Abstract:
Chronic constipation is an extremely common and costly condition that can negatively impact the patient’s quality of life, resulting in a major economic and social burden. Most patients do not understand their situation and suffer from social isolation. The developmental particularities of the child cause the etiology and symptomatology of constipation to differ from those described by adults, which requires a specific management in terms of diagnosis and treatment. The specialty literature to date relies on fragmented studies focused on these particularities, as well as on the multitude of aspects of diagnostic and treatment related to chronic stool retention and bowel evacuation in children. The problem that is being studied is important not only from a medical and socioeconomic point of view, but also because some complications caused by chronic constipation (such as encopresis and enuresis) lead to the social isolation and physical and psycho-emotional impairment of these children.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Functional constipation (FC) is a common health problem in paediatrics that causes significant physical and emotional distress to patients and their families. AIM: In the current work, we assessed the presence of behavioural problems in children with functional constipation and their pattern and relation to various demographic and disease-associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted, including 55 consecutive children aged 4-16 years diagnosed with functional constipation and 55 healthy age and sex-matched controls. Psychological assessment was done using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist – 17 (PSC-17). RESULTS: Twenty-six (47.3%) patients with FC had positive total PSC-17 scores while none of the controls had positive scores (p-value < 0.001). Positive internalising and externalising behaviours scores and attention problems were found in 36 (65.5%), 15 (27.3%) and 12 (21.8%) of the patients respectively in contrary to controls where only 6 (10.9%) had positive scores in internalising behaviour, and non-showed externalising behaviour and 4 (7.3%) were inattentive. Older age, longer duration of illness, residency in rural areas and presence of encopresis were found to have a significant association with the presence of such problems. CONCLUSION: Children with FC have more behavioural disorders compared to healthy controls. Integration of psychosocial aspects and their management is recommended during dealing with patients with FC.

Abstract:
Medical rehabilitation is an integral part of the treatment for surgical patients. Regarding pediatric patients with anorectal malformations, the success of the result of surgical treatment is mainly a correctly selected rehabilitation program, including methods of individual physiotherapy. Disturbances of intestinal transit, such as chronic constipation and anal incontinence, according to the world literature, occur in the study group in up to 30% of cases. According to the social significance of constipation and anal incontinence, the psychological aspects, the disabling component, children with anorectal malformations need early and long-term rehabilitation, adapted to their needs. At the moment, there are regulatory documents describing the principles of medical rehabilitation of children, its main characteristics, however, there are no protocols for the use of physiotherapy methods regarding the manifestations of colon transit disorders. Aim. Analysis of modern literature data on physiotherapeutic methods of rehabilitation of children with anorectal malformations. Material and methods. After determining the research criteria, a basic literature review using Web of Science, PubMed, electronic library was conducted, as a result 186 articles were selected that met the search criteria. After the initial assessment, 10 full-text articles were accepted for the analysis. Results. We have assessed the opportunity and mechanisms of the therapeutic action of sacral stimulation and tibial neuromodulation, the effect of various types of currents and a high-intensity magnetic field on the muscles of the complex, studied the possibility and results of using biofeedback therapy in children with colon transit disorders after operations on the anorectal body area in 421 children in 10 studies. Conclusion. Based on the results of scientific research, a range of physiotherapy methods have been established that are effective in relation to rehabilitation measures in children with anorectal malformations.

Abstract:
This study aims to identify the factors contributing to stress among indigenous preschool children. The subjects of the study consisted of an Orang Asli pre-school child who had been diagnosed with stress at 73 points based on the Child and Adolescent of Experiences (CASE) stress test. The design of a qualitative of case studies has been used in interviewing, observing and analyzing documents as a data collection instrument. Nvivo software is used as a tool to assist in the process of data transcription analysis. The findings show that school factors contributors to stress on indigenous preschool children involved in this study. However, efforts must be mobilized by the school to help indigenous children involved in the psychological and emotional aspects of developing in education.

