Abstract:
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of congruence between music and paintings on the aesthetic preference of paintings. Congruence was specified as the similarity in perceived regularity and the complexity of jazz compositions and abstract paintings (the ratings of regularity and complexity in both sets of stimuli were obtained in the pilot study). In the main experiment, 32 participants rated the aesthetic pleasantness of paintings with congruent, incongruent, and no music background. In addition, they rated the music-paintings matching (how well the music goes with the painting). The results show no effect of congruence on aesthetic pleasantness ratings. The effect on the perceived matching was significant; matching is higher in the congruent compared to the incongruent condition. These findings suggest that congruency has a strong effect on the perceptual aspect of the music-paintings compatibility (visuo-auditory similarity) and no effect on the aesthetic aspect (liking).

Abstract The main aim of this article is to study admissible congruences on a type B semigroup. First, we give characterizations of the minimum admissible congruence whose trace is a normal congruence on a type B semigroup. After obtaining some properties of admissible congruences with the same trace on a type B semigroup, we introduce the notion of a normal subsemigroup and give characterizations of the minimum and maximum admissible congruences whose kernels are normal subsemigroups. Finally, the concept of a congruence pair of a type B semigroup is given, and two congruences associated with the congruence pair are obtained.

<p>In this paper, we continue to introduce new properties of principal $ MS $-algebras deal with congruence relations via $ MS $-congruence pairs. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a pair of congruences $ (\theta_{1}, \theta_{2})\in Con(L^{\circ\circ})\times Con_{lat}(D(L)) $ to become an $ MS $-congruence pair of a principal $ MS $-algebra (principal Stone algebra) $ L $ are obtained. We describe the lattice of all $ MS $-congruence pairs of a principal $ MS $-algebra $ L $ which induced by the Boolean elements of $ L $. We introduce certain special congruence $ \Psi $ on a principal $ MS $-algebra and its related properties which are useful for the topic of this paper. A characterization of $ 2 $-permutable congruences using $ MS $-congruence pairs of principal $ MS $-algebras is established. Finally, a characterization of $ n $-permutability of congruences of principal $ MS $-algebras is given, which is a generalization of the characterization of $ 2 $-permutability of congruences of such algebras.</p>

We study congruences on the partial automorphism monoid of a finite rank free group action. We determine a decomposition of a congruence on this monoid into a Rees congruence, a congruence on a Brandt semigroup and an idempotent separating congruence. The constituent parts are further described in terms of subgroups of direct and semidirect products of groups. We utilize this description to demonstrate how the number of congruences on the partial automorphism monoid depends on the group and the rank of the action.

Abstract:
Abstract Congruent visual cues augment sensitivity to brief olfactory presentations and habituation of odor perception is modulated by central-cognitive processing including context. However, it is not known whether habituation to odors could interact with cross-modal congruent stimuli. The present research investigated the effect of visual congruence on odor detection sensitivity during continuous odor exposures. We utilized a multimethod approach, including subjective behavioral responses and reaction times (RTs; study 1) and electroencephalography (EEG, study 2). Study 1: 25 participants received 2-min presentations of moderate-intensity floral odor delivered via olfactometer with congruent (flower) and incongruent (object) image presentations. Participants indicated odor perception after each image. Detection sensitivity and RTs were analyzed in epochs covering the period of habituation. Study 2: 25 new participants underwent EEG recordings during 145-s blocks of odor presentations with congruent or incongruent images. Participants passively observed images and intermittently rated the perceived intensity of odor. Event-related potential analysis was utilized to evaluate brain processing related to odor–visual pairs across the period of habituation. Odor detection sensitivity and RTs were improved by congruent visual cues. Results highlighted a diminishing influence of visual congruence on odor detection sensitivity as habituation occurred. Event-related potential analysis revealed an effect of congruency on electrophysiological processing in the N400 component. This was only evident in early periods of odor exposure when perception was strong. For the first time, this demonstrates the modulation of central processing of odor–visual pairs by habituation. Frontal negativity (N400) responses encode the aspects of cross-modal congruence for odor–vision cross-modal tasks.

DeMeo, William J. "Congruence Lattices of Finite Algebras." Thesis, University of Hawaii at Manoa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10125/25938.

