Abstract:
De Saussure (1916:35) held that the nature of language-systems consists in what they have in common with all other semiotic systems. This thesis aims to provide an answer. It starts with the ‘parts of speech’ and uses the verb-noun distinction to separate language into a calculus and a protocol. The Principle of Connection is proposed as a structure-forming capacity and defined as a fixed hierarchical mental structure. Language is defined as a ‘way of normalising meaning through signalling’. The linearity of language enforces three types of notational elements: those having no relation, one relation (either direction) and two relations (both directions). Quine’s (1960:83f) ‘quality space’ is combined with the Gestalt notion of figure-ground into a schematic semantics of perception based on the necessarycontingent and the intrinsic-extrinsic distinctions. The Principle of Connection is shown to be the logical operation AND with its operands evaluated as identical, similar, different or contrary. The schema translates into the ontological categories of Universal Grammar (UG) giving as possible types of lexeme: Identifier, Qualifier, Quantifier and Connective. The validity of the schema is verified successfully against the language of the Predicate Calculus (PC). The schema further expresses both the whole-of-parts and the part-of-a-whole perspective as well as the analytic and synthetic method. ‘Grammar’ is analysed through a discussion of the possible errors of protocol and grammar proper is shown to consist in the cultural variations of UG. The basic structure of English is found to be (Quantity) (Quality) Essence (Relation). An analysis of verbs is presented on the basis of the schema. Lastly, the prototypical connectives are given as IS, AND, BUT and OR and it is shown how all others are troponymic extensions in a radial network centred on these four.

Abstract:
Social connection is an essential human need. Personal connections exist at a variety of depths and within different types of relationships. Small daily choices determine the strength of those connections and their impact on our well-being as individuals and as a community. Modern society and technology have altered the speed and channels of connection, increasing communication but decreasing meaningful connection. It is critical to understand how the methods of communication affect the depth of connections. Through a series of participatory graphic design projects, I analyze the strengths and weaknesses of one-on-one, small group and community connections within an established taxonomy of the levels of connection, to identify the factors that contribute to strong social relationships.

Abstract:
Electrical connectors are the blocks that connect solar panels together. Whenever a photovoltaic plant commences, the main discussion goes around on solar panels, inverters, charge controllers, etc. But the topic of connectors is usually hardly discussed. Connectors in a photovoltaic system can definitely contribute to improve the overall performance of the system, provided that importance is given while selecting the connectors. The electrical connectors used in photovoltaic systems can be connected in two possible ways. Connectors can be connected either in a pure-connection or in a cross-connection. Male and female connectors from the same brand results a pure-connection (P-C). Male and female connectors from two different brands results in a cross-connection (C-C). There have been discussions in photovoltaic, electrical connector markets and international solar events regarding the risks involved, losses and consequences due to a cross-connection. The main reason behind cross-connections is the unawareness of the installers in knowing the difference between a pure-connection and a cross-connection. Even though the installers are aware of this difference, they are not aware of the consequences of cross-connections. Multi-Contact, a leading electrical connector manufacturer of MC4 photovoltaic connectors affected by the counterfeit products of MC4, due to the sudden boom in the solar market during 2011-12. With the help of TÜV Rheinland, Multi-Contact conducted couple of tests namely temperature increase test and accelerated stress tests to understand the disadvantages of cross-connections. This thesis tried to replicate the tests performed by Multi-Contact in an attempt to understand the test results by using connectors that are used in the Swedish market. Performing temperature increase test and accelerated stress tests on most commonly used connectors in the Swedish market is the main aim of this thesis. The first test, gives an understanding of the temperature variations across various connector sets (four connector sets from various manufacturers used in this thesis) and the latter tests helps to understand the quality of the contact resistance of these connector sets. The four connector set manufacturers used in this test were Multi-Contact (MC), Weidmüller (WM), Blussun solar (BSS) and PBM. The quality of contact resistance of a connector is directly related to the quality of the connector set. During the 20 minutes of the temperature increase test, the connector set from WM performed better than its competitors in the P-C. Whereas, the MC-BSS connector set had performed well in the C-C. The connector type of male MC and female BSS showed its dominance throughout the test. Unfortunately, no conclusions were able to be drawn from this test results due to insufficient information about the test procedure. From the results of accelerated stress tests, the C-C set from MC outperformed its P-C counterpart. All ten connector sets used in this project passed the standard and qualified as connectors with good quality contact resistance. Therefore the best results out of only a P-C connector set does not seems to be completely true. With the standard used in this thesis, it is quite difficult to judge the quality of connectors. Rather than saying a P-C is superior and a C-C is inferior in terms of quality, there is a need to come up with a new method to evaluate the quality of connectors. Matching the connectors based on their tolerances could be a potential solution to the mismatching problem in connectors.

