Norris, Pauline. "The Lettuce Connection : a re-examination of the association of the Egyptian god Min with the lettuce plant from the Predynastic to the Ptolemaic Period." Abstract:
Min was one of the earliest known Egyptian deities and his origins remain obscure but, because of his association with fertility and the kingship, he retained his importance from the Predynastic Period into the Roman era. Although his depiction as an ithyphallic, mummified male with a flail balanced above his raised right arm remained unaltered throughout, the overall iconography of Min did exhibit changes, notably with the introduction in the Sixth Dynasty of what is accepted as a lettuce plant resembling the modern Cos or Romaine cultivar of Lactuca sativa L. It is the association of Min with the lettuce plant that is the subject of this thesis. It is the received opinion in the literature that the plant was offered to Min, a fertility god, as an aphrodisiac. Apart from two seminal works that are over fifty years old, little research has been conducted into the association of Min with the lettuce. Much early research is in need of re-examination because of changes in social attitudes and research techniques and this the thesis seeks to redress. The aims of the research are to review the evidence for the lettuce plant in ancient Egypt and to re-examine the previously noted association of the god Min with a plant identified as lettuce. The study is primarily library and museum based and examines the history and nature of lettuce in ancient Egypt. The nature of 'aphrodisiac' is examined and the use of such substances in ancient Egypt is compared with modern usage. Min as a god of fertility is re-analysed and, finally, texts and Ptolemaic temple inscriptions are examined for evidence as to why and by whom lettuce was offered. The research results are applied to a study of Min as a god of fertility. The evidence indicates that lettuce was offered by the king to Min to ensure the fertility and regeneration of agriculture and of the king which would secure the continuation of his line and humanity. There is no evidence to suggest lettuce was offered as an aphrodisiac to increase the sexual desire of the god.

Pessaque, Sandrine. "L’Intelligence de Marguerite Duras. Vers la difficile reconquête du sensible." Thesis, Paris 4, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA040049.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis aims to examine the unique intelligence emerging in Marguerite Duras's works, and to showcase this, it encompasses a range of her writings including novels, plays, newspaper articles, scenarios and other essays. It takes into account the difficult heritage of the Shoah and Stalinism, and from the extreme dehumanisation that marked the 20th century, it questions itself on nihilism in relation to modernity, specifically the manner in which nihilism is likely to influence literature as it would appear that it is very much present in the Duras universe. The reflection doesn't just cover the historical aspect, it expands fundamentally into a philosophical dimension. The most important thing, however, is probably not so much to reveal the phenomenon but to try and understand how the works struggle to face the coming emptiness and therefore resists. From then on, anti-nihilism rises within literature and as a result, sensitivity becomes central. Indeed, a loss of sensitivity is observed when nihilism manifests itself, however, sensitivity is not just an indicator; it is rather the enabling principle to combat emptiness. With it, the cogito disappears suddenly and the encroachment, thought borrowed from Merleau-Ponty, appears. With it, intelligence shies away from the intelligible, admits contradiction and takes off. With it, desire, the expression of something beyond our control, establishes itself as the foundation of the human being, guaranteeing his humanity. With it finally, transcendence returns to immanence so that it becomes possible to consider metaphysics from the flesh

Abstract:

The context for this qualitative case study evaluation was a 400 member United Methodist Church in southwest Michigan. Incongruence existed between the congregants' claimed spiritual development and minimal supernatural manifestations. Significant instruction has not resulted in change. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement, and evaluate a leadership training. The hypothesis was that peer coaching is an effective method to accelerate spiritual intimacy as measured by hearing God. Data analysis revealed three themes related to hearing God: hindrances, helps, and hearing. Hindrances must be addressed through helps in order to hear.

Dileseigres, Angeline. "Diarylethenes used as molecular switches for the connection of gold nanoparticles." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023SORUS014.