Full text
Abstract:
An important and long-standing open problem in universal algebra asks whether every finite lattice is isomorphic to the congruence lattice of a finite algebra. Until this problem is resolved, our understanding of finite algebras is incomplete, since, given an arbitrary finite algebra, we cannot say whether there are any restrictions on the shape of its congruence lattice. If we find a finite lattice that does not occur as the congruence lattice of a finite algebra (as many suspect we will), then we can finally declare that such restrictions do exist. By a well known result of Palfy and Pudlak, the problem would be solved if we could prove the existence of a finite lattice that is not the congruence lattice of a transitive group action or, equivalently, is not an interval in the lattice of subgroups of a finite group. Thus the problem of characterizing congruence lattices of finite algebras is closely related to the problem of characterizing intervals in subgroup lattices. In this work, we review a number of methods for finding a finite algebra with a given congruence lattice, including searching for intervals in subgroup lattices. We also consider methods for proving that algebras with a given congruence lattice exist without actually constructing them. By combining these well known methods with a new method we have developed, and with much help from computer software like the UACalc and GAP, we prove that with one possible exception every lattice with at most seven elements is isomorphic to the congruence lattice of a finite algebra. As such, we have identified the unique smallest lattice for which there is no known representation. We examine this exceptional lattice in detail, and prove results that characterize the class of algebras that could possibly represent this lattice. We conclude with what we feel are the most interesting open questions surrounding this problem and discuss possibilities for future work.

In this thesis we develop a version of classical scissors congruence theory from the perspective of algebraic K-theory. Classically, two polytopes in a manifold X are defined to be scissors congruent if they can be decomposed into finite sets of pairwise-congruent polytopes. We generalize this notion to an abstract problem: given a set of objects and decomposition and congruence relations between them, when are two objects in the set scissors congruent? By packaging the scissors congruence information in a Waldhausen category we construct a spectrum whose homotopy groups include information about the scissors congruence problem. We then turn our attention to generalizing constructions from the classical case to these Waldhausen categories, and find constructions for cofibers, suspensions, and products of scissors congruence problems.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between personal values, perceived organisational values and organisational commiunent. The study builds on the work of Finegan (2000). It is argued that the greater the congruence between a person's personal values and the perceived organisational values of the employing organisation, the greater would be their commitment to that organization. This study examines this issue in a school context, examining the teachers' values and their perceptions of their schools' values. As part of the study a survey was administered to a sample of teachers at eight schools that represented the three main streams within the Australian education system; namely Government schools, independent Christian schools and Catholic schools. In this case, personal values and perceived organisational values were measured using Schwartz's (1991) Values Scale and their congruence was calculated using Savery's (Savery, 1993. 1983, 1981) approach. Commitment was measured using Meyer and Allen's (1990) Organisational Commitment Scale. Perceived organisational support and professional commitment were also measured through Eisenberg's (1986) and Blau's (1985b) scales. The study suggests that teachers' backgrounds have little impact on commitment. It further suggests that personal values have only a minimal effect on continuance conunitrnent, although they have a stronger relationship with affective commitment. While congruence between the two types of values do impact on affective commitment, teachers' perceptions of their organisations' values (irrespective of their own values) are stronger predictors of commitment. Personal values are also shown to affect professional commitment. Although the major focus of the study is to explore the relationship between values congruence and organisational commitment, the results suggest that the most significant predictors of affective organisational commitment are perceived organisational support and teachers' perceptions of organisational values.

This work considers some implications of viewing gravity as an emergent force. In such a viewpoint, general relativity arises as the thermodynamic limit of some microscopic theory. As such, one would expect the macroscopic variables such as the curvature tensors to fluctuate about their mean. This thesis presents a method for analyzing the effects of curvature fluctuations on spacetime thermodynamics. This is done by examining the evolution equations for time-like and null congruences, and recasting them as stochastic differential equations. The purpose of viewing the congruence evolution equations as stochastic is in the spirit of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and may lead to an application of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to spacetime. It is expected that this reformulation of the congruence equations will lead to further insights on the effects of fluctuations in general relativity.

Savic-Jabrow, Pamela. "Client perspectives and experiences of congruence." Thesis, University of Chester, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/600552.