Abstract:
Humans used to be a part of nature, now we have become a force of nature. Our culture is based on infinite growth on a planet with finite resources. Its obvious that we need to change our lifestyle, in a radical way.Its not enough to drive a prius, buying organic food, or as an architect draw buildings with green roofs. We need a radical change of our lifestyle because we are facing radical change of our climate. Our impact is so great, occurs with such a speed and on a global scale that we have set of a mass extinction. My project consists of two parts.1: To apply a system, based on the unique properties of fungi, today.I want a site that is dead and polluted. 2: A site that will work as a testing ground, preparing us for a very harsh future. Alberta, CanadaOil sand mines the size of United Kingdom. Where a brutal mining process leaves a destroyed landscape behind. I see this landscape as a good preview of the future of our planet.I have formed a system that uses this extreme condition as an asset. The system will not only heal the landscape, it will also produce essential products such as food, fuel and material. All from fungi. The system is a network of fungi farms, growing through the land in patterns inspired by how fungi grows.

Abstract:
Connections in wood have been investigated and advanced ever since the ground-breaking work of Johansen in the early nineteenth century. Nevertheless, not much investigation has been undertaken on the existence of load-displacement path dependency in a sheathing-to-framing connection. Herein, a sheathing-to-framing connection is investigated in relation to displacement path dependency. This work uses 3D Finite Element beam-on-foundation models of an Oriented Strand Board (OSB/2) sheathing nailed to a C24 wood framing, to study possible strategies to numerically simulate the displacement path dependency. The models are used to study if non-linear elastic or elastic-plastic embedment properties of an annular-ringed shank nail in the wood-based materials bring about the path dependency using Connector elements in combination with different material models in the FE software Abaqus. Numerical results are compared with corresponding experimental test results of the connection together with the Eurocode 5 approach. The outcome of the numerical study both; confirms the existence of displacement path dependency and shows that this property in the connection can be described by plasticity properties in nail, sheathing material and the wood framing.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to understand more deeply the process and nature of interpersonal connections among leaders in the workplace. Specifically, this study was guided by the primary inquiry question, “How do leaders experience interpersonal connections in the workplace?” A total of 20 leaders ranging from entry to executive levels were studied. This study employed the qualitative method of constructivist grounded theory. The objective of grounded theory is to generate, inductively, a theory about basic social and psychological processes. As a researcher, employing the constructivist grounded theory methodology provided me the opportunity to inquire into the experiences of interpersonal connections of leaders in the workplace. As a result of the inquiry, I generated a theory that provided more information about how leaders behaved in and the depth of their interpersonal connection experiences. The significance of this study is that it furthers relational leadership discourse and provides more awareness about how leaders connect and behave in their experiences of interpersonal connections. The study also sheds light on interpersonal connections outside the workplace.

Abstract:
Växjö university has together with Södra developed a new green-glued laminated beam, which to be used in a building system. To make a product of the beam it is desired to also develop a building system based on the beam. An important part of such a building system is the connections. The main aim of the thesis was to design a new beam-to-beam connection in for the new green-glued laminated boards. This thesis is about to develop and test a new connection for a beam-to-beam connection in the building system. The requirements set on the connection was that it should be used in an office building with a beam length of 6 m, the connection should be fast to assemble and invisible. The report thoroughly describes the conceptual design, the development and test of the connection. Five different types of connections were designed in the conceptual design phase. One of these connections fulfilled the requirements and was taken to the development and testing phase. Three versions of the connection were tested. The report describes how the green-glued laminated beams with the connections were tested in a testing machine until the failure occurs. The developed connection could fulfil the requirements set on the connection. One version of the connection was even stronger than the green-glued laminated beams.

