Abstract. Understanding human phenomena requires an in-depth analysis of the interconnectedness that arises from a particular culture and its history. Subjectivity as well as a collective subjectivity emerges from human productions such as language and art in a specific time and place. In this article, we explore the role of African-based popular music genres such as bomba and plena as ways of negotiating narratives about Puerto Rican society. Popular music encompasses diverse meanings. Puerto Rican folk music’s subjectivity provides narratives that distance Puerto Ricans from an individualistic cosmovision, allowing us to understand the social and political dimensions of this complex Caribbean culture. The events of the summer of 2019, which culminated in the ousting of governor Ricardo Rosselló from his position, illustrate how music can foster social change.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s song “Despacito” shattered numerous records to become one of the most successful Spanish-language songs in U.S. pop music history. Declared 2017’s “Song of the Summer,” the “Despacito” remix featuring Justin Bieber prompted discussions about the racial dynamics of crossover for Latin music and Latina/o artists. However, little attention was paid to the ways that “Despacito”’s success in the Latin music market demonstrated similar racial dynamics within Latin music, especially in the song’s engagement with reggaeton, a genre originally associated with Black and working-class communities. This paper examines the racial politics that surround “Despacito”’s success in both the Latin mainstream and the U.S. mainstream. We argue that “Despacito” reinforces stereotypes of blackness in the Latin mainstream in ways that facilitate reggaeton’s crossover. In turn, Fonsi himself becomes attributed with similar stereotypes, especially around hypersexuality, that represent him as a tropical Latina/o racialized other in the United States. Through close readings of media coverage of “Despacito” alongside the song’s music video, we argue that it is critical to look at “Despacito”’s success in both the Latin mainstream and the U.S. mainstream in order to examine the complex and contradictory process of crossing over.

The traditional genre of plena shares cultural threads with West Africa, Spain, and indigenous (Taíno) culture. Commonly known as El Periodico Cantado (the singing newspaper), plena songs give updates on what people are feeling and current events effecting the community. The plena song Que Bonita Bandera (What a Beautiful Flag) is explored for its potential uses in elementary and secondary general music classes.

We examine the history and circumstance in the life of Puerto Rican composer Gonzalo Núñez (1850-1915) during the period from 1900 to 1903. During his second sojourn in Paris he maintained a close personal relationship with Rubén Darío and Amado Nervo, joined by other poets, writers and artists. An extensive on-site research work, conducted in various European, North American and Caribbean libraries and archives, permitted us to gather documentation about the nomadic life of the musician in Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Europe and North America. We show that Núñez’s unpublished manuscript Los arcanos de la música, housed in the Archive of Music and Sound of Puerto Rico, is the main source of two important articles by Rubén Darío.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Physical inactivity and mineral imbalances greatly contribute to morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Barriers for engaging in physical activity and adhering to the hemodialysis diet have been reported predominantly with white participants from countries other than Puerto Rico. Therefore, this study’s aims were to explore the barriers and facilitators that Hispanic adults with end-stage renal disease encountered for engaging in physical activity and adhering to the hemodialysis diet. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Three focus groups were conducted among 19 adults living with ESRD who received services from a renal center in Puerto Rico. Sessions were recorded, transcribed, and coded first using inductive methods. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: The presence of fatigue, lack of acceptance of the renal condition, and lack of knowledge of appropriate exercises for patients in hemodialysis were the most frequently reported barriers to engage in physical activities. Cost of the renal diet, limited availability of the renal diet products, the restrictive nature and the lack of Puerto Rican taste of the renal diet, and inadequate educational materials were the most frequent barriers to adhere to the hemodialysis diet reported by the sample. The most commonly reported facilitators to engaging in physical activities were having a positive attitude, opportunities for group exercises, and listening to Hispanic music while exercising. Health benefits, family support, having financial resources, availability of community resources, and having willpower were the most commonly reported facilitators to adhere to the hemodialysis diet. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: We identified a number of culturally relevant individual, interpersonal, institutional, and community-related barriers and facilitators to physical activity and adherence to the hemodialysis diet in patients with ESRD living in Puerto Rico. Evidence-based solutions to overcome these barriers and strategies for enhancing these facilitators should be addressed in future studies aimed at increasing the level of physical activity and increasing adherence to the hemodialysis diet in patients with ESRD living in Puerto Rico.

The symposium and festival (usually held in October) took full advantage of Mojácar's vibrant August atmosphere, which attracts many visitors from around the world for the picturesque beauty of the fifteenth-century town and its proximity to the Mediterranean. This year the symposium, dedicated to the memory of harpsichordist Rafael Puyana, hosted speakers and performers from Australia, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and Venezuela.