Научная актуальность данной темы обусловлена тем, что семья как ячейка современного общества выступает фундаментальной основой социально-правовой политики государства, является одним из критериев повышения уровня семейных ценностей в плане воспитания детей, совершенствования так называемого «родительского» института, пропаганды значимости образа семейной жизни. Основополагающим показателем социально-правового развития Российской Федерации на современном этапе является гарантия безопасности детей и подростков. В свою очередь, это проявление превентивной функции государства в лице соответствующих органов внутренних дел. Познание сущности профилактической деятельности правоохранительных органов имеет важное предназначение, поскольку задача предупреждения правонарушений среди подростков должна отличаться систематично-эффективной результативностью. Иначе нет смысла вести активную работу в поиске действенных средств в борьбе с антисоциальными проявлениями. Необходимость усиления профилактических мер воспитательного воздействия возрастает с каждым днем. Ребенок должен осознавать и чувствовать защиту своих конституционных прав и свобод. Научные исследования показали необходимость правового просвещения детей посредством государственного механизма воздействия с учетом особенностей образовательных учреждений, возрастного ценза и домашних условий, в которых воспитывается ребенок. При этом положительная динамика будет наблюдаться лишь комплексным подходом всех государственных органов в лице трех ветвей власти (законодательная, исполнительная и судебная), используя опыт европейских держав с последующей унификацией норм международного права. The scientific relevance of this topic is due to the fact that the family, as a unit of modern society, acts as the fundamental basis of the state’s social and legal policy, is one of the criteria for increasing the level of family values in terms of raising children, improving the so-called “parental” institution, and promoting the importance of family life. The fundamental indicator of the socio-legal development of the Russian Federation at the present stage is the guarantee of the safety of children and adolescents. In turn, this is a manifestation of the preventive function of the state in the person of the relevant internal affairs bodies. Understanding the essence of law enforcement preventive activities has an important purpose, since the task of preventing delinquency among adolescents must be systematically effective. Otherwise, it makes no sense to actively work in the search for effective means in the fight against antisocial manifestations. The need to strengthen preventive measures of educational impact is increasing every day. The child must be aware and feel the protection of his constitutional rights and freedoms. Scientific studies have shown the need for legal education of children through the state mechanism of influence, taking into account the characteristics of educational institutions, age qualification and home conditions in which the child is brought up. In this case, the positive dynamics will be observed only by the integrated approach of all state bodies represented by the three branches of government (legislative, executive and judicial), using the experience of the European powers with the subsequent unification of international law.

One of the factors that influence the case of stunting in children is the mother's parenting manner. This parenting manner is not only when the baby is born, but since the baby is still in the womb of the mother, which in turn can affect the child's growth and development. In an effort to prepare a physically, psychologically and socially healthy pregnancy and fetus both in the womb and in the future. a group of therapeutic therapy was administered to pregnant women. Although there have been efforts to improve maternal health through various government programs, these efforts have only touched on the physical aspects and have not yet addressed the efforts to improve the psychosocial and psychological aspects of pregnant women. This is important because cognitive and emotional growth and development of children are closely related to maternal psychological problems during pregnancy. Many studies have reported that the case of depression in pregnant and lactating women has resulted in delays in cognitive and emotional development of children at various ages, so this intervention is important. Therapeutic Group Therapy (TKT) in pregnant women is important in the hope that pregnant women can adapt well to any changes in pregnancy, especially psychological changes and are able to stimulate the development of the fetus they contain. This TKT can be followed by all 11 participants with a value of> 2 meaning that participants can continue until all sessions at this TKT are finished, but they must always be monitored during its implementation and involve local midwives in this activity so that participants are able to independently care for babies and also able to carry out the role of the mother proportionally, after giving birth later.

Рассмотрена проблема формирования профессиональной компетентности педагогов в области психолого-педагогического сопровождения детей с ограниченными возможностями здоровья (ОВЗ). В качестве методов исследования применены: изучение нормативно-правовых документов, регулирующих сферу образования; анализ современных тематических исследований; обобщение опыта подготовки педагогов и повышения их квалификации. Обозначены опорные точки модернизации теоретической и практической подготовки специалистов сопровождения детей с ОВЗ. Обсуждаются организационно-методические аспекты повышения профессиональной компетентности педагогов в сфере комплексного сопровождения детей с ОВЗ. The article is devoted to the problem of formation of teachers’ professional competence teachers in the field of psychological and pedagogical support for children with disabilities. The following methods were used as research methods: the study of legal documents regulating the sphere of education; analysis of contemporary case studies and methods of teachers’ training. We indicate the key points for the modernization of the theoretical and practical training of specialists in accompanying children with disabilities. We also discuss organizational and methodological aspects of increasing teachers’ professional competence in the field of comprehensive support for children with disabilities.

