Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2006.
"June 2006."
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 51).
In logistics, freight can be consolidated over time (temporally) or over space (spatially). This thesis presents a simulation model to evaluate temporal and spatial consolidation rules. The model is the result of a research project to analyze freight consolidation options for a large industrial company. The research project focused on the company's freight imported from China to the US, and the model presented in the thesis is structured to represent a typical import logistics network. The results section of the thesis presents a method for evaluating consolidation rules. The results recommend temporal consolidation of two weeks at the origin port and temporal consolidation of less than one week at the factory for the company's shipments from China to the US. This consolidation policy offers total network cost savings of 24% over the base case, an immediate ship policy.

Li, Min-Chung. "Thermoplastic composite consolidation." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40036.

Full text
Abstract:
Fabrication of high-quality composites from thennoplastic prepregs requires careful selection of the processing cycles so that intimate contact at the ply interfaces is achieved resulting in the formation of strong interply bonds and the process-induced residual stress is minimized to ensure superior mechanical performance. The void formation and the consolidation mechanism were studied experimentally. A refined model was developed to relate the processing parameters of pressure, temperature and time to the interply intimate contact of thermoplastic composites. The model was developed by integrating a prepreg surface topology characterization with a resin flow analysis. Both unidirectional and cross-ply lay-ups were modeled. Two-ply unidirectional laminae fabricated from graphite-polysulfone and graphite-PEEK prepregs and [0/90/0]T laminates were consolidated using different processing cycles. Optical microscopy and scanning acoustic microscopy were used to obtain the degree of intimate contact data. Agreement between the measured and calculated degree of intimate contact was good. A finite element model was developed to analyze residual stresses in thermoplastic composites by combining a plane-strain elasticity analysis and a temperature-dependent matrix properties. The residual stress model takes into account the mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficients and the crystallization shrinkage of the matrix. [O₁₀/90₆]T graphite-PEEK laminates were manufactured at different cooling rates to verify the model. The induced residual thermal defonnations were measured by a shadow moire system. The model accurately estimated the out-of-plane displacement of the non-symmetrical laminates.

Tse, Dorothy. "Schema and memory consolidation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5545.

Full text
Abstract:
The traditional view of systems memory consolidation is that it is a gradual process that takes place over days or weeks. Within this approach, the hippocampus (HPC) is thought to be involved in the rapid encoding of specific events, whilst neocortex is thought to be involved in slow learning. An idea posited recently is that systems consolidation can occur rapidly if an appropriate “schema” into which the new information can be incorporated has been previously created. Using a hippocampaldependent paradigm, rats were trained to learn a schema involving 6 flavour-place paired-associates (PAs). Once the schema was acquired, relevant new information then became assimilated into extra-hippocampal regions and rapidly became hippocampal-independent. Building upon this foundation and the PAs schema paradigm, this thesis has explored several aspects of the neurobiology of schemas in animals. The first part of the thesis examined the importance of a relevant schema in new information processing. Rats were trained in both a consistent and inconsistent schema. In the consistent schema, rats could learn new PAs in a single trial; however, in the inconsistent schema, rats failed to learn the new PAs as they had not established an appropriate schema that could facilitate rapid learning. The second part of the thesis investigated the role of hippocampal NMDA receptors and dopamine receptors during encoding of new PAs. Bilateral hippocampal infusion of either the NMDA receptor antagonist D-AP5 or the D1/D5 dopamine receptor antagonist SCH23390 before encoding of new PAs resulted in impaired memory tested at 24 hr. This result suggests that the encoding of new PAs is dependent upon NMDA receptors in the HPC and also that dopamine is involved in the modulation of encoding new PAs. The final chapters of the thesis attempted to identify the extrahippocampal regions in which these new PAs are integrated with the schema during encoding. To identify the regions that may be involved, immediate early genes (Zif268 and Arc) were used. In a group of cortical structures, including the prelimbic cortex, there was significantly higher Zif268 and Arc expression when encoding 2 new PAs compared to the reactivation of previously learned (original) PAs or the encoding of 6 new PAs. These findings indicate that the prelimbic cortex may be critical for rapid assimilation of new information into a pre-existing schema. Finally, the last experiment in the thesis investigated this finding using bilateral microinfusions of either the AMPA receptor antagonist CNQX or the NMDA receptor antagonist D-AP5 into the prelimbic cortex. Infusions of CNQX and D-AP5 resulted in poor learning of the new PAs in the schema task. This indicates that parallel encoding of new PAs occurred in the prelimbic cortex and the HPC. The experimental results presented in this thesis suggest that the prelimbic cortex, in particular, plays a crucial role along with the HPC during encoding of new information in rapid memory formation.

