Abstract:
This research has as theme The Pallottine Educational Congresses as a Political Pedagogic an Instrument of Integration (1994 2007) , and it presents a study of the Congregation of Pallottine priests and brothers, during the Latin American Congresses of Pallottine Education conducted by the educational institutions, between 1994 and 2007. The Pallottine Pedagogy arose from the need to revive the faith and the charity, between 1795 and 1850, with Vicente Pallotti in Rome, Italy. The Pallottine priests arrived in Argentina and Brazil in 1888, brought by the Italian immigrants to provide pastoral and educational aid. Due to expansion of the Pallottine Schools, arose the need to deepen and strengthen the pallottine political pedagogic identity of these educational institutions. Therefore, in 1994, it took place the First Latin American Congress of Pallottine Education, with the objective to bring educators together from Pallottine Schools. Thus, this research sought to understand how the Pallottine Pedagogy as institutional pedagogic policy of education got organized in Argentina and Brazil, between 1994 and 2007, from the analysis of the Latin American Congresses of Pallottine Education, documents (letters) and a questionnaire applied to principals and teachers of Pallottine Schools. The study is divided into three chapters, dealing respectively with: the Pallottine Pedagogy: considerations about the principles of this pedagogy; Latin American Congresses of Pallottine Education: development of the Congresses, analysis of the letters and questionnaires; Antonio Alves Ramos Sshool and its Educational practice: pedagogic practice. It was concluded that the pallottine pedagogic educational policy got organized through the guidelines of education from their own countries, church and congregation, adapting according to the need of the school community.

The sexual division of work brings the forms of unequal as if establish relations of organization, production and conduct of choices in the forms of land use. The presence of women in the scenario of agriculture is still marginalized and amended as aid to work of the men, which are considered the main force of productive unit, and in extension activities to domestic work - as vegetable gardens, small livestock and other activities that involve the backyard. From addition, in rural studies, is a great challenge to incorporate the woman as the subject and focus of research. This article understands the importance of giving continuity and visibility to the studies and research that involve the theme of women and gender in agriculture, in particular in the area of knowledge of agroecology. This way, it was proposed a bibliometric analysis of the studies presented in the Brazilian Congresses of Agroecology (CBAs). Whereas the various contributions of different areas of knowledge in agroecology, bibliometrics can provide important information on the directions of studies and research in this area in Brazil. To analyze the data and the content of the abstracts expanded with the theme of women and gender, it was chosen to organize them through a filter with the following terms: gender, women, peasant, rural women, workers, women, farmers, producers, the ospreys, seated and garbage collectors. The summaries selected from the filter were organized through the following metadata: Title, Authorship, Affiliation, Year of publication, Abstract and Keyword. In this article we managed to analyze the authorship and affiliation, showing how each state/region of Brazil has influenced on publications during the twelve years of CBA. Was perceived also as the theme was growing during the editions of the event and, at this moment, it was studied the trajectory of groups and institutions in the various spaces of agroecology, and as v influenced the universities, technical assistance and rural extension and nongovernmental organizations with the theme.

Sarwal, Kavita. "International cancer control congresses : do they make a difference?" Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43322.

Full text
Abstract:
Statement of the Problem This study has taken advantage of a “natural experiment,” the holding of International Cancer Control Congresses (ICCC) to conduct research that assesses the value of such undertakings, and examines ways for effectively pursuing positive change in improving policy and practice related to cancer control. Given the importance of this global challenge, this study investigates the question: Do International Cancer Control Congresses influence reported changes in participant behaviors and activities that enhance the development or implementation of population-based cancer control programs and increased collaborations? Methods of Investigation The population of interest included all the congress registered participants for two International Cancer Control Congresses—362 individuals at the 3rd ICCC for the first pod of surveys; and 310 participants at ICCC4 for the second pod of surveys. The primary data collection instrument was self-report surveys, surveyed in two pods. Each pod included an on-site survey followed by a follow-up survey a few months later on the same census sample of participants. Research instruments for data collection included surveys, interviews, conference documentation, observations as well as secondary data from WHO publications and appropriate web based publications like country plans and others. The study was organized as a mixed methods research using a triangulation design that allowed a mix of both quantitative and qualitative data in a single study. Conclusions The study indicates that most respondents gained professionally in improved understanding of global population based cancer control programs and new insights into cancer control. Through sharing best practices and insights gained at the congress in their jurisdictions, many indicated that the Congress has helped them in their cancer control work, including increased awareness for establishing collaborations and for setting up surveillance systems; also highlighting for them the importance of expediting national cancer/integrated non-communicable disease plans. Increasing their networks, participants continue experiencing a rise in interest and involvement in cancer control. The Latin American Region research reveals that it takes time before initiatives emerge and can be attributed to ICCC. In revealing which finds are inconclusive, this study offers opportunities for cohort longitudinal investigations.