Human allografts for life-threatening organ failure have been demonstrated to be lifesaving and are now considered to be standard of care for many conditions. Transplantation of non-vital anatomic body parts has also been accomplished. Hand transplantation after limb loss in adults has been shown to offer some promising benefits in both functional and psychological measures in preliminary studies. It has been suggested to expand eligibility criteria to include minors, with one such operation having already been performed. With this in mind, we examine the current state of hand transplantation research in the context of available alternatives. We examine the ethics of carrying out these operations in minors, including under the protections of clinical research. We argue that children should not be considered for this surgery due to the substantial risks of immunosuppressive medication, the likelihood that the graft will need to be replaced during the patient’s lifetime and the lack of significant compensatory advantages over modern prosthetics.

Abstract:
The anatomical and physiological characteristics of a growing organism require a specific approach to the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases. Not enough attention is paid toward improving the oral health of children suffering from diabetes mellitus, as well as therapeutic and prophylactic measures aimed at preserving teeth and preventing exacerbations of the inflammatory process in periodontal tissues. The results of clinical studies indicate a high prevalence of dental diseases in patients with type I diabetes mellitus; there are not enough reliable results of such indicators depending on the age and duration of this endocrine pathology, diabetic complications, hypoglycemic therapy taking into account metabolic control. Diagnosis of periodontal diseases is complicated by the peculiarities of the child’s psychological perception, caused by age-specific characteristics and the influence of common manifestations of inflammatory diseases. Children of primary school age often demonstrate increased motor activity, a hyperergic reaction even to minor negative feelings, the difficulty of adequate behaviour in an unfamiliar environment and a correct assessment of what is happening, being stressed due to the presence of many phobias associated with doctors and medical manipulations, communicative difficulties caused by staying in the spotlight, meeting new people, talking with adults. Teaching children must necessarily be accompanied by educating parents, since within limited time interval of dental appointment a doctor does not have the opportunity to fully monitor and consolidate the knowledge and skills the child has received, and this responsibility falls on parents. In this case, some attention should be paid to issues of skills, motivation as well as on the importance dental care aspects for the development of the dentofacial system, since in the vast majority of cases, parents are not enough aware on these issues. In addition to educating and fostering the motivation, it is necessary to control the level of knowledge, the frequency and quality of tooth brushing. For young children, it is necessary to do complete cleaning up the chewing group of teeth due to the low level of children’s manual skills.

