Résumé L’émiettement du corps social et la constitution d’un espace et d’un temps des tribus (Maffesoli 2000) sont les signes d’une décomposition et d’une recomposition des univers culturels ainsi que des rapports que ceux-ci entretiennent entre eux. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) de Stephan Elliott peut se lire comme une mise en scène de ce dynamisme social par la convocation d’une culture de la périphérie, la culture gay, dans le canevas d’un genre typé : le road movie. Cet article tente la lecture de la problématique culturelle par le prisme technique du road movie et de ses aménagements esthétiques et sociaux. En effet, dans ce film, la culture homosexuelle est livrée on the road, mais aussi dans ses rapports à la société. Si le road movie permet une allégorisation du parcours, il met surtout en évidence les rapports interculturels, dont les manifestations se placent sous le sceau du conflit mais aussi sous celui d’une complémentarité dont il faut analyser les modalités et les performances pour comprendre qu’en définitive, questionner cette (inter)culture révèle combien la culture est de nature sédimentaire.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to discover the causes of intercultural conflict and its management styles among Sunway University students. A total of six participants were selected from among different departments at Sunway university. A qualitative method was used to achieve the objectives of this research through in-depth interviews. the causes of intercultural conflict and its management styles were assessed based on intercultural conflict and intercultural conflict management style theory. The participants’ feedback was transcribed and analyzed by using the deductive coding method which identified themes such as intercultural conflict, impact on intercultural conflict on relationships as well as intercultural conflict management styles that comprises of five categories, obliging, dominating, avoiding, compromising and integrating style. The results suggest, misunderstanding, as the main cause of intercultural conflict and it impacts people both positively and negatively depending on the situation. While suggesting avoiding style as the most used style of overcoming intercultural conflict among Sunway university students when it comes to gender, race, religion and cultural issues. The research findings will add to existing work on intercultural conflict and its management styles.

Abstract:
Analytical review of foreign psychological research on the international conflict styles is presented in this article. Intercultural conflict is understood as an interpersonal conflict between representatives of different cultures. The main models describing the intercultural conflict styles are analyzed: the dual concern model, the intercultural conflict styles inventory model, the face negotiation model. The publication provides a brief review of modern studies’ results of behavior predictors in the intercultural conflict; special attention is paid to the analysis of the influence of culture and intercultural communication apprehension on the choice of conflict styles. The importance of assessing the conflict styles effectiveness used in the situation of intercultural interaction is noted. In conclusion, unresolved problems and actual trends in the study of behavior in the intercultural conflict are designated.

Abstract:
The article reveals the linguistic aspect of intercultural conflict communication with the help of a specially prepared linguistic experiment on “Interlingual homonyms” (conducted with English- and Ukrainian-speaking students of Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University), as well as through scientific observation (interesting conflict-generating communication situations during the educational process, the subject of which was the contradictory use of certain morphological forms and phraseological units, were identified). Intercultural communication is positioned as a process of verbal and non-verbal communication between people belonging to different national and cultural communities. Conflict in intercultural communication (i.e., intercultural conflict communication) is presented as a cultural phenomenon, the content of which is determined by cultural factors, and the process of emergence and development of conflicts is regulated by cultural norms, which under certain circumstances lead to the emergence of special cultural rituals that affect the process of conflict interaction between participants. The analysis of the linguistic aspect of intercultural conflict communication is to identify verbal and non-verbal markers of cultural information in order to achieve communicative interaction between representatives of different cultures and prevent the emergence of communicative conflicts. Specific examples demonstrate that intercultural conflict communication can be realized at several linguistic levels: lexical, phraseological, morphological, and syntactic. It is proved that the most effective way to regulate intercultural conflict communication is to develop intercultural communication competence in its real and potential participants as the ability to adequately use culturally significant language tools, concepts and behavioral stereotypes.

