. iTracker-face, a variant of a deep-learning approach that estimates gaze on mobile devices, was tailored to measure saccade latency on video sequences obtained with an iPhone 6. Additionally, our model-based approach for saccade latency estimation provides a means to automatically detect eye position traces that should not be included in further analysis (AUC = 0.92). We recorded over 20,000 saccade latencies in 30 healthy subjects and observed that there is a substantial amount of intra- and inter- subject variability in the mean saccade latency ([mu]) and associated standard deviation (sigma). Among the subjects with the most saccade latency measurements, [mu] ranged from 128 to 173 ms, while a varied from 24 to 53 ms. Our results suggest that accurate and robust saccade latency determination is feasible using consumer-grade cameras and might therefore enable unobtrusive tracking of neurodegenerative disease progression.

Abstract:
Measuring geometrically complex parts is currently very labor and time intensive in most cases because it involves a significant amount of manual steps to perform a correct measurement. This project was done to find a more productive method of measuring these parts in a production environment. The method should be more productive in terms of speed and ease of use, by automation large parts of the process. The goal is to develop a solution that can measure and check parts automatically using a range camera. A range camera is selected because the data acquisition speed is significantly higher than that of a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The only manual step in this process is the actual scanning, the remaining model making and comparison steps are fully automatic. A two-step method is presented that shows that it is possible to measure parts in a more productive manner, than conventional techniques used to measure object with a complex geometry. The developed method takes the depth images from the range camera and turns them into a point cloud model of the object that needs to be measured. The second step of the solution then automatically compares the point cloud against a CAD-model of the object. This second step is the key to improve measurement productivity. The end result of this is a proof of concept program that incorporates the two step method, that takes in range camera images and as output it gives the scanned object measured against a reference model. The labor time is reduced to the scanning time which is less than a minute. The total processing time to make the comparison takes roughly fifteen minutes depending on the amount of scanning data. The processing can be done in parallel to other production steps. Because a consumer grade range camera is used, only centimeter accuracy is reached. Using more advanced range cameras or similar techniques will lead to more accurate results as noise in the image, is the limiting factor for the algorithm developed here.

Abstract:
Remote sensing has been demonstrated an important tool in agricultural and natural resource management and research applications, however there are limitations that exist with traditional platforms (i.e., hand held sensors, linear moves, vehicle mounted, airplanes, remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and satellites). Rapid technological advances in electronics, computers, software applications, and the aerospace industry have dramatically reduced the cost and increased the availability of remote sensing technologies.Remote sensing imagery vary in spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions and are available from numerous providers. Appendix A presented results of a test project that acquired high-resolution aerial photography with a RPV to map the boundary of a 0.42 km2 fire area. The project mapped the boundaries of the fire area from a mosaic of the aerial images collected and compared this with ground-based measurements. The project achieved a 92.4% correlation between the aerial assessment and the ground truth data.Appendix B used multi-objective analysis to quantitatively assess the tradeoffs between different sensor platform attributes to identify the best overall technology. Experts were surveyed to identify the best overall technology at three different pixel sizes.Appendix C evaluated the positional accuracy of a relatively low cost UAV designed for high resolution remote sensing of small areas in order to determine the positional accuracy of sensor readings. The study evaluated the accuracy and uncertainty of a UAV flight route with respect to the programmed waypoints and of the UAV's GPS position, respectively. In addition, the potential displacement of sensor data was evaluated based on (1) GPS measurements on board the aircraft and (2) the autopilot's circuit board with 3-axis gyros and accelerometers (i.e., roll, pitch, and yaw). The accuracies were estimated based on a 95% confidence interval or similar methods. The accuracy achieved in the second and third manuscripts demonstrates that reasonably priced, high resolution remote sensing via RPVs and UAVs is practical for agriculture and natural resource professionals.

With the ever increasing number of Internet of Things devices going out on the market for consumers that are Zigbee certified there is a need for security testing. This is to make sure that security standards are upheld and improved upon in order to make sure networks are protected from unauthorized users. Even though a lot of research and testing has been done on the Zigbee key exchange mechanism, called Zigbee commissioning, improvements have still not been enough with severe vulnerabilities in consumer grade devices still existing today. The devices tested in this study use EZ-mode commissioning in order to exchange the network key between a Zigbee coordinator and a Zigbee end device in order to encrypt later communication after being paired.  By using a simple radio receiver and a packet capturing program such as Wireshark an eavesdropping attack was conducted in order to capture the network key. The experiment demonstrates that this is still a weak point as the network key was successfully captured using eavesdropping. The analysis of the results show that previous criticisms of Zigbee commissioning have still not fully been addressed and can be a potential weak point in networks that use Zigbee certified IoT products.

Abstract:
In this thesis we propose a solution to how a system can find and track people, as well as recognizing their gestures, in a $360^\circ$ field of view using consumer grade products. We describe a system connecting multiple depth cameras in an array and have them operate as a single camera controlled by a single computer. Using a single camera providing features such as detection, tracking and recognizing gestures of people, we specifically focus on the difficulties of preserving these features in moving forward to an array of cameras. We propose a solution based on Microsoft Kinect and Kinect SDK, using linear transformation to account for a fixed camera model to combine skeleton data from an array of Kinect sensors. Furthermore, we use positional based identification to determine whether people are being tracked by another camera in the system. The contributions of this work include insight into the challenges of building this kind of system based on Kinect hardware and software intended for use on a single computer, such as performance bottlenecks, along with possible alternative solutions. In particular, we present performance measurements for a single computer running up to four sensors and show a system that can run satisfactorily with up to at least 5 sensors on today's computers. We show what requirements on hardware can be expected for such a system, as well as where there are potential limits as the number of sensors increase.

Abstract:
The recycling rate of post-consumer apparel waste is low. This is compounded by our limited understanding of the fibre recovered from apparel waste and a lack of development in novel applications. Motivated by the growing rate of accumulation in unwanted clothing, this study focused on a number of integrated research themes aimed at understanding the nature of reclaimed cotton fibre, its use in paper-based materials and its utilisation in apparel related applications. Initially, the investigation characterised reclaimed cotton fibres from two different recovery machines (pinned air-layer and cutting mill). The results showed that neither process was capable of producing adequate fibre quality for fine yarn manufacture. The fibres exhibited extensive surface damage, length shortening and an increase in length distribution. After the initial characterisation, studies were undertaken to investigate the use of paper technology to increase the possibility of using reclaimed fibre in apparel. Strength is an important property in apparel related applications, therefore, the strength of reclaimed cotton-based paper was enhanced. The effects of a 4% sodium hydroxide pre-treatment on the beating performance and resultant sheet properties of reclaimed fibre pulp were investigated. At low beating levels, the results showed a significant 35% and 39% increase in tensile strength and energy absorption, respectively. With the treatment it is, therefore, possible to obtain a strong paper with high bulk, which can be further utilised to improve surface softness. Optimum dry and wet strength enhancement of the resultant paper was obtained with the combined addition of 1% carboxymethyl cellulose and 2% polyamideamine-epichlorhydrin. The development of wet strength was vital in order to facilitate uniform twist insertion in subsequent paper yarn manufacture. This study was one of the first to test the viability of using reclaimed cotton fibre in the production of paper yarns suitable for apparel manufacture. The wet-strengthened reclaimed-fibre paper was slit into 3 mm width ribbons, dampened, then twisted into yarns. The resultant yarns (46–193 tex) were uniform but lacked sufficient strength for use in weaving and knitting processes. Analysis of a commercial paper yarn, OJO+ , suggested that strength could be improved if fibre orientation was increased in the machine direction. A further application, in the form of a jacket, was trialled. The focus here was to test sewability using a variety of seam and stitch formations to sew together denim-derived cotton paper. A simple design using lap seams with straight stitching was established as the most effective construction. The final jacket satisfied industry requirements on seam strength and efficiency, however, further investigation into improving comfort and wear-ability will be essential.

