Abstract:
The Franck–Condon (FC) factor is defined as squares of the Franck–Condon (FC) overlap integral and represents one of the principle fundamental factors of molecular physics. The FC factor is used to determine the transition probabilities in different vibrational levels of the two electronic states and the spectral line intensities of diatomic and polyatomic molecules. In this study, new analytical formulas were derived to calculate Franck–Condon integral (FCI) of harmonic oscillators and matrix elements (xη, e−2cx, and e−cx2) including simple finite summations of binomial coefficients. These formulas are valid for arbitrary values. The results of formulas are in agreement with the results in the literature.

Potential curves for the X1?g+ and D1?u+ states of three diatomic silver isotopomers, 107Ag2, 107Ag109Ag and 109Ag2, were determined from the best available molecular constants by the Rydberg-Klein-Rees method. From these potentials, Franck-Condon factors and band-origin wave numbers were computed, and the reliability of the obtained values was verified by comparison with the observed band strength distribution and the measured band origin positions in a previously recorded D-X spectrum. The ratios of the Franck-Condon factors to those of corresponding isotopic bands were found to be very close to unity, revealing only a very small isotopic effect on the Franck Condon factors of Ag2 D-X bands. The isotopic shifts of the calculated band origins agree well with previously measured displacements of band heads.

Abstract An Observing System Experiment (OSE) has been performed to investigate the effectiveness of dropwindsonde observations and a sensitivity analysis technique on a typhoon track forecast. Using dropwindsonde observations for Typhoon Conson at 1200 UTC 8 June 2004, which are derived from Dropwindsonde Observation for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region (DOTSTAR), four numerical experiments are conducted, which are different only in terms of the number of dropwindsonde observations used in a data assimilation system: (i) no observation is assimilated; (ii) all observations are assimilated; (iii) observations within a sensitive region as revealed by a singular vector method at the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) are assimilated; and (iv) observations outside the sensitive region are assimilated. In the comparison of the four track forecasts, Conson’s northeastward movement is expressed in the second and third simulations while in the first and fourth experiments Conson stays at almost the same position as its initial position. Through the OSE, it is found that DOTSTAR observations had a positive impact on the track forecast for Conson, and that observations within the sensitive region are enough to predict the northeastward movement of Conson, indicating that the JMA singular vector method would be useful for the sampling strategy of targeted observations like DOTSTAR.

Abstract:
Byblis Salisb. is a small genus of carnivorous plants with adhesive traps in the Lamiales family Byblidaceae Domin. There are two perennial species (B. gigantea Lindl. and B. lamellata Conran & Lowrie) with restricted ranges in Western Australia, where they experience a Mediterranean climate. The critically endangered B gigantea is endemic to the Swan River drainage area, now entirely within the Perth metropolitan area, whilst B. lamellata is restricted to the coastal region North of Perth. The genus also contains six currently recognized annual species (B. aquatica Lowrie & Conran, B. filifolia Planch., B. guehoi Lowrie & Conran, B. liniflora Salisb., B. pilbarana Lowrie & Conran, and B. rorida Lowrie & Conran) which inhabit the tropical and semi-arid regions of Northern Australia. The genus also extends to the island of New Guinea (Lowrie 2013; McPherson 2010). All species are found in substrates which are very nutrient-poor (Lowrie 2013; McPherson 2010) and share habitats with representatives of other genera of carnivorous plants (particularly Drosera, but also Utricularia and Nepenthes). Although there are important morphological differences between the Byblis species, all share the same basic structure in that they produce stems from which radiate filiform leaves. Another feature common to all species is the ability to produce fast concentrated growth in response to seasonal rainfall. (Bourke, pers. comm.). It has been observed on many occasions that all Byblis species play host to Miridae bugs from the genus Setocoris (Bourke, pers. comm.). A mutualistic relationship has been proven to exist between another viscid plant genus Roridula and a different genus of the family Miridae, Pameridea (Anderson & Midgley 2003). A similar relationship is strongly suspected in Byblis (Lowrie 2013; Cross et al. 2018).

Algorithms and methodologies for the calculation of Franck–Condon integrals are reviewed. Starting from the standard approach based on the Cartesian representation of the normal modes and the use of Duschinsky's transformation and recursion formulas, methods for treating large displacements of the equilibrium positions and anharmonic and non-Condon effects are considered. Finally, focusing attention on problems arising from the use of recurrence relations, some of the proposed solutions are critically reviewed along with new alternative approaches.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Microphysical and thermodynamical features of two tropical systems, namely Hurricane Ivan and Typhoon Conson, and one sub-tropical, Catarina, have been analyzed based on space-born radar PR measurements available on the TRMM satellite. The procedure to classify the reflectivity profiles followed the Heymsfield et al (2000) and Steiner et al (1995) methodologies. The water and ice content have been calculated using a relationship obtained with data of the surface SPOL radar and PR in Rondonia State in Brazil. The diabatic heating rate due to latent heat release has been estimated using the methodology developed by Tao et al (1990). A more detailed analysis has been performed for Hurricane Catarina, the first of its kind in South Atlantic. High water content mean value has been found in Conson and Ivan at low levels and close to their centers. Results indicate that hurricane Catarina was shallower than the other two systems, with less water and the water was concentrated closer to its center. The mean ice content in Catarina was about 0.05 g kg-1 while in Conson it was 0.06 g kg-1 and in Ivan 0.08 g kg-1. Conson and Ivan had water content up to 0.3 g kg-1 above the 0ºC layer, while Catarina had less than 0.15 g kg-1. The latent heat released by Catarina showed to be very similar to the other two systems, except in the regions closer to the center.

