Abstract:
The aim of this paper is first to describe the current achievements regarding digitalization technologies in the engineering and construction sector. The concrete technologies presented are the GIS standards as CityGLM and BIM technologies, and as the EUBIMTG initiative. These two technologies can be applied in a common framework building digital twin environments and platforms. These platforms create a huge capacity of gains for the constructions sector in all phases, and for all the actors, as constructions digitalization has a huge unexplored potential. Most of the participants in the value chain will gain from interventions in the engineering and construction (E&C) phases of design, and engineering, construction and operations. Project management (PM) was described as intervention, which creates potential for new business models to be implemented. Virtual modelling can further develop in the direction of virtualization and construction simulation, and contribute towards the successful digitalization of the E&C sector.

Bowron, John. "Re-engineering the project procurement process through concurrent engineering." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2002. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6811.

Abstract:
The construction industry in the United Kingdom is a multi-billion pound business that contributes, on average 10% of the UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, it is seen by many to be underachieving in terms of service delivery and investment opportunities. Projects are frequently late and over budget much to the disappointment of those involved in the industry and especially clients. Many investigations have been commissioned and resulting reports have suggested improvements in the way the industry is organised. Procurement of construction projects in the main are undertaken using methods that support fragmentation and adversarial relationships. However, with the introduction of partnering and prime contracting some improvements have been made. Procurement of a construction project begins with the strategies developed during briefing and is only complete when the facility is handed over to the client, some contract strategies allow for the facility to be completed once it is in operation, has been maintained and eventually is demolished. Costings and programmes are then related to life-cycle issues and aspects such as maintenance have to be taken into account during the facility development stages. The adoption of Concurrent Engineering (CE) is seen to offer the construction industry a way forward. Having been adopted extensively by manufacturing in its product development stages a similar adoption by the construction industry would go some way to achieving the 30% improvement in real terms suggested by Latham [1994] and Egan [1998]. The research described in the thesis aims to develop a new procurement method for the delivery of construction projects. The approach adopted was to identify current methods of procurement and the problems associated with each method. Then using Concurrent Engineering as a basis, a new procurement model was developed that offered potential improvements in the construction process between the stages of Clients Briefing and Detailed Design. The resulting model was evaluated through the application of CE principles into the process and by the presentation and discussion of the method with a number of industry participants, followed by the completion and assessment of a questionnaire. The model was shown to fulfil the principles of CE and could be adopted into construction. It offers a new approach to procurement which in turn would save costs and time and potentially improve the quality of the final construction product.

Majani, Ruby. "Gut construction : scaffolds for intestinal tissue engineering." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2009. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/29319/.

Full text
Abstract:
Forming tissues in the laboratory to replace diseased or dysfunctional tissue or act as models for drug treatment is the goal of tissue engineering. The large intestine epithelium (colon surface) is a tissue which could benefit from both diseased and non-diseased models for the purpose of tackling colon cancer causes and treatments. Scaffolds (cell supports) are a pivotal part in many tissue engineering strategies. This thesis describes the design and production of two separate scaffolds based on the degradable polymer poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). The first was a two dimensional scaffold to mimic the intestinal basement membrane which was modified with an oxygen plasma. The changes to the surface due to plasma and the degradation properties of the scaffold were extensively studied with SEM, XPS, AFM and GPC. The data showed that the oxygen plasma induced surface porosity and associated changes to surface roughness. The surface chemistry as detected by XPS was unchanged by both plasma treatment and degradation in buffered solution. The plasma treatment did lead to a dramatic loss in molecular weight but the degradation profile of both the untreated and etched films was similar. Extensive cell studies with SEM, live/dead, alamarBlue and Hoechst DNA assays showed that intestinal cells on the plasma treated scaffold was enhanced in terms of morphology, metabolic activity and proliferation. Finally, a two dimensional co-culture model using epithelial and myofibroblasts cell lines on the modified PLGA scaffold was achieved. The second scaffold was a three dimensional scaffold bearing the crypt like architecture of the colon. An accurate mould produced through electron beam lithography using dimensions measured from mouse histological sections. PLGA particles were used to fill the mould and sintered to produce the scaffold. A unique cell seeding approach using cell sheets was used. The cell sheets were produced on plasma polymers of acrylic acid and the discharge power was shown to affect surface wettability, chemistry and cell viability. The cell sheet approach proved to enhance cell attachment to the scaffold compared to individual cell seeding. Finally, a bilayer scaffold with model protein to mimic Wnt protein presence in the lower half of the crypt was studied with ToF-SIMS.

