Kappia, Joseph Gaiva. "Career dynamics within the construction industry : a trade and craft perspective." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2006. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14090.

Full text
Abstract:
Recruiting and retaining an adequate share of the UK workforce is vital to meeting the construction industry's demands and sustaining its current growth. This requires the industry to attract new employees, adopt a proactive approach to Human Resource Development (HRD) and the formulation of effective retention strategies. Career development programmes are required which can align the industry's needs with the career expectations of the individual employee. However, despite the importance of such schemes to the trade and craft occupations, most research devoted to career development has a professional and managerial focus. A need to redress this imbalance has been compounded by a variety of factors such as the scarcity of skilled people, falling recruitment levels and high employee turnover rates. The overall aim of the work reported in this thesis is to develop an understanding of trade and craft career dynamics. The information can be used as a framework for supporting specific career management and career development initiatives, which in turn will serve to actively encourage skill development, attract new employees and retain the services of the current workforce. Drawing on the conceptual languages of extant "Careers" and "Human Resource Management" theory, the research adopted an ethnographic research approach. An iterative multiphase research design framework was utilised, involving a combination of research paradigms. These quantitative and qualitative methods included: a questionnaire of 563 informants; discussions with 54 groups of trainees; and 88 indepth interviews with both New Entrant Trainees (NETs) and Qualified and Experienced (QE) construction workers. By encouraging systematic narrative accounts of the attitudes, behaviours and idea systems of the actors involved a better understanding of the nature of trade and craft employment was developed. Combining and comparing the fmdings of both datasets (NETs and QEs) and relating this to the outlined theoretical perspectives sheds new light on the career dynamics within the industry. The resear_c~-. found that although employees are not comprehensive in their information and search of career options; they do place a high priority on career development. However, career development is limited due to the realities (opportunities and operational conditions) of the industry; which influence attitudes of individuals and their peers. Employees often further encounter a series of career decision errors which affect the employment relationship. The fmdings suggest that good career development practice is capable of helping to attract, recruit and retain a sustainable share of the UK workforce. As such, the fmdings provide a platform from which effective employment strategies can be developed in the future.

Awe, Ezekiel Mofoluwaso. "A framework for training and development of construction craft skills in Nigeria." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2012. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/19297/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Nigerian construction sector presently accounts for about 1.4% of the nation's GDP, even though its contribution to total GDP seems to have remained, extremely low; the sector is yet to realise its full potential. The sector is expanding strongly with a growth of 10% per year and is supported by multiple real estate projects and by the modernisation and development of infrastructures which offer new opportunities for the construction sector. The nation's approach to the training and development of construction related craftspeople, however, has been general rather than specific; and the various reforms on technical, vocational education and training (TVET) have not succeeded in tackling the perennial craft skills shortage crisis in the sector. This research project focused on formulating and validating a framework for achieving effectiveness and sustainability in the training and development of construction craft in the Nigerian construction sector, with emphasis on addressing the factors militating against securing and sustaining the interest of the youth population in acquiring construction related crafts skills. In order to collect a robust data to adequately address the goal of the study, secondary data were collected through an in-depth review of related literature. Quantitative data were elicited through a questionnaire survey while the gathering of qualitative data adopted the semistructured interview and document analysis approaches. This mixed-method approach generated data that formed the basis for the development of a unique and novel best practice framework for the training and development of construction related crafts people in the Nigerian construction industry. The framework, which was validated by experienced industry-based professionals and academics; was adjudged capable of ensuring effectiveness and enhancing sustainability in craft skills training and development in the nation's construction sector. The study concluded that in order to achieve sustainability and effectiveness, crafts skills training and development in the nation's construction sector must be accorded a specific attention. The establishment of a regulatory organ vested with the responsibilities for implementing and regulating skills training and development in the construction sector is imperative. Apart from facilitating career progression of crafts people and adequately addressing the factors inhibiting the interest of prospective trainees; effective guidance and counselling systems must be provided for the purpose of sensitizing the youths and other potential trainees on the importance and economic prospects inherent in pursuing construction related craft careers. The Construction Craft Skills Training and Development (CCSTD) Framework is a major contribution to knowledge in this area. It is recommended for adoption by the government, construction sector, professional bodies, training providers and other related stakeholders; as a guide on skills training and development matters in the Nigerian construction sector.

Wang, Yinggang. "A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF TRAINING OUTCOMES AND STRATEGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY." UKnowledge, 2008. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/600.