Yang, Yijia. "Have the Chinese Financial Markets Been Manipulated Before the CPC National Congresses?" Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1102.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examined the probability that the Chinese financial markets have been manipulated prior to the most recent three CPC National Congresses. Based on historical data, it used the Monte Carlo simulation to calculate the probability of the weekly and monthly percentage change of the SSE50 Index and the RMB to USD central parity rate one week and one month prior to the most recent 17th, 18th and 19th CPC National Congress. The results indicate that the weekly and monthly percentage change of both the SSE 50 Index and the RMB to USD central parity rate prior to all three Congresses would be extremely unlikely if both markets have moved in a manner consistent with their previous stochastic movements. It is highly likely that the Chinese financial markets have been manipulated prior to the most recent three CPC National Congress. This study also makes conjectures about manipulators’ motivations behind the market manipulation, assuming the existence of market manipulations.

Fahnestock, Aidan S. "Taking Back America: The Republican Freshmen of the 104th & 112th Congresses." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/884.

Full text
Abstract:
The 2010 freshman class bears an uncanny resemble to their idealistic counterparts from 1994. Their campaign rhetoric, motivations and beliefs are almost interchangeable. The triumphs and especially frustrations and failures of their first terms also bear stark similarities. Most critically, the freshmen's conservative agenda suffered a disappointing electoral rebuke in their first elections as incumbents. Both the 1996 and 2012 presidential year congressional elections halted the respective momentum of the Republican Revolution and the Tea Party. The lessons of the 104th Congress offer many lessons to the freshmen of the 112th, namely that ideological "revolutions" in America (in this case, those of a conservative nature) struggle to deal with the challenges of governing. This thesis will examine and compare the rhetoric and motivations of the freshmen during their initial campaigns, and the triumphs and tribulations of their first terms in a city that is resistant to sudden and sweeping changes. The title of this work, "Taking Back America," reflects the sense of urgency and gravitas that spiritually united both classes of freshmen. The personal observations recorded in Linda Killian‘s The Freshman (1998) and Robert Draper‘s When the Tea Party Came to Town (2012) form the foundation of this examination, which focuses entirely on the U.S. House of Representatives.

Van, Boening Mark Virgil. "Call versus continuous auctions: An experimental study of market organization." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185542.

Full text
Abstract:
The results from 17 new experiments and 19 previously reported experiments are compared in an investigation of call and continuous auctions. The call auction used is the computerized PLATO sealed bid/offer (SBO), uniform price auction. The continuous auction used is the PLATO double auction (DA), a computerized version of the "open outcry" double auction. The SBO call auction has temporal consolidation of market orders and has limited information about trading activity. The continuous DA auction is characterized by sequential bilateral trades, and trading information (bids, offers, and prices) is publicly displayed. The paper first explores the effect of multiple crossings per trading period in the SBO call auction. Next, a comparison of SBO and DA is made, based on market experiments using flow supply and demand schedules. The institutional comparison is then extended to experimental asset markets. The results imply the following. First, multiple calls per period increase the efficiency of the SBO call auction, relative to one call per period, but they also induce greater misrepresentation of costs and values in the first crossing each period. Buyers and sellers also withhold units from the first crossing in a further attempt to gain strategic advantage. However, neither the withholding nor the misrepresentation appears to have any substantial influence on price. Second, the SBO auction with two calls per period is as efficient as the DA auction. In markets with a random competitive equilibrium (CE) each period, the SBO auction does a better job than DA at tracking the random CE price. Thus the SBO auction is equally as efficient as the DA, and has the further attributes of lower price volatility and greater privacy. Third, in laboratory asset markets, the SBO auction exhibits price bubbles similar to those observed in DA markets. Price dynamics in the two institutions are comparable, despite the stark differences in order flow and information dissemination.