This study focused on two segments that have emerged from an evolution within the children's market- the tween and young teen markets. However, few market researchers had investigated the transition between these two stages - leaving primary school and going to high school. Despite there being a rather small age gap between older tweens and young teens, the numerous challenges brought about due to the transition from primary school to high school could affect areas such as academic performance, friendships and so forth. It was the aim of this study to uncover any changes in relation to the consumer behaviour and brand preferences of young teens occurred due to this transitional period. The literature review looked at the international and South African older tween and young teen markets through market identification and characterization. The transition phase from primary school to high school looked at the similarities and differences of older tweens and young teens and the social and academic impact of school transitions on grade eights. Four areas were identified that were said to influence one's clothing consumer behaviour and brand preferences as a result of the school transition to high school. These were developmental changes; the influence of one's reference groups; role models and the media that one subscribes to, and the financial circumstances in which one lives. The researcher also investigated brand loyalty and the influence of peer pressure on the clothing consumer behaviour and brand preferences of young teens. Furthermore, the literature review covered branding and how fashion and brands influenced the consumer behaviour of young teens. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in this study. The primary research tools used were the two surveys that were successfully administered to two hundred and seventy four grade sevens and eights in ten schools in the South Western Cape. Permission was obtained from the Western Cape Education Department and a time restriction was given for the surveys to be administered to the schools. The researcher also used qualitative research methods in the form of experience interviews with nine members of the academic and business community who were deemed knowledgeable on the topics of child development, branding, consumer behaviour and school transitions. Limited focus groups were conducted, although this was primarily used to construct the questionnaires. Furthermore, the researcher made use of secondary data sources such as reputable and peer reviewed journal articles, books and so forth. Out of the five school sets in this research study the De Kuilen school set showed statistically significant results between grade sevens and eights with regards to developmental, reference group, financial and brand preference changes. The Kuils River school set also showed statistically significant results with regards to developmental, role models, peer pressure and brand preference changes. However, the rest of the school sets showed minor or failed to show statistical differences between the two grades in question. On the whole no significant developmental, reference group, role model and peer pressure changes were noted between grade sevens and grade eights. On the other hand, two of the findings agreed with the initial hypotheses that were put forward. Financial changes did occur, as grade eights received more pocket money than grade sevens and parents were still involved in purchasing clothing for their young teens; and as expected, young teens failed to prove brand loyal. Consequently, although two null hypotheses (financial changes and brand loyalty) were accepted out of six proposed and two school sets out of the five showed statistical differences between the two grades on the matters investigated, the primary null hypothesis was rejected. The researcher concluded that young teens in the South Western Cape did not change their clothing consumer behaviour and brand preferences after entering high school. However, this conclusion was limited only to those schools and students who participated in the study. The researcher recommended that in general both grades could be targeted together as one clothing brand market. Especially when young teens were in the first part of grade eight, as both markets liked wearing brands such as Billabong and Roxy for very similar reasons. In addition, the lack of brand loyalty was not seen to be a hindrance, but an opportunity for marketers to attract young teens due to the fashionability and affordability of the clothing. Their purchasing power not only by themselves, but also more often than not with the help of their parents made them a lucrative market worthy of attention. On the other hand, while the researcher may have gained more knowledge from using more qualitative research, as some information from the questionnaires contradicted each other, it was also suggested that due the two age groups being so similar, it may have been more beneficial to compare two differing age groups such as grade sevens and nines.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are specialized systems that allow users to control a computer or a machine using their brain waves. BCI systems allow patients with severe physical impairments, such as those suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebral palsy and locked-in syndrome, to communicate and regain physical movements with the help of specialized equipment. With the development of BCI technology in the second half of the 20th century and the advent of consumer-grade BCI devices in the late 2000s, brain-controlled systems started to find applications not only in the medical field, but in areas such as entertainment. One particular area that is gaining more evidence due to the arrival of consumer-grade devices is the field of computer games, which has become increasingly popular in BCI research as it allows for more user-friendly applications of BCI technology in both healthy and unhealthy users. However, numerous challenges are yet to be overcome in order to advance in this field, as the origins and mechanics of the brain waves and how they are affected by external stimuli are not yet fully understood. In this sense, a systematic literature review of BCI games based on consumer-grade technology was performed. Based on its results, two BCI games, one using attention and the other using meditation as control signals, were developed in order to investigate key aspects of player interaction: the influence of graphical elements on attention and control; the influence of auditory stimuli on meditation and work load; and the differences both in performance and multiplayer game experience, all in the context of neurofeedback-based BCI games.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the role of marbling texture on beef palatability, muscle histology, and collagen characteristics of beef strip loin steaks. Beef strip loins (n = 117) were selected from three quality grade treatments [Top Choice (Modest[superscript 00] – Moderate[superscript 100] marbling), Low Choice (Small[superscript 0] – Small[superscript 100] marbling), and Select (Slight[superscript 0] – Slight[superscript 100] marbling)] to equally represent three different marbling texture groups: fine, medium and coarse, via visual appraisal with the USDA marbling texture standards. Consumers (n = 104) rated all marbling texture groups similar (P > 0.05) for tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and overall liking, as well as rated a similar (P > 0.05) percentage of samples from each marbling texture group acceptable for each palatability trait. Moreover, consumers indicated no preference (P > 0.05) among marbling texture groups for visual desirability or likelihood to purchase. There were no differences (P > 0.05) among marbling texture treatments for Warner-Bratzler shear force, slice shear force, and pressed juice percentage. However, trained sensory panelists rated coarse marbled steaks higher (P < 0.05) than fine or medium marbled steaks for both beef flavor intensity and sustained juiciness as well as higher (P < 0.05) for initial juiciness than medium textured steaks. This minimal impact on palatability was further supported through evaluation of muscle histology and collagen traits. Marbling texture did not affect collagen characteristics, as coarse marbled steaks were similar (P > 0.05) to both fine and medium marbled steaks for soluble collagen, insoluble collagen, and total collagen content. Furthermore, all marbling texture groups (fine, medium, and coarse) performed similarly (P > 0.05) during the peak thermal transition phase of the perimysial fraction of collagen. However, marbling texture impacted (P < 0.05) adipocyte cross-sectional area, where coarse steaks had larger adipocytes in comparison to fine marbled steaks, but medium marbled steaks were similar (P > 0.05) to both coarse and fine marbled steaks. Similarly, quality grade affected adipocyte size, as Top Choice and Low Choice possessed larger (P < 0.05) adipocytes than Select steaks. However, marbling texture did not impact (P > 0.05) perimysial thickness. Additionally, marbling texture did not affect the percentage of myosin heavy chain (MHC) Type I fibers within each steak. However, medium marbled steaks possessed a greater (P < 0.05) percentage of MHC Type 2A fibers than both fine and coarse marbled steaks. The opposite trend was displayed in the percentage of MHC Type IIX fibers, as fine and coarse marbled steaks possessed more (P < 0.05) MHC Type IIX fibers in comparison to medium marbled steaks. There were no differences (P > 0.05) among quality grades for fiber type or marbling texture and quality grade for fiber cross-sectional area. Results from this study indicate marbling texture has minimal impact on eating quality and muscle histology; therefore coarse marbled carcasses should not be excluded from current and future branded beef programs.

Interactions between instructors and large projected displays in classrooms often lack cost-effective and easy-to-use solutions. Instead, instructors mostly use either a standard laser pointer, or a computer mouse or touchscreen on a laptop or tablet computer to interact with the content of their presentation slides on large screens. Our research investigates the possibility of using relatively inexpensive, consumer-grade tracking devices that can be easily installed in classrooms and inertial sensors that can be held in an instructor’s hand to support this type of interaction. Our goal was to provide more functionality than a simple laser pointer. We compared the accuracy and ease of pointing performance using our new system to a high-end research system and to a computer mouse. We used a Fitts’s law paradigm to experimentally evaluate pointing performance and accuracy. We found that our low-cost system is as accurate and as fast as the high-end research system and, somewhat surprisingly, also as accurate as a computer mouse. Because of the large size of the displays in classrooms and the small tracking volumes of most consumer-grade tracking systems, we investigated the possibility of using multiple off-the-shelf hardware units connected with each other to maximize the coverage area at the front of a classroom. We present a possible design that could be scaled to enough devices connected together to cover the front area of a classroom of almost any size. Our investigation was not conclusive. It requires additional research to prove the feasibility of our system in real classroom environments.

Portable and wearable computing devices such as smart watches, navigation units, mobile phones, and tablet computers commonly ship with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) supported locational awareness. Locational functionality is no longer limited to navigation specific devices such as satellite navigation devices and location tracking systems. Instead the use of these technologies has extended to become secondary functionality on many devices, including mobile phones, cameras, portable computers, and video game consoles. The increase in use of location aware technology is of use to forensic investigators as it has the potential to provide historic locational information. The evidentiary value of these devices to forensic investigators is currently limited due to the lack of available forensic tools and published methods to properly acquire and analyse these data sources. This research addresses this issue through the synthesis of common processes for the development of forensic procedure to acquire and interpret historic locational data from embedded, locationally aware devices. The research undertaken provides a framework for the generation of forensic procedure to enable the forensic extraction of historical locational data. The framework is device agnostic, relying instead on differential analysis and structured testing to produce a validated method for the extraction of locational history. This framework was evaluated against five devices, selected on a basis of market penetration, availability and a stage of deduplication. The examination of the framework took place in a laboratory developed specifically for the research. This laboratory replicates all identified sources of location data for the devices selected. In this case the laboratory is able to simulate cellular (2G and 3G), GNSS (NAVSTAR and GLONASS), and Wi-Fi locationing services. The laboratory is a closed-sky facility, meaning that the laboratory is contained within a faraday cage and all signals are produced and broadcast internally. Each selected device was run through a series of simulations. These simulations involved the broadcast of signals, replicating the travel of a specific path. Control data was established through the use of appropriate data recording systems, for each of the simulated location signals. On completion of the simulation, each device was forensically acquired and analysed in accordance with the proposed framework. For each experiment carried out against the five devices, the control and experimental data were compared. In this examination any divergence less than those expected for GNSS were ignored. Any divergence greater than this was examined to establish cause. Predictable divergence was accepted and non-predictable divergence would have been noted as a limitation. In all instances where data was recovered, all divergences were found to be predictable. Post analysis, the research found that the proposed framework was successful in producing locational forensic procedure in a non-device specific manner. This success was confirmed for all the devices tested.