Abstract:
Extensive research has shown that sleep supports memory. Newer work suggests that wakefulness can also benefit retention of new information. However, the exact mechanisms which govern memory consolidation in sleep and wake are largely unknown. The implementation of new technologies, which draw on these natural memory processes, allows some insight into their characteristics. This work aims at elucidating some aspects of memory consolidation processes in the realm of sleep and wake. Firstly, we train novel non-words, a material previously indicated to benefit from sleep-associated consolidation, with explicit and implicit methods to determine whether the implicit learning (via the Hebb repetition task) would facilitate lexical integration independently of sleep. The results reveal that lexical integration of novel words is contingent on a good level of explicit training, followed by a consolidation delay with sleep. We speculate that sleep-associated consolidation may be mediated by the degree of overlap between new and already known material. To further capitalise on these findings, we test whether applying non-verbal cues during sleep can improve learning of novel words and their integration within the lexicon using Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) paradigm. Our results indicate that reactivating novel lexical representations in sleep improves their consolidation and facilitates their recall. However, the lack of lexical integration observed suggests the need for future research. Finally, based on recent evidence that quiet wakeful rest can result in comparable memory increases to sleep, we explore the consolidation during awake state using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). We found that applying tDCS to the right occipital-parietal site enhances memory for a list of words as compared to no stimulation. The findings imply that memory consolidation during quiet wakefulness can be manipulated externally, which may direct future research. Nevertheless, the exact neuro-correlates of memory consolidation in quiet wake are yet to be fully investigated.

Abstract:
Consolidation settlement analysis is an essential part of the design process for suction caissons. However it is a complex task since soil volume important for settlement analyses is directly affected by the installation process. Consolidation settlements have been found to be the critical design criterion in several subsea developments, adequate and correct analysis is therefore vital. The FEM code PLAXIS has been used to evaluate the reconsolidation process after completed installation of the suction caisson. Emphasize has been placed on studying the shear strength increase with time along the skirt walls. During consolidation dissipation of excess pore pressures result in higher effective stresses. Consequently the modeled undrained shear strength increases. However the increase is small compared to the expected increase in shear strength due to the set-up phenomenon. To account for the deviation an adjusted simulation procedure incorporating incremental increase of friction angle in the interface zones has been suggested. The results were found to be reasonable with respect to final consolidation settlements and development of mobilized shear strength with time.Adequate modeling of the changes in the interface zones adjacent to the caisson walls during consolidation is vital for correct prediction of long term settlements. Modeled undrained shear strength with time have huge impact on the analysis results due to different mobilization of the surrounding soil. Appropriate evaluation of soil structure interaction is essential to assess the reliability of the analysis. Taking into account changes of the soil volume important for settlement analysis is also vital. A simple physical model test has been performed. Due to delays and relatively short test period the results were inconclusive. However the importance of considering short term set-up effects has been underlined by recorded resistance and physical observations in the field.

Ultrasonic Consolidation (UC) is a solid state additive manufacturing process which fabricates three-dimensional objects by ultrasonically joining metal foils together, layer-bylayer, to form a solid part. A wide range of materials can be used to fabricate parts by UC and products with complex internal geometry can be generated by shaping the crosssection throughout the build using Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) milling. As a result of its ability to embed various secondary materials and fibres in metal matrices, UC has emerged as a potential method of fabricating multi-functional materials and structures.

