The difference between natural and artificial materials is explained. The equivalent plasma frequency of wire media is derived. A list of metamaterial resonators is presented. The possibility of achieving negative refraction and its significance are discussed. It is shown that under certain circumstances it is possible to produce a perfect lens that could transfer evanescent waves aswell. Themulti-layer lens is shown to have advantages over the single-layer lens. The operation of a SiC lens based on the negative dielectric constant due to optical phonons is discussed. Detectors for magnetic resonance imaging, relying on the resonance of magnetoinductive waves are shown to be a potential application.

In the sixteenth century, a period of proliferating transatlantic travel and exploration, and, latterly, religious civil wars in France, the ship is freighted with political and religious, as well as poetic, significance; symbolism that reaches its height when ships – both real and symbolic – are threatened with disaster. The Direful Spectacle argues that, in the French Renaissance, shipwreck functions not only as an emblem or motif within writing, but as a part, or the whole, of a narrative, in which the dynamics of spectatorship and of co-operation are of constant concern. The possibility of ethical distance from shipwreck – imagined through the Lucretian suave mari magno commonplace – is constantly undermined, not least through a sustained focus on the corporeal. This book examines the ways in which the ship and the body are made analogous in Renaissance shipwreck writing; bodies are described and allegorized in nautical terms, and, conversely, ships themselves become animalized and humanized. Secondly, many texts anticipate that the descriptionof shipwreck will have an affect not only on its victims, but on those too of spectators, listeners, and readers. This insistence on the physicality of shipwreck is also reflected in the dynamic of bricolage that informs the production of shipwreck texts in the Renaissance. The dramatic potential of both the disaster and the process of rebuilding is exploited throughout the century, culminating in a shipwreck tragedy. By the late Renaissance, shipwreck is not only the end, but often forms the beginning of a story.

This chapter surveys music constraint programming systems, and how composers have used them. The chapter motivates why and explains how users of such systems describe intended musical results with constraints. This approach to algorithmic composition is similar to the way declarative and modular compositional rules have successfully been used in music theory for centuries as a device to describe composition techniques. This systematic overview highlights the respective strengths of different approaches and systems from a composer’s point of view, complementing other more technical surveys of this field. This text describes the music constraint systems PMC, Score-PMC, PWMC (and its successor Cluster Engine), Strasheela, and Orchidée—most are libraries of the composition systems PWGL or OpenMusic. These systems are shown in action by discussions of the composition processes of specific works by Jacopo Baboni Schilingi, Magnus Lindberg, Örjan Sandred, Torsten Anders, Johannes Kretz, and Jonathan Harvey.

The past 20 years have seen significant changes in both the demographics and natural history of many cardiovascular diseases. Important reductions in case-fatality rates (such as in acute coronary syndromes) have resulted from improved diagnostics and treatment options and better understanding of natural history. For others (such as infective endocarditis), improvements have been limited and disappointing. While advances in therapy and the scientific evidence underpinning treatments have been crucial, the importance of accurate diagnosis has remained a key element for progress. Many of the principles needed for diagnosis are constant: the pre-eminence of a focused, accurate history, complete physical examination, and timely and relevant investigation endures. It is essential to have a secure knowledge of the strengths and limitations of interpretation of a frequently bewildering array of tests. Progress in this field has been rapid; advances in ultrasound, scintigraphy, and cardiac magnetic resonance stand out at the interface between structure and function central to good patient care.

Furthermore it returns to the subject of female power and how the performers maintain and make cultural space for the magnetic power of femaleness. Finally, and in spite of performers' concerns about the future of local tradition, the chapter expresses optimism about the future of the performing arts in Malang, demonstrating how a new generation of performers is actively engaging with the art.

This chapter studies the structure of Maxwell’s equations in a vacuum and the action from which they are derived, while emphasizing the consequences of their gauge invariance. Gauge invariance, on the one hand, allows one of the components of the magnetic potential to be chosen freely. Here, the chapter shows how the gauge-invariant version of the Maxwell equations in the vacuum can also be derived directly by extremizing. On the other hand, the chapter argues that gauge invariance imposes a constraint on the initial conditions such that in the end the general solution has only two ‘degrees of freedom’. Finally, the chapter develops the Hamiltonian formalisms in the Maxwell theory and compares them to the formalisms using non-gauge-invariant or massive vector fields.