Full text
Abstract:
Diarylethene molecules used as molecular switches are envisioned as components of molecular electronic devices. These photochromic molecules exhibit high thermal stability, resistance to fatigue, and switching efficiency. Nevertheless, the switching of most diarylethenes (DAEs) is asymmetric: their photocycloreversion reaction possessing a much lower quantum yield than that of their photocyclization reaction. A strategy to solve that asymmetric switching issue was tested, it consisted in connecting the diarylethene molecules to gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Indeed, gold nanoparticles exhibit both a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), very useful for the monitoring of the adsorption of the DAEs at the surface of the AuNPs, and a plasmonic nanoantenna effect. This nanoantenna effect, generating a large enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the close vicinity of the nanoparticle, was expected to increase the efficiency of the photocycloreversion reaction (its quantum yield), leading to a more symmetric switching. The switching of the dithienylethene (DTE) molecules was first characterized for the molecules alone in solution. Then, the functionalization of 28 nm gold nanoparticles deposited on ITO by the DTE molecules was monitored in situ by UV-visible spectroscopy. Switching measurement on the samples ITO/AuNPs/DTE were performed by UV-visible spectroscopy combined with an irradiation set-up. It resulted that for the diarylethene molecules chosen for this study connected to 28 nm AuNPs, although the switching capacity was preserved upon grafting on the AuNPs, the quenching was largely dominant. As a consequence, a slowing of the photo-induced reactions was caused and not an acceleration. Gold nanoparticles were also studied at the unique nanoparticle scale by AFM and hypermicroscopy (dark field microscopy coupled to UV-visible spectroscopy). On the one hand, the functionalization of individual 51 nm gold nanoparticles was monitored by hypermicroscopy. Switching measurements were then conducted on the diarylethenes molecules beard by single AuNPs, revealing that this switching was comparable to the one previously measured on a more global scale. On the other hand, asymmetric plasmonic dimers made of a 51 nm AuNP and a 28 nm AuNP were prepared and characterized

Cooper, Sarah Elizabeth Mary. "Re-connecting the spirit : Jamaican women poets and writers' approaches to spirituality and God." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2005. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/5427/.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter One asks whether Christianity and religion have been re-defined in the Jamaican context. The definitions of spirituality and mysticism, particularly as defined by Lartey are given and reasons for using these definitions. Chapter Two examines history and the Caribbean religious experience. It analyses theory and reflects on the Caribbean difference. The role that literary forefathers and foremothers have played in defining the writers about whom my research is concerned is examined in Chapter Three, as are some of their selected works. Chapter Four reflects on the work of Lorna Goodison, asks how she has defined God whether within a Christian or African framework. In contrast Olive Senior appears to view Christianity as oppressive and this is examined in Chapter Five. Chapter Six looks at the ways in which Erna Brodber re-connects the spirit. Chapter Seven regards the spiritually joyful God of Jean 'Binta' Breeze. Conclusions are then drawn as to whether writers have adapted a God to the Jamaican context, whether they have re-connected to the spirit and if it is true that Jamaica is a spiritual nation.

Abstract:
1. The hyphae of three basidiomycetes, Coprinus cinereus, Coriolus versicolor and Gloeophyllum trabeum, were stained with DAPI to ascertain their karyotic state. The process of clamp formation was observed in these fungi. 2. Hyphae and clamp connections were treated with CFW to show areas of chitin synthesis. Clamp connections show the same general pattern of chitin deposition as hyphae. Individual hyphae and clamps were treated with nikkomycin, a drug which inhibits chitin synthesis. Again, clamps behaved in a manner similar to hyphae. 3. Genomic DNA was isolated from C. cinereus and used in polymerase chain reactions to try to identify chitin synthase genes. A product was identified, but it is unclear as to whether this is a true chitin synthase gene. 4. Fungi were treated with the chitinase inhibiting drug, allosamidin. The position of branches and clamps relative to the hyphal apex was altered by this antibiotic indicating apical extension was disrupted. Allosamidin did not affect the specific growth rate of fungi in submerged liquid culture. 5. Fungi were grown under conditions of restricted calcium ion supply. With reduced calcium concentration hyphal branch frequency increased as did clamp frequency. Although the pattern of growth was affected, specific growth rate remained constant in cultures grown in submerged liquid culture. 6. The galvanotropic response of fungi was investigated. The magnitude of the response of hyphae to an electric field was dependent upon field strength, length of exposure to the field, pH and calcium ion concentration.

