Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to evolution, but in the form that man gave it. It is assumed that unnatural conditions of its flow were created in cities and near them, which changed the logic of its functioning, but this has become especially noticeable over the past hundred years, during which the entire planet was included in the orbit of our influence. This made it possible to unite the Earth into one whole, but at the same time it transformed the work of natural selection, turning it into an artificial one that concerns everyone and everything, without any exceptions. Accordingly, three planes of its unfolding are considered, namely: geography, the biosphere and our species, in each of which the same dynamics of its implementation can be traced. From all this, it is concluded that today there is no wild and inherent in the whole history of his version, but the one that prevails is that we, consciously and not, planted on this space object with all its inhabitants. This new version of it is proposed to be called urban revolution - by the name of the site of its unfolding and everything that is associated with it, but it is repeatedly emphasized that the essence of the process has remained the same, the scene where it is carried out has simply been transformed. It is intended for both specialists and the general public.

Ellison, Aaron M., and Lubomír Adamec. Introduction: what is a carnivorous plant? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779841.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The approximately 800 species of carnivorous plant together provide a classic example of convergent evolution. The known carnivorous species and genera represent nine independent angiosperm lineages. They are united by a suite of five essential traits that together make up the ‘carnivorous syndrome:’ (1) capturing or trapping prey in specialized. usually attractive, traps; (2) killing the captured prey; (3) digesting the prey; (4) absorption of metabolites (nutrients) from the killed and digested prey; and (5) use of these metabolites for plant growth and development. Although many other ‘paracarnivorous’ plants have one or two of these traits, only plants that have all five of them that function in a coordinated way can be considered true carnivorous plants.

Abstract:
Cinema is a record of the Anthropocene, and not just because it has recorded the changing planet. Celluloid is already embedded in the geological record. Bill Morrison’s film Dawson City: Frozen Time tells the story of how nitrate films were buried in the Yukon permafrost and unearthed decades later. Considered hazardous material, the nitrate film reels are also our cultural heritage. We can read the film as a lamentation that humanity and its culture are impermanent and its archives in jeopardy. But when we consider that so many films have been dumped, burned, and buried, we may be struck with the melancholic possibility that humanity and its culture will never disappear from the earth. In time, the human artifacts on the planet and the traces of humanity’s artificial life worlds will be the nature upon which future life forms create their worlds and rituals of hospitality.

Abstract:
This book explains how the Community plant variety rights system works and provides guidance regarding the field of law relating to the Basic Regulation and other implementing regulations. It gives an idea of how the grant system works, the advantages of Community plant variety rights, and the aspects to be considered in exploiting and defending. It also explains the mechanisms in the Basic Regulation on how infringements of Community plant variety rights should be dealt with, including certain enforcement systems of the EU Member States. This book analyses major aspects that are considered of practical relevance in infringement proceedings under the applicable national law. It elaborates how the case law is limited in comparison with patent infringement proceedings throughout the EU Member States.

Pila, Justine. The Invention and Plant Variety. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199688616.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter seeks to define the terms ‘invention’ and ‘plant variety’ as used by European and UK legal officials particularly. To that end, the nature of the objects identified by the legislature and courts as inventions and plant varieties is considered, as well as the nature of the objects excluded from protection, whether with reference to the requirement for an invention or plant variety or on other statutory grounds. The chapter also considers the law governing patent and plant variety right entitlement, and its implications for legal conceptions of the invention and plant variety. In its conclusion, the legal understandings of inventions and plant varieties are presented as answers to the questions identified in Chapter 3 concerning the categories and essential properties of the subject matter in question, their method of individuation, and the relationship between and method of establishing the existence of each individual subject matter and its tokens.

Full text
Abstract:
The tide is the greatest synchronized movement of matter on our planet. Every drop of seawater takes part in tidal motion, driven by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun. Tides: A Very Short Introduction blends clear explanations of well-known tidal phenomena with recent insights into the dynamics of the deep ocean and coastal seas, considering the tide’s nature and causes, its observation and prediction, and unusual tides and their relevance. It explains the importance of ocean tidal mixing as a key part of our planet’s climate-control system and for enhancing biological productivity. It also considers the effects of tidal processes beyond our own planet on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.

Full text
Abstract:
As Chapter Eleven explains, sex in plants couldn’t be considered until the anathematization of sex in scholarly discourse ended and naturalism in illustrated herbals revived, and these changes occurred following the influx of Greek learning during the “Twelfth Century Awakening.” The poetry of the troubadours and the natural theology of St. Francis laid the foundation for the revival of naturalism. Scholars like Roger Bacon and Albertus Magnus reintroduced naturalism in herbals, and artists like Albrecht Dürer, and Hans Weiditz pioneered realistic plant portraits. In the first general treatise on botany since Theophratus (De Natura Stirpium [1536]), Jean Ruel adopted such terms as “conception” “parturition” “gestation” and “fetus.” To account for conception, he explained that the wind acts as husband to the plant: “after the wind Flavonius begins to blow … all vegetal things are married to it.” This “plants-as-female” paradigm was poeticized in “The Romance of the Rose.”