Abstract:
Culture and a Connection In the Spanish province of Asturias, many homes built in the16th and 17th centuries are constructed of dry-stacked stone and large timbers for floor joists, rafters, decking. They are topped with large, irregularly shaped roof slates. Alongside many of these homes stands a rectangular granary called a cabazo. The cabazo, similarly constructed, is a stand-alone structure about twenty feet tall, six feet wide and twenty feet long. The main portion, (the storage area), stands ten feet off the ground atop two large, tapered columns. The upper level is typically separated form the lower level by a massive flat, horizontal stone that protrudes past the face of the columns. This one stone is the floor of the granary. The height above the ground and the continuous flat stone keep the food dry and safe from animals. The stone of the columns, quarried from nearby hills, consists of pieces as small as driveway gravel and as large as shoeboxes. Even though they were built of varying size stones the builders created large, extremely flat vertical planes. Two beams, roughly hewn from chestnut logs, span one column to the next, and support the storage area and roof. These curious structures, born from utility and perched on the hills of the Asturias countryside, have become local cultural icons. A record of visible human participation is left in the traces and details made by the tools of the workmen who built these cabazos. The traces make the connection between the structure and the hand of man, an immediate expression of the granary’s essence and thus an integral part of the local culture. The industrial age introduced powerful machinery into the tool set of the designer. Extruded steel and reinforced concrete enable designers to create monumental structures within relatively short periods of time. Although the advent of these methods signaled the loss of the record of human participation, the hand of man was also lost in the repetition and redundancy found on the factory floor. The scale of the effort was hidden and diluted by the machinery used to construct the modern forms. The absence of visible traces of the men who built the structures creates a disconnect between humans and the built environment. It is not feasible to go back to creating homes by stacking stones together or using hand tools to construct office buildings, but the materials that are produced by factories can become a new source of raw materials for designer and builder in a way that engages the craftsman. I believe that through the careful use of technology and materials, as well as the inclusion of the craftsman, an environment can be created that extends beyond formal appreciation and expresses a deeper connection between man, culture, and the built environment.

Abstract:
Master of Science
Department of Architectural Engineering
Kimberly W. Kramer
In structural steel connection design, simple shear connections are one of the most common connection types utilized. The industry, especially from the side of the engineer, tends to lean toward using Double Clip Angle Connections as the default standard for simple shear connections. A double clip angle connection is a connection consisting of two angles transferring the shear forces from one member to the next either through bolts or welds. The design of Double Clip Angle Connections is efficient and the connections themselves are easy to fabricate. However, benefits to utilizing other types of shear connections exist. Many of these benefits are seen in the fabrication shop or during erection and construction. This is especially true of single shear plate or shear tab connections when applied to open structure design. Shear tab connections consist of a single plate that transfers the shear forces from one member to the next with bolts or with welds. The design of shear tab connections can be a more involved process than the design of double clip angles. Sometimes the shear plate or shear tab has to be longer than is typical. This is called an extended shear plate connection. These extended shear plates can bring other variables into the design that typically don’t occur with Double Clip Angle Connections such as bending of the plate or the need for multiple bolt columns. However, with proper planning and detailing, the benefits and savings experienced in the fabrication or construction phase may outweigh what can be seen as a more laborious design task. The purpose of this report is to identify the possible benefits achieved in using each of these connections, highlight the differences in the design approach for each, and use a study model to compare the outcome of using one connection over another in the design of a typical open structure. Double clip angles are typically the most efficient approach when speed of design and simplicity of fabrication are the desired outcomes. However, shear plate or shear tab connections have the potential to provide safer erection alternatives and materials savings if used in appropriate ways and with the right applications.

Abstract:
The impact of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on relational behavior is a topic of increasing interest to communication scholars (McQuillen, 2003; Tidwell & Walther, 2002). One of the most interesting issues that CMC raises concerns the impact of CMC on relational maintenance and development. Using dialectical theory, social exchange theory, social information processing theory, and the hyperpersonal perspective as theoretical frameworks, this study used quantitative and qualitative analyses to identity potential effects of CMC on relationships. Study 1 (n=317) examined the effects of CMC on relational closeness, satisfaction, and social support. Study 2 (n=196) explored the reasons individuals provide for privileging computer-mediated forms of communication, and the perceived effects of using CMC in relational communication. Results indicated that quality of CMC predicted increased perceptions of social support and relationship satisfaction. Results further suggested that CMC enabled participants to manage more effectively relational tensions of autonomy-connection and openness-closedness. Specifically, individuals used CMC to retain higher levels of conversational control, and to maintain greater numbers of relationships with decreased levels of investment. This paper concludes with a discussion of implications and directions for future research.