Full text
Abstract:
The shortage of skilled workers is one of the greatest challenges facing the construction industry. The Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) surveyed facility owners on their workforce availability in the summer of 2001 and found that 82 percent of the respondents reported experiencing work force shortages on their projects, and 78 percent indicated that the trend had worsened over the previous three years. One promising solution to relieve the shortage of skilled workers is to provide adequate and effective training. Many research efforts on construction worker training have been conducted in the past decade in order to address the need and benefits of construction craft training. However, a quantitative analysis of construction craft trainings benefits and costs from the perspective of worker, project and company has rarely been carried out. Providing quantifiable analysis regarding the benefits and costs of training can help to solve the debate existing in the industry regarding the value of craft labor training and improve the effectiveness of craft training programs. The research investigated existing major datasets relevant with construction craft training developed by previous research. Meanwhile, as part of this research, a craft director training survey was administrated to measure training benefits in productivity, turnover, absenteeism safety and rework, as well as information such as core training subjects and common barriers for training. The primary objective of the study is to qualify the outcomes and effectiveness of strategies for construction craft training. Four secondary objectives are completed to help achieve the primary goal: (I) Identify the major characteristics of construction training and major factors affecting construction training; (II) Quantitatively measure the outcomes of construction training on the individual and project/company level; (III) Develop benefit-cost ratio models based on the survey administrated by the study as well as existing industry data; and (IV) Perform a skill affinity analysis to identify real multiskilling patterns among craft workers in order to adopt multiskilling training strategies in the construction industry.

Karimi, Hossein. "QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF CRAFT LABOR AVAILABILITY ON CONSTRUCTION PROJECT PERFORMANCE." UKnowledge, 2017. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/ce_etds/56.

Full text
Abstract:
A shortage of skilled craft labor in the North American construction industry has been an unfortunate cyclic trend since the late 1980s. This shortage has been reported and discussed frequently by numerous past studies in the context of construction industry. The 2008 U.S. recession was at least one period when the craft shortage temporarily improved, as witnessed by spikes in construction unemployment rates above 20% due to the work slowdowns. However, the current economic recovery period is once again experiencing craft shortages in some sectors of the U.S. construction industry. Although the past literature provides wealth of information about influence of craft labor shortage on construction project, less attention has been given to quantifying the impact of craft labor availability on construction project performance. The primary contribution of this study to the body of knowledge is to fill the gap in existing literature by quantitatively modelling and elucidating the influence of craft labor availability on construction project performance as measured by safety, schedule, productivity and cost. Data from 97 construction projects completed in the U.S. and Canada between 2001 and 2014 were collected from two data sources. A number of t-tests and regression analyses were conducted in both databases to examine the significance of the influence of craft labor shortage on construction project performance. The primary analysis shows that projects that experienced craft shortages underwent significant higher growth in cost overrun, time overrun, safety incident and also lower productivity compared to projects that did not. Further analysis on two databases returned the following models: 1) a Poisson regression model that demonstrates a positive exponential relationship between increased craft worker recruiting difficulty and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Total Number of Recordable Incident Cases per 200,000 Actual Direct Work Hours (TRIR) on construction projects. 2) a statistically significant correlation between increased craft recruiting difficulty and lower project productivity and higher schedule overruns 3) a multiple regression models that demonstrate a relationship between increased construction cost overrun with two variables of increased actual cost and increased craft staffing difficulty. These models are intended to be used by project management team to perceive the risk that skilled craft labor variability poses on project safety, productivity, time, and cost performance. In addition, understanding the level of impact that craft shortages are having through robust statistical analyses is a first step in developing the motivation for industry leaders, communities, and construction stakeholders to address this challenge.

Abstract:
In today’s society, more of the population is finding itself with multiple points of reference to what they consider as home. Anyone who finds they have more than one place that they feel tied to for one reason or another, considers the impact of these places on their identity. The scale of experience with the places where we live, visit and grow up influences the scale of impact upon our identity. Even a vacation or a visit to a certain place influences us, and thus also changes the place because we interact with it. I am showing, through sculptural and creative media, the layering effect of locational identity and the journeys we make to physically and conceptually link those identities.

Riffell, Zachary D. "Time on Task across Skill Sets in Construction Trades Classrooms: Preparation of Skilled Craft Workers." Scholar Commons, 2019. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7909.

Full text
Abstract:
The construction industry is an essential component of the U.S. economy, yet even amid good wages, construction companies are having trouble finding enough individuals who are ready for work in the industry, and they fear they will not be able to do so in the future because training options for potential workers are inadequate. Better training options are needed. Much research has pointed to soft and academic skills as necessary skills for successful workers that are missing from worker preparation programs, but little has been done to establish an actual correlation between these skills and workforce readiness. In this study, the underlying premise was that students who spend more time on learning tasks are more engaged and will be more likely to be successful in school. As such, time on task (TOT) was defined as the time construction students spent in school preparing for competition at SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC). TOT was measured for three skill sets: academic, soft, and hard skills. The results were correlated with student success at NLSC to determine if related preparation led to increased success in the competition (the proxy for workforce readiness in this study). The results across skills sets showed that competitors at this high level of competition spent a high percentage of their TOT integrating the skill sets. In addition, multiple hierarchical regression analyses were performed with the TOT in the three subscales and competition placement. Overall, related results suggested some limited correlation between skill set integration and final placement at NLSC. In this regard, it is possible that the homogeneity of the population likely limits the generalizability of results.