Abstract There is something peculiar about memory insofar as it tends to be formed across boundaries. We can think of it as located in an in-between zone, on the threshold »where the outside world meets the world inside you« (Salman Rushdie, Midnight’s Children). Somehow, memory oscillates between the inside and the outside, connecting the subjective and the objective, the imaginary and the real, the self and the other, the individual and the collective. Memory involves all aspects of human life, be they biological, psychological, social, or cultural. Due to its omnipresence, memory is the object of a diverse range of disciplines. Correspondingly, the field of memory studies is situated at the intersection of a bewildering variety of disciplines, which creates exciting interdisciplinary opportunities, but also epistemological and methodological challenges. According to Mieke Bal, interdisciplinarity »must seek its heuristic and methodological basis in concepts rather than methods«. Liminality is a concept that seems particularly well-suited to address problems that arise from the distinctive in-between position of memory. So far, however, it has been largely ignored in memory studies. The concept of liminality deals with ›threshold‹ characteristics. Liminal phenomena and states are »betwixt and between«; they are »necessarily ambiguous« and »slip through the network of classifications« (Victor Turner). The concept of liminality helps to avoid »delusions of certainty« (Siri Hustvedt) by drawing attention to interstitial entities and processes that resist clear-cut categorizations and are inherently blurry and impalpable. »Every brain is the product of other brains« (Hustvedt) and so is memory: »we always carry with us and in us a number of distinct persons« (Maurice Halbwachs). Instead of being able to distinguish clearly between individual, social, and cultural memory, we are confronted with their dynamic interactions and complex entanglements: »to understand me, you’ll have to swallow a world« (Rushdie, Midnight’s Children). There is »the constant ›travel‹ of mnemonic contents between media and minds« (Astrid Erll), as well as their ›migration‹ from one culture to another (Aby Warburg). Memory is deeply relational and always in motion in regions of the ›between‹. This contribution focuses on these qualities through the lens of liminality. Its purpose is to introduce the concept of liminality as an analytical tool in literary memory studies and to put it to the test by applying it to a paradigmatic literary text about memory. Section one provides an introduction to the concept of liminality as it was developed by the anthropologist Victor Turner. The second section brings liminality and memory together and reflects on liminal, relational, and complex aspects of memory, with the main emphasis on complexity. In section three, the focus shifts to literature and the applicability of liminality as a concept in literary memory studies. Theories implicitly dealing with liminality are given special consideration: the triadic model of Wolfgang Iser’s literary anthropology, Paul Ricœur’s circle of threefold mimesis, and Homi Bhabha’s theory of ›Third Space‹. Section four examines liminal aspects of memory in Midnight’s Children, using the concept of liminality as a tool for literary analysis. The article ends with a brief conclusion and outlook. This contribution argues that liminality is an innovative concept in literary theory and literary memory studies. Liminality facilitates processual approaches and helps to avoid false certainties created by static concepts. Two different perspectives on liminality can be taken in literary memory studies: we can either study the mnemonic liminality of literature itself or the mnemonic liminality represented in literature. The ›fictional privileges‹ of literature in dealing with mnemonic liminality receive particular attention. Literature’s experientiality and its unique freedom in the depiction of consciousness allow fictional texts to portray the subjective experience of mnemonic liminality. Literature can represent mnemonic liminality in practically all of its aspects. Such representations concern, for instance, the multi-layered overlappings between memory and imagination, the complex interactions between the individual and collective levels of memory, the intricacies of communication and the crucial role of language and media in these processes. As a theoretical tool in literary memory studies, the concept of liminality enables us to identify and interpret the literary staging and reflection of these liminal aspects of memory as well as the narrative techniques involved. Although the variety of techniques is potentially unlimited, some devices seem especially effective. The analysis of Midnight’s Children shows that magic realism as well as metaphors and allegories are particularly powerful means of representing the liminality of memory. Furthermore, the narrator’s behavior plays a crucial role in the staging of mnemonic liminality. In the case of Midnight’s Children, the narrator’s partial unreliability as well as his numerous intertextual and intercultural references signify liminal aspects of his memory. The narrator crosses certain boundaries when his remembering self overlays his remembered self or when he oscillates between his first-person perspective and a miraculous omniscience that makes him appear to be the receptacle of other people’s memories. Moreover, structural means of representation such as leitmotifs and the semanticization of space and objects are forceful techniques to depict mnemonic liminality.

Abstract:
The National Alliance for Youth Sports compared field reports released in 1995 to those in 2000, illustrating a 5% to 15% increase in adults that have gotten out of line at youth events (Carlozo, 2000). The purpose of this study was to assess the nature and frequency of adult comments at Little League baseball games for children ages 9 to 12. In addition, adults were surveyed in order to evaluate their personal opinions of crowd conduct.The participants in this study consisted of adults attending Little League baseball games in rural Indiana from May 30, 2001 to June 26, 2001. To address the purpose of the study, the researcher recorded adult comments using an adaptation of the Parent Observation Instrument for Sports Events (Kidman et al., 1999). An additional sample of 65 adults attending the last game of the season was purposefully selected to complete the survey portion of the study.The researcher tried to determine if there were significant differences between the nature of the adult comments (positive or negative), the frequency of adult comments by team play (offense or defense), by gender of the adult, by team status (winning or losing), or by competitive level (major league or minor league). Additionally, the researcher tried to determine whether there were qualitative differences between actual comments and adult opinions of comments.A chi square analysis was calculated for hypotheses 1 - 5 (p < .05) and the last hypothesis compared a chi square calculation to the frequency counts on a survey of adults. The results showed a significant difference in the frequency of comments based on the nature of the comment (positive/negative), gender, and competitive level (major league/minor league). There was no significant difference between team status (winning/losing) and frequency of comments made. There was consistency between adults' opinions of comments and actual observations. Observation results showed higher frequencies of positive comments than negative comments. Through survey data analysis, it was determined that adults believed more positive comments were made at the games.