Abstract:
This small scale enquiry looks at the value of Rogers’ concept of congruence from the perspectives and experiences of clients rather than those of the counsellor, as, it is the view of the author that the value of congruence is only established if it is perceived so by clients. It contributes to the debate about Rogers’ definition of congruence and offers a research informed perspective, relevant to a range of therapeutic interventions, of the nature and function of congruence in the counsellor-client relationship. The study involved me as the researcher and six participants from two cultural backgrounds who had responded to a leaflet after having experienced therapy with a qualified counsellor other than me. A pilot study was carried out followed by six semi-structured, face-to-face and telephone interviews that were transcribed and analysed using a qualitative, thematic analysis approach. A decision was made to divide participants into those who had experienced person-centred counselling and those who had experienced CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) or integrative therapy. This was not an original decision but one that was made during the study in order to compare the presence and the importance of congruence in different models of therapy. Results revealed that there were terms that were central to, related to and unrelated to Rogers’ definition of congruence. Factors that were centrally related to congruence were: connection and demeanour. Therapist facilitative factors that were tangentially related to congruence were: respect; understanding; empathy; self-disclosure; trust; body language; conveying emotion and caring. Participants also referred to non-related facets such as therapist competence. Due to the majority of codes being related to congruence, this led to the conclusion that participants held a wide definition of the concept, implied by proxy (as a substitute). Participants confirmed the value of congruence, suggesting that Rogers’ theory, that is, that therapist congruence is necessary for positive growth to occur in clients, is important in counselling (Rogers, 1957). Congruence therefore cannot be described as an outdated theory or professional ideology but as a key concept that is prized and valued in modern day therapy. This study offers an original contribution to knowledge and professional practice because it provides not professionals but clients with the opportunity to have their voices heard. It allows service-users to put into words their experiences, thereby offering a better understanding of the phenomenon of congruence. The study has therefore allowed the provision for a more empowering, research-informed counsellor-client experience. A second claim to the study being unique and a valid contribution to knowledge is that the research has a particular focus on Rogers’ definition of congruence and enquires if this is relevant for service-users as opposed to service-providers.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to propose a model for co-creating destination value through Social media influencer (SMI) credibility, its congruences with destination products and tourists, by the mediation of tourist-destination product congruence, and perceived overall value creation for the tourist destination experience through SMI (OVCTDESIM). Methodology – Data was collected from a sample of 211 tourists and 32 tourist boards in Croatia, and it was processed and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) ver. 26. Univariate statistical analysis (descriptive statistics) was used to describe the characteristics of the sample. Multivariate statistical analysis (exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis) was used to confirm the reliability and validity of the scales, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses. Thus, structural equation modeling was performed using Amos ver. 26, to analyze the structural relationships between the variables. An Independent-sample t-test was performed to identify the significance of differences between perceived and created or communicated overall value for the tourist destination experience through SMI during previsit, visit, and post-visit stay. Findings – The model explained 51.3% of the variance in intention to visit and 56.1% of the variance in intention to recommend the destination. Perceived SMI credibility significantly influenced perceived SMI-destination product and SMI-tourist congruences. Research results indicate that perceived SMI-tourist congruence significantly affects the perceived OVCTDESIM. However, the hypothesis regarding the influence of perceived SMI-destination product congruence on OVCTDESIM was not confirmed. The research results reveal that perceived OVCTDESIM significantly influences attitudes toward a destination, consequently influencing the intention to visit and recommend the destination. Additionally, it was established that partial mediation exists between SMI-destination product and SMI-tourist congruences through tourist-destination product congruence. Significant differences are identified between perceived and created or communicated overall value for the tourist destination experience through SMI. Contribution – The present research aims to close a specific research gap by proposing an original, empirically tested model that can be further developed and expanded in future research related to the use of influencer marketing in creating destination value and possibly in other contexts. Also, findings can serve as a reference for destination management planners to comprehend all the important dimensions to consider when employing influencer marketing to increase destination value.

Abstract:
The article proved that the highest concentration of reflected rays from the surface of the reflector is located along the quasifocal line. The quasifocal line belongs to the caustic surface of the congruence of reflected rays. The parameters of the shape and position of the quasifocal lines are described by equations. Computer visualization of reflecting surfaces, congruences of reflected rays and their caustics, quasifocal lines and maps of isolines of local concentrations on the surface of the receiver of reflected rays are presented.

Strategies used to manage overlap of primary study data by exercise-related overviews authors. Protocol for a systematic methodological review. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2022.5.0161.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: This methodological review aims to find out how often strategies for handling overlapping data from primary studies are used across the systematic reviews considered by overviews authors focused on exercise-related interventions in different health conditions. Secondarily, we aim to describe the overlap strategies used, the authors' acknowledgment of not using any management strategy as a methodological weakness, and the congruence between the protocol and the final published overview in terms of overlap management. Study designs to be included: We will include overviews that consider SRs with or without meta-analysis (MA), without distinction of the methodological design of the primary studies included. The definition of SR adopted by the authors of the overviews will not be considered as an eligibility criterion. Overviews that also include primary studies not considered in the selected SRs will not be excluded. An overview is defined as any study: 1) aimed at synthesising general information, methods, and outcome data from SRs, 2) that makes explicit the inclusion and exclusion criteria for SRs, 3) that includes an explicit sear.