Abstract: This work is characterized as State of the Art research and aims to describe and analyze the characteristics and trends of scientific production presented in four encounters Research in Environmental Education (EPEA), conducted from 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007. The 303 complete papers were studied from the following descriptors: author of the article, the home institution, educational level, knowledge, and the thematic focus of the study. The results provide data on the institutional basis of production, showing strong inter-regional imbalance of the same, which is moved to the South-south, in addition to the predominance of authorship related to the institutions promoting the encounters - UNESP, USP and UFSCar. They also reveal: (a) strong interest in issues facing the school formal, whichever works covering the various grade levels in a generic way (22%) or those pursuing higher education (16%) or the Final Years Elementary school (13%) (b) the lack of investigations on the Early Childhood Education and Early Years of Elementary Education, (c) that a large portion of production does not favor a specific area of expertise on environmental education (45%) although there are significant number of studies related to ecology (11%) (d) the predominance of research that maps or address the characteristics and conceptions of individuals (33%) on some aspect of Environmental Education, followed by a series of works focused theme in Theoretical Foundations and Curriculum in / for environmental education (29%), besides a significant portion of articles focused on Contents and Methods in Environmental Education (10%). The work also shows important elements for reflection on research in environmental education and the formation of EPEAs while promoting the dissemination of research in the area, indicating the need to expand and encourage the dissemination of the Brazilian academic production in Environmental Education.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: In the panorama of studies in History of Mathematics in Portugal there is a gap in the analysis of the role of the Portuguese Association for the Advancement of Science. It was precisely with the objective of contributing to this study that was proposed to develop this subject. In fact, although less developed than other European countries, Portuguese investigators have also understood the necessity of forming partnerships among themselves in order to follow the footsteps of the main European scientific communities. The analysis of minutes and volumes of several congresses have allowed to study their scientific activity. After referring the Portuguese and Spanish historical reality, the next chapter tries to establish a bridge between the first Iberian Congress for the Advancement of Science, in Oporto, in 1921, and the second of these congresses in national territory, in Coimbra, in 1925. Also the national participation in the Congress of Salamanca hasn’t been forgotten. The emphasis was, obviously, on the Congress of Coimbra, of which is pointed out the work of the section of Mathematical Sciences, with a brief analysis of its content. To conclude, is briefly referred the congresses which followed until the third Congress in Portugal, in Lisbon (1932). It was also reflected on the subjects referred in Cadiz (1927) and Barcelona (1929).

Committee, Conference for A. Democratic Future (CDF) Organising. "Conference for a democratic future." African National Congress, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/66502.

Abstract:
This booklet is intended to serve as a report-back to those organisations which were party to the Conference for a Democratic Future (CDF) and to those who were unable to be present. It is also intended to act as a guide to action for 1990 and beyond. The CDF was a historic gathering of the forces for change represented by 4600 delegates from over 2100 organisations. These range form Bantustan parties on the one end of the political spectrum to ultra leftist groups on the other end. But perhaps the most significant presence was from organisations like Five Freedoms Forum, NAFCOC, the Hindu Seva Samaj, that of traditional leaders and the hundreds of other community organisations which are rapidly becoming an active component of the mass struggle for change. Also significant was the strong worker representation from a range of trade unions, including eight affiliates of NACTU whose leadership had turned down the invitation to be part of the Conference. The Conference for a Democratic Future was a major step in the overall process of building unity in action and maximising the isolation of the regime. It was, in this sense, not an isolated event. The year 1989 had taken unity in action to new heights with the Defiance Campaign and the mass marches. The process leading up to the CDF was intended td be more important then the Conference itself. Likewise, in the post-Conference period, the follow-up process should be given the importance it deserves. At the end of the day, it is this follow-up process which would determine the actual success or failure of the CDF exercise. The Declaration adopted at the Conference represents the strategic orientation of the broad forces for change. It calls for the intensification of the struggle and for the placing of the question of political power on the agenda of our united mass action. The Conference resolutions collectively contain the elements of a programme of action. Without exception, each resolution is a call to action. The task of all participants of the Conference is to translate these resolutions into Mass United Action. The adoption of the Harare Declaration should act as the starting point of a process which takes its content to the masses of our people in all comers of the country. The demand for the Constituent Assembly should become a popular demand of the people. By adopting the resolution on international pressure, the Conference sends an unambiguous signal to the world community on how the people of South Africa view their role in the struggle to end apartheid. The follow-up to the Conference should also be a continuing search for whatever common ground exists between the broad forces for change. This search must take place not only at a national level, but mere importantly at a regional and local level. Let us bear in mind the words of the Declaration: “The moral appeal of the Democratic Movement has never been greater”. by an MDM delegate on the CDF Convening Committee.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the development of Chinese local people’s congresses (LPCs) in the reform era (1979 onwards). It explores the dynamics behind this development and the role LPCs play in legal-political reform in China. Changes to LPCs are examined in the following areas: national laws and local regulations concerning the LPC system, organization and operation of the LPCs and their standing committees, elections for deputies at both direct and indirect level, and the activities of deputies, including deputy-voter interactions. Based on empirical findings, this thesis argues that LPC reform involves top-down legal reform of the congressional system, social stratification, the emergence of new social classes, a new awareness of rights, and greater public participation. It concludes that through congress elections, Chinese people are increasingly educated and trained to exert their political rights; meanwhile, through congress operations the Party state is becoming more institutionalized, legalized, and pluralistic. That is the contribution made by LPCs to the rule of law and democracy in China.