The demand for animal products is projected to increase progressively due to extensive urbanization, rapid growth of human population and income dynamics. However, the evolution of food demand is strictly linked to the change in consumer preferences. Consumers around the world are progressively becoming more concerned and aware about food standards, quality and safety issues. The purpose of this study was to determine consumers’ preference regarding safe and quality beef and WTP for graded beef in Polokwane municipality. The research surveyed 150 consumers using a structured questionnaire to collect data on consumer characteristics and responses to different bid levels for graded beef. Analytical methods were descriptive statistics, Likert scales, contingent valuation method to evaluate respondents’ mean WTP for graded beef and logit model to determine the dependence of WTP on socioeconomic factors. Results showed that consumers prefer their beef tender, with less fat and bones and labelled with price, grade/class, size or quantity of the product and lastly quality inspection or certification indicator. Over half of the respondents (53%) were aware of grading or classification systems. The results further revealed that most respondents are willing to pay an increase of 16.04 % over the current price for beef. This could be an opportunity for investments in beef label industry. Consumer characteristics including age, income, gender and household size significantly influenced WTP for graded beef in Polokwane Municipality. Marketing strategies considered by beef product investors should target young, female and wealthier consumers. Grading with respect to quality attributes would make beef sales at differentiated prices possible. This will eventually enhance sales volume and returns for all stakeholders along the value chain

Cette thèse est composée de trois essaies portant sur l'analyse empirique de la grande distribution et le comportement d'achat des consommateurs. Le premier chapitre est dédié à l'étude des programmes de fidélité des supermarchés et leur impact sur la demande de marques de distributeur (MDD). Souvent les supermarchés lient les avantages fidélité à l'achat en marques de distributeurs, quelles sont les motivations des supermarchés à faire cela? C'est la question que cette étude cherche à répondre d'un point de vue empirique. Je travaille sur des données extraites d'un panel représentatif des consommateurs concernant les achats des ménages français, et l'utilisation d'une méthode structurelle d'estimation de demande. Les résultats sont conformes aux faits: les MDD sont des produits moins préférés vis-à-vis les marques nationales (MN) de même qualité. Cependant, la carte fidélité a, en effet, un impact positif sur le choix du consommateur: ceux qui portent une carte fidélité ont une probabilité supérieure de choisir des MDD que ceux qui ne l'ont pas. Par ailleurs, l'impact d'un programme de fidélité sur la demande des MDD est moins important chez les détenteurs de plusieurs cartes. Le deuxième chapitre, co-écrit avec Daniel Herrera Araujo, vise à mesurer les coûts d'achat des consommateurs à partir des données de panel concernant les achats des ménages en France. Quand l'analyse économique tient compte des coûts d'achat, que rationalisent l'hétérogénéité observée en nombre des enseignes visitées par les consommateurs, les conclusions de politique publique peuvent changer remarquablement. Nous identifions les coûts d'achat du consommateur dans le cadre d'un modèle structurel de demande en plusieurs enseignes ainsi qu'en plusieurs produits, qui lie le choix optimale du nombre de supermarchés à visiter (un seule ou plusieurs) aux coûts d'achat. Nous estimons les paramètres du modèle et mesurons le coût d'achat total moyen en 18,7 € par enseigne visitée. Deux quantités y sont comprises: le coût fixe moyen, 1,53 € et le coût de transport moyen 17,1 € par visite. Le troisième chapitre porte sur l'analyse empirique du rôle des tarifs binômes et la fixation du prix de vente (RPM, d'après l'expression anglo-saxonne Resale Price Maintenance) dans la stabilité des prix de vente. Il est largement reconnu dans la littérature économique que la transmission incomplète des chocs de coûts aux prix de vente est expliquée par l'ajustement des marges ainsi que les coûts d'ajustement des prix. Les relations entre fournisseurs et distributeurs et le RPM peuvent renforcer la rigidité des prix. Je présente un modèle structurel de relations verticales dont des tarifs binômes peuvent être adoptées ainsi que le RPM. Ce modèle tient compte de la rigidité des prix de vente à travers des coûts fixes d'ajustement des prix qui sont ajoutés au profit du détaillant. En utilisant des données concernant les ventes de marques de céréales pour le petit déjeuner dans une grande chaîne des supermarchés au Chicago, j'estime la demande, récupère les marges et calcule les limites supérieure et inférieure de l'intervalle que contiennent les vrais coûts d'ajustement. This dissertation consists of three essays on the empirical analysis of grocery retailing and consumer shopping behavior. The first chapter focuses on supermarket loyalty programs and their impact on the demand for private labels. Supermarkets often link loyalty rewards to private label purchases, What are supermarkets' motivations to do this? This empirically examines this link using scanner data on grocery purchases of French households and structural methods of demand estimation. Results are consistent with the industry lore: private labels are less valued products relative to quality-equivalent national brands. However, members of loyalty programs have a larger valuation of private labels than non-members. Moreover, the more prone to subscribe to LPs a customer is, the larger her sensitivity to a price increase and the weaker the expected effects on the demand for private labels. The second chapter, joint with Daniel Herrera Araujo, is inspired by a number of theory papers showing that when shopping costs, that rationalize the observed heterogeneity in consumer shopping patterns, are introduced in economic analysis, policy conclusions can change dramatically. We structurally identify consumer shopping costs using scanner data on grocery purchases of French households. We present a model of demand for multiple stores and products consisting of an optimal stopping problem in terms of individual shopping costs. This rule determines whether to visit one or multiple stores at a shopping period. We then estimate the parameters of the model and recover the distribution of shopping costs. We quantify the total shopping cost in 18.7 € per store sourced on average. This cost has two components, namely, the mean fixed shopping cost, 1.53 € and mean total transport cost of 17.1 € per trip. The third chapter empirically examines the role of nonlinear contracts between manufacturers and retail stores, and Resale Price Maintenance (RPM) on nominal price stability. According to the literature the incomplete transmission of costs shocks into retail prices is explained by the existence of markup adjustment and price adjustment costs. The vertical conduct of the industry and the use of RPM can introduce further price stickiness or reinforce it. I present a structural model of vertical relations allowing for two-part tariffs and RPM, and accounting explicitly for retail price rigidity by including fixed costs of price adjustment in retailer's profit function. Using micro data on sales of breakfast cereals from a large supermarket chain in Chicago, I estimate demand, retrieve margins, and compute bounds for retail price adjustment costs. I find that these costs lie between 1.6% and 3% of its total revenue a year, on average

A complexidade crescente das aplicações e o grande volume de dados utilizados por elas levam a um uso sempre crescente de sistemas distribuídos de alto desempenho. Nas últimas décadas o impacto do consumo de energia cresceu em relevância para o bom funcionamento desses sistemas, e seu tratamento é um grande desafio aos projetistas de hardware, desenvolvedores de aplicações e administradores. A dificuldade desse tratamento decorre do conflito entre consumo de energia e desempenho. Reduzir o consumo de energia das máquinas em um sistema distribuído causa prejuízos ao desempenho, enquanto fazer com que elas trabalhem mais rapidamente proporciona melhor desempenho mas causa aumento no consumo de energia. Nesse cenário, as políticas de escalonamento de tarefas podem levar em conta o consumo de energia, auxiliando no tratamento do problema. Este texto apresenta o desenvolvimento e avaliação de um novo algoritmo de escalonamento de tarefas independentes em grades computacionais federadas, o EHOSEP (Energy-aware Heterogeneous Owner-Share Enforcement Policy). O objetivo do novo algoritmo é tratar o consumo de energia, associando-o a um critério de justiça de propriedade. Esse critério de justiça decorre das chamadas grades federadas ou cooperativas, formadas por recursos computacionais de diferentes proprietários, procurando estimular seu compartilhamento pela garantia de uso justo. Os resultados obtidos com a simulação da aplicação do EHOSEP em diferentes modelos de grade mostram que é possível estimular o uso da grade atendendo-se limites de potência.
The increasing complexity of applications and the large volume of data used by them lead to an ever-increasing use of high-performance distributed systems. In recent decades the energy consumption is becoming more relevant to the proper functioning of these systems, and its management is a major challenge to hardware designers, application developers and administrators. The difficulty of this management arises from the conflict between power consumption and performance. Reducing energy consumption of machines in a distributed system reduces performance as well, while making machines work faster provides better performance at a cost of an increase in energy consumption. In this scenario, task scheduling policies may also consider energy consumption, helping to solve this problem. This document presents the development and evaluation of a new scheduling algorithm for independent tasks in federated computing grids, the EHOSEP (Energyaware Heterogeneous Owner-Share Enforcement Policy). The goal of the new algorithm is to address energy consumption by associating it with a ownership fairness criterion. This fairness criterion stems from the so-called federated or cooperative grids, formed by computational resources of different owners, aiming the resource sharing by the guarantee of fair usage. Results achieved with the simulation of EHOSEP applied to different grid models show that it is possible to stimulate the use of the grid even limiting energy consumption.

This dissertation investigated parental roles in mediating television, music, and the Internet for their children--specifically their fifth graders. Seventy two parents, representing forty seven fifth graders took part in the study. The Television Mediation Scale (Valkenburg, Kremar, Peeters, & Marseille, 1991) provided a framework for the instrument used. Parents were asked a series of questions dealing with television, music, and the Internet. Responses were given on a four point Likert scale. Additionally, participants were asked to estimate the amount of time spent with each medium, discuss the rules in place, the concerns they have with the media, and what principles guide their decisions about how their child uses each type of media. Regarding television, results indicated that parents utilized the restrictive mediation style in which parents set rules for viewing television programs or even prohibit certain shows from being seen. Although parents report using restrictive mediation, more than likely co-viewing is being used most frequently (Weaver & Barbour, 1992). This is plausible when applied to this study considering how close the Mean values are between restrictive mediation (3.36) and co-viewing (3.28). Statistically, no significant findings were reported in regards to music and Internet mediation. However, from a qualitative viewpoint, a wealth of data was gathered regarding the guiding principles and rules that are in place in each home regarding the media. Overall, parents report being knowledgeable of the media that their child uses and are comfortable with the rules in place and the principles that guide their decisions. The results of the study indicate that parents are aware of how their child/children interact with the media but an element of education for parents and even educators in the schools may be missing. Parents must stay abreast of new technologies and continually monitor ways in which their child/children use that technology. If parents believe that they are helpless against the power the media has over their children they are conceding a loss to the media's influence. However, if parents stay involved in their child's life and stay up-to-date on the newest technologies and what children gain from using this technology, then there is no reason to believe that we are powerless against the media.