Abstract:
How do we establish objectivity when each person’s perspective is uniquely subjective? Borges’s “The Writing of the God” shows how an epistemically isolated subject is incapable of ever arriving at a robust sense of objectivity without reference to an Other. Donald Davidson’s theory of interpretive triangulation posits that the Other’s external perspective establishes objectivity by making the subject aware of the limits of his or her perception. Emmanuel Levinas suggests that the face of the Other establishes ethics as first philosophy through a primordial, affective discourse. The ethical relation is what undergirds the questions of epistemology which Davidson addresses.

Macdonald, Kenneth Alasdair. "Fatigue of drillstring threaded connections." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1996. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/R?func=search-advanced-go&find_code1=WSN&request1=AAIU090407.

Full text
Abstract:
Analytical, experimental and numerical work is reported on failure and fatigue crack growth in rotary shouldered drillstring threaded connections, where fatigue failure occurs at critical (last engaged) threads. A comprehensive review is made of drillstring failure data in the period 1989 to 1994, where connection failure accounted for 58% of the total, confirming it as the principal cause of drillstring equipment failure over the period. Approximately equal proportions of pin and box failures occurred. An extensive programme of 2-D elastostatic finite element analyses was undertaken on drilling motor and drillcollar connections investigating peak stress response at the critical threads to preload (from connection make-up) and applied loads. A pronounced effect of preload on these peak notch stresses was found, particularly at the pin, revealing the stress concentration factor (based upon remote nominal pipe stress) to be inconstant and a strong function of applied load, its value reducing with increasing load. Fracture mechanics data in the form of finite element derived stress intensity factor solutions were produced. New K solutions in the form of Y functions were derived for tension loaded connections containing cracks: in a drilling motor box at its last engaged thread (without preload): and in an API NC-61 nonmagnetic drillcollar pin and box at their last engaged thread sites, both with preload. These solutions are all conveniently referenced to nominal stresses in the uniform pipe making their use in crack growth studies straightforward. A new solution is also given for a fully circumferential internal surface crack in a tube under axial tension. The growing fatigue crack is also shown to cause load to be shed from the last engaged thread onto adjacement threads. The dominance of the thread root notch singularity at short crack lengths (a/T<0.1) means that equations fitted to the majority of the Y function data using linear regression analysis are done so for two separate regions of a/ T.

Full text
Abstract:
The intention of the study presented in this thesis is to obtain an understanding of the issues involved in using connection-less services over a non-reliable satellite link and to suggest suitable solutions to enhance packet communication services. Particular attention is paid to using VSAT systems for interconnecting LANs through satellite links. A detailed study of Connection-Less Services (CLNS) and end to end transport protocols that use the CLNS over a satellite link with different propagation conditions is presented. Since most existing link, network and transport protocols were originally designed to work with terrestrial networks, they do not necessarily perform well over a satellite link. The main weaknesses in the link protocols are the insufficiency of connection-less data link services, the interaction between error recovery procedures implemented by transport layer and link layer and the interaction between different conversations due to link layer error recovery procedures. The inefficiency in the segmentation and reassembling service is the main weakness in the network protocol. The weaknesses in the transport protocols are the interaction between error recovery procedures and congestion control procedures, the significant delay in receiving feed-back from the remote receiver, the oscillating behaviour of the congestion control algorithms and the inaccuracy of round trip time estimation. Two approaches were used to improve the connection-less service over a satellite link. First, new data link protocols were developed to transparently improve the network service. The second approach was to modify transport protocols (which provide end to end transport service) to suit the characteristics of the satellite network.

