Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Antoine-Marie Chambeyron (1797–1851) was a disciple of Jean-Etienne Esquirol (1772–1840) that history forgot, undoubtedly because he made no original contribution to psychiatric nosography. In 1827, his interest in the medical-legal status of the insane led him to translate into French and annotate the first medical-legal psychiatric treatise ever published, which was the work of the German philosopher Johann Christoph Hoffbauer (1766–1827). His translation played a role in shaping the French Law of 1838, the first piece of modern legislation aimed at protecting the rights of mental patients and limiting the State’s power to confine them arbitrarily. Chambeyron is among the least-cited contributors to the prestigious work of nineteenth-century French alienists.

Abstract:
IntroductionThe new coronavirus (COVID-19) is being a threat to global health. Pregnancy is considered a state of vulnerability to mental health and can be even greater if they are facing the current pandemia.ObjectivesWithin this framework, we wanted to inquire about the state of mental health, and more specifically, about depression, during pregnancy during pandemia COVID-19 and their opinion of the health team∙s professionals that controls pregnancy and how they are involved in the assessment of their mental health status. Also know her fears and uncertainties about the virus and its possible consequences (complications during pregnancy, childbirth or confinement at home, possible contact with COVID-19 positive patients).MethodsA cross-sectional study was carried out that includes 73 pregnant women from Spain, during September 2020, through an anonymous, voluntary and multiple response type online survey which included questions about socio demographic aspects and the Beck Depression Inventory.ResultsThe average age was 32 years. 90.41% were with a partner or married. The results of Beck’s questionnaire: 24.65% have moderate/severe depression. 25.65% had or had thought about consulting a mental health professional, 90.41% considered that professionals had not asked about their mental health during pregnancy. 98.89% reported fear of becoming infected and having to confine themselves at home and 97.26% reported fear of get COVID and affect the health of the unborn baby.ConclusionsCOVID-19 represents a huge challenge for pregnant women’s mental health. The Development and implementation of mental health service, skilled and aware of this area is crucial, for this vulnerable population.

Abstract:
ObjectivesTo estimate the effect of student status on mental health condition during COVID-19 general lockdown in France.DesignCross-sectional analysis comparing students and non-students recruited in the same study.SettingParticipants of the web-based CONFINS study implemented during the general lockdown in France in spring 2020.Participants2260 participants (78% women) including 1335 students (59%).Primary and secondary outcome measuresThrough an online questionnaire, participants declared if they have experienced suicidal thoughts, coded their perceived stress on a 10-points scale and completed validated mental health scales (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 for depressive symptoms, Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 for anxiety symptoms) during the last 7 days. The effect of college student status on each mental health condition was estimated using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Stratified models for students and non-students were performed to identify population-specific factors.ResultsStudent status was associated with a higher frequency of depressive symptoms (adjusted OR (aOR)=1.58; 95% CI 1.17 to 2.14), anxiety symptoms (aOR=1.51; 95% CI 1.10 to 2.07), perceived stress (n=1919, aOR=1.70, 95% CI 1.26 to 2.29) and suicidal thoughts (n=1919, aOR=1.57, 95% CI 0.97 to 2.53). Lockdown conditions that could be potentially aggravating on mental health like isolation had a higher impact on students than on non-students.ConclusionsCollege students were at higher risk of mental health disturbances during lockdown than non-students, even after taking into account several potential confounding factors. A close follow-up and monitoring of students’ mental health status is warranted during lockdown periods in this vulnerable population.

Abstract:
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a recurrent depressive disorder in which episodes occur at a particular time of year. The most frequent variant is winter SAD in which patients become depressed during the autumn or early winter, with remission or conversion to hypomania the following spring. Recognition of winter SAD is important because the diagnosis predicts a good response to the novel treatment of phototherapy. One other variant, summer SAD, has also been described and we will discuss this condition separately. Otherwise, we will confine our discussion to the winter variant which we will refer to as SAD.