A partir de 2010 um fenômeno vem se intensificando no Brasil: a vinda de haitianos. O objetivo desta dissertação é entender o papel das escolhas e práticas de consumo no processo de aculturação dos haitianos no Rio Grande do Sul. O estudo fundamenta-se na abordagem de Cultura do Consumo. A metodologia utilizada para este trabalho foi de natureza interpretativista, um pesquisa qualitativa através de entrevistas em profundidade, observações participantes e análise da mídia popular. Os principais resultados encontrados nesta pesquisa envolvem consumir por consumir, desconhecendo o significado, a possibilidade de negociar e não controlar a adaptação pelo consumo, à cultura do assistencialismo, o desequilíbrio das escolhas e práticas de consumo, a prática comum e próxima e finalmente, a prisão de consumo.
From 2010 a phenomenon has intensified in Brazil: the coming of Haitians. The objective of this dissertation is to understand the role of choices and consumption practices in the acculturation of Haitians in Rio Grande do Sul The case study is based on the approach of Consumer Culture. The methodology used for this study was interpretive nature a qualitative research through in-depth interviews, participant observation and analysis of social media. The main findings of this study involve consuming for consuming, not knowing the meaning, the ability to negotiate and not control the adaptation by consumption, the culture of philanthropy, the imbalance of choices and consumption practices, the common practice and next and finally the prison consumption.

To this end, an online survey was administered to a selected sample of Shanghai’s population. As a result, it was concluded that Portuguese products may have a chance to enter this market, if they are presented in the right places, with the right prices, if it can get to the right people and publications but, especially, if the business relation and country brand are well managed.

Poursuivant un choix politique de relance du pouvoir d'achat et / ou de lutte contre l'inflation, le droit économique a en effet cherché à protéger puis à encadrer la grande distribution. La prohibition du refus de vente, la prohibition de la majoration discriminatoire des prix ainsi que la prohibition des prix minimums imposés avaient ainsi pour objectif de protéger la concurrence de la grande distribution. La fragilisation du commerce indépendant traditionnel apparaît néanmoins comme un effet pervers de cette protection législative. Les pouvoir publics ont alors tenté de protéger cette forme de commerce traditionnel par des barrières à l'entrée légales anticoncurrentielles. En somme, soit les pouvoirs publics protègent la grande distribution au profit de la concurrence mais au détriment du commerce traditionnel, soit ils protègent le commerce traditionnel au détriment de la concurrence. Face à cette alternative il apparaît alors que seule une action législative tournée vers l'intérêt du consommateur -comme acteur de concurrence- permettra une régulation du marché de la distribution au profit tant de la concurrence de la grande distribution que du commerce traditionnel
The French lecturer Jean-Marc MOUSSERON wrote that “law is the tool bringing economic choices into being, these economic choices themselves following fundamental political ones”. It is indeed by pursuing political choices such as the increase of the purchasing power or the reduction of consumer price that economic law protects and controls big retailers' action. By prohibiting the refusal to sell, the price discrimination practice and the minimum prices' resale practice, the French government tried indeed to protect the competition from grocery retailers. However as a consequence of this protection, small independent retailers lost their competitiveness. The French government tried hence to protect them by introducing anticompetitive legal barriers. To sum up, the government either protects the competition of grocery retailers to the detriment of traditional retailers or protects the small traditional retailers to the detriment of the competition. Bearing that alternative in mind, it seems that only a legislative action aiming to protect consumers will bring about a satisfyingly regulated retail market for the benefit of both the competition of grocery retailers and small retailers

O churrasco gaúcho, para muitos, poderia ser caracterizado apenas como “carne assada sobre brasas”. Todavia, diversos achados dão conta de que, na verdade, este prato típico é constituído por diversos outros elementos e símbolos, que o tornam uma atividade repleta de significados especiais. Desta forma, esta dissertação, através da óptica da experiência de consumo, objetiva explorar, de forma qualitativa, os elementos e dimensões que compõem a experiência de consumo do churrasco para os habitantes da cidade de Porto Alegre. Recomendada por diversos autores para ocasiões nas quais estão presentes aspectos experienciais, a Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) é aqui utilizada como inspiração para a confecção dos roteiros utilizados nas entrevistas em profundidade para a coleta de dados. Uma vez que o alimento objeto deste estudo pode ser degustado em uma ampla gama de ambientes e situações, é adotado aqui, tão somente, aquele churrasco consumido em casa ou na casa de amigos e/ou familiares, excluindo, portanto, locais de churrascos em churrascarias, restaurantes e quaisquer estabelecimentos comerciais. Os resultados obtidos apontam as principais características desta experiência de consumo, relativas aos seus contextos, estímulos sensoriais, processos cognitivos, respostas afetivas, atividades e avaliações, além de metáforas que os participantes apresentaram, mesmo que inconscientemente, através das imagens que trouxeram para as entrevistas. Dentre as principais características da experiência, ressaltam-se a importância da presença de amigos, a capacidade de aproximar o consumidor da tradição e cultura gaúchas, e o sentimento de alegria propiciado por ela.
Rio Grande do Sul‟s barbecue, for most, could be characterized just as “meat toasted over cinder”. However, many findings point that, in truth, this typical meal is composed by many other elements and symbols, that make it an activity filled with special meanings. That said, this dissertation, through the experiential consumption optic, intends to explore, in a qualitative approach, the elements and dimensions that compose the barbecue‟s consumption experience for the habitants of the city of Porto Alegre. Recommended by many authors for occasions in which experiential aspects are present, the Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique (ZMET) is here used as an inspiration for the elaboration of the depth-interviews scripts used in the gathering of data. Once the food object for this study can be tasted in many different fashions, only the situations where the barbecue is consumed at home or by friend‟s or family are here adopted, excluding, therefore, barbecue places such as “churrascarias”, restaurants and any other commercial establishments. The obtained results point the main characteristics for this consumption experience, concerning its contexts, sensorial stimuli, cognitive processes, affective answers, activities and evaluation, besides metaphors elucidated by the interviewees, even unconsciously, through the images they brought to the interviews. Among the experience‟s properties, stand out the importance of friends presence, the hability to bring the consumer near to the local tradition and culture, and the sensation of joy propitiated by it.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar os consumidores de carne ovina, buscando elementos de maior identificação do perfil do consumidor e seu nível de informação; dos hábitos de compra e consumo do produto e as opiniões sobre parâmetros de qualidade e conformidade da carne ovina, bem como compreender o contexto do mercado atual da ovinocultura de corte. O estudo foi desenvolvido em duas etapas: 1) Entrevistas com experts da cadeia produtiva da carne ovina incluindo agentes da produção à comercialização e 2) Pesquisa de mercado com consumidores da cidade de Porto Alegre utilizando amostragem aleatória simples. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi composto por um protocolo de entrevista semi-estruturado e um questionário estruturado. Na etapa exploratória foi possível agrupar as respostas em cinco tópicos: caracterização da cadeia produtiva da ovinocultura do Rio Grande do Sul, mercado e comercialização, perfil do consumidor e percepções do produto, marketing e diferenciação e, perspectivas futuras. Os resultados da pesquisa de mercado foram subdivididos em: perfil dos entrevistados, caracterização dos hábitos alimentares, informações a respeito da carne ovina e, associação entre algumas dessas variáveis. Os dados obtidos na etapa exploratória revelaram a opinião dos experts quanto à atual situação da ovinocultura no Estado, além da necessidade de maior coordenação e fluxo de informações entre os agentes desta cadeia produtiva. A pesquisa de mercado revelou a importância dos supermercados e açougues como locais de compra, a baixa freqüência de consumo quando comparada à outras carnes, os preços elevados e o excesso de gordura como principais dificuldades de compra e escolha do produto, além da falta de diferenciação e padronização dos cortes. A aparência e o registro de inspeção foram os atributos mais valorizados pelos consumidores. O gosto característico e o aumento no consumo com o aumento na oferta foram as informações com maior grau de concordância. Já a associação entre variáveis mostrou tendência de aumento no consumo com o aumento da renda e do nível de instrução dos entrevistados. Ficou evidenciado que as ações produtivas precisam estar ajustadas aos hábitos de compra e consumo de carne ovina.
The objective of this study is to characterize the sheepmeat consumers, seeking for elements of greater identification of the consumer’s profile and his information level, his purchase habits and product consumption, the opinions about parameters of quality and sheepmeat conformity, as well as to understand the context of the current market. The study has been developed in two stages: 1) Interviews with experts of the sheepmeat productive chain, including agents from production to marketing and 2) Market research with consumers of Porto Alegre city, using simple random sampling. The instrument of data collect was composed through a semi-structured interview protocol and a structured questionnaire. At the exploratory stage it was possible to group the answers in five topics: characterization of the sheepmeat productive chain of Rio Grande do Sul, market and marketing, consumer’s profile and product perception, marketing and differentiation and, future prospects. The results of the market research were subdivided in: profile of the interviewees, eating habits characterization, information regarding sheepmeat and, association among some of these variables. The data collected in the exploratory stage showed the opinion of the experts concerning the current situation of the sheepmeat in the state, besides the necessity of greater coordination and information flow among the agents of this productive chain. The market research showed the importance of the supermarkets and butchers as purchase places, the low consumption frequency when compared to other meet, high prices and the fat excess as the main difficulties of the product purchase and choice, besides the lack of differentiation and pattern of the cut. The appearance and inspection were the most valued attributes by the consumers. The characteristic taste and the increase in the consumption with the increase in the supply were the information of greater degree of agreement. But the association between variables showed tendency towards the increase in the consumption with the increase of income and towards the instruction level of the interviewees.