Abstract:
Intercultural communication has been considered as an effective tool in performing international business in overseas subsidiaries. In this paper, we investigate the impact of intercultural communication on interpersonal conflict between expatriates and Thai managers during the new product development process, and how expatriates’ culture of origin moderates this impact. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey from local managers who regularly communicate with expatriate managers working in Thailand. The results show that intercultural communication reduces relationship conflict and increases task conflict. Furthermore, the negative impact of intercultural communication on relationship conflicts between Asian expatriates and Thai managers is stronger than between Western expatriates and Thai managers. The research results contribute to the existing theories by extending inter-functional communication and conflict to an intercultural context. Also, this research enhances understanding on how the impact of intercultural communication on conflict is moderated by expatriates’ culture of origin, namely Asian and Western. Managerial implications for MNC subsidiaries and future research are also discussed.

AbstractConflict is a part of daily life and it can occur for many reasons. In an intercultural environment, both international and local people can face conflict due to their interactions. Even though there has been an exponential increase in the growth of international students in Turkey in recent years, little is known about their experiences in the realm of intercultural conflicts. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of intercultural conflicts among international students at Anadolu University. In particular, the study sought to examine possible intercultural conflicts this group of students might experience, international students’ intercultural awareness, the major sources of the intercultural conflict and how the international students cope with intercultural conflict. A qualitative research method with phenomenological research design was utilized and semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to gather data. The analysis of the study was organized into six themes, namely: awareness, approach, experience, communication style, worldview change, and coping strategy. Except for the last theme, the obtained data aligned with the literature. Findings revealed that the international students experienced intercultural conflicts mainly due to lack of intercultural competence. Based on these findings, recommendations for future studies were suggested.

These barriers can cause internal conflict within a group of organizations or companies that have employees with different cultures. Internal conflicts that occur will also prevent the organization to achieve its goals. The current issue is how the management of intercultural communication conflicts occurs in international organizations. The purpose of this study is to describe the experience of employees of international organizations in the management of intercultural communication conflicts by knowing the negotiation of employee identity, knowing the types and forms of conflict experienced by employees of international organizations and knowing the form of face management in inter-cultural communication conflict management at employees of international organizations. The subject of this research are international organization employees from India, UK, Indonesia and China. Theory used in this study are Identity Negotiation Theory, Face Negotiation Theory, Effective Intercultural Workgroup in Communication Theory and Thomas and Killman’s Conflict Management Model. The results showed that the negotiation of identity between collectivist and individualist cultures that occurred begins with the interaction between cultures in the form of communication behavior, language, personal character and response from other employees. Differences in ways of thinking and view are the main causes of conflict between individualist and collectivist cultures. Face owned by each culture influences other differences such as how individuals perceive themselves in conflict, self-priority in conflict, and the conflict management style used. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the overall aspects of intercultural competence of early childhood teachers and the differences in intercultural competence according to individual and institutional variables. The participants were 331 kindergarten and childcare teachers located in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyongsangnam-do, and an intercultural competence measurement tool was used. The results of the study are as follows. First, the intercultural competence of early childhood teachers was found to be at a higher level than average, both overall and in sub-factors. Among the sub-factors, conflict management and respect showed similarly high levels, followed by reflection and communication. Second, significant differences were observed in overall intercultural competence and sub-factors such as conflict management, communication, and reflection based on individual variables such as age, teaching experience, and educational background. Specifically, younger and less experienced teachers demonstrated higher overall intercultural competence, as well as higher competence in communication and reflection. Higher educational qualifications were associated with higher competence in conflict management and communication. Third, institutional variables such as teacher qualifications, age group of the assigned class, and institutional size showed significant differences in the sub-factors of intercultural competence, particularly in communication and conflict management. In other words, kindergarten teachers, teachers of younger age groups, and teachers in smaller institutions exhibited higher competence in communication and conflict management. This indicates the need for attention to early childhood teachers' intercultural competence and suggests the necessity to explore supportive measures considering various factors for enhancing intercultural competence.