Abstract:
The issue of accounting for goodwill has caused considerable concern to accountants and academics. For over 100 years there has been diversity of views as to the nature, recognition and measurement of goodwill. Such diversity of views has contributed to the adoption of a variety of accounting practices for goodwill, which has lead to attempts to regulate practice by accounting professions in the Anglo-American world. The research conducted involves a literature review to identify the concepts and definition of goodwill and the criteria for its recognition and measurement. the investigation will then concentrate upon goodwill arising on consolidation of the financial statements of a group of companies. Major accounting practices will be examined, along with the requirements of the australian and mojor overseas professions on the issue. The findings of a study of listed Australian companies which investigated the accounting policies adopted for goodwill on consolidation before and after regulation of the issue and which sought views upon some of the conceptual issues involved are reported and discussed. Implications of the research for the Australian accounting profession will be addressed, and recommendations will be propsed together with a description of future research opportunities.

This thesis describes the design and implementation of machine learning algorithms and real-time recommendations within EWall, a software system used for individual and collaborative information management. In the EWall workspace, users collect and arrange cards, which are compact visual abstractions of information. A significant problem that often arises when humans try to collect information is information overload. Information overload refers to the state of having too much information, and it causes difficulty in discovering relevant information. When affected by information overload, the user loses focus and spends more time filtering out irrelevant information. This thesis first presents a simple solution that uses a set of algorithms that prioritize information. Based on the information the user is working with, the algorithms search for relevant information in a database by analyzing spatial, temporal, and collaborative relationships. A second, more adaptive solution uses agents that observe user behavior and learn to apply the prioritization algorithms more effectively. Adaptive agents help to prevent information overload by removing the burden of search and filter from the user, and they hasten the process of discovering interesting and relevant information.

Abstract:
Since the nineties, the stock market environment has experienced significant changes affecting the organization and structure of these markets. This has led to strategic moves in mergers and alliances at a national as well as at an international scale. The aim of this thesis is to better understand this phenomenon and analyze its impact on the future of stock markets considered as any operational firm seeking to maximize its profits. To achieve this, and after a theoretical analysis of this phenomenon, we focused on the case of merger of the four European stock markets giving birth to Euronext. Our goal is to study the merger and its potential effect on the volatility and liquidity of these markets. The results obtained confirm the assumption that the merger is beneficial to merging markets in terms of liquidity and volatility. Note however that the expected benefits depend on the size of the securities, on the market studied, its importance and its degree of integration with other financial places before their effective consolidation

Abstract:
The virtualization of computing resources has given rise to cloud computing. More recently, container-based lightweight virtualization has become increasingly popular. Containers offer performance isolation comparable to that of virtual machines, but promise better resource consolidation due to their flexibility. In this thesis we highlight performance isolation losses assumed to be guaranteed to an active container. These losses occur during consolidation, i.e. when the unused memory of an inactive container is transferred to a new container that starts. However, in a non-virtualized environment, this memory consolidation scenario does not result in a drop in performance among the most active processes. We therefore propose, as a first step, to measure the memory activity of containers using state-of-the-art metrics. Then, to ensure the isolation of the most active containers during memory consolidations, we modify the behavior of the Linux kernel in order to reclaim the memory of the containers defined as being the most inactive by the metric. In a second step, we propose another method for estimating the memory activity of containers based on a global clock of memory events. This method is more reactive than the previous one because it seeks to protect containers with the most recent memory activity

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis deals with the study of soil composites that are constructed by combining regions of soft clay and granular materials in various spatial configurations. The underlying basis for the work stems from the practical application of the results of the research to offshore land reclamation practices. Due to depletion of local coarse-grained soil sources and the high cost of imported granular fill, the use of dredged and excavated marine clay has become the preferred source of materials in reclamation activities. A common reclamation technique involves placing dredged clay lumps directly on top of other layers; these lumpy fills contain large initial inter-lump voids with the result that the fills experience substantial compression purely due to the closure of the void space. A practical solution therefore is to fill the void space with a granular soil to enhance the load-carrying capacity and to minimize the settlements of the reclaimed fills.
In this research a coordinated experimental investigation was undertaken to examine the consolidation behavior of composites fabricated using a number of spherical and disk-shaped clay inclusions placed within an artificial granular medium (ballotini). The results of this experimental research program indicated that the volume fraction, shape, configuration and the constitutive properties of both the clay inclusions and the granular component are all important factors that could affect the mechanical response of the soil composites. A computational scheme, validated using the results of the bench-scale experiments, was used to analyze the response of an idealized composite lumpy fill subjected to self-weight stresses, surcharge and a load applied through a rigid footing. The computational results indicated that the consolidation behavior of the composite lumpy layers can be significantly influenced by the volume proportion, location and configuration of the clay inclusions interspersed within the granular fill. The incorporation of the constitutive behaviors of the soil components, used in reclamation activities, into such a computational analysis could assist engineers in designing reclaimed fills where the least ultimate settlement occurs within the shortest time.