As estratégias de relacionamento e comunicação com os consumidores e clientes, com o objetivo de fidelizá-los e satisfazê-los, são cada vez mais relevantes para as empresas, que assim procuram estabelecer com eles uma relação biunívoca de valor. A literatura indicia que a personalização do atendimento e da comunicação podem ajudar à concretização destes objetivos. Ao longo das últimas décadas assistimos ao desenvolvimento das potencialidades da tecnologia aplicada ao Marketing Relacional e ao Customer Relationship Management (CRM). Porém, interessa saber como é que o consumidor recebe a informação que resulta destas apostas: será que o consumidor sente que tem à sua disposição um serviço personalizado? Esta dissertação tem como principal objetivo perceber quão personalizada é a comunicação com o consumidor na grande distribuição em Portugal, nomeadamente nas cadeias de hipermercados Continente, Intermarché, Jumbo e Pingo Doce. Foi estudada a perceção dos consumidores sobre a comunicação que estas marcas lhes dirigem, no âmbito das suas políticas de Marketing Relacional e de CRM. Recorreu-se a um método quali-quantitativo, com recurso a inquéritos online e entrevistas aprofundadas a consumidores destas cadeias de hipermercados. Os resultados apontam para a possibilidade de melhorias na comunicação personalizada das cadeias de hipermercados com os seus consumidores que detêm o cartão de cliente.
The relation and communication strategies applied by companies to gain consumer fidelity and satisfaction, with the purpose of developing relationships that add value to both parts, are becoming more relevant. Personalizing customer support and communication might help to achieve these goals. Over the last decades we have witnessed the development of technology and how it can be applied to Relationship Marketing and Customer Relationship Management (CRM). However, it appears also necessary to understand how consumers perceive such efforts: do they feel that the companies´ communication under CRM programmes is actually personalized to their specificities? The main objective of this dissertation is to understand how personalized is the CRM communication from retail chains, namely Continente, Intermarché, Jumbo and Pingo Doce, to their consumers. The perception of consumers about the communication they receive from these retail chains was analysed. A mix-methods research plan was developed, by using online questionnaires and in-depth interviews to consumers. Our findings point out to the possibility of improving the personalization of the communication of retail chains with their consumers, to reap better results.

This dissertation analyses the relations of pentecostalism with consumer society and what influences experienced by pentecostalism from that dialogue. At first look, through a literature review to understand the movements of modern society, more especifically define the so-called consumer society. We analyse the various theories on consuption and seek to establish the parameters that govern the relationship between religion, market and consumerism. In a second step, we consider the composition of what is currently know as pentecostalisms. We understand what characteristics delimit Pentecostalism from its beginnings, as well as its evolution in the 20th century, and from there, sort your current diversity and the new directions taken by the same. We establish dialogue with the most recent census data to understand the evolution of the religious in brasilian scene. Even then, qualify this ethnographic field research: located the city of São Bernardo do Campo and the district of Riacho Grande, and that is where we will carry out Field research with subjects pentecostal religious origin. Finally, we understand, through questionnaires and interviews, which currently features assume pentecostals, as well as what changes are observed in the same religious practices, fruits dialogue between pentecostalism and the consumer society. We understand that, as a consequence of this relationship, new ways of relating to the sacred are adopted, thus setting what we define as new pentecostal religious subject.
A dissertação analisa as relações do pentecostalismo com a sociedade de consumo e quais as influências sofridas pelo pentecostalismo a partir desse diálogo. Em um primeiro momento procuramos, em pesquisa bibliográfica, compreender as movimentações da sociedade moderna, mais especificamente definimos a chamada sociedade de consumo. Analisamos as diversas teorias sobre o consumo e buscamos estabelecer os parâmetros que regem as relações entre religião, mercado e consumismo. Em um segundo momento, entendemos a composição do que é conhecido atualmente como pentecostalismos, compreendendo quais características delimitam o pentecostalismo desde seus primórdios, e como se deu sua evolução dentro do século 20, para, a partir daí, classificar sua diversidade atual e os novos rumos tomados pelo mesmo. Estabelecemos diálogo com os mais recentes dados censitários para entender a evolução desse campo religioso no cenário brasileiro. Ainda nesse momento, qualificamos o campo etnográfico da pesquisa: localizamos a cidade de São Bernardo do Campo e o distrito do Riacho Grande, onde ocorreu a pesquisa de campo com sujeitos religiosos de origem pentecostal. Finalmente entendemos, por meio de questionários e entrevistas, quais características assumem atualmente os pentecostais e as modificações observadas em suas práticas religiosas, fruto do diálogo entre o pentecostalismo e a sociedade de consumo. Entendemos que, como consequência da relação, novas maneiras de se relacionar com o sagrado são adotadas, configurando o que definimos como novo sujeito religioso pentecostal.

Considerando-se o contexto de gerenciamento energético em grades móveis, neste trabalho foram propostos dois algoritmos de escalonamento (Maximum Regret e Greedy) que, além de minimizar o consumo de energia, visam assegurar o cumprimento dos requisitos de qualidade de serviço das aplicações submetidas pelos usuários. Tais algoritmos foram projetados a partir de soluções heurísticas para o problema de escalonamento ciente de consumo de energia em grades móveis, que foi modelado como um problema de otimização envolvendo variáveis binárias. Por meio de experimentos, que consideraram tanto cenários estáticos quanto dinâmicos, foi demonstrada a viabilidade dos algoritmos de escalonamento propostos em relação à redução do consumo de energia. Em seu pior caso, o algoritmo Maximum Regret foi 12,18% pior que o referencial determinado pela melhor solução do solver Gurobi; já no pior caso do algoritmo Greedy, tal diferença foi de apenas 8,14%
Considering the context of energy management in mobile grids, this work proposes two scheduling algorithms (Maximum Regret and Greedy) that aim not only to reduce the energy consumption of the mobile devices, but also to ensure the QoS (Quality of Service) requirements of the running applications. These algorithms were designed based on heuristics for the energy aware scheduling problem in mobile grids, which was modeled as an optimization problem with integer variables. The performances of the proposed scheduling algorithms were evaluated by an extensive set of experiments, which demonstrated the feasibility of the adopted approach regarding energy consumption minimization. In its worst case, the Maximum Regret algorithm was 12.18% worse than the best solution provided by the Gurobi solver. While in the Greedys worst case the performance difference was just 8.14%

The objective of this research is to understand the consumption of fine earthenware European on the western border of Rio Grande do Sul, from the end of the nineteenth century until the second decade of the twentieth century considering the values approach and meanings that these products had integrated to its materiality. The ceramic products studied did not have only one functional trend and were not empty of meanings. In this dissertation, the ceramic products are regarded as symbols that carry a social definition being able to express the values and identities of fashion. The consumption of fine faience in Uruguaiana in this period includes port movement, trade and smuggling that involves the social imaginary of Brazil's border with Argentina and Uruguay, in addition, the region is experiencing a moment of political, social and economic development. Thereby, we attempted to relate to the study of material culture analysis of documents, photographs and advertisements in local newspapers belonging to the historical period researched. Thus, it was possible to establish a deep interdisciplinary relationship, analyzing the archaeological, ethnological, historical sources and understanding through them, of the habits and the symbolic representations of society in Uruguaiana.
O objetivo desta pesquisa é entender o consumo da faiança fina europeia na fronteira oeste do Rio Grande do Sul, a partir do final do século XIX até a segunda década do século XX considerando a abordagem dos valores e significados que estes produtos carregavam integrados à sua materialidade. Os produtos de cerâmica estudados não possuíam somente uma tendência funcional e não eram vazios de significados. Nesta dissertação, os produtos de cerâmica são entendidos como signos que carregam uma definição social sendo capazes de expressar identidades e valores da moda. O consumo da faiança fina em Uruguaiana neste período inclui-se ao movimento portuário, ao comércio e ao contrabando que envolve o próprio imaginário social da fronteira do Brasil com a Argentina e Uruguai, além disso, a região atravessa um instante de desenvolvimento político, social e econômico. Desse modo, buscou-se relacionar ao estudo da cultura material a análise de documentos, fotografias e anúncios nos jornais locais pertencentes ao período histórico pesquisado. Assim, foi possível estabelecer uma profunda relação interdisciplinar, analisando as fontes arqueológicas, etnológicas, históricas e compreendendo através delas, os hábitos e as representações simbólicas da sociedade em Uruguaiana.

O presente trabalho visa analisar, a partir da perspectiva do uso final de energia, os resultados do indicador de eficiência criado para averiguar o desempenho de equipamentos usados em obras de construção civil de grande porte. Dentro do setor apreciado, optou-se por analisar energeticamente apenas a fase de construção per si em razão desta etapa ser uma fase de intenso consumo energético. O presente trabalho contou com uma compilação de dados baseados no consumo de 26.121 equipamentos em operação, em 84 obras de construção de grande porte. A partir do banco de dados inicial realizou-se a análise dos dados dos equipamentos monitorados via satélite e com informações de eficiência. Por fim, estimou-se, especificamente, a variação da eficiência nos equipamentos em questão. Na busca de resultados, foi possível constatar uma predominância no consumo de óleo diesel quando comparado a outros insumos energéticos. Geradores, guindastes, compressores e caminhões foram os itens que apresentaram maiores índices de eficiência, com 99,0%, 93,5%, 93,2% e 92,3%, respectivamente. Esses resultados mostram que a maior parte destes equipamentos operam próximo ao ótimo do consumo por hora registrado no projeto.
The present work aims to analyze, from the perspective of the end use of energy, the results of the efficiency indicator created in order to investigate the performance of a group of equipment widely used in large construction projects in Brazil. The analyze comprehends only construction period itself due this step is to consider a phase of intense energy consumption. This work included a database related to the fuel consumption of 26,121 equipment during their operation, at 84 work sites in the large construction projects. From the database described, we performed data analysis of satellite equipment monitored and with efficiency information. Finally, it was estimated the variation of efficiency of the equipment in question. The results show a predominance of diesel consumption when compared to other fuels inputs. Considering our methodology, generators, cranes, compressors and trucks were the items that had higher levels of efficiency, with 99.0%, 93.5%, 93.2% and 92.3%, respectively. These results show that most of these devices operate close to the optimal consumption per hour recorded in the project.

