Abstract:
Conduct problems in young children, if not addressed, can develop into extremely serious and costly problems by the time adolescence is reached. The findings of this research project indicate that there are effective, affordable interventions for young children. Early identification and intervention are the keys to reducing the personal costs to troubled children and their families as well as the financial costs to health and social service systems.

Abstract:
AbstractMany children are reported by parents to exhibit problems of conduct at home, and similarly many children are reported by teachers to exhibit conduct problems at school. Surprisingly, very little research has examined the extent to which children exhibit behavioural problems in the clinical range at both home and school. The current study examined the co-occurrence of problems at home and school in a sample of 189 children in schools in Victoria. The total sample consisted of (a) 124 children whose parents responded to invitations to participate distributed through schools, and (b) 65 children who had been referred to various agencies because of conduct problems. The occurrence of problems at home was assessed using the Child Behaviour Checklist (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1983), and problems at school were assessed using the Teacher Report Form (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1986). For the school sample, 7 children (5.6%) exhibited conduct problems in both settings (scores in the borderline/ clinical range), with 27 children (21.7%) exhibiting them in one setting only. For the clinic sample, 39 children (60.0%) exhibited problems in both settings, with 21 children (32.3%) exhibiting them in one setting only. The results of this study indicate the need for interventions that can be used consistently across home and school settings, as well as independently in single settings when warranted.

Abstract:
This study tests the predictions made by several causal theories proposing different etiologies for childhood-onset and adolescent-onset conduct problems. It investigates a variety of causal factors proven to be important for the development of antisocial behaviors, specifically neuropsychological/cognitive deficits, temperamental vulnerabilities, dysfunctional parenting, deviant peers, and rebelliousness. Current theories generally agree that the early onset pathway is distinguished by interactions between a child with a difficult temperament and dysfunctional parent-child interactions. However, theories differ as to whether they emphasize the temperament and neurocognitive deficits of the child, or the parenting behaviors. In the adolescent onset pathway, theories typically focus on the importance of affiliation with deviant peers but differ as to whether this is attributed to a personality characterized by the rejection of traditional values and rebelliousness as leading to this association or failures in parenting practices. Seventy-eight pre-adjudicated adolescent (ranging in age from 11 to 18) boys housed in two short-term detention facilities and one outpatient program for boys at risk for involvement in the juvenile justice system in southeastern Louisiana participated in the current study. The sample was ethnically diverse (56% African-American) and largely came from facilities serving either a large urban or a largely suburban and rural region of the state. The sample was divided into two groups based on the youngest age of a self-reported delinquent act or parent-reported severe conduct problem. The childhoodonset group (n =47) displayed at least one serious antisocial behavior prior to age 12, whereas the adolescent-onset group (n =31) did not. As predicted, the childhood-onset group showed greater levels of dysfunctional parenting and CU traits. Contrary to predictions, however, this group also showed the strongest affiliation with deviant peers. The only variable strongly associated with the adolescent onset group was lower scores on a measure of traditionalism which indicates less endorsement of traditional values and status hierarchies. The implications of these results for understanding different causal trajectories to antisocial behavior and for designing better prevention and treatment programs for antisocial youth are discussed.

Abstract:
The current study tested the association of both positive and negative aspects of parenting with callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct problems. Caregivers of 92 kindergarteners were recruited to complete a series of survey measures. Overall, parent-report of negative parenting practices was not associated with teacher report of conduct problems. However, parent report of positive parenting practices (i.e., warmth, positive reinforcement, positive communication and cooperation) was negatively associated with conduct problems and CU traits. Interactions between positive parenting variables and CU traits in their association with conduct problems indicated that positive reinforcement related more strongly to lower levels of conduct problem behavior for youth with high levels of CU traits. However, positive communication and cooperation related more strongly to conduct problems for youth with lower levels of CU traits. These associations suggest that parenting may play a role in the development of CU traits and conduct problems.