Gerth, Robert. "The Role of Production Topology in Information Based Structuring of Organizations : The design of craft-based and industrialized construction firms." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Produktionssystem, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-133918.

Full text
Abstract:
Industrialization of construction is a business strategy to significantly improve competitiveness. However, the organization structure of the construction firms needs to support the new production system. The knowledge on why and how this business development can be accomplished is scarce, both within academia and in business practice. This research seeks to fill this knowledge gap. The purpose of organization structure and the production system have is to coordinate the firm’s processes and control the work performing resources. Information is one of the most fundamental dimensions for steering and controlling the work. The different information types are determined by the firm’s product customization strategy and the production system flexibility. Further, diverse information types are managed in different extent by the organizational steering mechanisms. Consequently, firms with dissimilar customization strategy or production flexibility should organizationally be designed differently in order to be efficient. The developed model identifies four generic production topologies: “engineer-to-order” (ETO), “manufacture-to-order” (MTO), “assembly-to-order” (ATO), and “make-standard-products” (MSP). The differences between the topologies can be related to the location of the “customer-order-decoupling-point” (CODP) in the product realization process; and to what extent the upstream and downstream processes continuously use stored information or process information to accomplish the work of each product order. The model predicts which organization structure mechanisms that should be used for which processes for each production topology. It is the specific configuration of the mechanisms that gives each production topology their organizational capability. The model has been validated by case studies in four organizations, each representing one of the four generic production topologies. Three cases considered housing and one studied truck manufacturing. It has been shown that the conventional housing firms have an ETO-production topology, while industrialized housing firms belonging to one of the others, i.e. MTO, ATO or MSP. The reason is that ETO-firms rely on crafts-based production to manage the work, while the other topologies base their steering mechanisms on industrial principles. These two types of production are fundamentally different, which also explain the need for different organization structures. The research complements previous knowledge and significantly increases the ability to predict, analyze and explain an organization’s design and behavior. The model can be used in practice to guide business development work and performance improvement programs.

Troli, Margareth. "Creative approaches in digital craft through the application of waterjet : the development of marquetry, construction and design in studio glass." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2011. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/6499/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is concerned with the engagement of waterjet cutting (a CAD/CAM technology mainly used in industrial production) from the perspective of a designer-maker. The research focus is on practical investigations in the field of ʻStudio Glassʼ a sub-branch of ʻStudio Craftʼ. Novel technical approaches of interlocking, construction, fusing and casting were developed through investigation and engagement with waterjet cutting, glass and a range materials to aid in the making of glass artifacts. Methods for creating ‘Marquetry’ in glass by interlocking shapes and reliefpatternmaking are made explicit through tests and artworks. Flexible materials, heat-resistant materials and porous materials were cut to aid in mould production for glass. The testing of interlocking by offset and topographic layering established potential routes for developing artworks. This research project has developed new technical and creative approaches for ‘Studio Glass’ through combining waterjet cutting with kiln-forming techniques. This project was achieved through practice-led research based on a ‘multi-method’ approach, by lending approaches from identified methodologies such as Bicoleur and Adopted Naturalistic Inquiry. Collaboration and facilitating projects proved that the research also have a wider application potential. The research journey shows evidence of how access to a digital fabrication technology has influenced and inspired the development of a new visual language for the researcher. It is also evident that strategies for developing ideas, as well as working-methods have changed as a consequence of employing CAD/CAM. Ideas inspired from the use of technology changed throughout the research. Initially works were based on testing, but were later were inspired by findings and as the waterjet became second nature to the researcher.

Eppard, William M. "Integrated aerodynamic-structural design optimization." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/90966.

Full text
Abstract:
The introduction of composite materials in aircraft structures is having a profound effect on the design process. These materials permit the designer to tailor material properties to improve structural and aerodynamic performance. In order to obtain maximum benefits, a more integrated multidisciplinary design process is required. Furthermore, because of the complexity of the combined aerodynamic/structural design process numerical optimization methods are required. The present research is focused on a major difficulty associated with the multidisciplinary design optimization process - its enormous computational cost. We consider two approaches for reducing this computational burden: (i) development of efficient methods for cross-sensitivity calculation using perturbation methods; and (ii) the use of approximate numerical optimization procedures. Our efforts are concentrated upon combined aerodynamic-structural optimization. Results are presented for the integrated design of a sailplane wing. The impact of our computational procedures on the computational costs of integrated designs are discussed.

McBride, William M. "The effect of wing wall geometry and well deck configuration on the stability characteristics of amphibious landing ship dock (LSD) class ships." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/101234.