Ilha Grande National Park is a grounding of discussions presented in this dissertative work, it is located in the region northwest of the state of Paraná and southwest of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. It is formed for an archipelago with hundred flat islands that associate to swamps regions, floodplains and floods of plains in the Paraná River, making an extension approximately 140 Km, and represents about 40% of area not dammed of this river, being a witness of the natural features of the islands and floodplains existing of Paraná Basin, whose main specific objective of handle is contributing to the regional development, spreading and encouraging the economic use, ecologically sustainable of the local biodiversity and valuing the historicalcultural base of the region. The objective of this dissertation is presenting a discussion of faced reality from of the researches perfomed like of the tourism projections for the Park through the municipalities south matogrossenses that territorialize with itself. Besides, this has like main objective to combine the analysis of the public politcs nature´s conservation through of the implementation of the Conservation Unity and Tourism by economic recovery of the same nature. Noticed that all the municipalities researched have irregular leisure areas and housing near on the bank of the Paraná river and also the planning of the touristic activity is foundationed in politics of economic development especially with great expectations of public organs and the local population. Proposes of this way a reflection about the possibility of a relation more harmonious between the touristics practicals and in your natural resource, like also the maintenance of the locals societies
O Parque Nacional de Ilha Grande é a base das discussões apresentadas neste trabalho dissertativo, ele está localizado na região noroeste do Estado do Paraná e na sudeste do Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. É formado por um arquipélago com centenas ilhas planas que se associam às regiões pantanosas, várzeas e planícies de inundação do rio Paraná, perfazendo uma extensão de aproximadamente 140 Km, e representa cerca de 40% da área não represada deste rio, sendo um testemunho das características naturais das ilhas e várzeas existentes da Bacia do Paraná, cujo principal objetivo especifico de manejo é contribuir para o desenvolvimento regional, difundindo e incentivando o uso econômico, ecologicamente sustentável da biodiversidade local e valorizando a base históricocultural da região. O intuito desta dissertação é apresentar uma discussão da realidade defrontada a partir das pesquisas realizadas, bem como das projeções turísticas para o Parque através dos municípios sul-matogrossenses que se territorializam com o mesmo. As vendas de produtos ao nível da loja são habitualmente modeladas utilizando dados agregados no tempo ou no número de produtos. A agregação permite alisar a série, evitando a interferência de fenómenos como roturas de "stock", frequentes em muitas lojas de grande dimensão. Nesta tese são desenvolvidos modelos de vendas causais a serem utilizados em dados com elevado nível de desagregação e permitindo a análise do comportamento dos diferentes produtos perante roturas, promoções ou alterações de preço. Utiliza-se uma perspectiva descritiva ainda que os modelos possam ser utilizados previsionalmente. Introduz-se o conceito de variável relativizada tanto nos modelos clássicos como nos modelos de atracção. São deduzidas expressões tanto para as elasticidades directas como cruzadas, para cada modelo combinado com cada uma das expressões de relativização. Faz-se uma análise de robustez às expressões verificando-se que além dos modelos de atracção também alguns modelos clássicos conduzem a elasticidades robustas. Os modelos são posteriormente ajustados a dados relativos a uma subfamília com cinco marcas de arroz. Determinam-se e interpretam-se as elasticidades directas e cruzadas do preço nas quotas de mercado. Conclui-se que os modelos clássicos apresentam um maior poder explicativo fornecendo um maior número de parâmetros facilmente interpretáveis como os relacionados com roturas e promoções.
ABSTRACT: Retail product sales are usually modelled using data aggregated over time or by product group. Doing this is necessary in order to reduce bias effects such as stock-outs, very frequent in large stores. The present research develops causal sales models for daily item data, modelling sales price variability, promotions and stock-out substitution. The approach is essentially descriptive, but the developed models can be used for forecasting purposes. The relative marketing variable concept is introduced not only in classical causal models but also in attraction models. Direct and cross elasticity expressions are deduced for every model combined with seven relative variable expressions. These expressions are tested in extreme conditions for robustness. Not only the attraction models are found robust, but same classical models can bring robust elasticity expressions too. The models are then adjusted to any of five products belonging to a rice product group. Direct and cross elasticities are calculated and interpreted. Results from causal classical models and attraction models are compared. Classical models were found to have more descriptive power than attraction models providing several parameters, related with promotions and stock-outs, easier to interpret.

This work researched self-medication among university lecturers in Campina Grande – PB. Its main objectives were to look at the prevalence, main pharmacological groups used without medical guidance, and the occurrence of problems caused by self-medication. It is a cross sectional study developed with one hundred individuals of the Centre of Science and Technology of the State University of Paraiba. A questionnaire including socio-demographical characteristics, habits and aspects related to medication consumption was applied. The main results show a high prevalence of self-medication (78%) among the lecturers, being headache the major cause (41,9%), and, as a consequence, analgesic and antipyretics were the most prevalence group of drug used (64,4%). An interesting information brought about by this research was that 55% of lecturers did not associate the word drug to a bad thing, linking the word drug only to the illicit ones. Although 80% were concerned with the consequences of drug misuse and 70% had already had problems with self-medication, 81% said medication should be used without medical prescription, and 12% would use antibiotic in this condition. Considering that we dealt with a population of reasonable socio- demographical conditions with enough information, it urges the need to implement public health policies involving all the sectors related to medicine as well as the need to raise the consciousness of the citizens towards their responsibility for their own health.
O presente trabalho investigou a ocorrência da automedicação em professores universitários de Campina Grande – PB, sobretudo, no que se refere à prevalência do fenômeno entre os docentes, aos grupos farmacológicos de medicamentos utilizados com maior frequência sem orientação médica e a existência de problemas ocasionados pela automedicação. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com abordagem hipotético-dedutiva. A análise descritiva, baseou-se nos dados coletados através de um questionário, aplicado em 100 professores do Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba. As perguntas envolveram a caracterização sócio-demográfica, os hábitos e práticas medicamentosas dos entrevistados. Os principais resultados da pesquisa mostraram uma alta prevalência de automedicação entre os professores pesquisados, 78,2% dos mesmos se automedicaram e a principal motivação foi a dor de cabeça 41,9% prevalecendo assim, o uso de analgésicos/antipiréticos, 64,4%. Um fato verificado pelos dados coletados apontou que a maioria dos entrevistados, 55,0% não via no medicamento a sua face negativa, associando a palavra droga apenas às substâncias consideradas ilícitas. Outro dado importante foi que, embora houvesse uma grande proporção de professores que se preocupavam com a utilização de medicamentos sem prescrição médica (80,0%) e daqueles que já haviam tido problemas decorrentes de automedicação (70,0%), contraditoriamente, 81,0% deles opinaram que o medicamento deve ser utilizado sem orientação médica e, ainda, 12,0% faziam uso de antibióticos sem prescrição. Considerando que este dados vêm de uma população com um razoável nível sócio-demográfico e com acesso à informação, percebemos ser necessária a implantação de políticas públicas de saúde que envolva todos os setores relacionados a medicamentos e, ainda, que trabalhe com a necessária conscientização dos cidadãos em direção à responsabilidade por sua própria saúde.

This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with drug use by teenage students of high school in the Greater Florianópolis region. In a systematic review (ch. 3), the search for articles was held in the Scopus database, with five-year period of crop (2010-2014), it was considered articles in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The descriptors used were: "adolescents", "teenagers", "alcohol drinking", "smoking", "tobacco", "marijuana smoking" and "cannabis". It appealed to the Boolean operators AND and OR to link the search terms. In the empirical study (Ch. 4), the sampling was done randomly and conglomerates according to the number of students enrolled in public and state schools in each municipality, resulting in 3,550 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years. The instruments used for data collection were the Economic Classification criteria questionnaires in Brazil by the Brazilian Association of Research Companies (ABEP); Questionnaire of the Brazilian Center of Information on Psychotropic Drugs, Federal University of São Paulo (CEBRID) (recommended by the Fourth National Survey on Psychotropic Drug Use among Primary and Middle School Students of Public and Private Education Network in 27 Brazilian capitals); and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ); Apart from issues relating to perceived health of adolescents and drug use by family and friends. For the data analysis, a descriptive measure to check the frequency distribution. The level of significance between proportions was evaluated by chi-square test (x²) for heterogeneity and for linear trend of socio-demographic indicators, health perception and risk behavior co-occurrence with respect to the prevalence of drug use. To evaluate the gross association and adjusted between sociodemographic variables, health perception, physical activity, categories of drugs (alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana), education issues, environmental issues and prevalence of consumption of isolated or simultaneous drug was used to measure prevalence ratio (PR), adopting 95% confidence interval (CI) from the Poisson regression with robust variance equation. The significance level adopted for the study was p ≤ 0.05. In a systematic review, 37 articles were included. Of these, most were published in US and European countries, being largely published in Qualis rating of "A". It was found that drug use by adolescents is the result of the sum of intrapersonal factors (gender, age, pubertal timing, depressive symptoms, impulsivity and problem behavior), interpersonal (drug use by family and best friends, positive perceptions related drug use, inconsistent discipline, unsatisfactory relationship with parents, relationship with peers who approve drug use, etc.) and contextual (physical activity, type of exercise, a negative health perception, advertisements that encourage the use of legal drugs, etc.). In the empirical study, it was found that the socio-demographic issues, health, other risk behaviors, and psychosocial aspects can be significant predictors for initiation of experimental and regular consumption of alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana by adolescents of Florianopolis.
Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar os fatores associados ao consumo de drogas por adolescentes estudantes do Ensino Médio da região da Grande Florianópolis. No estudo de revisão sistemática (cap. 3), a busca de artigos foi realizada na base de dados Scopus, com recorte de período de cinco anos (2010-2014), considerou-se artigos em inglês, espanhol e português. Os descritores utilizados foram: adolescents , teenagers , alcohol drinking , smoking , tobacco , marijuana smoking e cannabis . Recorreu-se aos operadores boolianos AND e OR para relacionar os termos da pesquisa. No estudo empírico (cap. 4), a amostragem foi realizada de forma aleatória e por conglomerados de acordo com o número de alunos matriculados nas escolas públicas e estaduais em cada município, resultando em 3.550 adolescentes de 14 a 18 anos. Os instrumentos utilizados para a coleta de dados foram os questionários de critério de Classificação Econômica do Brasil da Associação Brasileira de Empresas de Pesquisa (ABEP); Questionário do Centro Brasileiro de Informações sobre Drogas Psicotrópicas da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (CEBRID) (recomendado pelo IV Levantamento Nacional sobre o Consumo de drogas Psicotrópicas entre Estudantes do Ensino Fundamental e Médio da Rede Pública e Privada de Ensino nas 27 Capitais Brasileiras); e o Questionário Internacional de Atividades Físicas (IPAQ); além das questões referentes à percepção de saúde dos adolescentes e o consumo de drogas por familiares e amigos. Para a análise dos dados utilizou-se uma medida descritiva para verificar a distribuição de frequências. O nível de significância entre as proporções foi avaliado pelo teste Qui-quadrado (x²) para heterogeneidade e para a tendência linear dos indicadores sociodemográficos, percepção de saúde e coocorrência de comportamento de risco em relação à prevalência de consumo de drogas. Para avaliar a associação bruta e ajustada entre as variáveis sociodemográficas, percepção de saúde, nível de atividade física, tipos de drogas consumidas (álcool, cigarro e maconha), questões de escolaridade, questões ambientais e prevalência de consumo de drogas isolada ou simultânea, foi utilizada a medida de razão de prevalência (RP), adotando 95% de intervalo de confiança (IC) a partir da equação de Regressão de Poisson com variância robusta. O índice de significância adotado para o estudo foi p≤ 0,05. No estudo de revisão sistemática, 37 artigos foram incluídos. Destes, a maioria foi publicada em países norte-americanos e europeus, sendo grande parte publicado em periódicos de classificação Qualis A . Constatou-se que o consumo de drogas pelos adolescentes é resultado da soma dos fatores intrapessoais (sexo, idade, timing puberal, sintomas depressivos, impulsividade e problemas de conduta), interpessoais (uso de drogas por familiares e melhores amigos, percepções positivas relacionadas ao uso de drogas, disciplina inconsistente, relacionamento não satisfatório com os pais, relacionamento com pares que aprovam o uso de drogas, etc.) e contextuais (nível de atividade física, tipo de exercício físico, percepção de saúde negativa, propagandas que estimulam o uso de drogas lícitas, etc.). No estudo empírico, verificou-se que as questões sociodemográficas, de saúde, de outros comportamentos de risco, bem como os aspectos psicossociais podem ser preditores significativos para a iniciação de consumo experimental e regular de álcool, cigarro e maconha pelos adolescentes da grande Florianópolis.