Abstract:
We examine how labor together with social participation protects against cognitive impairment and depression, with a focus on gender differences. Data are drawn from four waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006–2012). Both paid work and unpaid work are considered labor participation. Social participation includes the frequency of participation in formal social institutions, religious groups, grandparenting, and interactions with family and friends. Using growth curve models, we find that social and labor participation are independently associated with outcomes and effects vary by gender. Religious group activity was beneficial only for women, whereas inability to work was detrimental for men only. Informal social gatherings and labor participation, paid or unpaid, were beneficial for both genders. Findings on gender differences highlight how social identities can shape social roles and confine activity space, and productive engagement, affecting outcomes for mental health in later life.

Abstract:
This article looks into the establishment and development of two criminal asylums in Norway. Influenced by international psychiatry and a European reorientation of penal law, the country chose to institutionalize insane criminals and criminally insane in separate asylums. Norway’s first criminal asylum was opened in 1895, and a second in 1923, both in Trondheim. Both asylums quickly filled up with patients who often stayed for many years, and some for their entire lives. The official aim of these asylums was to confine and treat dangerous and disruptive lunatics. Goffman postulates that total institutions typically fall short of their official aims. This study examines records of the patients who were admitted to the two Trondheim asylums, in order to see if the official aims were achieved.

Abstract:
Introduction: A person experiencing mental health issues may be physically confined at the suggestion of an informal leader who sees that individual’s violent behavior as a threat to the community. Aims: The aim of the study is to explore the perceptions of the tu’a golo, a man who serves as informal village leader, regarding his role in confining a person with mental health issues in Manggarai, on the island of Flores, in Indonesia. Methods: The study uses an ethno-semantic approach. Data collection and analysis were carried out using Spradley’s Developmental Research Sequence; the researchers interviewed one tu’a golo from each of fifteen villages in Manggarai. They then analyzed the data via using domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural themes. Results: The researchers found that the tu’a golo has three important roles in confining a person with mental health issues: (1) before physical restraint and confinement, as an adviser to the family and to the person exhibiting mental health issues; (2) before physical restraint and confinement, as a mediator between the family of the individual with mental health issues and the community; (3) during physical restraint and confinement, as a protector of the person with mental health issues, the family, and the community. Conclusions: In areas with limited mental health services, informal leaders take on important roles in the physical restraint and confinement of the mentally ill. Therefore, healthcare professionals must include informal leaders in programs to improve mental health services and reduce the use of physical restraint and confinement.

Abstract:
Abstract Research about pregnant women in jail is scant. This exploratory study begins to fill this gap by examining the demographics; background characteristics; and self-reported physical health, mental health, and substance use challenges reported by 27 pregnant women incarcerated in a large midwestern county jail. It further reports on the prenatal care before and during their incarceration, plans of these pregnant women for delivery of their child, caring for their infant after their release from jail, and their expectations of paternal or family support post-release. Among the sample, 66.7 percent reported a physical health care problem, 48.2 percent had received mental health treatment, and 18.5 percent had substance use treatment in the previous year, but only 51.9 percent had seen a health care professional before their incarceration. All women expected the father of their child to provide financial support, but only 76.9 percent expected the father to be involved with the child. The authors also discuss implications of the findings for jail health care services and reintegration policy and practice for pregnant women.

“Recognizing that prisons disproportionately confine sick people, with mental illness, substance abuse, HIV disease among other illnesses; and that prisoners are subject to further morbidity and mortality in these institutions, due to lack of access and/or resources for health care, overcrowding, violence, emotional deprivation, and suicide.…(APHA) condemns the social practice of mass imprisonment.”After decades of steady decline, tuberculosis has emerged as a significant public health threat in the United States. The rising rates of tuberculosis cases, an increasing proportion of which are resistant to standard chemotherapies, are linked to the many scourges threatening our communities: the explosion of poverty, drug use, violence, the HIV epidemic, and the concomitant rise in congregate housing including homeless shelters, residential drug treatment programs and incarceration facilities. Jails and prisons have disproportionately high rates of tuberculosis infection and have been implicated as points of tuberculosis spread and, as such, are a critical point for tuberculosis control interventions.