Abstract:
Romantic relationships are situated within broader cultural and family contexts, and this may be particularly salient to those in intergroup relationships. This study examined variations in young adults’ experiences with intercultural romantic relationships by ethnicity and immigrant generation. A sample of ethnically diverse young adults ( N = 628; Asian, Latino, and European background) reported on self and parent attitudes toward dating outside of one’s own culture, own current dating status, and disapproval and conflict with parents over current and past dating status. Analyses revealed three key findings. First, intercultural relationships were evenly distributed across ethnic and immigrant generation groups. Second, participants of Asian background perceived greater attitudinal discrepancies with their parents toward intercultural dating than did participants of Latino and European background and were more likely to report intercultural dating conflict with their parents than Latino participants. Third, first-generation and second-generation participants were more likely to report intercultural dating conflict with parents than third-generation participants. Altogether, the findings show the importance of (a) incorporating culture into the conceptualization of intergroup relationships, particularly for ethnic minority and recent immigrant groups, and (b) considering the family context of intercultural dating relationships. Implications for the study of intergroup romantic relationships are discussed.

After explaining the role culture may play in conflict and conflict resolution, the part of the research presented in this article examines different understandings of the intercultural aspect related to conflicts as well as its implications for restorative justice practice. Presenting results of a survey mapping existing restorative justice practices in intercultural conflict settings in Europe, the paper draws a picture on European realities in the field.

Defendo a relevância da aplicação do conceito de etnicidade na área dos Estudos do Letramento com vistas à compreensão mais adequada e detalhada de fenômenos que comportam aspectos de hibridismo e de tensão cultural inerentes ao diálogo intercultural. Apresento relato de pesquisa de campo de viés participativo com a intenção de explicitar a forma de aplicação desse conceito na área dos Estudos do Letramento. Concluo que o conceito de etnicidade mostra-se fértil para dar conta de situações que envolvem fatores de invisibilidade típicos de zonas de conflito, propiciando, ainda, a compreensão mais adequada dos conceitos bakhtinianos de dialogismo, de polifonia e de arena de conflito.

Findings: Research shows power dynamics and organizational justice significantly impact conflict outcomes and satisfaction. Power imbalances exacerbate conflicts, leading to dissatisfaction. Unequal power distribution can escalate conflicts due to perceived unfairness. Conversely, organizational justice fosters positive outcomes and higher satisfaction levels. Fostering equitable power dynamics and promoting justice mitigate conflict and enhance satisfaction. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Cultural intelligence theory, social identity theory & intercultural communication competence (ICC) theory may be used to anchor future studies on the impact of cultural diversity and intercultural competence on conflict management styles in Egypt. Provide training and development programs focused on enhancing intercultural competence among individuals and organizations. Advocate for the implementation of diversity and inclusion policies that promote cultural sensitivity and intercultural competence in the workplace.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss cultural causes of conflict in the workplace and call for research to address what happens when cultures collide generating workplace conflict. The author assumes that because cultures differ in terms of functional solutions to problems of social interaction that there will be conflict when people from different cultures are interdependent in the workplace. The author discusses types of culture and their conflict management profiles with respect to three characteristics of conflict management: direct vs indirect confrontation; emotional expression, and third party conflict management. The author proposes what happens when cultures collide and calls for research on those collisions. Design/methodology/approach Application of the cultural literature on self-worth to three elements of workplace conflict: direct vs indirect confrontation of conflict, feelings and expressions of negative emotions associated with conflict and timing and type of third party intervention. Findings When people from dignity, face, and honor cultures are working together the fundamental differences in the logic of self-worth in these three types of culture may cause conflict. People from dignity and honor cultures are likely to confront conflict directly, while those from face cultures are more likely to confront conflict indirectly. Workplace conflict generates negative emotions, but culture seems to affect whether that emotion is anger, shame or both. The timing of third party intervention into workplace conflict, that is, how managers intervene in workplace conflict has some parallels with how community mediators act in that culture. Research limitations/implications There is limited research comparing management of workplace conflict in dignity, face, and honor cultures. The author generates propositions and suggests a research strategy for collecting data to test propositions. Practical implications Understanding what is culturally normative in terms of self-worth, confrontation, emotional expression, and managerial intervention can help people involved in workplace conflict understand what they are experiencing. It can also help managers intervene effectively. Social implications How people react to workplace conflict varies with culture as does how managers intervene. Knowing this provides people with the first element of cultural intelligence that may help them manage conflict to facilitate a more creative and effective multicultural work environment. Originality/value This paper integrates theory and research from cross-cultural psychology, the psychology of emotion and the literature on third party intervention into community conflict to explain the patterns of cultural conflict and conflict management in the workplace. It also suggests what it may take to manage cultural conflict in the workplace successfully.