Food consumption is an indirect method of evaluation of the nutritional status and may contributes as a previous indication for nutritional interventions on public health as well as provide support for national policies on food and nutrition. Dietary practices and inadequate food consumption at the age of childhood and adolescence may be related to the great probability of morbidity and mortality by non-transmittable chronicles diseases in the adult age. The aim of this study was to identify the feeding practices and evaluate the dietary consumption by adolescents in the fishing communities of Rio Grande do Norte, in an attempt to verify its nutritional (un)safety, as well knowing the energy intake, analyze possible associations between inappropriate macronutrients with gender and age, estimates the prevalence of inadequate intake of micronutrients and identify feeding practices around the consumption of fish. This is a cross-sectional study with 201 adolescents aged from 10 to 19 years old in fishing communities in the city of Macau RN, 2008. Dietary practices related to fish consumption were identified by structured questionnaire. The food consumption was obtained by 24 hour recall, with the aid of a photographic record of food and utensils. Dietary intake information was adjusted by the interpersonal and intrapersonal variances, according to Iowa State University. To estimates the total energy consumption by the adolescents we ve used the equation of Estimated Energy Requirement (EER). The analysis of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and iron, was provided by the Estimated Average Requirements (EAR); fiber, calcium and sodium analysis by Adequate Intake (AI); the total lipids by the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR); and the content and quality of fats by the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Descriptive statistics and differences between medians were verified by the Kruskal-Wallis test. To detect associations between variables we ve used the prevalence ratio (IC95%), the Mantel-Haenszel (p-value < 0.05) and multiple logistic regressions between selected nutrients and gender and age variables. The age distribution was predominantly masculine (59.2%) in the range from 10 to 13 years old (70.1%). Fry was the most used way of preparation of the fish (76.8% for fish and 46.1% for seafood), with average per capita consumptions of 94g. The higher prevalence of inadequacy was the excessive consumption of lipids (girls: 47.6%; boys: 26,0%; RP=1.95; IC95% from 1.25 to 3.04) and saturated fatty acids (girls: 24.4%; boys: 10.1%; RP=2.42; IC95% from 1.25 to 4.67). The adolescents from age of 14 to 18 years old had 3.05 (IC95% from 1.35 to 6.93) times the probability to consume saturated fatty acids over the recommendations than adolescents from 10 to 13 years old. Most inadequate prevalence for micronutrients with inferior consumption was of phosphorus among feminine gender (80%) and magnesium among masculine gender (98%). Inadequate prevalence of total lipids and high saturated fatty acids in girls and 14-18 years old adolescents may represents a previous indication for the development of non-transmittable chronicles diseases in that population. The exposure to nutritional unsafety present in significant section of macronutrients and micronutrients may provide elements for the control of adequate intake control, and nutritional disturbance and non-transmittable chronic diseases preventions among adolescents of Ponta do Tubarão State Sustainable Development Reserve, Macau, RN (Brazil).
O consumo alimentar é um método indireto de avaliação do estado nutricional e pode contribuir como indicativo precoce para intervenções nutricionais em saúde pública, bem como fornecer subsídios para as políticas nacionais de alimentação e nutrição. As práticas alimentares e o consumo alimentar inadequados, ao atingir crianças e adolescentes, podem relacionar-se com maior probabilidade de morbi-mortalidade por doenças crônicas não transmissíveis quando adultos. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as práticas alimentares e avaliar o consumo dietético entre adolescentes de comunidades pesqueiras do Rio Grande do Norte, na tentativa de verificar a sua (in)segurança nutricional, bem como, conhecer a ingestão energética, analisar possíveis associações entre a inadequação dos macronutrientes com o sexo e a faixa etária, estimar a prevalência de ingestão inadequada de micronutrientes e identificar práticas alimentares em torno do consumo de pescado. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com 201 adolescentes entre 10-19 anos, de comunidades pesqueiras do município de Macau-RN, 2008. As práticas alimentares referentes ao consumo de pescado foram identificadas por um questionário estruturado. O consumo alimentar foi obtido por recordatório de 24 horas, com auxílio de um registro fotográfico de alimentos e utensílios. As informações dietéticas foram ajustadas pela variabilidade intra e interpessoal, conforme a Iowa State University. Para estimar o gasto energético total dos adolescentes, utilizou-se a equação da Estimated Energy Requirement (EER). A análise dos carboidratos, proteínas, vitaminas e os minerais fósforo, magnésio, zinco e ferro, realizou-se pela Estimated Average Requirement (EAR); fibras, cálcio e sódio, pela Adequate Intake (AI); lipídios totais, pelos Acceptable Macronutrient Distribuition Ranges (AMDR) e o teor e qualidade das gorduras, pelas recomendações da Academia Americana de Pediatria. Foram calculadas estatísticas descritivas e as diferenças entre medianas verificadas pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Para detectar associações entre variáveis, utilizou-se a Razão de Prevalência (IC95%), o teste de Mantel-Haenszel (p-valor < 0,05) e regressão logística múltipla entre nutrientes selecionados e as variáveis sexo e faixa etária. A faixa etária predominante foi de 10-13 anos (70,1%) e o sexo foi o masculino (59,2%). O modo de preparo do pescado mais utilizado foi a fritura (peixes: 76,8%; mariscos: 46,1%), com consumo per capita médio de 94g. A maior prevalência de inadequação foi o consumo excessivo de lipídios (meninas: 47,6%; meninos: 26,0%; RP=1,95, IC95%1,25-3,04) e de ácidos graxos saturados (meninas: 24,4%; meninos: 10,1%; RP=2,42, IC95% 1,25-4,67). Os adolescentes de 14-18 anos tiveram 3,05 (IC95% 1,35-6,93) mais chances de consumir ácidos graxos saturados acima da recomendação do que os de 10-13 anos. As maiores prevalências de inadequação para os micronutrientes com consumo inferior foram para o fósforo entre o sexo feminino (80%) e o magnésio entre o sexo masculino (98%). As prevalências de inadequação de lipídios totais e ácidos graxos saturados elevados, nas meninas e nos adolescentes de 14-18 anos, poderão representar indicador precoce para o surgimento de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis nesta população. A exposição à insegurança nutricional presente em parcela significativa dos macronutrientes e dos micronutrientes, poderá fornecer elementos para o controle da ingestão dietética adequada e para a prevenção de distúrbios nutricionais e doenças crônicas não transmissíveis, entre os adolescentes da Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Estadual Ponta do Tubarão, Macau, RN (Brasil).

The objective of this research is to understand the consumption of fine earthenware European on the western border of Rio Grande do Sul, from the end of the nineteenth century until the second decade of the twentieth century considering the values approach and meanings that these products had integrated to its materiality. The ceramic products studied did not have only one functional trend and were not empty of meanings. In this dissertation, the ceramic products are regarded as symbols that carry a social definition being able to express the values and identities of fashion. The consumption of fine faience in Uruguaiana in this period includes port movement, trade and smuggling that involves the social imaginary of Brazil's border with Argentina and Uruguay, in addition, the region is experiencing a moment of political, social and economic development. Thereby, we attempted to relate to the study of material culture analysis of documents, photographs and advertisements in local newspapers belonging to the historical period researched. Thus, it was possible to establish a deep interdisciplinary relationship, analyzing the archaeological, ethnological, historical sources and understanding through them, of the habits and the symbolic representations of society in Uruguaiana.