Abstract:
Women faculty members have been reported rating their level of knowledge and experience in using technologies lower than male faculty members. A closer examination revealed that women faculty members were likely to use technologies that fit into their pedagogy, met students' learning styles and needs, and facilitated their interactions with colleagues and students. So women faculty's choices of particular technologies can be assumed to reflect their particular instructional beliefs and perspectives, represented as a connected approach to learning and teaching. Gender alone is inadequate to explain women faculty's use of technology. The purpose of this study was to explore women faculty's understanding of teacher-student, student-student, and student learning-life connections and how technology affects these connections. A theoretical framework called positionality is used, which approaches women not solely from their biological or psychological attributes but also from the contexts in which they are situated. The results of the study suggested that women faculty members exhibited a positional understanding of the teacher-student, student-student, and student learning-life connections. A positional consciousness was reflected in their use of strategies to promote these connections. Technology played a positional role in women faculty's effort to create connections. Women faculty's views and practices of "connection" and "technology" are better understood by the contexts in which they are situated rather than by their gender. Women faculty often assume multiple identities expressed from different positions within different contexts, which is reflected by the variations in their relationships with students, their different perceptions of their student relationship with each other, their different ways of promoting connections, and their different views and use of technology. Limitations of the current study, recommendations for future research, and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:
We consider the problem of using the real-time measurements of the network elements for connection admission control on QoS aware networks. Our objective is to study the measurement process and determine the real-time utilization of a link, and use these measurements to determine the admission of new flows into the network, while providing statistical guarantees on the QoS ensured for the existing admitted flows. First we survey the vast amount of existing literature in the field and identify the components of a measurement-based admission control system, and the various factors which affects the performance of an algorithm. We use the ns-2 simulator to simulate some of the proposed (though not all) algorithms and test the performance of these algorithms for various arrival processes at the connection level. We use the results from these simulations to verify the performance claims of the various algorithms, and use the performance tuning parameters to find optimal performance regions. We study the buffer dynamics at the burst level and analyze the loss caused by admitting excessive flows. Our work extends from the existing literature in studying the effect of different arrival processes on the blocking probabilities of new flows and surveying an ad-hoc mix-and-match approach of the estimation technique and decision process to explore a higher performance benchmark.

Abstract:
A simplified procedure that results in a significant reduction of the computation time and effort in the design of single plate framing connections is presented herein. This simplified method is based upon the current design procedure which is applicable to partially restrained shear connections. A total of 140 steel beams with 700 analyses and 500 composite beams were used to develop the simplified method. Tables are provided for the design of most commonly used connections. The simplified single plate design is applicable for fully tightened 3/4, 7/8, and 1. inch A325 or A490 bolts used in either standard round or slotted holes, or snug tight A325 or A490 bolts in standard holes. These studies have led to a single table of the restraint design moments which greatly simplifies the design procedure.

Abstract:
We can`t imagine today`s world without modern technologies, but modern technology can`t work without connection channels. Therefore, this article is about different types of connection. There are a great number of connections: from simple cables that constructively consist of single copper conductor, to incredibly complex networks that allows to connecting an impressive number of electronic devices. They are divides into a two main groups: wired and wireless.