Abstract:
The consolidation behaviour of gassy soil has been studied in a programme of experimental and theoretical research. This research is of particular importance to the offshore geotechnical industry as the presence of gas in the seabed can have a dramatic effect on the material properties of a marine sediment. Initial numerical modelling based on existing unsaturated soil theory combining the gas and the water phase into a compressible fluid in the pores of compressible soil skeleton failed to simulate the soil behaviour previously observed experimentally at Oxford. Therefore, there was scope for further study in this field. Chapters 2 to 4 describe the experimental preparation, consolidation technique and experimental results of the two series of tests on artificially prepared gassy soil samples. The results of these tests indicated that the gas appeared to be affected by the total stress rather than the pore water pressure, with the saturated soil matrix outside the gas voids being controlled by the consolidation stress. Chapter 5 presents the one-dimensional numerical modelling of the experimental results. Poor simulations were again made using compressible fluid theory. Treating the gas as compressible solid inclusions embedded in a saturated soil matrix, however, resulted in excellent simulations of the observed pore water pressures and settlements. Chapter 6 attempts to explain the results of the experimental and numerical modelling in terms of elastic and plastic soil behaviour. This includes the introduction to the double compressibility model in which the deformation behaviour of the saturated matrix is governed by changes in consolidation stress, whereas that of the gas is governed by changes in total stress. Chapter 7 presents the development of the governing gassy soil consolidation equations under both plane strain and axisymmetric conditions. Chapter 8 describes the approximation of the governing consolidation equations using the Galerkin finite element method in terms of nodal displacements and pore water pressures. The resulting finite element approximation is subsequently formulated for rectangular elements under plane strain and axisymmetric conditions in Chapter 9. The remainder of the thesis describes the structure of the finite element model DCFEM2 and the constitutive relationships that are required for such a model. The code is verified with existing analytical solutions and then is used to simulate the observed gassy soil behaviour under laboratory and field conditions.

Smith, Pieter Retief. "A contingency view of consolidation systems." Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/74/.

Full text
Abstract:
A consolidation system is a type of an accounting information system that aims to facilitate the consolidation process of organisations that are comprised of a collection of entities, but that are required to produce one set of consolidated financial statements. Contingency theory postulates that organisational sub-systems should be designed in accordance with the contextual variables and that performance will result if a match is achieved between these contextual variables and the characteristics of the sub-systems. The aim of this research is to explain variations in the performance of the consolidation system of listed companies in terms of the relationships between a contingency variable and the characteristics of the consolidation system. The contingency variable that was used by this research is the extent of company decentralisation, while the characteristics of the consolidation system are integration; formalisation; and sophistication. The performance of the consolidation system has been measured by means of the number of accountant days that are required to complete the consolidation at the financial year-end. The quantitative data was collected by means of self-completion questionnaires. Four hypotheses were assessed by means of Pearson correlation coefficients and a research model was evaluated by means of a structural equation model. The qualitative data collected by means of semi-structured interviews provided a more in-depth view of the manner in which consolidation systems are used at an organisational level. It was shown that organisational decentralisation is positively related to consolidation system integration, sophistication and formalisation. It is contended that the findings of this research provide some support for contingency theory‘s central tenet of no universally appropriate consolidation system. The structural equation model that was developed fits the quantitative data very well, but the results were not entirely consistent with theoretical expectations, with only the system integration shown to influence the resources that are required to complete the year-end consolidation. This research extended contingency theory to this relatively new type of system and provided practitioners with evidence regarding the type of consolidation system that is appropriate to different organisations.