Abstract:
Growing numbers of preschool children are being referred to mental health services with symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADIID), and medication is increasingly being used to treat them (Zito, Safer, dosReis et al., 2000). However, there is limited evidence for the short- and long- term efficacy of medication (Greenhill, Kollins. Abikoff et al., 2006), concerns over adverse effects (Wigal, Greenhill, Chuang, et al., 2006) as well as ethical objections to medical intervention at such an early stage in development (Perring, 1997). Consequently, there is a need to provide effective psychosocial interventions for this population (Conners, March, Frances, Wells, & Ross, 2001). A literature review of preschool ADHD (Chapter 2) identified three parent-training (PT) programmes that have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing ADHD symptoms, and concluded that PT may provide an effective first-line intervention for preschoolers with ADHD symptoms. The three empirical studies (Chapters 3,4, and 5) evaluated the efficacy of one of these programmes - the Incredible Years (I Y) BASIC PT programme - within a community sample of preschool children with signs of early emerging conduct problems and ADHD. Study one (Chapter 3) examined the short-term efficacy of the lY intervention, using a randomised controlled group design. Following the delivery of the programme, the intervention group was associated with significantly lower levels of parent-reported ADHD symptoms, compared to a wait-list control group. The second empirical study (Chapter 4) examined the longitudinal stability of intervention-Mated gains. Results demonstrated that improvements were maintained at 12- and 18- month follow-ups. Early Intervention for Preschool ADI ID and Conduct Problems xv The third study (Chapter 5) explored potential predictors, moderators, and mediators of outcome within this sample. Moderator analyses failed to uncover significant associations between risk factors and outcome, suggesting that the intervention was effective even for the most disadvantaged families. Predictor analysis suggested that those with the most severe levels of ADHD at baseline were most likely to benefit from intervention. Maternal depression was associated with poorer long-term outcome at 18-month follow-up, although it was not associated with initial treatment response. Mediator analyses indicated that enhanced positive parenting skill was a significant partial mediator of outcome, suggesting that positive parenting is one of the key mechanisms contributing to intervention success. The short-term efficacy, longitudinal stability, and lack of outcome moderators suggest that the lY is a valuable and stable intervention when delivered as a preventive intervention for preschool children presenting with ADHD symptoms, even for families traditionally considered to be 'hard to treat'.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation study was to investigate the direct and interactive relationships between depression and conduct problems and substance abuse treatment outcomes in a national sample of adolescents participating in substance abuse treatment. This study involved a secondary analysis of data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse's- Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Study for Adolescence (DATOS-A), a multi-site, longitudinal study of substance abusing adolescents seeking treatment. Participants completed a battery of self-report and interview measures at treatment intake including the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children Revised (DISC-R), which assessed depression and conduct problems. Adolescents also completed structured interviews relating to substance use at intake and 12 months after treatment. Results from the multiple regression analyses supported hypotheses relating to greater conduct problems predicting greater post-treatment substance use. Results from the multiple regression analyses failed to support study hypotheses relating to depression and the interaction of conduct problems and depression predicting post-treatment substance use. Significant control variables included age, length of treatment, and intake level of substance use. Results are discussed within the context of the relevant literature.

Abstract:
Childhood conduct problems (CP) are associated with significant impairment and disruption for the individual and their environment, and account for the greatest cost to psychological services of all childhood psychopathologies. It is now well established that the most chronic and severe patterns of antisocial behaviour are initiated early in life. Harsh and coercive discipline has been identified as one of the strongest risk factors for the development of early CP. Across a range of psychopathologies, parental causal attributions have been found to contribute to these negative parenting practices. In spite of growing evidence regarding the importance of parental attributions, no research has examined attributions in relation to CU traits. High callous-unemotional (CU) traits represent a risk pathway for particularly severe CP among children with early-onset antisocial behaviours. A meta-analysis of studies examining CU traits in children prior to five years of age demonstrated a significant positive relationship between CU traits and conduct problem severity, in the order of a large effect size. Research is needed to understand the contributions of parenting risk processes to early childhood conduct problems and CU traits. The aim of the current study was to examine parental attributions concerning conduct problems and CU traits among parents of children referred for conduct problems in early childhood. Eighty parents and their children participated in the research project. Participation required the completion of a number of questionnaires measuring parental attributions, negative parenting, parent depression, child temperament and child behaviour. Observational data of interactions between the parent and child were also coded to assess the emotional quality of the parent child relationship. Hypotheses concerning associations between parental attributions, parental responses and conduct problems were partially supported. CP severity was associated with internal attributions, negative affective responses and overreactive discipline. While internal and controllable attributions were associated with parent negative affect, no significant interactions were found between parental attributions and parental responses in the prediction of CP. Hypotheses concerning associations between parental attributions, parental responses and CU traits were not supported. CU traits were not associated with any parenting variable. It was found however, that parent generated negative attributions were associated with harsher parenting towards CU traits. The finding that parent generated negative attributions were higher for CP than CU traits was consistent with the suggestion that a child’s age may be a protective factor against negative attributions towards CU traits. The results of the current study suggest that while parental attributions may not play an important role in the development of early childhood CP and CU traits, they may influence how parents respond to particular child behaviours. Hence, exploring parents’ causal reasoning for child behaviour may provide important insights into dysfunctional parenting processes. The thesis highlights that the presence of CU traits is a marker for particularly severe conduct problems beginning in early childhood, and that greater understanding is needed of the parent child dynamics that shape early developmental trajectories associated with CU traits.