The Franck-Condon factors are more intense, particularly for the ?? = 0 bands, for all the systems examined here. Thus the bands of the molecules are expected to be present in sunspot spectra, SC-stars, cool M-giant stars and other prominent astrophysical sources.

This article discusses innovations and evolution in the optics industry. Local firms teamed with Monroe Community College to hold events that introduced high school students to optics . Paul Ballentine, who analyzes technology opportunities as deputy director of University of Rochester’s Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences, sees plenty of upside. Light-based systems are continuing to grow, but Rochester’s optics community will have to reinvent itself to thrive. The Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster has morphed into New York Photonics, with additional clusters in Buffalo, central New York, Albany, and Long Island. It now represents hundreds of optics and photonics companies throughout the state. Paul Conrow, who was teaching physical sciences at Rochester’s East High School, is now recruiting 10th graders and showing them Rochester’s optics industry. Conrow presented the idea to the district superintendent, who had been principal in the only school in America with a student eyeglass program. He introduced Conrow to teachers at a sister high school where members of the cluster were helping to plan a precision optics program.

Abstract:
Patrick Conroy, the secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL) from 1941 to 1951, was not someone who gave up easily. As a friend observed, the Scottish-born coal miner was a committed trade unionist whose “moral certitude was admirable and… one of his great strengths.” In late 1942, however, Conroy seemed ready to call it quits on the CCL's campaign to win a national collective-bargaining policy in Canada. Since its inception in September 1940, the Congress, which represented most of the industrial unions in the country, had pushed hard for a comprehensive labor policy like the National Labor Relations or Wagner Act in the United States, which protected and advanced the rights of workers. But the Liberal government of Prime Minister Mackenzie King repeatedly refused to move beyond a turn-of-the-century conciliatory framework that emphasized moral suasion and compromise. In late 1942, when a regional organizer asked Conroy whether a collective-bargaining policy appeared likely in the future, the CCL leader replied: “We do not feel it worthwhile to raise people's hopes when the record of the federal government is as it has been.”

The potential energy curves for the ground state of diatomic H2 and N2+ molecules are constructed techniques using the five-parameter H-H function. The estimated dissociation energies are 4.61 ± 0.1 eV and 8.70 ± 0.20 eV for H2 and N2+ respectively. The estimated D0 values are in good agreement with literature values. The r-Centroids and Franck-Condon factors for the bands of C1∏u → X1Σ+g of H2 and A2∏u1 → 4Σu+ X of N2+ molecules have been determined. The Franck-Condon factors are evaluated by the approximate analytical method of Jarmain and Fraser. The absence of the bands in these systems is explained.

Abstract:
A classical frequency-modulation principle is used to calculate the dipole spectrum of a two-freedom oscillator. Its two motions are assumed adiabatically separable; the frequency of motion along the fast coordinate is assumed to have a weak linear dependence on the slow coordinate. At high temperatures, the dipole spectrum of the fast motion, as found by this method, agrees quantitatively with a result based on evaluation of the Franck–Condon factors for the corresponding quantum-mechanical transition. It is suggested that the frequency-modulation approach might be especially useful in studying hydrogen-bond networks whose classical oscillations may be chaotic. In May 1859, a beautifully printed card urging Revd Michael Condon to visit ‘La Plus Belle Dame de Greenock’ dropped through his letterbox. He had just arrived that day in his new parish of Cartsdyke. Given the prejudice encountered, the appalling living conditions, and the endless demands on him and his fellow clergy, their resistance to such charms seems remarkable. The Irish were allegedly ‘liars, blasphemous, ignorant, lying, thieving etc.’ And that was a Scottish priest speaking. Not surprisingly Condon could write to a Scottish priest. ‘I cannot wonder that being treated like a dog by your confrere, I should be classed among dogs by yourself.’

Byblis sp. nov. aff. gigantea also has a chromosome number of 2n = 18, whereas B. filifolia Planch., B. rorida Lowrie & Conran and B. aquatica Lowrie & Conran have counts of 2n = 16. This gives base counts of x = 8 for the B. liniflora complex and x = 9 for the B. gigantea complex, with B. liniflora as a tetraploid.

Abstract:
Knowledge of the Franck–Condon factors (FCFs) and related quantities is essential to understand and to estimate many important aspects of the astrophysical molecules, such as kinetics of the energy transfer, radiative lifetimes, band intensity, and vibrational temperatures. In this view, we propose a new analytical formula of the Franck–Condon integral for two-dimensional harmonic oscillators taking into account the Duschinsky effect. This method is based on the use of the binomial expansion theorem and the Hermite polynomials. With the formula obtained, the FCF of any transition can be computed independently. In this study, the method for FCF calculations was applied to the NO2molecule.