This study aimed to examine the influence of culture on the conflict management styles of Chinese executives when interacting with their German staff in Chinese companies located in Germany. A mixed method was employed. First off questionnaire survey was completed and the data was analyzed with t-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient methods, then semi-structured interview was conducted and the qualitative content analysis method was used for analysis. This study found that IDV, UAI, IVR dimensions had significant powerful influence on conflict styles of Chinese and German managers; the cultural orientations of Chinese and Germans had also been altered, but their favorite styles remained the same due to the factors, namely: cultural regression, stability of national culture, and various dialectics.

The act of welas asih or mercy is a necessity to create peace and harmony within Indonesia's multiculturalism. This article attempts to develop the concept of welas asih aiming to forgive the unforgivable which often occurred during the multicultural conflict as well as enhancing intercultural competence. The article overviews the face negotiation approaches in intercultural dialogue as a non-formal learning environment. The dialogue covers cultural conflict resolution in Indonesia, with a goal of intercultural competencies and building a better intercultural friendship. The research uses qualitative method and literature review analysis of related articles such as ethnicity conflict, face negotiation and forgiving. The result of this study shows that communication’s facework strategies in face negotiation are the best predictors in developing the act of welas asih. Total forgiveness after transgression is well accepted for establishing a better friendship-relationship. This discourse shows that the usage of face negotiation is essential in creating harmony, understanding cultural difference and eliminating prejudice within college students’ friendships

Framed by the face negotiation theory and intercultural conflict management concepts, this study aims to identify the facework strategies used by international undergraduates in intercultural conflicts with Malaysian instructors at a private university, and investigate the preferred effective conflict management procedures for Malaysian instructors in managing intercultural conflicts with international undergraduates. This study uses a descriptive cross-sectional design using questionnaires for data collection. A total of 317 participants were involved: 105 Indonesian undergraduates, 106 Chinese undergraduates, and 106 Malaysian instructors. The results showed that both Indonesian and Chinese undergraduate groups have similar tendencies for integrating strategies, although they differ in avoiding and dominating strategies. For intercultural conflict management procedures, the most favourable procedure is mediation and the least favourable is ombudsman service. These findings provide instructors with first-hand data for subsequent teacher development on face-saving application. By applying the appropriate facework strategy and ways to enact it, instructors can further develop their teaching skills by creating a healthy student-teacher relationship with international students.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand the conflict experiences and conflict management styles encountered by South Korean and North Korean defectors in the community and to explore alternatives for social integration. We analyzed that the relationship between North Korean defectors and South Korean residents, including conflict experiences, coping types in neighboring and social life areas, and intercultural competencies. It was found that North Korean defectors were more aware of conflicts than South Korean residents. It was confirmed that both South and North Korean residents predominantly chose the problem-solving method as one of the conflict management styles, while North Korean defectors favored the dominating method more than South Koreans. The conflict management style of the dominating method was influenced by the comfort of relationships, language and cultural differences, and the mutual respect capabilities of cultural competencies. The problem-solving method was influenced by conflict management, respect, and reflection capabilities amidst cultural differences and intercultural competencies. Based on these research results, a proposal was formulated for a detailed application of intercultural competencies in social welfare practice to enhance social integration and a specific approach for a resident awareness improvement program.