Abstract:
The paper proposes a software application designed to design the product pants for people with lower limb amputations, for women and men, worn during rehabilitation or social integration. The application can be used both by small and medium-sized enterprises and as a teaching tool for the master's course "Functional and ergonomic design in textiles". The application has a structure with open architecture that allows completing, modifying it according to needs but also automating engineering activity. For the realization of the basic pattern, the data related to the carrier and the product are considered as initial data. The model construction is elaborated by taking into account the product sketch created by the designer which provides information about the types of changes, the location of the product, the contour of the constructive-decorative elements, etc. For the construction of the model, a library was created with functional-constructive elements, depending on the level of amputation of people and their needs. By selecting the necessary constructive-functional elements and combining with the basic construction, we obtain the model constructions of the trousers products for women and men, which have lower limb amputations. The application is designed to allow the subsequent completion of the database with various products for people with locomotor disabilities and the completion of the graphic library with functional-constructive and decorative elements, depending on the type of disability, doctors' recommendations and wishes. The examples presented can be used both to facilitate the work of builders in enterprises and workshops, and in educational institutions. All patterns can be easily changed as needed.

Abstract:
Abstract. Owing to the recurrent modifications in the lifestyle and demands of humans the regular life of buildings is decreasing whereas the demolition or renovation of the buildings increases. Building materials and their components ingest just about 40 percent of world-wide vigour per annum in their life segments such as fabrication and procurement of building materials, construction and demolition. The development of the construction industry completely relies on the deployable resources. To abate the consumption of construction materials in current years, the construction industry has established an environmental track, which wishes to use naturally available materials. Reviving such technology, further developing this technology green building materials are paramount for constructing green buildings. Such a green-building constructional model does not require energy contributions frequently for production. The advantage of reducing the energy used in manufacturing, increases strength. Green Building material is one which utilizes less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste, produces less carbon dioxide emissions and provides improved space for inhabitants as compared to conventional buildings. It includes environmental, economic, and social benefits as well. This paper aims to provide knowledge about some of the green building materials that help for sustainable living. These elucidations can obligate a significant influence in contemporary construction owed to the escalation in the charges of traditional construction materials.

Baader, Franz, Carsten Lutz, Eldar Karabaev, and Manfred Theißen. A New n-ary Existential Quantifier in Description Logics. Technische Universität Dresden, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.25368/2022.151.

Full text
Abstract:
Motivated by a chemical process engineering application, we introduce a new concept constructor in Description Logics (DLs), an n-ary variant of the existential restriction constructor, which generalizes both the usual existential restrictions and so-called qualified number restrictions. We show that the new constructor can be expressed in ALCQ, the extension of the basic DL ALC by qualified number restrictions. However, this representation results in an exponential blow-up. By giving direct algorithms for ALC extended with the new constructor, we can show that the complexity of reasoning in this new DL is actually not harder than the one of reasoning in ALCQ. Moreover, in our chemical process engineering application, a restricted DL that provides only the new constructor together with conjunction, and satisfies an additional restriction on the occurrence of roles names, is sufficient. For this DL, the subsumption problem is polynomial.

Abstract:
This report is an updated version of the original engineering design guide published in 1995 by the Pipeline Research Committee (PRC) of the American Gas Association. As with the original document, it is intended to serve as a step by step guide for engineers engaged in the evaluation, design, and management of natural gas pipeline construction by horizontal directional drilling (HDD). Topics covered include a description of the HDD process, technical feasibility and cost considerations, surface and subsurface site investigations, drilled path design, steel pipe installation and operating stress analysis, environmental impact, construction contracts, and construction monitoring. The design guide includes two Microsoft Excel workbooks for use in analyzing HDD installation loads and stresses on steel pipe.