Full text
Abstract:
Amphibious ships, configured with floodable well decks, present a unique challenge to the Ship Design Team to incorporate maximum troop, cargo and vehicle capacity, along with sufficient well deck size, to facilitate efficient operation of LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion) and other amphibious assault craft in support of power projection operations. Analysis of the various LSD 49 Class alternative designs, revealed significant variance in the stability limits for each design. These variations appeared to be directly attributable to wing wall size, as well as to the geometry of the well deck. In order to better understand the effect of these items, and to develop guidelines for future design efforts, this study concentrated on evaluating the stability limitations for various combinations of beam, well deck configuration, and wing wall size using an LSD 49 Class proposed hull form. The results indicated that the most significant parameter affecting the stability of the LSD 49 Class is the height of the well deck above the baseline. The higher the well deck, the smaller the loss of waterplane inertia caused by the entrance of flooding water into the well deck compartment. For lower well decks, the loss of waterplane inertia is more critical at smaller values of beam, but becomes less critical at the upper values of beam considered. In these cases, off-center wing wall flooding becomes more critical, and it is more advantageous to devote larger percentages of beam to the well deck compartment.

Abstract:
This work is an investigation of how to redefine the perception of decoration. Decorative elements are reinvented as fundamental tools for creating garments and form in a collection of nine outfits. To show the width of what embellishment is able to create, the decorative techniques of all garments are different. The work also deals with the question of taste when it comes to embellishment. By using decorations seen as tasteless the work revaluates notions of good and bad taste. Materials as sport fabric combined with embellishment trick the eye and all small decorations together form new materials. New ways to use embellishments are explored, and the time consuming techniques are reminiscent of haute couture techniques, but in the designer’s own way.

Full text
Abstract:
This research confronts the concerns surrounding the professionalisation of psychiatric and mental health nurses. It takes place in a financed context through its implementation as a CIFRE programme (research and training agreement). As its sponsor, the mental health care facility of the Lille Metropolitan area has set up a plan called “professionalisation and tutoring” in order to complete nurses’ initial training, judged insufficient since the psychiatric nurses’ degree and its associated training were shut down in 1992. The plan’s significance is analysed through three levels and from a comprehensive approach. The first level regards its situation in the historical and cultural evolution of the professional group. The second, that which concerns the plan’s actors getting involved to make it work. The final level refers to the neo-nurses appropriation of the educative work instituted by the plan. It is shown that the plan expresses an intention of (re)professionalising the social group by establishing a relation between work and training. This third level is used as an analytical line allowing the study of how, in neo-nurses’ experience, the relationship with the craft is built. The theme of violence in psychiatry is also examined through the relation between work and training to study how it is taken into account in the nurses’ practices. Finally, the typicality of this research, financed by a sponsor’s funds, implies that it has to deal with a system of expectations composed of different levels. Here, the researcher is made to consider its involvement and give an interventionist dimension by training some actors of the field

Abstract:
This research concerns the techniques of tile and brick-making in Roman time in the provinces ofGaul and Germania. We have only access to these techniques through archaeology. First, there arethe movable vestiges: the objects (tiles and bricks), then there are the real estate vestiges: the tilemakingsites which are regularly uncovered. Only the structures of production are examined here, but it is often made reference to materials. The study is led according to two guidelines. One is horizontal: the “chaîne opératoire”, the other is vertical: Time, from present to past. The structures of production are treated according to the orderof the making process: quarrying, preparing clay, shaping, drying, and firing. Inside each of thesefive phases are successively studied structures of contemporary time (craft production), modern, medieval and finally Gallo-Roman. This regressive approach allows us to bring to light thecontinuities and the breaks in the techniques used and thus, to better characterize and understandthe most ancient of them, the Gallo-Roman tile-makers one. The functioning of the most recentstructures of production sheds light on that of the Roman ones. Punctual comparisons are only usedto try and explain some original characteristics of the Gallo-Roman structures. The most innovativeresults were obtained in the study of the structures used in the phases of shaping, drying and firing

Abstract:
Apprenticeship and training in UK construction crafts have declined dramatically over the past 35 years, and much learning now takes place informally, on the job. This is the background to the aim of this research, to explore the nature of skill and identity in the building trades. 49 semi-structured interviews were carried out with informants having worked on construction sites in England over the period since the Second World War. A narrative analysis produced 'life histories' of learning and practicing a trade. The interviews were also analysed in terms of changing understandings of skill and identity, comparing data from contemporary sites in the southeast with a historical case study of the Manchester Direct Works Department in 1979-1982. Critical Discourse Analysis identified site discourses used to construct indentities and compared these with discourses from policy documents since 1950.