Abstract:
The great properties and clear form makes the circular hollow section (CHS) appreciated by architects. When connecting these sections today it is common to use gusset plates. The knifeplate connection where the gusset plate is inserted into a slot made at the end of a circular section, is the most used connection today. This type of connections is not seen as aesthetically pleasingby architects because of its abrupt cut of the CHS. An alternative for the knife-plate connection is the Crocodile nose connection (CN-connection). The benefits of the CN-connection is the absence of the abrupt cut and the protruding gusset plate, which makes it appreciated by architects. In this connection the CHS’s ends are tapered, which creates two semi-elliptical cuts at both sides of the member. On these cuts, appropriate plates arefillet welded. These plates are shaped and bended so that when they are welded in place, the orientation of the extending part is parallel to the member axis. A gap is made between the extending parts so that a gusset plate can be inserted and bolted together with the member. Four different specimens of the CN-connection are tested in order to find the best shape. Two specimens have a stiffener between the plates, at a small distance from the end of the CHS. The difference between the presence of a stiffener and the lack of it, is investigated. The results showed that the specimens with the connecting piece obtained a much higher ultimate load, up to 413 %higher. Two different angles of the CHS’s cut is also investigated in order to see the most appropriate bevelling angle. In this case the results showed that the specimens with the smaller bevelling angle obtained a higher ultimate load, up to 40 % higher. A check of the weld connecting the plates and the CHS is also performed. This check was made with an assumed calculation model. The results showed that the calculation model only was valid for the specimens without the connecting piece. The calculation model must therefore be enhanced, in order to work for all dimensioning cases.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to construct a conceptual map for thinking about family therapy in a recursive way. The axes used for this map are 1) the Taoist philosophy of change in the Chinese classic I Ching, and 2) the cybernetic epistemology of Gregory Bateson. Each is used to help explicate the other. The relational character of patterned change in the I Ching is explored in depth from five different perspectives. The first discusses the elusive and paradoxical subject of the Tao, the meta-pattern which interweaves stability and change, and connects all living systems in a dynamic recursive balance. The Tao is process, the context of all change, and is closely related to Bateson's notion of immanent Mind. The second perspective examines the nature of the relationship between yin and yang, the complementary opposites that are both distinct (separate) and mutually dependent (connected). The relation between connection and separation is the basis of the recursive balance of life and death, and is an important theme in therapy. The third perspective presents a model for the understanding of gradual development and sudden transformation as part of a cyclic process of completion. Like a plant going to seed, the maturation of a situation or relationship heralds both death and renewal. But such completion is only possible when there is a flowing connection between parts of the system. The counsellor uses various techniques for helping the family connect in ways which allow old patterns to disperse and new ones to emerge. There are some indications that the authors of the I Ching were directly influenced by the Chinese philosophy of music. The fourth perspective discusses this possibility in some depth and then turns to modern jazz theory as a means of characterizing the relationship between family and therapist, and of explaining the way change is introduced into the therapeutic system. The fifth perspective explains the nature of the I Ching's curious diagrams of change known as "hexagrams." Based on the relation between yin and yang, and illustrated with mantic, philosophical, and poetic phrases, hexagrams, in both structure and image, are metaphoric expressions of process and connection. The thesis concludes with a case-history of a dysfunctional family and a description of their changes In terms of the principles outlined in the previous chapters.

Abstract:
I investigate the lived experience, the actuality of responding to land as a painter. This thesis consists of intensive investigations in the field and further exploration in the studio, resulting in a body of paintings and drawings which form the exhibition. The exegesis explores theories and ideas surrounding the work. The psychological engagement between people, land and art is of major concern. The choice of place selected to paint and the subject matter of rocks is discussed. Painters who work outside or have painted at the same site are considered for comparison with my working methods or concerns. The selective view is intimate. The format of the image and the composition are discussed in terms of proximity and space. Consideration of the psychology of engagement with land and landscape painting, either as an observer or painter, is a major component of the research. This examination of human psychological development illuminates the origin of our sense of self and how we relate to the land on which we live. The premise of this enquiry is the idea that art and culture could reflect human psychological development. Do art objects contribute to cultural understanding of the relationship of person to environment? A phenomenological perspective is incorporated in this exploration of the interrelation of vision, perception and attention. Can the reality of experience be transferred into the art work? The deep attention to the landscape of Australian Aboriginal people serves as a cultural reference for these investigations. This study concludes that sentient consciousness involving responsibility for land is an open, effective way of perceiving and depicting landscape. Responsibility for land can be encouraged by the development of cultural ideas based around landscape and can be the result of feeling connected to land. Art can contribute to changes in attitudes to land.