AbstractDuring the 1950s and ’60s, many composers began exploring the possibilities provided by commercially available magnetic tape recording and electronically produced sound. In Latin America, the most successful early electroacoustic studio was hosted at the Centro Latinoamericano de Altos Estudios Musicales (CLAEM), part of the Torcuato Di Tella Institute in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This article chronicles the eight years of existence of CLAEM's Laboratorio de música electrónica (1964–1971), and its role in the training of composers hailing from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and the United States. This historical account of pioneering Latin American electroacoustic music provides insight into the aesthetic and technical developments that earned the laboratory at CLAEM a place in the regional and transnational world of contemporary music making and demonstrates the crucial role of locality in the adoption, consumption, and rearticulation of international musical models.

Having won two Grammy Awards, attracted considerable attention in the English-language media, and appeared in several Hollywood films, Latin popular singer Rubén Blades has been much discussed as a crossover, that is, as an artist who, with a well-defined audience (in this case Hispanic), produces work that appeals in addition to another audience (here the audience for mainstream American popular music). El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, in contrast, continues to appeal to its traditional Hispanic audience and remains the undisputed leader in popularity with that audience. A comparison of a piece by El Gran Combo with one by Blades suggests ways of thinking about the relationship of both to their audiences and to each other and ways in which musicology might approach such questions in specifically musical terms. Blades is seen not to be crossing over from one audience to another but to represent transformations in his Hispanic audience, which is itself crossing over to become increasingly imbued with Anglo culture while remaining rooted in its own traditions.

This study aimed to explore the perceived barriers to physical activity among college students Study Design: Qualitative research design Eight focus group discussions on 67 college students aged 18-24 years (48 females, 19 males) was conducted on College premises. Data were analysed using inductive approach. Participants identified a number of obstacles to physical activity. Perceived barriers emerged from the analysis of the data addressed the different dimensions of the socio-ecological framework. The result indicated that the young adults perceived substantial amount of personal, social and environmental factors as barriers such as time constraint, tiredness, stress, family control, safety issues and much more. Understanding the barriers and overcoming the barriers at this stage will be valuable. Health professionals and researchers can use this information to design and implement interventions, strategies and policies to promote the participation in physical activity. This further can help the students to deal with those barriers and can help to instil the habit of regular physical activity in the later adult years.

The journal and letters written by Edward Bliss Emerson in the Caribbean provide exciting, idyllic, and at times troublesome visions of that region, but also insights on the life of a sick, poor, religious and brilliant young man. Emerson’s reflections on life in St. Croix remain unquoted, and although brief excerpts from the Puerto Rico portion of the journal appeared in print in 1959 and 1991, his more extensive text supplements the contemporary publications, which only praised the colonial administration. A third, and equally important location, is the implicit base for his perspective – New England in the period of Jacksonian populist democracy. The journal presents terse reminders of daily activities, mixed with extensive descriptions of landscape, exotic civic and religious observances, business and social customs, fruits, music and sports, with personal meditations on Edward’s readings, his search for health, and his adaptation to a new life away from his family, with little prospect of wealth or longevity. His letters include periodic reckonings of the benefits and disadvantages that he saw to life in Puerto Rico. This diverse eyewitness account represents an important resource for researchers of Caribbean society and culture.

This article is the result of years of experience and contact with the teaching of the Portuguese of Brazil and with the reflections derived from a postdoctoral research. In this research, there is relevant information about the teaching of the Portuguese of Brazil as a foreign language and the various needs presented by former students from Puerto Rico. The questionnaire was used to investigate if there was a problem among the alumni community. The problem presented by the former students was the lack of a playful course in Brazilian music, which, in turn, needs to integrate all the essential components for the advanced learning of the Portuguese, such as: linguistics and its variants and society and culture. The needs found in the investigation were compiled based on the responses of students from Portuguese of Brazil in Puerto Rico. Neuroscience data revealed the indisputable connection that exists between the two cerebral hemispheres: the logical and the holistic in parallel. To solve the problem with the creation of the Brazilian musical sociolinguistics course to meet the needs of future students of the Portuguese program was one of the objectives of the work. It is also intended that the research serves as a scientific basis for the implementation of the course.

En menos de un lustro, Puerto Rico ha vivido un conjunto de experiencias sociales que han exacerbado las paradojas y contradicciones de lo que ha sido el modelo de desarrollo del país, anclado en nuestra centenaria subordinación colonial a los Estados Unidos. ¿Cuál ha sido el devenir de la investigación musical en tiempos de capitalismo del desastre y de acentuadas políticas de austeridad? Para acercarnos a responder dicha pregunta, este artículo propone una mirada histórica a los escritos e investigaciones sobre música en vínculo con sus contextos de enunciación. ¿De qué modos han sido escuchadas las prácticas musicales populares por parte del Estado y de la intelectualidad letrada y qué rol han jugado las narrativas sobre la música en los debates socioculturales y políticos del país? ¿Qué incidencias han tenido estos modos de escucha en el desarrollo de las políticas culturales y educativas? ¿Cuál ha sido el papel de los propios músicos en la producción de conocimientos sobre las prácticas y tradiciones musicales, así como en la configuración de esquemas valorativos en torno a éstas? ¿Cómo la coyuntura actual está transformando los modos de escucha y qué nuevos acercamientos a la producción de saberes musicales se perfilan en el horizonte?