Abstract:
Textile waste, both pre and post consumer, is a problem that needs a solution, and fast. This work aims to find a simple solution to that problem, to exemplify how a small change in thinking and structures can make a big difference. The proposal is a design system of square construction, with roots in historical fabric conservancy practices and by use of salvage craft techniques. By constructing garments out of squares, waste is eliminated by simple means and existing materials of different qualities can be cut in the same way, thereby rationalized, then assembled into larger materials and so an up cycling process is achieved. The result of this work is a versatile design system which may lead to many different outcomes in the hands of different designers without compromising on desired fit and without the waste generated from cutting conventionally. In the present fashion field solutions such as this system are necessary to encourage the apprehensive designer to take steps towards sustainable practices.

Jalia, Aftab. "Innovative masonry shell construction in India's evolving building crafts : a case for tile vaulting." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/271686.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses the lens of building technology to examine cultural exchange and its relationship to the building crafts. By focusing on masonry vaulting in India, my research brings together two worlds – one that shines light on the variety of innovative masonry shell construction techniques that exist in the county and another that seeks to evaluate the scope of tile vaulting, an over 600-year old Mediterranean building technique, within India’s evolving building crafts culture. This thesis is organized in three parts: PART ONE Tile Vaulting and Relevance Today | A Brief History of Masonry Shells in India Part one introduces tile vaulting’s unique principles compared to other vaulting traditions while contextualizing its relevance to present day India. A survey of varied masonry vaulting techniques and modules, endemic and imported, practiced across India is presented against the backdrop of what is a predominantly reinforced concrete-based construction industry. PART TWO Modules, Methods and Motivations The second part of this research comprises case studies that include some of India’s most iconic buildings such as the Villa Sarabhai by Le Corbusier, the National Institute of Design by Gautam Sarabhai and Sangath by B.V. Doshi, each of which employed innovative construction techniques for its vaults. The production and use of the enigmatic ceramic fuses in India is examined for the first time alongside their indigenous cousins: burnt clay tubes. Together with Muzaffarnagar vaulting, the case studies reveal cultural motivations for architectural expression and production in postcolonial India. PART THREE Prototypes | Comparatives | Limitations & Extension of Research Part three presents five tile vaulting prototypes in India constructed with local artisans to gain understanding of its cultural reception, assess effective transfer of skills and potential internalisation. Recommendations for tile vaulting’s potential uptake into mainstream architectural production is evaluated by comparing findings against prevalent building methods and by contextualizing current architectural trends and social policy. Limitations and scope for extension of research are also discussed.

Abstract:
The clothes and domestic textiles of the sixteenth century were, next to food, one of the absolute necessities for humankind to survive. This study examines the different types and constructions of textiles closely, using an historical approach, reading original documentation and viewing the scarce fragments of remaining examples. Due to the class of society being considered and the fragility of the textiles, other rare samples, from beyond the sixteenth century needed to be considered to try and assemble a true picture of the textiles available. Agriculture, demography, geography and history have all been drawn upon. The lack of actual samples and the chasm in information regarding these forgotten items of daily living have been continually assessed and evaluated. Other themes addressed include: the relationship of the yeoman in society through sumptuary law; their respect for and association with nature for raw materials; and innovation in improving their skills. Practical attempts to reveal an authentic colour palette of the yeoman world, although not conclusive, have permitted a fresh approach for further enquiry. This research includes detailed worksheets and various hand woven samples which support the practical element of this study, giving a valuable foundation for further investigation. This original work will be of educational value in portraying this sector of society, so easily overlooked because of the grandeur of the sixteenth century nobility. The samples provide tactile experiences reinforcing, the need of textiles to be 'fit for purpose'. Many skills from this period have been lost to future generations, only recreations based on balanced and empiric judgements will help evaluate the of these forgotten fabrics

Abstract:
The purpose and underlying motivation for this project was to examine the procedure of garment construction methods, by specifically choosing to abandon traditional rules and standards that are associated with mass production. I chose to explore domestic hand-craft made by women in New Zealand in their domestic situation, focusing on hand-stitched techniques from the past reflecting a nostalgic value which potentially contributed to the garment’s construction process. The project sought to utilize the re-using of materials by incorporating previously made hand-craft; and looked at the remaking of second-hand garments by means of deconstruction and reconstruction. Traditional hand-craft, in this context, refers to the use of craft forms not governed by principles of efficiency, mass production or technology, allowing the garments to contain unique ‘one of a kind’ hand-made qualities. My studio practice specifically focused on exploring the relationship between hand-craft and garment construction, by researching their application and integration into the garment’s structure, along with disrupting the orderly traditional production process. I was not focusing on the finished garment’s design. The project provided an opportunity to refocus my attention on the hand-made, as I perceived that the skills required to produce these were being extinguished by modern lifestyles. Exploration promoted new discoveries by exposing the construction process and revealing unpredicted combinations. The project explored these ideas, resulting in a range of women’s garments that revealed, as part of their construction, hand-work which offered a modern variation of nostalgia. This project comprised of 80% practical work and will be accompanied by an exegesis with a value of 20%.