Abstract:
Textile composite materials are of increasing interest not only in the automotive and aerospace industries, but also in other fields such as in the sporting and the marine sectors. However, textile composite materials are not always easy to form and consolidate, and defects such as voids, fibre displacements or wrinkling can inhibit the mechanical performance of the final component. Current tendencies in the textile composite industry focus on predicting such problems through the use of software packages for composite forming, such as PAM-FORM (ESI Software) and PATRAN Laminate Modeler (MSC. Software Ltd.). However, these packages are in their infancy, and so further work is needed to validate their results. This thesis is concerned with the manufacturing of components from textile composites, and addresses the effect that process parameters and deformation have on the consolidation of the component. A simple vacuum forming process is chosen because process parameters are easily controllable and complicated components can be produced at a reasonable cost. A consolidation model is proposed, which predicts the level of void content of a component as a function of the processing parameters, based on experimental data. The validity of the model is assessed by comparison between predictions and measurements, which were correlated with mechanical property' measurements to illustrate the effects of processing on subsequent performance. A combination of theoretical models is proposed to predict the effects of void content and in-plane deformation on mechanical properties. Finally, an automated strain analysis system used in the metal forming industry is adapted to analyse components formed from composite materials and parameters such as fibre angle, extension ratios along the fibre direction and change in thickness on demonstrator components are measured. These measurements are used to validate deformation simulations based on draping algorithms.

In this research, soil consolidation is explored in a comprehensive analytical and experimental study. The pore pressure development and dissipation for clay at its liquid limit under one-dimensional compression was investigated using the mid-plane pore pressure measurements. In general, the Terzaghi’s theory of consolidation predicted the pore pressure dissipation and the percent consolidation accurately as long as the sample was in a normally loaded state. For a preconsolidated state however, the results obtained by Terzaghi theory are doubtful. Coefficient of consolidation for smaller pressures varied during consolidation, and although the soil was in a fully saturated state for relatively high pressure increments, the pore pressure developed was less than the applied pressure. Then, the effect of different pressure increment ratios on one dimensional consolidation tests has been studied. The secondary compression effects have been founded to increase as the pressure increment ratio is reduced. Consolidation of a clay layer delimited between sheets with small permeability was also investigated in this study. The consolidation theory of compressible soils usually assumes drainage-free boundaries. This change in boundary conditions at the drainage surface necessitates the use of an approximate technique for solution of the governing partial differential equation. In this study, the solution was obtained by using the Galerkin Method and compared with the “free drainage” case. As expected, the consolidation in the case of restricted drainage proceeds at a much lower rate. The compression consolidation behavior of trampled clays in a semi- saturated state was also analyzed in this research program. It is generally known that the type and energy of compaction bring about deviations in the soil structure and hence, in its engineering properties. Therefore, in the experimental phase of this study, soils were prepared by different trampling efforts and also by different compaction methods. Finally, a reasonably realistic theory of soil consolidation has been proposed and the effect of variable permeability and compressibility on the consolidation behavior was investigated followed by a mathematical treatment of the behavior. Subsequently, laboratory consolidation tests with mid-plane pore pressure measurements were conducted on different kinds of clay.