Abstract:
The purpose of this exploratory, mixed method study was to examine factors in students‟ university experiences that affected their future alumni engagement with their university. A web-based survey instrument was administered to 1,139 University of Lethbridge bachelor‟s degree holders who graduated during the University‟s first 40 years (1967 to 2007). Results indicate that the foundation for alumni engagement is set early in the student experience and is particularly affected by the nature of the relationships the student has with the institution. Alumni who were engaged as students were more likely to become engaged alumni through volunteer or donor activity. The higher alumni rated their satisfaction with factors present in their student experience and alumni relationship, the higher the likelihood that they stayed connected with and demonstrated their commitment to their alma mater. Recommendations for further research and for designing student and alumni engagement strategies are provided.

Abstract:
In our current education system learning is organized as a series of sequential steps and the curriculum is constituted by a set of independent objects. Here students are not encouraged to make connections between subjects or between the subjects and their own personal lives. In this positivistic view of reality teaching is reduced to technique. This thesis is a reflection on the nature and importance of a more holistic and interconnected education. Using the concept of "non-linear learning" as an organizing principle, it outlines the various components of an alternative paradigm.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Connections are a vitally important part of any structural framework. Thisstatement may seem obvious, yet it is surprisinghow often insufficient attention is given to the design of this essential aspect of steelwork projects. This thesis concentrates on developing a specification for designing steel connections with the main emphasis on the practical and economical design of typical connections. The design methods of the specification are developed according to the new South African design code which is currently in draft form, namely SANS10162:Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel: Part 1: Limit States Design of hot-rolled steelwork - 2002. An object-oriented framework and associated graphical user interface for designing the connections are developed and implemented. The primary objectives of the implemented framework are: • Being generic in the sensethat it allows for easy addition of additional connection types, • To implement the design paradigm of the South African code, without fixing specific parameter values programmatically in the implementation and • To build on an existing architecture that allows for structural analysis, structural steel member design and distributed collaboration in the design process.

Guilherme, Alexandre. "Fichte and Schelling : the Spinoza connection." Thesis, Durham University, 2007. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2471/.

Full text
Abstract:
The influence of Spinoza on Post-Kantian Idealism has been acknowledged by virtually all commentators in the area. Much research on the influence of Spinoza on Hegel has been already carried out by many of Hegel's commentators in both the Continental and Anglo- American tradition, and Hegel himself wrote a great deal on Spinozism. Detailed research and study on the influence of Spinoza on Fichte and Schelling, however, is still to be carried out in the Anglo-American tradition; and this situation is in contrast to the current scenario in Germany, where much effort has been devoted to this topic. Commentators in the Anglo-American tradition acknowledge the influence of some of Spinoza's views on Fichte's and Schelling's respective projects but fail to provide a detailed account of this influence. This thesis will attempt to help fill in the gap in this area by providing a detailed study of the influence of Spinozism on Fichte and Schelling. This will be done by drawing parallels and by demonstrating similarities between some of their philosophical views, as well as referring to textual evidence where Fichte and Schelling acknowledge, overtly or not, their debt to Spinoza. This thesis is divided into three parts. In Part I I shall provide the context or background to this thesis. This part focus on the reception of Spinoza's writings in the Netherlands and Germany (chap. 1), the Enlightenment and Romantic movement as well as the Enlightenment crises (chap. 2), and Kant's attempt to solve the crises (chap. 3). In Part II and III I deal with Fichte's and Schelling's Spinozism respectively. Part II is divided into three chapters, which are entitled: "Metaphysics, Knowledge and Freedom" (chap. 4), "Theology and Religion" (chap. 5), and "Ethics" (chap. 6). Part III is also divided into three chapters, which are entitled: "From Kant to Fichte to Schelling: Spinoza's contribution to Absolute Idealism" (chap. 7), "Pantheism and God" (chap. 8), and finally "Deep Ecology" (chap. 9). Finally, in this abstract I find it important to draw the reader's attention to a few issues. My sympathies with, or antipathies to, the various positions taken by the authors I discuss will no doubt be apparent as the thesis unfolds. And it could be said that this thesis is primarily intended as an exercise in the history, influence and study of some conceptual views particular to Spinozism, and as such it shall be of great interest to metaphysicians. But in doing so this thesis will also set the background for a proper understanding of Fichte's and Schelling's philosophical systems - this is an important point as there is a tendency in philosophical and academic circles to 'box in' philosophical systems as if these systems were self-contained and bore no connection with previous philosophical systems; moreover, there is also a tendency in these circles not to appreciate the legacy of philosophical systems either. As such, this thesis aims to help correcting this situation insofar as Spinoza, Fichte and Schelling are concerned - but it can be also viewed as a template for similar research in connection to other philosophical systems. It is also intended that the interpretations of Fichte and Schelling in the light of their Spinozism, which I propose will be useful to other scholars in their attempt to critically appraise the writings of these important figures.