Abstract:
A Thesis Submitted to Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Johannesburg, August 2017
This research investigates how on-site craft gangs adapt to the production environment on-site and how on-site learning is affected by prior learning in orders to optimise productivity. To achieve the aim of the study, previous experience of construction production process of craft gangs, site supervisors and the project managers working in Nigerian construction firms was evaluated. The researcher employed a mixed method research approach utilising qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research strategies used in this investigation included interviews and observation method. A face-to-face semi-structured interviews of (15) participants comprising of craft gangs, site supervisors and the project managers was used in the qualitative method of the data collection to explore the project specific constraints and the response mechanism used to resolve the various constraints. A standard observation data form was used in all the observed seven (7) gang’s blockwork craft gangs on the construction site. The interview transcript results collected were analysed using content analysis, an objective and systematic form of data analysis applicable to analysing interview data. In the application of the learning curve model to the blockwork craft gang’s, the straight-line model was used in the preliminary analysis of the application of learning curve theory to blockwork craft gang’s. In this study, the ordinary least squares technique, frequently referred to as linear regression was used for the data analysis. 0.05% significance level was used as a satisfactory degree of the inferences in the observation part of this study. Blockwork craft gang’s observed at the site shows approximately an overall average learning of 94.21%, resulting in 5.79% improvement in blockwork gang’s productivity. In addition, substantial impact on productivity of blockwork construction was achieved in wall construction. This research work is fundamental in construction management by way of developing an understanding into the changing aspects of on-site blockwork craft gangs learning and its impact on productivity. The repetitive nature of blockwork activities has an important influence on the optimisation of productivity. Construction craft gangs productivity constraints and response mechanism generated in this study provides a methodological instrument for addressing the major constraints influencing craft gangs productivity. This instrument will also permit future research on the project specific constraints and the response mechanisms used to resolve the constraints.

Grau, Torrent David 1970. "Development of a methodology for automating the identification and localization of engineered components and assessment of its impact on construction craft productivity." 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/18348.

Full text
Abstract:
Even though construction components account for more than fifty percent of the total installed costs, industry practices still solely rely on the human ability to individually track thousands of these components on the site. These primitive tracking processes are inefficient, error-prone, and can significantly hinder project performance. Thus, previous research efforts observed that up to eighteen percent of craft work-hours was attributable to the unavailability of components required for installation. Recently, though, the notion that these ineffective tracking processes can highly benefit from the implementation of information technologies (IT) has gained industry acceptance. However, the reality is that this IT influence on construction performance has not yet been addressed. The objectives of this study are (1) to develop a methodology for the automated identification and localization of engineered components on large industrial projects, and (2) to assess and to quantify the impact of this automating tracking process on project performance. The identification and localization methodology is proposed based on the combination of advanced sensing devices and localization algorithms. The integration of global positioning system (GPS) and radio frequency identification (RFID) receivers facilitates a network-free data collection process capable of detecting the presence of large numbers of RFID-tagged components almost instantly. Based on the collected data, localization algorithms precisely estimate the coordinates of the tagged items. The precision of this automated approach is validated by means of lab and field experiments. Complementarily, the impact of this localization methodology on project performance was quantified during an extensive field trial on a large industrial site. For this purpose, field records from manual and automated tracking processes were collected during the trial. Then, the influence of the automated tracking process on construction performance was determined by considering the manual approach as the baseline for comparison. The results demonstrate that information technologies can significantly enhance project performance.

Improvements on construction productivity benefits projects. These benefits are diverse and varied. Costs can be reduced, schedule performance can be improved, skilled labor shortage can be mitigated, and much more. These last few years, construction sites have undeniably made significant progress through advances in heavy equipment, tools, and materials. But there are still some areas that have strong potential to improve construction productivity such as craft information systems, materials management, and construction methods, which abound of opportunities that just need to be pursued. Innovations represent some of these opportunities, however if established process and practices for managing construction productivity are not effectively utilized and implemented, they are likely to have a little impact on construction productivity. This thesis summarizes a research study which aimed to identify productivity practices that have the most significant positive impact on craft productivity and to document and incorporate them into an implementation resource. Surveys involving over a hundred experts and extensive literature review were used to gather accurate data. Construction industry and civil engineering academic experts were also consulted to accomplish this goal.