In this research work, we have demonstrated the synthesis, spectroscopic characteristics, thermal behaviour and DC conductivity of a few nanostructured composites, substituted conducting polymers (ICPs) and composites of ICPs. The physical properties of aforementioned composites are significantly changed by the doping with HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, or acrylic acid. The charge transport properties of these polymeric materials have been studied in detail because of their potential application in gas sensors. In the current work, varieties of conducting polymer based materials such as PANI-ES/Cloisite 20A nanostructured composite, acrylic acid (AA) doped PANI polymer, N-substituted conducting polyaniline polymer, DL−PLA/PANI-ES composites, poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) based polyaniline composite, and inorganic acid doped polyaniline are sucessfuly synthesized using aniline/aniline hydrochloride as precursors in acidic medium. Particularly, AA based synthesised PANI polymer was found with higher solubility The spectroscopic, thermal stability, enthalpy of fusion, room temperature DC conductivity and temperature dependent DC conductivity measurements with and without magnetic was carried out with as-synthesized materials. The FTR/ATR−FTIR spectra indicated the presence of different functional groups in the as-prepared composite materials. The UV−Visible absorption spectroscopic analysis showed the presence of polaron band suggesting PANI-ES form. The Room temperature DC conductivity, temperature variation DC conductivity (in presence and absence of magnetic field), and magnetoresistance (MR) of as-prepared conducting polyaniline based were analysed. The highest room temperature DC conductivity value was obtained from H2SO4 doped based composite materials and all prepared conductive composites were followed ohms law. The low temperature DC conductivity was carried out in order to study the semiconducting nature of prepared materials. The Mott type VRH model was found to be well fitted the conductivity data and described the density of states at the Fermi level which is constant in this temperature range. From MR plots, a negative MR was observed, which described the quantum interference effect on hopping conduction. We discuss different gas analytes i.e., NO2, LPG, H2, NH3, CH4, and CO of conducting polymer based materials.

Este livro é o resultado de minha pesquisa de doutorado em Antropologia, que concluí no ano de 2017, pela Universidade de Brasília (UnB). O tempo transcorrido de lá para cá mostrou que o tema da pesquisa foi uma escolha feliz, pois vem ganhando visibilidade e relevância dentro e fora do ambiente acadêmico e acompanha a ascensão de uma nova e estimulante fase do movimento indígena no Brasil, em que jovens acadêmicas/ os assumem de vez o protagonismo das lutas históricas de seus povos. O estado de Roraima, em que realizei o trabalho de campo, está entre as referências necessárias para qualquer pessoa interessada em conhecer os direitos indígenas, as lutas pela retomada do território ancestral e, especificamente neste caso, em como os povos indígenas vêm se apropriando da educação escolar, conquistando espaço nas universidades e construindo modos interculturais de manejar e transmitir conhecimentos, cruciais para lidar com os desafios contemporâneos. Além disso, devido a condições territoriais muito particulares, foi-me permitido acompanhar essas/ es acadêmicas/os tanto em seus ambientes de estudo, em Boa Vista, quanto nas suas comunidades no Lavrado roraimense. Esses trajetos de mão dupla mostram que existe uma dimensão territorial e local na interculturalidade, à qual eu não teria acesso se apenas um desses polos fosse abordado. A tragédia do garimpo nas terras indígenas – que vem acompanhada de efeitos igualmente trágicos, como as epidemias, o desmatamento e a violência, além do descaso do poder público – voltou a assolar com força os povos originários, destacando-se os efeitos deletérios sobre os Yanomami e Yekuana em Roraima, motivo de imagens e notícias que correm o país e o mundo, capazes de abalar até os mais indiferentes às causas indígenas. Tais problemas, no entanto, nunca deixaram de existir desde que essa região se tornou alvo da cobiça do Ocidente. Tampouco deixaram de ser objeto de preocupação das organizações indígenas do estado, que vêm denunciando esses crimes continuamente ao longo de décadas. Este livro, que inicia com o monumento ao garimpeiro, na praça do Centro Cívico de Boa Vista, e encerra com a aula magna de Davi Kopenawa na Universidade Federal de Roraima (UFRR), não deixou de prestar a devida atenção ao assunto, embora tenha sido escrito antes dessa última onda de invasões e destruição. Acredito, entretanto, que sua principal contribuição seja ter acompanhado, em um momento bastante oportuno, um dos fenômenos mais revigorantes do Brasil contemporâneo, tanto para as universidades e as ciências quanto para os movimentos indígenas e a política. Ao debaterem nas salas de aulas e nas assembleias comunitárias e ao desenvolverem suas próprias pesquisas e intervenções sobre assuntos como meio ambiente e saúde, alimentação e gestão territorial, língua e cultura, história e direitos sociais, as/os acadêmicas/os indígenas nos dão mostras de uma intensa diversidade étnica e epistêmica em constante reprodução e transformação. Novos e antigos saberes se juntam a projetos coletivos de autonomia e resistência, reforçando vínculos, comunidades e indivíduos, num ciclo virtuoso que beneficia não apenas os povos indígenas. São conhecimentos que, de certa forma, sempre estiveram ali, mas que escapavam à escala e aos sentidos das grandes instituições ocidentais. Graças aos esforços de mediação e tradução por parte dessas/es acadêmicas/ os indígenas, e graças à sua atenção (no sentido, também, de cuidado), isso está começando a mudar.