Abstract:
SynopsisWomen report more symptoms than men in mental health surveys. The evidence shows that psychometric biases cannot explain this significant difference. This study attempts to explore other factors that could bias the results – for example, that women are likely to report less serious symptoms than men or are less apprehensive in reporting symptoms because they have a higher tendency to report symptoms than men. A random sample of 213 women and 222 men, all married and between the age of 25 and 40, were interviewed at home in two districts of Montreal (Canada) and given the Health Opinion Survey (HOS). As has been usually found, women scored higher than men on the HOS. A variety of scales assessed the seriousness of the symptoms and the results did not indicate any sex difference in this regard. Moreover, there was no correlation between the mental health and the Jourard Self-Confidence Scale. Finally, women did not confide more about their symptoms than men, contrary to the prevalent opinion according to which they are more likely to do so. Sex differences on mental health scales do not, therefore, appear to be related to the type of bias assessed in this survey.

‘Working Together to Prevent Suicide’ is the theme of World Mental Health Day 2019. According to the World Health Organisation, suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15-19 years old. One person dies of suicide every 40 seconds, with this form of death affecting people of all age groups in all countries. Hence in line with this year’s theme calling for a trans-sectoral and interdisciplinary approach to address this epidemic, we would like to invite all contributors and readers of Neuroscience Research Notes (NeurosciRN) to take a moment to reflect on how they - as researchers can contribute towards the facilitation, discussion and promotion of positive mental health, which in turn has been found to reduce suicide risk.

Halliday’s transitivity model has been adopted in the current study as it offers effective toolkits to analyse and describe the original text. It produces a repertoire of features of the original text, which can be compared to the corresponding profiles of the target text with the aim of identifying a) the similarities and differences between the source text and the target text and b) whether the translators have produced an accurate mental image or not. Added to this, this study intends to determine whether this model can be used as a theoretical framework for analysing certain socio-cultural experiences encoded linguistically in a text, regardless of the language itself. It has been shown from the discussion of the data that this model does not confine itself to English only, but can be applied to other languages such as Arabic. Further, the processes along with their participants and circumstances utilized by the writer in the current study lend themselves easily to equivalent processes in the target language. Again, it has been shown that in order to produce an accurate mental image, it is not enough to pay extra attention to the process itself along with its participants and circumstances, but adequate consideration should also be given to the interaction between the participants of the process and the flow of energy, force dynamics, scope of attention, time lapse and metaphorization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
What should the general hospital psychiatrist do, and how should he do it? In psychiatric settings, psychiatrists may legitimately confine their attention to those patients whose disorders can be classified according to ICD-9, but in general hospital settings, the same approach defines a very restricted range of activities. Evidence is reviewed which highlights the differences between psychiatric disorders encountered in psychiatric hospitals and those found in primary care or general hospital settings. Different activities proposed for the general hospital psychiatrist, and the results of research comparing these, are reviewed. A recent study is discussed in which alteration of the psychiatrist's method of practice in a general medical unit produced considerable changes in the pattern of psychiatric referrals. Evaluation of the efficacy of their interventions should remain the ultimate goal of general hospital psychiatrists. This can be adequately undertaken only by means of better understanding of the process by which general hospital patients attract psychiatric referral.