Abstract:
It is increasingly recognized that sleep following learning is beneficial for human memory performance. However, not all memories benefit equally from sleep. Here, we asked whether enhancing the salience of a learning task would augment overnight memory consolidation of a 3-D task. Our prior work has demonstrated that consolidation of this spatial memory task is associated with dreaming of the task (1). Thus, we additionally expected that enhanced task processing during sleep would increase the degree to which participants reported dreaming about the learning task. In the present study, we manipulated task salience by adding two specific manipulations to the maze – a monetary reward (Reward) and an audio performance feedback (Feedback). Contrary to our hypothesis, we found that Reward impaired overnight learning of the task. Feedback on the other hand, increased slow wave sleep (SWS), which was associated with a significant improvement in performance measures. Given the nature of the Reward version of the task, it appears that this feature may have actually induced more stress than motivation and therefore impaired learning in a cortisol-dependent mechanism.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the process of democratic consolidation in Thailand between 1997-2006.  The country’s consolidation of democracy has been hampered by continuous cycle of coup d’états which throughout history have halted the overall process of democratization. The coup of 2006 is one example of those instances where the democratic consolidation process was interrupted.   The method used to examine the years of 1997-2006 was theory consuming by qualitative text analysis where the data used to assess the situation was qualitative. The theory of democratic consolidation was offered by Juan J. Linz and Alfred Stepan. The theory’s prerequisites were applied to examine the case study of Thailand. The theory chosen were hoped to give a plausible explanation for the failure of democratic consolidation in the case of Thailand. It was also hoped that it could assess the overall quality of Thai democracy and possibly give a better insight in why military coups seem to be a reoccurring phenomenon in the case of Thailand.

Abstract:
Abstract Educational leaders must operate in a complex political world that places a premium on skills and strategies involving consensus building, negotiations, and reciprocity. This dissertation is about the leadership struggles and tensions inherent in a school consolidation process. The principals highlighted in this study represent the leader of a metropolitan school which is closed and consolidated with another school in the same school district. The school district employs a defined and planned process to address many issues inherent in a school consolidation like guaranteed placement of displaced teachers in schools of their choice. I examined the experiences of three principals during the course of the school consolidation to determine if there are any advantages in using a pre-planned consolidation to ensure the success of the consolidation process. My experiences as a principal involved in a school consolidation experience without a defined and pre-negotiated consolidation protocols was used to draw contrasts when interview data was analyzed from the three school principals. To guide my data collection and analysis I used a conceptual framework based on the work of Mead (1934), Husserl (1965), Blumer (1969), Stryker (2002) and Merleau-Ponty (2004), Interpretivism with a case study paradigm based on the work of Hancock and Algozzine (2006), Creswell (2003), Yin (2003) and Miles and Huberman (1994) to guide my study which was aimed at understanding the experiences of school principals during a school consolidation. The initial findings of my study indicated that the experiences for most stakeholders impacted by a consolidation were consistent with those found in the literature concerning other consolidation experiences. There was some minimal reduction in the perceived levels of uncertainty and anxiety of staff members concerning their employment status. The principals had certain assignments related to the logistical planning and management of resource security and allocation removed from their agenda, but leadership experiences remained fraught with uncertainty and a sense of trial and error in navigating through the processes required for a successful consolidation experience. This study provided several insights that may be useful to school principals in managing and seeking appropriate assistance from district level leadership to improve the probability that the level of success in a school consolidation may affect various stakeholder groups impacted by the experience. The findings discuss several implications regarding how school principals and school districts may consider the overall impact of a school consolidation on their students and their stance regarding equity and social justice for all the school's communities. Finally, this study provides several recommendations for policy and educational practice.