Abstract:
Legal basis for the development of pipeline transport is the main criterion for its beneficial practical use in the future. At the moment, we have a clear vision of the technological potential of pipeline transport. However, the issue of legal regulation of pipeline transport is still up in the air. Public international law makes it possible to establish, on a contractual basis, the fundamental principles and standards of conduct for participants of international communication. At the same time, it is also experiencing a certain crisis due to difficulties and factors of globalization. It is necessary to increase the development of partnership between Russia and other countries to improve the situation. Pipelines are currently one of the most widespread and safest ways of transporting materials. Russian and foreign specialists consider the issues of international law regulation in the field of the main ways of transportation. However, the issues of international legal regulation of pipeline transport and its specific and general legal regulation are still relevant and open to exploration.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to solving the problems of the production of thin-walled cases, where it is important to improve the accuracy of manufacturing. Based on the foregoing, it was decided to conduct research work. The technology of processing a long body from a hot-rolled thick-walled pipe using drawing is considered, which guarantees the required shape accuracy and the least effect of the properties of the initial state of the workpiece in comparison with the technology of manufacturing bodies by stamping from sheet metal. As a result of the work, it was determined that the difference in the diameter of the housing bore when basing on the pulling operation is mirrored onto the accuracy of the inner surface of the housing, and the maximum beating of the housing stem obeys the Rayleigh distribution law and fits into the tolerance with a two-fold margin. Experimental studies have shown that an increase in the accuracy of manufacturing extended bodies can be guaranteed by reducing the technological tolerance for the inner base hole of the workpiece for pulling

Abstract:
This study examines the collaborative processes the Chicago Alliance for Equity in Computer Science (CAFÉCS) uses to conduct and use research. The CAFÉCS RPP is a partnership between Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Loyola University Chicago, The Learning Partnership, DePaul University, and University of Illinois at Chicago. Data used in this analysis comes from three years of evaluation data, and includes an analysis of team documents, meeting observations, and interviews with 25 members of the CAFÉCS RPP team. The analysis examines how three problems are being investigated by the partnership: 1) student failure rate in an introductory computer science course, 2) teachers’ limited use of discussion techniques in an introductory computer science class, and 3) computer science teacher retention. Results from the analysis indicate that the RPP engages in a formalized problem-solving cycle. The problem-solving cycle includes the following steps: First, the Office of Computer Science (OCS) identifies a problem. Next, the CAFÉCS team brainstorms and prioritizes hypotheses to test. Next, data analysis clarifies the problem and the research findings are shared and interpreted by the entire team. Finally, the findings are used to inform OCS improvement strategies and next steps for the CAFÉCS research agenda. There are slight variations in the problem-solving cycle, depending on the stage of understanding of the problem, which has implications for the mode of research (e.g hypothesis testing, research and design, continuous improvement, or evaluation).

Foreit, James R. FRONTIERS capacity building: An overview. Population Council, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2002.1005.