This study offers a detailed exploration of the personal narrative of a nine year old boy diagnosed with a learning disability, and explains how the nature of the therapeutic relationship facilitated shifts in his personal understandings of himself, others and the world. Children diagnosed with learning disabilities experience a range of challenges in their different life contexts, and particularly within the school context. This is often because of constant evaluation and surveillance from teachers, family members and peers, who define the child within rigid and limiting frameworks. Soon enough children diagnosed with learning disabilities develop problem-saturated narratives that can significantly influence their relationship with themselves and others. This is because the individualising effects of having a disability cause them to feel different or isolated from their peers. This study illustrates an eight session case study, facilitated by a narrative play therapy approach, between a counsellor, a child and his parents. The therapeutic encounters were intended to assist the child in moving away from problem-saturated narratives of incompetence and inferiority towards more preferred narratives that would positively influence his self esteem. Children Diagnosed with a Learning Disability Children who have been diagnosed with a learning disability often experience themselves and their world very differently from other children (Rodis, Garrod, & Boscardin, 2001). Within the educational system a considerable amount of pressure is placed on children to succeed. The educational discourse of achievement that professes itself to be the only direction from which a successful future can be attained, marginalizes and rejects those children whose knowledge and skills exist outside this rigid and oftentimes insensitive system of evaluation. As a result, children soon create problem saturated narratives, believing themselves to be the problem. However, in the last two decades there has been a move from reductionism to constructivism and as a result research in the field of learning disabilities has started to focus on children’s non-traditional strengths and talents, which are often misunderstood and ignored by schools. Little research has addressed directly increasing the diversity of activities and interests for this population. This study describes a program developed to increase activities and interests in a girl dually-diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD-NOS) and Downs syndrome (DS). A multiple-baseline design across stimuli was employed to evaluate the program. The results show that the program increased number of total and different toy interactions. No effects were observed for overall duration of toy interactions. Results are discussed in relation to play skill instruction and preference assessment literature, the cusp, and autism intervention programs.

Abstract:
I examined the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy (CCPT) and person-centered teacher consultation (PCTC) for elementary school children identified with clinical or borderline levels of ADHD behaviors on the Teacher Report Form and the Conners' Teacher Rating Scale Revised - Short Form. Additionally, I examined the impact of CCPT and PCTC on the levels of parenting and teaching stress. Due to the current trend to determine interventions that are evidence-based through between-group or single case designs, for this study, I utilized a single case design experiment for which the behaviors of five children were examined. Trained observers utilized the Direct Observation Form in observations of all five students three times per week. Additionally, parents and teachers completed behavioral rating scales and stress inventories at pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. To prevent biased observational ratings, observers were blind to the assignment of the five children. Three students participated in 24 sessions of twice-weekly 30-minute sessions of CCPT, and these students' teachers participated in six sessions of once-weekly 10-minute PCTC. Two students participated in twice-weekly 30-minute sessions of reading mentoring, after which they participated in 14 sessions of CCPT. Visual analysis of the data indicated mixed results. Three students demonstrated substantial improvement in the observed ADHD behaviors within the classroom. Results of the parent and teacher assessment data were inconsistent, but did indicate behavior change for some children and a reduction in teaching stress for one teacher. Parenting stress appeared unaffected. Implications for future research regarding the use of single case design, the measurement of student behavior change, and issues of comorbidity are indicated.