Abstract:
Parenting a child with neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) is related to a higher rate of anxiety and depression, increased stress, and reduced quality of life. Although there is reason to believe that parenting children with NDD in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) can be challenging, there is a lack of knowledge on the psychological distress among these caregivers, especially in rural areas. The aim of the study was to examine the psychological distress among caregivers having children with NDD in rural Nepal. Sixty-three caregivers were visited in their homes and interviewed by experienced mental health professionals. This study examined demographic information, severity of disability, perceived caregiver burden, and psychological distress, measured by the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). The study found a high level of psychological distress in the caregivers (M = 5.38, SD = 2.8). A majority (90.5%) scored two or higher, indicating the presence of a common mental disorder (CMD). Almost half (46%) scored six or higher, indicating a high level of distress. A majority of the caregivers reported that caring for their disabled child had a negative effect on the caregiver’s economy (70%), physical health (65%), social life (64%), and dreams and expectations for the future (81%). There was a significant relationship between the caregiver’s psychological distress (GHQ-12) and degree of disability in the child (Gross Motor Function Classification System), degree of caregiver burden, feeding problems, having health workers as a possible source of help, receiving incentive from the government, having somebody to confide in, and caregiver illiteracy. A forward regression analysis entering the significant factors indicated that caregiver burden, having someone to confide in, and having health workers as a possible source of help were significant related to psychological distress. The final step of the model explained 42.4% of the variance in psychological distress among the caregivers. The study indicates a high level of psychological distress and high overall burden in caregivers of children with NDD in rural Nepal. Further implications for research and service development are discussed.

Abstract:
Some research reports that women who give birth often experience anxiety, fear, and even depression. This study aims to get an overview of mental health problems of pregnant women, the causes, and the need for social support. The study design is a quantitative study with a survey method. Data collection on mental problems for pregnant women begins with early detection for pregnant women by asking 25 simple questions. Data collection uses a questionnaire with a combination of closed and open questions. The location was at the Bojong Menteng Health Center, Rawalumbu, Bekasi City, in the first-second weeks of February 2020. Samples were taken using a population sampling technique with a total of 44 people. Data analysis uses quantitative descriptive methods. The results found pregnant women who experience depression (22.3%), anxiety (43.2%), sleep disorders (70.4%), and psychosomatic disorders. The cause is an unplanned pregnancy, an unwanted pregnancy, financial problems, a less harmonious family, birth spacing, and demands for work. The need for social support from spouses, family, friends, Posyandu cadres in the form of affection, attention, and a place to confide in, also needs support from health workers to assist them in dealing with problems to overcome their perceived complaints. Mental health problems of pregnant women, the causes, and the need for social support must be addressed with the policies and services of mental health services for pregnant women. So that pregnant women can carry out their pregnancy until delivery and the postpartum period is in a healthy and happy state.

Abstract:
Abstract. Aims: This paper examines the role that mental health services (MHS) performed in the management and provision of medical care and treatment of problematic users of alcohol in Western Australia (WA) over the period since 1900. Methods: The research involved an examination of legislative enactments and regulations, records of parliamentary debates in Hansard, administrative records in the State Records Office, and other sources of public information, such as departmental annual reports, reviews of services, studies and newspapers. Results: This research identified three eras of policy involving problematic users. The first, from 1900 to the mid 1970s, focussed on controls in inebriates and lunacy legislation to create a regime of civil commitment, designed to confine and compel ‘inebriates’, as well as ‘convicted inebriates,’ to ‘dry out’ and rehabilitate. The second, between 1975 and the late 1990s, involved the creation of a state-wide system of specialist service providers to provide treatment and recovery for problematic users. The system involved a spectrum of services that included a detoxification hospital, outpatient clinics and community-based regional services established and operated by a statutory public health agency, the Alcohol and Drug Authority (ADA). The third era, which commenced in the late 1990s, involved the transfer of all community-based services from the ADA to ‘not-for-profit’ non-government organisations (NGOs). The end result of this devolution was the ADA retained only a limited treatment role, as the operator of the inpatient detoxification facility. The balance of its functions were redefined in relation to the prevention of the use of alcohol and other drugs, primarily through support of mass public education programs, as well as oversight of funded NGO programs. The paper concludes with a consideration of a recent major development which involved administrative and legislative actions in 2015 to abolish the statutory body which had operated since 1975 and transfer administrative responsibility for drug and alcohol services into the Mental Health Commission.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to space limitations I have chosen to confine my reply to the comments by Temkin (this issue, pp. 899–901) that touch most directly the concepts of practice effects and reliable change. Temkin seems to portray my adherence to the classic approach as a private affair. However, Temkin herself (Temkin et al., 1999) reported to utilize the most widely applied procedures of Jacobson and Truax and of Chelune et al., which are based on the classic approach. For unexplained reasons they had substituted a different standard error. The unsatisfactory justification later given in their reply to Hinton-Bayre's (2000) letter revealed the presumably actual reason: unfamiliarity with psychometrics including the classical test theory (CTT). Not surprisingly, Temkin ignores this historical aspect in her comment. Nevertheless, the new post-hoc arguments she brings up deserve, of course, a fair evaluation.