Abstract:
Collaboration between the playwright, director, designer and technicians is the backbone of theater. Costume designers, after discussion with the director and the other designers, rely on costume technicians to realize their ideas. The technician’s hands then realize the artistic vision. But what would the technicians try if there were no constraints? I am a technician, a craftsperson who is inspired not just by the play, but also by process, by methods. With every new technique I learn, I imagine the new ways it could be put to use, and the objects I would create if time and resources were not a factor. Imagined objects are seldom created. Once made, these objects exist without a performance, without a purpose. A costume not worn is an unfulfilled destiny. But maybe the pieces I want to make can be given a narrative after the act of construction, or during construction. I’m interested in exploring my ability to be a generative artist. How can my inspiration feed back into the theater community? Can a costume technician’s experimentation have a place in creating new theater? My thesis has two components, exploring my two interests. Those two interests are the creation of objects and the creation of a story. The first component, object creation, was an exploratory study of mask and headdress making techniques. I experimented with new techniques, such as 3-D printing, testing the limitations of new technology. The second component, story creation, was a collaborative process. My collaborator, Brian Oglesby, and I worked concurrently. Brian is a playwright, and as he wrote the play, I made the objects. Our processes mirrored each other. The narrative of the play incorporated the masks and headpieces I made. This project created a theater piece based on the experimentation of a costume technician, and presents a new way for future technicians to think about their work and to have their stories told.

Abstract:
Marine search and rescue activities have been plagued with the problem of risking the lives of rescuers in rescue operations. With increasing developments in sensor technologies, it became a necessity in the marine search and rescue community to develop an autonomous marine craft to assist in rescue operations. Autonomy of marine craft requires a robust localization technique and process. To apply robust localization to marine craft, GPS technology was used to determine the position of the marine craft at any given point in time. Given that the operational environment of the marine was at open air, river, sea etc. GPS signal was always available to the marine craft as there are no obstructions to GPS signal. Adequate cognizance of the current position and states of an unmanned marine craft was a critical requirement for navigation of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV). The unmanned surface vehicle uses GPS in conjunction with state estimated solution provided by inertial sensors. In the absence of the GPS signal, navigation is resumed with a digital compass and inertial sensors to such a time when the GPS signal becomes accessible. GPS based navigation can be used for an unmanned marine craft with the mathematical modelling of the craft meeting the functional requirements of an unmanned marine craft. A low cost GPS unit was used in conjunction with a low cost inertial measurement unit (IMU) with sonar for obstacle detection. The use of sonar in navigation algorithm of marine craft was aimed at surveillance of the operational environment of the marine craft to detect obstacles on its path of motion. Inertial sensors were used to determine the attitude of the marine craft in motion.

This study aims to create a model for reference for transformations of traditional crafts designs. It takes Liudui’s traditional bamboo curtain crafts as an example to explore the possibilities of transformation design for traditional crafts. The transformation design of traditional crafts is different from the design of new products, and the basis of the design cannot deviate from the original threads. Accordingly, the main goal of this research is to engage in transforming the design of products, which is based on tradition, and to break away from its framework at the same time. The design of creative thinking structure lies in Morphological Analysis, Attribute Listing, and SCAMPER. This research was also supplemented by the Delphi method for expert consultation. Through the checklist, the independent viewpoints of each expert were collected, and from their repeated feedback and aggregation, the recommendations were summarized and finally based on this, simulation designs of bamboo curtains and value assessment and analysis of the value levels were carried out to explore various possibilities of transformation design for bamboo crafts. This study, by taking scholarly discussions and expert opinions and consultations into account, constructs three levels of value in the design of cultural and creative products. The products with different design orientations have different core focuses. Craft design and industrial design products are more focused on the satisfaction of “Practical Level, while creative design products are more focused on “Sensory Level.” Cultural products are more focused on “Spiritual Level,” but creative and cultural products' design does not focus on a single value level, instead, they attempt to balance the multiple values to meet the diverse needs of consumers. Therefore, a well-designed cultural and creative product not only has the value on the practical level but also has the values on the sensory and spiritual levels. The proportion of the three value levels depends on the difference in product design attributes. They can have different focuses, but should not be neglected. The product that can be balanced among the three is the best creative and cultural product. Therefore, it is expected that this study, through the construction of a model of transformation design for bamboo curtain crafts, is able to establish a model of transformation design for products of crafts for reference, hoping that the traditional crafts can not only be based on tradition but also bring consumers a refreshing feeling and revive the past glory.