Therefore, with a communication science approach, this study will analyze the problems and barriers to intercultural communication that occurs between Sunni and Shia groups, causing eternal conflict. This research was conducted in two places, namely in Karanggayam Village, Omben District, Blu'uran Village, Karang Penang District, Madura, and in Rusunawa Puspa Agro, Sidoarjo. The research method used is the phenomenology of Edmun Husserl. The selection of the phenomenological method was based on the need for research data, namely exploring the experience of intercultural communication of each informant involved in the conflict. The results of the study stated that the barriers to intercultural communication that occur are due to the struggle for social status between Sunni and Shia religious leaders, the low culture of the Madurese community in communicating in the form of firmness in communication, the view of the life of the surrounding community based on syncretism, differences in standards of good or bad values ​​between groups, and perceptions negative relations between groups in the form of prejudice, stereotypes, and ethnocentrism that lead to insincerity in communication. Intercultural communication is often affected by conflicts, which are not easy to resolve, mainly due to the clash of conflict communication styles. Direct/indirect ways to approach conflicts, emotional display/control, the ability to empathize and consider perspectives of others, cultural conventions, previous experiences with conflict, cooperativeness, and many other factors determine our conflict communication styles. It is important to acknowledge, though, that these styles are learned and are not rigid. They can differ depending on the context and situation. This article reports the results of an intercultural telecollaboration project, drawing on four sources of quantitative and qualitative data, i.e., the results of assessments conducted with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, and a Conflict Styles Assessment based on the Thomas–Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, as well as students’ critical self-reflective feedback. The data were collected at a Mid-Atlantic minority-serving university from undergraduate students, who were invited to explore their conflict communication styles through a series of activities and then reflect on their experiences and the insights gained during this intercultural telecollaboration experience. As a result of this pedagogical intervention, most of the participants not only became aware of their conflict communication styles but also developed their empathy and ability to intervene to defend others who are discriminated against or attacked verbally.

This study aims to examine the dimensions of the conflicts arising from the interactions of two different cultures in intercultural marriages and to examine under which conditions and the level to which cultural adaptation is provided. This study was conducted with 35 participants who have an intercultural marriage and live in Antalya Province’s Alanya District, where people from many cultures and nationalities can be encountered due to Alanya being a tourist region. This study obtained the data using the semi-structured interview method to investigate the conflict and adaptation that may occur as a result of intercultural marriages. The snowball technique has been used to access the participants. At the end of the interviews conducted with these individuals, foreign spouses’ process of adapting to the Turkish family structure and culture, what they’ve acquired from experiencing cultural conflict, and what conflict and adaptation processes they experienced were examined within the scope of family and social environments. The findings from the study have been compiled within the framework of conflict and adaptation as a result of cultural interaction.

Globalization, forced and voluntary migration, as well as the development of international relations result in increased cultural heterogeneity and, accordingly, increased frequency of intercultural contacts. Unfortunately, the massive clash of different cultures, ethnic groups and confessions is often accompanied by the emergence of cultural misunderstandings, prejudices and conflicts. From the point of view of scientific knowledge, intercultural conflict is a relatively new and poorly studied subject of psychology, which includes the need to create new tools for studying this kind of conflict. The article presents the results of the development and preliminary validation of The Questionnaire on Behavioral Strategies in Intercultural Conflict based on a motivational model for choosing a behavioral strategy. The development of the questionnaire took place in several stages and included a qualitative and quantitative methodology. The methodology was validated on a Russian sample (N = 256). The obtained results of approbation indicate rather high psychometric characteristics of the method as a research tool. The developed questionnaire describes behavior consistent with seven strategies: collaborating, competing, avoiding, accommodating, teaching norms, expressing negative emotions, and searching a third party. The questionnaire can be used by various specialists for the prevention and settlement of intercultural conflicts, when conducting trainings on ethnic tolerance and intercultural competence and communication, when developing recommendations for state and non-profit organizations dealing with the problems of interethnic relations, adaptation of refugees and migrants.