Abstract:
IntroductionThe absence of companionship during childbirth is known to be responsible for negative emotional birth experience, which can increase the risk of postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The context of COVID-19 epidemic and the related confinement could increase the rate of negative experience and mental disorders. The main objective is to compare, in immediate post partum, the maternal sense of control during childbirth between a group of women who gave birth during confinement (‘confinement’ group) versus a group of women who gave birth after confinement but in the context of epidemic (‘epidemic’ group) versus a group of control women (‘control’ group; excluding confinement and epidemic context). Methods and analysisThis is a national multicentre prospective cohort study conducted in four French maternity units. We expect to include 927 women in a period of 16 months. Women will be recruited immediately in post partum during three different periods constituting the three groups: ‘confinement’; ‘epidemic’ and ‘control’ group. The maternal sense of control will be evaluated by the Labour Agentry Scale questionnaire completed immediately in post partum. Postnatal depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), post-traumatic stress disorder (Impact of Event Scale—Revised) and breast feeding (evaluative statement) will be evaluated at 2 months post partum.Ethics and disseminationThe study was approved by the French Ethics Committee, the CPP (Comité de Protection des Personnes) SUD OUEST ET OUTRE-MER IV on 16th of April 2020 with reference number CPP2020-04-040. Abstract:
Discussions of Locke’s theory of abstraction generally confine themselves to the Essay. The only previous paper analysing the developmentofLocke’stheory, bythepresentwriter, dealt solely with drafts of the Essay—Locke’s journals and the three drafts of the Essay, now known as Drafts A, B and C—the first two dating from 1671, and latter most likely from the first few months of 1686. This is a far from exhaustive survey of the subject in Locke’s writings. There are numerous comments on universals and abstraction in Locke’s philosophical works outside the Essay proper, including several extended discussions of the matter. Most of these were written after the publication of the Essay, providing a clear indication of Locke’s mature views on abstraction. This paper will survey these materials to determine their import for interpretations of Locke’s theory—most notably, whether they support a ‘partial consideration’ account as recently defended by Michael Ayers. Drawing on remarks made at different points in Locke’s career, and addressing different subjects, the discussion is necessarily somewhat episodic, but it does, I believe, provide substantial further support for an interpretation of Locke’s mature theory of abstraction as one of mental separation. In addition, thishistorical evidence can provide further perspective on the writing of the Essay, highlighting how Locke’s method of composition might well be the source of much of the difficulties that commentators find in the work.

Abstract:
This paper explores the conditions of public transport with respect to user accessibility, design of infrastructure, and safety from a gendered perspective. Our investigation aims to understand the factors that direct a citizen’s choice of whether or not to use public transport. Our discussion is focused on gender disparities among user experiences, so we confine our focus to that of women’s perspectives and their experiences with public transport use. A framework for our discussion was formed with consideration of the theoretical aspects of fairness, justice, and gender in transport, as well as user statistics. We identified several spaces where public transport policy planning and implementation may be improved in order to balance gender disparity of access, safety, and security across the gender divide. (We acknowledge that both distinct and interchangeable definitions of safety and security exist. In this work, we err to the latter, while also recognising from user-based qualitative data that safety concerns are not limited to infrastructure, but also relate to other unwanted sources of physical, mental, or emotional harm experienced within the transport system.) Primary among these was the necessity of both the acknowledgment and appreciation of the issues disproportionately experienced by women. A one-size-fits-all approach was found to ill-recognise the societal minutiae of constant caring responsibilities, income limitations, ability/disability, or the effects of past negative experiences faced by women. We conclude that improvements may be achieved by targeting and meeting actual, not just perceived need.