Abstract:
Medulloblastoma (MB) is the commonest intracranial childhood malignancy and despite recent advances, current therapeutic approaches are still associated with high morbidity and mortality. A novel molecular classification has recently been proposed for these tumours – WNT Group (best prognosis), SHH Group (intermediate prognosis), Group 3 (worst prognosis) and Group 4 (intermediate prognosis). BMI1, a transcriptional repressor of the Polycomb group genes, is overexpressed in MB, most significantly in those of Group 4 MBs. Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs) are morphogens belonging to TGF-β superfamily of growth factors, and are known to inhibit MB cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in vitro, and to inhibit tumour growth in vivo. Our team have recently demonstrated that Bmi1 regulates cell adhesion properties during cerebellar development through repression of the BMP pathway. The aim of this project is to assess whether BMI1 overexpression may contribute to MB pathogenesis through repression of the BMP pathway. Here we demonstrate that BMI1 knock down derepresses BMP pathway, and using a novel xenograft model of human MB of Group 4, we show that BMI1 controls tumour volume and intraparenchymal invasion. In in vitro assays on MB cell lines we show that cell adhesion and motility is controlled by BMI1 in a BMP dependent manner and that deregulation of extracellular matrix proteins are key mediators of this effect. Furthermore, we demonstrate that BMP treatment to BMI1 overexpressing MB cells reduces cell proliferation and invasion, suggesting BMI1 as a possible biomarker for those tumours that could benefit from treatment with BMP agonist small molecules.

Lieberman, Gary. "Securely Handling Inter-Application Connection Credentials." NSUWorks, 2012. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/215.

Full text
Abstract:
The utilization of application-to-application (A2A) credentials within interpretive language scripts and application code has long been a security risk. The quandaries being how to protect and secure the credentials handled in the main body of code and avoid exploitation from rogue programmers, system administrators and other users with authorized high levels of privilege. Researchers report that A2A credentials cannot be protected and that there is no way to reduce the risk of the inevitable successful attack and subsequent exploit. Therefore, research efforts to date have primarily been focused on mitigating the impact of the attack rather than finding ways to reduce the attack surface. The work contained herein successfully addresses this serious cross-cutting concern and proves that it is in fact possible to significantly reduce the risk of attack. This reduction of risk was accomplished through implementing a method of credential obfuscation which applied advice with concerns utilizing a composition filter. The filter modified messages containing the credentials as they were sent from the interpretive language script to the remote data store. The modification extracted credentials from a secure password vault and inserted them into the message being sent to the remote data store. This modification moved the handling of the credentials from the main body of code to a secure library and out of the reach of attackers with authorized high levels of privilege. The relocation of the credential handling code lines significantly reduced the attack surface and the overall risk of attack.

GRÖNKVIST, EMIL. "New bore pipe connection for Slotborer." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-192185.

Full text
Abstract:
Slotborer is a new machine prototype that is used for excavating platina in underground mines. To drill holes with desired depths there are several drill pipes that are bonded as the hole is drilled deeper with a threaded connection. This work have had the purpose of designing a new connection for these drill pipes as the thread design have shown to be problematic. A number of concepts were generated after which the most preferred, according to customer discussions and Pugh decision matrices, was chosen for further development and refinement. The chosen concept for development was a type of bayonet coupling and a more detailed 3D CAD model and analysis of the coupling strength were made. Analytical solid mechanics showed that the most heavily loaded parts of the coupling experienced effective Von Mises stresses of 230 MPa for normal drilling, 360 MPa for heavy drilling and 605 MPa for heavy back reaming. Contact pressures were analyzed with Hertzian contact theory and the maximum values of these were shown to be 2.6 GPa, 3.3 Gpa and 4.5 GPa for the respective load cases. An FE analysis made showed higher local effective stresses that was of the magnitude of 300 MPa, 500 MPa and 1200 MPa for the respective load cases. The conclusion of the concept development and analysis points out that the design is suitable for further detailed design.