Abstract:
Female archetypes reflect a social construction of reality, expressing expected modes of behavior, beliefs, and assumptions about women and are reinforced by repetition of common patterns and themes. Often female archetypes take on the physical characteristics of animals, commune with nature, engage in sexual promiscuity, and possess special powers to bewitch and control men into doing their bidding. Four prevalent archetypes include: the Predatory Woman, who with her bestial nature becomes the hunter of men; the Sacrificial Woman, who dutifully negates herself for the sake of men; the Bad Mother, who is cold, unnatural, and challenges men; and les enfants terrible seductive girl-women who at once tempt and torment men. This research traces the development and evolution of female archetypes and explores how images of women, nature, sexuality, and evil are structured within a cultural framework of Western tradition: myths and folktales, religious, philosophical, and scientific works, and film.

Full text
Abstract:
Hydraulic lock structures have been used for hundreds of years to control and maintain water levels in waterways. The most common are gated water regulation structures used to catch and divert water, and form an essential and critical part of many flood control and agricultural schemes. Although there are clear economic advantages to building the structures, they can contribute to major water quality problems for the waterways they influence (i.e. increased residence times and a change in mixing ability). Further, in most cases, the methods previously used to assess how the structures and their operations influence the flow regimes between the two connected systems were limited, thus hydraulic designers rely on simple formulations, existing literature and experience. Consequently, the objectives of this thesis were to undertake a detailed field study and develop a methodology and computer simulation tool to calculate the flow through a hydraulic structure connecting two water bodies so that future designs can be undertaken based upon sound knowledge. To demonstrate the outcomes of this thesis, the methodology and model were applied to an existing hydraulic structure (referred to as Structure C). Structure C is used to connect and exchange water between the tidally dominated section of the Nerang River estuary and an artificial lake system (Burleigh Lakes) on the Gold Coast, Australia. The gates of this structure open four times each day (once during each semi-diurnal tidal phase) and remain open for a period of 2 hours, allowing alternative and partial exchange between the two water bodies. To gain a better understanding of the dynamics of each waterbody under the influence of the structure, a series of detailed field experiments were initially undertaken to understand and quantify the exchange of water and its mixing ability. Tide gauges deployed within the lake indicated a water level change during each opening of up to 22 cm, equating to 413,600 m3 of water entering the lake over the 2 hour discharge period. Salinity profiles showed that the structure permitted the exchange of saline and freshwater between the two systems, during each tidal cycle, in turn maintaining the lake system as a saline (brackish environment). However, the field study also revealed that the controlled exchange of water between the systems perpetuated a permanently stratified environment on both sides of the structure. To simulate the flow dynamics influenced by Structure C, new routines were incorporated into an existing hydrodynamic model (BFHYDRO) within the model's grid and computational code, as part of this thesis. To achieve this, the flow in and out of the hydraulic structure cell (used to represent the hydraulic structure's location within the model grid) was calculated entirely from the local water level gradients on either side of the structure at each time-step, and not prescribed. This was found to be essential for complex tidally-dominated systems, such as the Nerang River. Routines were also developed to replicate the opening and closing times of the gates. Following the development of the methodology, the hydraulic structure cells were tested and applied to simulate the flow through Structure C and the complex exchange between the estuary and lake, in 2 and 3-dimensions. Tests indicated that the opening and closing times of the gates and the calibration of the discharge coefficient (which forms part of the broad-crested weir formula) were the most sensitive parameters to ensure the correct volume of water exchange between the two systems. Statistically, the model-predicted results compared very well with available surface elevation data within the estuary and lake, and thus, quantified the ability of the hydraulic structure cells to simulate the flux between the estuary and lake for each opening. Following the model validation process, results from the existing configuration were compared with hypothetical design alternatives and are documented herein. Further, part of the thesis also explored a practical and effective computer based learning strategy to introduce and teach hydrodynamic and water quality modelling, to the next generation of undergraduate engineering students. To enhance technology transfer a computer based instructional (CBI) aid was specifically developed to assist with the setup, execution and the analysis of models' output, in small easy steps. The CBI aid comprised of a HTML module with links to recorded Lotus Screen cam movie clips. The strategy proved to be a useful and effective approach in assisting the students to complete the project with minimum supervision, and acquire a basic understanding of water quality modelling. Finally, it is anticipated that this new modelling capability and the findings detailed herein will provide managers with a valuable tool to assess the influence of these structures on water circulation for present and future operations within the region. This model can also be set up at other sites to pre-assess various design configurations by predicting changes in current flows, mixing and flushing dynamics that a particular design might achieve, and assist with the selection process before the final selection and construction.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study certain linear connections arising in physics; and in particular metric connections, Weyl connections and Cartan connections are examined. Emphasis is placed on the holonomy group of the connection and the relationships between the relevant geometric objects in the physical theories. The appropriate mathematical background is reviewed in the first two chapters and various notions from differential geometry are introduced. Proofs of theorems relating covariantly constant and recurrent tensors with holonomy are given in detail, and Eisenhart's results on connections induced in submanifolds are given a modern treatment. The relationship between a metric, its Levi-Civita connection and its curvature tensor is examined in chapter three. Some new results on the problem of how to 'recognise' a metric curvature are presented and the idea of a 'curvature copy' - different linear connections with the same curvature - is discussed. Weyl's elegant attempt to unify gravity with electromagnetism is the topic of the fourth chapter. A full holonomy classification of Weyl connections is given in this chapter, along with results concerning the relationship between metric, connection and curvature. The Cartan connection was introduced by Cartan as a device for placing Newtonian gravity in a similar formal setting to Einstein's theory of gravity. This connection is studied in chapter five and reference is made to holonomy properties, symmetries and reduction of the bundle - which enables Newtonian gravity to take on the appearance of a gauge field theory.