The aim of this study is to develop an understanding of how Grahamstown teenagers are affected by the label ʹdyslexiaʹ; by providing a space in which their feelings about being labelled dyslexic and their experiences can be voiced. Historically much international and local research has focussed on causation and remediation of dyslexia and has neglected the social aspects of the diagnosis. Causation and remediation are categories which form part of the medical or educational models. A social model of dyslexia needs to be applied. Due to the paucity of South African literature on the social experiences of dyslexic teenagers, this research thesis aims to add to the body of knowledge and hopefully provide an avenue for more research within the context of Sociology. This is a micro study, situated in Grahamstown Eastern Cape, South Africa, and the author recognizes that responses cannot be generalized to the greater dyslexic population. All human environments consist of objects which are given meaning through social interaction. Meaning is central to human behaviour and therefor explains the ways in which humans conduct their lives based on these meanings. For this reason George Herbert Mead’s (1934) and Herbert Blumers (1969) symbolic interactionist positions have framed the theoretical approach to this research. Qualitative methods of interviewing provide an opportunity for dyslexic individuals to discuss the meaning dyslexia gives to them, from their perspective and in their own words. The following conclusions have been arrived at: Educational psychologists in Grahamstown are reticent to diagnose individuals as dyslexic. This lack of identification hinders early intervention which can be very detrimental to individuals struggling with reading, writing and spelling as well as the associated co-morbid conditions of dyslexia. Teenagers who have had early diagnosis and intervention with support structures in place identify with their dyslexic identity more positively as they are able to make sense of their struggles of a dyslexic nature.

Parent marital status is a highly influential variable within the family context, as it can serve as a protective factor in many ways. However, it can also be a risk factor for youth. Despite the large body of literature that delineates the benefits of sports participation and the negative outcomes associated with divorce, researchers have yet to examine the impact of athletic participation on youth who have experienced familial disruptions, such as divorce, separation, and remarriage. Sports participation was chosen as a moderating variable in the present study, as it is believed to serve as a protective factor for those who experience parental divorce. Specifically, the present study aims to answer the following research question: Does sports participation moderate the effects of parent marital status and belongingness on achievement and behavior problems after controlling for sex, socioeconomic status, and maternal education? Many theoretical mechanisms support the hypothesis that positive outcomes are be associated with sporting programs, such as Social Capital Theory, as well as theories associated with 7 motivation and belonging. This study analyzed data collected as part of the NICHDSECCYD comprehensive longitudinal study. Specifically, the effects of parent marital status and belongingness on academic achievement were analyzed in AMOS 22, using a multiple group path model with sports participation as a moderator. Although results did not support sports participation as a moderator, findings supported previous research that connects intact, two-parent marriages with positive outcomes for youth.

Abstract:
There is a need to look at the determinants of exercise behavior in adolescents, as there is a large deficit of research concerning this population. The purpose of this study was to examine Social Physique Anxiety (SPA) and the body shape of adolescents participating in a semester of physical education class. A secondary purpose was to create general profiles by combining the SPA information and the Transtheoretical Model (TM) of behavior change. Middle school students (N= 374) participated by completing a regularly scheduled physical education class and completing the Exercise Behavior Change Survey (which assessed Body Shape, SPA and TM) pre and post semester. The study revealed participation in class had no effect on SPA levels or Body Shape scores, nor did the study reveal any gender differences with these two concepts. Concerning the TM, SPA may not be a factor for progressing through the stages of change, although it may effect which processes were utilized and how one identifies the pros and cons of exercising. The Social Physique Anxiety Scale only reached an alpha of .50, possibly contributing to the lack of relationship between SPA and TM.

The purpose of this study was to describe the effects of evacuation from Hurricane Andrew in August of 1993 and subsequent relocation following the storm on the young children of six families from Homestead Air Force Base, Florida. Interviews were conducted over a three-month period; these were supplemented with samples of the children's drawings and observations of the children at play. The resulting case studies illustrate various coping strategies utilized by the six families to deal with the loss of home, goods, and community in the wake of the storm and the ways in which these impacted the young children in each family. Parental coping styles were an influence on the children's ability to make the adjustments necessary during this especially stressful transition.

Abstract:
The chapter on the psychodynamic aspects of migration explains the parallels between the process of migration and of life and human development, which can be understood as a series of attachments and separations that can lead to personal growth but involve mourning for what is lost and forming new attachments. It explains the concept of culture shock and the process of transformation of the identity of the immigrant, the dynamics involved in acquiring a new language, and the psychodynamic challenges of starting a life in the new host country. It explains the psychological defenses that the immigrant may put in place to deal with the massive losses of migration and adapt to the new country, such as the loss of past human connections and material possessions, as well as the loss of a familiar climate and geography. It discusses the family dynamics of leaving children behind in the care of relatives and later reunifications with the immigrant parents in the new host country. The chapter offers treatment recommendations to deal with these issues. The chapter is also illustrated with case studies.