In the past, Jhushan witnessed the formation of an industrial settlement centered on the region’s production of bamboo. Such settlement can be compared to those in other regions of Taiwan. Although the core groups of skilled senior craftsmen and professional groups still exist Jhushan, the craft industry in Taiwan is facing continued decline in skilled manpower and industrial transformation. In this study, we find that the main factors in the reduced activity of the bamboo craft industry include human aging and the lack of training to develop skills that are difficult to acquire, and craftsmen who have different and more modern design ideas. In current design education, many design students also do not have first-hand knowledge of the materials required for this craft. This lack of finer understanding of the material and construction methods can lead to difficulties in product development. Another source of difficulty in product development is the required compliance with the status of the favorable conditions of supply and demand. With the use of the “Empowerment Model,” craftsmen and designer professionals can work together to provide excellent products. During the process of teaching and learning, students can increase the quality and diversity of their design works. This will also help develop their skills beyond those of the traditional inherited skills, opening a world of new possibilities. Hence, in accordance with the special nature of this craft industry’s needs and its future potential, it is necessary to employ education and the Empowerment Model in the development and construction of bamboo craft. In this study, which introduces the Collaborative Team Teaching (CTT) research approach, we designed a series of activities to reflect the local culture technology value of bamboo weaving. We used the view of young students who specialize in architecture design and skills, specifically the difficulties they face in cultivating their talents in relation to this traditional craft. The research process is divided into three phases as follows: (1) exploration and study of the field though further interviews of locals and field observation activities, and the reconstruction of the sustainability of bamboo craft skills heritage; (2) planning design and creation of CCT to encourage designers and craftsmen to train students together and to explore the feasibility of CTT as a mediator between the profession of design and technology of the craft; and finally, (3) the use of the “empowerment model construction” through a series of observations, study, reflection, and action to participate in exhibition. Inspiring students' interest in the craft can also make them understand the difficulties as well as the opportunity to attract newcomers to engage in this craft. To construct the course of the Empowerment Model, this research proposes the "Sustainability Strategy of Inheritance of Bamboo crafts," which is divided into three parts as follows:(1)Bamboo diversified application strategy, (2) Strategy for promoting craftsmen, (3) Strategy of Artistic commercialization development. By combining bamboo, engineering and skill, we can promote the sustainability of the bamboo craft cultural heritage. Furthermore, developing CCT can increase understanding of the empowerment action and the relationships among all participants, thus improving the overall value of the development approach via education and training. Finally, we can construct “The Bamboo Craft Empowerment Model” through a series of actions that ensure the development and training program execution.

Abstract:
M.Tech. (Interior Design)
Commissioned public buildings in post-apartheid South Africa exhibit a synergy between local craft and contemporary design in their interiors. Tasked with the design of buildings representative of a democratic South Africa, architects looked to the surrounding communities, recognizing and incorporating local craft skills and products into their designs. The buildings selected as examples for this study are the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature (2001) in Nelspruit, the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (2003) in Kimberley, and the Constitutional Court (2004) in Johannesburg. These have been selected as they are the three buildings commissioned after 1994 by the democratically elected South African government. This research aims to determine how national identity has been communicated and represented in the interior design of these public buildings, through the inclusion of local craft. As key public buildinqs of this time there has been considerable research done based on these examples in the field of architecture, notably by the authors Freschi (2006,2007) and Noble (2011), however, no research has been done in the field of interior design. By taking an interpretivist approach, this qualitative study seeks to find meaning and deeper understanding. Data was collected in transcribed interviews, observations in the field as well as a literature review. Qualitative content analysis was used to initiate a comparison between the interior design of the buildings. Through the use of crystallization as a methodology it attempts to offer a thickly described interpretation of three public interiors undertaken in the development of a national design identity. This study could be of interest to interior design students, interior design and architectural professionals undertaking similar projects and government departments interested in this field.

In recent years, tourism flourishing combined with hand-made culture of teaching. DIY (Do It Yourself) has been widely applied in the planning of the trip. Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs promulgated "factory job elements concurrently tour" in 2003 to encourage local industries and cultural traditions in manufacturing integrated tourism service, also revealed the importance of DIY self-evaluation of its specification. In view of this, how will the culture into DIY activities through creative design and high customer recognition of experience goods to achieve marketing purposes, became a common topic of industrial, product design, tourism and cultural and creative marketing four major areas of management. This study investigates DIY products by the content analysis method, and then extracts the experiential value of the visitors participating DIY through in-depth interview. Also, this study applies the heoretical basis of the experiential value to combine different points of view including customer behavior, local innovation and cultural value to explore the value elements to set evaluation index and value facets. Furthermore, the questionnaire in this study is detected by expert content validity, and final decisions take AHP output weights. Afterwards by major facets ” experiential quality” and ” emotion acquisition” and minor facets ” function and price” and ” social and service” that construct a set of experiential value assessment model of the DIY product, with “playfulness” the evaluation index exercised most powerful influence. The result indicated three key points. First, intangible harvest is higher than the tangible income. Secong, the value of experience is dominated by self-awareness of tourists. Third, range of goods should be expanded to comprehensive services. That provides industry stakeholders with reference for decision-making.

Photographic technology is increasingly respondent to a desire for the production and consumption of information. The current age of photography not only possesses the ability to capture the image, but also to capture photographic metadata as supplemental information. Engaging in the premise that the photographic image exists as an incomplete medium to the transfer of information, this research identifies the acquisition of data as a means to resolve interpretation and quantify the photographic image. Inhabiting a complex territory within this structure, the photographic image manifests multiplicity and operates as source, production, and capture of information. This work challenges the perceptions of how to engage with the dialogues created between the photographic image, and the externally appended metadata.