Introducción: La Organización Panamericana de la Salud en 2014 publicó estrategias para la atención primaria de salud y alimentación saludable, para la prevención de la malnutrición, incluye la restricción de publicidad en alimentos con alto contenido calórico en horario y canales infantiles. La televisión se convirtió en la mejor opción para la promoción de estos alimentos por el fácil acceso que tiene en este colectivo. Objetivo: Evaluar el grado de asociación del consumo de alimentos hipercalóricos, televisión abierta y malnutrición mediante la Teoría del Consumo en escolares de una Escuela Primaria Pública del Municipio de Temamatla, Estado de México. Metodología: Estudio transversal, descriptivo, cuantitativo; muestra estadística estratificada por conglomerados de 140 escolares. Instrumento: "TV y consumo", Alpha de Cronbach de .79; datos procesados por el paquete estadístico IBM SPSS Statistics 20. Resultados: La relación directa entre el consumo de alimentos hipercalóricos y el uso de televisión abierta a través de la asociación de r Pearson, con una asociación entre: .35 y mayor a .05, interpretándose: asociación con linealidad positiva. Conclusiones: La televisión abierta guarda, una asociación positiva con relación al consumo, preferencia y elección de alimentos hipercalóricos, promocionados por medio de campañas publicitarias, basándose en el uso de juegos, sueños, fantasías y personajes de moda para establecer relaciones a largo plazo entre el escolar y la marca, el cual es parte de una felicidad efímera, condicionando estadios perpetuos de malnutrición.

O tema do presente estudo é a reciclagem de resíduos plásticos pós-consumo. Resíduos pósconsumo são resíduos provenientes do descarte de produtos pelos consumidores A sua reciclagem permite a recuperação do seu valor econômico, através do seu reaproveitamento como matéria-prima, e a redução do volume de resíduos a serem dispostos em aterros, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Além disso, esta atividade tende a crescer, uma vez que o consumo do plástico vem aumentando no Brasil, assim como a geração dos resíduos deste tipo de material. O objetivo geral da pesquisa é analisar a reciclagem de resíduos plásticos pós-consumo e a sua transformação em oito empresas do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. O método empregado para atingir o objetivo proposto foi o estudo de casos de empresas recicladoras de resíduos plásticos pós-consumo e empresas transformadoras deste material reciclado. Foram utilizadas também como fontes secundárias informações fornecidas por entidades empresariais com interesse na reciclagem. Os resultados obtidos indicam que as empresas estudadas têm tecnologia de reciclagem fortemente dependente da qualidade (ausência de contaminantes) da sucata plástica e que apresentam deficiências quando comparadas às de outros países. A reciclagem de plásticos pós-consumo é uma oportunidade de negócio, e a utilização do material reciclado como matéria-prima permite a redução de custos nas empresas transformadoras. As maiores barreiras enfrentadas por essas empresas são a qualidade dos resíduos plásticos pós-consumo, a ausência de apoio do governo e de uma tecnologia nacional para a reciclagem do plástico.

Cette étude s'inscrit dans un courant de recherche dont l'objectif est d'expliquer le comportement d'achat du consommateur à l'égard des promotions. Afin de pouvoir apprendre l'ensemble de facteurs qui expliquent ce comportement, un modèle de base du comportement du consommateur, fondé sur le modèle de la boite noire, est adopté. Dans une première étape, il s'agit de fixer le cadre retenu pour la promotion des ventes (le stimulus à analyser), au sein du processus de communication. Ensuite, les différents cadres conceptuels, qui expliquent l'influence des promotions sur le comportement du consommateur, sont présentés en fonction de la nature des variables explicatives privilégiées : nature micro-analytique, psychographique ou environnementale. De plus, l'activité promotionnelle des entreprises de distribution et de production vers le consommateur final est caractérisée en tenant compte de l'évolution de la distribution portugaise et de la situation socio-économique vécue au Portugal. C'est proposer un modèle de comportement d'achat en promotion du consommateur portugais segmenté par stratégies d'achat : (1) le segment de consommateurs qui achète sa marque habituelle et n'est pas actif à l'achat, (2) le segment de consommateurs qui achète sa marque habituelle et qui est actif à l'achat, (3) le segment de consommateurs qui change de marque et qui n'est pas actif lors de l'achat et (4) le segment de consommateurs qui change de marque et qui est actif lors de l'achat. La vérification de ce modèle a été effectuée à partir des données obtenues de l'enquête réalisée auprès des consommateurs en grande surface dans la région du porto. À l'aide de la modélisation logit, l'influence des différentes variables du modèle a été vérifiée et nous avons conclu que la perception promotionnelle est celle qui plutôt prédit l'achat en promotion.

O objetivo principal desta tese é analisar a consolidação do festival de música Rock in Rio como um potente instrumento de comunicação. Nosso percurso teórico tem como ponto de partida a investigação da origem dos grandes eventos e sua relação com o gênio do lugar onde surgiram. Abordamos o processo de festivalização das cidades/da cultura, não só como bálsamo para problemas que afligem o contemporâneo, como desemprego e desindustrialização, mas como rituais públicos que celebram uma comunidade idealizada. No âmago desta tese estão questões relativas à produção de tempo e de espaço possibilitadas pelos grandes eventos, como pilares de um capitalismo que se amasiou com a cultura. A fim de analisar o Rock in Rio, verificamos a sua trajetória e seus desdobramentos em múltiplas plataformas. Em um momento no qual velhas mídias precisam se reinventar para conviver com novas possibilidades de comunicação, o empresário Roberto Medina incorporou-as de maneira hábil e rápida a serviço da marca. Nas arenas do festival a economia da experiência tornou-se palavra de ordem, configurando-o como um lugar para emoção, onde artistas e empresas disputam a atenção do público, em um tempo e espaço dramatizados por especialistas em sedução e consumo. Valendo-nos do desafiador e tortuoso caminho de pesquisa proposto pela arqueologia da mídia, especialmente para um produto multifacetado como o Rock in Rio, tanto a pesquisa teórica quanto a empírica dão conta de que na comunicação, considerando o consumo também como um modo de dizer, estão o sopro de vida e também a razão de ser dos grandes eventos. O Rock in Rio é, assim, sinalizado como uma grande mídia ao vivo, que tem na presença e na visibilidade o dogma de sua vitalidade.
The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the consolidation of Rock in Rio music festival as a powerful communication tool. Our theoretical course takes as its starting point the investigation of the origins of major events and their relation to the place where they came from. We addressed the process of cities/culture festivalization, not only as a balm to problems afflicting the contemporary, such as unemployment and de-industrialization , but also as public rituals celebrating an idealized community. At the core of this thesis are issues concerning the production of time and space made possible by major events as the pillars of a capitalism that merged with culture. In order to analyze the Rock in Rio, we approach its trajectory and its consequences on multiple platforms. In a time when old media need to reinvent themselves to live with new possibilities for communication, businessman Roberto Medina incorporated them skillfully and quickly in service of the brand. In the arenas of the festival, experience economy has become a slogan, setting it up as a place for emotion, where artists and companies compete for public attention, in a time and a space dramatized by experts in seduction and consumption. Based on the challenging and tortuous path of research proposed by media archaeology, especially for an all-purpose product such as Rock in Rio, both the theoretical research as the empirical one enabled us to realize that communication, considering consumption also as a kind of speech,lies the lease of life and also the reason for the big events. Rock in Rio is thus tagged as a great live medium, which has the presence and visibility in the dogma of its vitality.

The empirical research was to analyze the taste, style, patterns of sociability and sociological profile of groups of individuals who participate in fraternities the taste of fine wine in Porto Alegre and Tilings. It was done mainly through interviews and participant observation in two brotherhoods of tasters and harmonized on dinner in a restaurant company that sells wine. Examined the sharing of knowledge, taste and style between the panelists and their habits of eating together. Examined the role of fraternities prescritora wine, setting habitus through the exercise of the senses, collective consumption practices, rules of etiquette and reciprocity among members of fraternities, as well as the acquisition and expression of distinctive signs associated with ene-consumption and wine tourism.
A pesquisa empírica procurou analisar o gosto, o estilo, os padrões de sociabilidade e o perfil sociológico dos grupos de indivíduos que participam de confrarias de degustadores de vinhos finos em Porto Alegre e Lajeado. Ela foi realizada, sobretudo, por meio de entrevistas e observação participante em duas confrarias de degustadores e em jantares harmonizados no restaurante de uma empresa que comercializa vinhos. Analisou o compartilhamento de conhecimentos, gostos e estilos entre os degustadores e seus hábitos de comensalidade. Examinou a função de prescritora enológica das confrarias, a configuração de habitus através do exercício dos sentidos, de práticas de consumo coletivo, de regras de etiqueta e de reciprocidade entre os membros das confrarias, assim como a aquisição e manifestação de sinais distintivos associados ao enoconsumo e ao enoturismo.

E ste trabalho analisa como o governo do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul realizou políticas fiscais em relação ao setor de carnes a partir de 1980 até a atualidade, buscando registrar os seus resultados. Inicialmente, faz-se uma revisão da literatura para situar este trabalho dentro do contexto literário. Em seguida, analisa-se teoricamente o imposto sobre o consumo, verificando seus efeitos macroeconômicos e microeconômicos, considerando ser este o instrumento utilizado na realização das suas políticas. Depois, descreve-se o desempenho do setor de carnes relacionando-o ao tratamento tributário a ele dado através do ICM/ICMS.