Full text
Abstract:
The Population Council’s Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program is a cooperative agreement with USAID to improve family planning and reproductive health service delivery through operations research (OR). Frontiers builds on more than 20 years of research to improve family planning service delivery programs. A major goal of Frontiers is to transfer skills in OR so that public and private agencies in developing countries can conduct OR and apply research findings to reproductive health programs and policies. OR addresses problems in operational effectiveness, access, quality, and efficiency by investigating facets of programs that managers can control and change. As concluded in this overview report, Frontiers seeks to institutionalize capacity building by increasing the number of service delivery organizations that use OR and increasing the number of research organizations capable of conducting and teaching OR. Investment in capacity building will ensure that OR will make a continuing, significant contribution to reproductive health and family planning programs and policies.

Zacamy, Jenna, and Jeremy Roschelle. Navigating the Tensions: How Could Equity-relevant Research Also Be Agile, Open, and Scalable? Digital Promise, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.51388/20.500.12265/159.

Abstract:
Digital learning platforms are beginning to become open to research. Specifically, in our work in SEERNet, developers are extending five platforms, each used in either K-12 or higher education by more than 100,000 users, to enable third-party researchers to explore, develop, and test improvements. SEERNet seeks to enable equity-relevant research aligned with the IES Standards for Excellence in Education Research (SEER) principles. It also seeks to support research that is more agile (or rapid), is more open, and scales from research to impacts on practice. We review the emerging tensions among the goal of equity-relevant research and desires for agile, open, and scalable research. We argue that designing and developing technical capabilities for agile, open, and scalable research will not be enough. Based on a series of interviews we conducted with experts in social sciences and equity-focused research, we argue that researchers will have to rethink how they plan and undertake their research. Five shifts could help. First, researchers could deliberately reframe their designs away from a comprehensive, monolithic study to smaller, agile cycles that test a smaller conjecture each time. Second, researchers could shift from designing new educational resources to determining how well-used resources could be elaborated and refined to address equity issues. Third, researchers could utilize variables that capture student experiences to investigate equity when they cannot obtain student demographic variables. Fourth, researchers could work in partnership with educators on equity problems that educators prioritize and want help in solving. Fifth, researchers could acknowledge that achieving equity is not only a technological or resource-design problem, but requires working at the classroom and systems levels too. In SEERNet, we look forward to working with the research community to find ways to address equity through research using well-used digital learning platforms, and to simultaneously conduct research that is more agile, more open, and more directly applicable at scale.

Ayoul-Guilmard, Q., S. Ganesh, M. Nuñez, R. Tosi, F. Nobile, R. Rossi, and C. Soriano. D5.4 Report on MLMC for time dependent problems. Scipedia, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23967/exaqute.2021.2.005.

Full text
Abstract:
In this report, we study the use of Multi-Level Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods for time dependent problems. It was found that the usability of MLMC methods depends strongly on whether or not the underlying time dependent problem is chaotic in nature. Numerical experiments are conducted on both simple problems, as well as fluid flow problems of practical interest to the ExaQUte project, to demonstrate this. For the non-chaotic cases, the hypotheses that enable the use of MLMC methods were found to be satisfied. For the chaotic cases, especially the case of high Reynolds’ number fluid flow, the hypotheses were not satisfied. However, it was found that correlations between the different levels were high enough to merit the use of multi-fidelity or control-variate approaches. It was also noted that MLMC methods could work for chaotic problems if the time window of analysis were chosen to be small enough. Future studies are proposed to examine this possibility.

Aryal, Jeetendra P. Contribution of Agriculture to Climate Change and Low-Emission Agricultural Development in Asia and the Pacific. Asian Development Bank Institute, October 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.56506/wdbc4659.