Abstract:
In Sweden, prefabrication in the construction industry is a very common system. In prefabricated structures, there are various kinds of connections and generally many hinged connections. Therefore, it is of high interest to study the behavior of the prefabricated buildings in relation to the connections. Two main theories that can be used to evaluate our structures are the non-linear finite element analysis (NLFEA) and the second order effects. These two theories help to study the real behavior of the structures. Software that can apply these two theories is the ATENA-GiD. Therefore, it was very interesting to explore this software and find out how it can be used for prefabricated buildings. For this reason, a simplified ten-storey building was studied which had been also used in Lindwall’s and Wester’s (2016) master thesis. Various cases were chosen for this building. The building was studied either with monolithic walls or with vertical slip connection between the prefabricated walls. Also, the hollow core (HC) slabs were modelled in two ways and the supports of the columns were modelled in three ways. Even when each slab was modelled with two materials (solid concrete for the upper and lower layer with smeared reinforcement for the lower layer and modified concrete in order to compensate for the voids), the increase in the time for analysis was not important. Also, the cracking was not extensive thanks to the relatively low wind load. The slip joint between the walls didn’t lead to the different displacement between the walls. It was found that the hinged support in the columns was modelled by using the upwind line of the base. In non-linear analysis cases, the model of the structure gave 20% larger displacements than in linear analysis cases which means that the cracking had an important influence on the second order effects despite that the cracking was not extensive. The reduction of the stiffness of the walls to 40% accounting for cracked sections in additional linear analyses to according to the Eurocode 2 was a conservative choice for this building. The most remarkable result was that when the supports of the columns were modelled with hinges there was smaller displacement than when the supports were fixed. The reason for this was the negative displacements due to the buckling of the columns of the first storey. Moreover, for the linear cases, there was a much smaller displacement (5mm) than Lindwall and Wester (2016) (17mm) and this was possibly due to the way that the hinges were modelled in my building. It is interesting to investigate other ways to model the hinges in ATENA-GiD as well as other ways to model the connections between the HC slabs and the perimetric beams. Also, the effect of creep through the modulus of elasticity could be analyzed. Finally, it would be interesting to include foundations in the model to study the possible need for anchorages.

RIU, EMMANUELE. "Dante, Pietro Lombardo e le "Sententiae". Un dibattito intorno a natura, peccato originale, grazia, libertà e predestinazione nella "Commedia"." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Genova, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11567/1006856.