Conflict can be caused by crises including communication crises. Wrong communication can lead to great conflict and can threaten the survival of an organization or corporation. This study highlights the conflict that occurs between mining business investors and the community of PT. SGE with the people of Jaboy Sabang Aceh. The conflict raised in this study started from the land dispute between the people as landowners and PT. SGE as an investor. In the beginning, the companys mining business has built communication with elites such as regional leaders, community leaders, religious figures, and related stakeholders, but did not touch the public interest as a party directly related to the companys operational area. From the perspective of intercultural communication, there is a lack of harmonious communication between enterprises and society. This research is conducted to identify and trace the process of intercultural communication to reduce uncertainty between the two parties based on the theory of uncertainty reduction, the theory of intercultural communication, the concept of conflict, conflict management, and conflict resolution. As qualitative research, the data was collected through in-depth interviews with informants from investors and community leaders in Aceh strengthened by observation. From the results of the analysis and discussion, the researchers found the fact that the company did not adhere to the principles in building intercultural communication and did not dive into the characteristics of the people of Aceh. PT. SGE temporarily halted the companys operations to complete licensing and fulfilling its commitment to the community. As a result of the conflict that occurred that once disrupted the operations of companies that carry the mission of the government in realizing information for the people of Aceh can walk back and get support from the community. Conflicts that occur have been resolved with the concept and model of conflict resolution. Thus what is the desire of the community is bridged through open communication, consistent, committed so that mutually beneficial cooperation is established.

The article is devoted to the study of the conceptual picture of German-speaking virtual intercultural reality and the processes of categorization that occur during the confrontation of local inhabitants and foreigners, as well as the definition of concepts objectified in German-language conflict discourse in virtual communication and their verbalization. A theoretical review of modern studies on the actualization of the conceptual system of individuals in linguistic reality in an intercultural context. The processes of categorization and conceptualization of discourse space on the basis of categorical, structural or metaphorical actualization of concepts of intercultural reality are analyzed. It is proposed to divide the concepts verbalized in the analyzed fragments of intercultural conflict discourse into three types: categorical concepts organize the knowledge of subjects about themselves and their environment by dividing and combining the concepts of intercultural discursive space in opposition pairs; structural concepts organize knowledge about the subject according to the structural features of the object through which they are denoted; metaphorical concepts concretize abstract and general ideas with the help of vivid concrete images based on an analogy between two phenomena.

This research assesses the relationship between intercultural exposure variables—the length of time spent in the United States, the length of previous experience outside Saudi Arabia, the length of time studying English as a second language, and the frequency and nature of interactions with Americans—and intrapersonal identity conflict. To assess this relationship, the researcher conducted a survey of Saudi Arabian students studying in the United States, which collected information on exposure variables, as well as employing Leong and Ward’s (2000) Ethno-Cultural Identity Conflict Scale (EICS). A Pearson correlation test was conducted to examine the relationship between the Saudi sojourners’ intercultural exposure and their identity conflict scores to conclude that there is not a relationship between exposure and identity conflict.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate how intercultural communication is affected by language use in Latvia and to show that in accordance with theories of D.L.Horowitz and P.R.Brass (Horowitz, 1985; Brass, 1991) the question of language is a question of conflict in Latvia. The empirical base for this report is the survey "Towards a civic society" conducted by the Baltic Data House. In the second analysis of empirical data, author is trying to show the correlation between language proficiency, language use and intercultural communication, and the hypothesis of the report is that the question of language is a question of conflict, because the language hierarchy is changing in Latvia.
