Abstract:
Luigi Capuana: Experimental Fiction and Cultural Mediation in Post-Risorgimento Italy. The studies in this collection revisit established critical positions which confine Luigi Capuana’s work within the orbits of Naturalism and Positivism. A variety of theoretical readings in the volume investigate how the author’s experimentalism and eclectic interests respond to positivist ideology, the limitations of scientific practices, and the conflicts and anxieties of the fin de siècle which arise from a change in intellectual attitudes towards new ways of interpreting reality. The volume’s three sections focus on cultural mediation and the construction of socio-literary identities, gender representation and metaliterature, and on the author’s experimentation with the natural, supernatural and fantastic. Each section illustrates how the search for the new and experimentalism constitute driving forces in the author’s artistic investigation and production, making his work an important source for a new reading of the fin de siècle’s epistemological revision.

Holt, Robin, and Mike Zundel. Using fiction in organization and management research. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198796978.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
Robin Holt and Mike Zundel describe their use of another unconventional source of data—a television fictional crime series. They argue that the boundaries between ‘soft fiction’ and ‘hard fact’ are blurred, and that fictional accounts can generate insights into aspects of organizational and social life more effectively than conventional methods. The relationship between fiction and social science can be understood in four ways: fictional research, fiction as inspiration, fiction as data, and fiction as research. Their approach is illustrated with an analysis of the cult television crime series The Wire, which is based on the drugs trade in Baltimore, involving the gangs, police, social workers, churches, local authorities, and wider community. The Wire can be seen as a rich ethnography, illustrating how fiction can illuminate individual, group, and organizational phenomena including emotions, hopes, fears, and conflicts, and the wider social condition, highlighting the institutional constraints on individual behaviour.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Gregory Benford's series of science fiction novels that could be classified as “science thrillers”: Cosm (1999), The Martian Race (1999), and Eater (2000). In these novels, some strange and often menacing occurrence (such as the approach of an alien object to Earth) triggers conflict between scientists, government interests, and global politics. Benford's scientific thrillers—in their detailed descriptions of how science works, how it is conducted in the laboratory, and how this interacts with personal conflicts and institutional politics—hearken back to an important current in his fiction that began with In the Ocean of Night and was perfected in Timescape (1980). Seamlessly integrating social activity and scientific research, Timescape represents a moment of supreme balance between the demands of science and of fiction.