Abstract:
This thesis presents novel techniques for addressing the problems of continuous change and inconsistencies in large process model collections. The developed techniques treat process models as a collection of fragments and facilitate version control, standardization and automated process model discovery using fragment-based concepts. Experimental results show that the presented techniques are beneficial in consolidating large process model collections, specifically when there is a high degree of redundancy.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The experimental alloy powders of 1% Mg treated Al-8Fe-1.8V-8Si were obtained by air atomization. The screen analysis of powders was made by sieves with meshes ranging from +90µ
m, +63µ
m, +53µ
m, +45µ
m, +38µ
m to -38µ
m. Unreinforced and TiC particulate reinforced specimens were produced by hot dynamic consolidation which is known as hot swaging. Powders were canned into pure aluminium tubes of about 10cm length and 2.2cm diameter. Single action and double action cold pressing were applied to some of the specimens before hot dynamic compaction and some specimens of canned loose powder were also processed. The diameters of the hot compacts were decreased in a two step process by swaging machine (rotary dynamic compaction). During the first step, after canning, compacts had been held at 480°
C for 1 hour and swaged, thus the diameter decreased from 2.2 cm to 1.97cm. Secondly, the compacts were reheated to 480º
C and held for 1 hour and further swaged to obtain a diameter decrease from 1.97cm to 1.54cm. Generally, the microstructures of the hot dynamic compacted specimens were homogeneous except the specimens produced by using -63 µ
m +53 µ
m powder size fraction. By SEM study, a vanadium free cross like AlFeSi phase was observed near the outer regions of the specimen. No considerable coarsening of the dispersoids was observed after hot dynamic compaction of +63 µ
m size powder. For -90µ
m +63µ
m size powders, maximum flexural strength values obtained by three point bending test increased by addition of 10% TiC to from 152 MPa to 285 MPa at double pressed condition and from 76MPa to 190MPa at loose powder canning condition. By hardness tests, it was observed that hardness values were inversely proportional to powder size and increased from 107 BHN to 147 BHN for corresponding powder size range of +90µ
m to -38µ
m. Porosity values obtained by Archimedes principle for single pressing varied between 0.03 % and 1.10% for corresponding size range of +38µ
m to +90µ
m. No considerable porosity was detected for double pressing. Porosity values of canned loose powder were between 3% and 10% for the range of +38 µ
m- +45 µ
m. By X-Ray analysis, it was revealed that Mg2Si reaction did not form after artificial aging of specimens up to 8 hours at 190°
C. Also, x-ray analysis of individual powders and specimens obtained by hot dynamic compaction of the same powder showed that
after hot dynamic compaction, the alloy powders were stable and no new phase formation was detected for +63µ
m size. DSC examination of the specimens produced from +90µ
m, +63µ
m, +53µ
m, -38µ
m powder confirmed the microstructure stability up to the melting temperature. Melting temperature was detected to be in the range of 560°
C-575°
C by DSC.

Venter, Daniel Jacobus Lodewyk. "The consolidation of forecests with regression models." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020964.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this study was to develop a dashboard for the consolidation of multiple forecasts utilising a range of multiple linear regression models. The term dashboard is used to describe with a single word the characteristics of the forecasts consolidation application that was developed to provide the required functionalities via a graphical user interface structured as a series of interlinked screens. Microsoft Excel© was used as the platform to develop the dashboard named ConFoRM (acronym for Consolidate Forecasts with Regression Models). The major steps of the consolidation process incorporated in ConFoRM are: 1. Input historical data. Select appropriate analysis and holdout samples. 3. Specify regression models to be considered as candidates for the final model to be used for the consolidation of forecasts. 4. Perform regression analysis and holdout analysis for each of the models specified in step 3. 5. Perform post-holdout testing to assess the performance of the model with best holdout validation results on out-of-sample data. 6. Consolidate forecasts. Two data transformations are available: the removal of growth and time-periods effect from the time series; a translation of the time series by subtracting ̅i, the mean of all the forecasts for data record i, from the variable being predicted and its related forecasts for each data record I. The pre-defined regression models available for ordinary least square linear regression models (LRM) are: a. A set of k simple LRM’s, one for each of the k forecasts; b. A multiple LRM that includes all the forecasts: c. A multiple LRM that includes all the forecasts and as many of the first-order interactions between the input forecasts as allowed by the sample size and the maximum number of predictors provided by the dashboard with the interactions included in the model to be those with the highest individual correlation with the variable being predicted; d. A multiple LRM that includes as many of the forecasts and first-order interactions between the input forecasts as allowed by the sample size and the maximum number of predictors provided by the dashboard: with the forecasts and interactions included in the model to be those with the highest individual correlation with the variable being predicted; e. A simple LRM with the predictor variable being the mean of the forecasts: f. A set of simple LRM’s with the predictor variable in each case being the weighted mean of the forecasts with different formulas for the weights Also available is an ad hoc user specified model in terms of the forecasts and the predictor variables generated by the dashboard for the pre-defined models. Provision is made in the regression analysis for both of forward entry and backward removal regression. Weighted least squares (WLS) regression can be performed optionally based on the age of forecasts with smaller weight for older forecasts.