Full text
Abstract:
The agriculture sector in the Asia and Pacific region contributes massively to climate change, as the region has the largest share of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture. The region is the largest producer of rice, a major source of methane emissions. Further, to achieve food security for the increasing population, there has been a massive increase in the use of synthetic fertilizer and energy in agricultural production in the region over the last few decades. This has led to an enormous rise in nitrous oxide (N2O) (mostly from fertilizer-N use) and carbon dioxide (mostly from energy use for irrigation) emissions from agriculture. Besides this, a substantial increase in livestock production for meat and dairy products has increased methane emissions, along with other environmental problems. In this context, we conduct a systematic review of strategies that can reduce emissions from the agriculture sector using a multidimensional approach, looking at supply-side, demand-side, and cross-cutting measures. The review found that though there is a huge potential to reduce GHG emissions from agriculture, significant challenges exist in monitoring and verification of GHG emissions from supply-side measures, shifting to sustainable consumption behavior with regard to food consumption and use, and the design and implementation of regulatory and incentive mechanisms. On the supply side, policies should focus on the upscaling of climate-smart agriculture primarily through expanding knowledge and improving input use efficiency in agriculture, while on the demand side, there is a need to launch a drive to reduce food loss and waste and also to move toward sustainable consumption. Therefore, appropriate integration of policies at multiple levels, as well as application of multiple measures simultaneously, can increase mitigation potential as desired by the Paris Agreement and also help to achieve several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Patron, Maria Carmela, and Marilou P. Costello. The DMPA service provider: Profile, problems and prospects, August 1995. Population Council, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1995.1024.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents the results of interviews conducted with 60 trained DMPA service providers from seven of the ten local government units (LGUs) covered by Phase I of the Philippine Department of Health's DMPA Reintroduction Program. DMPA, or Depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate, is an injectable contraceptive commonly known as Depo-Provera. The interviews were undertaken as part of the DMPA Monitoring and Follow-up Studies sponsored by the Population Council under the Asia and Near East Operations Research and Technical Assistance (ANE OR/TA) Project. While the monitoring study and the follow-up survey focused on DMPA users and dropouts, this study centered on the service provider. The DMPA Reintroduction Program was launched by the DOH in April 1994 by the Philippine Bureau of Food and Drugs. The program aims to reintroduce DMPA into the Philippine Family Planning Program through training local-level doctors, nurses, and midwives as service providers, and providing free DMPA services in selected public health facilities.

Zilberman, David, Amir Heiman, and Yanhong Jin. Use of Branding and Sampling in Agricultural Fresh Produce. United States Department of Agriculture, July 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2013.7697116.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The original proposal has three main objectives: a conceptual framework on willingness to pay (WTP) for fruits and vegetables, the introduction of branding and sampling in fresh food, and empirical applications to the United States and Israel. We modified our research plan over time based on availability of data and emergence of new problems. We expanded the range of products to include poultry and the range of techniques to use real experiments as well as more traditional surveys. We expanded the range of problems to understand attitudes toward genetically modified (GM) food. There is a growing interest in introduction of marketing tools like demonstration sampling, money-back guarantees, labeling, and brands in agriculture. These marketing tools are important for enhancing demand for agricultural products and food safety. However, the methodology needed to assess the effectiveness of these tools and understand their performance in different agricultural sectors is limited. Our analysis demonstrated the importance of brands as a marketing tool in agriculture. In particular, we showed conceptually that strong brands can be substitutes for other marketing tools like sampling or demonstration. We were able to conduct real experiments for the demand for safe chicken and show that consumers are willing to pay significantly more for products branded as more safe. Yet, using experiments in Israel and the United States, we found that WTP for brands of fresh fruits and vegetables is smaller than in other product categories. Warning labels are a sort of negative branding. The GM-free labeling is particularly important since it serves as a trade barrier to U.S. crops exports. Our analysis of acceptance of GM products found that WTP for GM products in Israel and the United States depends on framing of information about the impact ofGM and the quantity of information disclosed. Finally, in analyzing the evolution of support for Proposition 37 that aimed to introduce mandatory labeling of GM in California, we found that support for mandatory labeling ofGM products is broad as long as it is not perceived to be costly. Our project demonstrates the feasibility of conducting real experiments to assess consumer demand in agriculture. When looking at interdisciplinary groups, one can design new products and assess the WTP for their characteristics. We also show that, while branding is a very strong marketing tool, its use in fresh fruit and vegetables is likely to be limited. However, brands can be important with processed food. Furthermore, we have proven that, while some consumers strongly object to GM products, most consumers in the United States and Israel would be willing to buy them for a discount, and some would pay extra if they are associated with improved characteristics. Finally, we expanded the notion of warning labels to calorie information and showed that the response to calorie information depends on gender, education, and how the information is presented.