Abstract:
The Fourth National Conference of the APDUSA, held in Ezibeleni, Queenstown on 15/16 April 1995, must be marked as one of the most significant events in the history of the organisation. Taking place one year after the establishment of a new political order in South Africa, it was a pertinent time to assess its import in the face of the critical problems that still beset the nation. The achievement of the universal franchise, after long years of bitter struggle, has indeed been a signal victory for the labouring masses of South Africa. But it is a victory that has brought no improvement in the socio-economic conditions of their existence. Still suffering on the anvil of oppression and exploitation, the millions of workers and land-starved peasants are fast losing faith in the ability of the new Government of National Unity to solve their problems. The struggle for liberation has thus entered a new phase. But the oppressed are also faced with a crisis of leadership. Their organisations of struggle are in disarray, with many of those who formerly occupied leading positions, having departed to take up positions in the institutions of government. In this situation, the task of mapping out the programmatic basis of the future course of their struggle, is one of utmost importance. These are the questions that commanded the attention of the APDUSA conference. Against the background, it is fitting that the large majority of those participating in the conference were members of the new generation. Theirs was a major contribution. After a thorough assessment of the new needs of the struggle, conference resolved to redefine and sharpen the political programme of the APDUSA. In so doing, it remains governed by its commitment to the interests of the workers and the landless peasantry in both its short term and long term objectives.

Abstract:
Each year, between 300 and 500 million people develop malaria. Close to 3 million people die as a result. Due to resistance there are now few drugs left which are effective against malaria; one is a Chinese herbal remedy called qinghaosu (artemisinin). A section of this thesis represents an attempt to understand further the mode of action of this antimalarial agent. Several mechanisms involving iron have been proposed and the main categories reviewed (chapter 3). Techniques including ESR spectrometry, fluorescence and absorbance measurements were used to further probe the mode of action of qinghaosu. The findings of these studies provide support for a mechanism proposed by Wu et al., involving cleavage of the peroxy bridge in qinghaosu with the ferrous ion as opposed to antimalarial activity being due to the generation of high valent iron-oxo species. The ether derivative of qinghaosu, arteether has been studied using 2D NMR in order to provide further insight into the unusual structure of this compound (chapter 4). A comparison of the sp2 lactone functionality in qinghaosu with the sp3 ether group in arteether was performed. Evidence is presented for different conformations and chemical shift values. The immune system protects the human body from invasion by foreign substances or cells. A key part of this immune response comes from cellular components known as macrophages. The killing process of macrophages appears to involve nitric oxide. However, this natural defence mechanism is not very efficient as the body is susceptible to invasion by microbes. The term microbe includes both parasites and bacteria. The toxicity of nitric oxide (NO) and NO donor compounds has been investigated using the bacterium E. coli (chapter 5). In addition, studies have been performed using parasites. Malarial parasites (Plasmodia) are difficult to culture, therefore Leishmania parasites which cause the tropical disease leishmaniasis were used as a model (chapter 6). Evidence is presented for the toxic nature of NO donor compounds towards both parasites and bacteria. However, qinghaosu and its derivatives did not prove effective against Leishmania mexicana parasites in contrast with their reported antimalarial activity. The conclusions of this study suggest that qinghaosu possesses a toxicity mechanism selective for malarial parasites.

Abstract:
The present thesis focuses on the influence of Eurocommunism on the PSUC, one of the main Catalan political parties during the 1970s. While the 4th Congress of the Party, held in 1977, set down the core ideas related to Eurocommunism and led to many changes within the organization, the 5th Congress (1981) was conceived by the party leadership, as its ultimate consecration. Nonetheless the debates that took place on the aforementioned congress revolved, precisely, around the legitimacy of the term Eurocommunism a fact that eventually opened up the crisis -and the looming split- when it was decided its definitive suppression. In a few words, our aim is to study which were the changes undertaken by the party and how they intertwined with the officialization of a new political line -under the banner of Eurocommunism- that gave room to new insights and approaches but also created internal instability when some portions of the rank and file members felt that core elements of the party were being eroded.