Abstract:

Kim, Young-Yie. "Compassion in Schools: Life Stories of Four Holistic Educators." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/31807.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study the author investigates the nature of compassion, ways of developing compassion within ourselves, and ways of bringing compassion into schools. The author sees an imbalance and disconnection in the current Ontario public school system, between education of the mind (to have) and education of the heart (to be). This is demonstrated in the heightening violence in schools, because violence in schools means that students do not feel connected to and are not happy in their schools. To accomplish this purpose, the author explores the different ways we can connect—within ourselves, with classroom subjects, with students in the school, and with the community at large—through life stories of four holistic educators, including herself. Three have taught in Buddhist, Waldorf, and Montessori schools, which all foster compassion not only through empathy, caring, and love, but also through emotional and moral components of heart education, such as intuition, creativity, imagination, joy (Miller, 2006), and moral education (Noddings, 1992). The enquiry uses qualitative research and narrative method that includes portraiture and arts-based enquiry. The findings in the participants’ narratives reveal that compassion comprises spirituality, empathy, and caring. We can develop compassion through contemplation in an awareness of interconnection between the I and the Other. In conclusion, we can foster compassion in schools if we use holistic education’s basic principles of balance, inclusion, and connection (Miller, 1981, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2010), and if we bring in different ways of fostering compassion that the author has explored through four holistic teachers’ narratives in this study. By nurturing and connecting to students’ hearts, rather than forcing knowledge into their heads, it is possible to create schools where students are happy and feel connected to their learning.

Kratz, Lauren Jane. "CONNECTING WITH THE HEART OF GOD IN GRIEF: EMPLOYING NARRATIVE IN CHRISTIAN BEREAVEMENT CARE." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/5471.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that Christian bereavement care needs to proceed from a solid biblical foundation in determining the goal (receiving comfort from God), model (by focusing on communion with God), and method of care (through narrative and relationship) to guard against secular influences and to bring soul-satisfying comfort to the bereaved. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis. Chapter 2 critically evaluates contemporary bereavement care approaches. Chapter 3 explores the human experience of grief by examining autobiographical narratives and God’s account of the origin of grief in the Genesis narrative. Chapter 4 develops the argument for a theocentric and Christocentric approach. A proposed bereavement care framework is derived from the way Jesus relates to the bereaved and God. Chapter 5 offers practical guidelines on caring for the bereaved using eight relational steps. Chapter 6 concludes by drawing together the arguments to demonstrate how employing narrative in Christian bereavement care effectively connects the bereaved with the heart of God.

EN : The work is presented on 53 pages of printed text. The list of references includes 50 sources. Object of research: phenomenon of intertextuality in a work of art. Purpose: analyze the intertext of N. Gaiman's work "American gods" and assess the degree of adequacy of its reproduction in translation. Theoretical and methodological principles: formulation of the main provisions of intertextuality and features of its translation and analysis of intertextual connections of the original novel by N. Gaiman "American gods" and the means of their reproduction in translation. Results: Intertext is an important part of the text, which can contain not only references to the text, but also the whole culture and can affect different levels of the text, which is why intertextuality is of interest to scholars, including translators. Translation studies of the nature of intertext and its translation are built around the issue of accuracy and adequacy of translation and provide different translation tactics depending on the specifics of the text. IIts influence can best be explored in the formation of the fantasy genre, the concept is based entirely on transferring the hierarchy of the existing mythological world, preserving its laws and conventions and the reader can guess references to certain texts only by decoding the intertext. In N. Gaiman's novel "American Gods" the author builds a plot rethinking Scandinavian mythology and transferring its characters by modernizing but preserving their mythological characteristics, which are presented to the reader through images, by using expressive and appealing functions of intertext, by using quotations, allusions and rhymes. Analysis of the PA, namely the excerpts we selected, determined that the translation was done adequately and accurately, preserving and transmitting both the form and content of information that is easily decoded by the reader of both PA and VT.
